Is Rome a bike-friendly city?

best e-bike and bike tours in Rome

Though Rome isn’t widely recognized as a bike-friendly city, it has yet to make strides in accommodating those who prefer two wheels. Approximately 62 miles (100 km) of bike lanes and dedicated cycle paths have been developed to aid in harmonizing the relationship between cyclists and motorists.

However, it should be noted that Rome’s bustling streets can present challenges, and some areas still need more bike pathways. Nevertheless, for the avid cyclist, options exist to navigate Rome’s vibrant landscape, particularly by selecting less congested roads or utilizing designated bike lanes where available.

What are the safety tips for biking in Rome?

Cycling in Rome calls for careful attention to safety. Consider these precautions for a secure and enjoyable ride:

  • Equip yourself with a helmet that fits well.
  • Enhance visibility with lights, reflectors, and bright or reflective attire.
  • Adhere to all traffic regulations and signs.
  • Align with the flow of traffic, keeping a sensible lane position.
  • Communicate your intentions with hand signals before turning or lane-changing.
  • Brace for varying road conditions, such as cobblestones or constricted pathways.
  • Ensure your bicycle is suitable in size and well-tuned.
  • Favor less busy routes, opting for tranquil streets or specific bike lanes when feasible.

These measures will help mitigate risks, paving the way for a pleasurable and safe cycling adventure in Rome.

What’s the difference between e-bikes and normal bikes?

E-bikes, or electric bikes, are equipped with an electric motor to assist the rider, making pedaling easier. Regular or traditional bikes lack this motorized assistance, relying solely on the rider’s pedaling effort.

Is an electric bike better than a regular bike?

Whether an electric bike is better than a regular bike depends on the rider’s needs and preferences. E-bikes make climbing hills (such as the Aventine Hill or Palatine Hill in Rome) and riding longer distances easier due to the electric assist, making them a preferred option for those needing additional support.

Regular bikes offer a more traditional and often physically demanding experience, which fitness enthusiasts or purists might prefer. The choice will depend on the intended use, the rider’s fitness level, and personal preferences.

Can you write an ebike like a regular bike?

Indeed. Riding an electric bike is much like operating a standard bicycle, although the battery’s additional weight should be considered.

How much faster is an e-bike than a regular bike?

E-bikes can achieve velocities of 20 miles per hour (or up to 28mph for class 3 variants), unlike regular bikes, which usually reach a maximum speed of 10mph for novices or 15mph for more seasoned riders.

Bike Tours in Rome

Rome is a city that is best explored on two wheels. Although there are a lot of possibilities for different tours , biking through Rome allows you to experience the city from a unique perspective while also getting some exercise and fresh air. In this article, we will explore the benefits of bike tours in Rome, what to look for when choosing a tour, popular bike routes, bike rental services, safety rules, and tips for a great biking tour experience.

Is Rome Good for Biking?

Rome is a city full of people and tourists and has a lot of traffic. Biking through Rome allows you to experience the city uniquely, seeing every inch of it.

The city has many bike lanes and dedicated bike paths, which make it a safe and enjoyable place to bike. You can go out around the city on your own or find the right tour operator who will help you experience the city in a fun and memorable way.

Understanding Bike Tours in Rome

Bike tours are an excellent way to explore Rome. Bike tours are available in different types, including guided, self-guided, by day, and by night.

  • Guided bike tours are led by experienced tour guides who will take you to some of the city’s most famous landmarks while giving you details on all the historic monuments.
  • Self-guided bike tours allow you to explore the city at your own pace. I would recommend this if you’re looking to explore the beauty of the monuments and take in the essence of the city rather than its history.
  • By day, bike tours are perfect for those who want to explore the city during the day; although it can get hot and crowded, I would save this for bike routes and tours outside the city.
  • Night bike tours are ideal for those who want to see the city’s landmarks lit up at night. In my personal experience, every monument is different during the day and night. If you can’t go on a tour at night, I recommend a short bike ride or even a walk around the center.

Getting a Hold of a Bike

If you are doing a self-guided tour:

  • Rent a bike from any of the bike shops (All around town) or stands (these can be found around Villa Borghese).
  • Use apps like Lime, dott, Helbiz, etc. They have different types of passes for the day or the week and are all electric.

With a Tour Operator

  • They will provide you with a bike according to your needs (mountain, electric, regular, etc.)

Benefits of Bike Tours

Bike tours in Rome offer several benefits.

First, they allow you to obtain a unique perspective of the city. You will be able to explore and get lost in the small streets of Rome, something impossible to do by taxi or bus .

Secondly, you can explore the city in a way that is safe and enjoyable and, at the same time, try a new experience.

Third, and in my opinion, the best, are the small streets you can cut through and save time. All the monuments are close to each other, so if you take the right turns, you should be able to get from one place to another in no time. We also can’t forget the fact that you can exercise while exploring the city.

What to Look for When Picking the Best Tour

When choosing a bike tour in Rome, look for the following things:

  • The reputation of the tour operator
  • The length of the tour: Bike tours can last a few hours or all day; it’s up to you.
  • The price of the tour: Make sure it’s worth what you’re paying.
  • The level of difficulty of the tour: There are many steep hills; be careful with the sights you’re visiting and their location.
  • The landmarks that will be visited
  • The type of bike that will be used: I recommend an electric bike or a mountain bike.
  • Reviews and experiences from previous visitors: Check online
  • Popular bike routes in Rome; look at some of them here.

Popular Bike Routes in Rome

The Appian Way (Via dell’Appia Antica), the Aurelian Walls, and the Tiber River

  • The Appian Way is a historic road that goes from Rome to the south of Italy. It is a popular bike route because it offers scenic views of the countryside and the Acquedotto. There is limited car circulation, so this is a great place to explore and ride freely.
  • The Aurelian Walls are a series of walls built around Rome in the 3rd century AD. They are a popular bike route because they offer a unique perspective on the city’s history.
  • The Tiber River is also a popular bike route because it offers scenic views of the city and is relatively flat, but it is sometimes flooded or full of mud, especially during rainy days.
  • There are other bike lanes around the city to get from one historic monument to another; most have been added in recent years, so they’re in great condition.

Lesser-Known Routes

There are several lesser-known bike routes in Rome that are worth exploring.

These include the Janiculum Hill (steep and full of uphill streets), the Catacombs , and Ostia Antica .

Janiculum Hill is a scenic hill that offers panoramic views of the city. The Catacombs are a series of underground tunnels used as burial sites in ancient Rome. Ostia Antica is an ancient Roman city that is located outside of Rome.

Can You Cycle in The Vatican?

Cycling is not permitted in the Vatican . The Vatican is a small city-state home to several important landmarks, including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel . Due to the large crowds of tourists and the narrow streets, cycling is not allowed in the Vatican. You can explore the Vatican on foot or by taking a guided tour. You can also bike around the outside if you’re just looking to get a nice view of St. Peter’s.

Safety Rules for Biking in Rome

  • Stay in designated bike lanes when available.
  • Be aware of pedestrians and other cyclists.
  • Avoid biking during rush hour; Romans can be aggressive drivers.

What to Carry and How to Navigate Rome’s Streets

There are a few factors to consider when deciding what to bring. Are you cycling alone? Are you going to be in the city or on the outside? And a few others. These are my basics when I go bike riding:

  • Carry a map, GPS, or your phone to get around the city’s streets, especially if you’re biking on your own.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Don’t fill your bag with snacks unless you’re going on routes outside of the city.
  • Wear sunscreen, especially as the city can get hot during the summer months
  • Bring a lock to secure the bike when parked; some rental places already have them.
  • I recommend renting an electric bike, especially in the summer. Rome has a bunch of hills, and in the heat, you’re sure to regret your decision if you get a regular bike. Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular in Rome. They are perfect for those who want to explore the city at their own pace without getting too tired.
  • Choose a tour that fits their interests and fitness level.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and dress in layers if it’s a bit cold because you will get hot for sure.
  • Don’t limit yourself to the city center. Bike around the Appian Road ; it has beautiful sights and limited vehicle circulation. I can assure you that all paths will leave you at a loss for words.
  • Bring a water bottle with you. Rome has many fountains where you can stop for a refill of your water, or you can even drink directly from the fountain if you want to avoid bringing a bottle.

Be aware that we do not enter monuments or sights due to time restrictions, waiting lines, closing days and entrance tickets. Our bike tours do take you to all the sights, but there are so many that we can only give you an overview. If you want to take a closer look inside e.g. the Colosseum or Roman Forum, please do plan another visit there.

Are reservations required?

We strongly recommend to make a reservation, especially if you are traveling with children or a large group so that we can have the necessary number of bikes and guides prepared. We give priority to our reserved guests and may not be able to accommodate walk-ins.

Do we provide helmets?

Yes – legally you are not obliged to wear a helmet, but we provide helmets for those that would like to wear one. For Kids or teenagers under 18 years it is mandatory to wear a helmet for their own safety

Are the tours cancelled in case of rain?

In case of slight rain our tours are operated. We have ponchos available in our office for anyone that needs them. We encourage all guests to look at the forecasted weather and plan how to dress accordingly. In case of heavy rain, we will reschedule the tours, if possible. Otherwise, we will refund the advanced payment to our guests.

What is your cancellation policy?

We offer 100% refunds on all bike tours if the reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled tour. We do not offer refunds for any reason once we are within 24 hours of the scheduled tour.

Ride through Roman history

While the center of Rome bristles with Roman ruins and awesome artifacts, just outside the city lie the feats of ancient engineering and monumental roads that made this bastion of civilization possible. This bike tour begins in Rome before traversing the ancient route of the Appian Way, with stops at the Regional Park of Appia Antica, the Catacombs of Callixtus, or the Aqueducts en route, allowing you to cycle through history on an immersive, engaging, and family-friendly day tour.

Your bicycle tour begins close to the center of Rome before joining the ancient route of the Appian Way, one of the earliest and most important roads in the Roman Empire. This ancient route dates to 312 BC, and winds its way to Brindisi, in the very south of Italy. As you cycle along a portion of it, your guide’s vivid descriptions and engaging historical narratives will bring to life visions of the soldiers, senators, and emperors who walked this path millennia ago.

Cycling on, you’ll reach the Regional Park of Appia Antica. As the second-largest urban park in Europe, there’s no better way to traverse the vast landscapes and spot the myriad tombs, monuments, and villas that are dotted throughout than by bike tour. Now, choose between a visit to the Catacomb of Callixtus or the Roman Aqueducts.

If you choose the first option, your guided tour will stop at one of the most notable sightseeing landmarks along the course of this road: the Catacomb of Callixtus. This catacomb is famous for housing the Crypt of the Popes, which once contained the crypts of several Popes buried between the 2nd and 4th centuries. An adjoining crypt once housed the remains of Saint Cecilia, making this bike tour stop an essential sightseeing opportunity for anyone interested in Rome’s rich religious history.

Alternatively, your guide will lead you to the monumental ancient structures of the Roman Aqueducts. These towering constructions splice through the rolling hills of the park, standing as legacies of the Romans’ ingenuity and mastery of engineering. Your route will take you to monuments such as the Aqua Felix and Aqua Claudia, two of Ancient Rome’s most vital water sources, as well as Villa delle Vignacce, a ruined villa from the 2nd century AD.

Cycle out of the center of Rome and enter into the rich religious history and ingenious engineering legacies that lie at the very heart of Roman history. This bicycle tour is sure to be a riveting ride through Roman history for the whole family!

Inspired by a genuine love for cycling and a true passion for this incredible city, for over 14 years Top bike has been offering unique ways to experience Rome's cultural, historical and natural riches. In all these years, our formula for the perfect Rome bike tour hasn't budged: a fascination to share, top-notch bicycle equipment , uncompromising safety-conscious guide training and a never-ending itinerary research.

Guide leading guests in an E-Bike Tour of Rome

When you are searching for the best bike tours Rome has to offer, Top bike has a wide variety of options available throughout the year. For those who want to fully experience the heart of the city, we designed three great bike tours in Rome.   If you have half a day to spend, our 4-hour  City Center Highlights  bicycle tour (Rome within the city walls) can be the ideal introduction to many must-see sites in the historic center . From the Colosseum to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, this rather short ride will be a concatenation of jaw dropping moments.

To make the most out of these relatively brief bike tours in Rome, we recommend you to join us just after arriving in the city. Not only will the ride help you map out this central area of the city , but through our guide's explanations, you will also benefit from a general historical framework which could be useful for any further discoveries you will make in the upcoming days of your stay.

Full Day Electric Bike Tour Rome: Italy at its best

Cyclists admiring the panoramic view of Rome from the Villa Borghese Pincio terrace

If you can't wait to indulge yourself in a full city experience and you are searching for a Rome cycling tour that covers all the highlights, including the Saint Peter Basilica and Castel Sant'Angelo, we present to you the 7-hour  Rome in One Day tour . Don't worry about the pace and length: just like all of our tours, this is an electric bike tour.   Rome is rather hilly, so you will appreciate pedaling on two wheels with an electric motor - especially in the summer months! Moreover, this tour includes a lunch in an Italian trattoria , which makes this bike tour of Rome quite the typical Italian experience.

A different yet extraordinary Rome bike tour

A bike tour group crosses the ancient cobbles of the Appian Way

As for a splendid bike tour, Rome has even more to offer besides the formidable historic center. Are you ready for an epic off-the-beaten-path ride , away from the vibrant city, plunging in nature and surrounding yourself with incredible historic structures?   If your heart starts beating a little faster as you read this, our  Ancient Appian Way, Catacombs and Park of the Aqueducts tour  is the perfect solution for you: a ride that has been rated by our guests as one of the best bike tours Rome can offer. Gear-up and pedal on our tough tires on one of the most important Roman roads, towards the stunning Ancient Aqueducts.   The 6-hour version of this Rome bike tour includes a visit of the famous catacombs of St. Callixtus or St. Sebastian.   In this 27-km (17-mile) tour we explore the history- and landscape- rich countryside of Rome , riding predominantly on off-road surfaces including unpaved roads and dirt paths. For this reason we rate the ride as intermediate in difficulty, but rest assured: the trip is perfectly doable for anyone who can confidently ride a bicycle! As on all our tours, here too we chose all the safest and easiest route options available (including bicycle lanes where possible). And if the length of the ride troubles you, fear not: an Electric-assist bicycle is included by default !

Panoramically photogenic: possibly one of the best bike tours in Rome

Bike Tour participants at a photo op in the Garden of Oranges

We tailored our  Panoramic Tour  especially for travelers who adore scenic views . On all of our bike rides in Rome the camera could potentially shoot over-hours, but this excursion tops all others in the photographic opportunities it offers. If you like to see the city at large and gaze at the hills, iconic structures and domes from a higher ground, this may be the bicycle tour for you. Discover how photogenic Rome can be from a birds-eye perspective.   Spin with one of our skillful guides up to the roof of the city (Janiculum hill) , to find out that this is one of those bike tours Rome looks different through, but spectacular for sure! After the pleasant downhill ride you can rest your wheels on the kickstand to marvel at the vast Saint Peter Square.

Why cycling in Italy? (and two alternative bicycle experiences)

One of the reasons travelers choose La Bella Italia is the abundance of beautiful seas, cities and  scenic countryside . For a city bike tour, Rome (Italy's historic core) is an outstanding place to discover the remarkable fusion of history and modern day life. A Rome bicycle tour will boost your imagination and make history come alive through the explanations of our guides.   For our guests with different scenic wishes, we suggest two special  day tours  outside of Rome.   For those who have experienced the capital several times already, we developed the Appia Antica and Castel Gandolfo with Lunch - an outstanding ride to  Castel Gandolfo  (the Summer residence of the Pope) and  Lake Albano  (a small but deep lake of volcanic origin). On this trip, we ride on the green banks of the lake and enjoy a voluptuous Italian lunch there, before pedaling back the complete surviving stretch of the Ancient Appian Way, slightly downhill.   The second option, Alviano, Bagnoregio and Orvieto with Wine Tasting is a picturesque   countryside ride  towards two famous medieval hilltop towns:  Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto . You will be impressed!

Ever dreamed of cycling past Rome’s magnificent sites without the usual hustle and bustle of traffic and tourists? Then, gear up for our expert guide-led e-bike tour that’ll get you out riding along the Road of the Imperial Forums, through the Trastevere neighborhood, and up Capitoline Hill before the crowds wake. Plus, with virtual reality (VR) headsets included, you’ll have a chance to witness the virtually reconstructed ancient Rome, ensuring an experience you’ll be bragging about for years

Starting bright and early, you'll reach your designated starting point close to the Colosseum, the first attraction you will admire during your tour. In fact, after a brief introduction, hop on your e-bike and embark on a delightful ride to one of Rome’s landmarks. As the crowds have yet to have woken, you'll savor the unique opportunity to bask in the grandeur of Rome's most impressive sites in peaceful solitude. Put on your VR headsets to virtually experience the Colosseum in its prime, then continue your ride to Piazza Venezia and Piazza Navona.

Next, peddle to the Pantheon and admire its grandeur in the soft morning light before weaving your way to the charming Trastevere neighborhood. You’ll also enjoy the vibrant energy of Campo dei Fiori's early morning vendor bustle, climb Capitoline Hill for impressive city views, and imagine the excitement of Circus Maximus when it was a vibrant chariot-racing stadium. Remember to don your VR headsets at each stop, and once you’ve arrived back at the starting point, the choice is yours to transfer back to your hotel or grab a well-earned lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Dawn at the Colosseum

You’ll meet your group at the meeting point early in the morning for a brief introduction to your e-bike. These high-quality bikes are easy to ride, even if you’re not an experienced cyclist, and will allow you to check out the city’s many iconic highlights before the crowds hit the streets.

With anticipation building, you’ll hop on straight away and embark on a short ride to the Colosseum. Marvel at its grandeur, free from the usual daytime tourists, and delve into the rich history of the amphitheater as brought to life by your knowledgeable guide. You’ll also don your VR headsets to admire what the Colosseum looked like in its prime.

Piazza Venezia and Piazza Navona

Next, follow your guide along the Via dei Fori Imperiali (Road of the Imperial Forums) to Piazza Venezia (Venice Square). Along the way, admire the Arch of Constantine, one of Rome's best-preserved triumphal arches, and the Imperial Forums, which date back as far as 46 BC. Take a moment to check out Venice Square's impressive buildings and statues, which will look exceptional in the tranquil morning hours, before continuing to Piazza Navona.

Also known as Navona Square, this is arguably the most beautiful of Rome’s squares, and in the early morning, you’ll have the freedom to admire its magnificent fountains and Baroque Roman architecture without the crowds.

The Pantheon

The next part of your Rome e-biking tour takes you to the Pantheon, a marvelously preserved ancient Roman monument. The soft morning light lends a mystical aura to its grand facade, and as you put on the VR headsets, you'll be shown a Pantheon untouched by time, granting you a newfound appreciation for this architectural masterpiece.

Trastevere and Capitoline Hill

Your e-bike tour then continues past the Campo dei Fiori, a vibrant marketplace that'll only just be waking up for the day ahead, and through the picturesque streets of Trastevere, a neighborhood known for its bohemian vibe and ivy-clad houses. Then, climb up to Capitoline Hill for a grand view of the cityscape sprawling before you continue past the ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium of Circus Maximus. Along the way, your guide will point out other interesting landmarks and hidden relics, but before you know it, you'll find yourself returning to the starting point, energized and invigorated, just as the city around you stirs to life.

Fantastic Tour of Rome

My wife and I really enjoyed the tour of Rome from start to finish. We came to Italy for a 2 week vacation celebrating her 40th birthday and started the trip with a few days in Rome. She loves biking and I'm a big history buff so naturally this was something we both wanted to consider. Ed was our tour guide and he took us along various parts of the city and kept the rides brisk but relaxed and was incredibly informative with the historical information. He was also happy to recommend some great dining spots along the way as well. We had a great time on this tour and I can't recommend it enough. It was well worth the price of admission. Cheers!

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

We will be outside the entire time, so make sure to bring a bottle of water and sunscreen in summer.

What kind of terrain will we be riding on?

Beautiful cobblestoned streets are part of what makes Rome so timeless and nostalgic, but it also means that we're in for a bit of a bumpy ride in places! You won't be jostled the entire tour, but keep in mind that some of the route is uneven.

What if it rains?

This tour usually runs rain or shine. If your guide deems the weather conditions unsafe for bike riding, the tour will be canceled for your own safety. We will do our best to reschedule you for another tour or offer you a full refund. We understand your time in Rome is limited, and we want you to experience as much as you can!

What should I wear?

Wear light, comfortable, and sporty clothes in the summer and always wear comfortable shoes or sneakers.

Do we go inside the Colosseum?

This e-bike tour does not include entry to the Colosseum. After seeing it from the outside, you'll likely want to explore the amazing interior, so book a Colosseum Arena Floor tour for an amazing chance to see the Colosseum like a gladiator.

Does this tour include lunch?

No, lunch is not included on this e-bike tour. But you will cycle through the Trastevere neighborhood that has a great food scene. Book our Trastevere Local Food Tour to come back and enjoy authentic Italian food and wine in the evening.

Is this tour run by The Tour Guy?

No, this tour is operated by one of our trusted and vetted partners in Rome.

Can I bring my kids, and do I have to pay for them?

Yes, everyone is welcome on our Rome e-biking tour. Infants under 5 years of age are free and will sit in a child seat attached to their parent's bike. Children under 10 years are entitled to a discount. Please choose accordingly when booking. We will accommodate your kids according to their cycling capacities.

The Ride the Rockies Bicycle Tour, a cherished institution in Colorado’s cycling community for more than three decades, has been canceled for 2024 due to lack of interest, according to the event’s website .

Founded by The Denver Post in 1986, Ride the Rockies was a fully supported tour that took cycling enthusiasts to dozens of locations around the state and over many high mountain passes over the years. The Post sold the event in 2021 to a subsidiary of Gannett USA Today, Ventures Endurance Events.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the towns, participants, sponsors, crew, volunteers, and supporters who have had a role in making this ride so special for the past 37 years,” the event website states.

Efforts to reach tour officials for more information resulted only in an email repeating the statement on the website.

It is unknown whether there will be an attempt to bring the event back next year in some form, or to sell it to another organizer. Officials are “assessing the best options for this beloved ride,” according to the website.

At its peak, the six-day event attracted more than 2,000 cyclists annually for rides of 60 to 80 miles per day. It supported nonprofits in the more than 50 towns it visited over the years.

The website says refunds for those who registered for this year’s tour will be automatically processed within 60 days of submission through EnMotive, an event registration website. Registrants also will receive a commemorative jersey “as a memento and token of our deep appreciation.”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The 12th iteration of the Tour de Staten Island -- a bike event intended to showcase the borough while raising money for and awareness of the work Transportation Alternatives does to support safer streets -- is set for Sunday, with riders departing from Stapleton in the morning.

Justin Wood, 48, came to New York City in 1999. Since then, he’s gotten around primarily via bike, something he grew up doing during his childhood in rural Maine, he recalled. This year will be the second time Wood has participated in the tour since moving to the borough.

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.

A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One

My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.

Radio-Connected Modern Whispers

As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Unforgettable Experience

This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.

While all of our tours maintain a leisurely pace, we want our guests to have fun and be safe, so being able to ride a bike is paramount.

Our Rome Bike Tour is perfect for intermediate bike riders. You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. Lana Del Rey Blasts Former Tour Manager and Claims He Quit Shortly Before Coachella Performance

"Never got a phone call, probably never will," Del Rey wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday, April 19

Lana Del Rey has some choice words for her former tour manager.

On April 19, the "Video Games" singer, 38, shared a lengthy Instagram post expressing gratitude for everyone who made her 2024 Coachella performance so memorable, while also calling out her longtime tour manager and claiming he abruptly quit about a month before the set.

"Thank you guys. For f---ing everything," Del Rey began the post. "Jack and John and Billie for showing up for me -and the band for just killing it and spending months in Sylmar in a 40° warehouse to the point but it was so cold that I caught laryngitis that literally left just a few hours before I hit the stage because Tessa DiPietro spent two hours lifting that cough remotely through her body intuitive skills just minutes before showtime, Wally Crowder for my bad as bikes. Every stunning dancer on stage- and Alex for her beautiful choreography. My stunning three singers who danced and sang their asses off in style and high matching boots. Judah + Chelsea 😇."

She then shifted her tone, as she thanked "Emily" — referring to Emily Holt — for taking over tour manager duties after "Pete quit for no reason after 15 years," appearing to shade former tour manager Peter Abbott.

Lana Del Rey/Instagram

Del Rey alleged "he was butt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally" and "decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager."

"Never got a phone call probably never will. Still grateful for the 15 years though," she added. "No worries – 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set all by ourselves. Not stressful at all. Way to go Emily you f---ing killed it with grace."

Del Rey then went onto thank the rest of her team without skipping a beat.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

The "Cherry" artist headlined Coachella on Friday, and her performance was complete with a grand entrance that saw her hold onto a motorcycle driver's shoulders as she rode to the main stage.

Del Rey dazzled the crowd with a performance wearing a  glittery periwinkle blue dress  from Dolce & Gabbana with a midriff cutout and pleated detailing in the skirt.

She had a massive surprise for fans when she brought special guest  Billie Eilish to perform "Ocean Eyes" and "Video Games."

Del Rey last appeared at Coachella 10 years ago, taking selfies with audience members during her set and even  giving one lucky fan a kiss .
