Los Angeles Travel Guide — 3-Day Itineraries for Hollywood fans, Thrill-Seekers, and Avid Sightseers

los angeles travel youtube

Los Angeles has loads to keep you entertained! Besides Hollywood, the city has many famous beaches and thrilling theme parks to boot. Our three-day Los Angeles Travel Guide suggests three ways to explore the city, and 21 things to see-do-eat too!

There’s something about Los Angeles (LA) that sparks excitement. It’s glitzy, it’s glamourous… it’s Entertainment Capital of the World for good reason! So despite the severe jet lag, I was wildly excited when I stumbled off the plane, feverishly fantasising: Will I meet a celebrity? Will I get discovered by Hollywood?  Will I become famous?

Scenic Shot of Hollywood Sign - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

The short answer is no. None of those dreams came true. Yet, I wasn’t too disappointed. I found myself too busy enjoying LA’s attractions to chase after stardom. After all, LA is packed with many sun-kissed beaches, fascinating museums, and (of course!) the star-studded Hollywood industry.

But with so much to see in LA, it can get daunting when you have limited time. To help you out, o ur Los Angeles Travel Guide provides three sample itineraries based on your interests. We’ve  also included 21 things to eat, see and do so you’d never get bored in LA!

Pre-trip Essentials

The GO LA Card can only be used from 9:30AM – 5:30PM, but you can stay at the attraction past that timing. All you need to do is scan the card on your phone, and you’re in!

3-Day Los Angeles Itineraries

The GO LA Card includes entry to a diverse range of attractions from theme parks to museums, and guided tours around film studios or celebrity homes. 9) Cruise Around in San Pedro

Watching Wild Dolphins at San Pedro - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

When you tire of the city, sail out to open waters! The LA Waterfront Cruises offers enjoyable daily harbour cruises, and whale watching tours (weekends only).

We went on the whale watching tour, hoping to spot migrating grey whales. Although we didn’t manage to see any, we had a great time watching many playful dolphins porpoising near our boat.

We recommend calling ahead to make a reservation as walk-ins are based on availability.

Cost: From US$30 (~S$40.60,  free with GO LA Card) Cruise Timings: Harbour cruis e varies ; Whale watching tour operates at 10AM, 12:30PM, and 3PM How to get there: Take the Metro Silver Line to Beacon/1st station, then walk 1.1km to the ticketing office.

Holding an Oscar Trophy at Warner Bros Studio Tour - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

You wouldn’t really know how heavy an Oscar is (3.8kg!) until you hold it.

One of my personal favourites from this Los Angeles Travel Guide; This is a must-do for anyone enamoured with Hollywood!

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour  brings you behind the silver screen to discover over 90 years of movie magic. Wicked highlights include touring working sets and soundstages, learning interesting facts about the Hollywood industry, and even holding a real Oscar trophy!

Cost: US$69 (~S$93.40, free with GO LA Card) Tour Timings: 12PM or 2PM ( call in advance to make reservations) How to get there:  Take the Metro Red Line to Hollywood/Highland station, then take bus 222.

11) Madame Tussauds Hollywood

Posing with Charlie Chaplin at Madame Tussauds Hollywood - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

Clowning around like Charlie Chaplin is a specialty of ours.

If you’re determined to meet celebrities, Madame Tussauds is the next best (legal) option. You can take fun photos with numerous wax figures of celebrities and musicians from different eras like Charlie Chaplin, Elvis Presley and Lady Gaga.

12) Hike to the Hollywood Sign

Couple Taking Photos at Hollywood Sign - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

It’s easy to admire the iconic Hollywood Sign from afar, but hiking to it is a whole new experience that you won’t forget or regret! Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be rewarded with an vast, sweeping view of LA — well-worth the time and effort.

There are three routes of varying difficulties to the sign. For us, we went on the shortest but hardest route: the  Wonder View Trail . It was a challenging uphill hike, but doable with  the right gear.

13) Universal Studios Hollywood

Posing with Minion and Gru at Universal Studios Hollywood - 3-day Los Angeles Travel Guide

A magical must-do for movie fans and theme park lovers alike! Universal Studios Hollywood dunks you into the worlds of Harry Potter and Despicable Me (to name a few), where you can pick out your wands or dance with Minions. 14) Pacific Park

Pacific Park on Santa Monica Pier - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

Located on Santa Monica pier, the carnival-like Pacific Park offers many gripping rides and game booths that will thrill all ages. While we recommend getting an unlimited ride wristband as it’s much more worthwhile than buying individual ride tickets. Go forth and ride on!

Do note that some rides may be closed during low season (Nov – Feb).

Cost: US$32.95 (~S$44.60,  free with GO LA Card) Opening Hours:   Varies How to get there:  Take the Metro Expo Line to Downtown Santa Monica station, then walk 800m.

Places to Eat in LA

15) hard rock cafe.

Hard Rock Cafe Atomic Burger - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

You don’t have to be a rock ‘n roll fan to enjoy classic American grub at Hard Rock Cafe ! We got a meal voucher that includes the full deal: A burger/sandwich, drink, dessert as well as tips and gratuities. Big eaters can go for the Atomic Burger and Guinness Cheeseburger, both of which were incredibly juicy, tender, and huge.

Cost: ~S$44 Opening Hours: 11AM – 11PM, closes 12AM on Fri and Sat How to get there:  Take the Metro Red Line to Hollywood/Highland station, then walk 140m.

16) Grand Central Market

Salvadoran Pupusas at Grand Central Market - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

A historical landmark in Downtown LA, the Grand Central Market parallels an exciting buffet that will leave you spoilt for choice with its wide variety of international cuisines. We recommend having Salvadoran pupusas, a thick tortilla stuffed with delicious toppings like beans and cheese (US$3.65, ~S$5) — something you’d hardly find in Singapore!

Opening Hours: 8AM – 10PM How to get there: Take the Metro to Pershing Square station, then walk 100m.

17) San Pedro Fish Market

Eating Shrimp Tray at San Pedro Fish Market - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

The San Pedro Fish Market is well-known for its world-famous shrimp tray (starts from US$39, ~S$53). No lies here — it’s a literal tray stacked with freshly-cooked shrimps and vegetables in butter and herbs. If that isn’t enough, you can add a huge slab of garlic bread to soak up the leftover sauces.

Opening Hours: 8AM – 8PM How to get there:  Take the Metro Silver Line to Beacon/1st station, then walk 1.3km.

18) In-N-Out Burgers

Eating Dinner at In-N-Out Burgers - SF to LA Road Trip Itinerary

When in California, you’ve just got to eat at In-N-Out Burgers . It’s quinteseential in this Los Angeles travel guide! This Californian fast food chain is renowned for its inexpensive burgers, and animal-style sauce (a savoury concoction of secret sauce, cheese, onions and grilled pickles). If you’re feeling adventurous, order the interesting stuff from their not-so-secret menu !

Cost: From US$2.10 (~S$2.85) Opening Hours: 10:30AM – 1AM, closes 1:30AM on Fri and Sat How to get there: Take the Metro Red Line to Hollywood/Highland station, then walk 650m (and other locations ).

19) La Isla Bonita

Eating Tostadas from La Isla Bonita Taco Truck - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

Nearby Venice Beach sits La Isla Bonita , a famous taco truck that serves cheap eats like tacos and burritos. Their ceviche tostadas (US$3, ~S$4.10) is said to be the best in LA, and was refreshingly delicious on a warm day. You probably won’t catch Madonna flamenco dancing here, though.

Cost: US$2 – US$8 (~S$2.70 – ~S$10.90) Opening Hours: 11:30AM – 6PM, closed on Thu How to get there:  Take bus 33 from Spring/7th bus stop in Downtown LA to Main NB & Sunset FS bus stop, then walk 500m.

20) Bruxie

Eating Fried Chicken Waffle from Bruxies - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

Nothing screams soul food louder than some good ol’ fried chicken and waffles! Bruxie  serves up a crispy Original Chicken Waffle Sandwich (US$10.50, ~S$14.30) that’s both heavenly and sinful.

Cost: US$8.45 – US$21.95 (~S$11.50 – ~S$29.80) Opening Hours: 10AM – 9PM (Mon – Thu), 10AM – 10PM (Fri – Sat), 9AM – 9PM (Sun) How to get there: Take the Metro Expo Line to Downtown Santa Monica station, then walk 650m.

21) Dirt Dog

Eating Hot Dogs and Fries at Dirt Dog - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

Imagine a jacked-up version of the American hot dog — that’s what Dirt Dog dishes out! The small eatery turns the simple street fare into a flavourful medley of soft breads, freshly-grilled sausages, and generous toppings like fries and chili.

Cost: From US$6.50 – US$8.50 (~S$8.80 – ~S$11.50) Opening Hours: 10:30AM – 10PM, closes 11PM from Thu – Sat How to get there: Take the Metro Expo Line to LATTC/Ortho Institute station, then walk 320m.

The Best Way to Experience Los Angeles

Watching the Sunset Behind Pacific Park - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

LA is packed with gorgeous scenery and riveting adventures like Universal Studios Hollywood and OUE Skyspace. However, you don’t need to blow a hole in your wallet to experience the glitz and glamour of the city. We got a  GO LA Card , which included access to many of LA’s attractions, and visited eight attractions in three days. Compared to paying at the gate, we saved a total of ~US$40 with this card.

Scanning LA GO Pass on Phone - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

We got even more bang for our buck when we purchased our cards via Klook , which saved us an extra ~10%! On top of the huge discounts the card already has, it’s pretty worthwhile if you ask us.

The GO LA Card helped us save time as it allowed priority access to some attractions. We skipped queues and headed straight into the attraction after scanning the cards on our phones. The card also offers users flexibility like open-dated theme park tickets — perfect for those who want some spunk and spontaneity on their trip!

Do note that some attractions like the Warner Bros. Studio Tour require prior reservation, so we recommend booking these activities in advance. In the meantime, you can visit other attractions that don’t require them.

Overhead Drone Shot in Santa Monica Beach - 3-Day Los Angeles Travel Guide

As we packed up and readied to leave LA for our road trip to San Francisco , I felt a twinge of sadness. Not only were we leaving one of the world’s most prominent cities that gave us such fond memories, I was leaving without being discovered by Hollywood and becoming famous. 😢 I’ll just have to continue writing for The Travel Intern instead of signing autographs (I’m kidding, please don’t fire me).

We hope our travel guide is helpful in planning your LA trip. Maybe your luck will be better than mine, and you’ll spot a celebrity or two!

When Is The Best Time To Visit?

Los Angeles is a city that embraces its sun-soaked reputation year-round, but the best time to visit often falls between late spring and early fall. The weather is pleasantly warm from April to October, making it ideal for exploring the city’s diverse neighborhoods, hitting the beaches, and enjoying outdoor activities. During this period, the mild temperatures and clear skies create the perfect backdrop for its famous attractions like the Hollywood Sign, Santa Monica Pier, and Griffith Observatory. Remember that popular tourist spots might be busier during the summer months, but don’t let that deter you – LA’s laid-back vibe and countless attractions ensure that every season offers a unique and memorable experience.

Airport Details

When choosing an airport to fly to, I recommend going to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It is a central hub with a wide array of flight options and offers that quintessential Californian vibe right from the moment you land. *queue singing Miley Cyrus Party in the USA* The airport is in the city, and you will not have to travel far to reach your next destination. They have a shuttle to drop everyone off at the ride-sharing location (including taxis). It is straightforward to follow!

If you’re flying in style with the Amex Platinum credit card, get ready to elevate your airport experience. LAX boasts fantastic lounges to kick back and relax before your flight. With the Amex Platinum card (depending on the terminal you are leaving), you can access the luxurious Centurion Lounge, known for its delicious dining options and lush amenities.

I learned if you want to use the free massage benefit, see if any appointments are available as you walk into the club. It gets backlogged quickly, understandably!

Does this type of airport oasis sound intriguing to you? Read more about my favorite travel credit cards here.

I thoroughly enjoyed my espresso martini and chocolate chip cookie while waiting for my 11-hour direct flight back to Germany. (Maybe you have wanted to plan a trip to Bavaria? Check out my Munich itinerary).

How To Get Around?

No doubt the best way to explore this city is with a rental car, but if that is not an option, there are other ways around this. Navigating the city of Los Angeles is possible if you tap into a mix of public transportation options. While car renting provides flexibility, the city’s traffic can be a nightmare.

The best way to explore is by combining methods:

  • Utilize the Metro system to glide through the city’s core.
  • Hop on the buses to reach significant attractions.
  • Embrace the expanding network of bike lanes for a leisurely spin, especially down by the beaches.
  • Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available, providing a hassle-free alternative.
  • As always, put on your best walking shoes to explore the vibrant neighborhoods on foot.

By blending various transportation modes, you’ll uncover the proper rhythm of LA while adding to the potential traffic.

Safety In LA

Safety is a top priority, especially for solo female travelers. The key is to opt for well-lit neighborhoods that are bustling with activity. Stick to the popular spots. Exploring iconic locations like Venice Beach, Griffith Observatory, or the Sunset Strip during daylight or well into the evening allows you to relax and keeps an added layer of security. While LA’s charm is undeniable, being aware of your surroundings is essential. LA is known for having a large homeless population. You will see a lot of tent communities, usually under overpasses. I try to avoid walking around those areas.

Sticking to popular and populated areas will ensure you have a memorable and safe experience in the City of Angels. So, don’t hesitate to embrace the glitz and glamour of LA while keeping an eye out for your well-being – a perfect blend of excitement and caution for an unforgettable journey. 😏

LA Culture & What To Expect

LA’s city culture is like a non-stop party where everyone’s invited. The people here are a mix of chill surfer dudes, aspiring actors chasing their big break, and foodies hunting down the latest taco truck sensation. You’ll see folks rollerblading down the boardwalk, street artists turning walls into masterpieces, and coffee shops buzzing with screenwriters hunched over their laptops.

It’s a place where flip-flops meet high fashion and where you can have a deep conversation about mindfulness one minute and catch a movie premiere buzz the next. LA’s vibe is relaxed yet highly energetic, and the people are just as colorful as the city.

Day 1: Explore The Iconic Landmarks

Start your adventure with a visit to Hollywood Boulevard . This street is one of the most iconic spots in Los Angeles. You can marvel at the Hollywood stars on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame and point out your favorite artist engraved into stars on the sidewalk. Stop by the Hollywood Museum to learn more about the film industry’s history as you stroll.

Hollywood walk of fame

After that, look for (and you can’t miss) the famous TCL Chinese Theatre . This theater is one of the most recognizable theaters in the world and hosts over 50 events a year, including film festivals and movie premieres. You can book a tour of the theater inside or, better yet, catch a movie if you have the time!

Right around the corner, stop and admire the Dolby Theatre , where the Academy Awards are hosted. Walking tours are possible!

Side tip: If there is rain in your forecast during your stay in Los Angeles, watching a movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre is perfect for a rainy day in LA.

Are you looking for a classic lunch location? Be sure to try the famous In-N-Out burger while visiting LA. It is within walking distance from the TCL Chinese Theatre. A bonus tip is to make your order “animal style.” There is one close by the Chinese Theatre… you’re welcome. 😉

In and Out Burger

Walk off that lunch and stroll along the Hollywood Hills for a close-up view of the Hollywood sign .

Hop on over, indulge in a shopping spree on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and have your Pretty Woman movie moment. If you’re like me, though, it will be mostly window shopping🥲. This street is a great place for luxury brands and people-watching. For a second, and only a second, it made me feel like I was living in Beverly Hills luxury.

Rodeo Drive

As the sun sets, experience the vibrant energy of Sunset Strip and its live music venues. Dine at a local restaurant along Sunset Boulevard to immerse yourself in the southern California nightlife. West Hollywood (or WeHo) is renowned for its electric nightlife along the iconic Sunset Strip. It hosts a vibrant LGBTQ+ community while embracing a stylish blend of fashion, art, and celebrity culture that defines its unique and inclusive character.

Here are some of the best places to check out on Sunset Blvd (starting from east to west):

Guitar Center: A massive music store where musicians and enthusiasts can find various instruments and equipment.

Chateau Marmont: An iconic luxury hotel known for its history, celebrity sightings, and Hollywood charm

Sunset Tower Hotel: A historic hotel that has housed many famous personalities over the years.

The Comedy Store: A comedy club that has showcased some of the biggest names in comedy.

The Viper Room: A legendary music venue where many iconic bands and artists have performed.

Whisky, a Go Go : Another historic music club known for launching the careers of numerous rock and pop legends.

The Roxy Theatre : A celebrated live music venue hosting countless renowned artists and bands.

Rainbow Bar & Grill: A rock ‘n’ roll-themed restaurant and bar frequented by rock stars and music enthusiasts.

Beverly Hills Hotel: Often referred to simply as “The Pink Palace,” it is known for its iconic pink façade and timeless luxury with its lush tropical gardens, poolside cabanas, and classic Polo Lounge.

As cringy as it sounds, I did a Celebrity Night Tour of LA , which was awesome! I loved driving around in a bus with open doors and avoiding all the traffic that comes during the day.

Day Culture Extravaganza

Take it easy this morning and let your wallet recover by exploring the Getty Center . This museum is free and houses an impressive art collection if that is something you’re into. The best part is that it offers incredible views of LA.

While on an art and culture kick, drive to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) . The highlight of this museum is its famous Urban Light installation.

Side tip: Another perfect thing to do on a rainy day in LA, Los Angeles Museum of Art

Let’s also add a *Fun Fact* , the La Brea Tar Pits are close to the museum, which offers a glimpse into prehistoric Los Angeles. It is an active paleontological research site.

Drive (or stop) through and immerse yourself in the artsy vibes of Melrose Avenue . This street has some unique shops and street art.

Now, to my favorite part of any trip, food! Unfortunately, I have not done this yet, but I have FOMO, and you must visit the Grand Central Market in downtown LA and savor all the diverse food options it offers. Some of the best things to try, I have been told, are the iconic egg sandwiches at Eggslut, Pupusas at Sarita’s Pupuseria, seafood ceviche from La Tostadería, or the famous Thai curry at Sticky Rice. Save room for indulgent ice cream treats from McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams, and wash it all down with a craft brew from Golden Road Brewery!

Food amrket

See if your schedule aligns and attend a concert or performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall . This building is renowned for its architectural beauty.

After, walk your way down and roam the streets of the Arts District , where creativity thrives. You will find colorful murals, captivating galleries, and vibrant street art that paint the neighborhood’s industrial backdrop with an artistic flair.

Here are a few restaurant options to soak up the vibrant atmosphere (updated August 2023):

Bestia: Known for its innovative Italian cuisine and rustic yet contemporary atmosphere, Bestia is a popular spot for foodies looking to indulge in house-made charcuterie, hand-rolled pasta, and a diverse selection of pizzas.

Manuela: This stylish eatery offers a farm-to-table dining experience with Southern flavors. Set within the Hauser & Wirth art gallery, they feature a seasonal menu with locally sourced ingredients.

Bavel: Known for its modern Middle Eastern cuisine, they offer a unique culinary experience with wood-fired pita and flavorful grilled meats. The restaurant’s chic ambiance and creative cocktails make it a sought-after destination for locals and visitors.

Day 3: Nature, Adventure, And Exploration

Let’s get active! Begin your day with a hike at Runyon Canyon for breathtaking city views.

The main loop trail is about 2.65 miles (4.3 kilometers) long. This loop takes you up to the highest point of the canyon, offering stunning views of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills, and the Pacific Ocean on clear days. Remember that shorter and longer trail options are available within the park, catering to different fitness levels and preferences.

(Early) Afternoon:

If you want adventure and thrill, spend your afternoon at a theme park like Universal Studios Hollywood ! You can experience the joy of walking through iconic movie sets, enjoy heart-pounding rides inspired by your favorite films, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry. Here is also the famous Wizarding World of Harry Potter . Universal Studios offers an immersive adventure for any age and lets you step into the world of Hollywood’s silver screen.

Harry Potter World LA

If you still have the energy after this adventurous day, head to the Griffith Observatory . It is a perfect place to gaze at the stars and the city lights. Admission to the building, grounds, and telescope is free, but there is a fee to park and enter the planetarium. Learn more here

Day 4: Coastal Escapes

Start your last day on a tranquil note by visiting Manhattan Beach in the morning. With its golden shores and gentle waves, it’s the perfect place for a serene beach walk, a refreshing dip in the Pacific, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee with the sound of the waves as your soundtrack.

The early hours offer a quieter atmosphere, allowing you to embrace the laid-back California beach vibe before the bustling day begins. Wes’ family has a house there, and he has been visiting every summer for most of his life. I love that I can now share some of their family traditions. Try Noah’s New York Bagels and enjoy them on the strand by the Manhattan Beach Pier.

ManhattanBeach Collage

Jump back in the car and spend your afternoon at Venice Beach Boardwalk, a fun place with street performers and live music. The beach is famous for its vast sandy shores, colorful Venice Skate Park, and the iconic Muscle Beach outdoor gym. Treat yourself to ice cream or street elote as you stroll along the Venice Boardwalk. Venice Beach’s artistic spirit, diverse community, and unique blend of entertainment, relaxation, and people-watching will keep you entertained all day.

Venice

Make your evening unforgettable with a visit to Santa Monica Pier in LA. Having the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop, indulge in the classic beachside amusement park, ride the iconic Ferris wheel, and savor a delicious meal at one of the pier’s waterfront restaurants. The warm afternoon sun casts a golden glow over the dock, creating a magical setting for a stroll and a chance to capture stunning photos of this iconic SoCal landmark.

Enjoy a nice restaurant in Santa Monica, and reflect on the amazing trip you just had in LA! 😊

Attend a Dodgers Game

Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or simply seeking an authentic local outing, a Dodgers game offers the chance to embrace the camaraderie of cheering fans and be a part of a longstanding tradition in the City of Angels, remember to grab some peanuts, a Michelada, and a Dodger Dog as you enjoy America’s favorite pastime in one of the most iconic stadiums in the country!

Visit Malibu

Escape to the coastal paradise of Malibu for an unforgettable experience. Drive down the Pacific Coast Highway and start at the Malibu Pier, where you can capture stunning ocean views, enjoy beachfront strolls, and even try fishing. Make a stop to eat a flavorful meal at Duke’s Malibu, a beachfront restaurant offering Hawaiian-inspired dishes and a laid-back atmosphere. For a touch of adventure, hike through the serene Solstice Canyon, where you’ll discover a picturesque waterfall and remnants of a historic home. It is about 1-1.5 hours roundtrip. It is worth the trip over there!

Solstice canyon malibu

Not technically in LA, but neighboring Anaheim; unleash your inner child and embark on a magical adventure by visiting Disneyland. Disneyland Park promises an immersive experience for all ages!

Little Tokyo

This charming neighborhood offers a captivating blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese influences, from authentic eateries serving delectable sushi to modern art galleries showcasing Japanese artistry. Wander through its vibrant streets, browse unique shops for traditional crafts, and soak in the tranquil ambiance of Japanese gardens.

Picnic in Griffith Park:

The park offers the perfect backdrop for a relaxed outdoor meal. Spread out your blanket near the Griffith Observatory for stunning city views, or choose a shady spot by one of the park’s tranquil trails and enjoy a relaxing meal.

Long Beach:

Another great spot in LA is Long Beach. Begin by exploring the historic Queen Mary ocean liner and diving into marine wonders at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Enjoy a stroll along the waterfront, dine at the diverse range of eateries, and shop for vintage treasures on Retro Row. Check out the serene surroundings of the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, and top off your day with a harbor cruise to experience the city’s dynamic coastline.

Ghost Tours:

Haunted LA is like stepping into a spine-tingling movie – think foggy streets, old Hollywood tales, and a touch of eerie mystery. The city’s haunted side adds an unexpected twist to the sunny glamour. Ghost enthusiasts can explore haunted hotspots like the legendary Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Marilyn Monroe is rumored to have made spectral appearances. Look for spooky tours to take you through haunted theaters, paranormal landmarks, and even a peek at LA’s darker history . Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, Haunted LA offers a captivating adventure into the city’s enigmatic and haunted past. Just keep your flashlight handy – you never know who might join the tour from the other side. 😉

Learn to Surf:

Hitting the waves with a surf lesson in LA is like diving headfirst into the city’s iconic beach scene, and it’s the perfect place to do it! Whether you’re a complete newbie (like me) or just looking to improve your skills, the experience is a must-do. LA’s surf instructors are the real deal: patient and passionate about sharing their love for the ocean. I saw children learning in surf camps this summer. It’s in their blood!

Plus, feeling accomplished when you finally ride a wave is unbeatable. So, swap your shoes for a board and embrace that laid-back surfer attitude!

Manhattan Beach Lifeguard

Go North – Santa Barbara

Here, you’ll be greeted by a captivating blend of Spanish influence and coastal allure. Wander through the picturesque Santa Barbara Courthouse, an architectural gem with stunning Spanish-style design and panoramic views from its clock tower.

Stroll down State Street, lined with boutiques and cafes, and savor a leisurely lunch at a charming Spanish-inspired eatery. Complete your day by relaxing on the sun-soaked shores of East Beach, where the Spanish ambiance and the Pacific Ocean create an idyllic backdrop for a memorable California vacation.

Santa Barbara

Go South – San Diego

I have not been yet, but it’s on my list! This city probably deserves more than one day, but sometimes we do not have that and must make it work. Visit the renowned San Diego Zoo to encounter exotic animals from around the globe, and then head to the scenic La Jolla Cove to witness playful seals and enjoy the serene ocean views. Wrap up your day by wandering along the lively Gaslamp Quarter, filled with restaurants, shops, and nightlife. A day in San Diego promises a perfect day!

Book The Tickets!

In just four incredible days, you can unlock the heart and soul of Los Angeles with the dynamic itinerary I’ve crafted for you. Each day promises a unique adventure, from iconic Hollywood landmarks and sun-soaked beaches to cultural gems. Remember, this itinerary is designed to be flexible, so feel free to mix and match activities based on your preferences and time constraints. 5 DAY LOS ANGELES ITINERARY FOR FIRST TIMERS (2024): THE ULTIMATE GUIDE & BEST THINGS TO DO!

los angeles travel youtube

LOOKING TO PLAN THE ULTIMATE 5 DAY LOS ANGELES ITINERARY?

The 5 day Los Angeles itinerary below is perfect for those visiting Los Angeles for the first time in 2024! We created and followed this itinerary ourselves a few years ago on our first and only visit to LA.

It highlights all the sights and activities we did over the 5 days in LA, more of the best guided tours in Los Angeles , where we recommend to stay and more!

5 DAY LOS ANGELES ITINERARY:

For our 5 day Los Angeles itinerary listed below, we begin first in the heart of Hollywood, exploring all the top hotspots including the Hollywood sign and Beverly Hills. Spend the last few days chilling out on iconic Venice Beach in Santa Monica!

DAY 1: HIKE BEHIND THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN & THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

MORNING: HIKE BEHIND THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN Grab an Uber this morning to Canyon Drive and set off on this epic Runyon Canyon trail towards the Hollywood Sign on top of Mt Lee. It is best to begin early to avoid the midday heat on the walk up, as there is little shade.

The trail is around 5 miles return. Make a short detour to the Bronson Caves, most famously known for hosting Batmans ‘Bat cave’ filming location just before the trail begins.

One of the best things you can do on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary is the Runyon Canyon hike up to behind the Hollywood sign! Pictured: Jordie marvelling in the views of Los Angeles on the Runyon Canyon trail. Photograph taken by Liam.

Reaching the top of Mt Lee, you are rewarded with a jaw-dropping panorama of Los Angeles city, perfectly framed by the iconic Hollywood Sign below! Sit, relax and enjoy the view with some snacks and drinks to refuel – you’ve earned it!

If you don’t want to hike by yourself, check out this 5* guided group walking tour to the Hollywood sign !

Top Tip : You must bring water and food with you. There are no drinking fountains on route and very little protective shade from the intense LA heat. Behind the Hollywood Sign, there are just three benches and a rubbish bin. There are also no toilets.

Top Tip : Don’t wear your best trainers for this route – the orange dirt will stain them! Wear a good pair of walking boots that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty!

Top Tip : When the dirt track ends, you hit a concrete road (about 3/4 into the trial). You can either turn left (downhill) or right (uphill). To get behind the Hollywood sign, go uphill to the right .

Top Tip : The Hollywood Sign is protected by a large wire fence. You cannot sit next to or touch the sign. If you want an undisturbed photo, get down from the viewpoint to fence level and put your lens through the fence gaps – or – get on your tip toes and take a photo from above the fence.

One of the best things you can do on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary is the Runyon Canyon hike up to behind the Hollywood sign!

AFTERNOON: VISIT THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY Half way back down from the Hollywood sign, follow the sign-posted route round to the Griffith Observatory. It’s an additional 15 to 20 minute walk from this point.

The Observatory is free to enter. The lower-ground level hosts multiple space-related exhibitions. Climb up to the upper level for unbelievable views of the LA skyline!

If you wanted to view the night sky through their giant ‘Zeiss’ telescopes, one of most “viewed-through” telescopes in the world, plan to visit after sundown instead. If you wanted the full experience of the Observatory without the crowds, there is the option to book a private guided tour !

Top Tip : Along the sign-posted route to The Griffith Observatory walking from the Hollywood sign, there are water fountains to fill up your bottles!

Top Tip : There are free public toilets at the Observatory front car park.

A visit to the iconic Griffith Observatory must be added to your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

SPOTTED WILDLIFE!

Wild Hummingbirds Spotted whizzing in the flowers at the Griffith Observatory! Los Angeles is home to 3 types: The Anna, Allens and Californian hummingbird. They create a subtle “hum” from flapping their wings 60 times per second ! Incredibly, they are the only bird that can fly backwards and hover in place. They also play an important part in nature – pollinating plants and collecting nectar. Another brilliant destination to see wild hummingbirds is Costa Rica .

When you visit the Griffith Observatory on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary, look out for the hummingbirds buzzing around outside!

DAY 2: WALK OF FAME, MELROSE AVENUE, BEVERLY HILLS & RODEO DRIVE

MORNING: WALK OF FAME Up bright and early today for a jam-packed day galavanting around the hotspots of Hollywood and Beverly Hills! First up is the most famous street in Los Angeles, Hollywood Boulevard.

Iconically known as the ‘Walk of Fame’, it is a must-do on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary. Trail the street to find the star of your favourite celebrities, you have 2,500 to choose from!

The Walk of Fame is the number one tourist stop that must be included in any first timers 5 day Los Angeles itinerary! Yes it's a tourist trap, but avoid most people by arriving early to Hollywood Boulevard. Photograph taken by Jordie.

Pop into the Chinese Theatre, a courtyard of concrete slabs with imprinted messages and hand prints from Hollywood icons including The Rock, Dick Van Dyke, Johnny Depp and Cher!

After the Walk of Fame, look for the famous imprints in the outdoor courtyard of the Chinese Theatre next door. Pictured is Cher's hand and shoe imprints! Photograph taken by Jordie.

Reality Check : The Walk of Fame is unfortunately not so “glossy and glam” in real life. It is actually very grubby, with multiple stars being scuffed, stained and covered in gum. There are also a lot of homeless people here.

Top Tip : The ‘A-List’ celebrity stars tend to be nearer the main Boulevard (near Madame Tussauds and the Chinese Theatre). There are also stars for fictional and cartoon characters, not just celebrities!

Top Tip : To avoid being trampled by tourists, visit early in the morning to take your photographs of / with the stars, as you will have the majority of the Walk of Fame to yourself. Venture back in the afternoon, when the Boulevard buzz comes alive!

MORNING: MELROSE AVENUE STOP OFF (OPTIONAL) Make a short stop off at Melrose Avenue (near the Paul Smith store) for some photo opportunities with some super quirky and bold wall murals!

Top Tip : The majority of Melrose Avenue stores do not open until 11am/12pm.

Pictured: Jordie with the mural outside Carrera Cafe, located directly opposite the pink Paul Smith store on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles. Photograph taken by Liam.

AFTERNOON: GROVE MALL & ORIGINAL FARMERS MARKET Hop in an UBER and get dropped off at The Grove. Let your credit card run wild in boutique stores like Anthropologie, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Nike, Sephora and Michael Kors to name a few.

Indulge in ATM Cupcakes, ice creams or revel in a maze of bustling food stalls at The Original Farmers Market next door, offering fresh fruit smoothies, BBQ grills, seafood, tacos, burgers, coffee & crêpes.

Fun Fact : You can see original works by Pablo Picasso in the Grand Lobby restroom seating areas!

Fun Fact : You can rent a free phone charger from the Grand Lobby concierge during your time at The Grove!

Pictured: The Grove outdoor shopping mall in central Los Angeles. Photograph taken by Jordie.

AFTERNOON: BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL Next up is the Beverly Hills Hotel, a keeper of Hollywood history, astronomical business deals and secret celebrity hideaways since 1912. Grab a hotel sign photo & waltz up the red carpet to the main lobby.

Look around public areas or grab a cocktail in the ‘Polo Lounge’. You’re bound to spot a celebrity or two! An absolute must on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

Pictured: Jordie grabbing a photo with the Beverly Hills hotel sign, one of our favourite stops during our 5 day Los Angeles itinerary! Photograph taken by Liam.

Fun fact : This hotel has been around before Beverly Hills even existed! Beverly Hills city was literally built around this iconic ‘Pink Palace’.

Fun fact : Out of the 23 bungalows on the hotel grounds, Marilyn Monroe’s favourite was #7.

AFTERNOON: BEVERLY HILLS MANSIONS & RODEO DRIVE Get dropped off at this Rodeo Drive residential spot to see HUGE picture-perfect Beverly Hills mansions, before making the short walk down to the iconically wealthy shopping avenue of Rodeo Drive.

Want to see more Movie Star homes around Beverly Hills? Be sure to book onto this 5* guided “Movie Star Homes & LA Sightseeing” bike tour .

Fun Fact : The average house price in Beverly Hills is a staggering $3,500,000!

Be sure to see all of the incredible mansions on Rodeo Drive, where some of Beverly Hills richest residents live!

AFTERNOON: RODEO DRIVE SHOPPING AVENUE Rodeo Drive – A small, famous and A-list exclusive shopping avenue lined with immaculate designer stores and to-die-for super cars. Find upmarket stores such as of Chanel, Valentino, Prada, Gucci and Alexander McQueen here.

Apart from the House of Bijan (which is appointment only), trace the steps of many celebrities and take time to window-shop inside the pristinely designed stores.

Pictured: Liam with the famous 'House of Bijan' yellow sports car outside on Rodeo Drive. Photograph taken by Jordie.

Fun Fact : In the movie ‘Pretty Woman’, Rodeo Drive is the movie location where Vivian (Julia Roberts) goes shopping!

Fun fact : Rodeo Drive is home to the most expensive store in the world – The House of Bijan. A tie can go for up to $1,000, a suit $25,000! You enter by secured appointment only, which must be approved by the owner. They have provided suits for the likes of Barack Obama, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jordan and Tom Cruise!

Fun fact : Parked outside the House of Bijan, you will always find an iconic yellow super-car: a tribute to its late owner, Bijan Pakzad. When we visited, it was a $1.6 million Rolls Royce!

Pictured: Jordie walking up the quaint cobbles of Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, channeling her inner Julia Roberts! Photograph taken by Liam. A must do on any first timers Los Angeles itinerary!

Did You Know ? Marilyn Monroe’s final resting place is at the ‘ Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary ‘ in Los Angeles, where many tourists visit to pay their respects.

Incredibly, the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner bought the plot next to Marilyn’s grave for $75,000, stating “spending eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up!”. Marilyn was his first Playboy cover girl, and now both can be found side by side in this small, off the beaten track cemetery.

If you can, do try and add this into your Los Angeles itinerary .

DAY 3: UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD

Let your inner child loose today on this full, jam-packed day of all things Universal Studios! Have your mind blown by the amazing virtual reality rides, grab a Butter beer at Harry Potter World, take the studio tour to active filming lots and see the animal stars show!

Pictured: Jordie and Liam at the front entrance of Universal Studios Hollywood. We had the best day here during our 5 day Los Angeles itinerary, and you absolutely will to!

We highly recommend buying the ‘ Skip The Line: Universal Express ’ entry ticket. It provides one-time ‘skip the line’ access for each ride, attraction, seated show & the studio tour! It also gives early 9am access into ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’, before the main crowds arrive at 10am.

Click to buy the ‘Skip the Line: Express Ticket at Universal Studios Hollywood’! 🎫💎

Top Tip : Each show at Universal Studios runs 3 times daily. Download the free ‘Universal Studios Hollywood’ App to check the time slots on your chosen day. This is a great tool to benchmark where you need to be so you don’t miss anything! Shows available are ‘Universal Animal Actors’, ‘The Special Effects Show’ and ‘WaterWorld’. This App also provides an offline map of the park.

universal studios hollywood app

Universal Studios Hollywood App Theme Park Map and Day Planner Download on  Apple . Download on  Android .

Top Tip : The best virtual reality ride there is ‘The Simpsons’. You cannot miss it. The Harry Potter ‘The Forbidden Journey’ ride is a very close second!

Let your inner child run wild at 'The Wizarding World of Harry Potter' at Universal Studios Hollywood. This must be added everyones Hollywood itinerary! Photographs taken by Liam.

DAY 4: TRANSFER TO SANTA MONICA, VENICE CANALS & VENICE BEACH

MORNING: TRANSFER TO THE LA COAST Check out of your Hollywood hotel before heading west to the coast line of Venice Beach this morning. Drop off your luggage / settle into your new Venice Beach accommodation. The journey by UBER should take approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Spend a few days basking in the Californian sunshine on the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

AFTERNOON: VENICE BEACH PROMENADE TO THE PIER Stroll down the bustling Venice Beach Promenade this afternoon, bursting with live street performers, budding musicians and countless thrift shops and bars.

Divert onto the soft sandy beach as you make your way towards the Venice Beach fishing pier, stealing a few selfies next to the iconic Baywatch lifeguard huts on the way!

Spend a few days basking in the Californian sunshine on the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

Top Tip : There are free public toilets to use right next to Muscle Beach!

Reality check : There are a lot of homeless people and their tents lined along the Venice Promenade.

Reality check : The iconic ‘Muscle Beach’ outdoor gym equipment (famed by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is now extremely run-down and rusty. It’s also much smaller than we had imagined.

Pictured: The eclectic pop up shops we spotted along the Venice Beach promenade (left) and the Venice Beach skate park (right). Photographs taken by Jordie.

AFTERNOON: VISIT THE VENICE CANAL DISTRICT Before you head back up towards Santa Monica, you must visit the Venice Canal Historic District, a quaint residential area built upon a series of dreamy interconnecting canals. These canals were originally created in 1905 by Abbot Kinney, as part of his ‘Venice of America’ programme!

When you reach Venice Beach on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary, be sure to weave down the Venice Canals district!

Fun Fact : When opened in 1905, the original purpose of the boat houses lining the canals was to host family weekend holidays! Now, most of them are permanent residences.

Fun Fact : There are six waterways in total: Grand, Eastern, Carroll, Linnie, Lowland and Sherman, totalling to 1.5 miles in length along a grid system.

DAY 5: SURFING LESSON, RENT A BEACH CRUISER & SANTA MONICA PIER

MORNING: TAKE A SURFING LESSON Have some serious fun this morning learning to surf on the iconic Californian coast of Santa Monica! Catch the waves on either a shared small group 2 hour group surfing lesson or even opt for your own private surfing lesson !

AFTERNOON: RENT A BEACH CRUISER Explore the full length of the coastline in style by renting a beach cruiser bike! See all bike rental shops available here . Zip along the Santa Monica & Venice coastline with ease along the Venice Boardwalk.

Another option is to rent electronic scooters called ‘Birds’ (find them all along the beach) via the ‘ Bird – Enjoy the Ride ‘ App.

Top Tip : The bike rentals usually come with locks to chain to available bike racks as you stop off and explore different destinations.

Top Tip : As well as bikes, you can also hire e-scooters and roller skates from most of the rental stores.

Pictured: Jordie and Liam zipping down the Venice boardwalk between Santa Monica and Venice Beach on our rented beach cruisers! This was such a fun activity and time-convenient way to explore during our 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

EVENING: SANTA MONICA PIER Wind down your day strolling the wooden walkway of Santa Monica pier. Lose yourself in old-school amusement arcades, fairground rides, magicians, performers and nautical restaurants that give Santa Monica Pier its renowned electric, vibrant vibe.

You must venture around the electric Santa Monica Pier when in Venice Beach on your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary!

Top Tip : Get a quick workout in on the ‘ Original Muscle Beach ‘, a collection of modern gym apparatus and fun activities located just before Santa Monica Pier!

Fun Fact : Santa Monica Pier is the end destination of the infamous Route 66 drive!

Fun Fact : Santa Monica Pier was actually designed to protect a large sewage pipe, which originally dumped treated sewage into the sea and away from the beach.

WHERE TO STAY IN CENTRAL HOLLYWOOD

For this 5 day Los Angeles itinerary, we would suggest staying in Hollywood for Day 1 to 3 to be in close proximity of the inner city sights. This isn’t just more convenient, but cost effective for UBER journeys too.

Note : If you stay in Hollywood, we want to reiterate it is not safe to walk around Hollywood at night by yourself. Always get an UBER.

See below our Hollywood accommodation top picks:

🏙️ Loews Hollywood Hotel 🏙️ Hotel 850 SVB West Hollywood 🏙️ Palihouse West Hollywood

WHERE TO STAY IN VENICE BEACH

For Day 4 to 5 of our itinerary above, we would then suggest changing accommodation to stay in the Venice Beach area. See below our Venice Beach accommodation top picks:

🏝️ AIR Venice On The Beach (where we stayed & would highly recommend!) 🏝️ The Kinney 🏝️ Venice Breeze Suites

GETTING AROUND LOS ANGELES

Can you get around la without a car.

Technically, it would be very difficult to get around Los Angeles without a car. It is extremely vast and walking from one attraction to the other is just not feasible. If you aren’t fazed by Los Angeles notorious traffic, there is the option to rent a car in Los Angeles .

It is also the best way to explore key destinations surrounding Los Angeles, such as Malibu or Laguna Beach. You could even make it a Californian road trip to San Francisco !

los angeles travel youtube

Los Angeles is incredibly vast, and the majority of attractions are not within walking distance, and there’s little to no public transport. Make use of the abundant UBER drivers in LA. You need the app installed and internet when you’re out. Tip: No need for cash. You tip and rate the driver via the App after the drop off has completed!

Once dropped off by UBER, explore the area on foot!

Rent an iconic ‘beach cruiser’ bike to cycle the boardwalk from Venice Beach to Santa Monica Pier!

ALL “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO” QUESTIONS

Is los angeles safe for tourists.

Before travelling to LA, it is crucial to know that due to its high volume of homelessness, the Hollywood area in particular is not overly safe for tourists to wander around on their own.

Busy tourists hotspots in Hollywood, such as the Walk of Fame for example, are OK in the day time, but just be vigilant for pick pockets.

That being said, it is not considered safe to walk on your own in a lot of places in LA at night. It is highly recommended to get an UBER to get to all of your destinations.

Make sure to download the Uber app and set up your account before you venture to LA. We used Ubers to get everywhere in LA and it was a very seamless and reasonably priced service!

WHAT ARE THE BEST MONTHS TO VISIT LOS ANGELES?

Los Angeles has TWO definitive weather seasons to be aware of: A Wet and Dry season!

☔︎︎ WET SEASON (November to March)

During these months, the iconic sunshine of Los Angeles is usually nowhere to be seen, instead replaced with winds, clouds and a lot of rain. The wettest months are between January to March. January is the also coldest month in Los Angeles, with an average of 13°c (55°F)!

🌞 DRY SEASON (April to October)

Los Angeles dry season provides a relief for all sun worshippers, typically bringing the bright blue skies, beaming sunshine and hot balmy temperatures that Los Angeles is so well known for. Summer temperatures reach max averages of 26-29°c (78-84°F).

HOWEVER – This typically excludes the months of May and June. During these months, Los Angeles experiences a phenomenon known as “May Gray” and “June Gloom”, where marine stratus clouds can bring in almost constant cloud cover this time of year!

We can vouch for this as we visited Los Angeles in June, and we only had one day with a bit of sunshine! The rest of the time was warm, but totally cloudy!

Though July to August brings almost guaranteed sunshine and the highest temperatures, it also results in heavy smog levels, which can make it uncomfortable to walk around and explore during the day.

OUR VERDICT – THE SWEET SPOT

Overall, we believe the best months to visit Los Angeles are between the months March to April, or September to October:

March to April have comfortably warm max averages of 20-23°c (around 70°F), with little rain, making walking around and visiting outdoor attractions much more comfortable. It’s also out of season, therefore much less crowded by tourists plus cheaper hotels, flights and tours!

In the same way, September and October also still embraces the warm heat from Summer with a max average of 26-28°c (around 80°F), less crowds and a plus of the warmest ocean temperatures of the year!

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO SEE LOS ANGELES?

If you were simply staying in the inner city, we would suggest 3 days would be enough to visit Los Angeles. However, we believe to get the best out of your Los Angeles itinerary, you need at least a few more days to venture out and explore coastal areas of Santa Monica and Venice Beach too. Therefore, for the best Los Angeles itinerary plan, we would say 5 days is the perfect amount of time to visit!

HOW CAN I SPEND 5 DAYS IN LOS ANGELES?

We have you covered! Our 5 day Los Angeles itinerary above explains how to spend an epic 5 days in Los Angeles. The first 3 days will be spent in Los Angeles city itself, with the last 2 days moving to the coast to Santa Monica and Venice beach.

WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LA?

Our itinerary above captures every major sight that everyone visiting LA should visit, including the classic hotspots such as the Walk of Fame and Rodeo Drive.

It also includes epic activities such as the trail to walk behind the Hollywood sign and renting a beach cruiser on Venice beach!

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET TO LOS ANGELES?

The best way to get to Los Angeles is by flying directly into its main airport, Los Angeles International (LAX). Check Skyscanner for flights on your dates . From here, you can jump into one of many taxi’s waiting outside or order an Uber to take you to into the city.

Developed in the early 20th century, Venice Beach is modeled – canals and all – after its  namesake city in Italy . Berries for sale at the Original Farmers Market

Highlights: Open-air market offering fresh produce and local goods every day of the week

The Los Angeles Farmers Market first started in 1934 as a very modest affair that sprung from the hardships created by the Great Depression. At the height of the economic depression, eighteen farmers came together and set up stalls on a piece of open land near Wilshire Boulevard in order to sell their produce direct to the consumer.

This experiment was so successful that the market continued to expand. At that time, it truly was a fruit and vegetable market, but over the years the market has grown to accommodate more and more vendors. Today, the market hosts vegetable and other food stands, as well as restaurants and specialty shops. You can find everything from jewelry and candles to kitchenware and toys.

The LACMA is next to the La Brea Tar Pits on museum row.

And there are a lot more things to do in Beverly Hills besides shopping and dining. The city is very walkable with several gardens, historic buildings, and public art throughout. Spend some time at Beverly Gardens Park for a sample of these first-class public spaces.

Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits

Highlights: Indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the incredible natural history of the area

In Hancock Park, La Brea Tar Pits offers a unique opportunity to see live excavations of fossils and learn about the process. The Tar Pits were formed 40,000 years ago, when oil seeped through the rock, entrapping passing animals, which would get stuck in the substance. The tar then preserved the fossils throughout the ages, leaving behind an incredible glimpse into another age.

The museum at la Brea Tar Pits (formerly the George C. Page Museum) shows reconstructed fossils of prehistoric animals found at the site, as well as the process of fossil recovery. You can see bones being worked on and learn what takes place behind the scenes, before skeletons are able to be displayed.

The museum displays fully reconstructed fossils of a variety of mammals including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and others, all dating from between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. An outdoor area displays replicas of extinct animals.

Plans are in the works for a renovation and new design. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is reviewing plans from architecture teams in the hopes of reinventing this unique attraction.

Lanterns in Little Tokyo

Highlights: Japanese restaurants, historic fire tower, wishing tree, gardens

Los Angeles is home to one of just three remaining Japantowns in the United States: Little Tokyo. The petite neighborhood packs tons of culture, cuisine, and color into about five city blocks.

The Japanese Village Plaza is considered the central gathering place. Lit by red and white paper lanterns, this pedestrian-only plaza feels like it was plucked from Tokyo and dropped into Downtown Los Angeles. Check out the Yagura Tower at the First Street entrance—this replica of a rural Japanese fire tower has been greeting visitors for nearly 50 years.

In addition to popular shops, like Nijiya grocery store and the Sanrio Hello Kitty boutique , another major attraction is the wishing tree . People from around the world jot down their hopes and dreams on colorful paper strips, then hang them from the tree's branches in hopes that they'll come to fruition. Reading the notes is deeply touching.

Come hungry—Little Tokyo has some of the best Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Slurp ramen noodles at Hachioji , fill up on okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima speciality!) at Chinchikurin , and satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh mochi from the 120-year-old Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop .

Long Beach is another community in the Los Angeles area that's easy to spend a day exploring. It borders LA to the south, about 20 miles from downtown, and extends along San Pedro Bay. The miles of beach in Long Beach are common motives for a visit, capped off by a tourist-friendly and attraction-filled waterfront downtown district.

Things to do in Long Beach's waterfront district include a visit to the historic Queen Mary ocean liner , due to reopen in late 2022; the Aquarium of the Pacific ; and exploring the unique shops at Shoreline Village . You can also catch the Catalina Express for a trip to Santa Catalina Island .

And it's not just the ocean to explore in Long Beach. Several of the city's best parks also offer inland attractions, like the historic Bixby Park or sprawling El Dorado East Regional Park. El Dorado East is also home to the lovely Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden , filled with tranquil appeal.

Grill of a Vintage Automobile

Highlights: Classic antiques with an emphasis on vintage vehicles spanning the last century

If you're a fan of antique, vintage, and classic cars, this is the place to visit. The Nethercutt Collection displays an outstanding array of American and European automobiles from the 1890s to the 1990s. The pristine condition of these vehicles and the variety of models is beyond impressive. The history of the cars and descriptions of their previous owners are displayed with the vehicles.

The museum also showcases a collection of antique furniture and mechanical musical instruments. Outside, you can see a restored steam locomotive and railcar.

Address: 15151 Bledsoe Street, Sylmar, California

The Getty Villa

Highlights: Stunning courtyard, gardens, and rare art and sculpture collections

The Getty Villa is the other site operated by the Getty cultural institution, located near the ocean in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, just east of Malibu. It's set within a photogenic recreation of a Roman country house with decorative gardens and courtyards.

On display throughout the Getty Villa are ancient artworks and relics, ranging from marble statues to rare coins and jewelry. Different exhibits are found around every corner on the first and second floors of the museum, and in combination with the landscaped settings, expect to spend at least two to three hours exploring the grounds.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

Highlights: Downtown museum with satellite locations and ever-changing art on display

The Museum of Contemporary Art ( MOCA ) consists of two separate facilities and is dedicated to works from the 1940s onwards. Pieces from the permanent collection are on display, and regularly changing exhibits feature new works and emerging media.

The MOCA Grand , on Grand Avenue, is the museum's primary facility, with the main galleries, as well as the largest museum store. The MOCA Geffen is in Little Tokyo, in what was formerly a police car warehouse.

Double Negative is another art location associated with MOCA, located in the desert in Moapa Valley on Mormon Mesa near Overton, in Nevada. This land art by Michael Heizer was acquired by the museum and can be visited free of charge.

Santa Monica Hotels

  • Shops, fabulous restaurants, blonde beaches, and the famous Santa Monica Pier make this a natural magnet for tourists and locals alike. Easy access to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive are also a bonus for sightseers. The Viceroy Santa Monica and the eco-conscious boutique Shore Hotel are popular high-end accommodation options, and the stylish Shutters on the Beach exudes all the casual elegance of a family beach house.
  • For those seeking a fantastic salt-laced location without breaking the bank, try the Ocean View Hotel .

Beverly Hills Hotels

  • Famous for the designer shops along Rodeo Drive, this exclusive celebrity enclave offers some plush hotels in a quieter setting than Hollywood, but still with easy access to all the movie-themed attractions. Top high-end hotels include the famous Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard , The Peninsula Beverly Hills , the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel , and the Maybourne Beverly Hills .
  • For those seeking the glamour without the price tag to match, the Sonder Beverly Terrace is a great option.
  • Farther north, the Hotel Bel-Air pampers guests amid 12 acres of flower-flecked gardens.

Hollywood Hotels

  • Star struck travelers headed for the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Bowl , and Universal Studios should stay here in the heart of movie land. Close to Beverly Hills, Hollywood oozes with celebrity glitz and glamor without gauging the wallet. The Hollywood Roosevelt and the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel are both highly rated options in the area.

Anaheim Hotels

  • Families headed to the theme parks with the kids in tow usually base themselves here in a whimsical Disney-themed hotel. Popular options include the Disneyland Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa , an easy stroll from the Disney theme parks.
  • Sonesta ES Suites Anaheim Resort Area is a more affordable option with convenient apartment-style accommodation.

Downtown Los Angeles Hotels

  • Bristling with new restaurants and art galleries amid the skyscrapers, Downtown LA is finally finding its soul. Sports fans catching a game at the Staples Center, hipsters, foodies, and business travelers often base themselves here and score cheaper hotel rates than at the typical tourist hot spots. Popular quality hotel choices include the luxury Omni Los Angeles at California Plaza near the Walt Disney Concert Hall , and the more modestly priced Doubletree by Hilton .

See the Sights:

  • One of the best ways to see Los Angeles is on a Los Angeles City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Tour , which offers a fun overview of the city with maximum flexibility. Enjoy 360-degree views from the open-air bus and hop on or off at more than 50 locations, including Beverly Hills, Hollywood, downtown LA, and Santa Monica. Choose between a 24- or 48-hour ticket.

Save Money:

  • If you plan on visiting multiple attractions while you're in the City of Angels, the Go City: Los Angeles Explorer Pass is a great way to save money. This versatile card gives you discounts at top Los Angeles attractions. You can choose between two and seven attractions from a list of 30.

Los Angeles notoriously enjoys warm weather throughout the year. However, the best seasons to visit are the "shoulder seasons," including spring (March, April, May) and fall (September, October, and November). The air is easier to breathe this time of year, and the streets are less crowded with tourists.

June, July, and August are still some of the most popular times to visit Lost Angeles. And for good reason. The hot weather beckons for the beach and the late evenings extend a day of exploring. Expect to pay the highest rates for things like lodging and transportation this time of year.

The winter months, including December, January, and February, are suitable months to visit. Expect slightly colder temperatures that keep most people away from the beach. But, with average daytime temperatures still in the 60s Fahrenheit, it's often a welcomed warm escape from other parts of the country.

ABC News fires meteorologist Rob Marciano after reports of alleged behavior issues

ABC News and longtime meteorologist Rob Marciano have gone their separate ways.

Marciano was fired Tuesday after a decade of working on ABC News programs including “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight,” sources confirmed to The Times. The journalist, who most recently appeared on “Good Morning America: Weekend Edition,” left ABC News a year after Page Six reported that he was banned from ABC News’ Times Square Studios for alleged behavioral issues.

A representative for ABC News declined to comment Wednesday. A representative for Marciano did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

Poppy Harlow will be a co-anchor on a new CNN morning program.

Page Six reported in March 2023 that Marciano, 55, was denied access to ABC News’ Times Square Studios “after he made a colleague feel uncomfortable” in 2022.

“He was found to have done something … that was improper, but he was punished for it, and they still haven’t let him return,” a source told the website. Sources did not provide more details about the alleged incident between Marciano and his colleague, but they told Page Six that he had “anger management issues” and that “there was a period where there were some issues, a number of alarming events.”

Months after Page Six published its report, Marciano celebrated 10 years with ABC News in an I nstagram post in September. “I couldn’t be more pumped to continue this journey with all of you,” he wrote.

NBC News cuts ties with Ronna McDaniel after internal backlash

After a day of being battered by MSNBC hosts, the network reversed course on making the former Republican National Committee chair an on-air contributor.

March 26, 2024

His post detailed his continued contributions to ABC News programming, and touted the opportunity to spend “more quality time with my kiddos on the weekends.”

Marciano added: “My thanks to the bosses who listened and made this work-life balance possible. I’m also grateful for an exciting new project with NatGeo that has me exploring some very very cool stuff… more to come!”

Marciano joined ABC News in September 2014 and covered a variety of natural disasters — including wildfires in Southern California and volcanic eruptions in Hawaii — during his tenure. Before ABC News, he worked for Entertainment Tonight and CNN.

On Instagram, Marciano had not yet addressed his firing, first reported by Puck News . His most recent post was a shared video with “World News Tonight” teasing his on-the-field coverage of Louisiana residents’ efforts to rebuild their community after storms.
