5.0 BINDING ARBITRATION AGREEMENT, CLASS ACTION WAIVER, AND WAIVER OF CERTAIN RIGHTS.

YOU AND MARGARITAVILLE AT SEA® EACH AGREE THAT ANY DISPUTE OR CLAIM RELATING IN ANY WAY TO YOUR PASS WILL BE RESOLVED BY BINDING ARBITRATION, WITH THE SOLE EXCEPTION OF CLAIMS THAT QUALIFY FOR SMALL CLAIMS COURT AS SET FORTH BELOW.

YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU AND MARGARITAVILLE AT SEA® ARE EACH WAIVING THE RIGHT TO FILE A LAWSUIT AND THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL. YOU AND MARGARITAVILLE AT SEA® ALSO AGREE THAT ANY AND ALL DISPUTES MUST BE BROUGHT IN THE PARTIES’ INDIVIDUAL CAPACITIES. YOU AND MARGARITAVILLE AT SEA® THEREFORE AGREE TO WAIVE ANY RIGHT TO LITIGATE OR ARBITRATE ANY CLAIMS AS A CLASS ACTION OR OTHER REPRESENTATIVE OR COLLECTIVE ACTION.

Neither you nor Margaritaville at Sea® may act as a class representative or private attorney general, nor participate as a member of a class of claimants, with respect to any Claim in any state or federal court. Claims may not be arbitrated on a class or representative basis. The arbitrator can decide only your and/or Margaritaville at Sea® individual Claims. The arbitrator may not consolidate or join the claims of other persons or parties who may be similarly situated.

THIS SECTION LIMITS CERTAIN RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO MAINTAIN A COURT ACTION, THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL, THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY FORM OF CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE CLAIM, THE RIGHT TO ENGAGE IN DISCOVERY EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN AAA RULES, AND THE RIGHT TO CERTAIN REMEDIES AND FORMS OF RELIEF. OTHER RIGHTS THAT YOU OR MARGARITAVILLE AT SEA® WOULD HAVE IN COURT ALSO MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ARBITRATION.

The arbitrator will have the exclusive authority to resolve any dispute relating to the formation, interpretation, applicability, or enforceability of these terms and conditions including this binding arbitration provision, including the arbitrability of any dispute and any claim that all or any part of this binding arbitration provision is void or voidable. However, if Margaritaville at Sea® believes that any claim you have filed in arbitration or in court is inconsistent with this agreement’s limitation on class and representative actions, then you agree that we may seek an order from a court determining whether your claim is within the scope of the class action waiver.

In the event of a dispute, you agree to send a notice of dispute, which is a written statement that sets forth your name, address, and contact information; the facts giving rise to the dispute and relevant documents; and the relief requested to Margaritaville at Sea® at 431 Fairway Drive, Suite 300, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441, Attention: Kevin Sheehan. Margaritaville at Sea® will send any notice of dispute to you at the contact information that they have for you. You and Margaritaville at Sea® agree to attempt to resolve the dispute through good-faith negotiation within sixty (60) days from the date the notice of dispute is sent. After that sixty (60) day period and not before, you or Margaritaville at Sea® may commence an arbitration or small-claims-court proceeding.

You or Margaritaville at Sea® may assert claims in small claims court instead of in arbitration if the claims qualify. Additionally, if the claims asserted in any request or demand for arbitration could have been brought in small claims court, then either you or Margaritaville at Sea® may elect to have the claims heard in small claims court, rather than in arbitration, at any time before the arbitrator is appointed, by notifying the other party of that election in writing. Any dispute about whether a claim qualifies for small claims court shall be resolved by that court, not by an arbitrator. In the event of any such dispute, the arbitration proceeding shall remain closed unless and until a decision by the small claims court that the claim should proceed in arbitration.

If Margaritaville at Sea® and you do not resolve a dispute by informal negotiation or in small claims court, the dispute shall be resolved by binding arbitration before a single neutral arbitrator whose decision will be final. Arbitration will be administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under the AAA’s rules, which are available at www.adr.org or by calling 1-800-788-7879. Payment of all filing, administrative and arbitrator fees and costs will be governed by the AAA’s rules. You are required to pay the AAA’s initial filing fee if you initiate the dispute, but Margaritaville at Sea® will reimburse you for this filing fee at the conclusion of the arbitration to the extent it exceeds the fee for filing a complaint in a federal or state court in your county (or parish) of residence. If the arbitrator finds that either the substance of your claim or the relief sought was frivolous or was brought for an improper purpose (as measured by the standards set forth in Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11(b)), then the payment of all fees will be governed by the AAA Rules, and Margaritaville at Sea® will not reimburse your initial filing fee and may seek applicable fee-shifting. Arbitration may be conducted in person, through the submission of documents, by phone or online. Proceedings that cannot be conducted through the submission of documents, by phone or online, will take place in Palm Beach County, Florida; provided, however, that if circumstances prevent you from traveling to Palm Beach County, Florida, AAA may hold an in-person hearing in your hometown area. Margaritaville at Sea® and you agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal or state courts located in Palm Beach County, Florida to compel arbitration, to stay proceedings pending arbitration, or to confirm, modify, vacate, or enter judgment on the award entered by the arbitrator. The arbitrator may award damages to you individually as a court could, including declaratory or injunctive relief, but only to the extent required to satisfy your individual claim. The substantive law of Florida shall apply in the arbitration proceedings.

Except as provided above with respect to jurisdiction in Palm Beach County, Florida, nothing in this arbitration provision shall be construed as consent by Margaritaville at Sea® to the jurisdiction of any other court with regard to disputes, claims or controversies unrelated to this agreement.

This agreement to binding arbitration evidences a transaction in interstate commerce, and thus the Federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. §§ 1-16, governs its interpretation and enforcement. This agreement to binding arbitration will survive its termination. If any portion of this agreement to binding arbitration is deemed invalid or unenforceable, the remaining portions shall nevertheless remain in force.

This Pass Binding Arbitration Agreement and Class Action Waiver governs any dispute or claim relating to your Pass; to the extent there is a conflict between this Pass Binding Arbitration Agreement and Class Action Waiver and any dispute resolution provision of any other applicable terms, conditions or agreements, this Pass Binding Arbitration Agreement and Class Action Waiver governs.

Limitation on Time to File Claims

ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF, RELATING TO, OR IN CONNECTION WITH THESE PARADISE PASS TERMS AND CONDITIONS MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.

Margaritaville at Sea Cruise Tips

Aug 7, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Did you know Margaritaville had a cruise line that offers a 2-night cruise? Margaritaville at Sea is a recent addition to the Margaritaville brand, and their first ship. This cruise is for you if you want a quick trip from the Port of Palm Beach to the Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. It is not a luxury ship but a fun way to ferry to the Bahamas.

Margaritaville ar Sea Sail Away

Thank you to Margaritaville at Sea for hosting us.

We just returned from a 2-night, 3-day cruise on Margaritaville at Sea. We went on this cruise when it was the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line , as our daughter's first cruise, so we had a good idea of what to expect. The ship has transformed since the rebranding. Margaritaville at Sea had its maiden voyage in May 2022.

I enjoyed the ship's inviting atmosphere with all the Jimmy Buffet visual accents. With a small 30-year-old ship, it is a different experience than going on a brand new mega-ship, but with the right friends and attitude, we had a fun vacation. And with their low fares and only 3-day trips is a fun way to get away.

Prepare for Your Margaritaville at Sea Cruise

There are lots of add-ons and extra charges. So, before your trip, review all the options so you can budget properly. Here are some upcharges that we experienced and would recommend.

Faster Chill Package

Margaritaville at Sea Unique Two-Night Itinerary

Day 1: departure from florida's port of palm beach.

Your journey to Margaritaville at Sea begins as you board the ship at the Port of Palm Beach. Since we live in South Florida, leaving from the Port of Palm Beach is so easy. If you are new to the area, we recommend visiting the Manatees next door (especially in the colder months). If you drive, the only option is to valet park. If you book the express check-in, look for the VIP stand so you can have your bags appropriately tagged. You will go through security and check your bags in before heading upstairs. Once you are checked in, you can book any reservations at the tables from dining to spa.

Once onboard, head straight to the back of the boat on Deck 10 to the Port of Indecision Buffet. We like to sit outside next to the Five o Clock Somewhere Bar. If you are a fan of Jimmy Buffet, you will love the decor on the back of the boat. After lunch, you will want to tour the ship until your room is ready. There is a muster drill at 4 pm. I got a massage at 5 pm, right after the muster drill. If I did it over again, I would go to the spa on the way home instead so I did not feel so rushed. I like to be outside for the sail away party, which is generally around 5 pm. The Kids Clubs open at 6:30 pm. We had dinner with Heather and her family at JWB Prime Steak & Seafood.

The kids loved the kid's clubs. They took them to the show and then to a pizza party. Then we all went to the show again together.

Margaritaville ar Sea Kids Club

Day 2: Arriving at Grand Bahama Island

Wake up to the beautiful water of Grand Bahama Island, a true Caribbean gem! This tropical paradise welcomes you. The Island has pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant culture. Embark on various shore excursions, from snorkeling adventures to relaxing beach getaways. We went to Grand Luycayan and spent the day swimming, drinking, and watching the kids playing various games with the DJ and staff.

If you plan to spend the day there, get off the boat quickly. It gets crowded on ship days. They serve lunch poolside with a buffet and a pizza shop where you can order pizza and salads. The pizza was so yummy.

Margaritaville ar Sea Grand Lucayan

This is a reminder that you can eat dinner in the main dining room at 5:45 or 8pm. We opted for the earlier dining and then saw the comedian after. Then the kids wanted to return to Kids Club, so we had a drink while they played before bed.

Day 3: Return to Florida's Port of Palm Beach

In the morning, you can have breakfast at the buffet or pay an upcharge for a champagne breakfast. Just remember you need to be out of the room by 9 am. We bought our luggage with us for breakfast. You could also leave it outside of your room the night before. Then listen for your departure notification. You can travel with a birth certificate, but getting off the ship is much faster if you have a US Passport.

Margaritaville Cruise Ship: Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Deck Plans

Embark on a Two-Night Cruise with Margaritaville at Sea! 🚢

Experience the offerings of Margaritaville at Sea as you set sail on a captivating two-night cruise filled with entertainment and adventure. From the comfort of your chosen stateroom to the onboard activities, you can have lots of fun

Passenger Decks: Comfort and Style at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea Rooms

We enjoyed staying in two well-appointed rooms - an interior stateroom and an exterior stateroom. Both had the charm and style of Margaritaville, providing ample space for our comfort. The interior room accommodates 4 people and features a double bunk bed that is cleverly pulled down from the wall, while the exterior room accommodates 3 people and has a large porthole and an additional pull-down bed for convenience. We loved the room's ambiance and design, though the shower was the only slightly compact space.

Poolside Entertainment: Groove by the Pool

The poolside area is a vibrant atmosphere of live music and dancing. We discovered two small pools as we reveled in the fun-filled ambiance. While we decided to skip a dip, there is a lively poolside experience if you want it.

Adults Only Area: Indulge in Serenity

After my massage, I explored the adults-only area. The bar, pool, and two hot tubs are a fun place to hang out if you are traveling with just adults.

Duty-Free Shopping: Discover Treasures

Indulge in retail therapy with a visit to the onboard store, where we found delightful souvenirs to cherish. From adorable pig and cruise ship stuffed animals to beautiful dolphin earrings, there's something for everyone to take home as a cherished memory.

Entertainment: Music, Games, and Theater

Get ready to be entertained throughout the journey with live music, engaging games, and contests. The enchanting performances at the Theater added an extra magic touch to the onboard experience.

St. Somewhere Spa: Relaxation and Renewal

The St. Somewhere spa offers an array of treatments for nails, hair, and body. While the pricing was similar to local spas, it was a fun addition to our trip without the added fluff of a traditional spa.

Dining Options: A Culinary Journey

Satisfy your taste buds with a range of dining options to choose from. The Port of Indecision Buffet, Fins - the main dining room, and JWB Prime Steak & Seafood - a premium steakhouse available at Margaritaville's resorts and hotels - promise a yummy experience. For island-inspired treats, Margaritaville Coffee & Pastry offers a delightful culinary journey.

Fitness Center, Dice Casino, and Kids Club: Something for Everyone

Stay active at the fitness center, indulge in some luck at the Dice Casino, and let the little ones create memories at the Kids Club. There are activities for every age on Margaritaville at Sea.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Read: The Easiest Way to Renew Your Passport

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Vacation

Heading out on a Caribbean vacation? Not sure what to expect? Maybe you’re setting sail or hopping on a plane for your first ever island vacay and you aren’t sure what to pack. First of all, that’s super exciting! Second of all – we’ve got you! We’ve put together a handy dandy packing checklist that outlines everything you need to enjoy your sunny southern sojourn with some bonus tips and info about what to expect while you enjoy those island vibes.

The Essentials

passport for margaritaville cruise

No matter what type of vacation you’re taking, it’s important to make sure that you pack ‘The Essentials’ so that you can enjoy your much-deserved trip with peace of mind. Make absolutely certain that you pack your (valid) passport, important travel documents (like the name, address, and booking confirmations for your resort or cruise ship), and the phone number and policy info for your travel insurance provider. It’s a good idea to leave a copy of each of these items at home with someone you trust and store digital versions in your email account or in the cloud. Verify that your passport and the passports of your travel buddies are valid as soon as you book your trip and renew it ASAP if it’s expired.

When packing prescription medications, make sure that they’re stored in their packaging from the pharmacy to avoid any confusion at airport security. Be sure to pack enough for the duration of your trip, and then some.

Be sure to arrive to your destination with some cash in hand. Many vendors in tourist areas of Caribbean countries accept US dollars alongside their own currency, but be sure to think about where you’ll be spending money so you can be prepared. Check with your bank to find out what you need to know about withdrawing more cash on-island if you need it.

Vacay Must-Haves

passport for margaritaville cruise

You’re probably traveling to the Caribbean for lots of sun, sand, surf, and of course, to have your Best Day Ever. To make sure you can enjoy the sun’s rays and the sparkling seas most comfortably, you’ve gotta pack the right stuff!

When it comes to clothing, pack lots of light, airy, and light-colored items to ensure that you can keep cool even when it’s hot, hot, hot. While most of your time will likely be spent in a bathing suit and sandals, be sure to pack some comfy tops and shorts/lightweight pants and a pair of sneakers in case you’re partaking in an active excursion or walking tour.

The Caribbean is known for being laid back, but some resorts feature restaurants with dress codes, and cruises will definitely feature a formal night, or something like it. Pack at least one or two ‘nice’ outfits for when the occasion arises. It doesn’t need to be super fancy (unless the dress code specifically states black tie), but khaki dress pants, collared shirts, a few nice sundresses, and closed-toe shoes will go a long way when you want to jazz things up a bit.

On the topic of bathing suits, pack at least two sets of swimming gear so that you always have a dry suit. To make it easy to zip outta the pool and up to the bar or restaurant, pack a swimsuit cover up that’s easy to throw in your beach bag and over your suit when it’s time to get out of the water.

When it comes to beach bags, make sure that yours is either water-resistant, or you’ve packed some plastic bags to separate your wet items from your other belongings. Be sure to stock that bag with some high SPF sunscreen (the sun’s rays are way stronger in the Caribbean than you’re probably used to!), some sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. No one wants to be sunburnt while trying to have fun, and with these essentials on you at all times you’ll be well protected. While you can buy all of these items on the island, you’ll be better off buying your preferred brands at home.

Nice to Have

passport for margaritaville cruise

While we’re pretty certain that time spent at a Margaritaville Caribbean location is more than enough to make it the Best Day Ever, we recognize that you might not be able to spend every day of your vacay sipping our frozen beverages and enjoy our water attractions, bars, and restaurants. We get it. Lucky for you, we also have a specific checklist for your daytime visit to a Margaritaville Caribbean location . You’re welcome.

To waste away the days you’re NOT at Margaritaville, you’ll want to pack some entertainment for those long, lazy days at the beach. Pack some books, magazines, or an e-reader if you’re short on luggage space. There’s no better time to dive in to a new book than when you’re lazing by the pool or in a beach chair, so pack a beach read and dive on in.

To capture your Best Day Ever memories (and then some!), be sure to pack a camera. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fancy-schmancy digital camera, a smartphone, or a disposable camera – the point is, you’re capturing memories for life. You can even buy waterproof smartphone cases that will allow you to take some underwater shots right on your phone! If you want to take things to the next level, splurging on an action/underwater camera will mean that you can be a paparazzo wherever you go, especially if you’re planning on zip-lining, scuba diving, or snorkeling.

If you weren’t ready for those island vibes before, we’re sure you are now! So pack that suitcase, slap on that SPF, don a pair shades, and you’re ready to have your Best Day Ever (and best vacation ever!) at one of our 7 Margaritaville Caribbean locations where it’s always 5 o’clock!

passport for margaritaville cruise

Called the Heroes Paradise Pass and featuring the same benefits as the Ultimate Paradise Pass, this pass can be a great option for regular cruisers. The Ultimate Paradise Pass normally retails for $999, so this represents a significant discount.

As you can see, the Heroes Paradise Pass allows you to sail as many times as you’d like this year. The pass also includes double occupancy — and you must bring a guest with you when you travel.

However, you’ll also want to be aware of a few things:

Booking fees : $29.99 per stateroom for weekday departures (Sunday to Wednesday) and $49.99 per stateroom for weekend departures (Thursday to Saturday).

Must call 800-814-7100 to reserve your room.

Pass blackout dates : May 25, 2024, Aug. 30, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024.

Bookings cannot be made back to back.

Only valid for two-night sailings.

Includes : 10% off packages and excursions (booked on board), 10% discount for retail purchases (excluding food, beverage, casino and spa purchases).

Before purchasing the pass, even at $299 for the year, you’ll want to crunch the numbers to make sure that the figures add up. Because you’re still on the hook for booking fees, port charges and gratuities, you’ll want to factor those in to find the number of times you’ll need to cruise to break even.

Pay your taxes and fees with a card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to be eligible for the complimentary travel insurance it offers.

Margaritaville at Sea! Everything About the New Buffett-Themed Cruise Line

Margaritaville at Sea — if you’re familiar with Jimmy Buffett and the plentiful endeavors from restaurants to resorts that bear the Margaritaville name (and at this point, who isn’t?) — then you might have a good idea of what to expect.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailaway

The name in this case applies to the Buffett-centric cruise line sailing from Florida to The Bahamas that made its debut in May 2022. For those who love the water and are fans of the “beachy” lifestyle associated with the singer, then the cruise line may be an option compared to the larger mass-market lines.

But there’s lots to know about Margaritaville at Sea, as it is very different in some ways than the cruise lines you might be more familiar with. Here’s what to know…

One Itinerary Offered, With 2-Night Cruises to Grand Bahama Island

Perhaps most unique about Margaritaville is the itinerary.

Look at the options for a typical cruise line and what’s offered can be overwhelming. That’s not the case with Margaritaville at Sea. For now, the cruise line only offers two-night trips over the Grand Bahama. Cruises depart every other day.

So you’ll board in Palm Beach, cruise out in the early evening and dock in The Bahamas the next day. After that, you cruise back to Florida.

Want a longer stay? The cruise line also offers “Cruise & Stay” packages. So you sail over, spend either four or six nights at a hotel on the island (Grand Lucayan or Wyndham Fortuna Beach) and then sail back after your stay.

But if you were planning on a classic cruise for 7-nights hitting all sorts of Caribbean ports, that’s not the case… at least as of now.

Margaritaville at Seas Sails From Palm Beach

Palm Beach cruise port map

When it comes to cruising, Florida is king. Ports like Miami, Port Canaveral, and Port Everglades see millions of passengers each year. Margaritaville at Sea, however, sails from the Port of Palm Beach, about 45 miles north of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

That’s a bit of a double-edged sword. On the plus side, as the only cruise line serving the port, it can make it easy to navigate versus the larger and busier cruise ports around the rest of the state. In other words, if you want to just hit the port and get on the ship, it’s easy to do.

On the downside, if you don’t live in Florida, then it’s a little harder to make your way to the ship. Major airports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale are a considerable distance for anyone thinking of flying in.

As You’d Expect, There’s a Major Buffett Theme

passport for margaritaville cruise

There shouldn’t be much doubt given the name, but Margaritaville at Sea is completely Buffett themed.

The onboard production show — “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show” — was written and produced by Jimmy Buffett. A blue and gold macaw parrot is painted at the front of the ship, along with slogans like “Where it’s always 5 o’clock” and “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.”

Venues onboard include the Port of Indecision Buffett, St. Somewhere Spa and Stars on the Water Theater.

Even the decks have Buffett-inspired names like Changes in Attitude, Flip Flop, License to Chill, and Banana Wind.

Anyone can have a good time on the ship, but Parrotheads might be in heaven.

Margaritaville at Sea Was Formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Starting an entirely new cruise line is a major endeavor. In this case, Margaritaville didn’t start from scratch. Instead, it took over the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line.

Bahamas Paradise ran a similar itinerary but offered two ships before the pandemic impacted business. It was well known for being a heavily discounted cruise line, offering sailings for under $100 per person for the least expensive cabins.

Margaritaville at Sea, which began sailing in May 2022, offers still affordable rates, but is priced somewhat higher. Cruises start at $169 per person.

The Ship Was Recently Transformed to “Paradise”

When still known as Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, the ship was known as Grand Classica. Now the ship has been transformed into Margaritaville at Sea Paradise after a refurbishment.

With 658 staterooms and 14 decks, the older ship wouldn’t be confused for today’s enormous cruise ships, but still has plenty to offer. The refurbishment not only put in place new dining/bar venues on the ship, but also renovated staterooms to follow with the Buffett style that passengers would expect.

Perhaps the biggest and boldest change was the paint job done on the ship’s hull, complete with palm trees, parrots, and an iconic touch of teal accent color that sets the ship apart from anything else sailing.

It’s a Full Cruise Experience

With a two-night cruise sailing on a smaller ship, you might think that Margaritaville could skimp on the cruise experience. After all, how much can you reasonably do in just a couple of nights?

That’s not the case. Everything you’d expect onboard any other cruise ship is also found here. From kid’s clubs to the casino, from the dining room to the buffet, from the spa to production shows… it’s all on Margaritaville at Sea.

Sure, it might not be on the size and scale of what you’ll find on a new mega-ship, but you won’t skimp on the experience even though it’s a short cruise.

Gratuities Run $14.95 Per Person, Per Day and 18% on Drinks

Of course, gratuities are a fact of life on a cruise ship, including Margaritaville.

The cruise line charges $14.95 per person, per night for most cabins. So on a two-night cruise, a couple sailing would pay about $60 in gratuities. Guests staying in one of the suites onboard will see a charge of $19.95 per person, per night.

There is also an 18% service charge on things like bar drinks, specialty dining, and spa services. So a $12 cocktail would actually run you $14.16.

Drink Packages and Wi-Fi Are Available

Want to have a few margaritas onboard? It seems only appropriate.

In that case, the cruise line offers a “Boat Drinks” package. This is the cruise line’s drink package, but it works a little differently than what you might be used to seeing. In this case, for $99 you get 10 coupons to redeem for alcoholic drinks. Essentially it’s getting your beverages for $10 per glass, a discount off the regular price.

If you want to stay connected back home, then you can also order the “Coconut Telegraph” Internet package. This runs $25 per device for the entire cruise, or $12.50 per night.

A number of other package and perks are also available, including priority check-in deals, photo packages, and the “License to Chill” offer that includes just about everything from VIP seating to specialty dining, express check-in and more.

The Booking Age for a Cruise is 18 Years Old (Not 21!)

In the U.S., major cruise lines typically have a 21 year old minimum age for unaccompanied sailings. That’s not the case for Margaritaville at Sea. It offers sailing for those 18 years and older. (If you select one of the Cruise & Stay packages, then the age requirement is 21.)

So if you just graduated high school and want to take a cruise to celebrate, then Margaritaville might be your ticket.

Adults Can Sail Unvaccinated (If Recently Recovered)

At least for now, pretty much every cruise line requires passengers 12 and older to be vaccinated. And in fact, Margaritaville at Sea also requires most people on the ship to be vaccinated. According to the website:

“Guests who are unable or unwilling to show proof of vaccination or proof of recovery documentation, will be denied boarding.”

But if you have recently recovered from the virus, then the rules are relaxed. If you provide a positive test result from an official test that’s between 10 and 90 days before the departure date, then the cruise line will let you sail without further testing or vaccination required.

(Note that these sorts of rules can change, so double check before you sail.)

Bottom Line on Margaritaville at Sea

For anyone that’s a fan of Jimmy Buffett, you have definitely found your cruise line. But you don’t have to be the world’s biggest Parrothead to enjoy what the new line offers. Affordable and quick trips with the full cruise experience give you the opportunity to take a cruise without taking much time off or spending a fortune.

For those people that don’t have to have the biggest and newest on their cruise, but instead enjoy sailing for the atmosphere and the relaxation that comes with being on the ship, it could be ideal.

Just know that there are some definitely unique features of the cruise line that set it apart from anything else out there.

Margaritaville at Sea Becomes Latest Cruise Line to Ease Pre-boarding COVID Testing Requirement

Vaccinated passengers no longer need to take a COVID-19 test ahead of departure.

passport for margaritaville cruise

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at Sea cruise line dropped its pre-boarding testing requirement for vaccinated passengers, the latest major cruise line in the United States to do so.

The new cruise company, which launched in May with its first 658-cabin Margaritaville at Sea Paradise ship, said the decision to drop testing rules is in line with "following the latest CDC guidelines." The cruise line will continue to require most guests to be vaccinated to sail.

"As the state of COVID-19 evolves, we will continue [to] adapt our protocols based on public health advisories," the company noted in its announcement .

Unvaccinated passengers, who are allowed on the company's cruises under certain exceptions, must show proof of a certified negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test taken within one day of embarking on a sailing.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially ended its pandemic-era program for cruise ships , deciding to no longer display the number of COVID-19 cases online months after the agency allowed its Conditional Sail Order to expire .

The CDC currently recommends all travelers are "up to date" with their COVID-19 vaccines before boarding a cruise, "highly" recommends cruise ships require testing within one day of embarkation, and asks cruise lines to "consider" operating with at least 90% of passengers and 95% of crew up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Margaritaville at Sea became the second cruise line to drop testing after Virgin Voyages eliminated its pre-embarkation testing requirement last week. Virgin Voyages also opened up 10% of its cruise capacity to unvaccinated passengers.

Norwegian Cruise Line has also eliminated testing for vaccinated travelers starting Aug. 1, but the policy does not apply to cruises departing ports in the U.S., Canada, or Piraeus, Greece.

Margaritaville at Sea, which finally took its inaugural journey after being forced to postpone in April, features nautical-themed passenger cabins as well as multiple restaurants and bars like the JWB Prime Steakhouse and the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar.

Honest margaritaville at sea cruise review: the 3-day cruise from florida to bahamas.

  • November 22, 2022
  • By Christina Jane

Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville is a well-known hospitality brand, extending its presence around and beyond the United States. In April 2022, Margaritaville launched its Margaritaville At Sea cruise line, allowing guests to sail from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida to Grand Bahama Island.

With booking rates as low as $189/person before taxes and fees, the cruise offers what is, for many, an affordable tropical getaway for a few days.

I hopped on the Margaritaville At Sea cruise in June for a firsthand experience of what the 3-day, 2-night cruise ship offers. This blog post will tell you everything you need to know about the Margaritaville At Sea experience and what you can expect onboard.

Blogger Christina Jane on the main deck of the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise

Table of Contents

Booking A Margaritaville At Sea Cruise

The cruise line’s website provides an easy-to-navigate, great overview of the cruise ship and clear instructions on how to book a cruise. Depending on how many people you’ll be traveling with while booking , you will select the number of staterooms and individuals you want to register for the cruise. You can book a maximum of 4 individuals into one stateroom. You’ll enter the general details (name, birthdate, phone number, and zip code) of each individual, enter your payment card information, and you are all set to sail!

What is the cost of the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise?

The cost of the cruise can be a bit tricky because the advertised price will not be your final total due to a series of taxes, fees, and add-ons throughout the cruise. The starting price will vary depending on what day of the week you choose to sail. Sundays – Wednesdays are $40 cheaper than the usual $229-374 price advertised on Fridays and Saturdays. If you want to save some coins, sailing on a weekday will be your best bet. The cruise line always offers promotions on their website, so prices constantly change.

What is included in the price?

The price paid when booking covers the following:

  • A room on the cruise ship
  • Round-trip ocean transportation
  • Meals at the specified dining facilities onboard
  • Onboard live entertainment
  • Supervised kid programs

A window on a cruise ship showing the ocean.

What is not included in the price?

There are additional costs per person that you will be automatically responsible for by the end of your cruise. These include:

  • Valet parking at the port ($22/day for a total of $44 if sailing for two nights and three days)
  • Fuel charge of $12 per day (total of $24)
  • Gratuities of $14.95 per night (total of $29.90)
  • Grand Bahama Island excursions
  • Dining at specialty restaurants offered onboard
  • Photographs
  • Bar beverages

Add A Package to Your Cruise Option

Margaritaville At Sea cruise offers a variety of packages guests can add to their getaway before sailing or upon arrival at the Port if they haven’t sold out. The three specialty packages give sailors different options like express check-in, dinner at the on-ship steakhouse, wine tasting, and other add-ons that make the vacation even more special.

The cruise line’s drink packages include the following:

  • Unlimited Soda Package | $24.78* (includes souvenir cup)
  • Boat Drinks Packages (10 drinks) | $99* (Retail value $120)
  • No Feathers Non-Alcoholic Package | $89.67*

*Please note, an 18% service charge will be automatically applied to all drink packages, bar purchases, specialty dining, and Spa & Salon tabs.

Preparing to Sail: What Documents to Bring

Required Documentation:

• U.S. Citizens : Passport books or cards are preferred by the cruise line and must be valid for at least six months from the return date of sailing. While passports are strongly encouraged, you can sail to the Bahamas with Margaritaville without one! Non-U.S. citizen passport holders must provide an original or certified U.S. birth certificate with a valid U.S. driver’s license.

A United States of America passport.

• Non-U.S. Citizens : Bring a valid home-country passport and visa, if required. Those who purchase a Cruise & Stay package are required to have a passport and a completed Bahamas Travel Health Visa before sailing.

The Margaritaville At Sea website will have all of the most updated information regarding the required documentation to sail.

COVID Testing Requirements

Vaccinated guests: Must provide a negative test result no more than 3 days before sailing (antigen, PCR or NAAT). Antigen testing is offered at the port for $45 if vaccinated guests can’t get one before boarding the cruise ship.

Unvaccinated guests: Must provide a negative PCR or NAAT test result, taken no less than 2 days prior to sail date, and be tested ($45 antigen) at the port before embarkation. If your embarkation day is on Saturday, you’ll want to get tested on Thursday.

I will say that I had unvaccinated members in my party, and they were not tested upon arrival at the port.

What to Bring on Your Cruise

Here is a list of things to bring on your cruise with Margaritaville At Sea besides your clothes and must-haves:

  • COVID Vaccination Card (if applicable)
  • Passport, Driver’s License, and Birth Certificate
  • COVID Testing Results (electronic versions allowed)
  • Carry-on-sized bag (to avoid taking up so much space in the room)
  • Small bag to bring on your excursion

Staterooms and Suites Available

The Margaritaville At Sea cruise ship has 658 staterooms and three different types of rooms available.

  • The Interior Staterooms (Starting at $189)
  • The Oceanview Staterooms (Starting at $219)
  • The Grad Terrace Suites (Starting at $819)

I opted for the interior stateroom, considered the most basic option of the three. At 176 square feet, the interior stateroom isn’t the largest room but still managed to impress me with the amenities and features offered in a room its size.

Margaritaville At Sea Cruise Sailing Itinerary

Margaritaville At Sea’s 3-day and 2-night cruise to the Grand Bahama Island has a general itinerary it follows:

On the first day of sailing, passengers boarded the cruise ship from the Port of Palm Beach from 1 pm – 4 pm and began sailing to the Bahamas. You are free and, of course, limited to exploring the amenities on the ship before having a good night of rest or a long night of partying on the upper decks with the DJ!

A Margaritaville at Sea cruise itinerary

The ship arrives at Grand Bahama Island, where passengers can offboard the ship to embark on an excursion for a few hours before returning on the ship to head back to the Port of Palm Beach.

You will wake up in Palm Beach, Florida, around 7:00 am, pack up your belongings, and go through customs to enter the United States.

Arriving at the Port of Palm Beach: Embarkation Process

The cruise line will send an address to the port in the confirmation email you should have received. Once you get to the dock, an operator in a gate booth will give you a slip explaining how to navigate to where the cruise ship is in the area.

Instructions on how to find the port for the Margaritaville at Sea ship.

Valet parking is offered, and the rate is $22/day to park your car for the duration of the trip. This is the only parking available, so if you want to save some coins, be sure to get dropped off if you can and picked up on the day of return!

We waited in line with some other passengers to check in and were expedited as staff members had iPads to make the process run quickly. Once inside the port’s building, we went through a monitor/TSA-like system and dropped off our luggage and bags to be placed in front of our doors.

Taking the escalators upstairs to the official check-in counters, where our passports, vaccination cards, and COVID test results were reviewed. You will also be given your room keys (one per person in a suite). During this step, you are asked for a card that will be charged at disembarkation once you have returned back from the Bahamas.

Before boarding the ship, you will pass several booths. You will have the option to book an excursion, a spa service, take a picture, and set your dinner reservations for the night. The representatives at each booth are extremely helpful and will ensure that you understand the details involved in each service.

After the booths, you are instructed to watch a quick 5-minute cruise safety video giving tips and the “dos and don’ts” of cruising.

Is food included in Margaritaville At Sea Cruise?

The Margaritaville At Sea cruise offers a variety of dining options on the ship. The Port of Indecision Buffet and Fin’s Dining are included in the cruise fare, while other options incur additional costs and are considered specialty dining. I’ll list the options below, but I will say I feel that the cruise ship could have had more Bahamian food options.

Port of Indecision Buffet

This casual buffet serves an unlimited variety of foods you can load up on during the specified dining hours. In the morning, the buffet serves almost every American breakfast food you can imagine, and in the afternoon until 5 pm, you can expect to find different lunch foods.

Breakfast plate consisting of french toast, scrambled eggs, and a croissant on the cruise ship.

Fin’s Dining

Fin’s Dining is the only other dining option that is included in the cruise fare and is the cruise line’s main dining room. The vibe in Fin’s is more upscale, and you’ll want to have a nice dinner outfit to match the ambiance. The menu for both of the days can be found online.

Fin's Dining Food Menu

Frank and Lola’s Pizzeria

The authentic Italian pizzeria has made its way onto the Margaritaville At Sea cruise ship and offers guests pizza and salad. Stay and dine in at the sectioned-off restaurant or carry out to your room.

5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill

Located on Deck 10, known as the entertainment deck of the ship, this bar is nothing but high-energy and big smiles. I passed the bar a few times on my way, and the drinks didn’t stop coming!

JWB Prime Steakhouse

The JWB Prime Steakhouse is an upscale restaurant serving fine steak and exquisite menu options on the ship. Passengers dining at this restaurant usually dress up in their finest dinner attire and enjoy all it has to offer.

Margaritaville Coffee Shop

Here you can grab a chai latte or a muffin before heading to your excursion at the coffee shop. To the right of the shop is an array of tasty gelato flavors to choose from for dessert!

Gelato

Additional Charges for Drinks

Please note that glasses of water and juice are offered for free at the Port of Indecision Buffet. At Fin’s Dining, anything besides water is an additional charge at around $2.

Bars and Lounges

Margaritaville At Sea has 5 bars and lounges for passengers to enjoy on their cruise! Sway to the beats of live musicians and DJs that are hosted throughout the days on board in the Oasis Room, or head to the License to Chill Bar for a signature cocktail.

Blogger Christina Jane sitting at the bar on the cruise ship.

Entertainment & Recreation Onboard

Upon embarking on the cruise ship, we were given an itinerary with a detailed list of the time and locations of entertainment activities that would take place on board. The itinerary was very helpful for informing us on where to go for activities and restaurants and was a great touch by the cruise line.

Themed Parties

The crew hosts different themed parties every night once everyone is aboard the ship and you’re headed to the Bahamas and back.

Bingo that is hosted on the ship! You do pay for a bingo card, but they were giving away another cruise when we were on, so it may be worth playing.

Tales from Margaritaville Show

A 45-minute show performed nightly. I honestly found this to be super corny and ended up leaving the show early, but you may have the time of your life! Different musicians and actors offer other musical shows throughout the ship.

The stage of the Margaritaville At Sea performance.

Pools and Jacuzzis

The ship has two pools: one for all ages and one for adults. I was very disappointed with the pools, as they were barely filled with water and did not even go up to our knees. The jacuzzis looked nice but were also preoccupied as only two jacuzzis were on the entire ship. I hope to see improvement in this area, as I feel like it did kill the vibe.

The pool deck at the Margaritaville At Sea cruise

Fitness Center/Gym

Working out is possible while aboard the cruise ship at the on-site fitness center located on one of the upper decks. While the gym is compact, I was pretty impressed with the fitness center’s equipment and recommend bringing workout clothes just in case you’re up for a workout session while on vacation.

Spa & Salon

Book a massage, facial, or hair service to relax and unwind at the spa and salon.

Casino

If you’re up to placing bets and playing some games, stop by the casino and try your hand at Blackjack or Roulette!

What Can I Shop for Onboard?

The ship has plenty of shops to browse or purchase things to take home. From photo shops to duty-free stores, you’ll be met with plenty of options if you’re looking to buy something to take home on your trip.

The storefront of the photography shop on the Margaritaville At Sea cruise ship.

Is WiFi Available on the Margaritaville At Sea ship?

WiFi is available on the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise, but it is at an additional rate of $25 per device for the duration of the cruise. We did purchase WiFi for a few devices and found that it did not work in our stateroom but instead in the hallway directly outside of our room door and around the cruise ship. For this reason, I don’t really recommend purchasing WiFi because it can be a hit or miss. I personally chose to unplug for the trip and did not have WiFi. We did mention that the WiFi was not that great during checkout and received full refunds for both of the devices.

What is there to do for kids on the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise?

Besides the pool, the Margaritaville At Sea cruise has Kid’s Clubs for children up to age 17. There is a group for ages 3-6, 7-12, and a Teen’s Club for ages 13-17. The clubs are free from 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm, but otherwise, are an additional fee that depends on whether or not you pay for one day or both days.

The itinerary of the three clubs can be found here .

Grand Bahama Island Excursions

The Margaritaville At Sea Cruise sails to the Grand Bahama Island on the second day from 8 am – 4 pm, where there are a variety of excursions you can do while on the island for the day. Unfortunately, due to the limited time of the cruise, you can only do one excursion. Here are the excursions offered:

Swimming with the Pigs and Beach Day

Swim with pigs at the beach, then spend the day enjoying the waves.

 Dolphin Close Encounter

A 7 to 10 minute interaction with dolphins and chance to observe wildlife from the bird patio.

 Dolphin Swim

Swim with dolphins for 20 to 25 minutes.

 City Tour + Market Place

Hop on a bus and get taken around the island to local spots and at the end get off the bus for a visit to the marketplace and lunch.

Brewery Tour and Shopping Area + Grand Lucaya Beach

Take a tour of a local brewery then end the day at the beach.

 Snorkeling Adventure

grand lucayan resort day pass  w day pass,  taino beach resort day pass.

Day passes to the resorts include access to the resorts, lazy rvers, pools, jacuszzis, volleyball, watersports, and more.

Swimming with the Pigs Excursion

On the Margaritaville cruise, if you don’t choose to do an excursion once the ship docks at the Grand Bahama island for the day, you will stay on the boat doing nothing or watching music shows. To avoid this, I opted in for the Swimming with Pigs excursion.

Blogger Christina Jane holding a pig in the Bahamas

Every excursion starts early, around 8:00 am – 9:15 am, so you’ll want to ensure you are up bright and early because tickets for excursions are non-refundable! The cruise offers towels (be sure to take at least two of them if you are heading to the beach). You’ll meet in the lounge, grab towels, then be organized into a line to board a bus leading to the excursion.

A Margaritaville At Sea Cruise staff member holding up a sign for swimming with the pigs excursion.

The Bus Ride

The ride to Crystal Beach, where our excursion was being hosted, was about 45 minutes from Freeport Harbor, where the ship docked. On the way to the beach, a tour guide joined our double-decker bus and gave a narrated tour of the island as we drove through. It was very informative. We learned that Hurricane Dorian in 2019 left a lot of the island damaged, and COVID has only made things worse for many businesses, causing them to close. The bus does not go into the city but west along the island’s coast to bring us to the pigs. According to the guide, there are 700 islands in the Bahamas and a population of 55,000. There is also a low crime rate due to everyone knowing each other!

Swimming with the pigs excursions ticket.

The Excursion

Upon arrival at Crystal Beach, everyone was given wristbands, and we had about an hour of laying around, taking pictures, securing our beach chairs, etc., before the excursion began. Organized into four single file lines, the tour operator gave us instructions on how to handle the pigs in the water, how to lure them in our direction with apples, and the overall dos and donts to have the best experience.

The pigs were a lot larger than any of us expected! There had to be about 50 of us from the cruise doing the excursion. It was a great time, but the human-to-pig ratio was a bit much, and it was a “race” to really interact with the pigs before someone else was getting in your way to try to get their interaction. Imagine people screaming, pigs so big they are almost knocking people over, losing your balance, etc. It was crazy at times but a fun experience. I wouldn’t do it again just because of the number of people there, but I’m glad I got it done! Also the experience is more “feeding the pics, than swimming with the pigs.” The pigs are they only ones doing the swimming really, as the rest of us are trying to get their attention with the apples.

Apples on a stick.

The rest of the day was spent on the beach relaxing. There isn’t much to do on the beach besides lay around and play volleyball after the pigs. I recommend bringing a book or something to keep you preoccupied. The only way to leave the beach after the excursion is via taxi, which can be expensive, so you are stuck there for about 5-6 hours. Surprisingly the time went by fast, and it was very relaxing.

Food  of the Excursion

Food is not included in the excursion, but there is a shack on the beach that serves cheeseburgers, nachos, and other snack foods. I ordered a basic cheeseburger, but it was delicious! I was happier with the food from the shack than on the cruise ship.

A burger, fries, with a lemonade in the Bahamas.

Cost  of the Excursion

This excursion was $99 per person. Was the price worth it? No, the excursion was supposed to be for 45 minutes, but I would say we only spent about 20 minutes with the pigs. That would have been a good amount of time if there weren’t so many people competing for their attention all at once!

Onboarding the Ship

The bus took us back to the ship, where we were met with fruit punch and cookies, which I thought was a nice touch. Overall, it was a great day in the Bahamas! I recommend getting an excursion to get the most out of your experience on the ship.

Cruise and Stay Option: Extended Stay in the Bahamas

The cruise and stay option is an opportunity to extend your trip in the Grand Bahama Island. Instead of just one day on the island, you will have 4-6 nights to enjoy an all-inclusive resort. The two resorts to choose from are the Grand Lucayan Resort and Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach . You don’t only get an excursion but get to enjoy the luxuries of the resorts for a few days.

Christina Jane in the Bahamas

Disembarking the Cruise

After the excursion and everyone have boarded the ship, the sailing back to Palm Beach begins, and on the third day, you arrive around 8 am. Shortly after this time, the cruise is supposed to allow guests to begin disembarking the ship, but that is not what happened. Due to an influx of passengers trying to leave the ship immediately upon docking at the port, staff members were blocking off the pathway to the doors, which caused a major delay in leaving by 3 hours.

I went to ask a staff member what the hold-up was, and it was due to customs being backed up. The staff member assured me that there would be an announcement made once passengers could proceed with disembarking the ship, but that announcement never came, so we were sitting in our room waiting until we went to check ourselves.

Your final bill is charged to the card you gave when you were boarding the ship originally, so there is no having to check out with a representative, which helped the process to go by faster.

You do have to go through customs when coming back into the U.S. since you left the country, but besides the long line, that was a breeze.

Margaritaville At Sea

Costs With Added Fees and Purchases

The selling point of the Margaritaville cruise is its low cost in comparison to other cruises. The original cost was $300, but after my excursion, buying some small things around the ship like water bottles and ice cream, my final cost was $454,68. With the way the cruise is set up, you are bound to spend more than your booking fee, so plan accordingly!

Here is my spending breakdown:

  • $300 Booking fee (Keep in mind I was booking with three other individuals)
  • $14.95 x 2 = $29.90 Gratuities charge
  • $12 x 2 = $24 Fuel Charge
  • $99.00 – 10% discount = 89.10 Grand Bahama Island excursion
  • $3.54 Bottles of water
  • $8.14 Ice Cream

As you can see, while the “cheap” price point of the Margaritaville cruise may seem like an affordable cruise line option at face value, the additional costs and onboard cruise expenses you accrue, which we will cover in the rest of this blog post, can make or break whether or not the cruise is worth it or not for you.

passport for margaritaville cruise

Cons of the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise

  • Certain fees like the fuel charge should have been included during booking in my opinion and part of the booking fee. I wasn’t a fan of how fuel and gratuities were added at the end. Other fees were added during booking, so it made no sense to me why others would not be included.
  • Water bottles were sold at $1, which did not break the bank, but I feel that at least 2 bottles/person should have been included in the room.
  • Soda is not included in dining at Fin’s Dining, and I felt like it should have been. Again, it’s only $2, but it feels like this is yet another way for the cruise line to make a quick dollar.
  • The activities on the ship were not that exciting. This was my first cruise, and if I was basing all cruises on this one, I would honestly never return. For the price, a lot of things made sense, but besides live music and bingo, more could have been offered.
  • The pools had very little water.  I covered this earlier in this review, but I have to mention it again because what!?

Final Thoughts on the Cruise

The Margaritaville At Sea Cruise is a great quick getaway if you don’t have the time to embark on a 7-day long vacation, but overall I would not go again. For the price you may end up paying by the end of your cruise, you could have booked one with a major cruise line and gotten a better experience.

Now that you have all of the ins and out of what to expect on the Margaritaville At Sea Cruise, tell me, does this sound like an adventure you’d take? If you’ve been on the cruise already, share with me what you enjoyed and what you think could be improved!

Margaritaville Cruise: Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea

Parrotheads and margarita lovers rejoice! Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett's well-known brand (rest in peace, Jimmy!), is out to sea! Hop onboard a Margaritaville cruise for a quick yet rejuvenating trip to the Bahamas.

The new cruise line is helping answer the question, “Can a song about a lost shaker of salt impact an entire sea-filled ocean?” You bet it can because it's always 5 o'clock onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, their new cruise ship.

Carefree Island Vibe Aboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise

Likened to the Margaritaville brand, the vibe of a Margaritaville cruise will be carefree, breezy, and tropical. Interior common spaces are decorated with bright colors and natural elements, like tropical foliage and nautical rope.

Staterooms are adorned in tan, white, and blue hues. Everywhere has a “leave your worries behind” atmosphere.

The ship's exterior has a famous Jimmy Buffett quote, “Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes…” painted on its side and states this ship is, “Where it's always 5 o'clock.” Now that's something we can toast to!

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sets sail with short getaways from Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island

Head to Florida's Port of Palm Beach to board the 10-deck ship Margaritaville at Sea Paradise. This 2-night, 3-day cruise sails between Palm Beach and Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island.

The Port of Palm Beach is only 20-minutes from the West Palm Beach airport (code PBI) and about an hour from Fort Lauderdale Airport (code FLL). Grand Bahama Island is the northernmost island in the Bahamas and is directly east of Palm Beach, Florida.

Rebrand for Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line to Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea is taking over the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, which has completely rebranded. Their ship, Grand Classica , has been transformed into Margaritaville at Sea Paradise .

Millions of dollars were invested in the exciting refurbishment. Colors, patterns, and textures from the sand, sea, and sky influenced the interior design, which emulates the Margaritaville brand. You'll find parrot motifs, beach scenes, and palm trees not just at your cruise destination but also in the interior choices of common areas and staterooms on the ship.

Ship Upgrades (including Sustainability)

Though the ships may be a few years old and going through a complete renovation, something guests won’t ever see are the fuel tanks onboard. They were scrubbed (literally by hand) so the most low-sulfur emitting fuel could be put into the ships to make them as sustainability-conscious as possible right now.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Dining and Entertainment

Myriad dining, bar, and entertainment options are on board for you to enjoy during your short but significant cruise. There are plenty of places to throw back a few drinks, whether coffee or cocktails, and be entertained.

The names of the common spaces onboard are playful and befitting of a Margaritaville cruise. Gourmet options include:

  • JWB Prime Steak & Seafood (that's James William Buffett for the non-parrotheads out there)
  • Frank and Lola’s Pizzeria (Frank and Lola are the subjects of one of Jimmy Buffett's songs, of the same name)
  • Port of Indecision Buffet
  • LandShark Sports Bar (Landshark is Jimmy Buffett's brand beer, so this is of course appropriately named)
  • Margaritaville Coffee & Pastry Shop
  • Euphoria Lounge
  • 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar

We can only hope to find ourselves on board, sipping an ice-cold drink as we listen to a band play Jimmy Buffett's well-known hits, complete with the tropical sounds of steel drums and guitar strings.

Amenities include several restaurants and dining areas, pools, entertainment programming, retail stores, a St. Somewhere Spa, and Fins Up! Fitness Center.

Tales of Margaritaville, onboard Entertainment Show

Jimmy Buffett and famous producer, Frank Marshall, teamed up to write a brand new show for the ship, called Tales of Margaritaville. Of course, it features hits from his well-known catalog of songs!

Price Point for Margaritaville at Sea

Starting pricing for a Margaritaville at Sea cruise is $169 to $189, per person, depending on the sailing date.

The affordable pricing is partially due to the cruise's short itinerary length (2-nights, 3-days). It's a great option for anyone who wants a quick getaway that disembarks and returns to an easy-to-get-to port.

Variety of Cruise Category Options

There are 658 cabins onboard, with a variety of cabin categories within the ship's 10 decks.

This includes Outside View staterooms with portholes, Interior cabins , and a limited number of Grand Terrace Suites with balconies. (The majority of the ship is either Outside View or Interior cabins.)

Square Footage of All Cabins

The 658 staterooms are broken down as follows, including how large the square footage is of each category:

  • 10 Terrace Suites (505.9 sq. ft.)
  • 2 Junior Suites (333.5 sq. ft.)
  • 430 Ocean View (152 sq. ft.)
  • 216 Inside (148 sq. ft.)

Though details have not been announced, we have confirmed that there is potential for a ship-within-a-ship class onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.

Margaritaville at Sea is fun for all ages

Margaritaville is a very family-friendly brand. Infants 6 months or older, children, and adults will enjoy this cruise. If your family wants to escape with a Margaritaville at Sea vacation, consider booking a group package for your multi-generational traveling experience to paradise.

If you listen to Jimmy Buffett's music, you know if his songs are playing on board they are kid-friendly. The melodies are upbeat, fun, and relaxing. His lyrics are absent of curse words and he even imparts humor in some of his songs that children and adults alike enjoy.

Children’s Programming on Board

A children’s program is being developed. It will likely be based on one of Jimmy Buffet’s children's books .

“Cruise and Stay” (Land/Cruise) opportunities pair Margaritaville at Sea with Resorts

If you find that a 2-night/3-day cruise isn't enough time to relax and soak up the sun, you can extend your stay with Margaritaville at Sea's option to stay a few nights at a resort on Grand Bahama Island.

Extend your Bahamas adventure for four or six nights at one of their participating beachfront properties: Grand Lucayan Bahamas or Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort.

While the program continues to evolve and grow, it will likely take advantage of a golden opportunity that's presented itself with Margaritaville at Sea: the chance to capitalize on Margaritaville's reputable resort properties.

For the moment, you can only book Cruise and Stay packages by calling this number: 855-656-2451

Unique Incentives for Margaritaville at Sea and Ways to Experience Margaritaville at Home

The possibilities for Margaritaveill’s land-based products to be coupled with this new venture to the sea are endless. There has been talk of a beach club, and also rolling out a perks program in conjunction with the resorts.

And don’t forget about the Margaritaville products that you can buy online and in stores. They may eventually be incorporated into this new cruise line at sea!

How extending your vacation on Grand Bahama Island with the Cruise & Stay option works

You will board your Margaritaville at Sea cruise from the Port of Palm Beach on Day 1. Then on Day 2, when it arrives at Grand Bahama Island, you disembark with your luggage. After your stay at the resort on the island, you get back on the ship to sail back to the Port of Palm Beach .

For instance, if you sail on a May 2nd cruise, you would get off the ship in Freeport on May 3rd and you'd be transferred to your hotel in Grand Bahama Island. Then you stay there for 4 nights at one of the two properties.

To return to Florida, you then board the ship again at the port on Grand Bahama Island on May 7th and disembark when it docks back in Florida on May 8th.

Pre-Cruise COVID Testing is Not Required

As of July 23, 2022, Margaritaville at Sea removed its pre-cruise COVID testing requirement for vaccinated guests.

Unvaccinated guests are still required to provide proof of a negative antigen COVID-19 test taken no more than one day before the sailing.

What is the square footage of each room size?

Hi Robert! It is as follows:

658 Staterooms:

10 Terrace Suites (505.9 sq ft.) 2 Junior Suites (333.5 sq ft.) 430 Ocean View (152 sq ft.) 216 Inside (148 sq ft.)

We have added it to the post as well. Cheers!

Do you have pictures of the junior suite?

We do not, Sharon. Sorry about that!

Can you start the cruise from Freeport

Hi Les! You cannot start the cruise in Freeport right now. The only way to get on the ship in Freeport is if you did the land package and stayed there as “part” of the cruise, then get back on the ship to complete the cruise to get back to the Port of Palm Beach. Let me know if that makes sense and answers your question!

When the ship docks in Grand Bahama, is it the island of Freeport. Grand Bahama? Also. Where can you book the cruise?

Hi Linda – You can book the cruise online (margaritavilleatsea.com) and Grand Bahama is the island. Freeport is the city on Grand Bahama Island where the ship is in port.

Where can we book the Margaritaville cruise along with an island stay? Would love to do to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in November of this year!

That sounds like an awesome first wedding anniversary idea and trip, Mallory! For the moment, you can only book the Cruise and Stay packages by calling them at: 855-656-2451. Hope that helps!

What are your Covid policies? Do you need to be vaccinated?

Hi Kelly! We’re cruise writers who write about cruise lines and cruise news. For the most up-to-date COVID policies for any cruise line, we recommend going directly to the cruise’s website. There’s usually a Health & Safety tab option on their menu or a tab with info to prepare for sailing. Here it is for Margaritaville at Sea: https://margaritavilleatsea.com/prepare-to-sail/ Hope that helps!

I’m a Travel Agent trying to get dates of sailing how do I obtain that ?

Hi Regina – you’ll have to contact Margaritaville at Sea directly or check their website.

Does the cruise package include transportation to the marketplace and back? If so what time is it available to guest?

Hi Christina! We aren’t the direct cruise line – please reach out to them directly for precise information regarding transportation for your cruise!

Do we need visa to go to Bahamas if we are not Americans and do children require Covid 19 PCR tests?

We recommend searching for information from the government about where you are traveling to/from for up-to-date information. We cannot advise on such things.

Will my Florida drivers license be ok for ID?

Hi Pamela – It will not. You need a passport because it crosses into other countries.

Good Day, I am interested in your Bahama 3-day cruise. I’m looking at December 31 – Jan 2. My 67th birthday is on January 1st. Please let me know if you can accommodate this time frame.

Hi Zandra – we are writers and not travel agents! It’s best to reach out to the cruise line, directly, or a travel agent for your birthday cruise. Happy birthday in a few months! We hope you enjoy whatever way you celebrate, especially if it’s on a cruise!

What type of clothing is suggested to pack? Formal wear?

The cruise is very casual and informal. Pack for warm weather. Packing one pair of pants and a pair of closed-toed shoes is always safe too.

I am interested in your cruise and stay package with extended dates (a month). How can I book?

Hi Chelsea – we are cruise writers. Please reach out to the cruise line directly to book, linked in our post. Thank you!

Margaritaville at Sea failed a surprise health inspection due to too many people in hot tubs and concerns about food safety

  • CDC officials failed Margaritaville at Sea Paradise on a surprise health inspection.
  • The ship scored 83 points, below the 86 needed to pass, with 65 issues noted.
  • Margaritaville at Sea told BI some issues have been resolved and it's seeking a reinspection.

On May 1, CDC officials boarded Margaritaville at Sea , a Jimmy-Buffet-themed ship that welcomes 1,680 passengers, for an unexpected health inspection.

The Vessel Sanitation Program officials gave the ship a failing grade. During the visit, they noted 65 issues on the ship, which resulted in an 83-point score. A score of 86 is needed to pass.

In the inspection detail report , officials noted food and drink concerns as well as crowded whirlpools.

In a statement sent to Business Insider, representatives for Margaritaville at Sea said, "Following internal policies, immediate corrective actions have been taken to address the issues identified in the inspection."

"Many of these issues have already been resolved and we will be working with USPH for a reinspection as soon as possible. We expect this reinspection will exceed USPH standard," the statement continued.

The report noted concerns about food and drink safety

Across the Paradise ship , there are seven dining venues, six bars, and food and drink areas for the ship's workers.

Within these spaces on Paradise, the officials noted in the inspection report that one worker handled an ice machine with gloves that "were stored with tools," adding that "it was unclear if the crew member washed his hands before putting on gloves."

The report stated that items like heavy cream were not in cold enough environments to meet CDC standards and that a crew member "could not demonstrate competency in verifying the concentration of the chemical used" while washing lettuce.

Additionally, numerous fridges, freezers, and deep fryers were out of service across the ship, areas of decks were soiled and in disrepair, and multiple rooms on the ship also didn't reach the required light intensity of 220 lux, the inspection stated.

Beyond food and drink, the officials noted that whirlpools often had six guests, although they're designed for a maximum of four people.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise isn't the only ship to fail its inspection

In a statement sent to Entrepreneur , the Vessel Sanitation Program officials said, "Inspections usually take 6-8 hours, depending on the number of inspectors, ship size, amount of time the ship is in port, and issues identified during the inspection."

Previously, the MSC Seaside failed with a score of 67, Business Insider reported last spring. During that inspection — the lowest score given in six years — officials found a "crew member's hands and refrigerator door handle covered in hamburger blood" and "black filth residue" on four yogurt containers.

Meanwhile, fifteen ships gained perfect scores in last summer's report . Those ships included Disney Fantasy, Disney Wonder, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Sunshine, Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Millenium, Celebrity Summit, MSC Seascape, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, Oceania Riviera, Rotterdam, Silver Moon, Norwegian Joy, and Norwegian Pearl.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise scored an 87 in the biannual report last year.

In the past two years, multiple Business Insider reporters have boarded the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise ship, and their reviews have been mixed. Reporter Brittany Chang was on the ship's inaugural sailing, where she noticed outdated features and quality issues, deeming a Paradise cruise "not worth it."

Lauren Mack came to a similar conclusion after boarding the ship last summer following the cruise line's multimillion-dollar renovation . During her cruise, she moved staterooms twice due to cigarette smoke smells and felt like the ship lacked a cohesive theme.

"Margaritaville has all the cruise basics, but I think they're scaled back in quantity and quality," Mack said. "If you temper your expectations and want an extended booze cruise or a beach day on a budget, you may find the cruise worthwhile."
