Welcome to the Midwest

America's vast midwestern region, in the heart of the United States... where time has stood still on charming Mackinac Island... where the beauty of Lake Michigan is enhanced by the glacially carved dunes... and further west where the largest stone carving in the world exists, Crazy Horse Monument... and to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where a larger than life presidential memorial pays tribute to four former US presidents.

Lake michigan, meet mighty lake michigan.

The second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume (after Lake Superior) and third-largest by surface area (after Lake Huron), Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes completely inside the US. Since the 19th century, Lake Michigan has played a pivotal role in shipping, transportation and trade across the US, and helped Chicago become a dominant force in the Midwest and throughout the country. Some 12 million people live along its shores, and depend on the lake not only for its commercial and transportation value, but for its scenic beauty, the dunes and beaches along its shorelines, and the myriad recreation opportunities it offers.

The Henry Ford

Innovation is the word at the henry ford in dearborn.

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village – a.k.a. "The Henry Ford" – is an award-winning, state-of-the-art museum in Dearborn, Michigan, founded by industrialist Henry Ford. Its interactive exhibits are dedicated to innovation – not just in machines, but in trailblazers who shaped the world we live in. Within its nine acres of exhibition space, you can step aboard the Montgomery bus in which civil rights activist Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat; make yourself at home in Buckminster Fuller's autonomous Dymaxion House; discover the science behind Pixar animation and motors that moved the nation; and see the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop, Thomas Edison's laboratory, Igor Sikorsky's prototype helicopter, the house Henry Ford was born in, and the courthouse where Abe Lincoln practiced law! Attached to the complex is Greenfield Village, a fine living museum of Americana.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Step back in time on michigan's mackinac island.

Vehicle-free Mackinac Island – off the Michigan coast in the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron – has been a popular retreat since 19th-century industrialists built imposing summer "cottages" here, and remains serenely lost in time. The only way to get around is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, as you make your way past impeccable Victorian mansions and out to the fringes of forest, marshes, beaches and 19th-century Fort Mackinac. The island is home to the palatial Grand Hotel, which lays claim to the longest porch in the world. Since 1887, the Grand has hosted many presidents, as well as the likes of Mark Twain and Thomas Edison (who first demonstrated his phonograph on the hotel's iconic porch).

Chicago, Illinois

My kind of town, chicago is....

Whether you call it the "Windy City," the "City of Big Shoulders," America's "Second City," or just plain Chicago, this Illinois city at the southern tip of Lake Michigan gained prominence during America's great westward expansion of the 19th century, when it became the growing nation's stockyards and the Midwest's industrial and transportation center… and eventually, one of the largest and most influential cities in the country. Following 1871's disastrous Great Chicago Fire that destroyed much of the city, young architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Mies van der Rohe began transforming Chicago into a thriving modern metropolis for the 20th century and beyond… the city you'll explore with Tauck today.

Our tours offer a luxurious and comfortable travel experience. Coaches stop every 2 to 2½ hours for rest breaks, and exciting roadside and town attractions are planned along the tour route.

When you travel with Heartland Tours, your trip experience will be much more than a simple bus ride. Not only are our motorcoaches clean, comfortable, accommodating for all ages, and wheelchair friendly, they are luxury vehicles with onboard bathrooms, video systems with multiple monitors, reclining seats, headrests, fold-down foot rests, climate control, tinted windows, window shades, individual reading lamps, ventilation, and more.

Each seat includes Wi-Fi, extra leg room, 110v electrical outlets, and more. We’ve outfitted our motorcoaches specifically for a comfortable touring experience.

Environmentally Conscious Bus Tours

In addition to comfort for passengers when on the road, you can also take comfort in our environmentally-friendly coaches. Our buses are fueled with a biodegradable, nontoxic, sulfur- and aromatic-free B20 biodiesel fuel. Motorcoaches are also an average of six times more fuel and energy efficient than single occupancy vehicles like cars. When measuring passenger miles per gallon, motorcoaches with over 50 passengers will still have an efficiency of 350 passenger miles per gallon, compared to the 28 passenger miles per gallon of an average car.

Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by about 85% per passenger mile per person when driving a motorcoach. That’s about three times more efficient reduction of CO2 output compared to commuter trains and cars.

US Midwest Vacations and Tour Packages

bus tours midwest usa

The Midwestern United States, also referred to as the Midwest, consists of 12 states in the north-central United States. Chicago is the most populous city, followed by metropolitan areas such as Metro Detroit and Minneapolis–St. Paul, the “Twin Cities.” Diverse landscapes include sandhill grasslands, deciduous forests, prairie, farmland, two Great Lakes, thousands of smaller lakes, and three important waterways including the Ohio River, the Missouri River, and the Mississippi.

Visitors come to the Midwest for its nature, waterways, wide open spaces, pioneer history and historic landmarks, big-city architecture, affordable attractions, and distinctive culture and arts scenes. Some of the country’s best museums and galleries are here, particularly in Chicago and Detroit. Visitors also come to travel historic Route 66 – and, of course, to experience the friendly people of the Midwest.

GOWAY DESTINATIONS

Plan your next vacation on a luxury tour coach

Family owned and operated, Glenn’s Motorcoach Tours of Southeastern Minnesota has been the premier choice for the highest quality vacation tours, competitive pricing, and professionalism since 1991.

Tour planning is led by Renae, Fred, and the Glenn’s Motorcoach Tours staff. We charter all kinds of groups and sporting events. We have 52-passenger high-end coaches with extra leg room. We accept all major credit cards! Contact us to schedule your next tour!

Glenns Motorcoach Tours is putting every effort into keeping our customers and employees safe by actively ensuring our motor coaches are cleaned and disinfected the best of our ability.

We have started additional cleaning and disinfecting methods. Most important is that if you don’t feel good STAY home!

Our bus cleaners, as well as our Tour Directors and Drivers have been trained on what/how to clean and disinfect the coach. Drivers and Tour Directors will wipe down listed surfaces below at times during the day and at the end of each day as well as mop floor with a disinfectant. Drivers and Tour Directors will make sure hand sanitizer and wipes are available on every trip.

We will also be fogging each coach before it leaves our shop to insure a thorough cleaning and disinfecting on the interior of all coaches. If a driver, tour director or passenger become ill on coach we will decontaminate the coach. Driver/ Tour Director will then contact office and we will determine what needs to be done at that time.

Listed below are what we will give special attention to while cleaning/ disinfecting the Coach:

  • Steering wheel
  • Window sills
  • Restroom handrails and door handles
  • Coach will also be sprayed with Lysol quite often each day

Remember to do the easy things like:

  • Stay away from people who are sick
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use wipes if water not available
  • Make sure to cover your cough or sneeze and throw all tissues away not leaving them on seat
  • Again, most important that if you have any symptoms or don’t feel good stay home

We will get our buses moving as soon as we are able. We are monitoring the situation daily. Also we will be listening to the CDC, United Motorcoach Ass’n and Minnesota Charter Bus Operators Ass’n and make any changes necessary.

7 Best Midwest Road Trips in the US

From the Great Lakes to national monuments and roadside kitsch, a road trip is the best way to explore the Midwest.

Flyover country it is not. The Midwest offers a variety of landscapes, ripe for exploration with a classic road trip . From rolling vineyards to lush river valleys, high limestone bluffs to some pretty great lakes, this region of the United States is often overlooked. It's time to change that, so cue up a playlist, pack your favorite snacks, and hit the road on one of these top Midwest road trips, which are sure to highlight the best of America's pulsing, vibrant heartland.

Wisconsin's Great River Road

Start: Prescott, WI End: Kieler, WI Length: 234 miles

The picturesque city of Prescott, situated where the St. Croix River meets the Mississippi River, makes for a great jumping-off point for this road trip. Start at the Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center and drive south along Wisconsin's 250-mile stretch of the National Scenic Byway, which hugs the Mississippi's curves and bluffs. In addition to pretty views, this area of Wisconsin offers unexpected culinary delights in tiny river towns. Bay City's Chef Shack is worth a stop for its lovely back patio and two James Beard Award-nominated chefs at the helm.

Pepin, Wisconsin, located on the widest natural part of the river — the aptly named Lake Pepin — also deserves some attention. There, check out the Harbor View Cafe , which has been impressing visitors since 1980. Meanwhile, fans of the "Little House on the Prairie" books can visit the birthplace of writer Laura Ingalls Wilder , a roughly 10-minute journey inland from Lake Pepin. Continue along the beautiful highway past La Crosse, Wisconsin, then, consider cutting inward to Viroqua, Wisconsin, via State Highway 14. The rolling hills and pastureland of Vernon County are home to the highest concentration of organic farms in the state. Visit the Driftless Cafe , home to another James Beard Award nominee, for the best farm-to-table fare in the region.

Wine lovers should consider hitting some stops on the Great River Road Wine Trail , especially Danzinger Vineyards on the bluff in Alma. Those who prefer a hoppy beverage can stop at the Potosi Brewery near the end of this road trip. The Great River Road stretches beyond Wisconsin, but Kieler is the last stop before it crosses the border and continues on to Iowa's pretty river city of Dubuque. With a total driving time just under five hours, this trip could be done in a day, but most of the attractions are right at the start. A nice way to break it up into a two-day trip is with an overnight stay near the vineyards.

Indiana's Natural Wonders and Small Towns

Start: Indiana Dunes National Park, IN End: Bloomington, IN Length: 288 miles

Begin at the 15,000-acre Indiana Dunes National Park in northwestern Indiana. Situated on Lake Michigan's beautiful southern shore, this area is perfect for birding, beach time, and other activities in nature. From there, drive to the small lake town of Winona Lake to browse the little shops along the waterfront. For an upscale bite, stop into Cerulean , and for more laidback fare, consider the BoatHouse Restaurant . Spend the night two and a half hours south at The Alexander in downtown Indianapolis, both the capital and largest city in the state.

Explore the city using the Canal Walk , visit the acclaimed Indianapolis Children's Museum , scope out some street art , and enjoy a meal at St. Elmo Steak House . For an extra dose of exercise in the city, check out the Monon Rail Trail , a former rail line that stretches from Indy to the northern suburbs. After your time in the capital city, head south to Bloomington, home to Indiana University. This college town offers both a picturesque campus and a walkable downtown area. Continue on to Brown County State Park , the largest in Indiana, which is open for picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, and more.

You'll be on the road for at least five hours on this trip. Considering that you will want a day or two for exploring all Indianapolis has to offer, the trip should be broken up into two legs at least.

Nebraska's Sandhill Journey

Start: Grand Island, NE End: Bayard, NE Length: 335 miles

Begin your journey in Grand Island, an area that truly shines in the spring with the world's largest sandhill crane migration . From there, follow State Highway 2 to Broken Bow, where you can access information on the route at the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway Visitor Center . Thirsty travelers can imbibe at Kinkaider Brewing Company , which offers a taproom and restaurant in the gateway to the Sandhills.

After indulging responsibly (nominate a designated driver in advance), continue on Highway 2 until you reach the town of Anselmo, where you'll take a slight detour to Victoria Springs State Recreation Area , an oasis known for its healing mineral waters. Here, road-trippers can enjoy activities like paddleboarding, fishing, and picnicking at one of Nebraska's oldest state recreation areas. In the summer season, the park's log cabins make for a fun overnight option and can be reserved up to a year in advance. Pro tip: If you opt for an overnight, be sure to check out the stars without the usual light pollution interference.

End at perhaps the quirkiest attraction on this list, Carhenge , a replica of England's Stonehenge crafted with old cars. Bonus: For those who want a taste of the Oregon Trail, consider a journey to the Chimney Rock National Historic Site in Bayard, less than an hour beyond Alliance.

You'll be on the road for about six hours with this itinerary, with the longest leg being between Anselmo and Alliance. If you take your time at the Sandhills or Victoria Springs, you can break this trip up over two, three, or four days.

Route 66's First Leg

Start: Chicago, IL End: St. Louis, MO Length: 315 miles

Route 66, which runs from Chicago, Illinois , to the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, is a classic, and you can explore a portion of it in the Midwest. Start in the Windy City, after enjoying some of its famous deep-dish pizza. Additionally, you may want to stop for a photo op at the corner of Michigan and Adams, where the historic "Begin Route 66" sign stands. Then, head to nearby Wilmington to see one of the famed Muffler Men statues, the Gemini Giant, near the charming Launching Pad restaurant. From Wilmington, it's a roughly two-hour drive to the Illinois capitol of Springfield, where history buffs will want to check out the numerous Abraham Lincoln sites. Highlights include the Lincoln Home , his Presidential Library and Museum , and the Lincoln Tomb .

Next, journey onward to St. Louis. Travelers can stretch their legs at the famous Chain of Rocks Bridge, which has since been turned into part of the Route 66 Bikeway. The bridge is even on the National Register of Historic Places. End your intro to Route 66 in luxe fashion with an overnight stay at the surprisingly affordable Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis , a short walk from Gateway Arch National Park . The property boasts a tasty eatery with a James Beard Award-winning chef as well as a full spa. Plus, it's close to another must-visit St. Louis attraction for kids: the interactive City Museum .

Getting from Chicago to St. Louis takes approximately five hours. History buffs may want to spend the night in Springfield to make the most of the Lincoln-related attractions, but an afternoon may be sufficient to pay your respects to the late American president.

Minnesota's North Shore

Start: Duluth, MN End: Grand Portage, MN Length: 112 miles

This drive follows the scenic State Highway 61 along Lake Superior's stunning, rocky shores. Part of the Arrowhead Region in northeast Minnesota, this drive belongs on any U.S. road trip bucket list. Begin in Duluth, Minnesota, which is famous for its breweries and native Bob Dylan, who was born in the city and raised in nearby Hibbing. Walk along Bob Dylan Way for a glimpse of the folk music legend and his childhood home. Consider sipping some artisan spirits at Vikre Distillery , which offers views of the famed Aerial Lift Bridge . To pay homage to the region's Scandinavian roots, sample Vikre's aquavit , also known as "Norwegian Everclear."

For an overnight stay, consider checking vacation rental options in pretty Two Harbors; this town is an excellent base for exploring Gooseberry Falls , Minnesota's most visited state park, and Split Rock Lighthouse , one of the most photographed spots in the state. Road-trippers should also plan to fill up on pizza at longtime favorite Sven and Ole's in Grand Marais.

The whole drive will only take you about two hours if you go straight through, so you could do it as a busy day trip from Duluth, or take your time to enjoy the lake over the course of two or three days. From roughly May to October, intrepid explorers can consider an extension to Michigan's remote and gorgeous Isle Royale National Park . Daily ferry transport is available from Grand Portage, Minnesota, the scenic end point of this North Shore excursion. The ferry takes about two hours, and if you want to spend the night you can find a room or go camping in Rock Harbor or Windigo.

South Dakota's Monuments and Scenery

Start: Sioux Falls, SD End: Mount Rushmore, SD Length: 513 miles

Begin in the state's largest city, Sioux Falls, with a walk around pretty Falls Park . Then, drive to nearby Mitchell, just over an hour away, to visit the quirky and fun attraction that is The World's Only Corn Palace . You can stop for the views as you pass by Badlands National Park , or continue on through Rapid City — where you can visit the state's oldest-operating brewery, Firehouse Brewing Company , for a cold beverage — to the ever-enchanting kitsch of historic Deadwood . Even though it's super-touristy, everyone should visit at least once.

Additionally, visitors can see some gorgeous waterfalls, hiking paths, and rock ridges in Spearfish Canyon , which is actually more ancient than the better-known Grand Canyon. Also, try the well-awarded brews at Spearfish Brewing Company . For those who want an additional taste of the winding road, consider some time on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway . From there, go south to the Crazy Horse Memorial in the town of Crazy Horse, which is the biggest mountain carving on Earth and has been under construction for decades.

If the carved faces of Mount Rushmore , South Dakota's most-visited attraction, are your goal, be sure to take your time when driving on a part of the lovely Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway . Outdoorsy types may also enjoy a visit to Custer State Park , the largest in the state.

With over nine hours of driving time to complete this trip from Sioux Falls, you will need a few days on the road. Rapid City and Deadwood are good options for overnight stays — especially if your trips are Rushmore-oriented — unless you prefer to do some camping in the parks.

Michigan's Peninsula

Start: Sault Sainte Marie, MI End: Leland, MI Length: 222 miles

Begin in the small town of Sault Ste. Marie , perched between Lake Superior and Lake Huron and adjacent to its Canadian sister city of the same name. Be sure to sample the beer at Soo Brewing Company , shortened to Soo Brew by locals. Also check out the "lynchpin of the Great Lakes," the Soo Locks , except from January through March, when they are closed for repairs. Nature lovers may consider a detour, heading westward first to Michigan's second-largest state park, Tahquamenon Falls State Park , which boasts over 50,000 acres of pristine wilderness, including one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It will addd about 75 miles to the trip, however.

For an overnight option to break up the drive, stay at the historic Grand Hotel on carless Mackinac Island (Note: Like many of the Island's businesses, the hotel is only open during the island's high season between May and October). Be sure to build in time to try some of this destination's famous fudge, too. The charming island can be accessed via ferry from Mackinaw City (Lower Peninsula) or St. Ignace (Upper Peninsula). After experiencing some of the delights of the Upper Peninsula, cross the one of the world's longest suspension bridges, the Mackinac Bridge, to Michigan's Lower Peninsula, which everyone calls "the mitten" for its shape. Once you cross the bridge, consider a nighttime visit to nearby Headlands International Dark Sky Park , where it's possible to catch a glimpse of the northern lights if you get very lucky with your timing. If not, you'll still enjoy a brilliant display of stars there.

From the preserve, it's just a two-hour winding lakefront drive to Traverse City, known as Michigan's foodie capital, where you should stop and eat at the French-inspired Brasserie Amie . If you have a sweet tooth, cap off your meal with a stop at the wildly popular Grand Traverse Pie Company . End your trip on the gorgeous Leelanau Peninsula , Michigan's answer to Wisconsin's storied Door County. Check out Leland's Fishtown, take the ferry to the Manitou Islands (part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore ), and imbibe at the wineries on the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail .

Not including times spent on ferries, the total driving time for this trip is just under five hours, but with so much to see plan to have lots of time saved for dilly-dallying. Three to five nights are ideal so you can really enjoy this itinerary that touches three out of the five Great Lakes .

A person kayaks in the middle of Lake Superior in Michigan.

The midwest is the US’s surprising new outdoor hotspot

Post-industrial states such as Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and even upstate New York, are seeing a boom in outdoor activities

A t a nondescript mall in Beavercreek, a sleepy suburb in south-west Ohio, workers are unpacking the latest camping equipment, bikes and kayaks ahead of a grand opening of Ohio’s fifth REI co-op location .

Surrounded by farmland and leafy streetscapes in a region that relied on manufacturing and an air force base as its economic lifeblood for decades, Beavercreek and the wider post-industrial midwest might not quickly conjure up images of outdoor bliss.

But industry insiders see it differently: with 23 million members nationwide, REI’s Ohio membership has grown from around 80,000 in 2015 to 400,000 members today.

“There’s a campground right down the street, there’s a state park locally that has bolted top rope routes for climbing, there’s a mountain bike-only park,” says Sam Metcalf, the REI Beavercreek store manager. “You don’t have all that in most cities.”

While outdoor goods stores are closing in metro Los Angeles , San Francisco and Oregon , the post-industrial midwest is emerging as something of a new frontier as communities are figuring out that, with heavy manufacturing now in the rearview mirror, activating their rivers, trails and parklands is a surefire way to boost their economies.

This year REI is set to also open stores in Albany and Ithaca in upstate New York .

Research from the Outdoor Industry Association found that in recent years outdoor recreation participation is growing faster in the midwest and the middle Atlantic region that includes New York state than most other parts of the country.

Data that incorporates Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin , Indiana and Illinois, shows that participation rates have grown by 6% between 2019 and 2023 – faster than a region that includes traditional outdoor hotspots such as California, Colorado and Montana.

REI hasn’t chosen these locations out of the blue. A five-minute drive from the new Beavercreek REI store lies a trailhead connected to the Great American Rail-Trail , an ambitious cross-country project that in the future would link Washington DC with the Pacific Ocean along a dedicated, continuous trail path. That, in turn, is close to the Little Miami River, a designated national scenic river that’s popular with fishers and paddlers.

Similar scenes are playing out in central and upstate New York.

During the second world war, close to 1,000 people were employed in the Ithaca Gun Factory, producing small arms for the US military and general consumer. By 1962, more than one in three workers in Ithaca’s Tompkins county were employed in manufacturing.

Since then, the city of around 100,000 people that’s a hub for the Finger Lakes region has pivoted to put its outdoor assets at the center of its economy. Visitors, many of whom are outdoor recreators, spend around $225m in Tompkins county every year, with Buttermilk Falls state park and its 500ft of cascades and rapids attracting more than 358,000 people in 2021.

“Outdoor recreation really took off after the pandemic in this region,” says Jennifer Wells, an outdoor recreation educator who runs Paddle-N-More, a watercraft rental company on the shores of Cayuga Lake north of Ithaca.

“The summer of 2020 and 2021 we saw about a 45% growth rate.”

Wells says that while she’s partly concerned for what it would mean for existing outdoor stores in Ithaca, she’s excited about REI coming to town.

“I always think about how do we develop as a destination area, and with the city of Ithaca and Tompkins county wanting to promote outdoor recreation … maybe REI will be a draw.”

Two hours north of Albany, a former manufacturing hub that’s also set to see an REI co-op store open this year, hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested into the region’s winter sports facilities in Lake Placid, the location of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

In Detroit’s northern suburbs, a $20m cleanup project has turned the Clinton River from an industrial dumping ground into a waterway that today sees thousands of kayakers and others paddle downstream into Lake St Clair.

But the pivot away from the region’s industrial past hasn’t always been straightforward. A region-wide legacy of industrial pollution means that places such as Detroit, Milwaukee and elsewhere are having to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in cleanup and remediation expenses alone.

Lead contamination from the site of the former Ithaca Gun Factory, situated a short distance from the stunning, 150ft-high Ithaca Falls, cost millions of dollars to clean up, with environmentalists claiming dangerous levels of chemicals remain.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, plans to include whitewater features as part of a wider restoration initiative for the downtown section of the Grand River have been scrapped due to concerns posed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The project, which has been in the works for 15 years, would have seen several lowhead dams – a known drowning danger – removed and replaced with wave features. The EPA claimed the whitewater features could pose a safety hazard and in March and the City of Grand Rapids withdrew its permit application.

Still, with billions of government infrastructure dollars coming into the region expected to boost jobs and population growth in the years ahead, the outdoor industry upswing is set to continue.

“People are seeking outdoor recreation,” says Wells, who also runs a children’s adventure camp on Cayuga Lake, the longest of the 11 Finger Lakes.

“And Ithaca is a lovely place to be.”

The feature debut for the writing-directing team of Joel and Ethan Coen is a drenched-in-sweat, swarming-with-shadows thriller set deep in the heart of Texas. When a sleazy bar owner (Hedaya) recruits a private detective (Walsh) to catch his young wife (McDormand) with her lover (John Getz), the stage is set for a series of violent double-crosses. Working with cinematographer Barry Sonnefeld, the Coens and the colorful cast go beyond film noir with their stylish storytelling. “The characteristic Coen awareness, a sly recognition of letting the audience share their power over our access to the story world, is everywhere in evidence” (David Bordwell). The screening of a 35mm print, courtesy Wisconsin Center for Film & Theater Research, dwill be followed by David Bordwell’s video essay discussing point-of-view in Blood Simple (2021, 15 min.)

When Fanny (de Laâge) unexpectedly reunites with an old acquaintance (Schneider), he unveils a long-held crush, initiating a clandestine series of meetings over drinks and lunches. Meanwhile, Fanny navigates the delicate art of concealing these encounters from her possessive, affluent husband (Poupaud). For his 50th theatrical feature, writer-director Woody Allen has returned to themes of crime and punishment that he previously explored in Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point. A compelling tale of fate and murder with a sardonic sense of humor, Coup de Chance “looks and plays like many of [Allen’s] recent movies, only better; it sounds like them, too, except that it’s in French” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times ).

As a pair of hapless plumbers mistaken for high society elites, Abbott and Costello unleash a flood of sight gags, physical comedy, and classic vaudeville-era bits on the manner born, with great help from Marion Hutton (sister of Betty!) and the inimitable Arthur Treacher. Consistently hilarious, and featuring a handful of memorable songs, In Society stands out as one of the very best of the 28 features A&C made for Universal Pictures. Preceded by A Tale of Two Kitties (1942, 7 min.) Looney Tunes’s loving tribute to A&C and Tweety Bird’s origin story! (BR)

Ozu's first movie made after World War II is set in a Tokyo neighborhood where a stoic middle-aged widow begrudgingly shelters an abandoned child, their initially chilly relationship thawing over time. With humor, poignancy, and a stark lack of sentimentality, the film delicately unveils the unlikely bond that forms between them amidst the rubble of war. “If Ozu had only made this seventy-two minute film, he would have to be considered one of the world’s great directors” (David Bordwell). 35mm print courtesy Wisconsin Center for Film & Theater Research.

Danish writer/director von Trier's scathing, riveting drama is set in a secluded Rocky Mountain village during the 1930s. The story follows Grace (Kidman), a woman running from her past whose presence disrupts the tightly woven fabric of the community, slowly revealing the small-town’s duplicity and bigotry. This sprawling saga, told from an outsider’s perspective with a bare minimum of sets and production design, provides viewers with an audacious challenge to American society.  Kidman leads a stellar ensemble that also includes Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Ben Gazzara, Philip Baker Hall, Patricia Clarkson, and James Caan.

Attempting to foil the dastardly plot is a dedicated bomb-squad cop (Reeves) and a brave and clever bus passenger (Bullock) who must navigate the oversized vehicle through very busy crosstown traffic. One of the best-remembered summer blockbusters of the 90s, Speed marked the directorial debut of Die Hard cinematographer de Bont and “exemplifies the fairly well-crafted action picture” (David Bordwell). 35mm print courtesy Wisconsin Center for Film & Theater Research.

Filled with deadpan comic touches and homages to other filmmakers like David Lean, Leo McCarey, Yasujiro Ozu, and Jim Jarmusch, Fallen Leaves is also one of the most touching and pleasurable movies of this century. This suspenseful character study, an influence on The Hurt Locker , tells of a neurotic and alcoholic munitions expert (David Farrar) during World War II. The climax of the story, a long tense scene of bomb disposal, is a virtuoso suspense sequence that is one of the most memorable in the filmography of Powell & Pressburger ( The Red Shoes , Black Narcissus ). The Small Back Room , which will be screened in a new 4K restoration, also offers a uniquely atmospheric evocation of the British wartime home front.

Winner of the top prize at the 1985 Venice Film Festival, Vagabond begins with the discovery of the lifeless, frozen body of the young hitch-hiker Mona (Bonnaire). Through flashbacks recounted by individuals who crossed paths with her (portrayed predominantly by amateur actors), Varda constructs a fragmented depiction of this mysterious woman, crafting a mosaic-like portrayal that the director playfully referred to as “Rashomona.” Bonnaire’s multi-faceted turn won her several awards, including France’s Cesar, and the Los Film Critics Association prize for Best Actress. In director Sarafian’s existential car chase classic, Newman stars as Kowalski, a society dropout recruited to bring a Dodge Challenger R/T from Denver to San Francisco. Hoping to make it in record time, Kowalksi drives at such high speeds that police in three states quickly become obsessed with capturing him. Along the way, the driver is helped to avoid the cops by a network of hippies and outsiders, most notably radio DJ Super Soul (memorably played by a pre- Blazing Saddles Cleavon Little). The camera and driving stunt work in Vanishing Point will take your breath away and the desert scenery is gorgeous. “What I like best about the film…is its depiction of a coast-to-coast network of weirdos, dropouts, and misfits ready to help wayfaring strangers – this was one of the finer aspects of sixties-seventies counterculture” (Danny Peary, Guide for the Film Fanatic ).

In a genuine movie star performance, Mikkelsen embodies Ludvig Kahlen, a determined figure born of humble origins, who rises within Denmark's military ranks in the 18th century. Following the wishes of the King to cultivate the unforgiving heath of Jutland, Kahlen confronts not only the harsh terrain but also the numerous cruelties of an enormously wealthy local landowner (Bennebjerg), who knows that any progress on the heath will cost him his power. “A full-blooded epic of one man’s achievements against all odds played perfectly by Mads Mikkelsen” (Leonard Maltin), The Promised Land is grand entertainment that demands to be seen on the big screen.

After the U.S. is turned into a wasteland following a nuclear war, five survivors (Peppard, Vincent, Sanda, plus Paul Winfield and Jackie Earle Haley) travel cross country in a souped-up, high tech Winnebago, searching for civilization. 7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

We did the 7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour with Adriann as our guide and it was outstanding! We drove through beautiful landscapes, had the opportunity to hike in all the national parks and were able to take great photos. Adriann is very accommodating, knows a lot about the individual places and manages to make the trip an unforgettable experience for everyone. We chose the camping option and didn't regret it. The sunrise over the Moment Valley was particularly unique! We can highly recommend Bindlestiff and especially Adriann Narciso :)

Alaska Kenai & Denali Adventure

Rachel is great, so well organized, patient, no friction at all between her and the group. The tour was exactly what I expected with regard to activities and pace. Of course, it was superb that we saw Denali two full days, but it was even a good time in the rain. I will probably travel with G Adventures again.

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

A great tour! One day in each park was just enough to give us a sense of the grandeur of each of them. People taking the tour with us were great, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We were given options so that those who wanted to do things on their own could do so, while those that remained with the group stayed with the guide and learned about the history, geology, etc. This was the first time I took a vacation with a tour group, and I was very glad that I did because I learned more than I would have if I had explored the parks on my own.

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Majestic Alaska (10 Days) Tour

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

It was an awesome tour. Saw and did so much. I would recommend Trafalgar to tour with. We are booked next year for The Colorful Trails of the SW in September. I want to say our tour director,Tyler Browning, is one of the best guides we have had. He is personable, friendly, caring, very knowledgeable and on top of everything. He is GREAT!

Northern California (8 Days)

Very good trip. Tour guide and coach driver were excellent. Accommodations were great. I would recommend this trip to others. Except, I would not recommend going to the trip sponsored dinner at the Happy Girl Coffee House in Monterey. The food was just awful in my opinion. Best place for dinner that night would at one of the seafood restaurants at be Fisherman's Warf located right in back of the hotel.

Nature\'s Best: Alaska Tour

Nature's Best: Alaska

We loved everything except the boat tour out of Seward. The seas were way too rough to go out. It was the final tour of the year on that boat. It should of been cancelled and refunded in full. We received $50 each back because the tour was shortened from 6 hours to 5 hours. I repeat again. Waste of time. I did not take a picture. People were throwing up (plenty of them). Did not see any whales. We were notified the day before that the seas could be rough. Globus should of taken the initiative and cancelled. Did not have a good time at all.

Spectacular Alaska! Tour

Spectacular Alaska!

Everything was excellent, except food choices i would rate okay. No selection and sub par food otherwise great!!!

What people love about USA Tours for Seniors

Hogan was our tour guide driver, fun fact infotainment, cook, photographer... he was outstanding.
Did the 3 day mini park explorer tour to Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon and Grand Canyon. Joe and Adrian, our guides, were exceptional and made the trip comfortable and very memorable. They were knowledgeable, helpful, accommodating to special requests, and very approachable. Great planning, incredible views and hikes, a real window to the American southwest. This was my second tour with Bindlestiff and I highly recommend traveling with them!
Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.

Boston red sox at st. louis cardinals odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

The Boston Red Sox (22-22) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (18-25) Friday in the opener of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium at 8:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Sox vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; St. Louis won 3-0 last year

The Red Sox dropped their 3rd in 4 games Thursday with a 7-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. They made it interesting, though, as they battled back from 5-1 to tie it before succumbing. The Red Sox lead the majors with a 2.79 ERA and are tied for 15th with 4.3 R/game.

The Cardinals did what they do and failed to complete a sweep in a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday. They’re just 3-7 over their last 10 but come home for a 9-game homestand. Cardinals 1B Paul Goldschmidt is having an alarmingly bad season with a .206/.291/.300 slash line. He is hitting .140 with 22 K’s in 50 at-bats in May.

Red Sox at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Brayan Bello   vs. RHP Kyle Gibson

Bello (4-1, 3.13 ERA) makes his 7th start. He has a 1.07 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 in 31 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 K Sunday against Washington Nationals
  • Has never faced Cardinals before
  • 2024 road stats: 2-0, 3.38 ERA (16 IP, 6 ER), 0.88 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 in 3 starts

Gibson (2-2, 3.67 ERA) makes his 9th start. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9 and 7.3 K/9 in 49 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 7 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 BB, 5 K Saturday against New York Mets
  • Last 5 GS vs. Boston: 3-1, 3.81 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 21 K in 28 1/3 IP

Red Sox at Cardinals odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 1 p.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML) : Red Sox -115 (bet $115 to win $100) | Cardinals -105 (bet $105 to win $100)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Red Sox -1.5 (+145) | Cardinals +1.5 (-175)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 8 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Red Sox at Cardinals picks and predictions

Red Sox 5, Cardinals 2

The Cardinals are tied for 27th with 3.6 R/game and have a miserable 6-11 record at home. They strike out a lot and pop up so many balls in their spacious park that there’s a saturation in the cans of corn market in the Midwest. The Cards also seem to struggle against pitchers they’re facing for the first time.

So, what do the Red Sox do well? Pitch. What do the Cardinals not do well? Hit.

Take the RED SOX -115 .

Run line/Against the spread

OF Tyler O’Neill makes his return to St. Louis after the team kind of threw him under the bus with some comments questioning his desire to play. Well, he has shown that desire in his new uniform with 10 homers. I don’t expect a warm reception for him, and I expect him to have a big revenge series. Take TYLER O’NEILL OVER 1.5 H+R+RBI ( -105 ).

If you’re interested in a lottery ticket or have a free bet, consider O’Neill to hit a home run at +600. He had a flair for the dramatic in St. Louis, and I could see him parking a couple this weekend.

The weather is expected to be a humid 71 degrees with a light 3-mph breeze out towards the left-field foul pole. The Red Sox are 2-8 O/U over their last 10, and the Cards are 7-3 due to a mix of bad pitching and increased offense against bad teams. This is a dangerous number, and I will pay the juice to take the ALTERNATE UNDER 8.5 ( -130 ).
