8 of the best things to do in Cairo

Sara Sioufi

Experience the best of Cairo with this guide to the top things to do © rudi_suardi / Getty Images

Many bucket lists include a trip to  Egypt .

Whether it’s history you’re looking for or a relaxing beach holiday, Egypt fits the bill, and  Cairo , the original city that never sleeps, is at the epicenter of it all. It’s a hustling and bustling place with plenty to keep you occupied.

Plan all the things you want to see and do with this guide to Cairo's top experiences, and allow at least five days to enjoy it all properly.

1. Cruise the Nile as the pharaohs did

The Nile has been Egypt’s lifeline since ancient times and the 6600km-long (4100-mile) river connects almost all the cities of Egypt. A cruise on the Nile is an unmissable thing to do, especially if you go in a felucca – a wooden Egyptian sailing boat. Head out around sunset for the ultimate relaxing experience. Some boats offer food, or you can pack your own and have a picnic on the water.

2. Eat like an Egyptian

Egyptians love to eat and this is a nation that appreciates good food. There are some must-try dishes in Cairo. There's fuul medames , a breakfast dish of fava beans stewed with tahini and seasoned with garlic, cumin and lemon. Fuul has been an Egyptian staple as far back as the 4th century where the beans were buried over embers to slow cook.

There’s also kushari , considered to be the national dish. It's usually made up of rice, lentils, macaroni, chickpeas, fried onions and a spicy tomato sauce. In Cairo, Abou Tarek is the place to go for kushari , although Koshary El Tahrir (7 Abbas El Akkad St) is also popular.

As for other restaurants to consider,  Khufu’s  has an incredible view of the Pyramids as well as a variety of unique takes on traditional Egyptian dishes. Abou El Sid  has branches across Cairo, but the Arabian palace-esque decor makes the branch in Zamalek the top pick. The Circasian chicken in walnut sauce is a favourite, and this is the place to try the Egyptian speciality of pigeon. Zööba , which also has branches across Cairo, is good for quick and delicious street food dishes. Sachi , named Best Restaurant in Egypt by “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” is also ranked in “MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants.”

Planning tip: The traffic in Cairo rivals New York and London and is especially hectic around dinner time, so make sure to factor traffic time in if you have a reservation.

3. See the Pyramids... and then more pyramids

It’s an obvious one. You can’t go to Cairo and not see the Pyramids of Giza , the only remaining wonder of the ancient world, and stunning Egyptian icon. But what many people don’t realize is that there are 118 different pyramids in Egypt, not just the big three – Khufu (Cheops), Khafre and Menkaure – in Giza .

There are 11 pyramids in total in Saqqara , including the Step Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Zoser , which is the oldest pyramid in the world and well worth a visit. Some are open for exploration, including the Pyramid of Teti , a pharaoh of the 6th dynasty whose inscribed basalt sarcophagus still lies inside the tomb.

Planning tip:  The Pyramids are a popular destination and will be incredibly busy. The best way to enjoy them is to hire a local guide either before arrival or through your hotel who will not only take you around with ease but will also regale you with incredible stories as you walk through history.  SEE Egypt  offers quality tours and guides.

4. Visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation

NMEC is the first museum in the Middle East that focuses solely on the ancient Egyptian civilization, covering all the different historical periods that encompass Egypt's history. It’s also the home of royal mummies, who were transported by royal procession to the museum in 2021.

People walk down alleyways lit with intricate lamps in a busy marketplace

5. Shop in the historic Khan Al Khalili bazaar

Established in the 14th century, the Khan Al Khalili market in Cairo has a rich and fascinating history, making it an important district for both cultural and economic activity.

This historic bazaar has been a hub of trade and commerce for centuries, showcasing the enduring traditions of Egyptian crafts and merchant culture. Stepping into Khan Al Khalili is like taking a journey back in time, where you can immerse yourself in the history of this bustling marketplace and explore its intricate alleyways, lined with stalls offering a wide array of goods, from detailed jewelry to colorful textiles and aromatic spices.

Detour: Hidden away in Khan Al Khalili Bazaar, the historic Naguib Mahfouz restaurant opened in 1989 and is a tribute to the famous Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, who won a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. He was born in Old Cairo in 1911 and set most of his early works and short stories in the city. The restaurant's arabesque surroundings transport you back to the days of Old Cairo. You’ll find classic Egyptian dishes such as lamb or chicken kofta, kushari (a mix of noodles, rice, black lentils, fried onions and tomato sauce) and mezze spreads, but it’s the grill that is a must try.

6. Visit the Citadel

The Cairo Citadel , perched on top of a hill, is Egypt’s most iconic mosque and a medieval fortress built by Saladin. Start at the Ottoman-style Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the iconic centerpiece of the citadel. Known as the Alabaster Mosque, it has walls coated with alabaster and a gleaming white courtyard, which is beautifully illuminated.

Move on to the Palace of Jewels. This 1814 Ottoman-style building was the residence of Sultan Muhammad Ali and now contains the throne of Mohammed Ali. On the second floor, there is a gallery of portraits of Egypt’s rulers from Mohammed Ali onwards.

Planning tip:  The fortress offers an incredible aerial view of Old Cairo stretching all the way to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Crowds on a pedestrianized street during the late afternoon. There's a large mosque at one end.

7. Walk the streets of Old Cairo

El-Moez St in Old Cairo – deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 – is a 1km-long (0.6-mile) pedestrian street with some of the greatest concentration of medieval architectural treasures in the Islamic world. Look for a mixture of medieval mosques and buildings alongside modern vendors and shops in the ancient neighbourhood of Gamaleya. The street starts at the northern Bab Al Futuh , one of the last three remaining gates to the original walled city of Cairo, which was built by a Fatimid caliph.

It's free to walk along El-Moez St, but you need a ticket to enter places like the Qalaun Complex and Beit el Suheimy . Buy individual tickets or a combination one that lets you into different spots of interest on El-Moez St, including historical houses, palaces and mausoleums. Most of the mosques are free to enter. Women need to have something to cover their hair and all genders need to take off their shoes at the entrance.

Local tip:  The street is long and it hasn’t been refurbished in some time – expect uneven surfaces and wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Bring a bottle of water along too. It is worth getting a guide for El-Moez St because of the sheer amount of history, but the caretakers of each monument can also provide a guided tour.

8. See complex textiles created by Cairo's artisans on Khayamia St

In the heart of old Islamic Cairo, just behind Bab Zuweila , across the bustling square lies Khayamia St or “ the Street of the Tentmakers ,” one of the oldest streets in Cairo, which dates to 1200 CE. The word “ khayamiya ” is derived from the Arabic word “ khyma, ” meaning “tent” and the craftspeople of the past here were tentmakers.

Historically, the Egyptian tentmakers sewed complex interiors for urban tents. Today, they use these skills to create textile artworks resembling quilts, sustaining their skilled craft within changing economic and political circumstances. At one time it is said that there were more than a thousand people working in the street but now there are only about 20 shops and 30–40 stitchers. The work was featured in the documentary The Tentmakers of Cairo by Kim Beamish, which offered unprecedented access to this small community of talented craftspeople.

15 of the Best Things to Do in Cairo

By Nada El Sawy

Skyline over the Nile in Cairo before sunset aerial view Egypt.

Cairo is on most history buffs’s bucket lists, and with the Grand Egyptian Museum scheduled to open this year, there has never been a better time to start planning that long-awaited trip to the sprawling metropolis that more than 20 million people call home. But Egypt ’s capital has so much more to offer than the obvious historic sites . The city reveals itself in layers and it is up to visitors to peel them back. Here are our picks of the best things to do in Cairo.

Take in the Pyramids at the Giza Plateau in Cairo Egypt.

Take in the Pyramids at the Giza Plateau in Cairo, Egypt.

1. The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

Undoubtedly Egypt’s most famous attraction , the three pyramids of kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure sit on the Giza plateau in Greater Cairo, flanked by the Great Sphinx. Visitors can go inside any of the pyramids at an additional cost—the Great Pyramid of King Khufu is the most popular. Although it feels slightly claustrophobic and there isn’t much to see, it's still a thrill to walk up to the King’s Chamber and its empty granite sarcophagus. Keep in mind that the area closes at 4 p.m. in winter and 5 p.m. in summer. There are actually nine pyramids in total on the site, hence the name of the area’s first restaurant, 9 Pyramids Lounge , which opened in 2020. Book breakfast or lunch here to kickstart a day of exploring. Alternatively, try the upscale restaurant Khufu’s for a modern twist on Egyptian cuisine. Both venues opened as part of a revamp of the visitor experience at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Still to come are electric buses, a new visitor center, and standardized pricing for horse and camel rides to eliminate the overcharging that can occur at some Egyptian sites.

Khan Al Khalili Market in Old Cairo Egypt

2. Khan El-Khalili Bazaar

Yes, it's touristy and, yes, you'll be bombarded with “welcome” and “come” and “please, have a look." Nevertheless, a visit to Cairo isn’t complete without getting lost in the winding alleys of Khan El-Khalili bazaar, where you might be enticed to buy incense sticks, small cups for mint tea, or mini hookahs . Rows of cafes near Al-Azhar mosque serve hot bowls of koshary, a national favorite of rice, macaroni, and lentils topped with tomato sauce and fried onions, and feteer , an Egyptian pastry served sweet or savory. For an elevated (and air-conditioned) setting, go to the Naguib Mahfouz cafe—a tribute to the famous writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. For true Mahfouz fans, there is a museum dedicated to the author’s life and works in a small alleyway next to the Abu al-Dahab mosque. End the day with a Sufi whirling dervishes show in the open-air courtyard of the Wekalet El Ghouri Arts Centre.

Abdeen Palace a residence of the President of Egypt Cairo

Walking tours allow visitors a close-up look at Abdeen Palace.

3. Walk Like An Egyptian Tour

Walk Like An Egyptian , a tour company founded by local guide Asmaa Khattab in 2015, crafts on-foot itineraries offering unique insight and access to Cairo’s cultural sites. Its downtown Cairo tour takes “walkies” to the Sha'ar HaShamayim Synagogue, which is otherwise restricted to group tours and requires prior permission. The same is true for Abdeen Palace, a 500-room property built by Khedive Ismail, who ruled Egypt from 1863 to 1879. Al-Mu'izz Street—a 0.6-mile pedestrian throughway between the old city gates of Bab Zuweila and Bab al-Futouh—is another option for guests wanting a deeper understanding of the city's inner workings. Named after Egypt’s first Fatimid caliph in the 10th century, the street is lined with palaces, mosques, and monuments of Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman rulers. Nearby is Tent Makers Street (or Khayamaya, in Arabic) where colorful fabrics, blankets, cushion covers, and tents can be bought.

4. The Grand Egyptian Museum

Built on a massive site close to the Pyramids, the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is billed as the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization. It will house more than 50,000 artifacts, including two Khufu solar boats and the full Tutankhamun collection—consisting of about 5,300 pieces—under one roof for the first time. Two decades in the making, the museum’s construction and official opening have been delayed numerous times. Although the inauguration date has yet to be announced, it’s being billed for late 2023. In the meantime, visitors can get a preview of the entrance and retail area, which includes an impressive 36-foot-tall, 166,000 lbs, 3,200-year-old Ramses II statue in the atrium.

In fact, the government recently inaugurated a newly updated wing in the 120-year-old building. Before the multi-year renovation, financed by the European Union and assisted by five major European museums, the haphazard displays resembled a warehouse. While it will lose its biggest draw—the Tutankhamun funerary mask and other items belonging to the boy king—to the new museum, there are still tens of thousands of artifacts to discover, including several mummies. At the entrance is an authentic replica of the Rosetta Stone, better preserved than the one at the British Museum and thought to be a century older. Follow a visit with lunch at Felfela, a 10-minute walk away, and try the molokhia green soup and om ali —hot puff pastry topped with milk, nuts, and raisins—for dessert.

6. Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo, also known in Arabic as Mogamaa Al-Adyan (complex of religions), is the site of ancient places of worship of the three monotheistic traditions. Copts currently constitute up to 10 percent of Egypt’s Muslim-majority population. In addition to the Coptic Museum, highlights include the Hanging Church, so-named because it is suspended above a gate of the Babylon Fortress; the Amr Ibn al-As mosque, the first mosque built in Egypt dating back to 642AD; and the Ben Ezra synagogue, which is believed to be the oldest continually maintained synagogue site in the Middle East. All are within easy walking distance of one another and free to enter with the exception of the museum.

7. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation

In a globally televised event in April 2021, Egypt paraded 22 royal mummies through Cairo’s streets from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to their new home at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in Fustat. The 18 kings and four queens are now on display on the lower level of this impeccable museum, which showcases snippets of Egypt’s history spanning the Pharaonic up to the Coptic and Islamic eras. On the main level is the golden coffin of priest Nedjemankh, which was repatriated from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York when an investigation revealed it had been taken out of Egypt illegally.

8. Felucca rides

A breezy felucca ride on the Nile is a must, especially when combined with an onboard meal. Cafellucca offers two-hour trips with either breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just drinks, but a minimum of six people are required. They depart from various locations, including the Nile City restaurant boat in the affluent island district of Zamalek or Mamsha Ahl Masr, a relatively new pedestrian walk in front of the Fairmont Hotel. Alternatively, take an early-morning rowing lesson on the Nile with Cairow , while the waters are still relatively quiet.

9. Salah El Din Citadel

The Citadel, perched above the city in the Mokattam hills, was Egypt’s seat of government for about 700 years. Salah El Din ordered its construction as a fortification against the Crusaders in 1176 and it was subsequently expanded under the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and finally the Mohammed Ali dynasty. The site includes several unexceptional museums housed in palaces, but two must-see attractions are the Mosque of Mohammed Ali and the Gawhara Terrace for a fantastic view over Cairo. Combine this with a visit to nearby Al-Azhar Park —about 15 minutes away by taxi—to take in some greenery, observe Cairenes from all walks of life, and grab a bite to eat.

10. Islamic Cairo

In the heart of Islamic Cairo—often interchangeably called Old Cairo—there are countless historic mosques to explore. One of the most popular stops is the mosque of Ahmed ibn Tulun, which was built in 876 by the Turkish governor of Egypt and Syria. Another notable visit is the Al-Rifa'i Mosque, which was completed in 1912 and the resting place of members of the Mohammed Ali ruling family and the last Shah of Iran who died in Cairo in 1980. The Museum of Islamic Art is also well worth a visit, with artifacts that include well-preserved Qurans, intricately designed ceramics, and carefully carved wooden doors.

11. Gayer-Anderson Museum

Right next door to Ibn Tulun mosque is a little-known museum whose name sticks out like a sore thumb among its Arabic surroundings. The property is named after John Gayer-Anderson, a British soldier and doctor who was seconded into the Egyptian Army as a major in 1907. He was given special permission to live in these two adjoining 16th-century houses, which he restored and furnished with his antiquities collections between 1935 and 1942. These were bequeathed to the Egyptian government upon his death in 1945. The museum’s intriguing architecture includes mashrabiya screens and various themed rooms, such as the Persian Room and the Damascus Room. For film buffs, a few scenes from the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me were shot here.

The Cairo district el Gezirah and the Cairo Tower

The Cairo Tower stands tall in Zamalek.

12. Cairo Tower

The 613-foot Cairo Tower in Zamalek offers 360-degree views of the city—on a clear day, you'll even spot the Pyramids of Giza in the distance. Designed to evoke a Pharaonic lotus flower, the structure was commissioned by President Gamal Abdel Nasser and completed in 1961. Entry tickets for foreigners are pretty reasonable at 200 Egyptian pounds. The tower's 360 Revolving Restaurant requires a minimum spend of a further 250 Egyptian pounds but if you're in the area, we'd recommend Zooba on 26th of July Street instead. The homegrown chain offers a twist on traditional Egyptian street food and recently made its debut on the Middle East and North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

13. Art tours

Qahrawya’s walking tours are designed to help visitors explore the city’s contemporary art scene. Founded by Samia El Khodary in 2018, the company offers a rolling roster of itineraries each month, covering various districts of Cairo. Zamalek alone has more than 35 art galleries and venues, including Ubuntu, ArtTalks, and Aisha Fahmy Palace. Also in the neighborhood—directly across from the Cairo Opera House—is the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, which holds a vast collection of works by renowned 20th- and 21st-century Egyptian artists like Mahmoud Said, Inji Efflatoun, and Gazbia Sirry. Art lovers should also add the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Giza to their to-do list (but definitely skip the Giza Zoo). The museum features a personal collection of more than 300 paintings and 50 sculptures by the likes of Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Auguste Rodin. It reopened in 2021 with a vastly improved security system after a decade-long closure following the daylight heist of Van Gogh’s Poppy Flowers.

14. Manial Palace Museum

Prince Mohammed Ali Tawfik, cousin of King Farouk, drew the architectural plans and designs for this palace on a 14-acre plot of land on the Nile island of Al Manial. Construction began in 1903 and was completed in 1937, and the buildings include a reception hall, clock tower, mosque, residence hall, throne hall, and a bizarre hunting museum with a taxidermy collection. A quick visit will suffice, even if it is just to see the glittering gold throne hall with portraits of Egypt’s rulers from the 19th and 20th centuries.

15. Saqqara and Dahshur

If you were to hire a guide or join an organized tour in one place in Cairo, make it Saqqara. About 16 miles south of the Pyramids of Giza, this is the necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis and Egypt’s largest archaeological site. Highlights include the Pyramid of Djoser or Step Pyramid—the world’s oldest pyramid—and the Mastaba of Ti tomb. Discoveries continue to be made here, including 250 sarcophagi and 150 statuettes in 2022. A further six miles south is Dahshur, where you'll discover the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid. Finding a decent place to eat in the area is a challenge, but the Sakkara Country Club —about 20 minutes by car from the Step Pyramid—is a good option as you make your way back to modern civilization.

Cairo is one of the world's great megacities.

For historical sightseeing, there are few cities that can compete with Cairo, but Egypt's capital offers many more things to do than just museums and mosques.

Its sheer noise, pollution, and traffic can make a first visit here difficult to navigate, but Egypt's capital has so much to offer travelers that look beyond its problems.

Full of vigor, Cairo is the best place to visit in the country to get a feel for modern Egyptian street life. No trip to Egypt is complete without a stay in the city Arabs call Umm al-Dunya (The Mother of the World).

The main tourist attraction everyone is here to see is the Giza Pyramids on the city's doorstep , but the city itself is crammed with major monuments that span centuries of history.

There are so many things to do in Cairo that you'll only be able to cover a sliver on one trip.

To help focus your visit and plan your time use our list of the top attractions in Cairo.

Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza are Cairo's number one half-day trip and the top thing to do on everyone's itinerary.

Right on the edge of the city, on the Giza Plateau, these fourth dynasty funerary temples have been wowing travelers for centuries and continue to be one of Egypt's major highlights .

Despite the heat, the dust, and the tourist hustle, you can't miss a trip here.

The Pyramid of Cheops (also called the Great Pyramid or Pyramid of Khufu) is the largest pyramid of the Giza group, and its interior of narrow passages can be explored, although there isn't much to see, except a plain tomb chamber with an empty sarcophagus.

Farther south on the plateau is the Pyramid of Chephren (also known as the Pyramid of Khefre), with an internal tunnel area, which can be entered, and the smaller Pyramid of Mycerinus (Pyramid of Menkaure).

Guarding these mortuary temples is the lion-bodied and pharaoh-faced Sphinx; one of the ancient world's iconic monuments.

The Giza Plateau is set to welcome another attraction when the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is finally finished.

Sphinx and pyramids at Giza, Cairo

When opened, it will be the biggest museum in the world devoted to exhibiting the antiquities of a single civilization, displaying a wealth of Ancient Egypt's artifacts, many of which have never been seen by the public before.

The Solar Boat (one of the ceremonial solar barques that were unearthed near the Giza Pyramids), which used to be displayed in a museum directly behind the Great Pyramid, has recently been moved to the GEM in readiness for the opening.

After a stop-start construction, beset with financial difficulties, the museum opening date has been set for 2024.

The pyramid plateau is on the edge of Giza's suburban sprawl, roughly 13 kilometers southwest of the central city.

Most people arrive by taxi, but it's also accessible by an easier-than-you-think combo of taking the metro to Giza and then hopping on a local minibus that drops you outside the entrance.

As the area around the Pyramids of Giza is quite sprawling, many travelers elect to see the area by tour, often incorporating a camel or horse ride.

A good option for first-time visitors is the Private Half-Day Trip to the Giza Pyramids with Camel-Riding . This includes pickup and drop-off at your hotel, a guide, lunch, and 25 minutes on a camel.

Address: Al-Ahram Street, Giza

Exterior of the Egyptian Museum

The absolutely staggering collection of antiquities displayed in Cairo's Egyptian Museum makes it one of the world's great museums. You would need a lifetime to properly see everything on show.

The museum was founded in 1857 by French Egyptologist August Mariette and moved to its current home – in the distinctive powder-pink mansion in Downtown Cairo – in 1897.

Yes, the collection is poorly labeled and not well set out due to limits of space (and only a fraction of its total holdings are actually on display).

It also currently suffers with some empty cases due to artifacts having already been transferred to the as yet unopened new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), but you still can't help being impressed by the sheer majesty of the exhibits.

When the GEM opens, this iconic building is slated to still be used as a museum, but it is uncertain which collections it will hold.

The museum's major displays, including the Tutankhamun Galleries, which will form the highlight exhibition within the new GEM, are all definitely being moved.

Meanwhile, in April 2020, the Egyptian Museum's Royal Mummies Collection was transferred to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilizations (NMEC) to further share out the vast amount of Egypt's Pharaonic riches between Cairo's museums.

Mummified Monkey at the Egyptian Museum

If you're pressed for time, make a beeline straight for the Tutankhamun Galleries.

The treasures displayed here were all found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, son-in-law and successor of Amenophis IV (later Akhenaten), who died at the age of 18.

The tomb, discovered by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, contained the largest and richest assemblage of grave goods ever found intact in an Egyptian tomb.

Highlights include Tutankhamun's death mask and sarcophagi (Room 3), the pharaoh's lion throne (Room 35), and his fascinating wardrobe collection (Room 9).

Afterwards, don't miss a wander through the Egyptian jewelry collection (Room 4) which contains more bling than you'll ever see again in one lifetime.

The Egyptian Museum sits right beside Midan Tahrir, the central square of Downtown Cairo.

The easiest way to arrive here is to take the Cairo Metro to Sadat station (on Midan Tahrir) and follow the exit signs to the museum.

Location: Midan al-Tahrir, Downtown

Al-Azhar Mosque

Al-Azhar Mosque is the finest building of Cairo's Fatimid era and one of the city's earliest surviving mosques, completed in 972 CE.

It's also one of the world's oldest universities - Caliph El-Aziz bestowed it with the status of university in 988 CE (the other university vying for "oldest" status is in Fes) and today, Al-Azhar University is still the leading theological center of the Islamic world.

The main entrance is the Gate of the Barbers on the northwest side of the building, adjoining the neo-Arab facade built by Abbas II.

Leave your shoes at the entrance and walk into the central courtyard. To your right is the El-Taibarsiya Medrese which has a mihrab (prayer niche) dating from 1309.

From the central courtyard, you get the best views of the mosque's five minarets, which cap the building.

Across the courtyard is the main prayer hall, spanning a vast 3,000 square meters. The front half is part of the original building, while the rear half was added by Abd el-Rahman.

Al-Azhar Mosque is right in the heart of the Islamic Cairo district and easy to reach by taxi.

Al-Azhar Street runs east from Midan Ataba in the downtown area right to the square where the mosque sits.

Address: Al-Azhar Street, Historic Cairo District

El-Azhar Mosque - Floor plan map

This small church-filled cluster of twisty laneways lies within the walls of Old Babylon, where the Roman Emperor Trajan first built a fortress along the Nile.

Parts of the Roman towers still preside over the main street.

The Coptic Museum here contains a wealth of information on Egypt's early Christian period and is home to one of Egypt's finest collections of Coptic art.

Next door, the 9th-century Hanging Church contains some beautiful examples of Coptic architecture. Founded in the 4th century, the church was originally built over the Roman gate towers (hence the name) and was substantially rebuilt during the 9th century.

For many Christian travelers though, the real highlight of a visit to this district is the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus where local legend says the Virgin Mary, baby Jesus, and family sheltered during King Herod's massacre of male babies.

Farther into the quarter, you come to the Ben Ezra Synagogue which is said to be built near the spot where the baby Moses was found in the reeds.

Just outside the quarter, you can also visit the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As; the first mosque built in Egypt.

Coptic Cairo is easiest reached by taking the Cairo Metro to Mar Girgis station.

The vast necropolis of Saqqara and the nearby site of Dahshur are home to the "other pyramids," and a day trip out here is just as rewarding as a trip to Giza's pyramids. The sites are roughly 30 kilometers south of Cairo.

The Step Pyramid is Saqqara's most popular tourist attraction, but the entire area is littered with gorgeously painted tombs, which are well worth spending a few hours exploring.

Of particular note, don't miss the Serapeum, where the mummies of the sacred Apis bulls were interred, and the Mastaba of Ti, with its colorful and highly detailed painted walls.

Saqqara is so large, and its history as a burial site so vast, that excavations here continue to unearth finds that make headline grabbing news worldwide.

Just down the road are Dahshur's Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid which shouldn't be missed. Expect even the shortest itinerary here to take at least half a day.

National Museum of Egyptian Civilizations (NMEC)

Unlike many of Cairo's other major museums, which all concentrate their exhibits on one specific era, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilizations (NMEC) is dedicated to telling the entire story of Egypt's human history under one roof.

The museum partially opened in 2017 and has been slowly building up its exhibits. Its star attraction arrived in April 2020, when the Royal Mummies Collection found its new permanent home here.

Although the museum's full collection is in no way yet complete, this is where you now come to view Egypt's most famous Pharaonic mummies.

Ramses II and III, Hatshepsut, Amenhotep I, and Seti I and II are among the hugely familiar names of 22 mummies that are displayed in a specially designed Royal Mummies Gallery.

NMEC is in Fustat and is easily combined with a visit to Old Cairo (Coptic Cairo). The museum is a straightforward three-kilometer walk from Coptic Cairo's churches, or a short taxi ride.

Colorful Egyptian lamps for sale at Khan el-Khalili

Khan el-Khalili is one of the world's great shopping experiences.

This souq (bazaar) is a labyrinthine collection of skinny alleyways established as a shopping district in 1400 CE, which still rings with the clang of metal workers and silversmiths.

The main streets have long ago given themselves over completely to the tourist trade (with plenty of cheap papyrus pictures and plastic pyramids on display), but divert off the main drag into the surrounding alleyways, and the tiny stores and cluttered workshops are some of the best places to visit to pick up traditional products in Egypt.

Here, you'll find everything from antiques and gorgeous metal lampshades to locally woven textiles.

While here, stop in at Cairo's most famous coffee shop, Fishawis, where syrupy Arabic coffee and sweet tea are dished out to tourists and local merchants alike at a rapid-fire pace.

For shoppers, the main souq road is Al-Muski Street (called Gawhar al-Qaid Street at its eastern end).

The gold and silver workshops mostly congregate just north of this street's intersection with Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Street, while the spice market section is just to the south.

The market is hemmed in on its eastern side by the Sayyidna el-Husein Mosque, built in 1792 to honor the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

The easiest entry to the Khan el-Khalili area is from Al-Azhar Street, directly across the road from Al-Azhar Mosque.

Cairo Bazaar Quarter - Floor plan map

In a commanding location at the foot of the Mokattam Hills, Cairo's citadel was built by Saladin in 1176.

The original structure he laid out has long disappeared except for the eastern outer walls, but a legacy of rulers has made their own additions here.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the most famous monument and the main reason for visiting. Nicknamed the "Alabaster Mosque," its white stone and tall, disproportionately slender minarets are one of Cairo's great landmarks.

The other big reason to come up here is the views across the city; head to the Gawhara Terrace for the best panorama in town.

Just to the northeast of the Muhammad Ali Mosque is the El-Nasir Mosque, built in 1318-35 by Mohammed el-Nasir.

A collection of rather half-hearted museums (the Police Museum, National Military Museum, and Carriage Museum) take up some of the other buildings on site and are more worthwhile viewing for the architecture of the actual buildings rather than the exhibits themselves.

You can walk to the citadel area from Bab Zuweila, if you're feeling energetic, by heading along Khayyamiyya Street. The walk takes about 30 minutes.

Cairo Citadel - Floor plan map

One of the finest examples of Mamluk architecture in the world, Sultan Hassan Mosque is a vision of Islamic artistry with an abundance of stalactite detailing and intricate arabesque features.

It was built in 1356-63 for the Sultan Hassan el-Nasir.

The massive main doorway at the north corner is almost 26 meters high, and the minaret at the south corner is the tallest in Cairo at 81.5 meters.

The main doorway leads into a domed vestibule, beyond which are a small antechamber and a corridor leading into the ornate open court centered around an ablution fountain.

From here, an iron door leads into the sultan's mausoleum where the stalactitic pendentives of the original dome still survive. In the center of the chamber is the sultan's simple sarcophagus.

Directly facing the Sultan Hassan Mosque is the El-Rifai Mosque, built in 1912 to house the tomb of Khedive Ismail and constructed to replicate its older next door neighbor.

The ex-Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (1919-1980), is also buried here.

Both mosques prominently sit on Midan Salah ad-Din, directly below Cairo's Citadel.

Cairo's Museum of Islamic Art holds one of the most important collections of Middle Eastern artistry in the world.

Severe damage sustained from a car-bomb attack in 2014 resulted in this museum shutting its doors to the public for years but thankfully it has now been reopened.

Ottoman tile work, Ayyubid ceramics, frescoes, delicately patterned wood-inlay, coinage, carved marble tombstones, and jewel-toned carpets, among other items are all on display.

Definitely spend some time perusing the illuminated Qurans and the exhibits of richly decorative ceramics, glassware, and metalware.

Then move on to admire the heavily ornate jewelry collection and the rooms devoted to Astronomy and other sciences, where you'll find highly detailed astrolabes and other equipment.

A visit here is a journey through the breadth and wealth of Islamic heritage.

The museum sits on the edge of the Historic Cairo district, so it's a good place to either begin or end a visit to the neighborhood. It's within easy walking distance (once you've crossed a hideously busy main road) to Bab Zuweila.

Address: Midan Bab Al Khalq, Historic Cairo District

Bab Zuweila

Of all the Historic Cairo district's gates, Bab Zuweila is the most interesting.

You can climb to the top of this medieval-era relic (built in the 11th century) for some amazing rooftop views over the entire neighborhood.

The gate itself has two minarets and is the last southern gate of the old town still standing.

Right next door is the red-and-white stonework of the Sheikh al-Mu'ayyad Mosque, and a few steps farther away are the fascinating artisan stalls of the Street of the Tentmakers, where Egypt's bright fabric used for weddings and other special occasions is sold in bulk.

Address: Al-Motaz li-Din Allah Street, Historic Cairo District

Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street

The northern section of Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street is rimmed by fine Mamluk buildings, which have been painstakingly restored to their former glory.

The Madrassa of as-Salih Ayyub, built in 1247, is a showcase of the tranquil simplicity of Islamic architecture.

Directly across the road from the madrassa is the drop-dead gorgeous Madrassa of Qalaun , rightly considered one of the Mamluk period's greatest architectural triumphs.

It was completed in 1293 by Qalaun's son, Muhammad al-Nasir, and has an interior packed to the brim with intricate tile work, fine marble, mother-of-pearl mosaics, and stained-glass windows. Qalaun's madrassa also functioned as a hospital when it first opened.

A little farther north is the younger (built in 1309) Madrassa of an-Nasr Mohammed with plenty of ornate detailing to admire, before you come to the fabulous Egyptian Textile Museum with a collection that spans the Pharaonic era right up to the Islamic period.

Address: Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street, Historic Cairo District

Ibn Tulun Mosque

The second oldest mosque still standing in Cairo, Ibn Tulun Mosque, was built between 876 and 879 CE by the Abbasid governor Ahmed Ibn Tulun.

At the time it was built, it was the largest mosque in existence.

The main court's colonnades have plentiful surviving fragments of intricate frieze work on display and open onto a series of narrow-fronted halls.

The main prayer hall (on the southern side of the court) still holds onto fragments of its older decoration of carved stucco and wood, and the mihrab here has remnants of its original gold mosaic decoration.

On the mosque's northern side is the 40-meter-high minaret with a fine horseshoe arch over the entrance and a spiral staircase swirling through the interior. It is modeled on the minarets of the Great Mosque of Samarra on the Tigris.

If you climb the 173 steps up to its upper platform there are superb views extending over the sea of houses to the north, and to the Mokattam Hills in the east.

It's an easy stroll from the Sultan Hassan Mosque to the Ibn Tulun Mosque walking straight down Al-Saliba Street.

Address: Al-Saliba Street, Historic Cairo District

Ibn Tulun Mosque - Floor plan map

Built over what was essentially a medieval rubbish dump, Al-Azhar Park is the green lungs of the Historic Cairo district.

It was opened in 2005 and provides a much needed respite to the overcrowded chaos of Cairo's street hustle.

Inside, the gloriously manicured gardens are a lovely place for an evening stroll, especially as the views over the entire old city are gorgeous from here at sunset.

There are also a couple of restaurants on-site, so it's the perfect spot to put your feet up after a long day of sightseeing.

If you come on the weekend, the park is packed full of local families escaping the surrounding roar of traffic that cocoons the rest of Cairo.

Al-Azhar Park is most easily visited by taking a taxi, but if you're already in the Historic Cairo district and it's not too hot, you can turn east onto Darb al-Ahmar Street from Bab Zuweila and walk to the lower park entrance.

Address: Salah Salem Street, Historic Cairo District

Cairo Tower

The Nile island of Gezira is home to the district of Zamalek and the majority of Cairo's arty boutiques and hipster restaurants.

Dating from the mid 19th century, the entire area has a distinctly European feel to its architecture with wide boulevards rimmed by trees and splendidly ornate Belle Époque mansions (many of which are now home to various embassies).

Zamalek is Cairo's top dining destination, but there are also a clutch of art galleries to explore.

The Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in the Gezira Fair Grounds, has a fine collection of 20th-century Egyptian art, including works by Mahmoud Said and Mahmoud Mukhtar.

Nearby, opposite Cairo Opera House, is the recently reopened Mahmoud Mukhtar Museum, which holds a small collection of the famous Egyptian sculptor's work.

Even if you're not specifically into art, check out the Aisha Fahmy Palace just off Sharia 26th July in Zamalek. This 1907 mansion has been finely restored to its original glory, and its rococo interiors are just as much a reason to visit as the rotating art exhibitions it now hosts.

Much of the southern section of Gezira is taken up by the exclusive tennis courts and riding stables of the Gezira Sports Club, but towering above all the lush greenery is the 187-meter-high Cairo Tower, built in 1961 by President Nasser. A trip up the observation deck at sunset to see dusk settle over the city is a must.

Exterior of the Nilometer in Cairo

Lovely Roda Island - just south of Gezira Island - is home to Monastirli Palace, once the residence of an Ottoman pasha.

Inside the palace gardens, right at the island's southern tip, is Cairo's Nilometer, which was used to measure the ebb and flow of the Nile and predict the annual flood heights.

Unlike the Nilometers you'll see in Upper Egypt (such as the surviving Nilometer on Elephantine Island in Aswan ), this one is a much later construction, built in CE 861.

Also in the palace grounds is the small Umm Khalthum Museum, which celebrates the life of Egypt's famed diva.

Umm Khalthum (1898-1975) is the Arab world's beloved songstress, and you'll hear her music everywhere you go in Egypt, blasted out onto the street from ahwas (traditional coffeehouses) and on the stereo of nearly every taxi.

Inside, the museum holds a collection of the singer's possessions, including her fabulously sequined stage costumes, and there's an interesting black and white documentary on her life (with English subtitles).

Outside the palace, Roda Island's streets are fun to wander and still have some dilapidated mansion architecture of the early 20th century.

Manyal Palace

The north end of Roda island holds the gorgeously ornate Manyal Palace.

After an extensive restoration, which took several years, it has re-opened to the public.

The buildings here are an eccentric riot of styles that cherry-pick influences from both traditional Arabic and palatial European designs, resulting in an over-the-top, lavish symphony of interiors.

Check out the Reception Palace, where guests were hosted, with its elaborate wood ceilings, and then the Residential Palace with its Rococo flourishes, Ottoman-style tile work, and oil paintings.

The Throne Palace, decked out in gold, is the real highlight here, though.

The complex was built in the early 20th century by the uncle of King Farouk. It's set within lush green gardens on the shore of the island.

Fayoum landscape

The Al-Fayoum depression, 112 kilometers south of Cairo, is a wonderful day out from the city, with plenty of gobsmacking natural beauty and a handful of excellent historic sites all within a two-hour drive.

Lake Qarun and Wadi Rayyan are the main attractions for wilderness lovers, with plentiful birdlife on display, including flamingos.

If you want to stay overnight, the artist village of Tunis (where some of Egypt's best pottery can be purchased) is the destination most visitors choose.

Al-Fayoum

Fayoum's historic tourist attractions include the ruins of Medinet Madi, with its temple dating from the Middle Kingdom, and a clutch of small pyramids, the best being the Pyramid of Meidum and the Pyramid of Hawara.

The sight not to miss while in Fayoum, though, is the UNESCO-listed desert valley of Wadi Al-Hittan, where you can view the 40 million year old basilosaurus and dorodontus (pre-historic whales) skeletons that were unearthed here.

Mosque of Al-Hakim

Caliph Al-Hakim is one of the most fascinating rulers of Egypt.

This Fatimid leader was renowned for his terrifying rule over the land, which included frequent murders of his royal household staff; nightly patrols of the streets of his city, dressed incognito on a donkey to make sure his subjects were behaving themselves; and issuing bizarre rulings across the country (such as banning the eating of the Egyptian mallow-leaf, called molokheya, because only he wanted to be able to consume it).

His mosque, finished in 1013 CE, has functioned over the centuries as a madrassa, Crusader fortress, and psychiatric hospital and was completely restored in the 1980s.

The minarets here are the most interesting architectural elements. They were originally round, and their present square casing and domed top sections (resembling an Arab incense burner) date from their rebuilding after Cairo's 1303 earthquake.

The mosque sits in between two of the historic district's most important gates. Bab el-Futuh (Gate of Conquests) on the mosque's western side and Bab el-Nasr (Gate of Victory) to the east are similar in form to ancient Roman town gates and were both built in 1087.

You can walk between Al-Azhar Mosque and the Mosque of Al-Hakim by following Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah Street all the way north.

Address: Al-Galal Street, Historic Cairo District

Downtown Cairo

If you want to capture a sense of late 19th century Cairo, when the city was nicknamed the "Paris of the East," take a stroll through the downtown district with your gaze diverted up at the car-exhaust blackened architecture rather than on the bedlam at street level.

The entire area is chock-a-block stuffed with gorgeous but crumbling Belle Époque buildings, which must have looked staggeringly glamorous when they were first built.

Some of the finest buildings from this era, which also have recently cleaned facades, are around Midan Talaat Harb.

On the western edge of Downtown, on Al-Gumhuriya Street, is 19th century Abdin Palace, once the home of Egypt's last khedives.

Today, the former private apartments of the king are open as a museum and contain a bizarre collection of pictures, tapestries, and gifts that have been given to Egypt's presidents by visiting dignitaries.

Downtown Cairo is easily navigated on foot – if you don't mind dodging traffic as you cross the roads.

Tanis

The remains of ancient Tanis, capital of the Tanite kings of the 21st and 22nd dynasties, lie in the northeast of the Nile Delta region, still partly buried under the ridge of the hills.

Tanis is probably most well-known as the lost city where Indiana Jones found the Ark of the Covenant in the classic film Raiders of the Lost Ark .

The movie's storyline has nothing to do with the real archaeological site, though Tanis was indeed "lost" for centuries until archaeological work here in 1939 finally managed to name this site as the city.

The excavated remains haven't been reconstructed as at other Ancient Egypt sites but are full of interest for the archaeologically inclined.

The temple remains mostly lie in ruins, with huge chunks of masonry and statuary scattered in place, while the royal necropolis with its empty tombs (the vast haul of jewelry treasures found here is now housed in its own room at the Egyptian Museum) is hugely interesting to visit.

Tanis is 143 kilometers northeast of Cairo and is best visited by private vehicle.

Baron Empain Palace, Heliopolis district, Cairo

Not to be confused with the Cairo suburb of the same name, ancient Heliopolis was the Egyptian town of Yuno (known in the Greek period as Heliopolis), which is one of the oldest cities in Egypt and, from the Old Kingdom onwards, the spiritual center of the entire country.

It's a site really only for the most enthusiastic of amateur archaeologists as there are only scanty remnants left of the town and of the Temple of Re-Harakhty, which once stood here.

Most of the stones were repurposed over the centuries to build Cairo.

All that remains of the temple is a solitary obelisk made of red Aswan granite, standing 20 meters high.

Some five kilometers east of the obelisk, is the Necropolis of Heliopolis dating from the Middle and New Kingdoms. A notable feature of the Middle Kingdom tombs was the large numbers of weapons found as grave goods.

Near Heliopolis, 13 kilometers northeast from central Cairo, is El-Matariya Church with the so-called Virgin's Tree. This sycamore was planted in 1672, replacing an older tree where, according to local legend, the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus rested during their flight into Egypt.

The little garden where the tree stands is watered from a spring, said to have been called into being by the infant Jesus. The spring yields good fresh water, whereas the water of all the other springs in the area is slightly brackish.

The legend of the Virgin's tree links up with an older cult, for the ancient Egyptians venerated a tree in Heliopolis beneath which Isis was believed to have suckled the infant Horus.

Cairo is a huge city. Many of the luxury hotels sit along the Nile River or are near the Giza Pyramids. Some of the best luxury and mid-range options are in the Garden City district and in Zamalek, both in central Cairo. Budget hotels are mostly found in the Downtown district, right in the center. Below are some highly rated hotels in convenient locations:

Luxury Hotels:

  • In the Garden City district, along the Nile River, the Kempinski Nile Hotel is a charming hotel with restaurants, rooms, and suites with balconies, and a lovely pool area with views over the river and the city.
  • Nearby and also overlooking the Nile, the Four Seasons offers spectacular views, three heated rooftop pools, spacious rooms and suites, along with multiple restaurants and a spa.
  • At the southern end of Gezira Island, with incredible views over the Nile from the rooms, the restaurants, and the infinity pool, the Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah is an elegant five-star property with outstanding service. All of these hotels offer easy access to the downtown and surrounding attractions.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Just steps away from the Egyptian Museum is the Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir , one of Downtown Cairo's newest hotels, with the most comfortable rooms and modern amenities you'll find in Cairo at mid-range prices.
  • For the most atmospheric mid-range stay head to Zamalek, where you'll find the Hotel Longchamps . This is a relaxing boutique hideaway from the city's never-ending din, with friendly staff and good-sized rooms that feature modern, comfortable facilities.

Budget Hotels:

  • Nearly all of Cairo's budget offerings are based downtown. The Golden Hotel has spacious, air-conditioned rooms and a free continental breakfast.
  • The Osiris Hotel offers basic but comfortable rooms with a dash of traditional style, while the City View Hotel has a super convenient location across the road from the Egyptian Museum, and small, comfortable rooms.

A sightseeing tour is a great way to see Cairo's highlights without the hassle of finding your way around, dealing with aggressive touts, and having to negotiate prices. Instead, you can relax and enjoy the sights while you learn about the attractions from a qualified Egyptologist. These tours also include convenient hotel pickup and drop-off, as well as entrance to many of the sites. Below are some fun sightseeing tours that guarantee the lowest price:

  • See the Pyramids: The pyramids are the highlight of a visit to Egypt, and the Private Tour: Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, Memphis, Sakkara takes you to see these icons, as well as other important sites out of the city, including the World Heritage-listed ruins of ancient Egypt's capital at Memphis. • See the City Sights: If you've already seen the pyramids, the Private Tour: Egyptian Museum, Alabaster Mosque, Khan el-Khalili takes you to explore some of Cairo's other top attractions guided by an experienced Egyptologist. This full-day tour is private, so you can tailor the itinerary to suit your interests, spending more time at your favorite attractions. You can also add a visit to the Papyrus Institute.
  • Egypt Major Sights and Nile Cruise: The seven-night Cairo and Aswan tour includes trips to the Egyptian Museum and the Giza Pyramids before whisking you down to Aswan for a Nile Cruise to Luxor, with a free day in Cairo at the end for you to check out the rest of the city's sights.

In general, photography is allowed at many historical sites and tourist attractions in Cairo, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind:

Respect Local Rules: While photography is generally allowed, you should always respect local rules and guidelines. Some sites may have specific areas or objects where photography is restricted, or they may charge a fee for photography.

Tripods and Equipment: Some sites may have rules against the use of tripods and other photography equipment, so it's a good idea to check in advance if you plan to use such equipment.

Restricted Areas: Respect any barriers, ropes, or signs that indicate restricted or no-entry areas. These are usually in place to protect historical sites and artifacts.

Commercial Photography: If you plan to use photos for commercial purposes, such as selling them or using them in publications, you may need special permits, especially if the photos include recognizable people.

Check local rules: Always check with the staff or guides at each site for specific photography rules and guidelines. They can provide information on what is allowed and what should be avoided.

Privacy Considerations: Be respectful of other tourists' privacy. Avoid taking photos of individuals without their consent if they're not part of the general scene.

Cairo, Egypt is best explored during October and April, when the climate is mild yet enjoyable across the nation. Egypt's most famous pyramids experiences scorching summers and chilly though seldom freezing, winters. Choose lightweight, breathable and flexible textiles like cotton and linen while vacationing in the summer. Warmer clothing, such as a pair of pants, a long-sleeved blouse, and a coat, is advisable all through the winter.

Dextromethorphan, Pulmolar, Co-Diovan, Kodinalin, Somanil, Phenobarbital,Nicocodeine, Didrex Tablets, PROXEN, Mogadon, NITRAZEN, vaccination injections, KETAMINE INJ, Ergotamine, Nova Tablets with a longer effect are among the illicit medications, so if a doctor prescribed them to you, you will need to bring proofing documents. Otherwise, they will be confiscated from you.

It is against the law in Egypt to administer antibiotics without a prescription; however, there are no active and enforced governmental policies and rules to regulate such a procedure, thus if it is an ordinary antibiotic and not a specialty/heavy one, you will most likely be able to obtain them.

Winters are moderate and bright, but evenings are chilly to cold, with daytime highs from 7/8 °C (45/46 °F) in the central area (see Luxor) to 10/11 °C (see Aswan), while the coolest nights can reach freeze (0 °C or 32 °F). Cities like Alexandria and Cairo nights are to cold in December, January and February. Enjoy all your tours and things to do in Cairo.

Egypt has a hot season from May to October and a cold season from October to May. Throughout both seasons, the predominant northern winds limit severe temperatures. The average annual temperatures in the coastline ranges from 37° C (99° F) to 14° C (57° F). Have a pleasant tour to Egypt and enjoy all things to do in Cairo trips.

Kushari, Ful, and Molokhiya are three of Egypt's most popular indigenous foods. Kushari. Many Egyptians regard kushari, a dish of rice, macaroni, lentils, and a spicy tomato sauce, to be the national food of Egypt. Ful medames, Egypt's second most popular dish, is made of crushed fava beans boiled in lemon juice with parsley, garlic, onion, and chilli pepper. Molokhiya is a green, leafy vegetable that is chopped and cooked in soups with beef, chicken, and rabbit. Egyptians often eat it with white rice and toast.

It typically snows in the Sinai highlands, although it virtually never gets very cold in Giza, Cairo, or Alexandria. For example, for the first time since 1901, Cairo had a single nighttime snowstorm in December 2013.

If you qualify for an e-visa, you should begin receiving an authorized online visitor's visa for Egypt before travelling there for tourism. You can receive Egypt tourist visa entirely online before arriving in Egypt; This will make entry into the nation easier and more secure with pre-approved authorization. It is also a straightforward process to get a visa on arrival; you may do so at one of the airport kiosks near the immigration station. You will be able to receive your visa considerably faster if you do have a precise quantity for it at the airport.

Fees associated with e-Visas and Visas The following are the types of visas that may be obtained on arrival for tourism purposes: A single-entry visa will set you back $25, while a multiple-entry visa will set you back $60. A plane ticket's price fluctuates depending on where you're travelling from.

For an Egypt e-Visa, you'll need the following documents: - Your original passport, as well as any prior passports you may have. - At minimum two empty pages in your passport - Make two photocopies of the first and last pages of your passport. - Tickets for the return flight have indeed been verified. - The applicant's signatures on the completed visa application form.

It's only a minor inconvenience that may cause discomfort, but it's not dangerous. Even if they are in a vehicle or taxi, international visitors at well-known landmarks such as the Giza Pyramids may be bothered and asked for more money or trade for example a camel ride, flowers, etc. Those that visit the Giza Pyramids with a pre-arranged tour and accompanying guide or as part of a group trip will have a better time.

Many ladies vacation alone and in Egypt, and the vast majority of those women have a wonderful and safe time. Many Egyptians find a woman traveling alone as something perplexing, so expect a huge amount of attention. However, you may also draw unwelcome attention to yourself. The problem of verbal harassment has improved dramatically because Egyptian regulation has been more stringent in those cases where Egyptian males have shied away from unwarranted attention to ladies. If you are staying a night in Cairo try a walking tour around the city in the evening to see how safe is Cairo.

Many Westerners consider Egyptians dress is conservative. There is no obligatory dress code for females in Egypt, if they are Residents or foreigners. In general, it is vital to unexpose your cleavage, knees, and shoulders, thus skirts, blouses, jeans, any form of pants, and anything else that meets these requirements are appropriate in Egyptian culture. Crop tops and shorts are a big no in streets and religious sites.

No. Although no specific clothing is required in Egypt, there are several cultural practices, such as choosing clothes to hide the shoulders and knees. Clothes are a component of the sensation of the place that you may desire to have, but you are under no compulsion to wear them. Less modest clothing can be found on the beach and in high-class neighborhoods. The only time hijab is only necessary is in mosques to honor the sanctity of the site.

Jeans, on the other hand, may not be the ideal choice in Egypt due to the heat. In the heat, wide-leg, linen, or light cotton trousers (like the elephant-style pant popular in Southeast Asia) might help keep you cool. Jeans, on the other hand, are extremely popular among both men and women in Egypt.

Holding handscould be acceptable, but try to keep the following notes on Egyptian culture in mind. Kissing on the street can result in penalties or incarceration in Egypt due to public display of affection regulations, which implies that kissing or hugging on the road can result in a fine or jail, particularly for Egyptians. Many Egyptians citizens, on the other hand, object to embracing, kissing, and other public affection because of societal moral values that must be observed when visiting the nation.

Female tourists in Egypt may feel uneasy in some places of Egypt. While physical crime and violence are uncommon in Egypt, roadside catcalling is ubiquitous, and women are frequently approached when walking alone. If at all feasible, travel in groups of three or more people, and stick on well-lit streets. The situation is a lot better than before and than all other mid eastern countries, but it could be annoying sometimes at specific neighborhood. The more touristic is the place, the less annoyance you will get. If you are spending a night in Cairo we advise a free walking tour in Cairo warm streets.

There is no legislation against it, but Egyptian culture considers shorts to be overly exposing in comparison to the modest and traditional clothing they are accustomed to seeing and wearing. Any visitor, I believe, would want to thoroughly immerse themselves in the culture, and clothing is an important part of that. Furthermore, in comparison to Cairo and Giza, clothing becomes less conservative around the coasts or in wealthier neighborhoods with individuals who are little westernized. We also recommend long dress in Cairo by night.

The cheapest four-day Nile cruises start at US$280. A luxury cruise is more expensive. Pricing for a 5-day cruise start at US$350 per person and go up to US$480 for the most luxurious cruises. The simplest Nile cruise is three days and two nights long and costs around $300.

In order to purchase a ticket that would permit you to enter the pyramids complex and to witness the greatness of the three pyramids and the great sphinx, you will have to pay 200 pounds. As to enter and explore the interior of the great pyramid, Khufu, the ticket is for 400 LE. The ticket for the interior of the second and the third pyramids is for 100 pounds. There is also a chance to enter the solar boat museum and the queens pyramids which are also for separate ticket that you might want to check. Wishing you enjoyable Trips to Cairo.

Egypt Pyramids are on the top list of Tours and Things to do in Cairo trips. It's totally safe to visit the Pyramids. However, tourists visiting well-known monuments such as the Giza Pyramids may be hounded to buy Souvenirs; Even if you are riding in a car or cab some seller men can come to you. Those who explore the Giza Pyramids with a pre-booked guide or on a group tour are more going to have a good experience.

The much more economical is 4 stars Nile cruises; It usually sails for 2 hours down the Nile River; The rate is in the range of $25 to $35 USD per person. While the 5 Stars cruises rates go up to $50 to $60 depends on the cruise ship management. Wish you enjoy our Cairo Trips.

While it may appear hectic, travelling from Cairo to Luxor in one day is totally doable. In this situation, Nile cruises aren't a practical mode of transportation; Therefore people opt for local flights to save time for Luxor's numerous historical sights. On the other hand, some travelers prefer night train to Luxor and back next day. Enjoy our Cairo Trips and Things to do

Cairo is one of the safest cities in the World, on the other hand, there are security everywhere you go. Like any other touristic destinations, you might be careful to go alone to any empty streets at night in Cairo or during your trips in Cairo. Now in 2021 most shops, coffees, and malls close at 10 pm. So, the best things to do in Cairo at night will be open-air sites. Before 10 pm We advise a walking tour in El Azhar destrict to see the Old city of Cairo and enjoy shopping. After 10 pm a night tour to Tahrir Square is good idea. Tahrir Sq is one of the most safe open-air places to walk around at night in Cairo.

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

Egypt Tours Portal is an excellent company to use to arrange your visit to Egypt. They wor Read More k with phenomenal guides (we had Mahmoud Nour in Upper Egypt and Mohsen aka Max in Lower Egypt...I would recommend asking for these guides by name, as they were truly superb), make all the necessary arrangements in terms of drivers, covid testing, hotels, and in-country flights, and can tailor your tour to whatever it is you most want to see. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19. Cannot recommend Egypt Tours Portal enough. Choose them, you won't regret it. Read Less

Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise

We just got back from the 10 day Best of Egypt tour and I have to say, it was amazing. Our guide Ray/Remon was absolutely outstanding- he helped us with any and everything we possibly needed, was super knowledgeable, was always available via WhatsApp anytime we weren't with him, and most of all, advised us on tours and activities that would keep us safe and would not end up with us getting scammed, which was very relieving. The tour itself was very rigorous for the first few days, lots of early mornings and lots of bus travel time, but you get to see the majority of the TOP sights in Egypt in a short amount of time, which was important to us as we didn't have more than 10 days of vacation time to spend. The weather was beautiful except for the day we were supposed to take the hot air balloon ride in Luxor, which was a disappointment, but you can't control when it rains! Overall I would highly recommend this trip to anyone and i would DEFINITELY request Ray/Remon to be your guide. He really was the cherry on top of an already incredible trip!

Astounding. Breathtaking. A glimpse into the past of the greatest civilization on Earth. George (Tamer) was our guide. I have never taken a tour before, and George's know how, knowledge, and personality had no bounds! He is the BEST tour guide, over flowing with love of his past and a passion that shines. Our 9 days were packed, which I love! You can sleep when you get home, but in the mean time, I tried to do all the extra excursions, because why not?! I love Egypt and it's profound history. This opportunity was a dream come true for me as an archaeologist! I HIGHLY recommend this tour and George!!! George is attentive, always made sure we understood and was clear on the days proceedings. I didn't have to worry about a thing, because George was on the ball 100% of the time. Please go. Please absorb. Thank you George, Egypt, my Phoenix group, Tour Radar, and Expat for an experience and perspective I'm still processing.

The Intrepid tour and our guide was excellent! However, I booked my tour through TourRadar, and TourRadar was a disaster from beginning to end, with very slow responses to any questions. I received my voucher only one week before departure, and they did not pass over the information to Intrepid about my late arrival on the opening day. Originally, I was booked via TourRadar on a different tour with a different company, but this was cancelled by TourRadar only 6 weeks before departure and long after confirmation was given and I had booked my flight tickets. So it was pure luck that Intrepid had a tour on the same dates.

To Whom it may concern, this letter is being sent to issue the award for EXCELLANCE. my name is Oweda " Weasy " Gerald. my family, son Andrew " Dru " Gerald and daughter Rachel " Rae " Gerald selected Egypt for our family vacation. our transportation was ready and waiting for us @ the airport. we arrived on a late flight. We missed the meet and greet session. we were escorted to our room and received a call to return to the lobby. Mudi was there waiting to give us 3 the " meet and greet " we developed a fast friendship because he returned back to the hotel just for us. he escorted us to the dinning room where we had a pleasant interaction. also informed that we were waiting for another couple who arrived after us. we dined and received our morning instruction. By day 3 , our group became so close that we named our group " the Mudies ". ( of course I adopted him on the spot !!!! ) the following information are acts of kindness shown to group members that were only made public by those who receive great love and selflessness . this is Mudi . 1.) he made arrangement for a couple's lost luggage to be waiting for them when we arrived @ a tour destination. 2.) my late mothers camera slid out of my pocket , got stuck between bus seats on tour bus.my Kids mentioned it to Mudi. my camera was waiting for me @ the next hotel. 3.) one of our group members arrived ill and Mudi took him straight to the hospital , stayer with him and got all his prescription medication. once his health care services were complete , Mudi brought him to the hotel. We have traveled to all continents except the south pole over the years and Mudi is , by far the most AWESOME and WONDERFUL guide EVER. I saved the best for last. our farewell dinner happened to fall on my 62nd birthday. no one know but my children. guess what ??? I had a surprise party there on the spot with singing and dancing !! Mudi gave group attention as well as one-on-one attention. this is why he should be recognized as the tour guide of the year or of the century !! His devout and loving dedication to us and those before us should earn him this great honor. Respectfully Submitted, the entire Gerald Family.

What people love about Egypt Tours from Cairo

An enjoyable, efficient, and well organized tour. The jam-packed itinerary ensures you get the most out of your time during your stay. Our tour guide Nabil was simply amazing. So friendly, knowledgeable, and informative. He made ancient Egypt come alive for us through his wonderful storytelling. I'd definitely recommend this tour.
Great tour Hassan deserves all the praise in the world he’s an amazing guide!!
The guides on this trip were great. Magee Magoo coordinated things really well. Michael was a great, balanced tour guide at Saccara and Medhat Melad had an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of all things ancient Egypt. I was a bit let down by the spice market and oil shops at the end. Everything was so great that ending up in situations where it felt like the intent was to create ‘emotional buying leverage’ of extremely overpriced goods was a bit of an anti-climax. Everything outside of this was an A+

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.
