Megadeth announce European summer tour

Thrash icons Megadeth will tour Europe in summer 2023

A picture of Megadeth's Dave Mustaine performing live

Megadeth have announced a run of European tour dates for this coming summer.

The thrash icons will play a number of headline shows around scheduled festival appearances, including a headline slot at Bloodstock Open Air in August.

That same month, they also appear at Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze Fesstival in Germany, Leyendas del Rock Festival in Spain, Dynamo Open Air in the Netherlands and the Riverside Festival in Switzerland.

Before the shows in Europe, Megadeth play two shows in Japan this month and are on the bill for three Knotfest events in Australia. They also currently have two US dates scheduled in the run-up to their European jaunt.

Dave Mustaine and co released their 16th album,  The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! last year.

Metal Hammer said the album "showcases a depth and a compositional brilliance that’s rooted in this line-up’s uncanny ability to reimagine Megadeth’s iconic sound in a fresh and compelling way. All the elements that people love about the band – the scorching riffs, the striking technicality and the brawling, speed metal tempos – are here in spades."

Last month, the band shared the official music video for the song “Killing Time,” taken from the band’s latest studio album , The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! Titled ‘Chapter V: Killing Time, the video is the fifth and latest instalment of the band’s epic multi-part short film revealing the origins of the band’s iconic mascot Vic Rattlehead.

Best nine inch nails songs: essential trent reznor tracks, ‘master of puppets’: an album of firsts and lasts for metallica.

Regarding the lyrical inspiration for “Killing Time”, Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine told Kerrang! “‘Killing Time’ isn’t about homicide. It’s about procrastination. “Psychopathy” [another song from The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! ] gives you the background] for the person that “Killing Time” is about. The subject the doctors are talking about is this guy who thinks he’s got it all going on. But everything that he does peels back another layer of burnt skin. It’s stripping back the paint trying to cover up the mess that this person is. I actually know someone who’s just lost everything. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of dollars and a multi-million dollar company: gone. And he’d been warned. He was the slick dude in “Life In Hell.” He was the Junkie. He’s definitely the guy in “Killing Time.”

Megadeth (formed in the mid-1980s) is a pioneering group of the American thrash metal music genre, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Formerly the lead guitarist of highly revered metal band Metallica, Dave Mustaine formed Megadeth alongside bassist David Ellefson in 1983. Alongside Anthrax, Metallica and Slayer, Megadeth is credited as being one of the driving forces of thrash metal music over the ‘80s and ‘90s, dropping the progressive rock influences common and instead emphasizing the skills of its instrumentalists.

In the early years, Megadeth’s line-up changed regularly. In 1984, it replaced Lee Rausch with jazz fusion drummer Gar Samuelson and guitarist Chris Poland. The band’s debut album, Killing Is My Business… and Business is Good!, released through Combat Records in 1985, attracted major label interest and became popular in both underground and mainstream metal circles.

After signing with Capitol Records, Megadeth released its major-label debut Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? in 1986, which eventually went platinum, followed by So Far, So Good… So What! in 1988.

Around that time, Mustaine’s behavior became erratic, leading him to enter rehab and the band to partially break up. After hiring guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza. Megadeth’s fourth studio album Rust in Peace, signaled the group’s return.

In the hope of appealing to the same mainstream audience Metallica did, Megadeth stripped back their sound on Countdown to Extinction in 1992, but lost none of the technical proficiency fans had come to expect. The album was certified double platinum and resulted in Megadeth becoming one of the biggest bands in the world.

Megadeth’s sixth full-length album Youthanasia in 1994 followed the same mainstream trend as its predecessor, and was succeeded by a rare collection of unheard recordings titled Hidden Treasures. The band subsequently released Cryptic Writings in 1997, Risk in 1998 with former Suicidal Tendencies drummer Jimmy DeGrasso, and The World Needs a Hero in 2001.

In 2002 Mustaine relapsed on his drug addiction after receiving pain medication following the removal of a kidney stone. He subsequently suffered nerve damage to his left arm, which left the guitarist unable to use his left arm. After temporarily disbanding Megadeth, Mustaine underwent a great deal of physical and mental therapy before releasing the compilation album Still Alive… and Well?.

The band reformed in 2004, and has since released The System Has Failed (2004), United Abominations (2007), Endgame (2009), Thirteen (2011) and Super Collider (2013). Megadeth has sold over 50 million records worldwide, earned platinum certification for six of their fourteen studio albums. The band has been nominated for 12 Grammy awards, and won its first Grammy for the song “Dystopia” in 2017 for Best Metal Performance.

Due to COVID-19, Megadeth’s tour, The Metal Tour of the Year with Lamb of God, Trivium, and In Flames, was postponed from the summer of 2020 to 2021, with Hatebreed replacing In Flames due to visa complications.

In early 2021, Megadeth announced the upcoming release of its next studio album during a Masterclass Zoom video. Leading up to the album’s release, the song “The Dogs of Chernobyl” dropped and drummed up a lot of fan anticipation. However, before The Sick, the Dying...and the Dead! was officially released, sexually explicit videos of Ellefson surfaced online. He was subsequently dismissed from the band and formally replaced by James LoMenzo.

To create buzz around the replacement, the band released a photo showing the neck of the bass guitar and the new band member without revealing his identity.

Over the course of its 39-year career, Megadeth has had numerous guitarists, drummers, and bassists. Mustaine has the distinction of being the only original band member still in the group. Following the dismissal of Ellefson, the band’s current lineup includes Mustaine, drummer Dirk Verbeuren, guitarist Kiko Loureiro, and bassist James LoMenzo.

To promote the album, the band is currently on tour again. The current tour, The Killing Road, stretches across the globe, hitting several major cities. It will continue through late 2023, so keep an eye on the band’s official website for timely updates on Megadeth tour dates, tickets, and cool fan perks.

The band boasts a dedicated fanbase. In return, Megadeth offers some fantastic fan merchandise and benefits. For the current tour, there are VIP packages available for the die-hard fans out there.

The Exclusive Viewing Area Experience includes a premium reserved ticket or a general admission pit ticket — plus, VIP early access to the venue, a photo with the band, a commemorative VIP laminate, and more. The Q&A Experience includes a premium reserved ticket or a general admission pit ticket — plus, a special Q&A session with the band, exclusive VIP merchandise, and a collectible Megadeth poster. These VIP packages have limited availability, so be sure to purchase early.

Membership is open for true Megadeth fans to join the Cyber Army Fan Club. There are multiple levels of membership, including a free tier. The top membership tier, the premium level, comes with loads of perks and exclusive access to members-only contests, giveaways, and prizes.

Megadeth creates tons of fan merchandise. For beer lovers, the band even has its own beer line, which includes two tasty selections: Unibroue Megadeth A Tout Le Monde and Unibroue Megadeth Saison 13. Purchase the gift set, which also comes with a Megadeth-branded pint glass, to try them both.

The band has its own mascot named Vic Rattlehead. The mascot regularly appears on stage with the group during performances and on tours. He is also featured on album cover artwork and promotional materials.

Megadeth hosted its own music festival, dubbed Gigantour, in July 2005 and numerous times since then. The group also had a MegaCruise in October 2019.

Live reviews

Dave Mustaine is consistently one of the most intriguing rock stars in metal. Whether you agree with him 100% of the time or not... it's indisputable that his presence is a marvel to behold. One thing's for certain, from the moment the intro tape stops to the closing notes of "Holy Wars" - a Megadeth show is going to batter you with a high energy, virtuosic, anthem laden roller coster.

Of the many times I've been lucky enough to see Megadeth, I've never seen them deliver a show as impactful as their 2007 Download Festival appearance. Mustaine & co excel when they have a point to prove, they absolutely wanted to make sure they were the band of the weekend... and breezed through to achieve this.

It's been a long held desire of mine to see Megadeth in Buenos Aires, Argentina... Dave Mustaine's favourite place to play. Hearing the South American football crowd like atmosphere on their 'That One Night' DVD is infectious and perfectly demonstrates the magnetic connection a Megadeth devotee can have to their rich catalogue. From their pioneering thrash metal, through to their intelligent hard rock music, Megadeth have the ability to pace a show perfectly and you're in for a treat when you make the very wise decision to buy a ticket.

For me, Havok was the highlight of the night, but do not think that means that the night was any kind of disappointment. Rather, I just think that the half-hour set from Havok was that killer. Havok for me is the Megadeth of the modern era with improvements. Lyrically, they bring a much more thought-provoking game to the table that Megadeth has ever done, and musically Havok is definitively more "thrash." I am not much of a fan of Children of Bodom, and Suicidal Tendencies dropped Houston among other cities from their end of the tour. That meant that, for me, Megadeth was the only one that had the power to really step it up, if anyone. Truthfully, it seemed like they spent too much effort to include songs for which they made videos. I would have been happier with more songs from the newest CD mixed with fewer oldies-but-goodies. I will close by just noting, however, that the newest lineup of members is really good though. Dave's voice was a little weak at times, but the instrument play even through some of the most intense solo parts was nearly flawless whether it was Dave or Kiko. Overall thoughts: Great concert! Havok 5/5; Children of Bodom NR; Suicidal Tendencies NR; Megadeth 4/5.

After driving 90 miles from my home, I arrived at the Sands arena . Vehicles were traveling the wrong way at the entrance. We were rerouted to Casino parking. Cars and suv's were bumper to bumper, honking horns. I almost got t-boned 4 times, rear ended twice and narrowly avoided a head-on collision several times. We went around the 5-level parking garage for over an hour and a half inhaling carbon monoxide. The only thing I got was a headache. No where to park. I got disgusted and drove another 90 miles home. I did not get to see the show. I am hurt, angry and disappointed. I am only grateful for the times I saw Megadeth years ago. The venues suck any more and fans are treated like garbage. My ticket for Megadeth was bought as my birthday present from my significant other from Ticket Master. He also ordered me a Megadeth t-shirt and the Dystopia CD. The shirt and CD NEVER ARRIVED. Tickets to a show we never got to see. A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. NEVER AGAIN. Thanks for nothing.

Megadeth, the American thrash metal band have been recording and touring consistently since their formation in 1983 minus a brief hiatus in the mid 00's. Dave Mustaine and co are known for having one of the most energetic and technical live shows on the circuit and whether you like the frontman or not, you cannot deny his talents as a showman.

Constant interaction with his crowd keeps the show feeling like a unitary experience as everyone is encouraged to sing, clap and mosh along with the rockers onstage. Having only achieved a handful of hits in the UK, Dave's skill is making the audience cheer as loudly for every track picked for the setlist.

Megadeth are an impressive live band as every member endeavours to get the best possible sound out of their instrument and they demonstrate this on extended versions of cult hits such as 'System Of Destruction'. Their dedication to the metal sound is a clue that Megadeth are likely to still be touring thirty years for now should they all be able.

So sick! Havok killed it. Children of Bodom killed it. Suicidal Tendencies killed it. Megadeth killed it. Spent pretty much the entire show getting rocked in the pit, despite breaking my finger at the beginning of the second act. It was pretty awesome to be about 10 feet away from a shredding Dave Mustaine. I'm really glad I attended this show, I definitely would have regretted it if I hadn't.

My last experience at the Warfield was terrible, but it was dub step and our seats were on the balcony. Two things that I can't stand, dub step and not being able to enjoy the pit.

General admission floor tickets for Megadeth definitely changed my mind about the Warfield. I think I just might come back in the near future.

I had a awesome time at the Megadeth concert at Casino Rama! What an amazing show! Dave Mustaine was so interactive with the crowd, pointing out someone in the front row floors sleeping. Maybe on something he would have wanted in the eighties. The sound is amazing in there too! My ears were ringing for hours afterwords. The band has great stage presents even in between songs watching the video screen with the clips and jokes MEGADETH is Awesome! At the very end of the night a guy even jumped on stage Dave shook his hand took a bow with him in front of the crowd. Also threw out every pic, drum stick, wrist bands & song list to the sleeping girl!

AMAZING!!! I had the best time, I just wish I had the money to meet the band. I did get to meet the Drummer from the first band. He was bad ass! Really nice, I just can read their name.

This was the 3rd time seeing Megadeth, second time at the Revention Center. Awsome venue and just the right size. Thankful I was able to get to the front and your security was awesome. They bring you fresh water!

Amazing night!!

Arrived around 7,parking was non existent . Got inside and saw all of Children of Bodom. Excellent musically but vocals were a bit harsh. Suicidal tendencies were solid. Megadeth were excellent yet had issues with the vocals getting washed out by high volume of the instruments. I would have put up with lower volume in order to hear the vocals clearly. Otherwise a great show.

What can I say...I was at a sold out 1,600 person venue with Megadeth literally feet away from me. It was more than awesome. The guitar playing was amazing (from lead, rhythm and bass) and drummer did a solid job. Ellefson was really into it (considering he grew up near here) and Mustaine sounded great and seemed to enjoy it. Highly recommend for anyone with remote interest.

An awesome show that reminded me of the reasons why I love Megadeth. My son was so happy that I took him along too, he said it was the best experience ever and that he now understood what it was like to at 80’s metal music gig. We both can’t wait to see them again. Hope they do their own tour soon.

Taylor swift's surprise songs from night 2 of her stockholm eras tour show, including a triple mashup for the 89th performance, share this article.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour continued its international journey on Saturday night in Sweden (afternoon in the United States) with the second of three shows in Stockholm. The now 14-time Grammy winner will be touring almost non-stop for the entire year, and at each show she adds two “surprise songs” to her 44-song, three hour plus set list.

For the second night in Stockholm, Swift played “Guilty As Sin?” from her new album The Tortured Poets Department on guitar. On piano, Swift went with a triple mashup, picking three songs — “Say Don’t Go,” “Welcome to New York” and “Clean” — off of her 1989 (Taylor’s Version) album in honor of her 89th Eras Tour performance.

Next up, Swift has one more show in Stockholm before heading to Lisbon.

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

megadeth eu tour

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

4. Stockholm, Sweden — total average cost: $935, safety score: 53.86

3. Hamburg, Germany — total average cost: $903, safety score: 57.51

2. Gelsenkirchen, Germany — total average cost: $749, safety score: 51.33

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

Taylor Swift's European Eras Tour leg kicked off in Paris with a new setlist. See which songs are in and out.

May 9, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Taylor Swift fever struck Paris on Thursday as the highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe, with fans treated to the first-ever performance of songs from her latest album.

The Eras Tour began its European leg with four dates at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

"I wish I could have toured Europe more. This is a dream crowd," the 34-year-old megastar told the ecstatic audience.

There were deafening shrieks as images of typewriter sheets indicated that songs off the new album "The Tortured Poets Department" were starting late in the show.

Emerging in a lyrics-covered dress, she ran through several of the darker new tracks starting with "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Fortnight", a particularly furious rendition of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" and an elaborate "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart," with a golden-era Hollywood dance routine.

Other "The Tortured Poets Department" songs performed included "So High School," "Down Bad" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," according to ETonline .

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Paris, France

"You were the first crowd to see songs from 'The Tortured Poets Department'," she said, before adding: "Or, as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: the Musical.'"

That was a dream come true for many in the audience.

"I've been so excited for so long, I can't believe it's actually happening," said 11-year-old Emma, who had flown in with her mother from New York.

Adding songs from "The Tortured Poets Department" wasn't the only change to the show and its 45-song setlist.

Perhaps the biggest change, according to ETonline, is the "Folklore" and "Evermore" setlists were combined, cutting four songs across the two albums: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," Swift said, according to video posted to social media. "You can call it "Folklore, Evermore" or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."

"The Archer" was removed from the "Lovers" portion of the show and "Long Live" was cut from the "Speak Now" era setlist, according to ETonline.

One of the secret songs was, fittingly, the "Midnights" bonus track "Paris."

Parts of the show were also rearranged to make room for the newest era. The "Red" era was moved from the fifth to the third slot, according to ETonline, and the newest album was introduced following the "1989" set.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Paris, France

The venue said a fifth of the crowd were from the United States — many attracted by Europe's rules against charging huge mark-ups on resale tickets that can save Americans thousands of dollars compared with shows at home.

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the Paris show. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift," she told AFP.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday in Paris to ensure they got a prime spot.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts — he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

FRANCE-MUSIC-AUDIENCE-TAYLOR-SWIFT

After wrapping up her run in Paris, Swift will head for dates in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland and Austria.

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swift's popularity shows no sign of dimming — the new album sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record , reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been poring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment. "I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences."

Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari joined MEGADETH last September after the band's longtime axeman Kiko Loureiro , announced earlier that month that he would sit out the next leg of MEGADETH 's "Crush The World" tour in order to stay home with his children back in Finland. It was later revealed that Mäntysaari would continue to play guitar for MEGADETH for the foreseeable future, with Loureiro seemingly having no plans to return.

The 37-year-old Mäntysaari was born in Tampere, Finland and began playing guitar at the age of 12. In 2004, he joined the band WINTERSUN . He has also been a member of SMACKBOUND since 2015.

MEGADETH played its first concert with Mäntysaari on September 6, 2023 at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Loureiro officially joined MEGADETH in April 2015, about five months after Chris Broderick 's exit from the group.

Since its inception in 1983, MEGADETH has ascended from its raw thrash metal roots to become an unstoppable force in the heavy metal world. With founder Dave Mustaine at the helm, MEGADETH 's journey has been marked by a penchant for pushing the boundaries of speed, technicality, and complexity in their music. Their groundbreaking album "Rust In Peace" , released in 1990, is frequently cited as a seminal work in the thrash metal genre. Along with the critically acclaimed "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" , it cemented MEGADETH 's place in the annals of metal history.

Over four decades, the band's discography has earned numerous certifications, including platinum and multi-platinum awards, with albums like "Countdown To Extinction" and "Youthanasia" achieving widespread critical acclaim. 2016's "Dystopia" not only marked a high point with their first Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" after twelve nominations but also set the stage for their latest triumph, "The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!" in 2022. MEGADETH 's status as part of the "Big Four" of thrash metal underscores their trailblazing role in the genre, laying the groundwork for countless bands and musicians who have followed in their wake.

The outing includes a planned stop at the troubled Co-Op Live in Manchester, England, which has been beset by a series of false starts and technical issues during what was slated to be its opening month. On May 2, the venue said it was taking a “short pause” in events to “fully ensure the safety and security of fans and artists visiting the venue”

Fans are following Taylor Swift to Europe after finding Eras Tour tickets less costly there

Thousands of Taylor Swift fans are following her across the pond after missing out on her U.S. concert tour last year or being put off by marked-up ticket prices.

Taylor Swift fans drinking at The Black Dog in Vauxhall, south London, said they were there thanks to the track “The Black Dog,” in which the singer describes monitoring an unnamed ex’s visit “into some bar called The Black Dog,” through location share on her phone.

LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her U.S. concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

The pop star is scheduled to kick off the 18-city Europe leg of her record-setting Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, and planeloads of Swifties plan to follow Miss Americana across the pond in the coming weeks. The arena where Swift is appearing said Americans bought 20% of the tickets for her four sold-out shows. Stockholm, the tour’s next stop, expects about 10,000 concertgoers from the U.S.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+. Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé's Renaissance world tour .

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home .

“They said, ’Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,” Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert, said.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz beams while holding up the so-called Taylor Swift bill he signed into law as lawmakers, First Avenue employees and online ticket buyers clap Tuesday, May 7, 2024, inside the First Avenue concert venue in Minneapolis. The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift's 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket for live events held in Minnesota, among other measures. That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the U.S. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

AP AUDIO: Fans are following Taylor Swift to Europe after finding Eras Tour tickets less costly there

AP correspondent Jennifer King reports Taylor Swift is heading to Europe, and her U.S. fans are following.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

The three VIP tickets she secured close to the stage — “I would call it brute-force dumb luck” — cost 600 euros ($646) each. Swift subsequently announced six November tour dates in Toronto, within driving distance of Warren’s home. “Absolute nose-bleed seats” already are going for 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194) on secondary resale sites like Viagogo, Warren said.

TOUR TOURISM: IS IT REALLY A THING?

Hard-core fans trailing their favorite singer or band on tour is not a new phenomenon. “Groupie” emerged in the late 1960s as a somewhat derogatory word for the ardent followers of rock bands. Deadheads took to the road in the 1970s to pursue the Grateful Dead from city to city.

More recently, music festivals like California’s Coachella and England’s Glastonbury, and concert residencies in Las Vegas by the likes of Elton John, Lady Gaga and Adele, have attracted travelers to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit, Fish noted.

Travel and entertainment analysts have also spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) radius of concert venues in the U.S. cities she visited in 2023. The U.S. dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in L.A. last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland, too. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” said Hale, who is pregnant with her first child.

FOR STOCKHOLM, 120,000 SWIFTIES CAN’T BE WRONG

The local economic impact of what the zeitgeist has termed “Swiftonomics” and the “Swift lift” can be considerable . It’s no wonder the exclusive arrangement Singapore’s government made with Swift to make the city-state her only tour stop in Southeast Asia earlier this year aroused regional jealousy .

No European governments have complained of their countries not being among the dozen selected for the Europe leg of the Eras Tour, although some fans have expressed surprise that Gelsenkirchen, a city with a population of about 264,000 is one of the three cities in Germany that made the cut.

Airbnb reported Tuesday that searches on its platform for the U.K. cities where Swift is performing in June and August — Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London — increased an average of 337% when tickets went on sale last summer.

Not to be outdone when it comes to trend-spotting, the property rentals company cited the demand as an example of “passion tourism,” or travel “driven by concerts, sports and other cultural events.”

In Stockholm , 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries -- among them 10,000 from the U.S. — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

“So this is going to be huge for the tourism sector in Sweden and Stockholm in particular,” Bergqvist said.

Nightclubs, restaurants and bars are seizing the opportunity to cater to fans with Taylor Swift-themed events, such as karaoke, quizzes and after-concert dance parties.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, saw Swift more than a year ago when the Eras Tour came to the Texas city. Now she’s making more friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3 1/2-hour show in Stockholm. The idea of seeing Swift in Europe was her friend’s, and Matlock needed some persuading at first.

“I was like, ‘I only want to go if it’s a country I haven’t been to. I’ve seen Taylor Swift,’” she said.

Visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg is on their itinerary. The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

WILL TOUR TOURISM ENDURE AFTER ERAS?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and Beyoncé's, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

“It may just shift it a little bit. A person was going to go to the Caribbean for a week vacation. Instead that person (says), ‘Let’s travel to the Taylor Swift thing,’” Fogel said. “It doesn’t increase it. It just moves it from here to there.”

AP journalists Colleen Barry in Milan, Chisato Tanaka in Stockholm, Anne D’Innocenzio in New York, David Koenig in Dallas, Thomas Adamson in Paris and Brian Melley in London contributed reporting.
