The final round of the 2024 PGA Championship should produce plenty of drama and a potential playoff. Six players are within 2-shots of the lead, which is tied between 30-year-old Xander Schauffele (-15) and 27-year-old Collin Morikawa (-15) . The odds to win the 109th PGA Championship are provided along with final round matchups.

Shane Lowry shot a major championship record-tying 62 Saturday to move up the leaderboard. The 38-year-old gained 6.4 strokes putting in Saturday's round, a career high. His 11.26 strokes gained putting this week are the most through 3 rounds by anyone in a PGA Tour event in 2024. Lowry is just 2-shots off the lead along with 30-year-old LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who chipped in for eagle from the fringe on the Par 5 closing hole Saturday. Justin Rose shot 64 Saturday playing alongside Lowry, and the 43-year-old Rose is 3-shots behind the co-leaders.

Schauffele is chasing his first major championship after so many close calls. Morikawa, Lowry, DeChambeau and Rose are all major champions with Morikawa winning the 2020 PGA Championship . A win by DeChambeau Sunday would make him the third player to win the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open and PGA Championship, joining Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Sahith Theegala is just 1-shot off the lead chasing his first major title, along with 2023 FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland, who is 2-shots back.

Schauffele shot a 62 in Round 1 to tie Lowery and three other golfers with the lowest score in major championship history. Schauffele has done it twice having shot a U.S. Open record 62 in Round 1 of last year’s major.

Player Comments

Golfer’s post Round 3 press conferences and some comments.

Schauffele : When asked about having and protecting lead and bunched leaderboard. “No, you want the lead. Against these guys, you want as many shots as you can possibly take, no matter how nerve-racking it can be.”

Morikawa : “Obviously the course was playing pretty low today. A lot of guys took it low to climb their way up. I assume tomorrow is going to be the same.” Morikawa added, “I'm going to tap in just kind of that mental state I've been in, not only those two (major wins), but in other tournaments I've played well in.”

Lowry : Round 3 and a record 62 was the best putting round of Lowry’s career. He mentioned he changed putters a few tournaments ago at the Zurich Classic. Playing Saturday with Justin Rose, “We both played great, and it was nice to feed off each other the whole day. It was pretty cool for both of us.”

PGA Championship Playoffs

In PGA Championship history, there have been 19 playoffs and most recently in 2022 when Justin Thomas beat Will Zalatoris in a 3-hole aggregate playoff after huge longshot Mito Pereira made a double-bogey at No. 18 and the 72nd hole Sunday to miss the playoff by 1-shot. Thomas shot a 3-under par 67 on Sunday to tie for low round of the day, while Zalatoris shot 71 and Pereira 75.

Heading into Round 3 , Schauffele was -12 under par and tied the lowest 36-hole score to par in PGA Championship history. Now he’s playing in another final group Sunday chasing his first major title. Tour Championship Leaderboard And Final Round Live Updates - Hovland Wins FedEx Cup by Five Shots Over Schauffele

The 2022/23 PGA Tour season comes to a conclusion this evening at East Lake. Who will lift the FedEx Cup and take the $18m bonus?

Ben Fleming

Viktor Hovland fought off a spirited fightback from Xander Schauffele to claim back-to-back victories and the FedEx Cup with a five-shot victory at the Tour Championship.

Starting the day six shots ahead, Hovland started fast, making four birdies in his first six holes either side of a rain delay but was unable to shake off the challenge of Schauffele.

The American, who has never finished below seventh in his six appearances so far at East Lake, also made four birdies in his first six holes and continued to battle away, at one point reducing Hovland's lead down to just three after three birdies in five holes around the turn.

As the rest of the field was left behind, the final pairing offered up something of a prelude for next month's Ryder Cup over the back nine, going blow for blow over the final holes.

The turning point would arrive on the 14th, where Hovland responded from a poor chip to drain a crucial par putt and retain his three-shot advantage. From there, the 25-year-old found three birdies in his final three holes to finish on -27, securing back-to-back wins alongside the $18m winner cheque.

After Schauffele on -22, Wyndham Clark was the next best back at -16. Solid final rounds from Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay saw the pair round out the top five at -14 and -13 respectively. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler finished at T6 on -11.

Headshot of writer Ben Fleming

Hello and welcome to Golf Monthly's live coverage of the final round of the Tour Championship. After a stellar round on Saturday, the tournament is really Viktor Hovland's to lose. Fresh of his victory last week, the Norwegian has a six-shot advantage at East Lake heading into the final round.

It will take something special from the chasing pack to stop him. Will that happen? Tune in to find out...

FINAL ROUND TEE TIMES

We've got a few early starters out on the course, but here's a look at when the big contenders get underway for their final round.

Times listed in EDT (BST):

  • 12.56pm (5.56pm) -  Adam Schenk, Rory McIlroy
  • 1.07pm (6.07pm) -  Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay
  • 1.18pm (6.18pm) -  Wyndham Clark, Jon Rahm
  • 1.29pm (6.29pm) -  Keegan Bradley, Collin Morikawa
  • 1.40pm (6.40pm) -  Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele

DIFFICULT EARLY SCORING

Scoring was tricky yesterday and the early signs from those already on the course is that we could be in for similarly tricky scorings.

14 players are out on the course but just two are under par currently for their rounds...

IS XANDER THE MAN TO CHASE DOWN HOVLAND?

If you could have picked someone charged with catching Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele may just be that person.

The American has five top-ten finishes and one victory at this course in his six appearances at the tournament. As well as that, he's yet to shoot over par at East Lake.

Could he cause a shock here today? A reminder that Scottie Scheffler led by this exact amount heading into the final round last year...and ended up falling short to an electric round from Rory McIlroy.

BIG PAYDAY FOR THE WINNER

It's the biggest purse on the PGA Tour, so here's a quick reminder of the eye-watering sums of money that the top-ten players are set to take home today:

  • 1 - $18,000,000
  • 2 - $6,500,000
  • 3 - $5,000,000
  • 4 - $4,000,000
  • 5 - $3,000,000
  • 6 - $2,500,000
  • 7 - $2,000,000
  • 8 - $1,500,000
  • 9 - $1,250,000
  • 10 - $1,000,000

RYDER CUP PICKS TO PLAY FOR

Another strand to today's action is next month's Ryder Cup. Two names in the top five, in particular, will be looking to force the hand of US Captain Zach Johnson ahead of Marco Simone.

Collin Morikawa looks likely to get a captain's pick already but he'll be after one more big round just to make that sure.

The other is Keegan Bradley who it feels like is on the outside looking in at the minute. He's already won twice this season but may well need a big final-round showing at East Lake to make the case to Johnson for one of those six picks.

RORY MCILROY UNDERWAY

He's been struggling with a back injury all week has Rory and currently sits 11 shots back of the lead. He pulled off something magnificent this time last year but 11 shots feels even beyond his best.

He gets underway with Adam Schenk, finding the right rough with his first tee shot.

EARLY BOGEY FOR RORY

The Northern Irishman is blocked off by trees after his opening drive and can't reach the green in two. From the fairway he can't get up and down to save his par and he drops back to -8.

It's a lovely birdie, though, for his playing partner Schenk who moves into solo eighth at -10. What a season he is putting together.

GLOVER AND HOMA INTO THE TOP TEN

A nice start for the American duo early into their final rounds. Two birdies for Glover, one for Max and the pair are both at T9 on -9.

OPENING BIRDIE FOR SCHEFFLER

Where was any of that yesterday, Scottie? The World No.1 was birdie-shy almost the entirety of Saturday but gets underway at the first on Sunday with a lovely iron approach.

He's got ten feet for birdie and this time makes no mistake. Up to -12 but plenty of work still to do.

SCHENK HOLES OUT FROM THE FAIRWAY

Wow! What a start from Adam Schenk. It's rare that Rory McIlroy is overshadowed in a pairing but it's happening right now.

A birdie on the first is met by eagle on the third as he holes out from 137 yards on the fairway. Up to -12 and into a share of fifth for him.

He's still yet to win on the PGA Tour and that's probably unlikely to change today, but his breakthrough season continues to go from strength to strength.

6 years ago today, Adam received his PGA Tour card. Today, he is playing in the final round of the Tour Championship. I have a slew of words to share but I’ll spare you all: I’m wearing waterproof mascara today. pic.twitter.com/QuMdBmcJN7 August 27, 2023

LEADER UNDERWAY

A bit of drama before he starts as Viktor Hovland and his caddie appear to take a wrong turn and have to lightly jog to make the first tee on time.

All's well that ends well, though, as he finds the fairway with his drive. Schauffele, too, finds the short stuff as he looks to chase down the Norwegian.

EARLY BIRDIES FLOWING

Well, I thought it might be similar to yesterday conditions-wise but perhaps not. Scheffler rolls in another birdie - his second of the round - to get to -13 and he's joined there by Adam Schenk whose marvellous front nine gets even better with a 31-foot birdie to move four under thru four.

Morikawa gets off and running with birdie at the first to move to -14 but Keegan Bradley doesn't appear to have got the memo as he makes an opening-hole bogey to drop back to -12.

HOVLAND MAKES AN EARLY MOVE

Just relentless golf from Viktor Hovland who pours in a 15-footer on the first for a birdie to move to -21. He's going to be difficult to catch if he keeps making birdies look as easy as that.

But credit to Schauffele. A beauty of an iron into the green for the American who also makes birdie to keep some sort of pressure on the leader. Up to -15 for him.

PLAY SUSPENDED

Well, not the news we were hoping for. Just as we were getting started, play has been suspended due to "inclement weather." Looks like storms are projected in the area but hopefully East Lake can avoid the worst of it.

The final round of the TOUR Championship was suspended at 1:57 p.m. ET due to inclement weather. August 27, 2023

Some thunder being picked up by the TV cameras. It looks like this delay could be a bit lengthier than anyone initially anticipated.

Anyway, lets take the opportunity to look back on what golf we have seen so far today and the story right now is Adam Schenk. Five holes, three birdies, one eagle. Not bad.

Here's a look at that eagle - a hole-out from the fairway:

A post shared by PGA TOUR (@pgatour) A photo posted by on

RAIN BEGINNING TO CLEAR

No news as of yet regards a restart but signs the rain and clouds appear to be slowing moving away from East Lake.

There's not a lot of wind out on the course so it may take it's time but hopefully we aren't too far away from getting the golfers back on the course.

OVER IN EUROPE...

A few signs of fans but still no signs of players so lets take another look back at some other action from today which happened in Europe at the Czech Masters on the DP World Tour.

If today is a big day for the likes of Bradley and Morikawa to force their way into a US captain's pick for the Ryder Cup, then it was no different over in Prague.

A host of big names such as Ludvig Aberg, Nicolai Hojgaard, Adrian Meronk, Yannik Paul and Bob MacIntyre were in contention as they looked to make their case to Luke Donald for a captain's pick onto Team Europe.

Click here to find out how they got on.

PLAY TO RESUME AT 15:50 ET (20:50 BST)

Finally some good news and a time for the resumption of play. Given the length of the delay, the players are being allowed some time on the range first but it looks like we are looking at a 3:50pm ET restart.

For the folks in the UK, that's 20:50pm so just over half an hour away.

Update from Atlanta: the range is opening at 3:15 and play expected to resume at 3:50 pm ET. August 27, 2023

PLAY TO RESUME - HOVLAND LEADS BY SIX

We're about 15 minutes away from play resuming so a small reminder of how things stand:

Hovland remains six shots ahead on -21 after a first-hole birdie but faces a putt to save his par on the second. His closest chaser, Schauffele, also made birdie on the first and has a look at birdie on 2 to move up to -15.

Further back on -14 is Morikawa, while Schenk and Scheffler have each started excellently with the pair sat on -13 and -4 and -2 for their final rounds respectively so far.

PLAY BACK UNDERWAY

The horn goes and we're back just under two hours later!

A big putt first up for Hovland to save his par on the second...right in the heart of it. No signs of rust from the Norwegian after the time waiting around. Schauffele pushes his birdie putt right off the hole and walks of for a par.

There was a chance of a two-shot swing there but, in the end, it all remains the same. Hovland leads by six.

CLOSE SHAVE FOR SCHEFFLER

Scottie was getting hot before the weather interval and his iron's are dialled right out the gates with a nice approach into the fifth. From ten feet, though, he can't convert and he remains eight back at -13.

SCHAUFFELE CUTS LEAD TO FIVE

He just loves this course, does Xander. Another sterling iron into the third green gives him a look at birdie and the American makes no mistake.

He's up to -16 and now just five back of Hovland after he misses his look at birdie. No cause for concern...yet.

SCHENK INTO THE TOP THREE

Not even the near two-hour rain delay has dampened Adam Schenk's spirits today as his magical front nine just keeps getting better. Another birdie pours into the hole at 6 and he's now -5 for his round, 14-under-par for the tournament and into a tie for third!

BIRDIES FOR HOVLAND AND SCHAUFFELE

The rain from earlier may have made these greens slightly more receptive, and the final pair are putting that two the test. Schauffele's approach into the fourth is great. Hovland's is even better, almost threatening to slam dunk into the hole.

It's two relatively short birdie efforts...and they both convert. We started the day with a few in contention but this is fast becoming a two horse race - Schauffele hunting down Hovland.

Elsewhere, there is a bogey for Morikawa who drops back to -13 and leaves Schenk in solo third. That's a tasty payday if he can stay there.

KEEGAN BRADLEY DROPS BACK

Not the round the American would have wanted to put together today. His second bogey of the day on the front nine and he's now two-over-par for his round and back at -11.

Keegan Bradley looks on from the third green

MORE PUTTING WOES FOR SCHEFFLER

A couple of missed opportunities early in the round for the American and he's now in trouble on the seventh with his ball running through to the back of the green. It's a tricky two-putt but that becomes all the more difficult when the World No.1's first effort comes up way short before drifting down the slope and away from the hole.

In the end, it's a three-putt bogey and he's now ten back of Hovland at -12.

HOVLAND RESTORES SIX SHOT LEAD

It's difficult to put into words the level of ball striking Hovland is displaying right now. The greens are receptive, sure, but, he's got another great look at birdie after a sumptuous iron into the fifth.

No problem for the Norwegian, who rolls it in for back-to-back birdies to get to -23.

And the pressure tells on Schauffele who misses his birdie putt just prior. He's been great so far today as well but he's back to how he started the day - six back of the leader.

PLENTY FALLING BY THE WAYSIDE

This truly has become a two-horse race now. A bogey for Rahm after finding the greenside bunker. A bogey for Morikawa after a short miss. And a bogey, too, for Schenk after a clumsy three putts.

Schauffele the only one standing, trying to chase down Hovland.

DOUBLE BOGEY FOR SCHEFFLER

Well Scottie wasn't likely to win today but he's now just losing money quickly on these greens.

The first putt on the eighth is tricky - slow at first before picking up speed - and Scheffler races it by. The par putt is missed...and so is the even shorter bogey putt. Double-bogey six and the World No. 10 is back to -10 where he started the tournament.

MORE BIRDIES FOR HOVLAND AND SCHAUFFELE

The two players in the final group find the exact same greenside bunker left of the green with their approaches in.

The rain we've had earlier in the day makes this a far less intimidating proposition for these two on the par-five sixth and they make no mistake, up and down for a pair of birdies and on they go, storming further ahead of the field.

BOGEYS FOR SCHENK AND RAHM

Schauffele and Hovland look like they are playing a different course at the minute as more players drop shots around them. Rahm gets himself in trouble off the tee and can only hack out of the fairway bunker. In the end, he does well to just drop one shot.

Schenk, too, drops one as he makes the turn after another three putt on the tenth.

SCHAUFFELE BACK WITHIN FIVE

Everyone else has vacated from the chase but Xander Schauffele is going nowhere. An aggressive tee shot allows him a wedge into the green and he makes no mistake with the birdie putt. He's -5 thru eight holes and up to -19.

Hovland taps in for his part to remain at -24, but his lead now drops back to five.

MORIKAWA MAKES THE TURN WITH BIRDIE

He's no longer fighting for the overall title, but there's plenty of money on offer for any of the players that can make a move up the leaderboard. After a quiet few holes, Morikawa bounces back with birdie on the par-three ninth to move alongside Clark on -13.

And he's joined back on 13-under-par by Adam Schenk who pours in another birdie from over 20 feet. He's back into a tie for third.

HOVLAND SAVES PAR AS FINAL PAIR MAKE THE TURN

Plenty of work to do for Hovland as his tee shot into the ninth comes up right at the bottom of a huge slope. It's 50ft long but with about 40ft worth of left-to-right break.

The Norwegian gives it a good go but his effort comes up just short. It's a slightly testy downhiller for par...but he makes no mistake. Schauffele gives his putt a great roll but it just evades the hole. A great effort but the lead remains at five for Hovland.

CLARK MAKING A MOVE

He wasn't particularly in contention at the start of the day but a three-under-par round has this year's US Open champion up into solo third at -14.

That could be worth a few dollars if he can stay there come the end of play.

DOUBLE BOGEY FOR SCHENK

Oooh, that's not ideal. Adam Schenk goes from bunker to bunker on the 14th before a costly three-putt leaves him with a double-bogey six! From a tie for fourth down into seventh at -11 for the American.

SCHAUFFELE CUTS LEAD TO FOUR

Xander is running out of holes but by no means giving up the chase. He hits a solid iron into the 11th but is under pressure as Hovland stuffs one in close.

No nerves from the American, though, as he gets the perfect roll on his right-to-left putt, sending it right into the heart of the cup for his eighth birdie of the day. He's up to -20 now.

Hovland with a chance to maintain his five-shot lead...but he can't. Perhaps the first signs of nerves from the Norwegian? Seven holes to go but his lead is now four.

RORY MAKING A MOVE

Even a bad back can't deter the Northern Irishman. He loves it here at East Lake and is finishing in style here on Sunday. A divine tee shot into the 15th brings him his third birdie in four holes and up to T4 at -13.

Schenk, his playing partner, bounces back nicely after that double bogey with a birdie, too, while Clark further improves his position in third with another birdie to get to -15.

BACK-TO-BACK BIRDIES FOR SCHAUFFELE, LEAD NOW JUST THREE

Hovland is in a small spot of bother off the 12th tee as his ball settles into the fairway bunker. Not to worry, he simply sticks it in close and gives himself another look at birdie.

Schauffele ramps up the pressure with another stellar iron into the green just inside Hovland's effort. And the pressure tells.

Hovland's effort goes by while Schauffele's putt drops for another birdie. In an instant, the hole is now three.

Some late drama perhaps?

Xander Schauffele putting in the fourth round of the 2023 Tour Championship

BOGEYS FOR CLARK AND MCILROY

These two spent the final day at LACC battling it out for the US Open a few months back and they deservedly have their names right up at the top of the leaderboard after a pair of fine seasons.

They've both made nice moves today but now Clark and McIlroy falter somewhat with bogeys, moving them back to -14 and -12 respectively.

HOVLAND PAR KEEPS HIM THREE AHEAD

Problems off the tee for Schauffele who goes way left over the trees. He recovers nicely to make a par but it's advantage Hovland after he sticks one in close on 13.

It's a good roll...but just catches the lip and rolls by quite some distance! Not the tap-in he would have wanted but it's calmy negotiated by the Norwegian back up the slope to make par and remain three ahead.

We're supposed to still have a month until the Ryder Cup but this feels like a proper Sunday matchplay singles classic. Hovland 3UP with five to play.

BIRDIE FOR RORY, BOGEY FOR COLLIN

The two swap places with McIlroy moving into solo fourth after a bounce-back birdie on the penultimate hole. Morikawa, meanwhile, serves up a three-putt at just the wrong time to drop back to -12 and a tie for fifth alongside Cantlay.

Schenk was at -12 but he's now further back at -10 after his second double bogey in four holes at 17.

HUGE PAR SAVE FROM HOVLAND ON 14

The first real sign of emotion from Hovland all day as he lets out an almighty fist pump having saved par! His second shot came up short and the chip onto the green was poor, but the putt...nerveless.

He maintains his three-shot lead with Schauffele making par and that feels like a big moment in this closing stretch.

DOUBLE BOGEY FOR MORIKAWA

The American isn't closing in style and a mistake out of the greenside bunker from the par-three 15th leads to a double bogey and three dropped shots in his last two holes.

Three-over-par today. Not his finest golf.

HOVLAND LEADS BY THREE WITH THREE TO PLAY

The par-three 15th next for the final pair and they both safely carry it beyond the flag to give themselves outside looks for birdie.

Hovland is further away, and it's a big right-to-lefter which he nurses down to the hole nicely. A solid par for him. Schauffele needs to be aggressive and try steal one here...but it's on the wrong line right from the start.

No harm with a par but he's only got three holes left now and still trails by three.

MCILROY IN THE CLUBHOUSE

Rory ends with a birdie on the par-five last to get up to -14 for the tournament and safely inside the top-five after a four-under-par 66. That's a great performance given the problems with his back that plagued his first two rounds.

A great end to another remarkably consistent season for him. His playing partner, Schenk misses out on a birdie and currently sits at T8 which also represents a fantastic season for the up-and-coming American.

Rory McIlroy: 10 consecutive top-10 finishes, the longest streak of his PGA Tour career August 27, 2023

HOVLAND MAKES BIRDIE TO GO FOUR AHEAD WITH TWO REMAINING

What a couple of holes from Viktor Hovland. A huge par save on the previous hole is followed by a superb iron shot into the 16th green to give him a great look at birdie.

Schauffele has a go for birdie before that but his effort comes up short and Hovland takes full advantage, rolling his 10-foot putt down the slope and into the cup for his first birdie of the back nine to move to -25.

He now leads by four with two left and that, should be that.

Vikto Hovland competing in the 2023 Tour Championship

BACK-TO-BACK BIRDIES AS HOVLAND EXTENDS LEAD TO FIVE

Simply relentless. It looked at one stage that this might go right down to the wire.

Not any more.

Hovland rolls in another birdie on the 17th and now, he heads the 18th tee with almost the same size lead as he started the day with. Schauffele sees his effort roll past and he settles for a par.

He's played his part and made this final round a real test for the Norwegian, but the task was just too much and he's ran out of steam on these final holes.

UP THE LAST THEY GO...

Safely on the fairway for Hovland on the par-five 18th and he can now enjoy this final work. His work is done and he will surely be your 2023 FedEx Cup champion.

VIKTOR HOVLAND WINS THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP!

Schauffele second comes up short of the green but it's a lovely up and down to find yet another birdie. A final-round 62 is some achievement and he's pushed Hovland all the way today.

The Norwegian's second shot also comes up short, rolling back into the sand. Can he get up and down for a final birdie?

You bet he can. Remarkable golf from Hovland who himself shots a seven-under-par 63 to win the Tour Championship by five shots and claim the FedEx Cup for the first time!

Viktor Hovland is the 2023 #FedExCup champion! This win @TOURChamp is his third victory of the season 🏆 pic.twitter.com/GRuHFLzDqT August 27, 2023

Simply remarkable golf from Hovland today. We saw last year from Scottie Scheffler how tricky it can be to close out these tournaments but the Norwegian was simply faultless and refused to take a backwards step.

A lot of credit, too, must go to Xander Schauffele who continues his magnificent record here with a final-round 62. He fell five shots short in the end but it felt and was a lot closer than that for large parts of the final round.

THANKS FOR TUNING IN!

Well, what a way to end the season. I didn't expect as entertaining a final round as that but thanks to Schauffele and Hovland we were treated to a real thriller.

Thanks for tuning in, until next time!

PGA Championship Round 3 live updates, leaderboard: Morikawa, Schauffele share lead after wild Moving Day at Valhalla

Shane lowry posted a 29 on his front nine on saturday, and nearly set a new record by the end of his round.

It's Moving Day at Valhalla.

Saturday at the PGA Championship started with Xander Schauffele leading the field by a single stroke. He's led the entire way so far, which is something only five other golfers in the last 40 years has pulled off.

His lead, though, didn't last. Collin Morikawa quickly overtook him on the back nine, though the two both birdied the 18th to get to 15-under on the week. That gave them a one-shot lead over what's a very packed leaderboard .

Shane Lowry nearly set a new record , too. He carded a 9-under 62, which made him just the fifth player in major championship history to ever post that score in a round. It matched Schauffele's course-record at Valhalla that he set on Thursday, and moved him up to 13-under on the week — which was good for second when he hit the clubhouse. Lowry just barely missed a birdie putt at the 18th, which would've set the record.

Sahith Theegala is alone in third headed into Sunday at 14-under. Bryson DeChambeau, who eagled the last with a chip-in, and Viktor Hovland will join Lowry at 13-under.

Tiger Woods, however, is not in the mix . He fell to 7-over after a rough start on Friday, and was among those who missed the cut. The good news, is the weather looks good after a long day of rain on Friday.

T1. Xander Schauffele (-15)

T1. Collin Morikawa

3. Sahith Theegala (-14)

T4. Shane Lowry (-13)

T4. Bryson DeChambeau

T4. Viktor Hovland

T7. Justin Rose (-12)

T7. Robert MacIntyre

More on the logjam that sits atop the leaderboard at Valhalla.

Morikawa, Schauffele birdie 18

Collin Morikawa birdied the 18th to finish out his 4-under 67 round. That moves him to 15-under on the week. Xander Schauffele matched him with an easy birdie tap-in for his 68.

The two will enter Sunday tied at 15-under in the lead.

Sahith Theegala left his eagle opportunity short, but that's the perfect lag putt. He's looking at a short birdie now at the 18th, which would move him to 14-under.

Schauffele right back

Xander Schauffele just birdied No. 17, which brings him back to 14-under and into a share of the lead.

The final group is now teeing off at 18.

Bryson DeChambeau now right in it

Well that's how you finish a round. DeChambeau just chipped in for eagle at the 18th, which brought him to 13-under and just one back from the lead. DeChambeau carded a 4-under 67 on Saturday.

Leaderboard udpdate

With the final group headed to the 17th, here's where things stand.

Leaderboard:

1. Morikawa (-14)

T2. Lowry (-13)

T2. Schauffele

T2. Theegala

T5. Rose (-12)

T5. MacIntyre

Collin Morikawa out in front

Well, that 4-way tie lasted all of about a minute.

Collin Morikawa just snuck in a birdie putt, and he's now alone in first at 14-under.

What a wild swing of events on the 15th green.

Xander Schauffele doubles, and we've got a 4-way tie

Xander Schauffele just doubled at the 15th, and we've now suddenly got a 4-way tie for the lead. An incredible two-shot swing after Sahith Theegala's chip-in birdie.

Schauffele, Morikawa, Lowry and Theegala are all tied at the top at 13-under.

Sahith Theegala again!

Sahith Theegala isn't going away. He just chipped-in perfectly from the thick stuff behind the green at the 15th for yet another birdie. He's at 13-under now.

Xander Schauffele just went long into the crowd behind the green on No. 15. A rare miss for him.

Xander Schauffele back up by 2

Xander Schauffele's lead is back to two. After a relatively slow start to the day, Schauffele now has two birdies thru five holes on the back nine. That dropped him to 15-under on the week, two shots ahead of Morikawa and Lowry.

Justin Thomas gets to 10-under

Justin Thomas just barely missed an eagle putt at 18, but that left him with an easy birdie to get to 10-under. The Louisville native is just 5 back now heading into the final round.

Sahith Theegala is bouncing right back. After a back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, Theegala's now made four birdies in his last five holes. He's tied for fourth at 12-under.

Shane Lowry's scorecard is perfect.

It's a 62 for Lowry

Shane Lowry had an 12-foot putt for history. It wasn't meant to be. Had Lowry birdied 18, he would have had the first 61 in major golf history. He missed, and will settle for merely tying history with the fifth 62 ever.

Shane Lowry: 5th round of 62 in men's major championship history; four have come in last 3 majors Lowry gained 6.4 strokes putting in today's round, a career high. His 10.6 strokes gained putting this week are the most through 3 rounds by anyone in a PGA Tour event in 2024. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 18, 2024

Schauffele to 14-under

It's a shootout, and if you want to stay on top, ya better keep making birdies. That's what Xander Schauffele is doing. He's poured in another one, this time from distance on 10. One shot lead over Lowry and Morikawa.

Shane Lowry has 61 in sight

There have been four rounds of 62 in major history. There has never been a 61. With a gettable par 5 in front of him, Shane Lowry could do it. A birdie at 17 puts him at 57 shots on the day. A birdie on 18 and we'll get the lowest round in major golf history.

He's also moved into a share of the lead (-13) with Schauffele.

Justin Thomas birdies the really hard way

Justin Thomas hit a terrible drive to the par-3 14th, putting it 30 yards left of the hole. Buried in deep rough, with a trap in his way, he flopped it like Phil and then ... watched it drop for the birdie. He's got it to 9-under.

Jordan Spieth move to 8-under

Jordan Spieth has spent the last six PGAs trying to complete the career grand slam. But not since 2019 has he been in contention.

He wasn't through Rounds 1 and 2 this year, but he has made his move on moving day. A 4-under 67 has him to 8-under on the tournament. He'll have to go really low Sunday to make it happen. But he's not out of it, something he hasn't been able to say in a few years.

Justin Rose has entered the picture

Rose has been coming all day. A birdie at 15 has him to 6-under for the day, 11-under for the tournament, in a tie for fourth.

Schauffele back on top

Xander Schauffele absolutely blasted his tee shot on the par-5 seventh. A 247-yard approach and two putts later, birdie, 13-under, leader.

Tight leaderboard

How tight is it? We've got 21 players within four shots of the lead. The list includes seven major winners.

Lowry ... again

We've got a three-way tie atop the leaderboard. Shane Lowry with another birdie at 14. He's got it to 12-under along with Xander and Morikawa.

Scottie Scheffler is bouncing back

After going 4-over on his first four holes, Scheffler has birdied two of his last three. But that last one didn't come without some drama. It wasn't a long putt — about 6 feet. Pretty routine. He didn't hit a good putt, but managed to catch the left lip and down it went.

He's got it back to 7-under.

Shane Lowry continues his heater

A lengthy roll in for birdie at 13 for Shane Lowry has him to 11-under, just one back of the lead. After firing a 6-under 29 on the front, he'd cooled off a bit. That bird at 13 was his first on the back. Still, at 6-under on his round, 62 isn't out of the question.

Collin Morikawa jumps into the lead

Collin Morikawa finally got one to fall, and Xander Schauffele's birdie putt to match went just right of the cup. That means that Morikawa has joined Schauffele at 12-under, which is two shots clear of the rest of the field.

Schauffele is even so far today, and 1-over thru his last 13 holes.

Huge group at 10-under

Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa are still locked in at 1 and 2 on the leaderboard, but there's a big group tied for third at 10-under.

The Group at 10-under

Rory back in it?

Rory McIlroy is trying to work his way back into this. He just made three straight birdies to close his front nine, and four of his last six. He's at 8-under now as he makes the turn.

Scottie Scheffler slips again

Things aren't going well for Scottie Scheffler today. He just hit it behind the fence on the 4th, and then chunked his approach up to the green. He still saved bogey, but he's at 5-under now for the week.

Shane Lowry goes low

Shane Lowry is taking full advantage of Moving Day. He just shot a 29 on the front nine to get to 10-under on the week. Suddenly, he's just two off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler double, bogey

Well, that's not a great start for Scottie Scheffler. He just doubled the second, which dropped him to T14. He then barely missed a par save at the third.

Scheffler is now 3 over thru 3 holes today, which has him 6 shots back of Xander Schauffele.

Schauffele, Morikawa holding off pack at PGA; Lowry fires 62

Shane Lowry comes within one putt of breaking the major scoring record, but settles for a leaderboard-climbing 62. (0:23)

pga tour championship final leaderboard

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the third day in a row at the PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele is at the top of the leaderboard.

This time, however, he has company.

After a birdie on the par-5 18th hole Saturday, Collin Morikawa 's 4-under 67 erased Schauffele's 1-shot lead after 36 holes. Heading into the final round at Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday, Schauffele and Morikawa are tied at 15 under, 1 stroke ahead of Sahith Theegala , who also birdied 18 to get to 14 under and solo third place.

In all, 13 golfers are within 5 shots of the lead.

After carding just one bogey all week, Schauffele made his biggest mistake of the tournament on the 15th hole. His approach from the fairway landed long left and in some of the deepest rough on the golf course. His first chip barely made it out and his second left him a long putt for bogey, which he missed.

"It was easy going there the first round. Everything felt super easy," Schauffele said of his major championship record-tying 62 on Thursday. "Felt like I've had to work for a lot of my birdies the last two days. Haven't been able to make many putts. I feel like I'm still hitting the ball -- I've got to look at the stats -- but feel like I'm hitting the ball pretty nice. If I can just get the putter going a little bit, it should free me up."

For the second major in a row, Morikawa will find himself in the final pairing; he was overwhelmed by Scottie Scheffler at the Masters and finished tied for third.

"I've played against all these guys. It's not like any of these guys are new," Morikawa said of his final-round approach. "They all have their accolades within themselves, and really anyone can go low."

Shane Lowry showed as much Saturday.

The Irishman was just 11 feet, 10 inches away from history in the third round. He had a birdie putt on the 18th green to shoot the first 61 in a major championship. But as the putt slid by on the left side, Lowry could only wince and look up at the sky in bittersweet disappointment.

A share of history would have to do.

"I enjoyed it. I enjoyed every minute of it, obviously," Lowry said. "Probably the most disappointed anyone can ever be shooting 62. I knew what was at stake. Just didn't hit the ball hard enough. Had it on a good read and just broke away from the hole."

Just two days after Schauffele tied his own record for lowest round at a major with a 9-under 62 -- a feat that had been accomplished only once before last year -- Lowry was able to join the exclusive group by shooting his own 9 under -- the fifth 62 in major championship history.

The 2019 Open Championship winner at Royal Portrush started his third round at 4 under, 8 shots back of Schauffele. He made quick work of Valhalla's front nine, carding six birdies, including four in a row from the second hole through the sixth, for a front-nine 29.

Lowry slowed down with pars on his next three holes after making the turn, but he made back-to-back birdies on the short par-4 13th hole with a 37-foot putt and the long par-3 14th thanks to a 32-foot putt. By the end of his historic round, Lowry had made 160 feet of putts.

He added another birdie on the 17th hole, giving him the chance to shoot 61 by making birdie on the par-5 18th.

Record aside, Lowry is now firmly in contention to win his second major heading into Sunday's final round, but at 13 under, he's not alone, either.

With a stunning chip-in for eagle on the 18th hole that produced the loudest roar at Valhalla on Saturday, Bryson DeChambeau closed out a 4-under round with an exclamation point that puts him 2 shots back of the leaders.

"Exhilarating. I haven't felt like that in a long time," DeChambeau said. "The only other time I felt like it was when I shot 58 at Greenbrier. That was pretty exciting there. I was pretty pumped."

After a T-6 at the Masters, the 2021 U.S. Open winner is searching for his second major and his first since joining LIV Golf.

"I've got a good chance," DeChambeau said. "I'm not executing to the level that I know I can, but playing well enough to give myself a chance, obviously."

DeChambeau's playing partner Saturday, Viktor Hovland , shot his second straight 66, taking him from 4 shots back at the start of the day to only 2 shots behind entering Sunday. Hovland has struggled this year, but after reuniting with former swing coach Joe Mayo recently, the 26-year-old appears to have turned a corner.

Another round of 66 on Sunday could net Hovland, who won the 2023 Tour Championship, his first major victory.

"I'm surprised in the sense that, just how far away I felt last week [when he tied for 24th at the Wells Fargo]," Hovland said. "But I'm not surprised in the way that I'm here because, like, I never doubted my abilities. It was just kind of my machinery was not working very well. But as soon as I get the machine kind of somewhere on track, I can play. But this has exceeded all expectations. That's for sure."

After a 7 under on Saturday that was the second-best round of the day behind Lowry, Justin Rose finished at 12 under to put himself within striking distance. The 2013 U.S. Open winner is joined by Ryder Cup teammate Robert MacIntyre , who carded his second 66 of the week to remain in contention.

This year, Valhalla has proved to be one of the easiest courses in major championship history. Not only has the course surrendered two scores of 62 already, but after two rounds, there were 78 players under the par -- the most in major history.

Heading into Sunday, 15 players are double digits under par, more than doubling the previous high at a major.

Who won the Wells Fargo Championship? Exploring final leaderboard for PGA Tour Signature Event

T he PGA Tour had two events going on this weekend, with the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina being the most notable event. It was a Signature Event, which meant an elevated and limited field. The top golfers on the tour came together to compete for one weekend.

Final leaderboard of Wells Fargo Championship

After the fourth round on May 12, here's how the Wells Fargo Championship looked:

  • Win: Rory McIlroy, -17
  • 2: Xander Schauffele, -12
  • 3: Byeong Hun An, -9
  • T4: Jason Day , -6
  • T4: Sungjae Im, -6
  • T6: Mackenzie Hughes, -5
  • T6: Denny McCarthy, -5
  • T8: Max Homa, -4
  • T8: Sepp Straka, -4
  • T10: Grayson Murray, -3
  • T10: Russell Henley, -3
  • T10: Taylor Pendrith, -3
  • T13: Corey Conners, -2
  • T13: Sam Burns, -2
  • T13: Tommy Fleetwood, -2

At the beginning of the fourth round, it was effectively a two-man race between Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele . The two were three and four shots ahead of the next-closest competition, so they weren't guaranteed to win, but they were the two primary competitors.

McIlroy ended up pulling away across the final round, shooting six under. Schauffele was even for the day, which allowed McIlroy to come back from a one-stroke deficit for his second straight win on the PGA Tour (won the Zurich Classic last time with Shane Lowry).

Though they didn't win, it was a good showing for Mackenzie Hughes, Tommy Fleetwood, Denny McCarthy, Corey Conners, Max Homa, Sepp Straka, Jason Day and reigning PGA Tour winner Taylor Pendrith.

There was no cut at this event. However, not everyone had a good weekend. A few golfers struggled. Eric Cole (+18 and dead last) shot poorly, as did Matthieu Pavon, Adam Schenk, Peter Malnati, Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, Will Zalatoris and Brian Harman.

It was also not a good showing for reigning champion Wyndham Clark. Last year, this was the first PGA Tour event he had ever won. This time, despite having a good season overall, he couldn't recapture the magic. He ended up shooting seven over and placing tied for 47th.

Who’s going to win the PGA Championship? Breaking down a crowded leaderboard

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - MAY 18: Collin Morikawa of the United States and Xander Schauffele of the United States walk on the second green during the third round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 18, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Justin Thomas predicted it so perfectly.

There’s something about this place, whether you like the course or not , that creates drama. Valhalla Golf Club does not have boring finishes. Tournaments end with playoffs, like the PGA Championships in 1996 and 2000. They end with Rory McIlroy playing through darkness and on Phil Mickelson’s and Rickie Fowler’s heels like he did to win in 2014.

So the local kid playing his first major in his hometown explained Tuesday what it is about Valhalla. The answer is that it’s straightforward. “There’s not a lot of different ways to play the golf course.” You know you’re pulling out driver. You know where to put it.

“I think when you give all of us very similar places to play from,” Thomas said, “you have the opportunity for more bunched leaderboards.”

In roughly 20 minutes Saturday evening, the 2024 PGA Championship went from a three-man race to an eight-man free-for-all with double bogeys, eagles and everything in between. Xander Schauffele lost a solo lead on 15 and fought his way back. Bryson DeChambeau chipped in on 18 to jump from the pack to right on the leaders’ heels. Shane Lowry shot a major record-tying 62 to throw himself in the mix.

Six of the biggest names in golf are within two shots of the lead on Sunday at the year’s second major championship. Two more Ryder Cuppers are within three. Fifteen are within four. And while, yes, 40 of the last 41 PGA champions started Sunday within four, it’s also a wild week in which two of the five 62s ever shot in a major have been produced, who knows if we can even rule out world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who sits eight back?

Someone is going to have a career-altering moment Sunday. Who will it be?

The front-runners

Collin morikawa (t1, 15-under-par).

Morikawa was the phenom, the next great ball-striking prodigy who won two majors by 24. Then, he slowed down. He didn’t win for two years. He hasn’t won outside of the fall in three. But we all know — when he has it — he’s as pure of an iron player as golf has to match Scheffler.

So when he entered Sunday at last month’s Masters in the final group, it felt like we had him back. Instead, he shot 74 to finish seven behind the winner, Scheffler. To have him back here again, hunting the pin on 15 while Schauffele double-bogeyed to set up their final-group pairing Sunday in Louisville, gives Morikawa a chance to put himself on another level.

PGA Championship analysis: What to know heading into the final round at Valhalla

A win takes him from a streaky young prospect who broke out during COVID-19 to joining the exclusive group of eight golfers to reach three majors this century. The way we look at him would change, allowing us to step back and view him as one of the great major players of the era because it says so much more to go through struggles and come back to win a third major four years after the first. There are more consistent golfers than Morikawa, but few can boast eight top-10 finishes in just 17 career majors. Maybe, just maybe, he is the prodigy we thought.

Xander Schauffele (T1, 15-under)

He was finally having his moment. His chance to prove he had the weekend resiliency to hit the clutch shots and grab a major. As his playing partners stuck in neutral around him, Schauffele hit a 30-foot birdie putt to take a two-shot lead at Valhalla with four holes to go. Once he put his tee shot on 15 into the fairway, one wondered: Is Schauffele really gonna do it?

Then he airmailed the green by 20 yards. Then his pitch from the rough went only a few feet. He double-bogeyed 15, and it would have been so easy for all to say it was the same old Xander. To his credit, Schauffele closed Saturday with birdies on 17 and 18.

Nobody has more to gain Sunday than Schauffele. He’s already becoming known as the best player without a major, but worse than that, he’s becoming known as someone who can’t close on Sunday. Three times this year already, Schauffele entered Sunday in a final group. He didn’t win any, and two of them he finished four and five back.

He’s one of the most consistent golfers on Earth, maybe behind only Scheffler. He’s only 30 and has 12 top-10 major finishes. But that consistency is now an albatross around Schauffele’s neck until he quiets the noise.

The potential breakout star

Sahith theegala (3rd, 14-under).

While so many of the names on this board are known commodities, Theegala is the one introducing himself to the greater sports world this weekend. Golf nerds know of the 26-year-old rising star’s absurd talent and promise. But in reality, he has only one top-20 major finish, and even that was a late Sunday 67 to come out of nowhere. He hasn’t been in a true pressure situation in a major.

That means two things. One, we have no clue how he’ll handle it. Two, the sports world finally will see one of golf’s more fun and interesting personalities with an awesome playing style going for a major.

His track record on Sundays isn’t great. He gave away a Sunday lead at the 2022 Waste Management Open with an unlucky bounce on 17. He double-bogeyed 18 at the 2022 Travelers to go from leading to handing Schauffele a win. And his only career win was a fall event, the Fortinet Championship.

But Theegala is an awesome ball striker, a great putter and, after years of driving woes, he’s hitting it great off the tee in 2023. If Theegala wins Sunday, he might become one of the most popular players in golf. He might anyway.

The red-hot hunters

Bryson dechambeau (t4, 13-under).

When DeChambeau chipped from the fringe off 18 green and sunk his final shot Saturday for eagle to thrust himself into the Sunday conversation, he let out the most sincere and raw fist pump anyone had ever seen from the iconoclastic star. It served as a reminder — just as his hot start at the Masters did — of the truth about DeChambeau: Golf hated DeChambeau. It’s now so, so happy to have him back.

Bryson DeChambeau EAGLES on 18 😱 He's ONE BACK off the lead! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/9vODJiMbXF — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 18, 2024

Winning Sunday isn’t just validation for DeChambeau. It’s not even just legacy building. It makes us take him seriously from here on out.

The 2020-2021 version of Bryson felt like a fever dream. Almost a fad. He was this polarizing, idiosyncratic thick boy who blew our minds, challenged norms and annoyed a lot of people. When he won the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, it solidified his philosophies. But we must remember DeChambeau had just two top-10s in his first 23 majors. Then he went to LIV, and you remember most fads go away.

But DeChambeau worked his ass off and fought to get back. He has three top-10s in the last six majors. This week might be four in seven. He’s become more likable. He’s a YouTube and Snapchat star. He’s even more self-aware. But he’s still different. Still a little weird. And if he wins Sunday, he’s here to stay. Maybe for the better.

“I’ve worked really hard to have people help hopefully understand who I am a little bit better,” he said.

Viktor Hovland (T4, 13-under)

Let’s call it how it is. Viktor Hovland was the best golfer in the world eight months ago. Pretending he wasn’t is revisionist history. He stared down Scheffler two weeks in a row to win in Chicago and then Atlanta for the Tour Championship. He and Ludvig Åberg beat Scheffler and Brooks Koepka in the largest Ryder Cup match blowout ever.

And then he messed with it all.

It’s been covered in depth , but Hovland went down a rabbit hole of fixing his excellent swing, switching between four coaches in a year and having by far the worst season of his career. Now he’s back with Joe Mayo (his coach during last season’s heater) and finds himself shooting consecutive 66s with fantastic iron play to sit two back entering Sunday. It only makes us sad, realizing this could have been Hovland all year.

He’s 26, and he has catching up to do to his peers, but Hovland remains the bright-burning supernova who could surpass anyone if he finds his stride. A Hovland win isn’t so much a monkey off Hovland’s back as it is the much-anticipated step toward a massive launch.

Shane Lowry (T4, 13-under)

You thought Lowry was a good ol’ lovable one-hit wonder, didn’t you? You were within your rights to. Lowry ran away with the 2019 Open Championship, but he’s never been a top-15 player in the world. You might have viewed him as the funny, large Irishman who’s friends with Rory McIlroy.

But Lowry just shot a 62. That’s tied for the best major round in history (Schauffele also shot 62 here Thursday). He’s been in multiple major final groups. He’s learned from his 6-over Sunday at the 2016 U.S. Open against Dustin Johnson. And he’s putting out of his mind this week, leading the field in it.

Lowry has the chance to go from one-hit wonder with a great personality to a key person in golf history. He’d suddenly be a guy who has won two different majors at two extremely different courses, who has played on two Ryder Cup teams and won one.

“To win one is pretty good,” Lowry said Saturday, “but to win multiple, you’re kind of a bit of a different level.”

pga tour championship final leaderboard

Justin Rose (T7, 12-under)

Did you know Justin Rose has been world No. 1 five times? Did you know he’s played on six Ryder Cup teams with four European wins? Did you know he has 25 professional wins?

He has been a steady force in the golf world for 20 years, but do you think of him the way you do Dustin Johnson? Or Justin Thomas? Or even a Jose Maria Olazabal type? Whether you should or shouldn’t is a different discussion, but Rose getting a second major immediately recontextualizes his career. He was a lightning bolt at the 2023 Ryder Cup, hitting multiple massive putts in Europe’s win. That combined with a PGA Championship win to add to his 2013 U.S. Open win at Merion takes Rose from solid career to one of the best European golfers of the century.

Robert MacIntyre (T7, 12-under)

Few think MacIntyre can win this thing. But few thought MacIntyre deserved a Ryder Cup spot, and he earned it on points. The Scotsman has two 66s this week, and glossing over him might be a mistake.

Yes, MacIntyre winning might be viewed as a random winner. It coming at a PGA Championship (often viewed as the lowest of the four majors) wouldn’t help. But it would make us respect the 27-year-old who came over from Europe to play his first PGA Tour season this year.

go-deeper

'A happy Bob ... is a dangerous Bob': The PGA field is learning that about MacIntyre

Other names to watch

Dean Burmester (9th, 11-under): Burmester won the LIV event in Doral this year and is a great course fit as an awesome tee-to-green player.

Justin Thomas (T10, 10-under): A local star coming from five back in his hometown and earning a third major after a brutal two years of struggles? You can’t write it better.

Tony Finau (T10, 10-under): He’s striking the living daylights out of the ball, but he’s become a horrible putter the last two years. Right now, he’s gaining strokes putting. If he can get hot on the greens for one day, he can go crazy low and earn his first major.

Rory McIlroy (T19, 8-under): Rory shooting Sunday 64s when seemingly out of it for a backdoor top-5 has become something of a meme in recent years. Now you’re telling me he’s seven back at a course that’s allowed two 62s this week? At the course he won his last major at? To catch Koepka at five majors? It’s a long shot, but it’s possible.

Jordan Spieth (T19, 8-under): He’s going for the career grand slam, and the one thing we know about Spieth is he can get hot.

Scottie Scheffler (T24, 7-under): Oh, you’re gonna bet your life on Scottie Scheffler not shooting a 59? I didn’t think so.

Friday’s frenzy catches up to Scottie Scheffler, who tumbles down the leaderboard Saturday at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler made two bogeys and a double over his first four holes on Saturday, tumbling into a tie for 24th, eight shots back of 54-hole leader Collin Morikawa.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Scottie Scheffler arrived at the golf course in plenty of time Saturday. Once he got there, nothing felt quite right.

A day after he powered through his odyssey to the jailhouse, then back to the course just in time to get to the opening tee box, Scheffler enjoyed a more regular schedule but struggled to keep things together at the PGA Championship.

He shot 2-over 73 in the third round to close at 7 under for the tournament and drop from fourth to a tie for 24th. It snapped a string of 42 straight rounds of par or better for the world’s top player, dating to Saturday at the Tour Championship last year.

Though he said his arrest and trip to a holding cell the day before left his heart thumping and his head spinning, it didn’t show on the course or the scoreboard; he shot 66 in Round 2. A day later, he was still adjusting to the stunning events of the previous 36 hours.

“I definitely did not feel like myself today,” he said. “Yesterday happened, I did my best to recover from it and come out and compete. This morning was not my usual routine for a round. At the end of the day, I came out hoping to have a good round but I wasn’t able to get it done, which was frustrating.”

He started losing ground even before he stepped onto the course. Justin Rose and Shane Lowry led the way, shooting 64 and 62 in a group more than an hour ahead of Scheffler’s.

But this was no day for going low for the reigning Masters champion.

He made two bogeys and a double over his first four holes, finished the front nine in 38, and shot his worst round of the season. Even though he struggled, he still felt the love. Chants of “Scottie, Scottie, Scottie,” were scattered across the course, never louder than when he made a short birdie putt on 18 to close the day.

Before that, it was an ugly mix of missed tee shots, bad lies in the rough and a few struggles with the putter that had more or less gone away during a season in which he has won four times.

“I was battling as hard as I could all day but every time I’d make a birdie, I’d bogey the next hole,” he said. “Way too many mistakes today. Obviously I’m pretty frustrated with the result.”

His struggles started on the par-4 second, where his approach shot landed deep in the rough to the left of the green. It took him two shots to get to the putting surface and he made double bogey.

On No. 4, his tee shot landed left of a fence in a penalty area to the left of the green. After taking a drop, Scheffler chunked the next chip. He made a 10-foot putt to save bogey.

He made two birdies after that, but three-putted from 30 feet on the par-3 eighth, the second putt a push from 3 feet that took a 270-degree spin and stayed out.

Scheffler’s 73 was better than only five players in the 78-man field.

One possible boost for Sunday will be the return of his caddie, Ted Scott. Scott left town to attend his daughter’s high school reunion, leaving the bag duties to Scheffler’s friend, the tour chaplain Brad Payne.

Scott is scheduled to return for the final round, which will start much earlier than Scheffler might have expected on a week where very little has gone to plan.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Viktor Hovland dominates to hoist FedEx Cup after second straight victory

Hovland pulled off the rare bmw championship, tour championship double to claim an $18 million grand prize.

The summer heat wave sweeping across the United States has a new name: Viktor Hovland. Running away from the field in record fashion at the 2023 Tour Championship, Hovland finished the week at 27 under and five strokes clear of Xander Schauffele to claim his first FedEx Cup.

Beginning the week at 8 under, Hovland was the top name on both the official leaderboard and the shadow leaderboard (which the Official World Golf Rankings recognizes) as his 72-hole total of 19-under 261 matched that of Schauffele's.

The young Norwegian became just the fifth man to claim the final two legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. In the process, he cashed a pair of checks amounting to $21.6 million, $18 million of which came this week for winning the FedEx Cup.

Hovland did most of the heavy lifting early in the week, but the laidback Sunday stroll most envisioned was anything but stress-free. Starting off the final round with a six-stroke lead, the 25-year-old was faced with immediate stress as a two-hour weather delay arrived just as he was lining up a 15-foot par putt on No. 2.

While all 29 of Hovland's counterparts were busy on the driving range in the lead up to the restart, he was hanging out on the putting green. Practicing a left-to-right tickler, Hovland's added reps paid dividends as his successful conversion for par was met with an unsuccessful birdie bid from Schauffele.

Schauffele, the unofficial king of East Lake Golf Club, mustered together a mighty charge. Five birdies on his front nine saw the 2017 Tour Championship winner turn in 30, the lowest front-nine score of the week. Hovland's lead foot was heavy on the gas pedal in lockstep with his playing competitor as Schauffele's front-nine heater was only able to trim the edge to five.

Avid golf fans know a tournament doesn't start until the back nine on Sunday. Take a look at Hovland seven days ago, and birdies from the blade of Schauffele on the 11th and 12th cut the front runner's lead to three and pumped blood back into the heart of the postseason finale.

Heartbeats of spectators and players began to pulse even faster as pressure ramped up and shots were magnified. Right when it looked like Hovland's margin would get cut once again, the man who has done no wrong the last week found an extra gear and let out a hearty fist pump when his par putt from 23 feet -- his longest made putt of the week -- found the bottom of the cup on the 14th.

The championship was put on ice with that conversion, and Hovland's ascension to the top of the sport was official roughly an hour later. Complete throughout his game and throughout his mind, Hovland proved yet again to be a quick study and aced this year's final with flying colors. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the leaderboard at the 2023 Tour Championship.

2. Xander Schauffele (-22): Take away Hovland, and Schauffele wins the FedEx Cup running away. That pretty much sums up his season as he enjoyed the best statistical year of his career but walks away without a win. He ran into a bulldozer at the Wells Fargo Championship, and the same was true this week. Schauffele continued to be one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour in 2023 as he racked up 17 top 20s in 23 starts and did not miss a single cut. Grade: A+

3. Wyndham Clark (-16): What a year for Clark. A first-time PGA Tour winner turned major champion turned top-three finisher in the FedEx Cup. His rise to the upper echelon of the game has been a joy to watch, and it begs the question: What will next year have in store? Enjoying one of the five best seasons on the PGA Tour this year, Clark proved to have the game and mettle in the big moment. He will head to Rome as one of the many rookies on the U.S. Ryder Cup team where this new affinity for the bright lights will be needed for the American side. Grade: A

4. Rory McIlroy (-14): The back injury took center stage at East Lake for the three-time FedEx Cup champion. Unable to hit any shots leading up to the tournament, McIlroy did well to get around East Lake in even par Thursday and remain within three strokes of the lead after beginning at 7 under. However, without the vintage McIlroy firepower, that was the closest he would get to the top as he ultimately became a non-factor in the championship. It would have been a nice bow on a stellar summer that featured 10 straight top-10 finishes dating back to the PGA Championship. Grade: A-

T6. Collin Morikawa (-11): He clipped Tiger Woods' 36-hole scoring record by two at East Lake, but that was as good as it got for the two-time major champion. He would have become the first player to start from 1 under to win the FedEx Cup and would have done so in a season where he once again was winless. It has now been more than two years since Morikawa has won on the PGA Tour, but there should not be any cause for concern. This season marked the best of his career in terms of total strokes gained and strokes gained around the green. Grade: B+

T6. Scottie Scheffler (-11): The world No. 1 entered the week atop the FedEx Cup standings only to relinquish his edge with a poor opening round. Scheffler did well to bounce back Friday -- when he gained nearly two strokes on the greens -- but the putting woes lurked and spelled his demise ending the week dead last with the putter. This year had all the makings of one of the all-time seasons on the PGA Tour as Scheffler led in strokes gained tee to green, strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained approach. He was only able to notch a pair of victories when a minimum of five felt certain as his 145th-ranked flat stick proved to be a constant hindrance. He became the first player in the staggered start era to begin the week with the lead and finish outside the top five. Grade: C

T18. Jon Rahm (-7): The Spaniard led the FedEx Cup for 30 consecutive weeks, entered the postseason in pole position but stumbled when it mattered most. Forgettable outings at the St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship put Rahm at 6 under to start the Tour Championship. He got within four at the halfway point before heading in the wrong direction on Moving Day. The big left miss was heavy on the mind of Rahm with the driver in hand and mirrored early spring troubles he endured. Despite a relatively quiet summer, Rahm should be the PGA Tour Player of the Year with a Masters title, three other victories and his runner up at The Open. Grade: C-

27. Jordan Spieth (+1): While he was lucky to qualify for the Tour Championship, the 2015 FedEx Cup champ did nothing with his good fortune. Spieth ranked outside the top half in each strokes gained category and put the finishing touches on a year that did not include a single trophy. The injuries the week of the Wells Fargo Championship sent his season into a frenzy, and not even the rollercoaster that is Spieth could get his game back on track. Grade: D

Rick Gehman is joined by Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme to break down Viktor Hovland's clinical performance at the Tour Championship. He is the 2023 FedEx Cup Champion. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Hovland up four with two to go

That will do it. Viktor Hovland birdies the 16th to get to 25 under and four clear of Schauffele. Xander did his best to make this thing interesting, but the par save from Hovland on the 14th really put it on ice.

Huge save for Hovland

That was the longest putt Hovland has converted all week, and it came at a momentous time. Jarring a 23-foot par save on the 14th after a poor chip, Hovland maintained his three-stroke lead with four holes to play. The Norwegian flashes a fist pump just as it seems like things were going the other way.
