Dwarf Journey Review

Dave Ozzy

Dwarf Journey is a diamond. It’s a diamond in the ‘diamond in the rough’ sense, as we had zero expectations from it: it was yet another rogue-lite platformer in a cavern full of them. But it’s also a diamond in the concentrated-carbon sense. This is a game that takes the very small amount of gameplay that it has on offer, but refines it to the degree that every moment is dense and enjoyable, and it becomes a tiny, high-carat example of the genre.

Stop us if you’ve heard this before. You are a warrior, in this case a dwarf king, who has come to the deepest, most dangerous dungeon in the kingdom to test your mettle. There are four consecutive levels to the dungeon, each ending with a boss, and you have to see how far you can get before dying. And you will die. But dying isn’t the end of everything: you will have gathered enough resources and experience from the dungeon that you’ll be in better stead for the next run.

dwarf journey review 1

It really is the 101 of roguelike dungeon-crawling. We can’t really defend it in innovation terms. We’re desperately scrabbling around for something that Dwarf Journey does new, but the closest we can get is that you play a dwarf. And that the game is short.

Your dungeon run starts in the Echoing Cave. The levels are procedurally generated, and the first room is a safe one, where you will make your first move in one of the cardinal directions to hunt for the boss room. There’s a Metroid-like map in the top-right corner that displays the series of boxes that you will be moving through.

Hopping through a door will close all the exits, so you need to kill all the enemies to proceed. There are goblins that charge, goblins that chuck rocks at you, lunging bats and slugs that merrily wander their way around the walls of the level. So, you’re using your reasonably stumpy sword to cut into them, jumping out of the way of their attacks, and nursing your health bar.

Combat could have done with a bit more depth, especially as you have a single attack and no blocks or blinks to speak of. But your jump is versatile enough that it bridges the gap a little. You can double-jump, cling to walls for a wall-jump, and generally mix up the height of your leap. It’s all extremely responsive, too, and we got to the point where we could weave around arcing bats without taking a hit.

You might not want to progress from a room immediately after massacring everyone, as there’s a fair amount of loot around. Seams of ore can be mined for metals, and chests burst open with even more. You can dump the ore into mine carts (slightly rarer), which is regularly the right idea, as death means you lose all of the ore that you had on you. And – best of the bunch – there are occasional idol-like constructions that you can raid for weapon, armour and rune recipes, or temporarily boost your four main stats: Vitality, Strength, Agility and Luck.

dwarf journey review 2

Keep hunting through procedurally generated rooms (which, as it goes, are in that sweet spot of feeling varied, without feeling like they were randomly placed by an AI) and you’ll get to the boss room, which spans from goblin kings to infernal dragons, crystalline golems and armadillos. These are fine enough, containing a sequence of attacks that will decimate you on the first run, but will become trivial as you learn the pattern. And then you’re onto the next level, hopping from caves to lava tunnels to crystal caverns all over again.

Die and you’re back to the hub, the Refuge of Immortality, where you can make all manner of improvements to your dwarf. Your first stop will be to level up, and you will have swathes of points to spend. We’d get four or five level ups per run, so you can really feel the difference each time you play, which is essential for a finely tuned roguelike. Strength means you hit harder, Vitality allows you to take more hits, Agility makes you faster, and Luck triggers critical hits more often.

You can pop to the blacksmithy to create weapons and armours from your newly found recipes, and then improve them further, all of which requires the ore that you’ve mined. Again, in most runs you will be creating or upgrading gear one or two times over, so you will feel the difference. And then you’re over to the runes, which give you passive buffs for your character, with a greater number of slots for runes as you level up. These are awesome, truly transformative, giving you hefty improvements like life-regen whenever you kill an enemy, an extra life, and the chance of double-hits. Those three were our favourites, and they got us to the end with gusto. A merchant also turns up at level three, offering you some one-time unlocks and the ability to trade for different ores.

It’s relatively easy to pinpoint why we liked Dwarf Journey so much. Runs are short, and you’re quickly back at the hub, making several improvements to your dwarf. Those improvements are near-exponential, so you’re playing through again and feeling buff. Enemies that were tough are now taking one or two hits, and you’ve swiftly become a killing machine. Sure, you’re repeating old floors, but they’re quickly in your slipstream. The knowledge that the next run is going to become even easier is superbly satisfying, and keeps you replaying, and we looked to drain our run of every last metally drop, so that we could ramp up as much as possible.

dwarf journey review 3

And, while combat is simple, there’s an elegance to it. Your dwarf is a nimble, parkouring little dude, and controlling him becomes second nature. You can dismiss everyone in a room with three or four little double jumps, and then crash to the floor with a superhero landing. It’s all rather satisfying.

There are a few rusty links to the chain, but they’re nothing overly damaging. It’s not going to last you for longer than four hours, we would say, but the enjoyment is so concentrated that it’s almost a non-issue. The economy of the game also goes a bit haywire in the latter game: you stop needing certain types of ore, and Dwarf Journey introduces new ore that is frustratingly hard to get hold of. You’ve got the merchant to convert ores, but it’s a little slow to use and unsatisfying.

Dwarf Journey is small, short and completely lacking in innovation, but it concentrates your time with it into a thunderingly enjoyable burst. If you’re tired of every game wanting to be your new best friend, offering hundreds of hours of sprawl, tempting you back with numerous progression systems, events and live services, then Dwarf Journey is your game. It’s a tiny diamond: a refined experience that sparkles for the short time you spend with it.

You can buy Dwarf Journey from the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Dwarf Journey Review

Dwarf Journey

Dwarf Journey is an enjoyable short rogue-lite but it has some horrible grindy achievements which can leave a bad taste for completionists. Beating the game took 7 hours, completing the grindy achievements added 4 more hours.

Steam

Approximate amount of time to 100%: 11h Estimated achievement difficulty: 5/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 1 Is there a good guide available: No, but you don’t need a guide Multiplayer achievements: No Missable achievements: No Grinding Achievements: Yes, very very grindy. I’ll explain more below. DLC-Only achievements: No Time-gated achievements: No RNG-achievements: For one you need a little bit of luck Does difficulty affect achievements: No difficulty option Unobtainable/glitched achievements: No

Dwarf Journey is an enjoyable rogue-lite that isn’t too long and eases the players into the game. The game has 4 biomes, all with an end boss. You collect experience and ore during your run. Ore is used to making gear and upgrade it. When you die you lose all the ore you’ve with you. In the first biome, you have a lot of opportunities to store your ore, so that if you die you don’t lose too much. This way a run always feels rewarding, because it will help you toward becoming stronger, even when the run didn’t go so well.

Every time when I entered a new biome, it felt like a new challenge. The monsters are stronger and you have to learn their abilities. But with some practice and upgrading your gear and stats it would be doable. The second boss gave me a bit of a challenge and especially the fourth boss. That one took me many tries.

I liked most of the achievements in Dwarf Journey. You get them for smashing pots/crates, eating meat, upgrading gear, killing monsters. The normal stuff you would expect in this type of game with no missable achievement. What I really dislike is how grindy the last 3 achievements are. For me, those were dying X amount of times and eating 500 meat. I combined those 2 by starting a run and if the first boss wasn’t within 3/4 rooms I would instantly go back to town, which gladly counts as a death. Otherwise, I would go for the boss because the chest that you get afterward gives 1 or 2 meat. After getting to the 500 meat it took me another 30 minutes of restarting a run instantly after entering it, which was possible to do 5/6 times per minute. But those last 3 achievements took me 4 hours after completing the game. This sucks because I enjoyed the game a lot before those 4 hours of grinding, but the last memory of a completionist will be of a boring grind with those arbitrary achievements. which leaves a bad taste while the rest of the game was a lot of fun.

Dwarf Journey on now.gg lets you jump into a world where your skill in crafting and fighting shapes your success. In this game, you play as Gallar, a warrior on a quest for eternal life, exploring deep caves and battling fierce monsters.

Every round, the game changes – new maps, new enemies. That’s why picking the right gear or build is key. It makes Gallar stronger and ready for whatever comes next.

In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a strong build for Gallar that boosts his chances of surviving tough fights and grabbing that prize of immortality.

The Basics of Dwarf Journey

dwarf journey review

In this adventure game , players can battle enemies, search for treasures, and create powerful gear. The game revolves around three main actions: exploring, battling, and forging.

While exploring, players uncover new areas and gather resources. Battling involves fighting monsters to gain experience and loot. Forging lets players create weapons and armor from materials they find.

A key aspect of the game is building your character, Gallar. A build is a combination of weapons, armor, runes, and skill points that define how Gallar performs in the game.

Different builds can make Gallar faster, stronger, or more durable, affecting how you tackle challenges and enemies. Choosing the right build can make a big difference in your success.

Tip: Experiment with different builds to find one that suits your playstyle and helps you progress faster.

Components of a Strong Build

dwarf journey review

Creating a strong build for Gallar in Dwarf Journey is crucial for succeeding in your adventures. Here’s how to make Gallar powerful and ready for any challenge:

The choice of weapon dramatically influences how you play. Each weapon suits different styles. For example, a sword might be fast but less powerful than a hammer, which is slower but hits harder.

Choose a weapon that feels good for how you like to play – whether you prefer quick strikes or heavy blows.

Armor boosts Gallar’s ability to withstand attacks. More robust armor can help Gallar last longer in fights, especially against tough bosses. However, heavier armor might slow Gallar down, so balance protection with mobility based on your playing style.

Runes are special items that enhance Gallar’s abilities. Some runes might increase attack power, while others boost defense or speed. It’s important to pick runes that complement your weapon and armor choices, enhancing Gallar’s strengths or offsetting weaknesses.

Skill Points

As Gallar levels up, you’ll earn skill points to distribute among attributes like strength, agility, and vitality. Strength improves attack power, agility boosts speed and evasion, and vitality increases health.

Distributing these points effectively is crucial. Think about whether Gallar needs to hit harder, move faster, or survive longer in battles and allocate points accordingly.

When putting together a build, consider what challenges you face most often in the game. A balanced approach where you enhance Gallar’s strengths and protect against his weaknesses can often be more effective than focusing solely on one aspect.

Tip: Keep tweaking your build as you progress. Sometimes, a small change in weapons or runes can make a big difference in battles.

Recommended Strong Build

dwarf journey review

For a strong build that keeps Gallar alive and kicking in this pixel game , focus on these:

  • Weapon : Choose something that hits fast. Speed is life. You can use Harbinger of Death.
  • Armor : Go with gear that offers a balance of protection and mobility, like Solar Crust.
  • Runes : The Vampiric rune is a game-changer. It heals Gallar every time he hits an enemy, which is perfect for staying alive in longer fights. You can also go for Berserk and Robustness.

This build is all about staying tough and fast. Less damage means less downtime and more fighting.

With the Vampiric rune, every hit Gallar lands gives him some health back, turning every scrap into a chance to recover. It’s about making Gallar a tough target that keeps getting tougher the longer he fights.

Tip: This build works best when you’re constantly on the move, hitting enemies and avoiding damage, so keep your gameplay active and aggressive.

Advanced Tips and Tricks

dwarf journey review

Getting ahead in Dwarf Journey isn’t just about swinging your axe – it’s about smart play. First, know when to fight bosses. Don’t rush in – make sure you’re geared up and ready.

Managing your resources like ores and rune stones is crucial. Use what you find wisely to craft better gear or trade for what you need. The game’s environment can also be a big help. Use narrow spots and obstacles to dodge enemies or make them line up for attacks.

Adjusting your build as you play is key. If a strategy isn’t working, or you find powerful new gear, switch things up. Maybe you start off needing more armor but later find a rune that boosts your dodging, letting you switch to lighter armor and move faster.

Always be ready to adapt based on the challenges you face and the resources you gather.

Tip: Always have an escape plan when exploring new levels or facing tough enemies, and don’t be afraid to retreat and regroup.

Ratings and Reviews

Good loop. ui needs work.

Its a fun game. Nice to have a rougelite more like Rogue Legacy than Dead Cells. However, the UI does not take the iPhone notch into account and important parts of the interface are obscured when playing the game with the notch on the left side. I use a Backbone controller to play this game so having the left is the only option. Would also be great if the game was aware of the controller and would hide the touch UI

Great game with increasingly more obvious drawbacks

Ok, let me start by saying, that I found the first few hours playing this game really fun, and if it weren’t for these issues that I’m about to talk about, I would probably be giving this a higher rating. I am a huge rogue like fan, started with Dead Cells, and now I have, like, twenty and counting. And when I saw that there seemed to be another one for the collection, I was extremely excited. I downloaded the game and found the beginning very fun, interesting leveling up mechanics, I was into it… …Until I reached the level cap… Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a difficult game, but having to, basically, face the same brick wall with a different combination of these 50 levels, just trying to get some progress, having to face the same levels, with the same enemies. Now, I know a rogue like is supposed to be somewhat repetitive at some point in the progression. But this game reached that point, A LOT quicker than other titles I have played. If the developers added some level diversion, like those similar to that of Soul Knight, that would greatly extend the game’s ability to be entertaining for longer. But, anyway, that all that I have to say about this game, the general game mechanics are nice, but the same levels and the same enemies without any diversion can get dull very quickly.

From the beginning

Fun game! I wish I didn’t have to start over from the beginning when I die. How about an option to start at the level you died?

Q&A With Orube Game Studio

Pursuing a new upcoming video game experience currently under development, another two games that I have had my eye on for a long time is Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey.  Both developed by Orube Game Studio based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Super Mombo Quest, in development since 2018, is a colouful Metroidvania inspired by the like of Super Meat Boy heavy on combat that requires players to string together combos reminiscent of classic arcade fighting games, similar to Guacamelee or Dust: An Elysian Tail. Dwarf Journey, on the other hand, is an action-adventure Roguelite inspired by Norse mytholgoy and that incorporates heavy RPG elements, such as levelling up the player character and collecting materials in order to forge stronger equipment. With both games set for release in the early part of 2021, I was curious to find out more about these two great-looking games, I got in touch with Orube Studio and their founder Pedro Savino to pose a few questions about the games and what players can come to expect from the final builds. Here’s what Pedro Savino had to say about Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey.

What were the influences behind your games? Our biggest inspiration is to keep in mind that we can bring the playful spirit of games to any type of person, through simple, affordable, and super fun products. As ours are platform games, we have to mention our biggest influences: Super Mario World, Super Meat Boy, Celeste, and Kirby. All of these have incredible mechanics and game feel that were certainly inspiring for our games.

What has the developmental process been like? It’s been great! We are a team of eight people who work remotely and we are all passionate about what we do. Always seeking to learn more and grow together.

How close are we to seeing the finished products? Both games are almost ready to be released. Only a few artistic details are missing. We are already testing the final versions with people from our Discord server to make everything with the best experience possible.

What has been the most exciting aspect of developing both games? The most exciting part is seeing the number of people that we are captivating with our games that haven’t even been released yet. There are people who have been accompanying us for a long time, giving feedback and supporting our work. It is very gratifying to receive this support.

What has been the most challenging aspect of developing both games? The biggest challenge, I believe, is to manage everything so that all we’ve planned for comes out in the best way possible. The challenge in Super Mombo Quest, for example, is making this huge game a reality. The final version will have approximately two hundred and fifty levels. We are producing the biggest game ever made by the company!

How well have both games been received so far? We were surprised by the number of people who were captivated by our games. At TikTok, for example, we were able to build a community of more than 30k people, and we brought over 1,5k to our Discord server. They are always supporting the development, giving feedback, and testing versions so that everything is fine.

What platforms are you looking to bring the games to? We are looking to bring them to computers (at Steam), Mobiles (Android and iOS), and consoles (such as Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation).

Have there been any ideas at this stage of development that have since been scrapped or reworked where both games are concerned? Throughout the development process, there were things that didn’t work and that needed to be redone. In Super Mombo Quest, for example, we changed the main currency of the game and the mechanics related to it in the middle of development.

Has the studio been mindful of the influx of Metroidvania and rogue-lite titles within the indie scene in order to make this game stand out among the many others?

We produce games that we have had in mind for a long time. The character Mombo, for example, appeared in my graduation work. We developed and learned more about platformers, which today is one of our specialties. But we are always attentive to trends and trying to predict what will be best received by the public.

If you had the opportunity to develop a game with any company or any franchise, which would it be, and why? Aiming high, I believe with Nintendo. It is a company with young spirited games that inspired me a lot and were part of my youth.

What’s next for Orube Game Studios following the release of Dwarf Journey and Super Mombo Quest? We still don’t know for sure how the next project will be, but we intend it to be one of the big ones. You will have to follow us on social media to find out!

Are there any other genres of gaming that Orube Game Studios have thought of working on in the future? We are planning to make a multiplayer RPG. There is nothing right yet, but it’s a wish that we have for the near future.

Do you have any advice for aspiring developers that may be reading this? Currently, Super Mombo Quest has more than two hundred levels, which we consider to be a large scope. However, before producing it, we released several smaller games. The main tip for those who are starting is: make small and simple games. Understand the process and be very aware of how long it takes to produce a game. A game of scope or complexity greater than the team’s capacity can take a long time to produce, increasing its cost and reducing the chances of profit. Sometimes it even happens that the project is not launched because there is no budget to complete, or even that the producers give up on development.

Where on the Internet can people find you? You can find us on Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram @OrubeGameStudio! You can join our Discord server too. Here is our Linktree so you can find us everywhere https://linktr.ee/orubegamestudio.

Do you have anything else to add? I think that for those who are looking to live from games, it’s important to know that it’s a very competitive market. Currently, it’s difficult to undertake in the area without having accumulated prior knowledge, much because of the lack of incentives in the sector in some countries. On the other hand, we have an industry under construction and with a lot of potential. More and more companies are consolidating and creating job opportunities for those looking to work in the environment. The game market is growing and will grow for many years to come. With intelligence, dedication, and a little creativity, it is possible to live from games!

I’d like to thank Pedro for taking the time out to answer what questions I have as well as providing a very unique insight into the competition that comes with taking the plunge into indie development. It has indeed become an extremely competitive market over the last few gaming generations, as I have witnessed firsthand, but both Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey look to be strong competitors in the plethora of indie games in their genres and I wish them the best of luck with them both, and I hope you guys enjoyed learning more about these two potentially game-changing titles.

Polin’s Love Story in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Part 1 Delivers Glow-Ups, Deception and Some Super Sultry Moments: TV Review

Bridgerton. (L to R) Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington, Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton in episode 302 of Bridgerton. Cr. Liam Daniel/Netflix © 2024

Netflix ‘s acclaimed 19th century-set “ Bridgerton ” has returned for the first half of its third season, and it’s more lush and enticing than audiences might remember. Season 3 opens as a new crop of debutantes enter the marriage market. As the young ladies prepare to dazzle Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), the latest Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) gossip pamphlet is being distributed. In Season 3 Part 1, familiar faces are spotlighted, new and evolving friendships flourish and blossoming romances infuse an air of freshness into the show. The catalyst for all this change begins with the metamorphosis of Penelope Featherington (a stellar Nicola Coughlan ).

Popular on Variety

The chemistry between the leads in “Bridgerton” and “Queen Charlotte” has consistently been praised. Still, there is something about seeing the bond between Colin and Penelope transform from comfortably platonic to yearning and passionate that elevates this journey.  Coughlan and Newton have always had a beautiful rapport, but watching Colin realize he desires Penelope sexually, which is revealed through his fixation on her lips and a newfound fascination with everything she’s doing, creates a sparkling tension throughout Part 1 that threatens to burst off the screen. In fact, during a carriage ride after a ball at the end of Episode 4, “Old Friends,” it nearly does.

As usual, diversity is at the forefront of “Bridgerton.” This season, the Mondrichs, Alice (Emma Naomi) and Will (Martins Imhangbe), are no longer relegated to the sidelines. Moreover, differently abled members of the Ton are showcased, including a deaf debutant and a wheelchair-bound Lord. This inclusivity reinforces Shondaland and Netflix’s commitment to bringing all six Bridgerton siblings’ love stories to the screen while addressing and representing a 21st-century viewing audience.

Also, though Polin is kept firmly in the spotlight, new showrunner Jess Brownell and her writers serve up some juicy subplots. They take the time to reveal some of the layers of characters who had previously been on the fringes of the narrative. Francesca (Hannah Dodd replacing Ruby Stokes), the pianoforte-loving sixth Bridgerton sibling, is also making her debut on the marriage market. While she’s just as stunning and poised as her older sister, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), Francesca has her own unique ideas regarding love and partnership.

Like Pen, the blonde and statuesque Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen) is trying to snag a husband for the third year in a row. Despite her sour disposition, audiences learn that there is more to Cressida than her snide remarks and competitive nature. Like all of the women in the Ton, the future trajectory of her life depends on her getting a suitable marriage proposal, which is no small feat. As usual, Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) are bending the Ton to their will in the background, but it’s Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) who gets to do much more than mothering this season.

“Bridgerton” Season 3, Part 1 marks the beginning of Polin’s electric romance, but that’s merely the core of the story. Going after what you desire is the theme that anchors these initial four episodes. Though various characters approach this tactic in a plethora of different ways, watching Penelope choose herself (and Lady Whistledown) even when she’s uncertain about the outcome is extremely heartening.  Additionally, it’s a reminder that even if you get exactly what you want, it might come at a cost.

All episodes of “Bridgerton” Season 3 Part 1 are streaming on Netflix .

Rats, Gardens, and Stories from a "Post-Impact" Future

Rats as you’ve never seen them; the journey of restoring a garden; stories from a “post-Impact” future

By Maddie Bender , Lucy Tu & Alan Scherstuhl

Covers of three books

Stowaway: The Disreputable Exploits of the Rat by Joe Shute. Bloomsbury Wildlife, 2024 ($26)

New Yorkers will recall a sanitation commissioner’s now infamous proclamation: “The rats don’t run this city. We do.” Rat chroniclers often show disdain toward their subjects, but in Stowaway, journalist Joe Shute positions himself instead as a kind of Lorax, speaking for the rats when few others will. He guides readers down sewers, into bustling (rat-filled) metropolises and through mounds of research in pursuit of a deeper understanding of rats and, by extension, humans. Shute’s earnest, playful descriptions of these creatures—“a shadow of us,” “the ultimate transgressors”—betray some bias. But his enthusiasm spreads easily, much like the ultrasonic laughter that his pet rats, Molly and Ermintrude, make when tickled. — Maddie Bender

The Garden against Time: In Search of a Common Paradise by Olivia Laing. W. W. Norton, 2024 ($27.99)

When the COVID pandemic shuttered communal outdoor spaces, author Olivia Laing began restoring a private 18th-century garden in Suffolk, England. Her memoir alternates between vignettes of this restoration process—from uprooting obnoxious nettles to planting floors of wallflowers—and thoughtful research on the cultural significance of reconstructing Eden. As Laing guides readers through the exclusionary history of plant domestication and land ownership, she seeks to transform her garden into a place of universal refuge. Written in lyrical prose that almost begs to be sung, this book offers captivating insights into “the cost of building paradise.” — Lucy Tu

Honeymoons in Temporary Locations by Ashley Shelby. University of Minnesota Press, 2024 ($22.95)

Unsettling and satirical, this collection of stories and errata from a “post-Impact” near future considers life amid escalating climate disasters, focused on the lived experience of change as it’s happening. Freighters relocate Arctic life to the Antarctic; “Internally Displaced Persons of Means” flee America’s coasts and head to heartland Resettlement Zones; and a pharmaceutical company offers Climafeel, “a recombinant DNA biologic that blunts the effects of solastalgia,” the psychological distress afflicting survivors in a world upended. Writer Ashley Shelby’s storytelling is brisk, sharp-elbowed and deeply empathetic, even as she experiments with a host of forms, including the brochure text for a cruise to flooded cities. — Alan Scherstuhl

Adultery Gets Weird in Miranda July’s New Novel

An anxious artist’s road trip stops short for a torrid affair at a tired motel. In “All Fours,” the desire for change is familiar. How to satisfy it isn’t.

ALL FOURS, by Miranda July

Erica Jong’s Isadora Wing feared flying , but womanned up to attend the first psychoanalytic conference in Vienna since the Holocaust. Fifty years later , the unnamed heroine of Miranda July’s new novel, “All Fours” — let’s call her Amanda Huggenkiss — can barely begin a cross-country road trip.

Huggenkiss — aah, never mind — the anonymous narrator is five years from 50 herself: a “semi-famous” artist with a desk that’s a little wobbly and a career to match. “I worked in so many mediums that I was able to debut many times,” she recounts. “I just kept emerging, like a bud opening over and over again.”

She’s married to a music producer, Harris, who divides people up not into hedgehogs and foxes but Drivers and Parkers. The former, like himself, are functional and content. The latter, like his wife, are bored by ordinary life but, craving applause, thrive in tight spots and emergencies.

One was the birth of their baby, Sam (a nonbinary “ theyby ”), after the kind of fetal-maternal hemorrhage that often results in stillbirth. Mrs. Harris is ecstatic about her child, now a second grader — taking weekly candlelit baths with them, she weeps with love — but she feels her parenting efforts, which include massaging kale for a five-part bento box lunch, go underrecognized or criticized. And her sex life, which is dependent on fantasy, a.k.a. “mind-rooted,” has suffered. Sometimes when she delays initiating, she can hear her body-rooted husband’s penis “whistling impatiently like a teakettle.”

After a whiskey company unexpectedly licenses one of her saucy sentences for $20,000, she decides to splurge for her birthday on a room at the Carlyle, the fancy-pants hotel on New York’s Upper East Side. But, starting from Los Angeles, she only makes it as far as a motel in the nearby suburb of Monrovia. And that’s when things get weird in that Miranda July way that some critics find the ne plus ultra of twee (Harris twee?) and I happen to enjoy very much, with a few caveats.

Angst about the change of life — what Jong would call “ Fear of Fifty ” — seems a family curse. At 55, the narrator’s paternal grandmother had fatally flung herself out the window, first considerately placing herself in a garbage bag; an Aunt Ruthie followed; and her own mother is cognitively impaired and hard of hearing (while her father perpetually occupies a “deathfield” of depression and panic). But she is most immediately concerned with losing her looks and libido: of falling off, what she sees on a graph of shifting hormones over a life span, the “estrogen cliff.”

She blows her windfall to redo Room 321 in lavish and idiosyncratic style, carpeted in New Zealand wool and scented with tonka beans, then begins a torrid and all-consuming romance with the decorator’s husband, a hip-hop hobbyist named Davey who works at Hertz and resembles Gilbert Blythe from the “Anne of Green Gables” series. (Blythe and a Grand Parterre Sarouk carpet are the kinds of allusions July drops for her cultivated audience without explanation.)

A few words about the sex in “All Fours,” which is titled for what the narrator’s best friend, a sculptor, calls “the most stable position. Like a table.” (Well, not a wobbly one.) It is gaspingly graphic, sometimes verging on gross (urine, tampons and a suspected polyp — “hopefully benign”— all come into play), and supplemented with masturbation galore. Compelled to read these definitely not twee-rated passages, I briefly considered filing a complaint with human resources. Then I remembered the protracted and messy sex scenes released with such fanfare into the culture by Philip Roth, Harold Brodkey, et al., and decided I was being discriminatory and prudish.

Jong popularized the idea of “zipless” intercourse (more snappily than that); July’s term is “bottomless.” Her perimenopausal protagonist’s desire is insatiable, unfathomable, roving across genders and generations: a kind of supernova of lust preceding what she anticipates will be the black hole of senescence.

Even more than this adulterous appetite, her casual ageism, in a milieu where preferred pronouns are sacred, can shock. “Nobody except the doctor knew — or could even conceive of — what was going on between her legs,” she thinks of a woman in her 70s glimpsed in the gynecologist’s office, imagining “gray labia, long and loose.” ( Paging Arnold Kegel !) And, buying a 1920s bedspread from a “free spirit” at an antique mall: “Sometimes my hatred of older women almost knocked me over, it came so abruptly.”

Hatred is fear-based, of course — and you come to understand that the main character’s real journey will not be on Route 66, but the path to self-acceptance. In order to ride shotgun comfortably, though, you have to accept her preoccupation with the reflection in the rearview mirror; her indifference to any current affairs but her own.

When this unnamed She spray-paints “CALL ME” on a chair for the now-estranged Davey, it’s like John Cusack’s boombox serenade in “Say Anything.” When she posts a wild dance on Instagram after firming her own body at the gym, frantically seeking his Like, it’s like the boombox turned up to arena volume.

Are the mental-health professionals back from Europe yet? One pops up late on Harris’s arm, as the marriage reconfigures, but otherwise they’re strangely absent from “All Fours,” whose woman on the verge of chronological maturity has the intense focus of an artist, sure — but also a yearning adolescent.

Andrea Arnold was last in Cannes with Cow in 2021, a documentary about a bovine’s pitiful existence on a farm from birth to death. Her new film, Bird , might switch animal classifications — and return her to narrative features about human beings — but there’s connective tissue between the two. Once more, Arnold is perfecting her meandering journey through marginalized existences.

Bug is bugged out, in a sense that might shock social services if ever they cared to visit the squat in which he is raising his dysfunctional family; but these are people too peripheral even for any governmental agency to bother with. Bug is getting married to Kayleigh (Frankie Box) and he is far too preoccupied trying to raise money for his upcoming nuptials — by finding the right kind of music to play to a hallucinogenic toad so it will produce slime he can sell — to pay much mind to his wayward daughter. (Hilariously, Keoghan dismisses the possibility that “Murder on the Dance Floor” passes for good music.)

Bird ( Franz Rogowski ) appears to Bailey in a flush of wind in the middle of a field of horses. “It’s beautiful,” he comments about the rising sun in the distance. “What?” replies Bailey brusquely. Beauty has no place here. But there is something about Bird, who prances in front of Bailey’s cellphone camera in a long skirt, and then starts surveying her tenement building perched on neighboring rooftops. He is kind to her; she has no experience of such a thing, so she barely recognizes it. But she can’t help but be drawn to him.

RELATED VIDEO

With Arnold working once more with Robbie Ryan, who shoots the film through vintage 16mm glass, the film’s burnt magic hour visuals paint even this dreary mess of council estates and shuttered waterside cafés in a kind of desperately optimistic glow. It is in Rogowski’s captivating performance as Bird, measured in beatific smiles and quirkiness, but also in occasional nods to a darker side that is ever primed to defend, that the film becomes a redemption tale. Through Bird, Bailey will find her place in a world determined to overlook her.

Keoghan, too, paints Bug as a flawed but ultimately loveable father figure. Bailey bristles at his hasty nuptials — we’re left to wonder how many times she’s heard the same from her dad — but though he neglects her and her brother, he is there for his kids when it counts. “I’d have been better off without ya,” he tells them, and he’s unquestionably right. “But I love youse two.”

Arnold knows just how to get under our skin. If we struggle to settle into all this misery to begin with, by the end we’re as invested as we could be. It was that way with Fish Tank and American Honey too; a jolt of culture shock that makes way for universal human truths. Here, more confident in her storytelling, she embellishes with fantastical elements we won’t spoil. Whether they’re really happening, or part of Bailey’s childlike desperation to believe in anything magical, the film doesn’t make clear. That’s for us to decide, but Arnold certainly wants us to know one thing by the end: Bailey will be OK.
