6 Captivating Colorado Castles to See

March 29, 2021 By //  by  Jules Marie

Who knew that Colorado had so many castles? A day trip touring the myriad of enchanting Colorado Castles is a chance to experience the royalty and grandeur of the late 1800s.

There are castles of varying architecture and age, from recently built in within the last one hundred years, and those that are far older. The oldest castles actually lie in the southwest part of the state. Built by the Ancient Puebloan people, these architectural areas are year round places to visit. They contain ruins of old mesa top villages and cliff dwellings.

There are many other historic manmade landmarks located around the state. So keep your eyes peeled next time you’re road tripping. These castles are situated throughout Colorado, with many up and down the Front Range. Others lie in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Some are open to the public to visit, others are private residences that do not permit visitors. One cool private castle that can only be enjoyed from the roadside , pictured above, is Cano’s Castle . It’s located in Antonito, which is a historic train town in southern Colorado.

Here are the top castles in Colorado , in no particular order:

1. Miramont Castle, Manitou Springs

Miramont Castle Manitou Springs Colorado

Love architectural variety? Then visit the 14,000 sq. ft. Miramont Castle located in Manitou Springs . Built by Father Jean Baptiste Francolon in 1895 the house is an eclectic estate that’s a mixture of nine architectural styles, including Byzantine, Tudor, Gothic, Medieval and Victorian.

Rarely does one of the 40 rooms have four square corners with many having eight-sided and 16-sided rooms. It’s said that Father Francolon was concerned with the unrest in France at the time and his castle bears many hidden tunnels, escape routes and secret compartments.

Daily tours of the castle are given and visitors can view 30 rooms decked out in authentic Victorian furnishings. Hot tea is served in the Queen’s Parlour Tearoom, and Victorian and modern day fare is served daily. Today, the towering castle boasts a grand ballroom, soaring towers, bridges with 100-mile vistas and even a fire-breathing dragon. The castle in Rye is always open and free of charge but best to check their website before visiting.

Glen Eyrie Castle in Colorado Springs

Glen Eyrie Castle is a 67-room English Tudor-style castle built by General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs.

This house was his dream home and is in the northwest foothills north of the Garden of the Gods Park . After building a large carriage house, where the family lived for a time, Palmer and his wife Mary (Queen) Mellen built a 22-room frame house on the 800-acre estate. This house was remodeled in 1881 to include a tower, 24 fireplaces and additional rooms and made to resemble a stone castle, reminiscent of those native to England – where Mrs. Palmer lived at the end of her life.

Glen Eyrie Castle is now owned by The Navigators, a Christian organization headquartered in Colorado Springs. The general public is allowed on its grounds Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. to visit the bookstore, located at the Carriage House. Tours of Glen Eyrie Castle are available to the public and require an advance reservation. HIKERS: Due to the destruction of the Waldo Canyon Fire, the danger to hikers at Glen Eyrie is too great to allow the public on our trails. NO PUBLIC HIKING will be permitted on Glen Eyrie property until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Glen Eyrie Castle is also a conference and retreat center that puts on many Christian conferences and programs. The property in the enclosed valley is also available for use by groups for meetings, receptions and retreats. Herds of bighorn sheep, deer and wild turkey may often be found grazing on the grounds.

How Many Castles Are in Colorado?

Colorado is home to 20 castles, but only 14 remain standing. All but four are open to the public, including a castle that houses a church, a castle that one man built over the last 60 years, and one castle of beer cans and scrap metal.

It’s an eclectic collection, but a trip to visit them would be an adventure fit for royalty.

What Is the Famous Castle in Colorado?

Each castle available for tours is famous, so choosing one over another is virtually impossible. Many might select Bishop’s Castle because of its origin, while others love Glen Erie because of its size and the grounds around it.

Those who favor building within a budget may endorse using salvage material in the construction of Cano’s Castle. Visiting any of the castles in Colorado can provide a sense of awe.

Who Owns Bishop Castle?

The owner of Bishop’s Castle near Rye, Colorado, is Jim Bishop. He’s the man who started its construction almost 60 years ago. He purchased the land for $450 at 15 years old in 1959.

He planned to build a family cabin, and he and his father camped on the property for ten summers, clearing land for the foundation. But by 1969, Jim began work on a one-room stone cabin that had become an enormous rock and iron castle, complete with a dragon.

Best Castles in Colorado to Visit

There are fourteen castles still standing in Colorado, and it was a tough choice to select seven. They are all fascinating structures. Take a look at the ones we’ve listed below and see if you agree that these castles in Colorado are fit for royalty.

Bishop Castle

12705 State Highway 165, Rye, Colorado  81069

About:  In a dense forest at 9,000 feet in altitude, Bishop’s Castle is a fantastic accomplishment. Jim Bishop began work on what he planned to be a one-room stone cabin in 1969.

Today, his continuous labor is now a 3-story castle with a ballroom, several towers and bridges, and a fire-breathing dragon. With a 30-foot-tall steel steeple, Bishop’s Castle is 160 feet tall, the equivalent of a 16-story building.

The unique stone exterior of the ver-growing Bishop Castle in Colorado.

How to Visit:  Bishop’s Castle is always open and has free admission! It is Jim’s goal to make his creation available to all. You may even catch him adding more spiral staircases, stained glass, or stone walls to this fantastic testimony to one man’s dream.

Glen Eyrie Castle

3820 N. 30th Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado  80904

About:  Railroad engineer and founder of Colorado Springs, General William Jackson Palmer, built this structure for his wife in 1871. Glen Eyrie didn’t become a castle until 32 years later. He added a tower in 1903 as a memorial to his wife. General Palmer did not enjoy this 67-room castle for very long, dying in 1909 due to a riding accident three years prior.

Today Glen Eyrie sits in the hands of The Navigators, a Christian organization with its publishing arm. The castle is open for high teas, conferences, and overnight lodging. Guests can participate in a tour of the castle and grounds.

How to Visit:  Visitors must have a reservation for a tea, conference, or lodging to access the 800-acre estate. Once on the property, a free tour is available throughout the day.

Miramont Castle

9 Capitol Hill Avenue, Manitou Springs, Colorado 80829

About:  In 1895, Father Jean Baptiste Francolon built one of the many stunning castles in Colorado. Miramont Castle combines several architectural styles.

The owner moved to Manitou, bringing an eclectic selection of furnishings, vestments, and artwork. He left many of these items behind when he and his mother left the state five years later.

The Sisters of Mercy used the grounds to run a sanitarium for many years, but today the castle hosts a museum, tea room, and gift shop. Also, it’s reputedly haunted!

An old water fountain at the Miramont Castle in Colorado with a water stream coming out of the mouth of a creatre.

How to Visit:  Enjoy Victorian tea by reservation, then wander through the castle museum. Virtually every room is open for your perusal!

Traveler’s Tip: Don’t miss a chance to drive the most haunted road in America while you’re exploring Colorado.

Mount Falcon Castle

3852 Vine Street, Morrison, Colorado  80465

About:  John Brisben Walker was an investor in the Stanley Steamer steam-powered automobiles and owned Cosmopolitan Magazine before moving to the Front Range of Colorado. He built a 10-bedroom mansion with eight fireplaces and an observation deck in 1909.

Sadly, Mr. Walker only enjoyed his home for nine years before lightning struck and burned the estate. Today, a few stone spires remain at the site.

Walker had bigger dreams that also fell by the wayside with the fire. He hoped to build “the Summer White House” near his castle, enticing future presidents to spend the summer months on this beautiful hillside in Colorado. All that lingers is the cornerstone stating, “Summer home for the Presidents of the United States – the gift of the people of Colorado 1911.”

How to Visit:  The land where Walker’s castle remains belongs to the city of Denver and is the foundation for the Denver Mountain Parks Department. You must hike the “Castle Trail” to see John Brisben Walker’s efforts.

Cherokee Ranch and Castle

6113 N. Daniels Park Road, Sedalia, Colorado 80135

About:  Beginning life as Charlford Castle in 1926, Cherokee Ranch Castle was constructed as a Scottish residence for the Johnson Family. In 1954 when the land changed hands, the castle sat on ranching property with Santa Gertrudis cattle. Today the castle overlooks prime ranch land and a wildlife sanctuary, while conferences, weddings, and teas are within the castle walls.

How to Visit:  Take a 90-minute castle tour or participate in programs on castle grounds, like concerts, guided hikes, archaeological tours, whiskey tastings, and specialty brunches.

Redstone Castle

58 Redstone Boulevard, Redstone, Colorado  81623

About: John C. Osgood, the founder of Colorado Fuel and Iron, built Redstone Castle in 1903. It is in a somewhat remote location near the Crystal River. Its 42 rooms overlook the river and several mountains in the White River National Forest.

With 24,000 square feet, there is ample room to explore. Today the castle is a wellness center, offering retreats specializing in weight loss, high altitude training, culinary skills, and outdoor adventures.

Redstone Castle, Colorado

How to Visit:  Redstone Castle offers private and public tours. Costs range from $50 to $500 for the one-and-a-half-hour guided historical tours.

Cano’s Castle

10th Avenue and State Street, Antonito, Colorado  81120

About:  A folk art castle of recycled materials sits in a small southern Colorado town. Dominic (Cano) Espinoza began building his castle in 1980 as a thank you for returning from the Vietnam War.

The folk art style Cano's Castle in Colorado is made of recycled metals, stone, and more.

The grounds contain four structures he made from beer cans, salvaged metal, native volcanic stone, and other scavenged materials. With two gleaming towers, Cano’s Castle has five sections. Regrettably, fire heavily damaged one portion earlier this year, but most of the castle remains.

How to Visit:  You can’t tour Cano’s Castle, but visitors are welcome to view it from the street. If you’re lucky, Cano will show up to talk with you, as he lives across the street from his creation.

Westminster Castle

3455 W. 83rd Avenue, Westminster, Colorado  80031

About:  This red sandstone castle was built in 1893 by Henry T. Mayhem. Some call the castle the Pillar of Fire. Henry had a dream to start a Presbyterian school out west that would rival Princeton University. The plan didn’t go well, as the school was open only nine years before World War I began, and the enrollment dropped to zero.

Other schools filled the hallways over the years, and today it is home to Belleview Christian Schools and a radio station.

How to Visit:  Because it is a working school, there are no tours. However, the stunning architecture of Westminster Castle overlooking Denver is worth the trip.

Redstone Castle was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and provides a unique glimpse into the personal styles and social culture of America’s elite at the turn of the 20th Century. Built in the Tudor style, the Castle is filled with the finest furnishings of the period: wooden paneling designed by Gustav Stickley, intricately cast brass globe lights created by Louis Tiffany and countless pieces of furniture and artwork collected by the Osgoods on their frequent trips to Europe.

I learned about Miramont Castle when I moved here last summer from my friend Ashley.  She has lived in Colorado all her life and took me into Manitou Springs to show me around. Once she showed me Miramont Castle, I immediately became interested in learning all about it! It is a very facinating place!

Colorado’s Most Charming Towns for a Summer Escape

Whether you’re looking to relax fireside under the stars at a luxury mountain resort or experience some of the best hiking in the Rockies, here’s where to explore in Colorado this summer.

castle tours colorado

Despite being one of the most popular skiing and snowboarding destinations in the country , Colorado provides a picturesque escape for travelers seeking a summer in the mountains . The pine-covered peaks, crystal clear lakes and charming villages come to life in the summer, allowing you to enjoy crisp mountain air and temperate weather. Though scattered thunderstorms are common throughout the warmest time of year, skies are predominantly sunny, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors and all of Colorado’s adventurous activities.

From mountain biking to hiking, taking in the vibrant greenery and wild blooms in the summer is a stark but stunning contrast to the snow-covered landscape that draws so many visitors in the winter. While high-end towns like Aspen and Vail boast breathtaking surroundings and high-end restaurants and accommodations, smaller locales like Telluride offer a truly immersive and small-town mountain retreat. If you’re hoping to experience the more artsy side of Colorado, Cherry Creek is a special community in Denver that is home to unique art galleries and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival . Whether you’re looking to relax fireside under the stars at a luxury mountain resort or experience some of the best hiking in the Rockies, follow this guide to Colorado’s most charming towns for a summer escape.

Located at the base of Vail Mountain, this quaint valley town is surrounded by the White River National Forest, providing the perfect blend of rural and luxury living. Walk through glimmering Aspen trees on the Upper Piney River Falls trail or hike the Lost Lake Trail for epic views of Beaver Creek and the Gore Range vistas. On the weekends, indulge in French fare at Vintage before catching a concert at Vail’s Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater . Matsuhisa is the perfect place to cure your craving for sushi, but if you’re in the mood for a post-hike cocktail at sunset, grab a bar stool at Root & Flower and sip on the unique Cadillac Desert, which is a sage & citrus infused tequila martini.

Where to Stay:

The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail is just steps away from Vail Mountain, placing guests in the heart of nature. Enjoy unparalleled access to beautiful hiking and biking trails or take advantage of the heated pool and hot tubs. The Hythe Vail , a Luxury Collection property, offers more modern accommodations and encourages guests to unwind by the retro fireplace in the lobby or indulge in a massage at the on-site Well & Being Spa.

With a population of less than 3,000, Telluride is a box canyon town with a unique history. Formerly a Victorian mining town, the tiny destination has everything from towering peaks to a charming Main Street where locals go to shop, eat, drink and mingle. The surrounding San Juan Mountains are a hotspot for hikers and mountain bikers looking to brave treacherous yet idyllic peaks, but there are also plenty of lakes and ponds where you can swim or paddle board. The panoramic, mountainous background from Main Street is out of this world, but nothing beats the views from Allred’s Restaurant. Stop by Historic Bar for a nightcap at Telluride’s oldest bar, which has remained untouched since 1895.

Between the earthy interiors and show-stopping views, Auberge's Madeline Hotel & Residences offers a cozy respite from the outside world. The alpine-inspired rooms and suites boast five-star comfort, while the on-site Timber Room is home to one of the coolest cocktail programs in town. For more private accommodations, book one of the luxury log cabins at Mountain Lodge Telluride.

Cherry Creek

Though it is technically a neighborhood within Denver, Cherry Creek feels like its own destination entirely. In addition to its bustling shopping scene, it is also home to some of the best restaurants in Denver. Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge is a Pan-Asian restaurant that serves innovative sushi rolls, Argentinian-style steaks, tasty tacos and more, while Blue Island Oyster Bar and Seafood serves some of the freshest seafood that you’ll find in this land-locked state. Art fanatics should pay a visit to Relévant Galleries , which showcases pieces by acclaimed photographer David Yarrow. If you visit during the first week of July, be sure to buy tickets to the Cherry Creek Arts Festival , which features over 250 juried artists.

Hotel Clio features 193 guest rooms and six suites. Enjoy a zesty margarita in the chic lobby before walking to some of the best shopping in the area, including boutiques and big brand-name stores. Halcyon, a Hotel in Cherry Creek is another solid option that boasts a hip rooftop pool and 154 contemporary rooms and suites.

castle tours colorado

Aspen is a quintessential Colorado town known for its celebrity residents, renowned restaurants and luxurious accommodations. Though there is plenty to do in downtown Aspen, from shopping designer handbags at Prada to visiting the Aspen Art Museum , the outdoor activities are what make Aspen such a hotspot for travelers. Experience the crystal clear waters at the Stillwater section of the Roaring Fork River, which is perfect for swimming and paddle boarding. When it comes to hiking, Maroon Bells Scenic Trail lets you soak in a scene of wildflowers around Alpine Lake. Not sure where to dine? Prospect , White House Tavern and Las Montañas should all be at the top of your list.

There’s no shortage of lavish hotels in Aspen, but in true Auberge fashion, Hotel Jerome is one of the best. This historic hotel is a local landmark and has been around since 1889, boasting vintage vibes and antique decor that creates an elevated and transportive ambiance. The Little Nell is another award-winning property that remains Aspen’s only Forbes Five-Star and Five-Diamond resort.

Colorado Springs

Trade in pine-covered mountains for red sandstone rocks when you visit Colorado Springs in the summer. The iconic Garden of the Gods is the most popular park in Colorado Springs, boasting more than 1,300 acres of public space. Nature lovers flock to this bucket-list sight every year, and though you can explore by foot at your leisure, you can also book a Jeep, Segway or e-bike tour. After a long day of hiking and adventuring, sit down for a dirty martini and shrimp cocktail at Bonny & Read Seafood before ending the night with stargazing.

Between its grandiose, European-inspired exterior and its five-star service, the Broadmoor is the most lavish property in Colorado Springs. The crystal chandeliers, antique paintings and marble fireplaces in the guest rooms and suites curate a setting that is reminiscent of a palace, but with an endless array of on-property amenities like a spa, golf course and indoor and outdoor pools, you probably won’t find yourself in your room all that often.
