An official rumor?

Shot in the Dark - Corona, CA band Shot In The Dark became the first band officially announced for next year's tour when Lyman announced on his Twitter feed that they'd been signed. A band formed just this year at the West Coast Rock School of Corona, California, the band is fronted by 11-year-old Jacob Chabot, with Jarod DeShong (12) on drums, Austin Schmidt (16) on lead guitar, Taylor Martino (14) on rhythm guitar, and Spike Snyder (15) on bass guitar. Lyman also tweeted that "11 year old Jacob is a bad ass," and I'm inclined to agree. While Shot In The Dark has yet to record or release anything, their YouTube channel has a collection of live clips exhibiting some serious rock from these pint-sized rockers.

Here are the bands we've heard rumored for the tour so far.

According to a few message boards online , Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman posted some rumors regarding the band's appearance next year. Depending on the source, Lyman either said something to the effect of "look for NOFX next year," or that they "may play next year." A scour of his twitter feed reveals no such posts, so it may have been deleted. The one thing that's known for certain is that NOFX has been announced to be headlining the Rebellion Fest in Blackpool, England in the summer of 2014, so if they are going to be making an appearance at Warped, it won't be for the entire run.

He's the hardest partier in rock and roll, a self-professed brony, and known for bringing energetic sets to the Vans Warped Tour, so it would be no surprise if Andrew WK showed up on the 20th anniversary tour. Another rumor (this one verifiable) has arisen from Kevin Lyman's twitter, based on an exchange between Lyman and Andrew WK back in April.

Andrew WK posted:

@KevinLyman Just thinking about you and all the amazing times, and wanted to say THANK YOU and PARTY HARD, Kevin!

To which Lyman replied:

@AndrewWK save aug 9 and 10th 2014 for the 20th anniversary decades show have to have you on the show, to party hard with all the bands

Who knows if the exchange carries any weight, or if it was just a bit of rock and roll pillow talk? We'll see if it transforms into actual dates.

Bring Me The Horizon

Pupfresh.com has posted that British metalcore band Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oliver Sykes announced at the West Palm Beach date of the Warped Tour that they would be back on the tour in 2014. Again, while it would be no surprise if these Warped Tour veterans made the trek in 2014, I am leery of giving too much weight to these sort of statements, possibly made while under the influence of the adoration of the fans. Back in 1999, Ice T announced at the end of an incredible set in Detroit that his hardcore band Body Count had been signed to play in 2000, something that never transpired. That being said, a reunited Body Count is playing at the 2013 Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, so perhaps Kevin should get on the phone and get them to deliver on that promise that Ice T made over a decade ago...

This is one that sits firmly in the realm of rumor and speculation, In October, Kevin Lyman posted this on his Twitter feed:

do any of you guys remember @oreskaband think we should try to get them back on warped

Without the inclusion of punctuation, it's tough to tell if he's asking his followers if he should try to get the all-girl Japanese ska group back, or if he's saying he thinks he should try to get them back. What's known for sure is that they were on the tour in 2008 , and Lyman was a big fan. I caught their set at his insistence, and whole-heartedly agree. They played fast tight ska punk that hammered it's way through the barriers set up by the band's limited English. OreSkaBand released Hot Number in February of this year, and if they return to Warped, there's a good chance they'll be one of the hottest numbers on this year's tour.

Who will not be playing the 2014 Vans Warped Tour?

Touché amoré.

Although it's too soon the fully explore the lineup of the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, it's definite that one band will not be on the tour, and that's Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band Touché Amoré. When asked by OC Weekly if the band would ever play Warped Tour frontman Jeremy Bolm said:

No way, not at all. Nothing against our friends who have done it. Last year, Title Fight; this year, Defeater is doing it, which is fine. I appreciate that there are honest bands that are on it. There are kids who have no idea about this world, who if they see a band like Title Fight or a band like Defeater that maybe it will open their eyes a little bit to our world as opposed to a world with misogyny and ignorance and nothing to offer any-body which is what 95 percent of what Warped Tour is. (The interview is here.)

It's a bit of a convoluted statement that's heavily laden with PC buzzwords and no concrete example, but while I'm not sure what it is about 95 percent of Warped Tour that makes it filled with "misogyny and ignorance", it's certain that Bolm is not in love with the tour. We'll be keeping track of more rumors regarding the 2014 Vans Warped Tour as they arise, and we also want to hear from you: who are you hoping will turn out in order to help Lyman and the Warped Tour celebrate the beginning of their second decade?

R.I.P. Warped Tour. At Least We Still Have Vans.

The skater company says goodbye to the music festival that made it cool.

warped tour 2014 san diego

By Medea Giordano

The Vans Warped Tour — the music festival that has crossed the country each year since 1995, and is frequently called a “punk rock summer camp” — is on its last run.

For 24 years, the Warped Tour created spaces for metal, punk and ska fans to meet their idols and mosh together under the hot sun: Each summer, about 70 bands and artists would play in some 40 locations, welcoming hundreds of thousands of tattooed concertgoers clad in band tees and Vans checkered slip-ons. Many musical acts that helped define the late 1990s and early 2000s graced Warped Tour’s stages, including Blink-182, Reel Big Fish and Eminem .

But recently, the show’s popularity has declined, among both bands and attendees. Some music festivals are bigger than ever — Coachella drew more than 200,000 people to the California desert for two days in April — but the Warped Tour doesn’t have the same cultural cache it once had.

“The die-hard Warped fan was still coming, but the ones for the future seemed to drop off,” said the festival’s founder and longtime producer Kevin Lyman in an email.

He said there is the possibility for other Warped Tour events down the line — including for the 25th anniversary next summer — but 2018 will be the final cross-country blowout. “I’ve done everything I can in this format,” he said. “I’m just tired. It’s time for someone else to continue or start something new.”

The final tour not only marks the end of an era in music, but of a particularly intimate brand collaboration. Vans has sponsored the Warped Tour since its second year and credits the festival with burnishing its countercultural image.

“Until we got involved with the Warped Tour, we didn’t have a national footprint to talk about who we are,” said Doug Palladini, the skate apparel company’s global brand president. “Vans is a brand that really embraces individuality, and Warped Tour is very much the same.”

Vans representatives said that the Warped Tour — which the company has a 75 percent stake in — isn’t ending because of a decline in ticket sales, and that its retirement shouldn’t be seen as divestment in music or skater culture. House of Vans, an indoor skate park and music venue with locations in Brooklyn, Chicago and London, and pop-ups around the world, will continue to host famous musicians and local, unsigned performers, and admission is free.

But the collaboration between Vans and the Warped Tour has run its course.

“We’re going to make this a part of Vans history and always hold it up as a really, really important part of who we are,” Mr. Palladini said. “It’s just the right time to put a bow on it and say thank you to all the bands and all the fans that made Warped Tour was it is.”

“One Big Family”

Vans was already synonymous with southern California skateboard culture in the 1990s when the Warped Tour started, thanks to the sneakers’ sticky soles. (They have good grip.) But the tour’s national popularity helped establish Vans as a punk brand, and that image has made the company incredibly appealing, especially to shoppers ages 16 to 34 .

In 2004, when Vans was acquired by VF Corporation — which owns JanSport, Timberland and the North Face — it was making about $325 million in sales a year. This year, Mr. Palladini said, Vans is on track to surpass $3 billion.

The first Vans store, which was known at the time as the Van Doren Rubber Company and opened its doors in Anaheim, Calif., in March 1966, was a much humbler affair. It was founded by Paul and Jim Van Doren, brothers who would take custom orders and manufacture shoes on site. Eventually the shoes’ waffle soles attracted skateboarders, and in 1976, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta — pro-skaters who were immortalized by Victor Rasuk and John Robinson in the 2005 film “Lords of Dogtown” — designed the Era , a low-top sneaker that became a Vans classic.

There were other moments in which Vans shoes were in the countercultural spotlight, including a 1982 cameo courtesy of Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli character in the movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High .” But the company’s punk identity wasn’t forged until Mr. Lyman met Steve Van Doren.

A former Lollapalooza stage manager, Mr. Lyman had put together the first Warped Tour in 1995, with bands like Sublime and No Doubt on the original lineup. But he needed financial support to keep it going and was seeking sponsorship.

Steve Van Doren, the son of the Vans co-founder Paul Van Doren, was on a different mission. Separately, he was searching for someone to help him plan an amateur skate contest that would tour across the U.S. and the world. He met with Mr. Lyman, who said Vans would draw more people to skate events if live music were on the lineup.

In “Vans: Off the Wall,” a book about the company, Mr. Van Doren said that a deal was forged between the two men within 15 minutes of their meeting. Thus, the Vans Warped Tour was born.

“ Steve Van Doren. He always got it and was the driving force early in this relationship,” Mr. Lyman said. “After our first year with Vans, Airwalk approached me and offered a bunch of money to leave and go with them. I said hell no, and it was all because of Steve. Steve Van Doren continues to be the soul of Vans in my mind.”

“The Vans Warped Tour is one big family,” Mr. Van Doren said in an interview. He recalled his first summer, in which he drove from stop to stop on the tour in a van with his daughter. Though he opted to take the relatively cushy bus after that, he said he went to every Warped Tour show for 15 years.

The People’s Music Festival

Today’s popular music festivals often charge a steep price for big-name performers. A three-day general admission pass to Coachella, for example, can run $500, or close to $1,000 for a V.I.P. ticket. The Warped Tour, by comparison, costs about $45, and there is no hierarchy to the ticketing system. Even the bigger bands are never given special treatment, Mr. Van Doren said. The whole point is accessibility: There are no extra fees to meet artists, and fans can visit bands at their tents or run into them in the crowd during another performance.

“When you monetize a handshake, it changes the whole relationship,” Mr. Lyman said.

The Warped founder guessed that, of all the tour’s performers, Andrew W.K. probably spent the most time with fans. He would “sign for six hours and then go outside and sign some more. I would have to ask him to move since we needed to load the trucks to get to the next city,” Mr. Lyman said.

“Warped is a festival for the music and for the organizations that travel with it,” said Victoria Hudgins, a 23-year-old Warped Tour fan who has attended twice before. “I feel as though the younger crowd these days are more interested in putting their picture from Coachella on Instagram than they are actually going to and enjoying the festival itself. You don’t go to Warped for an Instagram picture, you go to Warped to be a part of something so big and so crazy.”

Ms. Hudgins had planned to buy tickets for two stops on the Warped Tour this summer — one in her home state of Michigan and the tour’s final show in Florida — before she got the opportunity to work on the tour full-time. (She is working for Support Tattoos and Piercings at Work, which sets up a tent at each city the tour visits, after volunteering for the organization last year.)

“To me this is going to be a summer where I feel like I’m going to fit in everywhere I am,” she said. “This is going to be a summer meeting an entire country of people. I can be a part of something so much bigger than just myself.”

Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty

While the Warped Tour has declined in popularity, Vans has become a global phenomenon. Between 2010 and 2014, it saw double-digit growth every year, and in 2017, the company surpassed the North Face as the VF Corporation’s top-selling brand. The shoes are just as visible in high fashion as they are in the skate park, and they have gotten musical shout-outs from young artists like Travis Mills and Ty Dolla $ign . (In 2011, the actress Kristen Stewart literally cemented the shoes into pop culture history when she wore a pair to her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony .)

“All of a sudden, everywhere I looked, it was Vans,” said Samantha Brown , a stylist and video director who has worked with Nylon magazine, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta. “They kind of make everything look cooler.”

But just as the Warped Tour kept its ticket prices down out of loyalty to its fan base — and even let parents in for free — Vans has no plans to charge more for their increasingly popular apparel. (Shoes run from about $60 to $100.) The company’s prevailing wisdom, Mr. Palladini said, is around inclusivity. “And a part of inclusivity is accessible price points.”

For Steve Van Doren, who is now the vice president of events and promotions, it’s important that the company not forget its roots. “Skaters in the mid ’70s adopted us, and I thank them still four decades later because they gave us meaning,” he said. “They gave us purpose.”

Photos from Warped Tour 2014

  • On  Jul 28, 2014

I have done Warped Tour so many times. Well, a lot of times to me. I am going to go count the dates. About 136 days in total. What the hell is wrong with me? No, but really – I love Warped Tour. I can’t do the whole thing anymore because it just doesn’t make sense, and I really don’t enjoy doing the same thing every day for a whole summer. But, it did enable my career so I will never be mad at it.

Warped Tour 2014 All Access Pass

Usually, Warped Tour starts about 3 hours from where I live, so I never have to worry about getting out the on the tour itself.  I just hop on a train and TADA. Not this year. First stop: Houston, Texas. This meant I had to fly from San Diego to Dallas to Houston. So I did just that.  I was running on empty that morning because the night before I had just taken a train down from LA after finishing up VidCon. Not a lot of energy left in me. So when I arrived in Dallas, of course, they told me my flight to Houston was delayed until very late that night.

I was determined. I said fuck that, went and rented a car, and drove my ass to Houston. I mean, it was only about 5 hours. However, I am not sure at which point in my life 5 hours became an “only” amount of time. That is a long fucking time! It’s like, two LOTR movies. But I did it. And I got Taco Bell in the middle and filmed a vlog while I was driving, and took a nap in a parking lot because I was so tired.

I wasn’t in a very good mood all the way up to getting to Warped Tour, but once I got there it was great. So many friends, so many people I hadn’t seen in a while.  I just walked around saying hi to everyone and got situated on the bus I was riding on. Then I got out my copter, Carl, and started flying it around cause I had to get my daily fix.

DCIM110GOPRO

Seriously, Carl is my friend-maker. Everyone wants to be your friend when you can fly a craft around. So I did that. Here is a picture of all the tour buses I snapped. I spent Warped Tour 2014 differently this year. I had to change it up, otherwise, I would have been bored. I mostly focused on my Onstage Portrait series . I had a lot of fun with it and that is why there are not many live photos in this blog; because when I shot live, I mostly shot for that series. So my photos this year are a lot more of people just hanging out. I hope you enjoy.

I rode with The Maine on our off day. They wanted to do a photoshoot and I was game. I haven’t worked with them in almost 7 years, and it was nice to see where they were at in their lives. A pleasure to shoot as well!

Mike Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada

I did a photoshoot with ONE OK ROCK. I had a friend working with them and he introduced me to them. It was so different because they didn’t speak any English. I have never really done a shoot with someone who doesn’t speak English. Maybe they were so fucked up that they couldn’t speak English, but not really because it wasn’t a language they knew. That being said they were very nice, and I did two more shoots with them before the tour was over.

ONE OK ROCK

I found This Wild Life backstage. I was happy they let me photograph them. Was so pretty out.

6/18/2014 – Mesa, AZ – Vans Warped Tour 2014 – Quail Run Park

ONE OK ROCK

That night I flew out to go work for A Day To Remember for a few days. No more Warped! I went again when it stopped by my hometown on June 25th.

6/25/2014 – San Diego, CA – Vans Warped Tour 2014 – Sleep Train Amphitheatre

I met Miranda on tour in Mexico. She was up shooting videos for Vans Mexico. I really didn’t have much work to do that day, other than a shoot with Neck Deep, so we hung out and ate food and it was nice.

Miranda + Portabello burger = :)

Jake is a solo acoustic act that I had never heard of before Warped. I love him, and his music rules.

7/11/2014 – Camden, NJ – Warped Tour 2014 with Of Mice & Men – Susquehanna Bank Center

I flew out to Warped in Camden from my tour with Lindsey Stirling. This time I would be riding with Of Mice & Men. It was good to be back out!

We had a day off in the woods with Kevin Lyman (Founder of Warped Tour), The Story So Far, Four Year Strong, Less Than Jake, Saves The Day and some of the production. It was so much fun! We cooked out, hung out, went cliff jumping, got caught in the rain and made s’ mores.

Nate is from Anberlin. He makes delicious coffee every morning. I wish I could still drink as much coffee as I used to. Every morning I would go buy $1 worth of iced coffee from Nate, which ended up being like one inch of coffee. It was perfect.

I left Warped for two days and then met back up with it and A Day To Remember. They were to play a surprise set at the Chicago date. The day before they had rehearsals.

2018 Vans Warped Tour

11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. SDCCU Stadium parking lot, 9449 Friars Road, Mission Valley. $40 (plus service charges). (800) 745-3000. ticketmaster.com

No Doubt, Paramore and the San Diego-bred bands blink-182, Rocket From the Crypt and Pierce the Veil are just some of the acts who received a pivotal early-career boost when they performed on the Vans Warped Tour. For several generations of young punk, ska and alternative-rock fans and performers, Warped has been a rite of passage each summer since 1995. That rite, sadly, is ending after this year’s edition of the cross-country tour — the victim of changing musical tastes, a glut of competing festivals, and a growing preference for social media over real-life experiences. The final Warped Tour opens today in Pomona. Then comes a Friday stop at the sprawling SDCCU Stadium (formerly Qualcomm Stadium) parking lot in Mission Valley, where 55 acts — including the San Diego trio Lighterburns — will perform on five stages. GEORGE VARGA

OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-off Festival

10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. 4800 to 5000 block of Newport Avenue and surrounding streets. Free admission; small fee for chili tastings. (619) 224-4906. oceanbeachsandiego.com

Ocean Beach will celebrate its 39th street fest and chili cook-off, which more than 70,000 visitors attend every year. Visitors will find five stages of music, a beachside beer garden, a lively artist’s alley, a community mural and a fun zone. Put your taste buds to the test and cast a vote along with the judges for the best chili from the more than two dozen original recipes. Entrants compete for the titles of Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award and People’s Choice Award. CAROLINA GUSMAN

Festival of Yoga

8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego. Free. festivalofyogasandiego.org

Breathe, bend and stretch in celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Yoga celebration at Waterfront Park. Join community yoga classes, take in the live music, and visit vendors, food trucks and breakout sessions designed to guide anyone interested in or already practicing yoga at any level or age. Bring friends and family and spend the day in the park practicing downward dog and back bends, see a fashion show, or simply meditate in the sun. LISA DEADERICK

Fairy Festival 2018

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. San Diego Botanic Garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas. $8-$14 (free for garden members and children 2 and under). Parking is $2. (760) 436-3036. sdbgarden.org

Join other young fairies in costume (or not) as the San Diego Botanic Garden fills with mythical little sprites flitting through the Eucalyptus Grove. Take pictures with the fairy princess, leave a wish at the wishing bush, build a fairy house, decorate a magic mushroom or fairy cradle for a fairy baby, paint and fill a treasure chest or a unicorn ornament, fill a fairy dust necklace, visit the fairy land market, or check out many other magical activities during this celebration of summer. (Adults are asked not to wear costumes, and some of the activities charge a fee.) LISA DEADERICK

San Diego International Fringe Festival 2018

Through July 1. Multiple performances run daily; check website for schedule. At 17 venues around San Diego and in Tijuana. Admission for most single shows is $10. (Some events are free.) Multiple-show passes are $27-$72. In addition, one-time purchase of $7 Fringe Tag is required for most festival access. sdfringe.org

As it gets set to launch its sixth edition, San Diego’s sprawling celebration of unorthodox performance might be in danger of an identity crisis. After all, what happens when a fringe festival is no longer on the fringes? What started in 2013 as a group of local arts enthusiasts taking a flier on an ambitious idea is turning into something of a cultural institution, as the San Diego International Fringe Festival once again descends on downtown and other parts of the region (including Tijuana) for 11 days of offbeat creativity. The Fallbrook Art Association experienced firsthand the sweet smell of success this year when the San Diego County Fair’s fine arts exhibition gave its members 16 awards. An additional 17 entries were accepted in the juried exhibition. The winners included Karen Langer Baker (first place, “Homage to Degas’ Bather”), Rosemarie Meis (first place, “Rose Duet,”), Dawn Harrison (second place, “Good Morning Sunshine”), Jack Ragland (second place, “Barcarolle”), Gitta Pfahl (third place, “Early Summer”) and Carol Zaleski (third place, “Sipping in Porto”). Through July 1. New Village Arts Theatre, 2787 State St., Carlsbad. $43-$46 (discounts available). (760) 433-3245. newvillagearts.org

It’s been nearly 15 years since an upstart musical comedy that combined some cute puppets with some very adult themes raided Broadway, taking home three Tony Awards, including best musical. Now, New Village Arts Theatre demonstrates that “Avenue Q” still has street cred; the Carlsbad company is staging a sharp revival of the show that brought us such songs as “It Sucks to Be Me,” “What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?” and “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist.” Along with a capable cast and savvy direction by A.J. Knox, the production also benefits from the puppet-coaching prowess of Lynne Jennings, head of the San Diego Guild of Puppetry, who helped the actors keep those sometimes gleefully profane fuzzy creations in line. Magic 92.5 Summer Jam

Featuring Bell Biv DeVoe, Tony! Toni! Toné!, SWV, Warren G, Coolio, Tag Team, Lighter Shade of Brown, 69 Boyz and Robin S. 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Valley View Casino Center, 3500 Sports Arena Blvd., Midway District. $35.50-$79.50, plus service charges. (888) 929-7849. axs.com

The musical style known as New Jack Swing was a dominant force in R&B in the late 1980s and early 1990s. So was Bell Biv DeVoe, which featured three former members of New Edition and rivaled Keith Sweat, Tony! Toni! Toné! and fellow New Edition veteran Bobby Brown as one of New Jack’s top acts. “Poison,” the 1990 debut album by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe, sold 4 million copies. Now, well into middle age, the trio headlines Saturday’s Magic 92.5 Summer Jam at Valley View Casino Center. Their set is likely to feature such past hits as “She’s Dope” and “When Will I See You Smile Again?” But will it also include 1993’s “Hootie Mack” and last year’s “Hot Damn”? We’ll see. GEORGE VARGA

“The Tempest”

Opens Saturday. 8 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays, plus July 2 and 16; no performances July 4 or 15. Old Globe’s Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, Balboa Park. $30 and up. (619) 234-5623. theoldglobe.org

In a lifetime spent onstage and on-screen, Kate Burton has done 14 Broadway shows, dozens of movies and TV series and, somewhere in there, plenty of Shakespeare as well. But until now, she hadn’t gone toe to toe with “The Tempest.” Now, Kate Burton not only is taking on “The Tempest,” but she is stepping into the role her father would have played — that of the nobleman and sorcerer Prospero. In director Joe Dowling’s production — the opener for the Globe’s summer Shakespeare Festival — the character is named Prospera, and her relationship with the teenage Miranda is thus transformed into a mother-daughter saga. Vans Warped Tour: A Journey Through Music, Unity, and Rebellion

Posted by Jason McMahon | Feb 14, 2024 | Culture , Featured | 0 |

Vans Warped Tour: A Journey Through Music, Unity, and Rebellion

In the annals of music history, there exists a phenomenon that transcended mere festivals; it became a cultural movement, a rite of passage, and a symbol of rebellion and unity. This phenomenon is none other than the Vans Warped Tour . For over two decades, the tour crisscrossed the continent, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of countless fans and musicians alike. It was more than just a showcase of punk, rock, and alternative music—it was a community, a platform for expression, and a celebration of youth culture.

The festival was crucial for the launch of many musical acts as well as independently owned brands such as Substream Magazine . I recall doing a cover shoot with Hey Monday who was a headliner for the festival in 2010. Kevin had offered up his back yard and pool for the afternoon! He offered up his home, pool and grilling skills to the entire crew. That’s the kind of guy he was.

warped tour 2014 san diego

The roots of the Vans Warped Tour can be traced back to the early 1990s, a time when alternative music was surging in popularity. It was during this era that Kevin Lyman, a seasoned music industry veteran, conceived the idea of a traveling festival that would cater to the burgeoning punk and skateboarding communities. Drawing inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk rock and the raw energy of skate culture, Lyman set out to create an event unlike anything the music world had seen before.

“We wanted to bring together the worlds of music and skateboarding in a way that hadn’t been done before,” recalls Lyman. “We wanted to create a space where young people could come together, express themselves, and celebrate their passions.”

And so, in the summer of 1995, the inaugural Vans Warped Tour kicked off in a handful of cities across the United States. Featuring a lineup of up-and-coming punk and ska bands, as well as a makeshift skate ramp, the tour immediately struck a chord with audiences hungry for something new and exciting.

“It was like nothing we’d ever experienced before,” says Tim Armstrong, frontman of the influential punk band Rancid, who performed on the first Warped Tour. “There was this sense of freedom and camaraderie that you just couldn’t find anywhere else. It felt like we were part of something special.”

warped tour 2014 san diego

As the tour progressed and evolved, the Vans Warped Tour grew in size and scope, attracting bigger crowds and more diverse lineups. Bands like NOFX, Bad Religion, and Pennywise became synonymous with the tour, while newcomers such as Blink-182, Green Day, and My Chemical Romance found a platform to showcase their talents to a wider audience.

“It was a crazy time,” reflects Mark Hoppus of Blink-182. “We were just a bunch of kids from San Diego with big dreams, and suddenly we were playing in front of thousands of people every day. It was surreal.”

But beyond the music, the Vans Warped Tour was also known for its sense of community and inclusivity. From its early days, the tour embraced diversity and welcomed fans of all backgrounds, genders, and identities.

“It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from,” says Hayley Williams of Paramore. “At Warped Tour, we were all part of the same family. It was a place where you could be yourself without fear of judgment.”

For many bands, the Vans Warped Tour was not just a chance to perform, but also an opportunity to connect with fans on a personal level.

“It was like summer camp for punk rockers,” says Travis Barker of Blink-182. “We’d spend all day hanging out with fans, signing autographs, and just soaking in the energy of the crowd. It was pure magic.”

Over the years, the Vans Warped Tour continued to evolve, adapting to changing musical trends and cultural shifts. While punk and ska remained at the heart of the tour, organizers also began to incorporate elements of emo, hardcore, metal, and hip-hop into the lineup, reflecting the diverse tastes of its audience.

“We always tried to stay ahead of the curve,” says Lyman. “We wanted Warped Tour to be a reflection of the ever-changing landscape of alternative music. We never wanted to get stuck in one particular genre.”

warped tour 2014 san diego

Despite its success, the Vans Warped Tour faced its fair share of challenges over the years. From financial struggles to logistical headaches, organizing a cross-country tour of this magnitude was no easy feat.

“It was a constant balancing act,” admits Lyman. “There were times when we didn’t know if we’d be able to keep the tour going. But we always found a way to make it work because we believed in what we were doing.” I’ll never forget the afternoon in Cincinnati, OH when sitting with Kevin backstage when he looked at me in all honesty and said, “I’m not sure how much longer I can do this.”

In 2018, after 24 years and over 1,000 shows, Kevin Lyman made the difficult decision to bring the Vans Warped Tour to an end. Citing declining ticket sales and the changing dynamics of the music industry, Lyman felt that it was time to close this chapter of his life.

“It was bittersweet,” says Lyman. “On one hand, I was proud of everything we’d accomplished over the years. But on the other hand, it was hard to say goodbye to something that had been such a big part of my life for so long.”

As news of the tour’s demise spread, fans and musicians alike took to social media to share their memories and express their gratitude for the impact that the Vans Warped Tour had had on their lives.

“It’s the end of an era,” tweeted Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. “Warped Tour was more than just a music festival—it was a movement. Thank you, Kevin Lyman, for everything.”

In the years since its final curtain call, the legacy of the Vans Warped Tour lives on in the hearts and minds of those who experienced it firsthand. From the countless bands who got their start on its stages to the millions of fans who found solace and inspiration within its walls, the tour will forever hold a special place in the annals of music history.

“As sad as I am to see it go, I’m grateful for the memories,” says Lyman. “Warped Tour was more than just a job—it was a labor of love. And I wouldn’t trade those years for anything in the world.”

Although the sun has set on the legacy of the Vans Warped Tour, one thing remains abundantly clear: its impact has been felt and will be felt for generations to come. For those who were lucky enough to experience it, the tour will forever serve as a reminder of the power of music to unite, inspire, and ignite the flames of rebellion.

“The spirit of Warped Tour will never die,” says Tim McIlrath of Rise Against. “As long as there are kids out there with guitars and something to say, the legacy of Warped Tour will live on.”

Kevin, if your reading this, let’s bring back Warped Tour!

The Vans Warped Tour 2011

Vans Warped Tour Teggart Main Stage

This year, we had the chance to catch up with the Vans Warped Tour in Pomona, Mountain View, and San Diego, California.

The Vans Warped Tour is known for showcasing legendary and up and coming bands of all genres. This year was no exception and Mesa artists were in full force at the ‘punk rock summer camp’. Mesa is proud to been a part of  Warped Tour over the past 17 years, all thanks to the bands, crew, and of course, Warped Tour founder, Kevin Lyman!

There were so many bands to see this year that we split up and caught shows first in Pomona and Mountain View, and met up with the tour again as it wrapped up in San Diego.

Set Your Goals (Audelio Flores) on Vans Warped Tour 2011

Some highlights on the Teggart Main Stage this year were A Day to Remember, The Devil Wears Prada, August Burns Red, Pepper, Against Me!, Less Than Jake, and 3Oh!3. Other Mesa bands played the Advent, Nintendo 3DS, Tilly’s, and AP Stages throughout the day.

A Day to Remember Neil Westfall on Vans Warped Tour 2011

The bands used a wide variety of Mesa guitar and bass amps and cabs to achieve their tones. Dual and Triple Rectifiers were in full force this year, as well as Electra Dynes, Stilettos, Mark IVs and Vs, paired with Rectifier and Stiletto 4x12 and 2x12 cabs. There were also M9 Carbines, Big?Block 750s, Bass 400+s played with a range of Mesa PowerHouse cabs.

The Vans Warped tour never fails to deliver extreme heat, huge crowds, and cutting edge music. We had a great time this year and are eagerly anticipating next years line up.
