Spawning [ ]

The wandering trader appears randomly in the Overworld with 2 leashed trader llamas . They typically spawn within a 48-block radius of a player . In Bedrock Edition , they also try to spawn by a claimed bell in a village .

When the world is created (or updated from an older version), a counter is initialized to 24000 ticks (20 real-life minutes, or 1 Minecraft day). Each minute (1200 ticks), if / gamerule doTraderSpawning is set to true ,‌ [ Java Edition only ] the counter is decreased by 1200. When the counter reaches 0 it is reset to 24000 and, if / gamerule doMobSpawning is set to true , an attempt may be made to spawn a wandering trader. The first time there is a 25% chance of making the attempt, which increases to 50% the second time and is 75% thereafter until a trader is spawned or no player is found for the attempt.

When attempting a spawn, a random player is selected. If no player is found, no trader is spawned but the chance for future attempts is reset to 25%. If a player is found, then 90% of the time the spawn attempt immediately fails.

It should be noted, if there is a bell within 48 blocks of the player then the nearest such bell is used as the target location.

After either of the above conditions are met: ten attempts are made to find a valid mob spawning location on the uppermost block of a random X/Z position within -48/+47 of the target location on each axis. If spawning the trader succeeds, an additional ten attempts are made for each of two trader llamas to find a position within -4/+3 of the trader. [ verify ] Wandering traders can still spawn if the passive mob cap is full.

In Bedrock Edition , when using spawn eggs or the / summon command to spawn a wandering trader, llamas always spawn with it. Wandering traders never spawn if / mobevent minecraft:wandering_trader_event is set to false .

Despawning [ ]

A wandering trader despawns after being loaded for 48000 ticks (40 minutes, or 2 full Minecraft days), although ticks spent with the trading UI open are not counted. [ verify ] Naming the wandering trader with a name tag or placing the wandering trader in a boat / minecart does not prevent it from despawning. [1] This also includes wandering traders as passengers of other mobs in Java Edition , where the wandering trader still despawns if summoned on top of another mob.

When a wandering trader is unloaded, either by moving into unloaded chunks or entering another dimension , its despawn timer freezes.

Wandering traders despawn sooner if all the trades are locked.‌ [ Bedrock Edition only ] [ verify ]

Behavior [ ]

The wandering trader has 6 random trades . New trades are not unlocked after trading with it.

After spawning, the wandering trader prefers to wander within 16 blocks of the initial spawning target location, even if that player leaves or the bell is removed, if not otherwise reacting to nearby players or mobs. [ verify ]

The wandering trader can sometimes form a caravan, due to wild llamas that follow the leashed trader llama(s).

Wandering traders drink a potion of invisibility during dusk and as needed to renew the effect during the night. They also drink milk if invisible during the day to remove the invisibility effect.

Wandering traders avoid zombies and their variants, all illager variants, and vexes , staying at least 8 blocks away. Unlike other villagers , a wandering trader killed by zombies does not become a zombie villager . [2]

Wandering traders drink potions of invisibility if hurt by magic attacks or projectiles from hostile mobs (but not players), or when avoiding illagers, vexes, and zombies.‌ [ BE only ]

When attacked by a player , a wandering trader flees from the player as a villager would do. The llamas , however, attack the player by spitting if their master gets hit, except in Peaceful . The llamas stop attacking if the player is killed and respawns, if the llamas are leashed after the wandering trader is killed, or if the player gets far enough away from them for a short period of time.

Despite their similarities to villagers, attacking or killing wandering traders does not anger iron golems . [3]

Unlike most other villager-like mobs, wandering traders do not visually sit down when riding objects such as boats and minecarts . [4]

Trading [ ]

Wandering Trader GUI

The trading UI of a wandering trader in Java Edition .

The trading system is a gameplay mechanic that allows players to buy items with emeralds , but from a wandering trader this time.

A player can click on the wandering trader to view the items offered for sale, similar to a villager. Different offers are visible in a list, and clicking on one of the offers moves the corresponding items to the slots above the player's inventory . All offers involve emeralds as a currency.

Wandering traders typically sell items generated in the world or otherwise related to nature, such as plants , dyes , and buckets of fish . They can also trade less common items, such as coral blocks , blue ice , or nautilus shells . Overall, trades offered by wandering traders offer a way to obtain biome-specific materials, without having to travel to the specific biomes.

After the player purchases the same item several times, the wandering trader locks the trade, but unlike villagers, never unlocks the trade. The wandering trader can appear again around the player with new trades after a while.

Wandering traders do not have the novice-master trading system like villagers. Instead, the player can buy anything from the wandering trader without the need of unlocking the previous trades.

Wandering traders do not increase or decrease the prices of its items being sold if attacked by the player, or if the player has the Hero of the Village effect.

Unlike villagers , wandering traders only sell items , they do not buy items. Wandering traders do not have an experience bar and do not modify their offers or prices based on changing demand. This (the trade items or prices) can be changed by the player by editing the corresponding NBT data flag through the use of the / data ‌ [ JE only ] command.

Wandering traders are the only renewable source of sand , red sand , coral blocks , and small dripleaves .

The wandering trader cannot work at a job site block and restock, even summoned with a villager profession or other villager data.

  • A milk bucket (8.5% chance, increased 1% per level of Looting ) if killed while holding or before finishing drinking.
  • A potion of invisibility (8.5% chance, increased 1% per level of Looting ) if killed while holding or before finishing drinking.

A wandering trader is also a source of leads , as it typically spawns with two leashed trader llamas . These leads break and drop (at the location of the llama) if either trader or llama dies or if they are separated.

Wandering traders do not drop any loot when they despawn.

Wandering traders do not reward any experience when killed or when the player successfully trades with the wandering trader.

Minecraft: Everything You Need To Know About The Wandering Trader

What good can the Wandering Trader do for you in your Minecraft run? Here's everything you need to know in order to find out.

The 1.14 update was all about changing the way villagers and villages work in Minecraft . It also introduced a lot of changes to trading, and to this end introduced a brand new passive mob known as the Wandering Trader. In addition to his blue garb, he can be recognized by his two signature llamas and unique appearance compared to regular villagers .

RELATED: Minecraft: 10 Tips To Succeed In Combat And Archery

The Wandering Trader allows players to trade for some rarer items, plants, and dyes regardless of their location. While his prices are very different from the rather expensive prices of regular villagers, his inventory is also much smaller and he can't be leveled up, nor can his trades be rerolled and manipulated. Here's what to know if you plan on trading with him.

Updated on July 14, 2021 by Anastasia Maillot: Following the first half of the Caves and Cliffs update, or the 1.17 version of Minecraft, the Wandering Trader hasn't changed that drastically. That being said, he does receive a few new trades that allow you to get your hands on some of the unique decorative items of the new update.

On top of that, the Wandering Trader's bucket of tropical fish trade is actually more important and valuable now that it's been confirmed to be the primary source of food for axolotls. If you're looking to breed this brand-new mob and can't catch fish, the Wandering Trader is a good option.

Who Is The Wandering Trader?

The Wandering Trader can be recognized by his blue outfit and two special llamas that typically accompany him. He also makes a unique villager-like sound effect, which makes him much easier to distinguish or find.

During the nighttime, the Wandering Trader will actually stay close to the player and drink an invisibility potion to hide from mobs. When morning comes, he drinks a bucket of milk to reappear once more. If he's ever attacked, his llamas will protect him by spitting on the enemy, whether it's the player or a hostile mob.

Killing the Wandering Trader is an option, though it's generally much more beneficial to simply trade with him. However, if you do slay him while he's consuming milk or his potion of invisibility , he has a slight chance of dropping either. He drops no experience points.

RELATED: Minecraft: Every Way To Get Wool And All The Dyes You Can Make (And How To Make Them)

Occasionally, the Wandering Trader will accidentally unleash his llamas, which allows the player to collect free leads from the ground. When he despawns, he also won't take his unleashed llamas with him, which basically means free llamas for the player. So keep an eye on his leads, as without slime it's an item that's fairly difficult to craft.

How To Find A Wandering Trader

Unlike normal villagers who stick to their villages for the entirety of their lives, the Wandering Trader cannot be returned to over and over again whenever the player so desires. First of all, only one trader can spawn at a time, and this can start happening as early as 20 minutes of real-time, which is roughly one day within the game itself.

RELATED: Minecraft: How To Find Every Ore Easily

Wandering Traders are not limited by the environment when it comes to spawning. They can spawn in even the most remote locations, including underground if the player happens to be mining inside a cave. They can also spawn in bodies of water, so even if you live on a small island, you'll still get a chance of trading with him.

After the 20-minute mark, the chance of him spawning increases. Typically, it takes about three and a half hours for a Wandering Trader to spawn, but he can also take longer or arrive earlier. Once he has arrived, he will despawn again after 40 minutes or more. This can't be prevented in any way, not even by trapping or naming him.

All Of The Wandering Trader's Trades

The real reason why the Wandering Trader is important is due to his trades. Many of them might seem extremely random, but they can be surprisingly useful for players who need a rare resource only found in biomes far away from them . As such, the Wandering Trader is useful for rare saplings, flowers, or even blue ice and podzol.

RELATED: Minecraft: All Overworld Dungeons, Ranked

His best trade is most definitely his Nautilus Shell trade for 5 emeralds, which can make building a Conduit with a Heart of the Sea much easier. Since Nautilus Shells are so rare to find while fishing or when fighting Drowned mobs, a Wandering Trader with this trade is extremely useful.

The primary trade options consist of five trades, randomly picked from the following options:

RELATED: Minecraft: 10 Best Adventure Maps On The Marketplace

The secondary trade option, which is typically found at the bottom of the list and is considered the most valuable, is picked randomly from the following options. The more expensive the trade, the less the Wandering Trader will have in stock.

Meet the Wandering Trader

Let us sell you on this Village and Pillage villager!

Imagine you’re out strolling in the Overworld. The sun is shining, the cows are mooing, and the zombies are growling beneath the ground. It’s a beautiful day and everything is as it should be! Then, all of a sudden, you hear a strangely familiar sound - Hrmm!

A mysterious blue-clad villager has appeared out of nowhere! You gasp and drop your controller. You fall to your knees. Your mind explodes with questions: “How did it get here?”, “Why is it trying to trade with me?” and “Minecraft villagers outside of villages? What blasphemy is this?!”

Calm down, friend! Everything is fine! You’ve just encountered Minecraft’s latest and most experienced salesman – the Wandering Trader !

wandering trader song

Covered in blue robes and accompanied by two llamas, the mysterious Wandering Trader is just what its name suggests – a travelling salesman, journeying the Overworld in search of customers willing to exchange their shiny emeralds for rare and exotic items.

Steve Enos is a game designer for Minecraft, and one of several developers that have been involved in the Trader’s design. “The idea for the Wandering Trader came from RPG’s,” he explains. “When the heroes are travelling through an incredibly dangerous place, they usually come across some sort of merchant. It’s obvious that the merchant is there so you can get stocked up on potions or healing items before you fight a boss or something.

“But we started to think about the merchant's story. Why was it there? Where is it going? We thought it would be neat if the Wandering Trader could travel from village to village, sometimes encountering the player in the wilderness.”

While trading isn’t exactly a new mechanic in Minecraft, the trader’s mobile behaviour certainly is. They can appear when you least expect it – either out in the overworld or occasionally in villages, appearing at the local gather site. The trader can offer a wide variety of goods, from dyes and flowers to coral blocks or even nautilus shells. Also, since they like to travel, the Wandering Trader has its own way of dealing with hostile mobs.

wandering trader song

Don't try to outrun a pillager. Drink a Potion of Invisibility instead!

“My favorite part is how it drinks a Potion of Invisibility when in danger. It’s funny how you can still see it holding the two llamas by the leads!” says Steve.

Designing a villager with such a profound love for moving between villages proved to be a technical challenge for the development team. Initially, they tried to make the Trader just pop into the player’s village. “The solution was to spawn the same particles the Endermen use when they teleport, as if to explain how the trader got from place to place safely,” Steve explains. “Later we decided that we didn’t want the Trader to be so supernatural and we were ok with it just popping in whenever it appeared.”

Another big challenge was the work on the Wandering Trader’s visual design, which Lead Pixel Artist Jasper Boestra designed together with fellow artist and pinball enthusiast Chris Nordgren from the Minecraft: Dungeons team.

wandering trader song

An early concept design for the mysterious merchant. Why trade emeralds when you can wear them on your forehead?

wandering trader song

"Hrm, hrrrm hrm?" is villager-speak for "Hey, who stole my hoodie?"

wandering trader song

"No hats!" said art director Johan Aronson. The rest is history.

“We wanted to make it look mysterious and exotic, so the first iterations were a bit overboard,” Jasper remembers. “I let Chris have a shot at it and we liked the new design more. It looked a little too much like a pirate and not a merchant, so I tried to add a hat to it afterwards. However, our art director, Johan Aronson, wanted us to try giving it a hood instead, to make them more mysterious and hide their villager-ness a bit.“

A hood? I love hoods! Giving the Wandering Trader a hood was likely the best idea since sliced bread (or my idea to store sliced bread in my hood!) The hood isn't the only aspect that makes the Wandering Trader stand out from the rest of the villagers – they also have their own unique voice, which further raises the question of who they really are.

“They had to be designed as a mysterious trader from far away lands, nothing like the villagers you see in the villages around you,” Jasper explains. “With the hood, you might even question if they're actually villagers.”

Ahhh, that’s a good point. I'm not that mysterious, but can I still wear my hood, though?

“Er, sure Per,” says Jasper. Hooray!

wandering trader song

Desperate to seek out this Wandering Trader yourself? They’ll be in the upcoming Village & Pillage update! But if you can’t wait for that, you can try the latest Minecraft Java snapshot or the Minecraft beta . Don’t forget to bring emeralds!

Wandering Trader in Minecraft

This Minecraft tutorial explains all about wandering traders with screenshots and step-by-step instructions. A wandering trader is a new type of mob in Minecraft that is a lot like a villager , with a few differences in their behavior and where they spawn. Let's learn about wandering traders in Minecraft.

Supported Platforms

Wandering traders are available in the following versions of Minecraft:

* The version that it was added or removed, if applicable. NOTE: Pocket Edition (PE), Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows 10 Edition are now called Bedrock Edition. We will continue to show them individually for version history.

A wandering trader is not the same as a villager in Minecraft, though they have some similarities. Wandering traders are found wandering the game with leashed trader llamas ( there are always one or two trader llamas attached by leads to a wandering trader ). The following is a picture of what a wandering trader looks like in the game:

wandering trader

Hostility Level (Passive)

A wandering trader is a passive mob. The term mob is short for mobile and is used to refer to all living, moving creatures in the game such as chickens, creepers, and wandering traders. Because a wandering trader is a passive mob, it will never attack you in the game (Creative or Survival mode).

Where to Find Wandering Traders

In Minecraft, wandering traders will naturally spawn in the game on land in most Overworld biomes. The wandering trader always spawns with one of two trader llamas leashed to the wandering trader. As you play the game, the wandering trader and its trader llamas will come and find you. You can trade with the wandering trader.

Also, if you break the lead between the wandering trader and the trader llama, you can tame and ride the trader llama, just like you can with a regular llama . Because there are a number of ways to unleash a trader llama, you don't need to kill the wandering trader to unleash its trader llamas.

If you are having trouble finding a wandering trader, you can summon a wandering trader using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg .

A wandering trader does not carry a weapon.

Attack Method

You are safe to walk near a wandering trader and it will not attack or cause you any damage. And if you attack a wandering trader, it will just try to walk away. It will not attack you back.

When you kill a wandering trader in Minecraft, any leads attached to the trader llamas will break and you can get the lead as a drop.

lead

If the trader llama was holding a milk bucket or a Potion of Invisibility , these items would also have been dropped when the wandering trader was killed.

milk

Make sure you pick up any dropped items before they disappear. They are useful and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Experience Points

As you play the game, you will gain experience. The most common way to gain experience is by killing mobs. When a mob is killed you will see tiny green and yellow balls appear and move towards you.

experience points

These orbs represent experience points. Unfortunately, when you kill a wandering trader, you will not gain any experience points.

Similar to a villager, a wandering trader can also trade with a player. Each wandering trader has a set of trades available. This is what a set of trades might look like:

Pressing use on an adult villager with a profession, or on a wandering trader, opens a menu, allowing a player to trade with the villager or wandering trader. This action pauses any pathfinding the entity was doing. If the entity takes damage while trading, the trading menu closes. The same thing happens if they walk or are transported far enough away.

The wandering trader kinda sucks. [Mobs] It's a common meme to see people complain about the Wandering Trader only being useful for two leads. Many ways. On our realm we start by breeding hundreds of villagers 2 chunks away from the intended location of trading hall. Then we train handfuls at a time to a midpoint 1 chunk away from the trading hall where theyre assigned their jobs, locked in their trades, and zombified/cured one to five times to get discounts.
