Manuals and Guides

Theta Fleet Engineering has many technical manuals and guides that are available to read or download. These resources have been used by our Engineers to create the specifications and information on this website. Please note that these Manuals are very Treknology heavy and you might find some of them rather confusing. But they are here for you to access and learn from. Please feel free to ask our staff about anything in these technical manuals.

Star Trek Blueprints were started by Franz Joseph in 1975 when he created and published his Star Fleet Technical Manual blueprints for Star Trek . Over the past 30+ years a number of technical manuals have been created by a number of individuals, both fans and professional artists, to cover the ever-increasing variety of ships, vehicles, and equipment which are considered both canon and non-canon .

Two of the technical manual creators went on to work on the set of Star Trek.

  • Rick Sternbach was hired as an official illustrator for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and subsequently was hired to work on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager and worked on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual and the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual published by Pocket Books .
  • Geoffrey Mandel was hired as scenic artist on Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Star Charts published by Pocket Books.

Both of these blueprint creators moved on from humble creators of blueprints and technical manuals to help shape the look of the Star Trek universe.

  • Shane Johnson went on to publish the official publication Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise and Worlds of the Federation , both produced by Pocket Books after creating his fan-produced blueprints.

Star Fleet Technical Manual

STAR FLEET COMMAND Star Fleet Headquarters United Federation of Planets Franz Joseph United Federation Representative Stardate 7512.02 to: Ballantine Books Planetary Agents, NA, USA 10022 United Nations/Earth/Sol System 1. A printed Terran version of the Star Fleet Technical Manual was approved by the Federation Council for release to the civilians, and civilian auxiliaries on your planet. We have reviewed copies of this version as printed by you, and wish to assure you and the others that these copies are precisely correct and complete as authorized. We believe some of your civilians are confused because they are unfamiliar with the system and arrangement of Technical Orders, therefore, we offer the following by way of clarification. 2. The print-out version of the Star Fleet Technical Manual, as used by the Star Fleet Academy, is a collection of only those Technical Orders necessary to the indoctrination of new cadets until such time as they have become experienced in the use of the data read-out stations of Mastercom/SFHQ. Further the Terran version contains even fewer Technical Orders because of the prohibition of the Prime Directive. Neither version is a 'book' of 'pages' as the questioners seem to think - nor do they contain 'all' of the technical information stored in the data banks of Mastercom/SFHQ. Your civilians must understand these technical data banks contain all the knowledge presently known within the United Federation of Planets from all of the Member planets. If it were to be published in 'book' form, the sum total would amount to more books than you now have stored in your 'libraries.' Obviously, this cannot be done. It is equally obvious that you cannot have the galactic knowledge of future centuries given to your planet as a 'gift;' you must earn it by your own efforts lust as the others have done. 3. In the Terran version, the General Index summarizes the subject area groupings by Technical Order number blocks as a part of the total system of classification. It does not give the total classification system, nor does it indicate whether or not such subject matter is available. The Introduction (T.0:00:00:06) for instance, is not included because it has not been authorized for release at this time. Each Section Index lists the Technical Orders currently approved for each section, and shows which are the correct issue by authentication date (and amendment code - if required). Thus a Section Index shows whether or not a particular Manual contains the correct issues. Those which are listed with an asterisk may become available in a future print-out from Mastercom/SFHQ. Other Technical Order numbers which are missing do not appear by reason of the prohibition of the Prime Directive, or they have not been approved for release at this time. 4. In as gentle and as diplomatic manner as we may, we should like to point out that this confusion is just another example of the many primitive attributes of your planet which prevent its acceptance into the United Federation of Planets at this time in your current calendar. But be patient, the day will come in the future when your planet will have finally overcome these obstacles, and will take its place in the intergalactic community of intelligent life forms. Live long and prosper.

Summary [ ]

A Publication of the Star Fleet Surgeon General.

WARNING: The Surgeon General's medical reference manual is intended as a basic source of medical information for starship crew members, and is not an alternative to treatment by a physician. First aid procedures should be used with caution, and only by trained personnel.

Contents [ ]

Hippocratic oath [ ].

The first thing any physician should know is the Hippocratic Oath , created by Hippocrates ( 460-370 BC ) cited as the "Father of Terran Medicine."

Introduction [ ]

An essay on the "Historical Trends in Medicine" credited to Professor Dr. John Gill , Ph.D., explains about how surgeons have been on ships created by Humans since the first ships were built, and that how those surgeons have written books on "naval medical practices," such as the first such one on Earth : The Surgeon's Mate by John Woodall in 1617 or The Starship's Medicine Chest and First Aid in Space, first published in 2105 .

Historical [ ]

A timeline of important medical discoveries, failures, and plagues that have affected various important planets, starting with the Great Plague ( "skag maug" ) on Vulcan that killed thousands, and continuing through to the present "Federation Era." The timeline ends around 2260 .

Medical [ ]

Geophysical [ ].

Note: This section is NOT identified with such a category heading in the book.

A " Periodic table of the Elements (Fifth Interstellar Geophysical Conference standard)" lists the elements 1 ( hydrogen ) to 129 ( tricobalt ), and 139 ( kironide ) and 140 ( corbomite ).

Following this is a list of all the elements, their chemical symbols, their atomic numbers (sorted by the mass numbers of their most stable isotopes ), their atomic masses, the places of their discoveries, and the dates of their discoveries. (If Humans discovered it prior to first contact, that place and date is given.) All dates are by Earth calendar , unless specially marked using the Vulcan calendar, which lists Vulcan years post- Surak .

Radiation [ ]

Within this section are described a variety of electromagnetic and particulate radiations, and three distinct radioactive elements (specifically, radium , uranium , and celebium ) are identified. This is followed by a drawing depicting two types of injurious cell mutation.

The preface text is described as being drawn from the Star Fleet Handbook of Pharmacology, 5th Edition, whose specific author is not named.

A variety of drugs, some referred to in TOS and some in TAS , are listed in a table that gives the following information about each:

  • their names together with their chemical compositions (depicted by structural formulae);
  • their histories, derivations, and origins;
  • their classifications;
  • the mechanisms of their actions;
  • their clinical uses;
  • the usual dosages of each that should be administered; and
  • possible side effects and toxic effects that can result from their employment.

Diseases [ ]

The preface text is drawn from "Pathology: Treating The Unknown, 3rd Edition," which in turn is credited to Dr. Leonard McCoy , M.D. This section lists diseases, some afflicting characters in TOS and some afflicting characters in TAS . The table that so lists them provides, for each disease:

  • its name and description;
  • its cause or pathogen, or " etiological agent," if known;
  • the onset time of its symptoms and the incubation period of its cause, if known;
  • its signs and symptoms, if known; and
  • the prognosis and treatment of the patient afflicted with it, if known.

One disease NOT listed is " interphase psychosis," whose treatment Dr. Leonard McCoy is credited for having found to be a dilution of a theragen derivative with ethanol in a 3:500 ratio. ( TOS : " The Tholian Web ")

Life sciences [ ]

Humanoid anatomy [ ].

This section of the book is prefaced with text drawn from an edition of The Starship's Medicine Chest and First Aid in Space specified as having been published in 2257.

Andorians are a blue-skinned humanoid species, average height 2.3 meters (male) and 1.8 meters (female). They have a life expectancy of 129 years (male) and 134 years (female).

Their eyes are unusual in that they do not process the whole spectrum of light, and must be used in unison with their antennae. Andorian vision is called "quadroscopic," and in retinal terms at least it is limited to tones of gray. Their auditory receptors (in their antennae) are more advanced then many other humanoids, capable of distinguishing independent sounds from a crowd. Also, to provide better focus for their senses, Andorians will lean their head down towards a person they are listening to, to obtain better focus from their monodirectional antennae.

The Gorn(s) are a green reptilian humanoid species, average height 2 meters (male) and 1.4 meters (female). They have a life expectancy of 55 years (male) and 21 years (female).

Being cold-blooded, they require ambient warmth and prefer to live in tropical climates. Their respiratory systems are less advanced than those of most humanoids, and in Gorn(s), they provide just enough oxygen to their bodies for those bodies to remain functioning. One internal source of temperature is whenever a female Gorn gives birth: Gorn(s) lay eggs, which hatch while still inside the oviduct – this only appears to be live birth. Their eyes are covered in thousands of facets, each with its own protective lid.

Humans are a red-blooded "humanoid" species (originators of the name) with average heights of 1.7 meters for males and 1.5 meters for females. They have a life expectancy of 115 years for males and 122 years for females.

"Information on Human anatomy is abundant, and as such is not included in this particular manual. Texts regarding Humans are available at your local Star Fleet Supply Center for merely five credits . Or, for more information, you are advised to contact:

Klingons are a well-known "humanoid" species famous for their use of bio-engineering by their government to selectively breed out the impure in their species, so only the best survive. They have an average heights of 1.9 meters (male) and 1.7 meters (female). They have a life expectancy of 82 years (male) and 69 years (female).

Their single stomach has two duodenums, which increase digestive flow efficiency to their small intestines. Special notice is given to their small intestine, and physicians should be careful: as their unique design is "stairway-like levels," which first twist downward, then upward again into the large intestine. The higher body temperature of a Klingon is caused by his or her second liver .

Tellarites are a vaguely pig -like humanoid species, known to share several characteristics with the non-sentient lifeform. They have an average heights of 1.8 meters (male) and 2.2 meters (female). They have a life expectancy of 87 years (male) and 93 years (female).

Tellarites's legs end in two-toed feet with hooves; their femur is notable for missing the third trochanter, and their fibulae are vestigial. Their digestive systems are designed for plants, and as such they have two stomachs which utilize bacteria to break down the food before entering their single intestine. They often have multiple births, and their sense of smell and hearing is advanced for a humanoid, while their eyesight is sub-par.

Vulcans are a green-blooded humanoid species with average heights of 2.0 meters (male) and 1.7 meters (female). They have a life expectancy of 250 years.

Average Vulcan anatomy ( Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual )

Males height = 2.0 meters (6'6") Males weight = 70kg (154.3 lbs)

Females height = 1.7 meters (5'6") Females weight = 50kg (110.2 lbs)

Body temperature = 32.78C (91°F) Heart rate = 242 bpm Blood pressure = 80/40

For all of these three, the developments are depicted in drawings representing, in order, their developments in Humans , Andorians , Klingons , Gorns , Tellarites , and Vulcans .

Intelligent aliens [ ]

This section, which, like the earlier section on humanoid anatomy, is prefaced with text drawn from an edition of The Starship's Medicine Chest and First Aid in Space which is specified as having been published in 2257, lists sapient non-humanoid alien beings and identifies either the planets to which they are indigenous or, as in the cases of Korob and Sylvia , the planets where they were found.

The Excalbian race and the horta are both indigenous to the planets where they were found.

  • Carbon-Cycle Life Form – Excalbia ( Excalbia hominidae )

Encountered in TOS : " The Savage Curtain ".

  • Horta – Janus VI ( Janus hominidae )

Encountered in TOS : " The Devil in the Dark ".

  • Medusan – Xi Hydrae V

Encountered in TOS : " Is There in Truth No Beauty? " Represented by a "Hutchinson radiation analysis" of the Medusan "life aura."

  • Ornithoid Alien – Pyris VII ( Vita xenos )

Encountered in TOS : " Catspaw ", with "only the information hastily gathered by tricorder" being provided.

  • Tholian – Tholia

Encountered in TOS : " The Tholian Web ".

The Kelvans are not shown in their true forms.

Parasites [ ]

This section is prefaced by text drawn from the Star Fleet Guide To Alien Life, Volume 17: Parasites.

  • Denebian slime devil – Deneb IV ( Denebia carnivora )
  • Flying parasite – Large Magellanic Cloud? – "Blastoneuron"
  • Regulan bloodworm – Regulus II ( Regulani vermis )
  • Tribble – Iota Geminorium IV ( Polygreminus grex )

This section is prefaced by text drawn from the Star Fleet Guide To Alien Life, Volume 8: Plants.

  • ' Beauregard ' ( Weeper ) – Zeti Reticuli A ( Terrestrius manus )

Shown in TOS : " The Man Trap ".

  • Borgia plant – Planet M113
  • Mako root plant – Neural

Shown in TOS : " A Private Little War ". Described here as being part of the diet of the Mugato /Gumato, in whose droppings its seeds are dispersed, according to the accompanying text. (But see "First Aid" below.)

  • Pod plant – Gamma Trianguli VI

Shown in TOS : " The Apple ".

  • Spore plant – Omicron Ceti III

Shown in TOS : " This Side of Paradise ".

Not shown, either here or in the earlier section on intelligent aliens, are the inhabitants of Phylos , which TAS : " The Infinite Vulcan " depicted.

This section delves into the subject of psionic abilities, listing such examples of possessors of them as Charles Evans , in TOS : " Charlie X ", the Platonians , in TOS : " Plato's Stepchildren "; Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell and Dr. Elizabeth Dehner , both in TOS : " Where No Man Has Gone Before "; and Apollo , in TOS : " Who Mourns for Adonais? Background information [ ]

  • The book was first released in 1977 as a fan publication by "Star Fleet Productions, Inc." This, in turn, was an off-shoot of "The Federation Trading Post," a fan-based Star Trek store located in New York City in the mid-1970s, which Douglas Drexler and his friend Ronald Barlow then ran jointly. Endowed with only a shiny white cover, the fan publication was initially sold exclusively in the store, and had been an initiative of chief editor Eileen Palestine, Barlow's then-girlfriend. The other co-authors were store employees at the time. Later that year, the book was by chance picked up by Ballantine Books (who were looking for a followup for their highly successful Star Fleet Technical Manual ) for an official release, and as such it saw two printings, the first in October and the second a month later in November. Drexler, upon retrospection, has commented, " It’s a strange anomaly of a book that we would not have done except that Ron had this girlfriend, Eileen Palestine, who was a registered nurse and she had the idea of doing the Medical Reference Manual. I thought we could have spent the time doing something more interesting, " [1] and, " It is an awful book, really. I cringe when I look at it now. " ( The Official Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Magazine  issue 11 , p. 51)

Comparative Xenobiology

Numerous illustrations in "The Nagus"

  • Other publications have utilized images derived from this book after they had been featured on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 7 , p. 89 featured the internal anatomy of a tribble, and Star Trek: The Starfleet Survival Guide (p. 110) features a diagram of a Denebian slime devil that first appeared in this book.
  • This is neither the first nor the last example of Star Trek using the non-canon reference books, or sometimes even the unauthorized ones, in the television shows. Some of the early Star Trek films used images from the Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph , while Star Trek: The Motion Picture also used images of Joseph's Constitution -class Star Trek Blueprints . Also, the RPG reference book Among the Clans was used by the writing staff of Star Trek: Enterprise when creating the Ushaan , as well as making Andoria a frozen planet.
  • The type font used for headings was Microgramma Extended Medium.

Star Trek: Why Are Romulan and Klingon Starships So Similar?

Quick links, how are romulan and klingon starships similar, did the klingons and romulans have a military alliance, have klingon and romulan ships ever fought in star trek.

  • The Romulan and Klingon empires are the major forces in the Beta Quadrant and have a long history of complex relations with the Federation and each other.
  • Both empires utilize cloaking technology, and this is vital to understanding their interactions, alliances, and military strategies.
  • While there have been many skirmishes between Romulan and Klingon ships, hardly any conflicts have been depicted on screen.

Fans of Star Trek who grew up with The Next Generation or later series may think they know the relationship between Romulans and Klingons inside out. It’s not good, with the two species even called “blood enemies.” That phrase was painfully illustrated in the third season TNG episode, ‘The Enemy,’ in which Lieutenant Worf refused to grant a life-saving blood transfusion to a Romulan, and the dying Romulan wasn’t willing to accept it. Things were bad, but that’s not the whole story of two alien races who have been a significant part of Star Trek since the beginning.

The Federation sits precisely between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, with the Romulans and Klingons their dominant neighbors on the Beta Quadrant . History suggests that relations between the two are influenced by how either gets on with the Federation. Still, details of conflict and alliances are surprisingly rare. As Star Trek has jumped periods, the canon has scooted around the issue at impulse power, filling in but also contradicting events. However, what evidence there is that a link exists between the two is mainly found in the two empires’ space fleets.

6 Most Powerful Weapons In Star Trek History, Ranked

Fans first encountered the Romulans in a thrilling early episode of the Original Serie s. ‘Balance of Terror’ referenced a devastating Human-Romulan War in the 22nd century, but this was the first time the races had ever seen each other. The explanation was a lack of viewscreen technology during the war, an idea prequels have struggled with in the decades since.

The episode was a memorably taut game of cat and mouse between the Enterprise and a Romulan Bird of Prey that would heavily influence Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and even be replayed in a parallel timeline in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . One of the most memorable parts was the Romulan ship , which sported a stunning full mural of a bird on its ventral hull. Its threat wasn’t in doubt, having destroyed several Federation outposts, and its markings and agility immediately associated the Roman Star Empire with predatory birds.

Star Trek: Most Powerful Klingon Starships, Ranked

Klingons wouldn’t appear for another 12 episodes, and their ships weren’t seen until Season 3’s ‘Day of the Dove’ (although recent remasters have added them to earlier episodes). However, the eye-catching D7 battlecruiser featured a long neck and wings, becoming a design classic and earning an origin in Star Trek: Discovery .

While the D7 design resembled a bird, it was still a surprise when the Romulans were shown to be using the ships in the third season of the Original Series . As Spock quickly explains in ‘The Enterprise Incident,’ “Intelligence reports Romulans now using a Klingon design.” The giveaway on the Romulan variants of the D7 was red and yellow feather motifs on the grey hull.

Star Trek: 10 Best Klingon Stories

After the leap to movie theaters, a new design of Klingon ship debuted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock before it took a vital role in the classic time-traveling installment that followed. Commanded by Kruge, it was a new green Bird of Prey, but it wasn’t Romulan. This iconic new design was to become the Klingon Empire’s most ubiquitous ship well into the 24th century of The Next Generation .

When the Romulans roared back at the end of TNG ’s first season, it was hard not to see their new ship as a statement. By the time of ‘The Neutral Zone,’ the Romulans had been in isolation for over 50 years, but they hadn’t stopped working on their fleet. When it uncloaked, the gigantic Romulan D'deridex-class Warbird dwarfed the Enterprise-D and would become the intimidating lynchpin of their space fleet over the following decade.

Star Trek: Romulan Neutral Zone, Explained

The Romulan Warbird gained a fascinating new perspective when Enterprise introduced a previously unknown Klingon Warbirds in the 22nd century. These appeared during the pilot ‘Broken Bow,’ which recounted the problematic first contact with the Klingon Empire and would appear in the Kobayashi Maru scenario of the Kelvin timeline.

By the 24th century, when Deep Space Nine showed us more of the Romulan and Klingon fleets than ever, the two species were sworn enemies, and the strange crossover in technology and ship naming conventions remained unexplained. However, in the rich fabric of Star Trek , there are plenty of answers to be found.

During Deep Space Nine , the threat of the Dominion forced an alliance between the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans. However, it doesn’t appear to be the first time the great powers of the Beta Quadrant found an advantage in working together. Aside from the designs and names of their ships, the two were united by their use of cloaking devices. While Klingons often dismiss the Romulans as untrustworthy, that technology is too good to overlook and allows the warrior race to pounce on its prey.

Fans saw cloaking technology firsthand through the Klingons thanks to the Bird of Prey that Kirk and crew commandeered when they time-traveled back to 1986 in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

For years, it was generally accepted that Romulans pioneered cloaking technology. ‘Balance of Terror’ was considered Starfleet’s first proper encounter with cloaking technology, but prequel series haven’t been able to avoid diluting or contradicting this. The reputation stood in the 24th century when the Romulans allowed the USS Defiant to be kitted with a cloaking device from Deep Space Nine ’s third season.

Star Trek: Enterprise What Happened To T'Pol?

Enterprise revealed several enemies had used cloaking technology during Starfleet’s formative years. The shows’ creators have expressed regret they let the tech creep into the Romulan arsenal in the 22nd century, but Star Trek Discovery also raised questions when it showed Klingons using cloaking technology as early as 2256.

There has been plenty of evidence that Klingon and Romulan cloaking technology differs. That’s covered perceived Romulan superiority with the technology, the level of imperfection when cloaks are active, and even, as mentioned in Deep Space Nine , the weight of the device. Still, it’s central to any idea of a Romulan-Klingon pact. It was an infiltration mission to gain access to the Romulans’s powerful new and improved cloaking technology in ‘The Enterprise Incident’ that first revealed Romulans using ships of Klingon design. Expanded universe information has been keen to reinforce that link.

Star Trek: Klingon Starships, Explained

In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , it’s revealed that the Klingons, Romulans, and Federation established a joint colony on Nimbus III in the spirit of “galactic peace" in 2267. It clearly worked out better for two of the parties, given that this was just one year before ‘The Enterprise Incident.’

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Journal states that the Romulans traded a cloaking device with the Klingons in exchange for several D7 cruisers. The Klingon Bird-of-Prey Owner's Workshop Manual expands on that, suggesting that cloaking was rolled out through the Klingon fleet after the exchange (explaining why Klingons don’t demonstrate the ability during the Original Series ), but that the technology diverged after the alliance collapsed.

We saw that Klingons had solved the power problems that prevented firing under cloak by the time of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293). The Romulans wouldn’t demonstrate the same ability until the Reman takeover of the Romulan Star Empire revealed the gigantic warbird Scimitar in Star Trek: Nemesis (2379).

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Ending, Explained

If there was a deal before the third season of the Original Series , it seemed stacked in the Klingon empire’s favor. However, prequel series suggest it was unlikely to be the first time the technology was shared. As the Romulan Star Empire’s primary goal has always been to disrupt and delay the expansion of the Federation in the Beta Quadrant, it’s understandable they would have explored all options since humanity achieved warp flight and drew links to the Vulcans.

The real reasons behind similarities and gaps in explanation were far more prosaic. There’s some suggestion that any fourth season of the Original Series would have explored the idea of a Klingon and Romulan alliance, and when that didn’t happen fans were just left with heavy hints.

On the big screen, the similarity was down to a last-minute change of villain. The Search For Spock seemed readymade for the Romulans, as the movie saw the rescue of the most famous Vulcan, and it would have been a great precursor to later storylines about reunification between the two races in TNG and Discovery . However, director Leonard Nimoy, the first cast member to direct Star Trek , favored the more theatrical Klingons as the film’s threat. It was to be a starring moment for the warrior race after their new aesthetic and forehead ridges were introduced in a cameo at the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

Star Trek: 5 Impressive Things Spock Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

The film seized the chance to add a new dimension to its villains. The new-look Klingons were set in stone by Christopher Lloyd’s Commander Kruge, and the Romulans were forgotten. The Klingon Bird of Prey remained. Decked in green with swooping wings, it was well-named but a leftover from earlier scripts that set up the Romulans as foes.Writer Harve Bennett suggested he deliberately kept the ship’s name after picking up on the plot point of technology sharing in the Original Series .

The writers can take the blame for the Klingon Warbird that appeared early in Enterprise, too. Braga confirmed to Star Trek magazine that it was a writer mix-up, where Bird of Prey had been intended, but Warbird made it to the shooting script.

The show has never shown us a war between the empires on the scale or reputation of the Human-Romulan or Federation-Klingon war. But skirmishes have been mentioned. In the Deep Space Nine episode ‘Blood Oath,’ Kor recalls a memorable victory over the Romulans at the Battle of Klach D'kel Brakt in 2271, suggesting any Romulan-Klingon pact during the Original Series can’t have lasted long. The subsequent inconsistent mentions of conflict are most easily explained by a series of on-off alliances.

In the TNG episode ‘Reunion,’ Geordi La Forge mentions that the Romulans and Klingons saw each other as "blood enemies" by 2292. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , set a year after that date, saw the Romulans attempt to sabotage the Khitomer Accords between the Federation and Klingon Empire that would lead to the alliance of the 24th century. That was another failed plot by the Romulans that only helped Earth form alliances against them.

Star Trek: 8 Times The Klingons Were Dishonorable

Subsequent skirmishes recorded in canon include the Romulan attack on a Klingon colony on Khitomer that killed Worf’s parents. The Enterprise’s Security Officer suggests that the attack went some way to painting Romulans as traitors as they were still considered allies in 2346. Three decades later, TNG ’s season 5 revealed that the Romulans were purposefully seeking to influence the Klingon civil war.

Star Trek history would throw disaster at both the Klingons and Romulans, forever changing their role in the galaxy. The destabilization caused by the destruction of the moon Praxis forged the way for an alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. A century later, the destruction of Romulus would inadvertently create the Kelvin timeline and set up the galaxy for the time of Star Trek: Picard . The galaxy remains unpredictable, including the relationship between the two great empires of the Beta Quadrant.
