The folklore is further promoted as the lake completely freezes during the winters except for one spot, which is believed to be blessed. 

The lake is exotic also because the Chinese-Tibetan border is just a few kilometres from it. Tourists may also require Inner Line Permit, issued by local tour operators, to visit this region of North Sikkim as it is a sensitive zone.

Location: The lake is located at a distance of 190 km from Gangtok and at a distance of 5 km from Tibetan (Chinese) border.

Timings: Open 24 hours but you require an Inner Line Permit to visit the lake.

Situated at an altitude of 17,800 feet, it is considered as one the most sacred lakes by the Buddhists and Hindus alike. I recently book a trip in October with NatureWings after reading a lot of positive feedback especially their expertise in East Sikkim. Our plan was for 7N/8D covering North and East Sikkim. Through out my journey in North, every day i used to get calls from them inquiring about the travel comfort, stay etc. I was really surprised by that, but the joy did not last much once we started the East Sikkim trip. From handling of Permits,coordinating with driver, calling his friend to pass on all my details via whats app to get the permit on time was a real pain. This happened in-spite me providing all details on whats app and email at least 10 days prior to travel. On top of that when we reached Zuluk, the home stay guy said there was no communication given to them via phone or email about my stay. Luckily for us another family could not make it and we were allotted their room. Otherwise i would have to look for another place. Overall there were a bit of hick ups covering East as there was no coordinator like we had in South. For the price we are paying i would expect a much better service. We just returned from a West Sikkim Tour and the trip was a memorable one. It was our 4 Night 5 Days trip, covering Pelling in 2 Nights and Ravangla in 2 nights. In Pelling, we stayed in Crassula Ovata retreat in the Upper Pelling helipad area. The hotel is a new one with a mesmerizing view of Mount Kanchanjhungha from my bed. The location and ambiance of the hotel are too good, and we enjoyed every bit of the moments we stayed there. Honestly, we were in no mood to go out sightseeing as the hotel gives us the perfect ambiance of peacefulness and tranquillity. In Ravangla also, we got a beautiful hotel, Barfung Retreat. This beautiful resort with a good room and a breathtaking view of snow peaks from our room. In both the hotels, the food was also good, and our driver from Bagdogra to Bagdogra was helpful and jovial. We must thank NatureWings for offering us such a memorable trip and will go through them once again in the North East India tour.

We Traveled to Pelling, Ravangla and Kaluk during this year's puja vacation. Best place to have a great view of the peaks of the Kanchanjangha range of Himalayas. Just get up around 5:00 am in October and could see the golden snow-capped mountain peaks from the rising sun (because of fewer clouds, and the possibility of getting a clear view of snow-clad peaks). Peaceful Pelling is famous for its sightseeing points like Shingshore Bridge, Sky-Walk and Monastery. We stayed in Hotel Sikkim Aurora, close to the Helipad, and on the top of the town. Most of the rooms are mountain facing, can see the peaks from the bed as well as bathrooms. Just relax and enjoy the show. I strongly recommend a visit over this place for a couple of days (minimum). Overall the hotels, cars and foods arrangement made by NatureWings was satisfactory and within budget.

Gangtok North Sikkim Tour

Seated conveniently in the lap of Mother Nature, Sikkim is one of the scenic places to explore in North East-India. Gangtok is the destination where tour commences. Blessed with beautiful landscape, majestic monasteries, rich culture and warm-hearted people, the capital city of Sikkim caters to all kinds of travellers and their different interests. We shall aim to explore the suburb located Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and the Nathu Pass (if at all any spare time is left). Situated at an elevation of about 3753m, Tsomgo Lake is known for seasonal change in the colour of its water. For this reason, the local people consider the lake as sacred. Tsomgo is also to home several species of birds including Brahminy Ducks and wild animals like Red Panda.

The 6 hours drive through winding roads and scenic terrains will take us to Lachen, which is known for its unexploited beauty. At 2590m, Lachen is the starting point for some of the most interesting treks in North Sikkim and is the gateway to the alpine Guru Dongmar and Tso Lhamu lakes. Lachen was once served as the winter home of the shepherds who spent their summers on the alpine pastures bordering Tibet with their yaks. Lachen is now a popular base camp for trekking in North Sikkim. On our tour, we shall be witnessing the majestic Gurudongmar Lake, which is the highest lake in Sikkim and is situated at an altitude of 5181m. The crystal clear lake is surrounded by snow-clad mountains,fluttering Buddhist Prayers Flags and a temple in that adds more to the spiritual feel of the place. Gurudongmar remains frozen throughout the winter but in summers, visitors can enjoy looking at its sparkling water.

Lachung is a scenic mountain village that boasts of its lofty snow-capped mountain peaks, scenic waterfalls, sparkling brooks and apple and apricot orchards. There is also a handicraft centre at Lachung that offers a glimpse of skills of people of Sikkim. Our main place of visit would in Lachung would be the Yumthang Valley, which is a grazing pasture surrounded by the mountains. Yumthang is also known as Valley of Flowers is situated at an altitude of 3,564 metres. The valley is a home to the famed Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary that has over twenty-four species of the Rhododendron flowers. Adding to the beauty is a tributary of River Teesta that flows through the valley and the town of Lachung. Yumthang is an ideal place for spending a blissful time amidst nature, it also gives one the opportunity to reconnect with Mother Nature and see its bounty. We shall also visit the hot water spring that is believed to have medicinal properties. On our way back from Lachung, we shall stop by to watch the beauty of Bheema and Twin Waterfalls.

Excursion to Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

After breakfast in the morning, we will start an excursion to Tsomgo Lake (12,400 ft.) and Baba Mandir (13,200 ft.), which are about 55 km one way from Gangtok city. After exploring the lake and the temple, return back to your hotel in Gangtok for an overnight stay.

Gangtok – Lachen (118 Kms/6 hrs)

In the morning, we will drive to Lachen (9,400 ft, 118 km). On the way, we will visit Seven Sister Waterfalls. Later, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant on the way. Check in at the hotel in the late afternoon. Rest of the day is free to relax followed by an overnight stay at the hotel in Lachen.

Lachen – Gurudongmar Lake (40 kms each side) – Lachung (44 kms/2 hrs)

Today in the morning, we will drive towards Gurudongmar Lake (17,000ft). Only Indians are allowed to visit this lake.

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest situated lakes in North Sikkim. Note that the altitude here may cause breathing problem so be conscious.

After exploring the lake return back to the hotel and leave for Lachung. Enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel in Lachung.

Lachung – Yumthang Valley Excursion (21 kms each side) – Gangtok (118 kms/6 hrs)

After breakfast in the morning, we will proceed to Yumthang Valley which is also known as the Valley of Flowers (11800 Ft / 3598 Mts / 25 Kms / 1 ½ hours one way). Itinerary – north sikkim tour for 4 days, day 01: gangtok to lachen (120 kms./5 hrs./ alt.-  8,500 ft. ).

Welcome to  Yumthang Gurudongmar Tour. This is a 4 days North Sikkim tour. After breakfast start your journey from Gangtok to Lachen . On the way visit Singhik View point, Seven Sisters Water Falls, Naga Water Falls, Chungthang etc. Reach Lachen in the afternoon.

Day 02: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake (70km/ 3 hrs) . Lachen to Lachung  (50 km/ 2 hrs)

After breakfast proceed from Lachen for an excursion to Chopta Valley (14,600 ft.) &  Gurudongmar Lake  (17,800 ft.). Gurudongmar Lake offers magnificent view of Mount Siniolchu & Kanchandzonga. Back to hotel at Lachen for lunch. Transfer from Lachen to Lachung (Alt.8,600 ft.).

Note: Please take necessary medicines if you have any breathing problems.

Day 03 : Lachung to Yumthang Valley excursion (26 km./ Alt.- 11,800 ft.)

Full day excursion to Yumthang Valley.  The valley is covered with snow during January to March & with rhododendrons during April & May. En-route visit Sulphur Hot Spring having medicinal values. Lunch at hotel in Lachung. After free at leisure.

Day 04: Lachung to Gangtok (125 km./ 5 hrs)

After breakfast transfer from Lachung to Gangtok. This is your farewell day for  Yumthang Gurudongmar Tour.  En-route view magnificent views high rise mountains of North Sikkim & waterfalls. Drop at your respective hotel in Gangtok. Rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 01 : gangtok to lachung (124 km./ 5 hrs / alt-8600ft.).

Welcome to  Lachung Yumthang Tour.  In the morning drive to Lachung. Enroute you will visit Kabi Lungchok, Namok, Mangan, Singhik view point, Seven Sisters Water Falls, Naga Water Falls, Chungthang & numerous other water false & mountain streams.

Day 02 : Excursion to Yumthang (24 km./ Alt.- 11,800ft.)

Day 03: Lachung to Gangtok (5hrs)

Best time to visit north sikkim | weather | temperature.

You can plan your travel to North Sikkim at any time of the year except monsoon. Every season will offer you a different flavor. Weather in varies from sub-tropical in the south to tundra in the north. It mainly has five seasons.

Spring (March to April)

It is considered as the best season with moderate temperature. This is the time for rhododendrons, orchids & various flowers. Snow will also be visible during this period.

Summer (May to Jun)

As summer is not very hot in Sikkim. It draws the maximum no of tourist. Most of the regions of the state experience a temperature clime & it ranges from 18C (64F) to 25C (78F).

Monsoon (Jul to Mid Sep)

This is the time when the state gets maximum rainfall. Sikkim is an ideal place to enjoy Indian monsoon with lush green valleys, hills along with beautiful clouds & fog. But heavy rain increases the risk of landslide during monsoon.  We do not recommend to visit North Sikkim during monsoon.

Autumn (Mid Sep to Nov)

Just after monsoon this is probably the best time to travel with clear sky & moderate temperature.  It is also a good time for photography.

Winter (Dec to Feb)

These are the coolest months & some part of state receives a good volume of snowfall. One can have snow in North district & part of East district. Sikkim is a place with some of the highest snow capped peaks of the world. Though the route to Gurudongmar Lake or Yumthang Valley might be blocked blocked any time due to heavy snow fall.

How to Reach Sikkim 

The nearest airport is  Bagdogra airport  (IXB). There are road connections from Bagdogra Airport to various destinations in Darjeeling Sikkim & Dooars. Bagdogra directly connects Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bangaluru, Chennai, Paro & Bangkok. It has indirect connections with all major cities in India. Bagdogra plays an important role in planning your tour packages to Sikkim Darjeeling & Gnagtok.

Sikkim Airport:  Pakyong Airport (PUG) is the only airport in Sikkim. It is approx 30 km away from Gangtok. It connects Kolkata & Guwahati.

The nearest railway station is  New Jalpaiguri (NJP)  located near Siliguri. NJP connects with all major cities in India. Sikkim does not have any railway connectivity. NJP is the only option to access any destination in Darjeeling & Sikkim.

Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP is connected through national National Highway 10. North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) operates regular buses from Siliguri to various destinations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Lava etc. Sikkim national Transport (SNT) operates regular basses to places in Sikkim. There are no of private buses & cars available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus.

To Reach North Sikkim

To reach any destination on North Sikkim you need to stay at Gangtok. It can be assesses only by road from Gangtok with a Protected Area Permit (PAP) available in Gangtok.

Gangtok to Lachen – 110 km (6 hrs) Lachen to Thangu Valley – 35 km (2 hrs) Thangu Valley to Gurudongmar Lake – 32 km (2 hrs) Lachen to Lachung – 48 km (3 hrs) Lachung to Yumthang Valley – 26 km (1.30 hrs) Yumthang to Zero Point (Yumasamdong) – 25 km (1.30 hrs) Lachung to Katao – 27 km (2 hrs) Gangtok to Bagdogra – 130 km

North Sikkim Permit

All tourist need a Protected Area Permit to visit North Sikkim. You need to produce 2 copies passport size recent colour photographs & Photo ID proof (Passport/ Driving License/ Voter ID) for each travelling member. Minor may carry school/college ID along with photographs.

Foreigners can obtain permit by producing copy of Restricted Area Permit (RAP) & 2 copies of passport size photographs.

Note: Foreigners cannot go to Gurudongmar Lake, Zeropoing & Katao.

Places to visit in North Sikkim tour

At a height of 11,800 ft. the valley is about 140 kms away from Gangtok. It is one of the most beautiful places of Sikkim. The valley has Shingbha Rhododendron Sanstuary 24 verities of rhododendrons. Chungthang is situated on the confluence of Lachen and Lachung Chu, 95 kms from Gangtok, and it is the starting point of the river Tista. It emerged as a major sub divisional town of North District. The place has immense potential of biodiversity with a wide variety of orchids. Plants and wild life. Just 23kms and 29 kms away from Chungthang there another two important valleys Lachung and Lachen.

Gurudongmar Lake

It is an important tourist attraction in Sikkim located in North district. At an altitude of 17,800 ft (5,400 mtr) Gurudongmar is one of the highest mountain lakes in India as well as in the world.  The lake is created by snow melted water from the glaciers. Gurudongmar Lake is  175 km from Gangtok & 67 km away from Lachen. On the way you can also visit Thangu & Chopta Valley. Overall in India we find that and have opportunity to go on an 11-day tour of North East India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The tour package was well-organized and covered all the major destinations in the region, giving us a comprehensive overview of the culture, history, and natural beauty of this lesser-explored part of India. The tour started in Guwahati, the gateway to North East India, where we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. From there, we traveled to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, known as the 'Scotland of the East' for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. We visited the famous Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, and were mesmerized by its crystal clear water and surrounding hills. Next, we headed to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth, where we got to witness the spectacular Seven Sisters Waterfall and the living root bridges, a unique and fascinating man-made wonder. The tour also took us to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and we were amazed by its pristine surroundings and the warm hospitality of the locals. We then continued our journey to Kaziranga National Park, home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. We were lucky enough to spot these magnificent creatures during our safari in the park. The tour also included a visit to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, where we got to experience the unique Assamese culture and enjoy a traditional dance performance. The highlight of the tour was our visit to Tawang, located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. The monastery was a sight to behold, and we were fortunate to witness the daily rituals and prayers of the monks. The tour also took us to the picturesque Sela Pass, which offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. Throughout the tour, we were impressed by the beauty and diversity of North East India. The accommodations provided were comfortable and the food was delicious, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and shared interesting insights about the places we visited. Overall, I would highly recommend this 11-day tour package to anyone looking to explore the exotic North East region of India. It was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure, and I returned home with a deeper appreciation for this lesser-known part of our country.

Eine sehr gute organisierte Reise. Die Übergabe von Guide zu Guide und Fahrer und Fahrer funktionierte perfekt. Guides und Fahrer sind empfehlenswert. Die Hotels waren wie versprochen, einfache aber gute. Nur eines war dem Schlechtwetter nicht gewachsen und definitiv zu kalt. Für die Blooming Season im Yumthang waren wir um ca. drei Wochen zu früh. Es gab aber spannende Einblicke in Religion und Kultur. Ich würde die Reise wieder machen, nur ein wenig später.

Day 1- Bagdogra airport to Gangtok (125 Kms | 4 Hours)

The nearest airport to reach Sikkim is the famous Bagdogra airport connecting major Indian cities. And if you travel by train, New Jalpaiguri Junction should be your final destination. After landing, it takes about 4 hours to reach Gangtok from Bagdogra airport. Check-in to the hotel and the day is at leisure for you. Take a stroll in the famous M G Marg during your evening free time. This place is magical and has plenty of good restaurants and cafes!

Day 2- Discover Gangtok: Tsongmo Lake|Baba Mandir|Nathu La

• After having some hot tea and a hearty breakfast, start off your day by visiting the iconic Tsongmo Lake. This oval-shaped lake is located 40 kilometres away from Gangtok city, at an elevation of about 3,780 metres above sea level. On top of the breathtaking views and scenery, it is famous for housing the Brahminy Ducks and many other migratory birds.
• Next, set off to visit the shrine of the famous Baba Harbhajan Singh, a war hero. This is popularly known as the Baba Mandir . You can spend quality 2 hours here and the visiting hours are from 8 am to 2.30 pm.
• After spending some hours here, grab yourself a quick lunch in the nearby restaurants. One must definitely try the traditional dishes of Thukpa, Momos, Shah-Phaley, Wonton, Thenthuk, and Gyathuk that are easily available in many restaurants.
• Post lunch, you can drive until the Nathu La pass and explore its beauty. *Important* Nathula is open for Indian nationals on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; 5 days a week.

Day 3- Adventurous ride to Lachen (118 Kilometres | 6 hours)

• Lachen is a village surrounded by snow-capped peaks and beautiful alpine meadows located at an elevation of 9500 feet. Although the distance is 118 kilometres, it easily takes around 6-7 hours of an adventurous bumpy ride. With a population of about 1000 people, Lachen has its unique form of local self-governance called the “Dzumsa”.
• Visiting the Singhik viewpoint, Naga falls on your way to Lachen is a must-to-do thing in your North Sikkim tour itinerary.
• By the time you reach this offbeat village, it is almost evening and you can self explore its small city centre and nearby places. For adventure seekers, you can trek to its nearby valleys and hills.
• Bird watching in the evening is another thing you can try out and spot some rare wildlife species.

Day 4- Get stumped by Gurudongmar Lake (40 km)|Lachung (44 kilometres)

Our eight day Sikkim tour was going great, but it had to be called off on the sixth day due to the news of corona virus pandemic. The team handled the travel restrictions professionally. The main attractions in Sikkim are MG Marg, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, Kaala Pathar, Namchi Char Dham, Buddha Park in Ravangla, and many monasteries.

Q. How far is North Sikkim from Gangtok ?

There are two major tourist attractions in North Sikkim, namely Lachung and Lachen which are located at a distance of 120 km from Gangtok and it takes around 5-6 hours to reach these places from Gangtok as the roads are narrow.

Q. Is Nathula Pass open on all days ?

No, Nathula Pass remains closed on Mondays and Tuesdays of every week for all tourists.

Q. Do Indian Nationals require permit to visit Sikkim ?

No, Indian Nationals do not require a permit to visit Sikkim. However, there are certain places (like Tsomgo Lake, Baba MAndir, Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley) for which all Indian tourists have to obtain an Inner Line Permit which is arranged by the local tour operator.

Q. What is the best time to visit Sikkim ?

Sikkim is all-year round destination, except the rainy months of July and August. However, to get a clear view of the mountain range and snow, October to March is the best time to come. And in case you want a witness snowfall, then January to March are the best months. If you want to beat the heat, then most of the tourists visit in the months between April to June.

Q. How far is Sikkim airport located from Gangtok ?

Pakyong Airport is the newest airport of Sikkim (around 30 km from Gangtok). However, there is very less flight connectivity at the moment and moreover the flights do get cancelled on a regular basis. Hence, it is recommended to book your flights to Bagdogra Airport (around 5 hours drive from Gangtok) which is well connected with all the major cities of India.

Q. How to reach Sikkim ?

Sikkim is well connected by all modes of transport (air, rail, and road). The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport (30 km from Gangtok) and Bagdogra Airport (120 km from Gangtok). The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (120 km from Gangtok)

Yes, there is snowfall in the high altitude regions of Sikkim including Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Baba Mandir, Gurudongmar Lake, and Yumthang Valley. It snows usually between the months of December end to March.

Although Sikkim now has its own small airport, the best way to reach is via the Bagdogra International Airport. The connectivity is better and major cities are connected via this airport. If you wish to travel by railways, the New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri is the best way to reach Sikkim.

Sikkim Entry Protocol

To promote tourism in Sikkim, constraints on the entry of tourists in the restricted areas have been considerably relaxed; however visitors should follow the underlying necessary guidelines to have a hassle-free experience while visiting this picturesque state of India. Indian Nationals intending to visit Sikkim do not require any special permit while visiting some of the unrestricted areas like Gangtok, Yuksom, Rumtek, Pemayangtse, Phodong etc, but visiting certain areas of North Sikkim like Yumthang Valley, Chungthang, Lachung, Yumesamdong, Lachen, Thangu, Chopta and Gurudongmar Lake, it is mandatory even for Indian nationals also to obtain a permit.

Foreign Nationals intending to visit Sikkim can obtain a permit for an initial period of 15 days which is extendable up to 30 days. The permits can be arranged very easily at several places such as Siliguri, Darjeeling, Rongpo and Malli. These permits can also be obtained from Indian Embassy at different places. Foreign tourists have to travel in groups of two or more to visit restricted and protected areas of Sikkim like Yumthang Valley, as they are not allowed to club and go with Indian tourists.

There are however further restrictions on visiting several places deeper inside Sikkim. Both domestic and foreign visitors require special permits to visit Tsongo and Nathula area which is a day tour from Gangtok. Foreigners can only visit Tsongo and not Nathula.

Restricted Area Permit and Protected Area Permit Regime

Sikkim has certain entry restrictions and is under a restricted area regime due to its proximity with neighbouring countries like China. This State is divided into 3 areas based on travel restrictions. Some parts require Protected Area Permit (PAP) while some require Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Therefore all foreign nationals require Restricted Area Permit to visit any part of Sikkim. Earlier this permit was known as Inner Line Permit (ILP). Indians however do not require this but there are other restrictions for all including Indians for few specific places in Sikkim. There are certain areas like Tsomgo Lake, Dzongri etc which are defined as Protected Areas and have special army deployment. Both foreigners and Indians require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit such places. But few protected border areas like Nathulla are not accessible to foreigners at all, while Indians can still visit with the Protected Area Permit.

Restricted Area Permits (RAP) This permit is mandatory only for foreigners who wish to enter Sikkim. It is free of cost. All that is required is a valid Passport along with an Indian visa. With proper documentation, it takes less than 30 minutes to get the permit. Protected Area Permits (PAP) This permit is applicable for both foreigners and Indians intending to visit protected areas. Solo foreigners are not permitted in such areas. Additionally foreign tourists wanting to go trekking in the interiors of Sikkim should apply for the PAP through tour operators who are registered with Sikkim Tourism Department and the trekking programme should be arranged by them. Photo ID proof like passport, voter's ID card or a driving license would be the required documentation.
