No experience, no problem: writing your travel manager resume

You're quite set on the travel manager role of your dreams and think your application may add further value to your potential employers. Yet, you have no work experience . Here's how you can curate your resume to substitute your lack of experience:

  • Don't list every single role you've had so far, but focus on ones that would align with the job you're applying for
  • Include any valid experience in the field - whether it's at research or intern level
  • Highlight the soft skills you'd bring about - those personality traits that have an added value to your application
  • Focus on your education and certifications, if they make sense for the role.

Key hard skills and soft skills for your travel manager resume

At the top of any recruiter travel manager checklist, you'd discover a list of technical competencies, balanced with personal skills.

Hard or technical skills are your opportunity to show how you meet the essential responsibilities of the role. The ability to use a particular job-crucial technology or software would also hint to recruiters whether you'd need a prolonged period of on-the-job training - or you'd fit right in the job.

But to land your dream role, you'd also need to demonstrate a variety of soft or people resume skills . Employers care about soft skills as they show how each candidate would fit into the team and company culture.

Both types of skills are specific and to best curate them on your resume, you'd need to:

  • Create a skill section within which you showcase your hard and soft skills and present how they help you succeed.
  • List specific examples of projects, tasks, or competitions, within which your skill set has assisted your results.
  • Soft skills are harder to measure, so think about situations in which they've helped you thrive. Describe those situations concisely, focusing on how the outcome has helped you grow as a professional.
  • Metrics of success - like positive ROI or optimized workplace processes - are the best way to prove your technical and people skills.

Take a look at some of travel manager industry leaders' favorite hard skills and soft skills, as listed on their resumes.

Showcase academic background with education and certifications' sections

Listing your education and certifications should be a rudimentary part of your resume writing.

Including your relevant academic background - in the form of your higher education degree and niche-specific certificates - will prove knowledge of the industry.

For your education section:

  • Start by including your degree, followed by start and graduation dates, as well as the institution;
  • You could include relevant coursework, major/minor , or GPA, only if your've just graduated from college or if this information would further support your application;
  • If you have an "ongoing" degree, you can still list it in case you think your diploma can impress recruiters or it's required;

Follow a similar logic for your certifications section by listing the institution, alongside dates you've obtained the certificate. For some of the most recent and relevant industry certificates , check out the next part of our guide:

The top 5 certifications for your travel manager resume:

  • Global Travel Professional (GTP) - Global Business Travel Association (GBTA)

  • Travel and Tourism Professional (TTP) - International Air Transport Association (IATA)
  • Certified Corporate Travel Executive (CCTE) - National Business Travel Association (NBTA)
  • Certified Government Travel Professional (CGTP) - Government Travel and Meetings Association (GTMA)

If you happen to have plenty of certificates, select the ones that are most applicable and sought-after across the industry. Organize them by relevance to the role you're applying for.

Adding a summary or objective to your travel manager resume

One of the most crucial elements of your professional presentation is your resume's top one-third. This most often includes:

  • Either a resume summary - your career highlights at a glance. Select the summary if you have plenty of relevant experience (and achievements), you'd like recruiters to remember about your application.
  • Or, a resume objective - to showcase your determination for growth. The perfect choice for candidates with less experience, who are looking to grow their career in the field.

If you want to go above and beyond with your travel manager resume summary or resume objective, make sure to answer precisely why recruiters need to hire you. Your travel agent work experience bullet points

While the job description is a priceless source of insight when it comes to what the company’s looking for, recruiters want to see your ability to solve problems and overcome obstacles.

In other words, don’t just repeat the job requirements as experience points. Frame your experiences as “Here’s how I did this!” and not “Yeah, I can do that.” Look at the organization’s website if you need additional inspiration for current obstacles that are similar to issues you’ve solved before, and set your success off with active verbs and language.

And don’t forget to substantiate your awesome work experience with metrics! Quantifiable data can transform the credibility of your travel agent resume, especially since you work with so much of it each time you budget for a trip or organize notes for an itinerary.

  • ROI improvements show your ability to optimize travel budgets
  • Savings in dollars highlight your budgets skills, too, alongside your ability to boost profits
  • Increased return percentages demonstrate how you keep clients coming back next trip!

3 Tips for Writing a Travel Agent Resume if You Have Limited Experience

  • If you’re just starting out as a travel agent, you might need an itinerary of your own. Consider using an objective statement on your resume! This concise paragraph should outline why you want the job and provide some excellent scheduling and interpersonal skills that qualify you for it.
  • Of course, you’ll want to mention a degree like Tourism and Hospitality Management, but you can also list relevant accomplishments from school. If you have an excellent GPA, took additional relevant courses, or earned any academic achievements, these can help make up for limited experience.
  • The same idea from our previous tip also applies to internships! Let recruiters know if you completed any internships, similar activities, or even volunteer initiatives related to travel or hospitality. Not every qualification has to be a paid job to still count in your favor!

3 Tips for Writing a Travel Agent Resume if You Already Have Some Experience

  • You don’t want an overcrowded resume any more than you’d want to overbook someone’s travel calendar! You want to have a little breathing room, so limit your work experience section to just three or four of your most relevant jobs.
  • If you’ve had a few years of experience as a travel agent, consultant, or similar role, you don’t need to depend as much on academic experiences for credibility. Focus more on your professional achievements in the workforce and highlight examples of how you’ve overcome relevant obstacles!
  • Now’s a good time to weigh the pros and cons of a resume summary . If you’ve had plenty of experience in one role (or several similar ones), you might be able to eliminate some redundancy and tie it all together with a summary. But if you have many diverse experiences demonstrating your prowess, you might not need one.

We know it can be tough, but keep to a one-page resume ! You probably have loads of stories to share about how you knocked that one travel budget out of the water, but recruiters crave brevity. If you’re having trouble staying within the one-page limit, set some experiences aside for a cover letter.

Your metrics should fortify the final impact of your skills. What results did you create with your ability to book flights quickly and find the perfect little Airbnb just in time? Look for quantifiable data that strengthens your final point and avoid free-floating numbers like headcounts or booking quantities.

Yes, please! Whether you have just one or several, include additional credentials like a Certified Travel Counselor (CTC) or a Certified Cruise Counselor (CCC). Not only do they emphasize your industry niche, but they demonstrate your ambition as well.

ATS Friendly Resume Format Explained

Applicant tracking system (ATS) is software job recruiters use to automatically import, scan, filter, and rank resumes submitted when candidates upload them to job postings. ATS cannot read and process documents with fancy formats. A resume with tables, charts, images, two columns, boxes, headers, and footers, will likely be rejected by the ATS before a human sees it. Professional resumes use a simple, text-only format. LinkedIn is the place to add images, videos, articles, and other creative examples of your work.

Good Vs Bad ATS Resume Examples

Travel, tourism resume layout job recruiters expect to see:

Format: use reverse-chronological work experience resume format. List your most recent job at the top.

Fonts: use narrow width fonts like Calibri or another sans-serf font like Arial

Heading font-size: 11 or 12-point size

Body text font-size: 10.5 is the standard resume font size, but 10 or 11 are acceptable.

Line spacing: prefer .5 between experiences, but 0 is acceptable.

Resume margins: .5 or .75 inches all around.

Dates: include year and month 01/202-07/2023.

File type: submitting a resume in Microsoft Word is acceptable. A PDF is not required.

Travel, tourism resume critical parts and sections:

Header: Your contact information.

Headline: One line that summarizes your skills and presumed new job goals

Biography: 5-8 sentence summary of your abilities and accomplishments.

Skills: add your skills that match the jobs you seek in common industry terminology.

Work Experience: your job scope and quantifiable achievements.

Education: degrees, certifications, and certificates.

Cruise ship operations to resume from Baltimore later this month, port confirms

travel operations resume

Cruises from Baltimore will resume later this month.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas will leave from the city on May 25. That will mark the first cruise ship to do so since the March collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , the Port of Baltimore said in a Facebook post .

Vision of the Seas will sail a round-trip cruise to Bermuda, according to CruiseMapper . Royal Caribbean previously moved the ship’s operations to Norfolk, Virginia in the wake of the bridge collapse.

“Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again,” a spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “Vision of the Seas will set sail on a 5-night itinerary as planned on Saturday, May 25 after completing its previously scheduled drydock in the Bahamas.”

Carnival Cruise Line also expects to return this month.

Carnival will embark guests on Carnival Pride’s May 19 cruise in Norfolk, but anticipates it will end the trip in Baltimore.

“We are encouraging our guests to register for our complimentary bus service between Baltimore and Norfolk for the sailing's embarkation,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement. “We remain in close contact with local, state and federal officials regarding the return of our operations at the Port of Baltimore.”

OFFICIAL: Emirates Airline to resume operations in Nigeria on October 1

Cyrus Ademola

Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates Airline, has confirmed that the airline will resume operations in Nigeria on 1 October 2024 after two years of suspending its services in the West African country.

Kazim said on Wednesday that Emirates will operate a daily service between Lagos and Dubai, providing passengers from Nigeria’s largest city with enhanced options and connectivity through Dubai.

The flights will be conducted using a Boeing 777-300ER. Flight EK783 will depart from Dubai at 0945hrs, arriving in Lagos at 1520hrs.

Air Peace follows Emirates, suspends Dubai route over non-issuance of visas

The return flight, EK784, will depart Lagos at 1730hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0510hrs the following day.

He noted that tickets are currently available for booking on emirates.com or through travel agents.

Emirates Airline halted its flight operations to Nigeria in October 2022 because it couldn’t repatriate funds held in the country.

The airline attributed the suspension to the $85 million revenue trapped in Nigeria.

What Emirates is Saying

According to Kazim, Emirates is resuming operations in Nigeria, marking a significant expansion of its network. He said the airline now operates to 19 destinations across Africa, providing a total of 157 weekly flights departing from Dubai.

He highlighted that Emirates’ network extends even further, reaching an additional 130 regional locations across Africa.

This expansion is facilitated through codeshare and interline partnerships with several airlines, including South African Airways, Airlink, Royal Air Maroc, and Tunis Air.

Kazim said the strategic importance of these partnerships enhances connectivity and offers more travel options to Emirates’ customers throughout the continent.

“We are excited to resume our services to Nigeria. The Lagos-Dubai service has traditionally been popular with customers in Nigeria and we hope to reconnect leisure and business travellers to Dubai and onwards to our network of over 140 destinations.     “We thank the Nigerian government for their partnership and support in re-establishing this route and we look forward to welcoming passengers back onboard,” he said.

Backstory

In an earlier interview with Arise TV and reported by Nairametrics in April , the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had said the Federal Government is working with the authorities of Emirates Airline for the resumption of the airline service in the country.

According to Keyamo, there is a high likelihood that the airline might resume operations in June 2024 after two years of suspending its services to Nigeria.

  • The minister noted that President Bola Tinubu played a significant role in resolving the frosty relations between the two countries.
  • According to the minister, the Nigerian government and the United Arab Emirates have resolved issues, and the airline is set to announce the date for its first flight.
  • “Emirates flight resumption is almost happening. I just received a letter from Emirates. The letter is on my phone now. They have gone through all the gamut, and they are ready to come back. They will announce the date because to restart a route, they have to get an aircraft for that route,” he said.
  • In October 2022, Emirates suspended its flight operations to Nigeria due to an inability to repatriate funds held within the country.
  • The airline cited the suspension in October as a result of approximately $85 million in revenue being trapped in Nigeria.

Cruise ships to return to Baltimore two months after bridge collapse

Royal Caribbean and Carnival temporarily relocated to Norfolk after the Key Bridge collapse in March.

travel operations resume

Cruises will soon set sail from Baltimore again, resuming operations two months after a cargo ship took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

In an X post on Wednesday, the Port of Baltimore revealed that Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas would leave on May 25 for a five-night trip to Bermuda. It will be the first cruise from a major carrier that leaves from Baltimore since the deadly bridge collapse on March 26.

The cruise line confirmed the news, saying in a statement it “looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again.”

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though only two had ships based at the port during the spring. No cruise ships were in port when the accident happened. After some scrambling , Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line both moved their Baltimore-based operations to Norfolk.

Carnival said in a statement that it plans to sail the Pride from Norfolk on May 19. That ship is expected to finish the cruise in Baltimore a week later. Because of those plans, the cruise line is encouraging guests to make their way to Baltimore ahead of the trip, and take a free, Carnival-provided bus more than 200 miles to Norfolk.

The ship is scheduled to leave Baltimore for a 14-day Greenland and Canada itinerary on May 26 before resuming seven-day Bahamas or Caribbean cruises.

“We remain in close contact with local, state and federal officials regarding the return of our operations at the Port of Baltimore,” Carnival said. The port said Wednesday it could only confirm Royal Caribbean’s schedule.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have any Baltimore sailings scheduled until September. American Cruise Lines, a smaller company that operates river and coastal cruises, was able to start operating Chesapeake Bay trips from Baltimore earlier this month.

More than 444,000 people cruised out of Baltimore’s port last year, according to a news release issued by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

GM’s Cruise Resumes Robotaxi Tests in Phoenix with New Safety Measures

C ruise, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of General Motors, has resumed testing its robotaxis in Phoenix after a significant operational halt in the United States. The company is implementing a “supervised” testing phase with a human safety operator present, marking its initial steps towards resuming full operations.

This development comes as part of Cruise’s broader effort to regain trust and meet safety benchmarks following a disruptive incident in San Francisco last year that led to regulatory and operational setbacks.

In a recent blog post, Cruise outlined its plans to deploy two autonomous vehicles on public roads in the Phoenix metropolitan area, signaling the start of a critical validation phase. These vehicles will operate under the watchful eyes of safety operators, while another eight vehicles will be manually driven to further assess and fine-tune the technology. The testing aims to:

  • Validate the autonomous technology against strict safety and performance standards set by the company.
  • Gradually expand these tests to include other suburbs around Phoenix such as Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler.

This strategic shift to Phoenix reflects a cautious approach by Cruise, focusing on a smaller scale of operations compared to its previous extensive activities in San Francisco, where it is headquartered. The company began mapping and gathering road data in Phoenix in April with manually driven vehicles, laying the groundwork for this supervised testing phase.

The October 2 incident in San Francisco, where a pedestrian was struck and dragged by a Cruise robotaxi, profoundly impacted the company. The fallout from this event led to:

  • The suspension of Cruise’s deployment and driverless testing permits by California regulators.
  • A halt in operations not just in California but also in other testing locations like Austin and Miami.

In response, Cruise undertook significant internal restructuring, including leadership changes and layoffs. Kyle Vogt, co-founder and CEO, resigned, and Cruise brought in GM executives to bolster its board, aiming to stabilize the organization and restore credibility.

Moreover, an extensive review by the law firm Quinn Emanuel concluded that Cruise did not intentionally mislead regulators. The report pointed to poor judgment, leadership errors, strained relations with regulators, and a preoccupation with correcting public misconceptions about the incident as critical issues. This narrative had inaccurately portrayed the Cruise autonomous vehicle as the cause of the accident, instead of the human-operated Nissan involved.
