Nestled on the coast of East Africa, straddling the equator and with Mount Kenya standing proudly above wide-open savannahs and dense forest, Kenya’s dramatic geography and equatorial position has resulted in a range of habitats. Much of the country is made up vast wildlife reserves home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) and hundreds of other species. As well as the vast open plains of the Masai Mara and other national parks, Kenya boasts white sand beaches, flamingo-filled lakes surrounded by wildlife sanctuaries, snow-capped mountains where rarer game species reside and bustling cities including the capital Nairobi, and Mombasa on the coast. The sheer abundance of wildlife and the ability to witness it at such close quarters is undoubtedly what draws many people to this part of the world. The whole safari experience is magical, and you’ll soon slip into the daily rhythms of life here – from the early starts and time to relax around the lodge during the warmest part of the day, to the sundowners and delicious meals, which are all included. Game drives take place early each morning and afternoon as this is when wildlife viewing is at its best. Vehicles have a popup roof and a maximum of six passengers so everyone has a window seat for maximum game viewing and photography opportunities. Evenings in the bush often end with drinks and stories by the campfire under a starry sky, before retiring to your room with a bedtime soundtrack of the weird and wonderful creatures that come out at night. The greatest density of game resides in the Masai Mara National Reserve on Kenya’s southern border, renowned for the great migration which happens every year between June and September. This is one of the world’s most quintessential wildlife experiences, high up on many people’s bucket lists and unlike any other natural phenomenon. It is a classic example of the survival of the fittest, as over a million wildebeest, zebra and antelope make their way across the river bordering between Kenya and Tanzania, facing predators in the form of crocodiles and lions along the way. The Masai Mara offers excellent sightings of the Big Five in their natural habitat as well as other animals including cheetahs, zebras, hippos, crocodiles. Birdlife is plentiful here too, with species including storks, spoonbills, kites, secretary birds, ostriches, cranes and eagles. Further north, another place to take in Kenya’s fabulous wildlife is Samburu National Reserve, where rarer species (the Samburu Special Five) roam around, protected by dedicated conservation efforts. Samburu lies within the Great Rift Valley which stretches across Kenya, made up of volcanoes, lakes and flat desert landscapes. This region has produced some of history's most important archaeological finds and is known as the cradle of humanity. It was formed by violent subterranean forces that tore apart the earth’s crust. Also forming part of Kenya’s Rift Valley, you can visit Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, renowned for the flamingos that paint the landscape a vibrant pink. Within Lake Nakuru National Park there is a sanctuary protecting rhinos and giraffes, whilst other species such as zebras, lions, buffaloes and antelopes can be found grazing on the lake shoreline. Another location where wildlife is protected is the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to the largest population of black rhino in East Africa and, sadly, the world’s last two remaining northern white rhinos. In the conservancy you’ll get a chance to learn about these incredible creatures as well as the chimps in the Jane Goodall Sanctuary. At the end of your safari holiday, Kenya’s golden beaches provide the perfect place to wind down, lapped by the warm Indian Ocean which beckons with activities including kite surfing or sailing on a traditional wooden dhow. Diani Beach is a popular beach area where snorkelling on the coral reef and relaxing under the shade of the palm trees are just some of the attractions. Nearby Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest city, characterised by old colonnaded streets and a thriving port. The capital of Kenya is Nairobi, a fast-growing cosmopolitan city boasting a vibrant cultural life, a range of excellent restaurants and lively nightlife. In Nairobi itself you’ll find a range of museums and markets to explore, whilst Nairobi National Park is a short drive away, home to four of the Big Five roaming in open plains with a city backdrop. A holiday to Kenya also provides the chance to learn about and become immersed in the local culture. The Masai are some of Africa’s most well-known people, but the country is also inhabited by tribes such as the Samburu, the Swahili and the Kikuyu, who maintain a traditional way of life. There are opportunities to give back to the communities you visit, by meeting the locals in schools and Masai villages as well as visiting farms where one of Kenya’s biggest exports, tea, is grown and produced.

Hi Selma - thanks for the shining review! - Josh

Fabulous extended holiday to Central/Southern America.

Just returned from a fabulous extended holiday to Costa Rica, The Galapagos islands and Peru. Llama travel, Ben and colleagues, were fantastic in organising all that we wanted, linking three tours together seamlessly. All the transfers were punctual, professional, with very clean vehicles. All the hotels/lodges/boat (12) were wonderful, very comfortable. All excursions were led by local guides who were very knowledgeable, spoke good English and very friendly. We saw so much more than we would have done by ourselves. Thank you so much to Llama travel, we will certainly use you again.

Date of experience : February 22, 2024

Dear Chris. That's an amazing trip you took, visiting so many incredible places. It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed it and that Ben was so helpful. Let us know if you are interested in visiting any other parts of Latin America - or elsewhere! Luca.

Excellent service and brilliant local guides

We have used Llama 3 times now for long haul trips and we keep going back because the service from the staff in the UK is always very friendly and helpful (thanks Otto!) and because the local tour guides we’ve had have all been first class; very knowledgeable and personable. We also really like travelling round in a small group and the tours always include days that you can spend doing your own thing. We highly recommend Llama and will always go back to them for similar trips.

Excellent customer service

Llama Travel arranged my trip to Ecuador & The Galápagos and their customer service and advice has been excellent from start to finish. The trip exceeded expectations and was great value for money. Will definitely be using again

Just returned from the Taj Tigers and…

Just returned from the Taj Tigers and Temples tour of India - absolutely amazing and worth each and every 5 stars! From my initial enquiry the booking with Llama was handled seamlessly. I questioned a few things prior to departure and Otto answered promptly and with the info I needed. He is also helping with a query I have had since returning. The tour itself was beyond my expectations- the guide Narinder was very knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind and looked after us through each stage of our tour. He even rejigged the itinerary on the very first day and managed with less than 24 hours for us as a group to attend the Holi festival which was an extra special added bonus. The majority of the hotels service was great - a couple of issues which were rectified by the staff with deepest apologies. We were also extremely lucky to see tigers in our additional safari, which I would recommend doing as the guides take you into different areas of the park. The safari included in the initial cost takes you into gate 1 which is the main tourist gate and it is very busy. We were a group of 10 with 2 additional travellers joining us who were staying at the upgrade hotel. As a group of 10 we socialised in the evening and got on very well. I hope to stay in touch. Travelling as two female friends in our 50’s we felt very safe in India. The people are so friendly and welcoming. I hope to return one day. Would definitely travel with llama again and would wholeheartedly recommend to friends and family. Thank you so much Llama travel for an exceptional holiday and service

Date of experience : March 23, 2024

Dear Karen. Thank you so much for your review. It's lovely to hear that you had a good holiday in India and in particular that Narinder was a great guide. If we can help you in future, please let us know. Luca.

Just returned from Angkor Wat and…

Just returned from Angkor Wat and Vietnam North & South. We had a fabulous holiday, from contacting Llama Travel to departure, everything was well organised (hats off to Otto at Llama who helped accommodate us with flights to Singapore, since we wanted to visit there outside of our holiday itinerary). He was professional and prompt, and made making the arrangements easy and pleasant. The whole trip was excellent, a good balance of places to visit, without spending too much time in any one place. The local tour guides were all superb, and made our trips stress free and very enjoyable. All the hotels were very good (some being excellent). We particularly like Llama's use of small group tours: we began with a group of 6, which eventually maxed out at 10 people. The advantage is that you get to know people well, and the tours feel much more intimate. Overall we loved Cambodia and Vietnam, especially the people, who are very friendly and accommodating. We highly rate this trip and, having been with Llama before, we will be booking with them in future.

Date of experience : February 21, 2024

Thanks so much for this glowing review! We're so glad you enjoyed your holiday, Vietnam is a wonderful place. We look forward to helping you with any future trips. - Josh

Jewels of Jordan

Our second trip with Llama Travel and certainly won’t be our last. Everything extremely well organised with excellent accommodation and good food. Our group of 20 was split into two smaller groups of ten and transported in comfortable minibuses with complimentary water. Same guide and driver for the whole trip and both did a great job. Our guide Mo was helpful, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. He really enhanced our enjoyment of the trip. Petra was always going to be the main event and didn’t disappoint, but the other sights and scenery were also impressive. We particularly enjoyed visiting Mount Nebo (despite the fierce wind!) and loved hiking in the Dana Nature Reserve. Would liked to have had an overnight stay there. The desert scenery was fantastic but was a little disappointed with the jeep safari. It lasted less time than advertised and we didn’t venture very far. However, we had a wonderful trip overall. Jordan is a very safe and welcoming country and Llama Travel a great company to see it with.

Date of experience : November 20, 2023

Dear Mandy. Thank you for your review. It's lovely to hear that you had a great trip in Jordan. Thanks especially for your comments regarding the desert jeep safari. We will review this to make sure this is addressed for future trips. We would love to help you arrange another trip in future, so please let us know when you are next planning. Luca.

Just back from Costa Rica

Just back from Costa Rica. From first to last Llama have been outstanding. Great service. Wonderful holiday. Everything was seamless and excellent. I could provide oodles of detail, but sufficient to say, don't bother considering alternatives. For great service and terrific value, I doubt that you can better Llama. Recommended without reservation.

Best tour company I have ever used. Fantastic service, guides ( in Ecuador) always on time, polite, helpful and informative. Would whole -heartedly recommend this superb company. Plus incredible value for money.

Llama travel had everything covered!!!!

Just got back from the extended Botswana mobile safari taking in Cape town and Zimbabwe. From the minute we arrived at Manchester airport, absolutely everything was sorted out for us by llama. We didn't have to do anything ourselves and everything ran so smoothly with absolutely no stress which meant we could relax and enjoy our trip. I can't recommend llama travel enough for the experience we had. We will definitely be booking with them again

Date of experience : August 22, 2023

Hello Angela, we're so glad you enjoyed your trip to Botswana! Thanks for leaving such a kind review, we look forward to helping you plan any future trips. - Josh

Peru and Rio for 3 weeks.

They delivered on the trip but 2 weeks before flying out they informed us that, the optional excursion which we paid for happened to fall on a bank holiday which means that the excursion wont be available on that day. However they did change the flights to try to accommodate the excursion on a different day. We felt that given they are a professional tour company, they should have been aware that day is a bank holiday when we first book the tour. Otherwise everything else run smoothly and we totally enjoyed our trip in Peru and Rio. Peru is a big country and if you wish to see lots of places there is a lot of flying between places, also the local flights are not very reliable, out of 4 flights there were 2 delays. People in Peru were nice and friendly. It is a place we may go back in the future.

Llama Travel Cape Town and the Garden…

Llama Travel Cape Town and the Garden Route plus Victoria Falls. Trip was in January/February 2024 Unable to fault Llama on the level of service and attention when we booked this holiday. Did not have any problems with the hotels, guides, or drivers. Llama offer an upgrade package for the hotels on this trip, in my opinion it is not worth doing, we were 9 couples and one couple did take the upgrade and missed out on a lot of socialising, the hotels on the basic package met all of our needs and we would happily stay in any of them again. Suggest that you do not take the flight that gets into Cape Town very early in the morning, I think it came in about 4AM. The first hotel which is the Sun Square City Bowl does not allow check in until 4PM, some of our group had to wait about 10 hours to get into there room. Since Llama published the details of the holiday Zimbabwe has increased the cost of the visa for entry from $50 to $55 per person. It was not difficult to get the visa at the airport just time consuming.

Date of experience : February 01, 2024

Hi Tim, thanks for the review! We're glad you had a good time in South Africa. We appreciate your feedback on the hotel upgrades, and will take these points into consideration. - Josh

Peruvian Adventure!

Llama Travel organised our 3 week Peruvian adventure and we were impressed by the amount of detail they went into to ensure it was a holiday to remember. Our itinerary was customised to our needs and all our questions were answered quickly and completely. They work with a highly skilled and professional tour company in Peru (Condor Travel) and everything is again planned with military precision. A holiday to remember. Well done and many thanks.

Date of experience : September 26, 2023

Dear Angie. It's lovely to hear that you had such a good holiday in Peru - it's a really special place. Please let us know if we can help you in the future. Luca.

A Passage Through Mexico

My trip to Mexico was simply amazing. Had a minor hiccup early on as my baggage didn’t arrive on air Canada flight, so I was stressed but Luca and his team in Mexico were constantly in touch to help me. All thanks to Luca and Kathya, got my luggage back in time. After that, it was just flawless trip, amazing locations. Especially sumidero canyon, palenque, yaxilan temples. Knowledgeable guides, and on time service. Seeing Mayan sites was a dream come true. A memorable trip indeed. Defo plan to visit South America again with Llama. Thank you!!

Date of experience : July 28, 2023

Thank you for your kind words. We are delighted you had such a great trip. Mexico truly is memorable. When you want to return to Latin America or would like to visit any other of our destinations please get in touch and we will be more than happy to help. Gary

Date of experience : 20 November 2023

Date of experience : 01 February 2024

Thank you!!

Date of experience : 28 July 2023

Thank you for your kind words. We are delighted you had such a great trip. Mexico truly is memorable. When you want to return to Latin America or would like to visit any other of our destinations please get in touch and we will be more than happy to help. Gary

Where do the LeConte Lodge llamas go when they retire? To a slow-paced Tennessee farm

T he LeConte Lodge llamas work tirelessly to haul provisions up and down the mountain to restock comfort supplies for guests and workers up top.

But what happens to the beloved LeConte llamas after they retire?

The pack llamas are perhaps the most unique feature at what's already one of the most unique places on Earth. They're a source of intrigue and delight for lodge guests and even for those who happen across the llama train as it makes its way up and down the Trillium Gap trail three times a week.

They've become mascots of sorts as the lodge's gift shop even offers plush llamas for sale alongside the famous "I Hiked It" shirts.

Veterinarian Melissa Hamilton, who specializes in treating large animals and exotic breeds, has been working with llamas since her days in veterinary school when she purchased llamas of her own, she told Knox News. Her experience made her an excellent fit to work with the LeConte Lodge's workhorse animals.

Why does the LeConte Lodge use llamas?

Lodge owners first started using llamas in 1986, according to a video by Smokies Life. Horses were previously used to take supplies up the mountain, but because of their larger size and lower agility, they had difficulty navigating the mountainous terrain, and their shoes often caused damage to the trail.

Llamas were selected in part for their familiarity with steeper, rockier landscapes, and they have proved to be an excellent fit, according to the video. Their anatomy is ideal for protecting the park's trails, Hamilton said. Llamas have soft pads on the bottoms of their feet.

While these pads also mean they can't carry as much, Hamilton said, the llamas' positive traits outweigh everything else.

"They're hardy," she said, and they require less food than larger animals like horses or mules.

How does the llama operation work?

The "llama train" hikes the 6.7-mile trail each way three times a week, packing in fresh linens and packing out garbage and dirty laundry, the Smokies Life video explained. Two strings of llamas rotate every other trip, although with the lodge's increasing traffic, a fourth trip is sometimes required, Hamilton said.

"Most llamas don't do this type of strenuous work," Hamilton said, so the care the LeConte Lodge llamas receive is particularly important. They have a higher-calorie diet, and receive electrolytes to account for the labor required for the trip up the mountain, Hamilton said. The llamas also receive extra foot care.

Mount LeConte llamas are brought in from locations across the country to take on this task, said Hamilton.

What happens to the llamas when they can't work anymore?

There are various reasons why a llama might not be able to continue packing for the lodge. Between 18 and 25 years is considered later in a llama's lifespan. Some llamas retire before that and some continue to work even at 20 or 21, Hamilton said.

At the LeConte Lodge, the decision happens on a case-by-case basis that prioritizes each llama's well-being. "They try to make sure the animals are happy and doing well with their job," Hamilton said.

LeConte llamas have been retiring to Laughalot Farm, 35 acres of land on the Knox-Loudon County border, since 2017. At that time, the lodge was searching for a new place for older llamas to go, and Hamilton thought of her friends and clients at Laughalot. About six llamas have spent their retirement years there.

The farm is run by Tucker Montgomery, with the help of his family, including his wife, Joyce, and son Nic.

These days, Laughalot is home to pigs, two horses (saved from the slaughterhouse, Montgomery said), longhorn cattle and three former LeConte Lodge llamas.

The retired llamas ‒ Bucky, Steve and Rex ‒ ended up on the farm for different reasons. Bucky is younger, but was retired due to cataracts, while Rex suffers from arthritis, according to Hamilton and Montgomery. Steve, however, is just plain old.

"They're all a little different, just like people," Montgomery said. "Bucky has a major attitude."

"They are so much fun. They're hilarious," he added. "They don't talk back, and they're appreciative of every morsel."

Montgomery said he's grateful not just for the chance to care for the retired llamas, but for the whole experience Laughalot has given him.

"It's a rare privilege to have a small farm these days," he said. And the animals? "The '4 leggers' are my best friends," he said.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
