Review: The Full Monty

full monty tour york

Wed 18 Oct 2023  @ 12:55pm Sally Langton Things to do

Ready to bear all? Well the Grand Opera House is – as the cast of The Full Monty take to the York stage for one week only!

Simon Beaufoy offers a faithful adaptation of the 1997 BAFTA award-winning film celebrating its 25th anniversary – and it’s a party you don’t want to miss.

The Full Monty is at Grand Opera House York from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 October .

full monty tour york

The story follows an unlikely group of men on their journey to be Sheffield’s answer to The Chippendales, however other than the fact they are both planning to strip, the comparisons end there.

The lovable Gaz (Danny Hatchard), the group’s ringleader and instigator takes them on the rollercoaster journey as he uses this one night only event as the solution to financially supporting his son Nathan (Theo Hills) and remaining in his life. Those that join him on this adventure have their own plethora of problems that arise from broken relationships, mental health and lack of self-confidence to their shared hatred for life on the unemployment line.

Yet despite all of this, and the underlying social and political undertones, this really is a laugh out loud comedy to be enjoyed by an extremely wide demographic.

Credit must go to Marc Frankum CDG for his brilliant casting. Each of the men are so uniquely different yet so strong when united together, making their brotherhood something for the audience to delight in. Danny Hatchard’s Gaz was as cheeky as ever and I particularly enjoyed his relationship with Dave (Neil Hurst); I truly believed in their lifelong friendship.

One of the most heartfelt scenes and stand-out acting performances must go to Hurst and his onstage wife Jean (Katy Dean) as they brought sincerity and honesty to the stage – after all there is nothing better than someone accepting you for who you really are, imperfections and all!

full monty tour york

After a long wait from an eager crowd Jake Quickenden and his abs were not to be missed when they made their memorable appearance at the end of act one. He was welcomed onto the stage with the loudest of cheers and he remained a fan favourite throughout.

Whilst the entire cast were fantastic, it was Nathan (Theo Hills) and Gerald (Bill Ward) who I feel offered the most outstanding performances. Hills played the adorable yet mature Nathan perfectly as despite being a young child, he showed true grit and determination when the others lost focus.

Ward’s portrayal of gnome-loving Bill was phenomenal as he took on the most turbulent storyline of all, from his devastating losses to his growing charisma, you couldn’t help but root for him!

As the safety curtain rose, we were transported back to Sheffield and its post-industrial era with a set consisting of scaffolding, which acted as jigsaw pieces in the story. Whilst I enjoyed its many uses as it transported us from location to location, accompanied by an abundance of well chosen tracks, I did feel that these changes lacked fluidity at times. However this could simply be the challenge of performing it for the first time at a new venue, and it didn’t take away from an otherwise quality production.

full monty tour york

In the words of director Michael Gyngell, ‘the production is about more than stripping’ – and whilst that is true and the show carried a gritty social commentary and heavy topics, it also did lead to the most anticipated final 10 minutes of the show and did not disappoint!

Whether you love a dad-bod or you grabbed a ticket for Quickenden’s six-eight-I-lost-count pack, there’s something for everyone at this show and it really is a firm favourite – a show that makes you proud to be British, and more specifically Northern!

Will the men really only leave their hats on? Well there’s only one way to find out! Don’t miss out on The Full Monty at the Grand Opera House York until Saturday 21 October.

Tickets start from £16 and are available here .

THE FULL MONTY THE BROADWAY MUSICAL

March 26 - may 19, 2024, comedy, musical, pop-rock, a boisterous, pop-rock-musical send-up of gender expectations and stereotypes... that takes it all off..

While spying on their wives at a "Girls' Night Out," a group of unemployed steelworkers sees how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous, out of work and feeling emasculated, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally. As they conquer their fears, self-consciousness and prejudices, the men come to discover that they're stronger as a group, and the strength that they find in each other gives them the individual courage to "let it go".

With a mix of razor-sharp humor and pizazz, this heartwarming, upbeat comedy is filled with honest affection, engaging melodies and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show.

Will these lovable misfits really pull it off?

From the unemployment line to the self-made man,
The Full Monty bares it all! The Full Monty is a side-splitting musical that follows Jerry, Dave and pals, part of a group of unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, New York. With their backs to the wall, they decide to create a male strip show to help pay their mortgages and provide for their families after layoffs.

Facing economic — and in some cases personal — disaster, and their insecurities, these taboo-busting boys bare their souls and their bodies. Thanks to a hearty blue-collar work ethic, they happily abandon the daily unemployment grind for a different kind of grind, stripping off the layers of toxic masculinity to reflect the true ingenuity of the American spirit — gettin’ it done!

Throw any old thing on top of your birthday suit, and join us for this empowering tale that proves the naked truth that anything can be accomplished with the right mix of friends and courage. The songs in this 10-time Tony Award nominee capture the spirit of the ’90s, delivering the goods with songs like “You Rule My World” and inspiring lyrics in “Breeze Off the River”.

The Full Monty delivers a feel-good experience that challenges stereotypes and celebrates the triumph of the human spirit.

A working-class musical that works for tips!

Professor monty noam penkower honored for “after the holocaust", touro professor awarded 2023 bernard lewis book prize by the association for the study of the middle east and asia.

Monty Noam Penkower

Professor Monty Noam Penkower, a professor emeritus of Jewish history at the Machon Lander Graduate School of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, was one of four recipients of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Asia (ASMEA) 2023 Bernard Lewis book prize for “After the Holocaust,” published by Touro University Press. He was presented with the award on November 5 at the ASMEA’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.

“After the Holocaust” examines how the survivors contended with life following the Shoah, when a third of world Jewry had been obliterated by Nazi Germany and the need for Jewish sovereignty in their ancestral homeland was undeniable. In accepting the award from his home in Jerusalem, Prof. Penkower said that it meant even more to him in light of recent events.

“Aware of the pioneering, scholarly contribution made by the late Prof. Lewis in alerting our world to the dangers of radical Islamism,” Prof. Penkower said, “I am particularly moved to accept this award at a time when Israel continues its war with Hamas, a terrorist adversary guilty of unprecedented atrocities against civilians and committed to the State of Israel’s annihilation.”

ASMEA is “an academic society dedicated to promoting the highest standards of research and teaching in Middle Eastern and African studies, and related fields,” according to its website, and the Bernard Lewis Prize, named after ASMEA’s founding chairman, is awarded to scholars engaged in the study of antisemitism, which was of great importance to Prof. Lewis.

“Professor Penkower’s volume features his characteristically meticulous research in archival sources, insightful analysis of historical figures and events, masterfully clear  prose and passionate engagement with the history of the Jewish people,” said Dr. Michael Shmidman, dean of Touro’s Graduate School of Jewish Studies.

The former Victor J. Selmanowitz Professor of Modern Jewish History at Touro University in New York, Prof. Penkower was one of Touro’s earliest full-time faculty members, having taught at the school’s Manhattan and Brooklyn divisions for both men and women since 1974. Upon moving to Israel in July 2002, he taught modern Jewish history at Touro's Graduate School of Jewish Studies’ Israel branch campus for five years before retiring from academic teaching.

Prof. Penkower has lectured widely on American history and on modern Jewish history, and his numerous publications include “The Jews Were Expendable: Free World Diplomacy and the Holocaust,” (1983), a National Jewish Book Award finalist and recipient of the B’nai B’rith A.D.L. Merit for Educational Distinction. “The Jews Were Expendable” also earned Prof. Penkower the Samuel Belkin Memorial Literary Award from Yeshiva University, together with his 1986 work, “The Emergence of Zionist Thought.” Especially noteworthy is Prof. Penkower’s five-volume study, four of which were published by the Touro University Press, of the rise of the State of Israel in the years 1933-1948.

His newest book, “The Holocaust and Israel Restored: From Rupture to Revival,” will be published by the Touro University Press in 2024.

Fox will show a new side — or rather, all sides — of a group of male celebrities in an upcoming special.

The network has signed up Anthony Anderson , Taye Diggs , NFL All-Pro Chris Jones, Tyler Posey, Dancing With the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli and James Van Der Beek to take part in The Real Full Monty . The two-hour special, set to air in the fall, will raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research — and end with the troupe performing a striptease act.

“Don’t die of embarrassment. Get checked! That’s the message behind  The Real Full Monty  special,” said Anderson, who’s also an executive producer. “I am honored to lead the charge of rallying these fearless men to bare it all, in order to provoke, inspire and, in this case, beg you to get screened for cancer. That’s  our  goal…so what are  you  waiting for?”

Fox describes the special thus: “Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big striptease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award winner Mandy Moore, where they will bare all in front of a live audience. Leading up to the final disrobing, the men will push their limits of comfortability, modesty and brotherhood with a series of rehearsals and experiences, both private and public, designed to build confidence and remove them far from their comfort zone and strengthen their bond as a group. Along the way, each of the celebrities will share their personal stories of how cancer has impacted their lives.”

U.K. production company Spun Gold TV, which is behind the British specials, is producing The Real Full Monty with Fox Alternative Entertainment. Anderson executive produces with Dan Norris, showrunner Ashley Edens and Spun Gold’s Nick Bullen and Daniela Neumann. Spun Gold is part of the 53 Degrees Global Group.

50 Cent's Final Lap Tour Makes History, Becoming Only Third Rap Trek Ever to Cross $100M

Trending on billboard.

Young said the band had rehearsed for 23 days leading up to the tour, and it clearly paid off. Musically, Young and Horse were as simpatico and incendiary as ever, stretching out on auditory odysseys like “Cortez the Killer” and “Powderfinger,” chugging through the blunt thump of “Cinnamon Girl” and feeding off each other during the oil industry takedown “Vampire Blues.” (Speaking of “Cortez,” Young and Crazy Horse’s new release, Dume , is a reworked version of 1975’s Zuma using shelved material from those sessions; Young paid tribute to that album’s producer, the late David Briggs, during the show, saying, “We like to think about him — it centers us a little bit.”)

The rain didn’t put a damper on the evening, but unfortunately, a few sound issues did. During Young’s solo acoustic portion toward the end of the set, the sound cut out entirely during “Human Highway”; when it came back, Young gamely restarted the song, only to have it drop out again. He made the right choice to solider on, bring out the full band and tackle “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” — but unfortunately, the audio issues persisted. As the sound faded in and out on that cataclysmic rocker, it was almost like listening to a vinyl record using a sound system on the fritz; one moment the noise level is pummeling you, the next moment all you can hear is the small sound made from the needle raking over the record’s groove.

Undeterred, Young and Crazy Horse returned for a problem-free encore that gave audiences a crackling “Sedan Delivery” and a cathartic “Rockin’ in the Free World.” It’s been a long time since Neil was young, but with Crazy Horse at his side, you can almost believe him on “Powderfinger” when he sings, “And I just turned 22.”

Who Is Robert Fico, the Slovakian Prime Minister?

Much of the recent international discussion of Mr. Fico’s leadership has focused on his ties to President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary.

Prime Minister Robert Fico in a suit.

By Matthew Mpoke Bigg

  • May 15, 2024

Robert Fico, 59, has played a pivotal role in Slovakian politics in the years since it gained independence in 1993 and has served as prime minister longer than any other leader.

Slovakia — a landlocked country of around 5 million people — gained independence after the so-called Velvet Revolution, a series of popular and nonviolent protests in 1989 against the Communist Party in what was at that time still Czechoslovakia. That year, the Berlin Wall fell, Communist power in much of Eastern Europe collapsed and the Cold War in effect ended.

Mr. Fico, who had been a Communist Party member while it was in power, founded the Smer party in the late 1990s. He began the first of his three terms as prime minister in 2006, serving for four years before going into opposition after his coalition lost an election. Mr. Fico returned to power in 2012 but resigned as prime minister in July 2018 following mass demonstrations over the murder of a journalist, Jan Kuciak, and his fiancée, Martina Kusnirova, who had been uncovering government corruption. The protests, which rocked the country, were the largest seen since the Velvet Revolution; demonstrators demanded the resignation of the government and new elections.

Slovakia ranks high in independent assessments of press freedom, but the protesters had also sought deeper changes in the country Mr. Fico had overseen.

The Smer party started out on the political left but has increasingly embraced right-wing views on immigration and cultural issues. Much of the international discussion of Mr. Fico’s leadership in recent years has focused on his ties to President Vladimir Putin of Russia and to Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, Slovakia’s southern neighbor. Like Mr. Orban, Mr. Fico has been a staunch critic of the European Union.

After a parliamentary election last fall, Mr. Fico began his third term as prime minister, then had heart surgery the next month. He emerged to form a coalition government after securing around 23 percent of the vote, having campaigned against sanctions that were imposed on Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Not one round of the country’s ammunition should be sent to Ukraine, he had told voters.

That stance, in a country where pro-Russian sentiment had historically been significant, worried E.U. leaders in Brussels, who said they feared that Slovakia could form a pro-Russian alliance with Mr. Orban and, potentially, Italy’s leader, Giorgia Meloni, that would impede support for Ukraine in the European Union. At the time, it was also seen as a sign of the apparent erosion of the pro-Ukrainian bloc that Europe had formed after the invasion.

Slovakia’s military contributions to Ukraine were negligible compared with countries such as the United States and Britain. But last year it became one of several European Union countries on Ukraine’s borders to block imports of its grain, fearing that it could undermine Slovakia’s farmers.

In April, an ally of Mr. Fico, Peter Pellegrini, won a vote to become Slovakia’s president. The position is largely ceremonial, but analysts said the victory strengthened the grip of political forces friendly to Russia in Central Europe, given that Mr. Pellegrini opposed providing military and financial aid to Ukraine.

Mr. Fico was born on Sept. 15, 1964, into a working-class family in the city of Topolcany in the Nitra Region of what is now Slovakia. He graduated in 1986 from Comenius University Bratislava, where he received a law degree, according to the Slovak government’s website . He earned a doctorate at the Institute of State and Law at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and served in the military from 1986 to 1987.

Mr. Fico studied in the United States, Britain, Finland, Belgium and France, specializing in human rights and criminal law, according to the government website. He married Svetlana Ficova, a lawyer and professor, and they have a son. News reports in Slovakia say the couple is separated.

An earlier version of this article misspelled the given name of Italy’s leader. She is Giorgia Meloni, not Georgia.
