All clients are required to call us tollfree within New Zealand on 0800 801 616 at least 24 hours prior to departure for a weather check, to reconfirm booking details and to receive confirmation of departure time. This will allow for alternative flight arrangements to be made if weather conditions are unfavorable.

If you cancel your reservation more than 24 hours from the departure time, a full refund will be made. Cancellations within 24 hours of the departure time will incur a 100% cancellation fee.

Glacier Heli-hike

Pick your glacier: the Tasman Glacier on the east side of Mt. Cook, or the Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast. Take the one-hour flight with us from Queenstown to Franz or Mt. Cook, then gear up and board your helicopter for a two-hour hike on the glacier. There you'll explore ice-caves and crevasses and learn about the natural processes that govern glacier activity from your guide.

Departure time is 9:30am, returning at 4:30pm. Winter (May 1st to September 30th) departure is 8:30am returning by 4:00pm.

From Christchurch you’ll cross the Southern Alps on board the world famous TranzAlpine Scenic Train.  On reaching the ruggedly beautiful West Coast you’ll follow the coastline south to Franz Josef where you’ll spend the next 2 nights.  From your base in Franz Josef you’ll have time to explore the pristine wilderness of Westland Tai Poutini National Park and the fabulous glaciers.  Leaving the glacier region you’ll continue south through the stunning Haast Pass to the Southern Lakes region and the ‘Adventure Capital’ of Queenstown.

Your early morning departure is rewarded with incredible scenery today onboard the TranzAlpine Scenic Train , considered one of the world's great train journeys. It travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From your carriage you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through the lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth, a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the West Coast glaciers.

Leaving Greymouth, you will head south to Franz Josef and Glacier Country.  Continue on through Ross, a historic gold mining town where several buildings still remain intact. As you travel further down the coast you’ll also go through Hari Hari, the town where Guy Menzies, the first person to fly solo over the Tasman crash-landed. Follow the coast through several small towns before catching a glimpse of the Franz Josef glacier as you arrive in the town centre.

Franz Josef is a small but lively town in the heart of the West Coast, known for its 12 km long glacier. Surrounded by lush rainforest-clad mountains the township has a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. Hello, we are going to Queenstown in August. May I ask how long is the helicopter flight - glacier landing is? Do we have time to have a walk on the glacier? Will we see the green-blue ice there? Thank you.

The helicopter flight from Queenstown and glacier landing is 50 minutes in duration which allows for about a 5-10 minute landing, so you are flying for about 40 minutes in the helicopter. You probably wont see the green/blue ice there as you'll need to go to the west coast glaciers (fox or franz josef) to see that. The southern glacier flight from Queenstown however is still very spectacular with stunning views of the lake, mountains and glacier

Hi, may I ask what is the difference between the alpine snow heli-landing tour and the glacier-landing tour? Will both tours have snow landings on top of a peak? I see more pictures of the glacier tour landing near water areas than snow capped ice.

There are a few differences between these two helicopter flights in Queenstown. The Snow Landing flight is only about 20-30 minutes in duration and takes you to the nearest snow capped peak to Queenstown, where as the Glacier Flight is 50 minutes and you fly to an actual Glacier. Both offer the opportunity to get out and walk around for a few minutes on the snow but only the Glacier flight allows you to land and walk on a glacier. There is a big difference in price and this reflects the extra flight time in the helicopter. The Glacier flight is widely regarded as the most scenic flight in the Queenstown area.

Weight limits

Thanks for your question. The maximum combined weight for all the scenic helicopter flights in Queenstown is 470kg total. The helicopter can take up to 6 passengers as long as their combined weight is under 470kg. So essentially there is no maximum weight restriction for individual passengers as long as the total combined weight is under 470kg.

Good day, I would like to book this trip but would like to get an idea of the likelihood of a Glacier landing in Aug (specfically Aug 11 Saturday). Also to confirm that we will be back in time for our 4pm flight to Christchurch on the day? Looking forward to your response!

Hi there. The glacier landing is carried out all year round including summer so you will definitely be landing on a glacier in August. Yes, if you book a morning flight you will be fine for your 4pm flight to Christchurch.

Hi, I am coming to Queenstown for a family function over a weekend from Oz and basically have Friday 22nd June as a free day. If I book my 11yr and I a trip and it doesn't go ahead for bad weather or other reasons do we get a refund. Thanks Wes

Hi there The Southern Glacier helicopter flight in Queenstown operates on demand every day of the year so we can schedule a flight to suit your needs. A common departure time would be 9am or 3pm however this is flexible.

Hi there. Do you arrange for pick ups from Arrowtown - where I am likely to be staying? If it turns out that I'm the only person booked for a particular flight (time and day) do you still fly with one passenger? I will have limited time in the Q/town area. How far in advance does it pay to book?

Hi there. Unfortunately none of the activity operators pick up from Arrowtown as its 20 minutes drive from Queenstown. If you are able to get to Queenstown then you can get picked up from there or you can make your own way to the helicopter base located at Queenstown airport. All Queenstown helicopter flights do require minimum numbers to operate and if you are the only passenger then the flight will not go ahead. If this is the case then you will be given the option of going on a different flight that is confirmed, rescheduling to a different day or receiving a full refund. The helicopter flights in Queenstown are very popular in summer and winter and are often booked out, especially in winter when the helicopters are predominantly used for heliskiing. I'd suggest booking as soon as you know which day and time you want to travel. This will also help to ensure your flight goes ahead as it will allow other people to book on and confirm the flight.

We are coming to NZ in October - do you guarantee landing on a glacier?

Hi Mary. The glacier helicopter flight operates all year in Queenstown. If the weather is poor and there is low cloud or rain then the flight will not go ahead. If this is the case then you can reschedule for another day or receive a full refund. If the flight does go ahead then you will definitely land on a glacier.

Hai, Myself with my family are planning to visit queensland by the last week of may.Is this activity open at that time?especially snow landing.Your information would be helpful.Thanx in advance.

Hi Aju, the Queenstown glacier landing flight is available all year round so you can most definitely do this at the end of May.

How long do you get to spend on the Glacier. and is there any hiking up on.

Hi Jean, you will spend about 10-15 minutes on the glacier during the Glacier Landing Helicopter Flight. The time is generally determined by the weather and the people on the flight as to how long they want to spend there. You can walk around on the glacier but there is no need to do any hiking. Alternatively, if you wanted to do a heli hike it is offerend at the Franz Josef glacier on the West Coast. Check out the following link for more information Franz Josef Heli Hike

After a morning tea break in Makarora on the border of Mount Aspiring World Heritage Park, you’ll travel through the Haast Pass, journeying through native beech forest and over the Southern Alps, before emerging on the West Coast. This remote area has a ruggedly beautiful landscape of vast rainforests, gushing waterfalls and snow-capped mountains.

Skirt the coast and see waves crashing on rocky beaches before returning inland. Pass tree-fringed lakes and stop at a boutique salmon farm on the Paringa River for afternoon tea, before arriving in the afternoon at the small village of Franz Josef. From here you can explore the world famous Franz Josef Glacier.

The German explorer Julius von Haast named the Franz Josef Glacier after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, it is approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) long. During your tiem in Franz Josef you can explore its spectacular scenery with one of the many local guiding companies or opt for a flightseeing tour via helicopter or plane.

Step aboard your luxury sightseeing tour coach and begin your journey with breathtaking scenery of high mountain peaks and crystal-clear blue lakes. Along the way your driver guide will provide commentary on this unique region. Pass man-made Lake Dunstan outside Cromwell, beautiful Lake Wanaka and its neighbouring Lake Hawea, and take a morning tea break at Makarora, a small settlement at the foot of Mount Shrimpton, where the Otago and West Coast regions meet.

Entering Mount Aspiring National Park, we follow the historic route used by Māori as they travelled across the Southern Alps in search of pounamu (greenstone). Journey through the Haast Pass, the southernmost pass between the South Island’s two coasts, enjoying views of native beech forest, waterfalls and glacier-fed rivers.

Arriving on the West Coast, we enter an awe-inspiring landscape of vast rainforests, crystal clear waterfalls and rugged mountain tops. As we wind our way along the rocky coastline, the formidable peaks, moody blue rivers and the powerful surf create the perfect escape. Here you will discover an isolated and tranquil part of New Zealand.

Your one-way tour concludes as we reach the small village of Fox Glacier, set against the lush green rainforest and your base for exploration of this fascinating natural phenomenon. The Fox Glacier is a moving river of ice approximately 13 kilometres (8.1 miles) long, enclosed by sheer rock walls and soaring mountain peaks. You can speak to your driver for details about guided tours of the glacier.
