Report: Driver ‘distracted or inattentive’ moments before driving into path of Kenworth hauling massive load, resulting in deadly collision

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - The driver of a Ford F-150, identified in a TxDOT Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report as James Tyler Jones, was “either distracted or inattentive” when he drove past escort vehicles and into the path of a tractor trailer hauling a massive oversized load, resulting in a wreck that killed his two passengers, the report states.

The deadly collision happened at about 11:20 a.m. April 27, 2024, on Highway 36 near Highway 317 in Temple, Texas.

The Temple Police Department and the TxDOT crash report identified 22-year-old Abigail Boatwright and 17-year-old Evan Boatwright, both of Gatesville, Texas, as the F-150 passengers killed in the wreck.

According to the TxDOT report, the driver of the Ford F-150 was traveling east on Highway 36 “at an undetermined speed” approaching the rear of several vehicles that were stopped to facilitate a convoy hauling a massive load.

The Kenworth was carrying a distillation column, which is used in the refinery process of oil and gas, according to Temple Fire and Rescue. It’s believed to have come from the Houston-area and was headed somewhere west.

The massive load was 16-feet wide and weighed 343,000 pounds. It was being hauled using five separate, but connected, flatbed trailers with a total of 240 tires on 120 axles that also included a Peterbilt vehicle acting as the “pulling power unit and connected pusher unit.”

The driver of a GMC Sierra pickup was also traveling east on Highway 36 and had already been directed to pull over to the right shoulder by a Houston police motorcycle escort. Dashcam footage from the Kenworth shows the Kenworth was traveling west on Highway 36 at 43 miles per hour, the report states.

The Kenworth, according to the report, “was wider that the allowable lane width and had to straddle both the east and westbound lanes.”

The Houston police motorcycle escort was riding ahead of the convoy and directing traffic traveling eastbound to pull to the right and stop for the approaching load.

Ahead of the motorcycle unit was a high pole wide load escort vehicle displaying yellow flashing lights, a utility truck, and another escort vehicle.

The report claims the driver of the F-150 was “either distracted or inattentive” when he “failed to see the escort vehicles warning him of the approaching wide load as they passed his location.”

The driver of the F-150 “continued to disregard the warning from the Houston police motorcycle unit with its red and blue lights flashing as he approached the line of stopped vehicles ahead of him,” the report states.

“(Jones) allegedly failed to stop Unit 1 (Ford F-150) behind the other vehicles and swerved to the left at the last moment, crossing over the solid yellow line for eastbound traffic, pulling into the westbound lane directly into the path of Unit 2 (Kenworth).”

The driver of the Kenworth, the report states, observed the F-150 veer into his lane and took evasive action to avoid a collision by applying the brakes.

Jones then pulled onto the right shoulder for westbound traffic and stopped, “partially blocking the westbound lane and forcing the (driver of the Kenworth) to veer left,” the report states.

The driver of the Kenworth was unable to move the tractor trailer to the left “due to insufficient clearance” between the Kenworth and the vehicles that had pulled over to the shoulder, forcing the driver to “maneuver” between the Ford F-150 and the GMC Sierra while braking.

“This braking action by (the driver of the Kenworth) caused the (massive oversized load) it was hauling to shift forward,” the report states.

“The momentum of the load continued forward as the truck and trailers slowed to a stop,” the report further states, “As (the Kenworth) came to an abrupt stop, the rear chains holding the load onto the trailer snapped and the load rotated to the right.”

The load fell off the trailer and its support, then landed on top of the Ford F-150, the report states. Jones was trapped inside the F-150 and his two passengers suffered fatal injuries, the report states.

It took crews more than four hours to safely remove Jones from the F-150, Temple Fire and Rescue said. He was then flown to an emergency room with life threatening injuries. An update on his condition has not been provided.

In the wake of the accident, Highway 36 was closed for several days as crews worked to remove the wreckage and the massive load.
