Just days after accepting her Icon Award at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Ivy Queen performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series as part of the third “El Tiny” takeover featuring “artists from all corners of Latinidad.”

The Puerto Rican superstar, known as “La Caballota” and “La Reina del Reggaeton,” acknowledged that she felt happy and nervous “doing something out of my comfort zone.”

But, as she noted, she’s faced challenges all her life.

“I’ve been told ‘no’ a thousand times,” she said.

She continued to follow her heart because, “Yo sabía que a mi no había que darmela porque yo la tenía.” (“I knew that it didn’t have to be given to me because I had it.”)

“Nobody was going to take that talent away from me,” she said.

Ivy Queen performed a 25-minute set alongside her band, which was made up of strings and piano. Her set featured “Reza por Mi,” “La Vida Es Así,” “Menor Que Yo,” “En Que Fallamos” and “Quiero Bailar.”

“Guys, this is for the girls,” she said before performing “Quiero Bailar,” a feminist track about asserting independence and body autonomy in the club.

Early in her set, she lighted a candle that had an image of Bad Bunny on it. “La gente tiene la patita del conejo, y yo tengo a Benito completo,” she quipped. (“People have the rabbit’s foot. I have all of Benito.”)

Ivy Queen offered life lessons in between songs. She spoke about how music influences “every sense of the word” and the importance of empowering women and taking care of youth. “Empowerment without action is not empowerment,” she said.

“I’m 51. Embrace your age,” she said. “Cuando tu te cuidas y te amas, se siente, se ve y floreces.” (“When you take care of and love yourself, you feel it, you see it and you bloom.”)

“Tenemos derecho a ser feliz, tenemos derecho a cambiar, a cuidarnos, a protegernos,” she said. (“We have the right to be happy, we have the right to change, to take care of ourselves, to protect ourselves.”)

This Latinx Heritage Month Tiny Desk is celebrating with an 'El Tiny' takeover, featuring a wide array of artists from all corners of Latinidad.

" La gente tiene la patita del conejo / y yo tengo a Benito completo ," Ivy Queen quips, lighting a candle featuring Bad Bunny at an El Tiny altar to reggaeton ("People have the rabbit's foot / I have all of Benito.") Even her jokes flow. Thanks to far more than luck, "La Caballota" has carried and passed the torch since the '90s with an ironclad sense of self and unwavering commitment to the women and femmes she writes for.

And she's done it in no uncertain terms. After a propulsive performance of "La Vida es Así," she soberly says that women are judged no matter what. For a long time, she was the most visible canvas upon which projections of women in reggaeton were placed, and her talent was nurtured from within. " Yo sabía que a mi no había que darmela porque yo la tenía ," she later notes. ("I knew that it didn't have to be given to me because I had it.") The road has widened, not without a struggle.

Finally, she addresses the mujeres directly for the song. " Tenemos derecho a ser feliz, tenemos derecho a cambiar, a cuidarnos, a protegernos ," she exhorts. ("We have the right to be happy, we have the right to change, to take care of ourselves, to protect ourselves.") "Quiero Bailar," two decades later and literally performed behind a desk, feels as urgent and insurgent now. Or, as she puts it, simply: "Guys, this is for the girls." With Ivy Queen, it always has been.

An exclusive look at Ivy Queen’s stripped and stunning ‘El Tiny Desk’ performance

If you were born in a Spanish-speaking family, Ivy Queen was a part of your life. Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico and built a career that boomed at a time when reggaeton was making its international crossover. Unlike Daddy Yankee , Nicky Jam , and other reggeatoneros of the era, Ivy Queen was a woman. Her ascent was unique and marked a before-and-after moment for an industry that now has plenty of women ranking in the charts, all solely because of her influence.

HOLA USA! attended Ivy Queen’s Tiny Desk concert. The stage, which is located in NPR’s headquarters in Washington D.C., has hosted all manner of musicians, from pop stars to indie artists. Ivy Queen comes as a crowning jewel of sorts in NPR’s Hispanic Heritage coverage, which is a month-long segment nicknamed ‘El Tiny’, lead by NPR Music’s’ Alt.Latino. “We’ve been making ‘El Tiny Desk’ for the past three years,” explains Felix Contreras , one of the co-hosts of Alt.Latino, which he runs alongside Anamaria Sayre . “The idea was that we had so many Latin artists that we couldn’t stretch them out to just a few weeks. We ended up doing the whole month.”

Ivy Queen 'El Tiny Desk' NPR

This year’s ‘El Tiny Desk’ has welcomed Latin artists of all backgrounds and genres, from the Venezuelan beach band Rawayana to the queer trap of Villano Antillano . “We try to do a combination of the pop world and some folklore. It’s very important for us to recognize the folkloric roots of whatever culture we’re spotlighting. And we also have alternative artists, artists that need more recognition. We have to balance those three things,” Contreras said.

Ivy Queen is a throwback to a different type of reggaeton, one that was sparser, made up of lyrics and unforgettable percussions. She lands somewhere within the pop world and folklore spectrum, with every reggaeton artist that has come out since the 2000s owing a great deal of debt to her work. Ivy attended the show alongside her band, made up of strings, and a piano. The sonic landscape gave Ivy’s songs a chance to reinvent themselves, resulting in an emotional set that showcased her vocal range and the strength of her songwriting, with lyrics that are feminist and proud, remaining as powerful as they were when they were first released. She performed a 25-minute set that featured hits like ‘Reza por Mi’, ‘La Vida Es Asi’, ‘Menor Que Yo’, and ‘En Que Fallamos’. As Quiero Bailar ’s opening strings began, a current of electricity ran through the room.

“My favorite part of doing Tiny Desk is I always find a spot to sit and look at the faces of the audience. Because that’s the best part: People enjoying themselves, enjoying the artist, and the space that they’re in,” said Contreras. As Ivy sang and joked, sharing some hard-earned wisdom with the audience, it made for a surprisingly vulnerable moment, with people wiping off their tears and turning to look at each other’s reactions. All of us within steps of each other, listening to an artist at her most stripped, a force that remains just as powerful as she’s always been.

Ivy Queen Performs Reimagined Versions of Her Reggaetón Anthems in NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Ivy Queen performed her reggaetón anthems for NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts on Wednesday (Oct. 11). And, she wasn't alone; backed by a live orchestra including a violin, cello, viola, double bass and a piano, the Puerto Rican superstar sang from "La Vida Es Así" to "Menor Que Yo" and "Quiero Bailar."

"Let me take you to my motherland - Puerto Rico, that is," she said at the beginning of her 24-minute set. She went on to belt out the lyrics to her first song, "Reza Por Mí," and afterwards added: "I'm more nervous than you are, believe me. Singing here isn't the same as singing in the studio. There are songs that transcend time and my songs have always been a message for us all. And there are songs we didn't dare dedicate to anyone. Sing this one with me if you know it."

She was talking about her ultra-empowering "La Vida Es Así." Later, after explaining that the lyrics she writes narrate her life, she delivered a poignant message any women listening to her intimate set. "We have the right to be happy, we have the right to change, to take care of ourselves, to protect ourselves." She wrapped her set with "En Que Fallamos" and "Quiero Bailar."
