visit kent island md

Kent Island is in the Chesapeake Bay at the eastern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and is quickly becoming a popular tourist destination in Maryland . Kent Island is a great place to sample authentic Maryland seafood, take a historic stroll, or enjoy a trip out on the Chesapeake.

Understand [ edit ]

Kent Island has a rich history dating back to 1631, when William Claiborne of Jamestown first set up a trading post on the island. It is said that Claiborne liked being on Kent Island so much that he decided to make it his permanent home, and he started what would become the oldest English settlement in Maryland. Ever since then Kent Island has thrived as the crossroads of the Chesapeake. Several people, from founding fathers en route between Annapolis and Philadelphia, to vacationers on their way to Ocean City, have visited the island. Many of them, like Claiborne, have even liked Kent Island so much that they decided to move there.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

From Washington, take U.S. 50 east towards Annapolis, or if you're coming from the Baltimore area, take I-97 south to U.S. 50 east. Then, from Annapolis, follow U.S. 50 east towards the Bay Bridge [dead link] (toll for the bridge is $4 eastbound only, as of July 2019). After crossing the bridge, you're there! Exits 37 and 41 provide access to the island's major tourist attractions.

By plane [ edit ]

  • Bay Bridge Airport [dead link] (FAA:w29) is a small, regional airport with no scheduled commercial flights. Private planes park within walking distance of Hemmingway's restaurant and Kent Island Depot (a deli). Taxis, rental cars, aircraft rental, flight training, and aircraft maintenance are available
  • Kentmorr Airpark (FAA:3W3) is a small grass airstrip with no scheduled commercial flights. Private planes park within walking distance of the Kentmorr Restaurant & Crabhouse and the Kentmorr Marina. Cab transportation to town is also available.

Get around [ edit ]

The main way to get around Kent Island is by car, at least for now. Routes 8, 18, and 50 are the main roads to take from place to place, but if you want to go on foot or on bike, you can use the hiker-biker trails. The Cross Island Trail, as its name implies, goes across the island from Terrapin Park to Kent Narrows, and the Kent Island South Trail goes from Matapeake Park to Romancoke Pier. The trails unfortunately do not connect with each other, but there are plans to fix that in the future along with another trail south of Route 50, connecting Kent Narrows with Chester. With the new trails, future trips to Kent Island may involve getting around by bike instead of by car, just be ready for the workout; Kent Island already has over 12 miles of trail!

See [ edit ]

  • Historic Stevensville , along the southern part of Love Point Road and East Main Street in Stevensville. Kent Island's historic downtown area has restored historic buildings, preserving its 19th-century small-town feel. The area also offers shopping and dining. To get there, take Exit 37 to Route 8 north, then follow the signs to Stevensville and Historic Stevensville.
  • Terrapin Park , off Skipjack Parkway in Stevensville. A nature park that offers beautiful views of nature, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Bay Bridge. To get there, take Exit 37 to Route 8 north, turn left onto Skipjack Parkway, then turn left onto Bateau Drive.

Do [ edit ]

  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk . Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge Walk offers a unique opportunity to take a 4.3-mile walk across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the longest bridge in Maryland. The walk is usually held the first Sunday of May, but it's not held every year, so check in advance.

Connect [ edit ]

When on Kent Island, Verizon and Sprint/Nextel get the best service (Telus/Bell for Canadians, they work just as well), AT&T/T-Mobile (Rogers/Fido) get poor to no service, especially on the southern end. Check with your wireless carrier (or your roaming partner if you are travelling) for any changes. You can expect better over all service from any carrier the closer you are to Annapolis (especially AT&T).

Go next [ edit ]

Annapolis and Cape St. Claire are on the other side of the Bay Bridge, and Grasonville , Centreville , and Wye Mills are on the other side of the Kent Narrows Bridge. Grasonville is immediately past the bridge and beyond it lies Queenstown , the location of the Queenstown Prime Outlets which offer designer outlet shopping. Beyond Queenstown you have a choice of going north along Route 301 to Centreville and the upper counties, and southeast along Route 50 to Wye Mills and the lower shore. You can also go to Baltimore or Washington, D.C. , home to historical places, national monuments, museums, aquariums, and the U.S. Capitol Building and the White House.

historic kent island

A home worth saving.

Rising out of the Chesapeake Bay waters is one of America’s oldest and least recognized English settlements, Maryland’s Kent Island. Settled in 1631, only 24 years after America’s first permanent English settlement, Jamestown, Kent Island holds as much historical weight as its brethren. So why is Kent Island not recognized and respected equally? Why are the histories of Jamestown, Plymouth, and the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke taught in school, but no one mentions Kent Island? The Isle of Kent is steeped in historical conflict, bloodshed, struggle, and survival. Yet it currently faces another major problem. Its land and historical sites are being overrun by irresponsible development, destroying the very thing that makes it so special. We’re here to change that...

Memoirs of kent island, more coming soon, the terrapin saga: balancing business and nature, the terrapin saga: defying development, saving the stevensville station, walking the kent island railroad, dark hollows reanimated, dark hollows haunted trail.

The idea of Historic Kent Island began in 2020 when our founder, J. Coursey Willis, produced a video series called “My Morning Walk.” He traveled the island talking about the hidden history of his hometown. The history segments became more popular and one day, over a glass of wine with co-founder Jennifer Barrick, the seed was planted to save Kent Island. Our organization was established in 2021 with a mission to discover, restore, investigate, and preserve the historic and cultural heritage of Kent Island, Maryland. We affectionally call this system DRIP and apply it to everything we do. The island is in the crosshairs of irresponsible development, so foremost, we must spread awareness of its significance as one of America’s earliest and previously most disregarded English settlements. This is our foundation, and from there, we build. The sky is the limit, and we have big dreams, so we hope you’re ready. Help us end the madness and make a change.

support the cause

All great movements start with a few supporters; without support, any venture will fail. Therefore, we need your help. Your donation allows us to do more and focus on Kent Island’s greatest issues. We are constantly working on new programs as our budget expands, but currently concentrating on Memoirs of KI, Seven Secret Sites, Save the Graves, and Trails of Tales. But those things cost money… lots of money. Did you know one piece of signage costs roughly $2,500? This doesn’t even include the labor of research and writing! So please donate what you can to save where we live. Every dollar helps.

Your guide to the chesapeake bay, kent island area attractions, things to see and do in the kent narrows area.

Bay Bridge from Kent Island

The island features an abundance of marinas and restaurants that attract visitors from nearby Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington DC.  Separated from the mainland by Kent Narrows, Kent Island once served as a trading post for the first permanent English settlement in Maryland.  The island later developed into a major seafood packing and processing area.

Stevensville is the largest town on Kent Island and is home to several historic structures, including the restored Stevensville Train Depot and Christ Church, home to Maryland’s oldest congregation which was founded in 1631.  Visitor information is available from the county visitor’s center at 117 East Main Street.

The area has lots of seafood restaurants and marinas.  It also has lots of outlet stores , with the Queenstown Premium Outlets nearby.  The Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center is located on the Kent Narrows waterfront.  The Exploration Center houses the Queen Anne’s County Office of Tourism and features interpretive displays about the Chesapeake Bay.  It’s also a good place to pick up pamphlets and brochures for area attractions.

Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach  is located on Kent Island’s western shore.  This small park offers nice views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, a public swimming beach, an outdoor amphitheater, woodland trail, picnic area, and a dog beach.

The Matapeake Pier and Boat Ramp and the Romancoke Pier and Kayak Ramp provide access for boating, paddling, and fishing. Matapeake has a 650′ long lighted pier that’s open 24 hours a day. The surrounding three-acre park has restrooms and a picnic area with grills.  There’s also a 25′ wide boat ramp at Matapeake. The Romancoke Pier has a kayak launching facility.

For those who enjoy lighthouses, the Bloody Point Bar Lighthouse can be seen from the southern point of Kent Island.

Terrapin Beach Nature Park is located just north of the Bay Bridge on Kent Island.  The park includes a one mile nature trail, pond, two observation blinds, and a boardwalk to the Chesapeake Bay. The park is located off MD 18, inside the Chesapeake Bay Business Park.

kent-narrows-bridge

The Wildfowl Trust of North America operates the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (formerly known at the Horsehead Wetlands Center) just east of Kent Island. The 500 acre sanctuary features paths around six waterfowl ponds and through different types of  wetland habitats. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available.

The Cross Island Trail spans Kent Island from Terrapin Nature Park to Kent Narrows. The trail is about six miles long. There are several places along the way where you can park and enter the trail including Terrapin Nature Park, Old Love Point Park, Castle Marina Road, Kent Narrows Boat Launching Ramp, and the Chesapeake Bay Exploration Center.

Kent Island Day 2024 Cancelled!

Kent Island Day Cancelled

Forecasted rain washes out 2024 Kent Island Day

We’ve had to make that tough call for Kent Island Day. Based on the terrible weather forecast for Saturday, we’ve made an executive decision to cancel KI Day to give our vendors and participants time to react. We are an outdoor event – totally dependent on the weather. Given the current weather patterns, there is little likelihood that the weather prediction will change.

“Unfortunately, it is with deep regret that the decision to cancel this Saturday's event has been made. As there is no rain date scheduled due to a number of factors, not the least of which is the weekend ramp closures on Kent Island starting on May 19th, a decision of this magnitude is not taken lightly, especially considering the amount of work that has taken place behind-the-scenes over the last few months in preparation for Kent Island Day. However, the forecast on multiple apps and models shows Saturday as being highly unfavorable for an outdoor event of this nature. Because several of our vendors require advance notice with regards to product ordering and preparation, and many of our yearly participants, particularly of the heritage and cultural nature, are unable to participate at all when it rains, we are making this announcement now with the weather information that we currently have available to us.”

We hope you will plan to visit Kent Island Day in 2025 when we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Kent Island Heritage Society!

Kent County Cuisine—as Fresh as It Gets

The benefits of eating locally sourced food are well lauded, from increased flavor and freshness to reduced waste, transit pollution and fuel consumption. Islanders naturally realize these advantages as their geographical limitations demand resourcefulness of everything the environment offers.

While Kent County, Maryland , isn’t technically an island, it is nearly surrounded by water. Native tribes and early settlers thrived on its bounties from the sea and its fruitful soil. Fortunately, their traditions of self-reliance continue to prosper with residents today.

A Bird’s-Eye View of Kent County, Maryland

A patchwork of green, yellow and brown covers a landscape surrounded by large swaths of silvery-blue glinting like a mirror for the sun; ribbons of jade and teal weave through clusters of lush green groves; and quaint towns where life is easy and offer fountains and flower gardens by which to rest.  This is Kent County, Maryland , from a bird’s-eye view. A College Town Where History, Humanities and the Arts Are for Everyone

Chestertown , located in Kent County, Maryland , thrives with historical significance, lively festivals, a vibrant art and cultural scene, eclectic shops, charming inns and diverse restaurants. It’s also home to Washington College, the 10th oldest liberal arts college in the country—which is named after former President George Washington.  Since its founding in 1782, the college’s influences have continued to flow through Chestertown like the waterways that surround it.

Chasing the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab

Grab those wooden mallets because it’s time to chase down the delicate, sweet seafood flavor of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, and in Kent County, Maryland, the supply is plentiful and the tradition of celebrating the season is lively.

Callinectes sapidus or “beautiful, savory swimmers” have shades of blue mainly on their legs and claws, and some specimens, though rare, are entirely blue. No matter the amount of blue, these crabs harvested from the Chesapeake Bay promise sweet, delicate meat.

It’s a Dog’s Life in Kent County, Maryland
