Make a Splash on San Diego's Only Amphibious Tour

Make a Splash on the SEAL! Experience San Diego as it was meant to be experienced...by land and by sea! The new "Hydra Terras" provide you with the unique ability to see America's Finest City on San Diego's only amphibious sightseeing tour. This 90-minute fully-narrated journey departs from Seaport Village located at 500 Kettner Blvd. As you travel along the beautiful Big Bay by land, you will learn about the early fishing industry, the people as well as the history of this 14-mile long working bay. The tour on land takes you past the San Diego International Airport dedicated to aviator Charles Lindbergh, just one of the many people you will hear about on your tour. Then, you will splash down into San Diego Bay off Shelter Island, where you begin your water-tour segment of the journey. As the SEAL travels through the north end of the Big Bay, keep your eyes peeled for a chance encounter with a California Brown Pelican, the majestic Blue Heron, or perhaps a Sea Lion or two. Learn about the important role the military plays in San Diego. The Big Bay provides views of Point Loma, home to the Cabrillo National Monument, Naval Air Station North Island, the Point Loma Submarine Base, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Navy's marine mammal training center. The return trip takes you, once again, back up on land where you will return to your starting point via Harbor Drive while you pass the Maritime Museum, the Cruise Ship Terminal and the USS Midway Museum.

San Diego Sightseeing At Its Best

Old Town Trolley Tours, our land tour, had already been operating in San Diego since 1989, when the idea of providing our guests an amphibious San Diego Sightseeing tour came from our CEO, Chris Belland.

Chris went about to find a Hydra Terra vehicle that would serve as our sea & land vehicle to be used during the tour. Our director of operations worked out the entire business plan while at lunch at a local restaurant.

The name SEAL is a tribute to the Navy SEALS who train and are stationed here in San Diego. And, like in the Navy, the term SEAL, for us, is an acronym: SE a A nd L and.

Plus, seals are cute!

It’s interesting to note, however, that we view sea lions on our SEAL tour. Many people might also refer to this type of tour as San Diego Duck Tours because in many cities across the country that is what they are called. The format is very similar to Duck Tours, however we like to put our own unique spin on it. Learn and hear more about us when you take your own Sea and Land Adventure tour, the SEAL.

Navy SEALs to Transform Imperial Beach with $1 Billion Campus Expansion

T he Navy SEALs, an elite force that has quietly made San Diego County its home for the past half-century, is set to embark on one of the most significant expansions in its history—a new $1 billion campus on the Silver Strand. This sprawling 60-acre complex will introduce 1.5 million square feet of state-of-the-art facilities, marking a shift in the SEALs’ operations from Coronado to the threshold of Imperial Beach.

Rear Adm. Brian Losey, commander of all SEALs, recently disclosed the personal toll of the demanding SEAL lifestyle, sharing that his own children opted for the Coast Guard due to his extensive absences. This revelation adds a human dimension to the SEALs’ narrative, one often dominated by tales of valor and secrecy.

The SEALs’ growth spurt, dating back to 2005, has left its World War II-era infrastructure in dire need of an upgrade. Planned facilities include logistical support, maintenance-training spaces, classrooms, offices, and even a 120-foot parachute drying assembly that would stand out like a clock tower.

Though the new complex will not house training ranges—SEALs will continue to travel for that purpose—the headquarters and the legendary Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training center will stay put, just south of the iconic Hotel del Coronado.

The growth of special ops is a response to the shifting landscape of warfare. Traditional large-scale troop combat is giving way to operations that are less costly and more suited to countering decentralized terrorist networks. Special operations, alongside cyber warfare and unmanned drones, are emerging at the forefront of U.S. defense capabilities.

The SEAL expansion project, however, does not come without its complications. Residents of Coronado and Imperial Beach are torn between their patriotic support for the SEALs and concerns over increased traffic and the alteration of their natural surroundings. Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka, himself the son of a Navy SEAL, has expressed concerns about the potential increase in traffic and infrastructure pressures.

For Imperial Beach, the development might signal a commercial boon, as up to 8,800 additional daily car trips through the city could bring new business to local merchants. Mayor Serge Dedina has indicated that there is a strong backing from residents, and the prospect of the new SEAL campus has already sparked interest from hotel chains like Best Western.
