The palace itself is a masterpiece with a mix of Rajasthani and British architecture and beautiful gardens that are perfect for a peaceful walk. Among the cafes I’ve visited, Cafe Xanders holds a special place; their Babar Pasta is highly recommended. Also, don’t miss out on the lotus pancakes at Caffé Praha . E Street has it all if you’re in the mood for a strong cup of coffee, a sweet piece of cake, or a filling meal. In need of some shopping? Head over to Dolmen Mall i n the Clifton area. The mall has a mix of local and international brands, food courts, a movie theatre, and even an indoor amusement park for kids. This place is perfect for shoppers and a great place to find some souvenirs.

You cannot miss some legendary food points like the Waheed Kabab House is a must-visit! Trust me, their beef kababs and malai Boti are to die for. Then there’s Fresco , which is quite famous for its samosa and dahi baras – an absolute treat to your taste buds!

But the food adventure doesn’t stop there. Head over to Cafe Lazeez for some mouthwatering karahi and Chicken Sajji . For dessert, there’s no place like Delhi Rabri for the best Rabri (a sweet, creamy dish) and Delhi Sweets for an indulgent doodh dhulari and gulab jamun . Also, do yourself a favour and get a matka kulfi from Dilshad Kulfi . Trust me; it’s a creamy delight that you don’t want to miss! To take a boat ride around Manora Island, you must head to the Manora Ferry point at Kemari Port in Karachi. The boats there are usually available throughout the day , offering different tours around the island.

You can join a group tour or hire a private boat for an exclusive tour of the island, a popular choice among places to visit in Karachi with friends . The prices will vary depending on the tour length and the boat type. Before you hop onto a boat, agree on the tour’s price and duration with the boatman to avoid any misunderstandings later.

Once you set foot on Manora Island, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do . Start by visiting the iconic Manora Lighthouse . Remember to wear comfortable shoes , because there are quite a few steps to climb to the top!

The Manora Fort is another must-visit historic site, with its ancient cannons and the remains of British colonial architecture, contributing to the island’s status as one of the best places to visit in Karachi .

Once you’re done enjoying the views, it’s time for some beach fun. The island’s long beach is great for a relaxed walk or a picnic . You can pick up seashells or just sit back and watch the waves. You can stay in one of the huts built in a row if needed.

Tips: pack plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks, especially if you’re visiting during the hot summer months. Also, remember that the beach can get quite crowded on weekends, so if you prefer a quieter experience, try to visit on a weekday.

9. Visit Charna Island

In the Arabian Sea of Karachi, Charna Island feels like a secret paradise just waiting to be discovered. It’s one of the best things to do in Karachi if you’re into snorkelling and scuba diving.

Getting there is a bit of a journey but worth it. You have to first get to this fishing area, a beach called Mubarak Village , about a couple of hours’ drive from Karachi. Then, you’re up for a gorgeous 30-minute boat ride to the island . Charna Island stands out amongst other famous Karachi places for its crystal-clear blue water , a sight not common, especially near Karachi. Once you’re there on the island, there are lots of fun things to do. If you like water sports, you can go snorkelling, scuba diving, cliff diving, or jet skiing. If you don’t like water activities, no problem! You can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool sea air, making it one of the best places to visit in Karachi to relax.

Just a little heads-up, be mindful of where you’re stepping. The island’s got some sharp rocks, and you wouldn’t want to hurt your feet. A pair of covered sandals should do the trick .

Now, if you want to get a taste of the local vibe, I’d recommend trying out the street food in Mubarak Village before or after your island trip. There’s also another beach called French Beach , another fancy beach and a great place to visit in Karachi , which is located near Mubarak Village. It’s usually less crowded than the city beaches , and the sea views are mind-blowing.

10. Visit Bahria Adventure Land

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Karachi , Bahria Adventure Land should definitely be on your list. This theme park is one of the famous places in Karachi that offers affordable fun and is quickly becoming a favourite spot for both kids and adults – truly one of the best places to visit in Karachi .

It’s located on the outskirts of Karachi, within Bahria Town, and the drive is a beautiful escape from the city’s hustle. Depending on where you’re coming from, it could take you anywhere from 3 0 minutes to an hour to get there . It opens from 3 pm to 11 pm , so make sure to plan your day accordingly.

The ticket pricing of Bahria Adventure Land is based on height. If you’re taller than 4 feet 3 inches, you’d be going for the Green Ticket, which is Rs. 3000 . If your height falls between 2 feet 6 inches and 4 feet 3 inches, you’d get the Y ellow Ticket for Rs. 2000 . 

Once you’re there, get ready for a day of thrills and chills! From wild roller coasters to the more relaxed train ride , there’s something for everyone. Not only does it have thrilling rides and water features, but it also hosts a lively marching band and other attractions, which makes it one of the best places to visit in Karachi with friends .

One of the standout features, especially for kids, is the Dino Park . Another major attraction in Bahria Adventure Land is the Day and Night Zoo , also known as Danzoo . It’s the first of its kind in Pakistan, built to international standards. They have a good variety of both exotic and native animals.

A few things to remember when visiting Bahria Adventure Land: wear comfortable clothes and shoes because you’ll be on your feet often. And don’t forget to stay hydrated, especially if you’re visiting during the summer.

You can stop by the food court in the park that serves a variety of local and international cuisines if you are hungry. Or, if you’d rather eat outside the park, you can find various restaurants within Bahria Town .

And don’t think the fun ends when you leave the park! Bahria Town itself is a sight to behold with its clean, wide streets and beautiful architecture. You could make a whole day out of exploring this place.

11. Onederland at Lucky One Mall

One of th e best places to visit in Karachi, especially for fun-seekers, is undoubtedly Onederland . This top-notch indoor amusement park is the epitome of entertainment and rightly stands among Karachi’s famous places.

Situated inside the Lucky One Mall – the biggest mall in Pakistan and the second biggest in South Asia – Onederland is a highlight among the places to visit in Karach i. If you’re brainstorming fun things to do in Karachi , this indoor theme park should be on your list.

Once you get there, you’re going to be spoilt for choice. From thrilling rides to VR experiences , there’s a bit of everything. Some of my favourites are the 4D cinema and the indoor roller coaster.

There’s the ‘ Freak Out ‘ for the thrill-seekers, which swings you around with your legs dangling. If you’re into virtual fun, then ‘ Lazer Maze ‘ is right up your alley. You’ll have to navigate your way through a room filled with laser beams. They also have bumper cars and a carousel for good, old-fashioned fun, making Onederland a hit among the places to visit in Karachi with friends.

Apart from the rides, there’s a huge gaming zone with many arcade games . There’s also a soft play area for kids to run around and have a blast.

But the fun at Lucky One Mall doesn’t stop at Onederland. There’s a whole mall waiting to be explored! It’s a shopaholic’s dream, with many shops selling everything from clothes to electronics . The food court has a variety of restaurants, so you’re guaranteed to find something that tickles your taste buds. If you’ve got some energy left after all that, you can hit the bowling alley for a few games.

Bin Qasim Park, or as the locals sometimes call it, Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim , is a huge park next to Clifton Beach in Karachi, standing proudly among the famous places in Karachi . It’s easy to get to – just grab a rickshaw or use an Uber or Careem and ask for ‘Bin Qasim Park near Clifton.’

The park is big, with a l ong jogging track perfect for evening walks or morning jogs . This fact alone makes it one of the best places to visit in Karachi for fitness freaks. Throughout the park, you’ll also see stunning rose bushes, immaculate green lawns, towering plants, and intricately-designed fountains . If you need a break, you’ll find some lovely wood and marble benches to sit on, making it a good place to read a book or listen to music. If you’re with your family, there’s plenty of room for kids to run around and have fun. There are food courts serving a range of fast food options and shops where you can pick up a souvenir or two.

The park is open from 7 am until 9 pm , but it’s best to go earlier, especially around sunset . Just remember to keep an eye on your belongings while you’re there.

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a quiet moment, tie those shoelaces, grab your water bottle, and head on over!

Imagine being in Karachi just as the city gears up for one of its most awaited events – the Karachi Literature Festival , or KLF, as locals fondly call it; it’s one of the highlights among Karachi’s famous places for literary enthusiasts.

Food and beverages arrangements must be discussed and agreed upon while booking the yachts.  The music system is available on every yacht and guests are allowed to bring their own music in the form of USB or AUX-friendly devices. Mobile devices can be connected via Bluetooth.

We confirm the booking with either full payment or a 50% deposit, with the remaining 50% payable 48 hours before the trip. ‘They left us so helpless, we didn’t know what to do’:

Afghan refugees in Karachi

Karachi, Pakistan - As the world watched the frantic evacuations from Kabul’s airport, thousands of people were making their way to Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan on foot and in any vehicles they could find, far from the glare of news cameras.

Officially, the border is closed to all except those with valid paperwork for medical reasons, work or to see family on either side.

Yet, thousands of Afghans have streamed through the Spin Boldak border crossing in Afghanistan’s southeastern Kandahar province into the Pakistani town of Chaman.

Refugees twice

Local sources say that, for weeks, up to 5,000 Afghans had been crossing daily until August 15, the day the Taliban took control of Kabul; that number has since doubled.

Today, Pakistan is home to more than 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees, many of whom entered the country some 40 years ago, after the Soviet invasion in 1979.

Hundreds of thousands more joined them after the US invasion in 2001.

By 2002, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) counted three million Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Many returned to Afghanistan and the numbers dropped until the US troop withdrawal began this year.

Pakistan’s government insists it is unprepared for a refugee influx and is considering options for how best to manage the new arrivals .

After negotiating the crossing, most refugees make their way to Pakistan’s main urban centres, seeking shelter, safety and, in some instances, the means for an onward journey.

In a bustling corner of Karachi, a sprawling metropolis of more than 20 million people in southern Pakistan, a sizable Afghan community has lived for decades.

Many of them came as refugees in the 1980s.

Behind the narrow, broken streets near the city’s largest bus terminal, the neighbourhood is covered with low-rise apartment complexes, the roads choked with motorcycles and bicycles.

In the corner of one such apartment compound, there are several homes with their doors wide open.

A group of men sits on the stoop as young boys play in the concrete yard.

Some of them have just made their way from Afghanistan. They had to brave violence and risk being turned away or arrested at security checkpoints as they fled a country in the throes of transition.

It is a journey some have endured before.

This is the second time they become refugees. Some, who have refugee ID cards issued by the Pakistani government, know they will have certain rights and protections guaranteed in their host country.

But others have entered without any paperwork at all. Here are some of their stories.

Mohammed Azeem is an ethnic Tajik who worked in a bakery while pursuing an engineering degree in Kabul.

Azeem fled Kabul province after two of his friends were brutally killed by the Taliban just over two weeks ago.

He and his friends had given Afghan forces information on Taliban hideouts in the area in 2016, “for 1,395 Afghani ($20)”. They were together when the Taliban fighters rounded them up.

The fighters took photographs of the young men before torturing them.

“They cut off his nose and his ear, fingers, and toes, in front of my eyes. I managed to run away from there,” explains Azeem.

The panic on his face creeps into his voice as he recalls that day. He looks around to see who can hear him. His voice breaks, but he continues.

He fled Kabul on August 17, within 48 hours of the Taliban encircling the Afghan capital.

Azeem’s father had to borrow money from a neighbour to pay for his son’s journey to safety, which took two days and three nights of non-stop travel.

At Spin Boldak, Pakistani border control guards initially refused him entry because he had neither the ID card nor refugee paperwork.

“I showed them this,” he says, pointing to a medical scan rolled up in his backpack, “[I] said I’m here for my life, please help me. My life is in danger, the Taliban are following me.”

He was fortunate enough to be allowed to enter.

But now finds himself destitute, in a strange country where he does not speak the language and cannot see a way forward.

“I had been sleeping outside the mosque near the bus station because I don’t know where to go and who to ask for help,” he told Al Jazeera of his first few days in Karachi.

“One of the rickshaw drivers told me about this compound and said more refugees are here, but I don’t know who to speak to.”

“I am worried about my future, what will be my destiny?” he asks. “Because I wanted to be an engineer. I want to learn and I want to do something.”

Shamayl, 44

Shamayl is a nurse’s aide, a job she has done for nearly 20 years.

She fled Afghanistan’s Baghlan province a month ago as Taliban fighters came to her town before taking the province on August 10.

They made it difficult for her to work, she says, or even be safe in her own home.

Shamayl travelled with her husband and daughter for four days, initially by bus then on foot, to reach Karachi.

The tall 44-year-old mother of two is gaunt, her features drawn and eyes red-rimmed from the stress of the last few weeks.

“When the Taliban came into our town, the entire atmosphere changed,” she says. “Because of them, there were bombs from the sky. Many were wounded.

“The Taliban made life so difficult...we had no choice but to come to Pakistan.

“I sent my 16-year-old son out to work because we were in debt.”

The Taliban took her eldest son while he was out for work - he is still missing.

“[The Taliban] break into homes… come in and take food, beat people in the house, and threaten us because we have a young daughter. She is 14. I am very scared for her,” says Shamayl.

“I had to protect her. My wish is to go to Canada or Turkey. My daughter is studying, I want her to continue studying. I want her to better her life.”

Her husband, who worked in a roadside kebab diner, was badly beaten by the Taliban. They broke both his knees.

“They don’t care if a man or woman is old or young, no respect, they will terrorise and physically assault [us]... If they see a young girl in the house they have ransacked, they will threaten to take the girl,” she says.

In Shamayl’s case, the Taliban threatened both her son and daughter.

“My son, they wanted to take for jihad [as a forced conscript] and the daughter to marry,” she explains.

“We realised we couldn’t live there any longer. We left quietly in the middle of the night.”

Since taking over Kabul, the Taliban’s official spokesman has dismissed the claim that the group is forcing women to marry its fighters as “baseless propaganda”.

Shamayl’s family decided to make their way to Karachi, they knew nobody there and had no documents to cross the border.

But they managed to enter the country that will now be their temporary home.

“I've been here for a month. And everything is expensive here. I’m not sure how we will survive,” she says.

“There is corona[virus], there are so many issues. I just want to go abroad. I went to the post office to send my application for Canada, America, and Turkey,” she says.

“I still haven’t heard back.”

Ahad, 50, sits leaning on an aluminum crutch he props in front of him, pushing his round glasses up as they slide down his nose.

He had lived in Karachi for nearly 20 years before returning to his country to serve in the Afghan armed forces after the US invasion in 2001.

As a proud Afghan citizen - no longer a refugee - he joined the Afghan National Army when US forces first started training them in December 2002.

Ahad says he wanted to serve his country, a place he felt he belonged to despite having barely lived there.

During his time as an Afghan soldier, he was posted to Kandahar, Zabul, Terenkot, Jalalabad, and others; he feels lucky to have had the opportunity to see different parts of his country.

Ten years passed in relative “peace” for Ahad, before the fight against the Taliban escalated.

“It’s not as if the army didn’t fight back, why should we give in to brutality?” he says.

“In the end, finally, they gave in to brutality,” he says with sadness in his eyes.

The fact that his life’s work ended within days is a huge loss for Ahad. But he is no stranger to loss.

The Taliban killed one of his brothers, who was also in the army, in the recent fighting.

“And another brother was killed five or six years ago and so was my father in a crossfire [between the Taliban and the Afghan national army],” he says.

He left Baghlan province about four months ago with his mother, wife, and children to get away from the mental torture and physical harassment that they had to endure at the hands of the Taliban fighters.

“In the night, when we would fall asleep, they would knock throughout the night - and demand we give them space in the house to sleep,” he says.

“The Taliban vandalised my door, the house walls, the glass windows, just because I was in the army. They left us so helpless, we didn’t know what to do.”

During the day, the fighters would summon him and insist he was working against Islam because he was working with foreigners. They would push him around.

He tried to reason with them, explaining to them that although foreigners had been paying his salary, he worked for his country.

“It wasn’t un-Islamic to work in the armed forces - I say La ilah ila Allah [the Muslim Shahada], you also say La ilah ila Allah - what is the difference?”

His reasoning did not convince them. So he knew he had no choice but to leave.

“I’m wearing this shirt, and I took one more set of clothing, locked up my house, and left for Karachi,” he says.

He chose not to carry his Afghan army identification card with him to avoid being identified as a former soldier at Taliban checkpoints.

Border control in Pakistan let him through because of his medical needs.

During his time as a soldier, he had sustained an injury to his leg, leaving him unable to walk without a crutch.

He says he is fortunate to have navigated the risks.

“I lived in Karachi before, I am back here. I don’t want to go back. There is nothing to go back to.”

Asadullah, 19

Two brothers from Kunduz city with their young families, each with a newborn baby, crossed the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan two weeks ago.

They had to leave their parents behind because they did not have enough money to pay for their journey.

One of the men is 19-year-old Asadullah, a man of slight build and heavy eyes.

He hopes they can save enough money in Karachi to send for their parents.

Asadullah’s wife’s family lives in Karachi, but he had never been to Pakistan before and speaks very little Urdu.

In Kunduz, he had started driving a rickshaw to try to get out of a cycle of unemployment and hunger.

So he was surprised when he found himself picked up by the Taliban and questioned brutally.

“They first hit me for days and wanted me to tell them what work I really did. I was just a rickshaw driver,” Asadullah says.

Normally, he says, “the Taliban didn’t bother those people who work in the bazaar, or hotels or small shops.

“Anyone who works in the army, the police, in the government, they won’t spare you.”

“The Taliban don’t care what you try to explain, they will pick you up if they want, and that’s it.

“At first, they will beat you up, and when you submit to them, they will force you to work with them,” he says as he looks down as if trying to find the words to express what he went through.

As the Taliban began setting up roadblocks on the roads out of Kunduz, the two families got on a night bus that brought them first to Kandahar and then to Spin Boldak.

They spent the four-day journey fearing the worst, that their bus would be stopped by the Taliban.

But it was not stopped, and they crossed.

The border officials allowed them entry because his wife’s family lives in Karachi.

They look forward to making it their new home.

“There is no war here, there is no fighting, it is good here,” he says.

Samiullah, 21

Samiullah is Asadullah’s elder brother.

As a butcher in Kunduz, he made a decent living, but the day-to-day fighting between the Taliban and the armed forces got too much for him.

“You can’t study, you can’t do business. Every day the fighting, the bombs, and air bombardment was getting worse and worse,” he recalls.

“The government forces and Taliban made it impossible for people like us. We had no choice but to leave. Innocent people were getting killed.”

Samiullah blames former President Ashraf Ghani’s overthrown government for the Taliban takeover.

“We were not happy under the Ashraf Ghani government. Ever since he took power, there has been more fighting, more war,” he says.

Samiullah came to Pakistan in search of peace and safety, he knows they were lucky to make it across without documents, so he wants to make it work for himself and his family.

He believes they can have a better life in Karachi and wants to work to save enough for his parents to join them.

“I don’t have a job yet, I need to find work. I am a butcher, I want to do that again,” he hopes.

In spite of his skills, his position is tenuous.

Pakistan said it is not currently registering any new refugees and, without paperwork, it will be difficult for him to find a job, and he knows that.

“We can’t do anything without ID cards. I only have paperwork from Afghanistan.”

Eating in Karachi is a gourmet's dream, with a seemingly endless selection of eateries: from the cosmopolitan finery of upmarket restaurants to the traditional delights served by street vendors. Among the most popular local dishes are nihari, a stew made from beef or lamb, and biryani; these are almost always accompanied by a variety of breads such as naan, paratha or chapati. After a rich, spicy meal it’s always nice to refresh the palate with one of the traditional desserts, a particular Pakistani favourite being kulfi (a variety of ice cream). Don’t forget to bring cash, as restaurants outside of the city centre may not take cards.

After a long day of sightseeing it can be nice to sit down in a cafe and relax with a cup of tea or coffee. You will notice that the city has plenty of cafes to choose from, due to the flourishing cafe culture of Karachi. You will find places offering tasty ice creams, hot beverages, and delicious pastries.

Saddar, the old area of the city, is home to a number of markets. Zainab Market and Bhori Bazaar are full of stalls selling handcrafted items such as woodwork, clothes, and leather garments. For jewellery, head for Sarafa Bazaar, which is a gold and silver market, whilst the Empress food market is great for spices and is worth a trip for the atmosphere alone. Aside from the souks, Zaibunnisa Street is lined with fashionable boutiques and jewellers, whilst Tariq Road in the neighbouring PECHS district has much of the same. Need a new carpet for the living room? Then head down to Abdullah Haroon Road, where you can pick up quality new or antique carpets from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. If the thought of haggling leaves you in a cold sweat, head to the Clifton and DHA areas, where you will find a number of malls which provide a range of brand name outlets in air-conditioned surroundings.

The northern areas are a sure winner, but before you start to plan out a trip, check out some do’s and don’ts of traveling to northern areas of Pakistan . The one thing common between all trips to the northern areas is that they officially kick off from either Lahore or Islamabad. Route from Karachi to Lahore via car

• Start your journey from Chaand Bibi Road to reach Johair Road, and then Jehangir Punthakey Road. Travel to Aga Khan III Road, more commonly known as Garden Road, and then take Manghopir Road. You will then reach Lyari Expressway. This journey will take around 15 minutes.
• From Lyari Expressway, reach Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway then follow Indus Highway/N-55 from there to National Highway 5. Then take Lodhran-Khanewal Expressway, moving on to Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway/M-3 to Link Ferozepur Road/Nalay Wali Sarak in Lahore. It will take approximately around 17 hours to cover 1,234 km and reach Lahore.
• Continue on Link Ferozpur Road to reach your destination in Lahore.

People usually stop over for a breather at Sadiqabad, after a 10-hour drive. You can stay for the night at any of the local hotels, resuming your journey the next morning. Remember to keep your original NIC, copies of car registration, and your driving licence with you.

Convenient travel options from Karachi to Lahore include taking Daewoo bus service because of its decent service quality and punctuality. It takes around 21 hours to reach Lahore from Karachi by bus. Daewoo bus service features comfortable seating and audio-visual entertainment. They also provide support for carrying luggage while traveling. Shalimar Express is named after the historical Shalimar Gardens. The train was the first fully air-conditioned service offered by Pakistan Railways and comprised 14 parlour coaches, with every coach consisting of 52 seats featuring comfortable elbow room and two televisions. The interior of the coach matched that of an aeroplane. The windows of the train were tinted black to keep the interior cool.

Shalimar Express also has the privilege of being the first train to get Pakistan Railway livery, which is used till now. Shalimar Express departs from Karachi Cantt at 6:00 in the evening and reaches Lahore Junction at 12:40 in the afternoon the next day.

Shalimar Express Train Ticket Price: A seat in the AC Business Class of Shalimar Express costs PKR 5,000 while a seat in the economy class costs PKR 1,800. The travel duration is 18 hours, 40 minutes. Shalimar Express departs from Lahore junction at 6:00 in the evening and reaches Karachi at 12:45 the next day.

Awam Express

Awam Express is the largest passenger train run by Pakistan Railways. The train runs from Karachi to Peshawar, and while it is cheaper than other trains, it takes longer to reach Lahore from Karachi. The train departs from Karachi Cantt station at 7:00 and reaches Lahore at 6:35 the next day.

Awam Express Train Ticket Price: The train ticket price of Awam Express from Karachi to Lahore is PKR 3,250, and the travel duration is 23 hours 35 minutes. An Economy class ticket, however, costs PKR 1,400 (berth). Awam Express departs from Lahore Junction to Karachi Cantt at 19:00 in the evening and reaches Karachi the next day at 18:15.

Allama Iqbal Express

Allama Iqbal Express is the oldest express train of Pakistan. It started its service in 1940 as Shaheen Express, departing from Karachi and reaching Sialkot via Faisalabad. Shaheen Express was renamed Allama Iqbal Express in 1985, to honor Pakistan’s national poet, Allama Iqbal.

Allama Iqbal Express Train Ticket Price: Allama Iqbal Express departs at 14:00 from Karachi Cantt and reaches Lahore at 10:25. It takes almost 21 hours to reach Lahore. The ticket price is PKR 1,400. Allama Iqbal Express departs from Lahore at 12:00 in the afternoon and reaches Karachi at 6:00 in the evening the next day.

Jinnah Express

Jinnah Express was launched on 30th March 2019. Its travel duration is around 17 hours with just three stops – Khanewal, Rohri, and Islamabad. Jinnah Express departs from Karachi Cantt station at 3 in the afternoon and reaches Lahore at 7:30 in the morning the next day.

Pak Business Express is one of the fastest passenger trains in Pakistan. It runs from Karachi to Lahore with 8-9 stops in between. Tezgam is a daily express train service which earlier ran between Karachi and Peshawar. The word “Tezgam” means a fast runner. The train’s route was later shortened to Karachi to Rawalpindi. It makes a stop at Lahore Junction while going to Rawalpindi and its timings from Karachi to Lahore are 5:30 pm to 12:50 am.

Tezgam Train Ticket Price: The fare for Tezgam AC Business Class is PKR 4,450 and PKR 1,450 for economy class.

Green Line is an air-conditioned VIP train service from Karachi Cantt to Lahore. It starts off its journey at 10:00 pm and arrives at 2:20 pm the next day in Lahore.

Green Line Train Ticket Price: The train ticket price from Karachi to Lahore is PKR 6,200 for AC Business Class. For Lahore to Karachi, the train departs from Lahore at 8:30 at night and reaches Karachi at 1:00 pm the next day.

Khyber Mail

Khyber Mail is a popular train service. The timing of Khyber Mail is from 10:15 in the morning, which is when it leaves Karachi Cantt, and 7:25 pm the next day, which is when it arrives in Lahore.

‘Road to Makkah' services launched at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport

In a significant development for pilgrims travelling to Makkah in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj, Karachi's Jinnah International Airport has been included in the landmark “Road to Makkah” project on the orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, sources said Friday.

Under the “Road to Makkah” project, special services for the pilgrims will be made available at the Karachi airport, making their journey to Hajj as hassle-free as possible. 

This initiative aims to streamline the immigration process for the pilgrims departing from Karachi, as opposed to completing it in Saudi Arabia.

Arrangements for the project at the Karachi airport are in the final stages. Upon implementation, pilgrims will no longer need to undergo immigration procedures at Jeddah and Madina airports in Saudi Arabia. Instead, immigration procedures will be conducted by Saudi aviation personnel stationed at the Karachi airport.

To accommodate Saudi immigration procedures, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has designated space for two dedicated counters.

This step is expected to expedite the immigration process for Pakistani pilgrims, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey for those embarking on the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj.

Earlier in the month, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman approved the establishment of the "Road to Makkah" project facility at the Karachi airport right away.

A two-member delegation from Saudi Arabia accompanied by Saudi Consul General in Karachi Faleh Al-Rehaili visited the Jinnah International Airport to inspect the facilities and discuss the arrangements for the "Road to Makkah" project.

The Saudi Arabian delegation also met the Airport Security Force, the Federal Investigation Agency, and the Customs authorities and held meetings with the technical teams to discuss the processing requirements and procedure.

The "Road to Makkah" project is already successfully operational at the Islamabad airport.

On May 16, 2023, the then-Saudi Arabia deputy interior minister, Dr Nasir Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Dawood, arrived in Pakistan on a two-day official visit to finalise and ink an agreement about the project.

Shahzad: Oh my God, I am so excited to welcome the incredible Motorsport Club of Pakistan (MCP) team, who have just completed an epic road trip from Karachi to London in 18 days! This adventurous journey, driving a Pakistani-registered Toyota Hilux Revo, culminated just in time for the Petrolheadonism Underground live show here at Wembley. Today, we have Ghazanfar Agha, Liaquat Malik, and Amir Butt with us to share their experiences. Let’s dive into their amazing adventure!

Meet the Team and Their Journey

Shahzad: Tell me about the journey, what inspired it, and introduce yourselves!

Ghazanfar Agha: Well, I’m Ghazanfar, this is Liaquat Malik, and this is Amir Butt. We started from Karachi 18 days ago. Originally, we planned to drive to Russia, specifically to St. Petersburg. However, due to the war and disruptions, we had to change our plans just three days before departure. We decided to head to London instead, taking a route that had never been done before.

Shahzad: When I saw your trip, I was astonished! Especially considering the route you took through Iran, which is often portrayed negatively in the media here in the UK.

Liaquat Malik: Iran was fabulous. The people were incredibly hospitable, and the roads were amazing. One gentleman even provided us with nearly 200 litres of diesel for free. The hospitality was unbelievable.

The Realities of the Road Trip

Shahzad: You covered nearly 10,000 kilometers. How did you manage the logistics of such a long journey?

Ghazanfar Agha: We tried to avoid driving at night, with only three exceptions to clear congested borders and make up ground. Generally, we drove during the day, leaving around noon, enjoying the weather and local cuisine.

Shahzad: That sounds well-planned. What were some of the highlights of your journey?

Amir Butt: Every part of the journey was fascinating, from the historical sites to the cultures and architecture. Iran, Turkey, Bosnia, and Montenegro were particularly impressive. We experienced local customs, especially during Ramadan, which was a unique aspect of our trip.

“Despite concerns about weather, geopolitics, and other obstacles, we didn’t face a single significant setback. It was all about having the will to push forward.”

Challenges and Triumphs

Shahzad: Tell us about any challenges you faced and how you overcame them.

Ghazanfar Agha: The toughest part was crossing certain borders, like the Iran-Turkey border, which took hours. But we were determined and received help from many kind people along the way. Despite concerns about weather, geopolitics, and other obstacles, we didn’t face a single significant setback.

Liaquat Malik: It was all about having the will to push forward. We didn’t let minor setbacks deter us. Our mantra was, “God is great; let’s see how it goes.”

Shezadi: The Trusted Hilux Revo

Shahzad: Why did you name your car Shezadi, and why choose a Toyota Hilux Revo?

Ghazanfar Agha: Shezadi means princess, and she behaved like one. The Hilux Revo was tough and reliable throughout the trip. We named her Shezadi because she took care of us, and we took care of her.

Shahzad: What are the plans for Shezadi now?

Ghazanfar Agha: We’re considering shipping her back to Pakistan, but we might bring her back to Europe for another leg of our journey. The original plan included Russia, so we might still complete that route.

Reflections and Future Plans

Shahzad: How does it feel to be in London after such an epic journey?

Liaquat Malik: It’s incredibly exciting. The journey was thrilling, and arriving in London feels like a fantastic climax to our adventure.

Shahzad: What advice would you give to others considering such a road trip?

Liaquat Malik: If you have the will, you can make it happen. The world is connected, and with technology like Google Maps, it’s much easier to navigate. Start with a smaller trip and build up your confidence.

Ghazanfar Agha: It’s important to have a positive attitude and be determined. We didn’t have every detail planned, but we figured it out as we went along.

They faced numerous challenges but overcame them with resilience and the support of kind strangers along the way. Pakistani pilgrims, under Makkah Route Initiative, leave Karachi for Saudi Arabia

KARACHI— Saudi Arabia has launched the Makkah Route Initiative for Pakistani pilgrims for this year’s Hajj at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. This is the second airport in Pakistan to benefit from the initiative, which is part of Saudi Arabia’s expansion plans to serve the Hajj pilgrims.

A group of Pakistani pilgrims, under the Makkah Route Initiative, left the southern port city of Karachi for Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Senior Saudi and Pakistani officials were present to see off the pilgrims at the Karachi airport, which is the second embarkation point in Pakistan for the initiative. Those who arrived at Karachi airport included Lt. Gen. Sulaiman Al-Yahya, chairman of the initiative’s Supervisory Committee and director general of Saudi Passports, Muhammad Kamran Khan Tessori, governor of Sindh Province, and Nawaf Al-Maliki, Saudi ambassador to Pakistan.

The Saudi authorities have approved last month the expansion of the initiative to the Karachi airport after Islamabad International Airport continued to remain the only embarkation point under this scheme for several years since launch of the service for the Pakistani pilgrims. A total of 35,500 pilgrims will use the Karachi airport in their lifetime spiritual journey under this initiative for the upcoming Hajj. The rest of the pilgrims under the scheme will depart from the Islamabad airport.

Meanwhile, t he first flight of pilgrims from Indonesia, under the Makkah Route Initiative, landed at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah on Sunday. They left earlier Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta for Saudi Arabia. Launched by the Ministry of Interior in 2017, the Makkah Route Initiative aims to streamline and enhance the Hajj journey for pilgrims. A total of 617,756 pilgrims from seven countries have benefited from the initiative until last Hajj. These countries also include Indonesia, Morocco, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Turkey and Côte d'Ivoire.

Karachi: The heartwarming story of a 19-year-old Pakistani girl getting a new lease on life after a successful heart transplant in India highlights how borders can be eased for humanitarian purposes and the challenges faced by heart patients in the neighbouring country.

Ayesha Rashan from Karachi underwent a heart transplant surgery at MGM Healthcare, Chennai.

After a suitable brain-dead donor was available, she underwent cardiac transplantation on January 31, 2024. Following procedures, she was discharged this month.

Dr K R Balakrishnan, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences Director, Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, said Ayesha first came to them in 2019 when she was 14 years of age with severe heart failure and a very poorly functioning heart.

“She became very sick and had a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated with CPR and put on a machine called ECMO to sustain circulation then we put in an artificial heart pump that time and eventually she recovered and went back to her country,” he said.

“Over the next couple of years, she became sick again because one of her valves started leaking…and she developed severe failure on the right side of the heart and developed an infection and it became very difficult to treat her in that country,” he added.

Balakrishnan said getting a visa for her was very difficult.

“Her mother is a single mother, they had no money or resources. We had to take care of the entire expenses including repeated hospitalisation,” Dr Balakrishnan told PTI Videos.

Ayesha underwent surgery with the support of Aishwarya Trust, a Chennai-based NGO, and other transplant patients’ contributions.

The transplant was done after getting a donor organ from a brain-dead elderly man from Delhi.

“The biggest challenge was there was no money,” he said. The condition required Rs 30 to Rs 40 lakhs to treat.

“The hospital is a private hospital. And so we had to raise money through the trust, through our own resources and generous patients. So that was a huge challenge. And these are high-risk procedures where the outcomes are not predictable. But we had to do it because otherwise, this young girl would not have survived,” he said.

Ayesha, who aspires to be a fashion designer, thanked the Indian government for giving her a visa to visit the country for the treatment.

Ayesha’s mother said the problem is that Pakistan does not have such a facility.

Ayesha is not the first Pakistani to get a heart transplant in India.

Muhammad Amir, whose name changed on request, was 37 years old in 2014 when cardiologists in Karachi told him that he was suffering from ‘dilated cardiomyopathy’, a disease in which chambers of the heart become dilated and muscles get weak, impairing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively to the rest of the body.

“Doctors managed my condition with medication, but they told me a transplant was the only cure,” Amir, now 46 told The News International, following reports of Ayesha receiving a successful heart transplant in India.

“Through online research, I discovered a heart transplant centre in Chennai, India, where I received a new heart from an anonymous Indian donor in 2014.”

Amir isn’t alone. Qari Zubair, an imam from Gujrat, was the first Pakistani to travel to Chennai for a heart transplant. Sadly, he developed complications and did not survive.

“According to my knowledge, around six Pakistanis have undergone heart transplants in India,” Amir said, preferring to keep personal details private.

“I’m the longest survivor. Four others passed away after their transplants,” he said.

Several transplant and cardiac surgeons cite a lack of expertise, high costs, limited post-operative care, and a shortage of deceased donors as the primary reasons for the absence of a heart transplant programme in Pakistan.

“The two main reasons we don’t perform heart transplants are the lack of deceased donors (transplant hearts can only be taken from deceased individuals) and a lack of expertise,” said renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr Faisal Saud Dar.

Dr Dar, dean and CEO of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center in Lahore, emphasised the importance of raising awareness about organ donation after death to save lives.

Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Pervaiz Chaudhry believes heart transplants will become a reality in Pakistan soon.

He has asked the authorities to define “brain death” in Pakistan, facilitating requests for organ donation from deceased individuals, the report said.

“While I understand heart transplants are complex and expensive, travelling to India for such procedures is a huge burden. I wish we had our own centres offering transplants at free or affordable rates to save more lives,” he said.

Pakistani lawmaker Syed Mustafa Kamal drew a comparison between India's achievements and the precarious situation in Karachi, by mentioning India's moon landing mission. The Muttahida Quami Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) leader said that while India is landing on the moon, Karachi is making news of children being killed by falling in open gutters.

"Today, the condition in Karachi is that, while the world is going to the moon, children are dying by falling into gutter in Karachi. On the same screen, there is news that India landed on the moon, and just after two seconds, the news is that a child died in an open gutter in Karachi," Kamal said in his address to the Parliament on Wednesday.

He further highlighted the lack of fresh water in Karachi. The MQM-P leader also said citing a report that there are 70 lakh children in Karachi and over 2.6 crore children in Pakistan, who are not able to go to schools.

"Karachi is the revenue engine of Pakistan. The two seaports operational in Pakistan since its inception, are both in Karachi. We (Karachi) are the gateway to the entire Pakistan, Central Asia to Afghanistan...For 15 years, Karachi was not given even a bit of fresh water. Even the water that came, the tanker mafia hoarded it and sold it to the people of Karachi," Kamal said.

"We have a total of 48,000 schools, but a new report says that out of that 11,000 are 'ghost schools'. 70 lakh children in Sindh don't go to school and a total of 2,62,00,000 children in the country don't go to school...if we just focus on this, the leaders of the country shouldn't even get proper sleep," the Pakistani Parliamentarian added.

In August last year, India's Chandrayaan-3 lander became the first spacecraft from the country to safely reach the lunar surface in August 2023.

India also became the first country in the world to land on the South Pole of the moon.

Meanwhile, Pakistan -- which is grappling with economic distress, high inflation, and mounting debt -- is seeking a new loan programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

A team of the global lender is currently in Pakistan to hold talks on the issue. It has urged Islamabad to bring "strong cost-side reforms" to restore the viability of the country's energy sector, reported ARY News. It has also urged an 'overhaul' of its tax system.

Planting hope — an artist’s upside-down solution to Karachi’s air pollution

Welcome to Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling economic hub, where not only has the struggle for necessities like public transport and clean water become a daily battle, but the rising air pollution has made breathing difficult too. Amid these difficulties, one artist has proposed an innovative solution to combat the city’s increasingly unbreathable air: planting air purifiers in homes.

Fayaz Baloch, who hails from Kalat, Balochistan, fondly recalled his upbringing in a house adorned with a vast garden, where discussions about plants were commonplace during evening teas.

Reflecting on his journey, Baloch shared: “I was a rebellious teenager until an almond tree taught me patience.” Breaking into a smile, he reminisced, “It just stood there, enduring the changing seasons, adapting to survive storms, heatwaves, and harsh winters. Sometimes it looked mesmerising, other times bare.”

Baloch’s perspective further solidified when he moved to Karachi for the Taaza Tareen Residency offered by Vasl Artists’ Association , delving into the city’s historic neighbourhoods with a mission to address the challenges confronting local communities. During his exploration, one observation stood out — the glaring absence of green spaces and plants.

Moreover, the poor air quality that pervaded the city’s atmosphere became increasingly evident to Baloch with each passing day.

Based on the Air Quality Index (AQI), Karachi’s current air quality registers at 98 US AQI . The AQI serves as a universal metric endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), allowing for comparisons of air pollution levels across different cities worldwide. At this level, the air quality in Karachi is classified as moderate, indicating that it is generally acceptable. However, individuals with respiratory conditions may experience some difficulty breathing particularly during the winter months when the quality becomes much worse.

Karachi’s green revolution

To tackle these challenges, the solution seemed straightforward — Karachi’s grey cemented spaces needed a splash of greenery. With this idea in mind, Baloch set out to explore the city.

During one of his expeditions to Jodia Bazaar, a bustling local market, the artist stumbled upon a unique sight. In a small shop tucked away in the chaos, the owner had ingeniously suspended his collection of kettles from the ceiling. “It intrigued me how he utilised every inch of his space,” the artist remarked, captivated by the creative use of such a seemingly mundane setting.

Another thing that caught his attention was the abundance of towering skyscrapers, each seemingly striving to outdo the other in height. Among them, the structures under construction stood out with their wooden scaffolding giving an illusion of the building, set to grace the skyline in a matter of months.

“In Karachi, land is a precious commodity, nobody wants to give up even 25 square feet space for a neem tree which grows well in Karachi’s environment without any need of special care because why would they loose out on millions of rupees,” Baloch noted.

In recent years, Karachi, often dubbed the “city of lights,” has undergone a dramatic transformation, marked by rapid progress. However, alongside this urban evolution, there’s a decline in the city’s natural spaces. “What Karachiites fail to realise is that humans can’t live without nature,” he lamented.

A conversation and a solution

“With this vision, I wanted a common person to talk about the environment and understand the problem,” said Baloch. To ensure relatability, he decided to incorporate scaffolding structures —a familiar sight for every resident of the city.

However, merging these structures with plants posed a challenge.

The search led him to Hydroponics Pakistan Company , which introduced him to aeroponics — the practice of growing plants in air or misty environments without the use of soil.

“The NASA-approved plants require no soil, which helps in avoiding the health risks that come with the use of insects and pesticides,” explained Khalid Fazli, head of research and development, at Pakistan Hydroponics.

He elaborated that these plants are primarily designed for indoor spaces. “They’re like air purifiers, but even more effective as they not only cleanse the air but also replenish it with oxygen.”

“These plants typically grow upwards, but for the artist’s vision, we displayed them upside down,” Fazli noted.

Anybody can plant them in their homes; the only worry is that they require a nutrient-enriched solution and a small water pumping motor that can regularly supply the plant with the mist it needs.

“When you water the soil once, it retains the water and provides it to the plant as needed; as there is no soil here, the water needs to be provided to it in regular intervals,” Fazli added.

“I suspended the plants upside down to capture the interest of ordinary individuals and spark conversations. It proved to be effective; as soon as people noticed the downward-facing leaves, they approached me to inquire about the unusual display and its significance,” said Baloch, recalling the two days his installation was displayed at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

“The climate is changing rapidly, the reality is that we can’t stop progression but what we can do is think innovatively — ‘Future Gardens: Utopian Solution for Uncertain Future’ was exactly about that,” Baloch emphasised.

However, innovation is not the solution to this problem.

“These plants are a step forward, but let’s not mistake them for a victory,” remarked environmentalist Tofiq Pasha Mooraj. “If we become content with these artificial substitutes that look like pictures on a wall, then we risk losing real trees, birds, and flowers.”

Mooraj stressed that the true solution lies in reclaiming green spaces and safeguarding the ones we have. “These plants are not trees yet; it will take time for them to reach that stage. In the meantime, we must shield ourselves from the imminent threat, such as the ongoing environmental degradation, by taking small steps like reducing plastic usage.”

As Karachi navigates its path toward a sustainable future, Baloch’s vision serves as a reminder that the solutions to our most pressing challenges often lie at the intersection of creativity, perseverance, and a deep reverence for the natural world. His story is a testament to the power of art to inspire change and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
