It’s not surprising that the Starfield Library is so popular

With that kind of hype, it wasn’t long before foreign tourists and expats jumped on the bandwagon. Search for #starfieldlibrary, and you’ll find another 36.6k tagged posts. Here’s why:

  • it’s a massive 2 story, 2,800 square metre sprawling space full of light and glass
  • 50,000 books fantastically decorate 3 towering bookshelves, each standing a whopping 13 metres tall
  • rotating centrepieces have included a kitschy fruit / veggie tree and a gorgeous tower of books
  • there are almost 600 domestic and foreign magazines available for browsing
  • the owner, Shinsegae, invested 6 billion won to develop and create the Starfield Library
  • it will cost 500 million won per year to maintain it

This gorgeous tower of books is way better than the fruit / veggie tree imho

One of the most fascinating things about this book lover’s paradise is its location in the middle of Starfield Coex Mall – which is itself Asia’s largest underground shopping mall.

Fun fact: the Starfield Library is actually credited with singlehandedly increasing chronically low visitor numbers to the Mall since its opening. I’d believe it. Because that place is literally crawling with people now, and it never was before.

What can I do at the Starfield Library?

The Starfield Library has 2 separate floors, which can be accessed using escalators inside the library itself.

Aside from gawking at those colossal bookshelves and taking selfies, you can also do traditional library type things. 😉

There’s a huge number of books covering pretty much every topic under the sun, which you’ll mostly find on the B1 level. However, since you can’t actually check books out of this library, your time might be better spent browsing through the 600 magazines on offer instead.

travel library seoul

There’s a rotating schedule of performances and author talks at the library.

There’s also a rotating schedule of author readings, talks and lectures that takes place on this level. All of these are free and you just might stumble upon one when you visit.

First Floor

When you need a rest, you can head up to the second floor for coffee and cake at Billy Angel Cake Company, pick up some snacks at the E-Mart convenience store, or enjoy some fine chocolate at Teuscher.

And yes, you can take whatever book or magazine you’re reading with you to these locations. You can also exit the library on this level.

TIP  |  After seeing the Starfield Library, head to the largest aquarium in Seoul, with over 40,000 sea animals. Score discounted tickets to the COEX Aquarium here (23,500 vs 32,000 won on-site).

Tips for visiting

The Starfield Library is more of a cultural space, than traditional library. Don’t go there expecting a quiet, reserved space to meditate on the words in front you.

People go there to meet friends, snap photos and take thousands of selfies. Yes, there are a few hardy bookworms actually reading, but if you have trouble concentrating in noisy environments, it’s definitely not the best choice for you.

people reading at Starfield Library

Yes, some people actually read or work there.

If you’d like to see the library at a quieter time, head there during the weekday, as close to opening time as possible (that’s 10AM).

For some really cool pictures, get on one of the multiple escalators in the space, and take shots while riding up and down them.

How to go to the Starfield Library

Address: 513, Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul | 서울특별시 강남구 영동대로 513

The Library’s location smack dab in the centre of the largest underground shopping mall in Asia is part of what makes it special. You can’t miss it… even if you have a terrible sense of direction like I do. You’ll literally run into it from every hallway in the mall.

starfield library map

Starfield Library is located in Starfield Coex Mall.

The easiest and most convenient way of getting to the Starfield Library is via Seoul subway. You can easily reach it from 2 separate subway lines.

Line 2: This is the closest subway line to the library. Get off at Samseong station Exit 6, and enter Coex Mall. There’s clear signage directing you to the library, but like I said… you really can’t miss it. All roads in the mall lead to the Starfield Library.

Line 9: Get off at Bongeunsa Station, and take Exit 1, 6, or 7. It’ll take you approximately 10-15 minutes to walk to the Starfield Library from this stop. If you’re planning to check out Coex Aquarium at the same time, Bongeunsa is the closer stop.

Where to Stay near Starfield Library

This is a popular area of the city to use as a base for traveling. It has excellent transit links, and is located right next to Seoul’s City Air Terminal, where it’s possible to catch direct limousine buses to Incheon Airport.

There are several hotels within a 10 minute walk or actually connected to the Starfield COEX Mall complex. However, there aren’t a ton of true budget options in this area. You’ll have to stay a little further away from the main hub if you have a strict budget.

it looks amazing! But I want to know is = how do you access the books? in the pics it looks like the world’s highest book shelves

' src=

Hahahaha – this is the question of the hour, and one I don’t know the answer to! I’m gonna head back to the library and find out the answer. Apparently, there’s a new display in the middle too!

' src=

Wish it had been there when I visited! My first stay was so close to the COEX mall, and I would have loved to pop in there to see the library. (Since there was no library, I spent my time on other sightseeing, not being a big mall person!) Very cool.

Between bad weather and air, and Naia’s classes, I’ve spent FAR too much time in the mall for someone who pretty much hates the mall BUT it’s always a pleasure to pass through this library. Anyway, it just gives you a good reason to come back and visit (other than meeting me in person of course – we might even be able to drag that introvert Cheryl out of hiding for you). 😉

I would LOVE to come back and see you, Cheryl, and the library! I’m doing a steady drip, drip, drip job on my husband about a trip to Asia with me. I went to Bhutan without him also, after China, Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia, S Korea, etc. in previous years. He’s just so annoying about it, but I do get that Asia takes time, and his job doesn’t allow for as much of it as mine does. Someday …

Husbands ARE incredibly annoying, aren’t they? 😉 One day we shall make it happen… and we can leave all the husbands in a pile somewhere and go have fun.

Seoul is a city that’s full of beautiful spots that are amazing to visit (and also for great pictures in your Instagram feed ). But nothing compares to the magical feeling you get when you walk into bookstores or libraries. It’s a space full of endless possibilities – you can get lost in a world of a Roman emperor or be a space pirate! There are no restrictions! You’re welcomed by thousands of books, all waiting to be picked up.

As a booklover, there is enjoyment in being able to browse aisle upon aisles of books all day long. For someone who hasn’t been in a place like this, it feels like finding peace in the usual hub-bub of city life. Something is comforting about being surrounded by books all around!

The city really knows how to showcase books beautifully, be it in stunning super-tall bookshelves in Starfield Library or the corridor with an archway of books that goes right up to the ceiling in Arc N Book bookstore. The whole experience is somewhat reminiscent of being in the great outdoors. It could be because of the musky smell of paperbacks. Or the tranquillity found in the rows of bookshelves as they hover above like tall trees.

Bookstores in Seoul have transformed into a haven to disconnect from smart devices and find solace from stresses of daily life. Some stores not only serve as a place to purchase books, but there are events organized routinely. There are book signings, thought-provoking lectures, and other cultural events to attract more people to visit.

Table of Contents

Its not just about books!

Many people gather at bookstores to socialize with friends at one of the adjoining restaurants or cafes . Seoul bookstores definitely have the concept of comfy, cozy vibes done right. So, even if you are not too into the books, you can enjoy these places as a place to hang out with friends.

In South Korea, coffee has become the number one caffeinated beverage of choice, and there are several cafés to boost your addiction. Some bookstores are incorporating coffee into the mix to provide an enhanced book browsing experience.

Ranging from concept book galleries to beloved independent gems, Seoul is definitely the city that has them all!

Starfield Library

At the center of Seoul’s Starfield COEX Mall , you’ll find one of Korea’s most popular sites, the Starfield Library. It is truly one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. It’s best known for its giant bookshelf, which towers at a whopping 13 meters (43 feet!). The library spans over 2,800 square meters! The Starfield Library is home to more than 50,000 books and magazines. Although most of them are written in the Korean language, there is an entire section that is dedicated to foreign titles and internationally acclaimed authors.

Starfield Library

The library is a popular spot among both tourists and locals. It isn’t like a standard library as it can often get crowded and noisy. And you cannot check out books to enjoy at home. But, there’s always a place for you to sit and read. There are around 200 seats available in the library. Additionally, this place also acts as a venue for various lectures, mini-concert, and more, allowing visitors to enjoy a variety of cultural events within its premises.

It has become quite the instagrammable spot for bibliophiles, tourists, and Belle-wannabes alike. The library has become a place to enjoy both books and beverages, regardless of the weather. Starfield Library is the perfect place to go for the authentic “reading entertainment” experience!

Arc N Book is another Instagram favorite with its warm ambiance and vintage architecture. It is a mix between a bookstore and a lifestyle space. There is a Harry Potter-esque book tunnel that welcomes you near the entrance. In this tunnel, there is an archway of books that goes right up to the ceiling. Further in, you can find the Ministry of Magic (Harry Potter) entrance-like bright red telephone booths which house computer stations to help you locate books. There are functional lamp posts and park benches next to the booth to complete the vintage vibe!

bookstores in seoul

The bookstore is unique in another aspect. Books in the store are curated based on four themes – Daily, Weekend, Style, and Inspiration. The Daily section features books on family, career, & everyday living. The Weekend area showcases hobbies, sports, & leisure, while the Style section has an expansive collection of art & fashion. And of course, the Inspiration section features books on history, travel, movies, & philosophy. The store stocks around 30,000 books, with most of them being in Korean, but they do have a relatively good amount of English books.

As you move further inside, you will find an international variety of restaurants that serve cuisines from all over the world. For coffee lovers, there is a Sikmulhak (식물학 카페), or Botany Café, which can serve you your favorite dark roast.

Book Park is a part of Blue Square, a performing arts hall built by Interpark, in the Yongsan district of Itaewon. It was made with intentions of creating a space that is “as breezy & tranquil as reading at a park.” To give you a treehouse-like feeling, it has several reading nooks and hideaways. People flock to the Book Park to take photographs with super-tall bookshelves! They run from floor to ceiling – nearly 88 feet high!

seoul libraries

Book Park is an all-in-one bookstore, coffee shop, and art gallery. It is perfect for bookworms of all ages. Each floor of this two-story establishment is lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, holding a total of 100,000 books. Most of the books are for the categories in arts & science and only few are foreign. The bookstore frequently hosts supporting lectures & book seminars held inside its enormous conference hall. Besides, they also sell accessories, stationery, toys, and a wide assortment of knick-knacks!

Both floors also have their very own cafes, including Seoul’s famous specialty coffee chain, Holly’s Coffee. The best part about Book Park? It’s one of those rare places that allows you to borrow a book and enjoy it over a cup of coffee! With 200 seats available for visitors, everyone can kick back and enjoy their generous selection of titles

Book by Book

As you enter Book by Book, you will come across a unique sight where people are enjoying books with a chilled beer! Usually, you find a combination of comforting words like coffee and books together, giving you a sense of relaxation and a good time. Located in Gwanghwamun, Book by Book offers you a pleasant time with a book and beer. It is especially popular amongst business people working in the region.

Book by Book bookstore

Book by Book also offers book signing, book talk events, and one-day classes, allowing visitors to not only enjoy books but a variety of activities as well.

If you like both book and beer, that’s plenty of reason to add this place to your South Korea travel itinerary.

Naver Library

The Naver Library is in the office lobby of, you know it, the Naver company. Naver is the Google of Korea – you don’t Google, but you Naver whatever information you need. The library is famous for its beautiful design and its unique books. Even though it is in the office lobby of a company, it is open for everyone. You just need to carry your ID card to go inside. All the bookshelves have plants potted on the topmost shelf. Unlike standard libraries, the design for each area has been differently materialized to present the most optimized experience suitable for the characteristic of the book.

Naver Library

The books in the library are curated more in the categories of design and technology. You can find expensive design books (17,000), thick encyclopedias (1,300), trendy brand new IT books (7,000), and almost 250 kinds of worldwide magazines which are generally unavailable in other libraries. The books are arranged on the shelf, not showing their spines but their covers.

There is a lovely book café section in the library for a cup of coffee. The cafe fills the library with the aroma of the coffee, which makes the atmosphere soft and tender.

Address : NAVER Green Factory, 6 Buljeong-ro, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, Seoul

Hours : 9:00 – 21:00 (Weekday), 10:00 – 17:00 (Weekends) * Closed Public Holidays

Seoul Book Repository

It is Seoul’s very first public second-hand bookstore. It has a very striking interior with an industrial warehouse-vibe with a whopping 1,400 square meter area. An old warehouse, used previously for storing American marketing giant Amway’s products in southeastern Seoul, has been turned into the Seoul Book Repository. Round openings create a tunnel with rows of iron-frame bookshelves. Visitors can drift along this passageway, looking for a good read from the shelves stretching out on either side.

bookstores in seoul

You can find over 120,000 books on the shelves! It gets its books from 25 other second-hand bookstores around the city and takes 10% from sales. The books are grouped based on the supplier, and each bookstore has its own cataloging system. It’s like a mini version of each book store under one roof.

It definitely a cool space to come and wander about while taking pictures. You will undoubtedly find an interesting book or two.

Address : Ogeum-ro 1, Songpa-gu, Seoul (14, Sincheon-dong) South Korea

Hours : 11:00 – 20:00 (Weekday), 10:00 – 20:00 (Weekends) * Closed every Monday

Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/seoulbookbogo_official/

  • Even if you can’t read Korean or not a books-fan, you should still visit one of these numerous bookstores or libraries around Seoul. It will definitely be a unique sensory experience.
  • If you need assistance in looking for a particular book, do not hesitate to ask customer service. If there is a language barrier, you can show the photo of the book cover to communicate.
  • The prices are comparable to US standards. Although nothing can beat the prices of online retailers, nothing can match a bookstore experience.
  • You can check out the Social Media pages of the stores and libraries to know more about the organized events. If you find something interesting, you can add it to your itinerary.

Hyundai Card Travel Library

Inspirational space for world travellers.

travel library seoul

“Hyundai Card Travel Library opened in 2014 in the quiet but luxurious shopping district of Cheongdam in southern part of Seoul. The second of Hyundai Card’s themed libraries, Travel Library is home to nearly 15,000 books on travel, history, and culture, which are curated together to provide broader perspective on travel. In addition to books, the collection also contains maps of 92 different cities.

The library’s interior was designed around the concept “stock of curiosity,” with floor-to-ceiling shelves that mimic the atmosphere of a cave. The concept was created and executed by internationally renowned interior architect Masamichi Katayama of the global architecture firm Wonderwall.

A Cave of Curiosity

“We wanted the library to offer a sense of unpredictability and inquisitiveness that might be rare in Cheongdam-dong, a neighborhood known more as the home of Seoul’s luxury brands,” said a Hyundai Card Travel Library manager. ”We believe that travel is not about consumption, but about finding a new path in a creative way. Travel is a theme that can inspire everyone. It is also the key to understanding different cultures. We therefore wanted to portray travel as an intellectual search for new experiences.”

travel library seoul

“The library was created as a way to understand travel, one of today’s fastest-growing lifestyle sectors, through the medium of a library, one of society’s prototypical cultural spaces. In this way, we hope to juxtapose new and old.”

Travel Library is accessible only to Hyundai Card holders. The interior is designed to invoke the excitement that comes with departure, with airplane figurines, vintage globes, antique furniture, compasses and exploration tools from around the world placed around the premises. At the entrance, a vintage slit-flat departure board updates every 30 minutes with real-time flight information from Incheon International Airport.

Collections to Explore

Travel Library’s book collection is curated around two main concepts: Theme and Region.

In the Theme section, books on destinations around the world are mixed together under the headings of Arts & Heritage, Adventure & Activities, and Lifestyle & Landscape. Visitors with a certain type of trip in mind but no designated destination can freely explore the world at once under any chosen theme. Meanwhile, in the Region section, guidebooks and other material on specific countries and cities help visitors plan their trips in detail. A separate dictionary section covers languages spoken by 99 percent of the world’s population.

Travel Library is also home to the complete collection of National Geographic magazine from its first issue in 1888 to today. In addition, it accommodates the complete collections of the world’s first and only journal of cartography, Imago Mundi, and the Royal Asiatic Society’s Korea-based academic journal, Transactions.

Find, Play, and Plan

To engage visitors with the act of travel, the library was designed with three extra rooms: Find Room, Play Room, and Plan Room.

In the Find Room, visitors begin their journey with a wall of maps from 92 different cities around the world. On the ceiling hang dozens of plane figurines.

In the Play Room, a wall-sized LCD of Google Earth lets visitors explore the globe digitally. The library’s custom Google Earth program includes Google’s 3D maps, satellite maps, and Street View data, as well as Travel Library-curated journeys through the world’s best destinations for art, adventure, music, and more. Finally, in the Plan Room, visitors can plan their own trips using freely-offered blank maps of popular destinations. They can also share their ideas on the walls, which are covered in whiteboard.

Starfield library isn't the only library in seoul an overview of seoul libraries, featured in k-dramas.

travel library seoul

There are all sorts of cool spots in and around Seoul. Today, we're going to be talking about libraries.

When you think grand libraries, maybe you'll have the COEX Starfield Library in mind. But there are so many more awesome libraries to be found in Seoul, including those that are social media worthy or were featured in K-dramas.

I recommend visiting Book Park during the day. Leaf through books with the sunlight pouring through the large windows and take pictures of the books on display.

Itaewon Seoul library, book park blue square

Compared to the loud and bustling Starfield Library or the super organized Arc.N.Book, Book Park is calmer and grander.

Overall, the irregular colors surrounding the shelves make for great Insta photos.

There are books galore on each floor, which almost make you feel like you're walking through time and space. Just like in Chicago Typewriter. You're going to want to stay here forever.

The Forest of Wisdom has tens of thousands of books donated by Korean publishers, and is also a coffee shop. Even if you're not an avid book reader, you're going to be inspired to pick up a book once you're here.

The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are all filled with books, all grandly organized. You can read any of the books, but only while within the library.

The K-Drama What's Wrong With Secretary Kim was shot at the Forest of Wisdom.

I recommend you finish your shopping spree at the Paju Outlet and come over to the Forest of Wisdom to take some amazing photos (and read a book).

When you first step in, you'll walk into a large hall with a comfortable wooden design.

The stair-like seats are perfect for picking up a book and getting to it right away as well as for hosting book-related events.

There were not events happening on my visit, but I was able to capture locals and children freely browsing and reading books.

Upstairs you'll find the media library with touches of yellow. You can watch movies and video clips here on desktop computers and iPads.

songpa book museum entrance of the permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition explores the past, present and future of books. It'll take you back in time all the way to Joseon Dynasty.

It explores the past of books and reading.

You'll find Sookhyangjeon , a classic Korean novel from the 17th century as well as furniture from the olden times like desks and bookshelves.

memorizing scriptures from joseon dynasty shown at the permanent exhibition of songpa book museum

You can try out a couple of things at the exhibition too! The photo above is me trying out Gyeongseotong , a container for memorizing scriptures.

They wrote down phrases they need to memorize, put them in the container and carried it around to study on the go.

The one I got was 월광독서, roughly meaning even when one is poor to the point of relying on moonlights instead of candle lights, studying needs to be done diligently. It sounds like something my mom would say.

a thick book open and displayed at the permanent exhibition of songpa book museum

The second space of the exhibition shows the present days of books and reading!

You can see the overall trends of books and how Korean authors get their books published.

It'll be an interesting one to check out for those who love books regardless of the language the books are written in.

a book surrounded by loads of floating paper

I personally think this is the coolest space at Songpa Book Museum.

It feels like a scene from a K-pop music video! Definitely pose for a photo or two here.

room layouts of Korea's famous authors

The above photos show brainstorming notes of mystery thriller author Jeong You-jeong's. You can see how much thinking and planning she does before writing her mysteries.

Here, you can see rooms of publishers' and designers' and really feel how much work and effort of many go in before a book is born.

book printing tool

The next section is about typography.

The first lead-type letterpress print was first made in Joseon in 1436. It was not successful in commercialization then and Germany later started using it widely.

You can try out letterpress printing at the museum too! I was happy they came out so beautiful.

Be sure to do a couple to take home as souvenirs.

7 Cool Libraries & Bookstores in Seoul

travel library seoul

Is anyone surprised to discover there are some incredible libraries and bookstores in Seoul?

As anyone who’s been in Korea long enough knows, this country is packed in. Owning a house is very uncommon, and more often families rent apartments in skyscrapers and live together in incredibly enclosed spaces.

This is why I believe public places are so popular, especially in even more densely populated places. Just think of how many cafes in Seoul there are, not to mention just how common it is to find one even in the most rural of areas. You also have tons of parks and green space throughout the city for warmer months.

Well, no surprise, there are plenty of libraries and bookstores to come study or work at! I love Korea’s book culture, where it does seem people still prefer buying or renting physical books rather than reading everything online. Here are some of my picks for cool spots to check out!

7 Cool Libraries & Bookstores in Seoul

travel library seoul

1. Arc n Book (아크앤북)

On KakaoMap // Use Eulljiro 1ga Station, Exit 1-1

Arc N Book is more of a mix between a bookstore and lifestyle space. In between checking out their book selection and taking a photo of their Gatsby themed, art deco interiors, they also have restaurants and sitting areas to hang out. Hallie and I actually got a super delicious meal at the Taiwanese restaurant there!

2. Bandi & Lundis (반디앤루니스)

On KakaoMap (Express Bus Terminal)

Bandi & Lundis is a bit of a franchise, but my favorite location is at the Seoul Express Bus Terminal where it’s part of the Shinsegae Mall. I used to always bus to Seoul from Namwon, so I killed a lot of time wandering (and shopping heh) through B&L’s selection! They always had the best adult coloring books.

It’s actually quite huge now, with two parts: the bookstore section and another section with random knickknacks and office or school supplies. Seriously, proceed with caution, or you’ll walk away with tons of random, cute stationery you definitely don’t need!

travel library seoul

3. Book Park in Blue Square (북파크)

On KakaoMap // Get off at Hangangjin Station, Exit 2

Popped over here with Hallie and Angie after we visited the D Museum! Book Park is a mix of bookstore, cafe, and an art gallery. Since it has a ton of seats and tables, it’s actually one of the better spots on this list if you want actually do a little studying or work.

It’s part of the Blue Square , which is a performing arts hall built by Interpark. The whole Book Park section is multiple stories, and the big photo spot is by the staircase, so be prepared to see some photographers camped out!

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Ken Lum Lee | 📍Seoul (@klumlee) on Aug 23, 2016 at 11:34pm PDT

4. Naver Library (네이버라이브러리)

On KakaoMap // Use Jeongja Station, Exit 3. From there, you want to take Bus 55-1 and get off at Naver.

For one of the more random libraries in Seoul, the Naver Library is in the office lobby of, you guessed it, Naver company. Naver is the Google of Korea, quite literally. Like you don’t Google information here, you Naver it.

I remember seeing photos of the pretty green plants on top of the bookshelves, but I haven’t had a chance to visit yet myself! The type of books they have are more along the lines of design and technology, and there’s a nice cafe section. One lovely fact that I read was that the library specifically employs the elderly!

Apparently, you need some sort of ID to enter, so don’t forget to bring your ARC or passport.

travel library seoul

5. Seoul Book Repository (서울책보고)

On KakaoMap // Use Jamsilnaru Station (잠실나루역), Exit 1

Recently opened, the Seoul Book Repository has become Seoul’s very first public secondhand bookstore. Its industrial design is a nod to the bookstore’s recent use as an warehouse, and the shelves are filled with over 120,000 books.

It gets its books from other secondhand bookstores around the city and takes 10% from sales. Because the books are grouped by these bookstores rather than genre or title, it forces visitors to browse more rather than rush in and rush out. (Source)

This is definitely a cool place to come, photograph, and then wander and see what kind of interesting books you find. Marie and I had fun seeing the different English titles or books we already knew and loved! If you’re studying Korean, this is a fun place to come and pick up some books to read.

travel library seoul

6. Starfield Coex Library (별마당도서관)

Okay, so really the library name translates to Star Garden Library, but I think most people know it as the Starfield Coex Library as it’s in the COEX Mall .

Frankly speaking, this isn’t really a library or a bookstore but more an art piece of a photo spot. I do think they have events here sometimes, but if you’re hoping for a quiet spot to sit and relax or read, this is not it. When we went to escape the rain, it was crazy crowded. Also a lot of the bookshelves weren’t even books you could pull down and look at it but fake covers glued into the wall!

It’s a cool spot to see if you’re in the mall or nearby Bongeunsa, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to just see it unless you’re one of those people who plans your visits solely for the ‘gram.

7. Cheongun Literature Library (청운문학도서관)

On KakaoMap // Closest Bus Stop is Gyeonggi Sango Jongno (경기상고 정류장) and then it’s still a 10 min walk

I 100% am visiting here on my next trip because it looks so lovely! This is the only library on the list that has any sort of hanok design, and Cheongun is located near Inwangsan.

This also reminds me of most libraries I got used to Suncheon , where it’s definitely geared towards being a normal space for study and work. The highlight is the seating area with views to the bamboo garden and, of course, the area is nice to go for a stroll when you need a study break!

And those are my picks for fun bookstores or libraries in Seoul to visit on your next trip! Visit to hang out with friends, shop for some Korean novels, or to get some work done!

Suwon Starfield Library, Everything You Need to Know

There’s a new king of instagramable libraries in Korea. And just like the last one, it’s a Starfield Library. Unlike the last one, it’s not in Seoul. There’s nothing wrong with the Starfield Library in COEX . It’s a nice place to spend a lunch break or just chill between shopping sprints at the COEX mall. But, anything done once can be done better.

Or, at least bigger. By like double. Literally.

The newest Starfield Library in Suwon is massively huge clocking in at 4 floors with much more seating and more cafes, restaurants and open seating for visitors to relax or pose for pictures at. It’s a photographer’s dream and a Instagram husband’s nightmare, but there are a few things every traveler needs to know before they plan their visit.

Here’s everything you need to know before you visit the Suwon Starfield Library.

What is the Suwon Starfield Library?

The Starfield Libraries are libraries set inside Starfield malls which are a branded chain of massive mega malls in South Korea. As the name implies, they are libraries boasting impressive quantities of books, comics, and magazines for visitors to use at their leisure. And, being the newest one, the Suwon Starfield Library is the biggest and maybe best one… at least for now.

The first floor has books and recent magazines as well as e-readers and study desks open to the public. There’s also an open stair-seating arrangement perfect for getting some reading done. Most of the books in the unreachable sections of the library are decorative boxes, so you won’t be asking any librarians to risk life-and-limb getting them.

Since the library is four floors, there are four times as many visitors posing for photos at different parts of the library. The majority are on the 1st floor of the library (which is the 4th floor of the mall) at the main entrance. But, the photos taken from the upper levels are impressive as well.

Where is the Suwon Starfield Library?

The Suwon Starfield Library is located in the Suwon Starfield Mall which is located just outside Hwaseo Station on the no. 1 line just outside of Seoul. Just to reiterate, the Suwon Starfield Library is located about an hour outside of Seoul in the city of Suwon. The easiest way there is to travel to Sindorim Station on the the no. 1 and 2 lines and then take the no. 1 line straight to Hwaseo Station.

From the subway station, exit through exit no. 1 and head straight until you reach the stairs leading down to an underground street crossing. Follow this path for about 2 blocks and you’ll see the mall on your left. Cross the street and the crosswalk and you’ll be right there.

Once you’re inside the mall, you can use the escalators or elevators to head to the 4th floor. The Suwon Starfield Library is located in the center of the mall and impossible to miss.

Yes, assuming you’ll be spending some time in Suwon and the library is one of your stops. There are lots of great places to explore in Suwon including the Hwaseong Fortress as well as the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.

On the other hand, if you’re interested in a truly fun shopping experience with your four-legged family, the Suwon Starfield Mall is probably the most dog-friendly mall in Korea at the moment.

What Events are at the Suwon Starfield Library?

The Suwon Starfield Library has a monthly schedule of lectures, concerts and other events. The schedule can be found on the Starfield Events page (Korean only).

Tips for visiting the Starfield Library

Does your dog like books.

With the exception of most restaurants and cafes, the majority of the Suwon Starfield Mall is incredibly dog-friendly. So much so that they offer free dog-stroller rentals to visitors. Add in a dog-friendly restaurant, pet-relief station, dog-friendly stores, and a rooftop garden built specifically with dogs in mind and it’s the perfect combination.

Check Out “Vinyl”

Located on the 5th floor, Vinyl offers a unique experience and a view of the Suwon Starfield Library. For 18,500 KRW, visitors get a drink of their choice, headphones, a vinyl record player, and access to a staggering collection of vinyls. It is a vibe, and one worth checking out if you have the time.

Take in the View from the Top

The Suwon Starfield Library extends from the 4th floor of the Suwon Starfield Mall to the 7th. While most visitors will flock to the 4th floor, it’s worth visiting the 7th floor first. The view from the top down lets you look at the entire library at once and there are plenty of seats around the entirety of the library.

Best Libraries & Bookstores in Seoul

Arc N book

Libraries and bookstores have a mystical quality about them. As someone who loves the feel and sight of books, I get a warm fuzzy feeling browsing through shelves of books all day. Visiting libraries in Seoul is an experience that leaves me refreshed, much in the same way as a stroll through nature. They have really upped the game with their fabulous decor and interior designs that are bound to set any book lover’s heart ablaze.

ARC N BOOK (아크앤북)

Arc N Book is one of Seoul’s most popular Insta-famous bookstores. It has a lovely environment and historic architecture. It is both a bookstore and lifestyle space.

The Harry Potter-style book tunnel that greets you near the front entrance is easily recognizable and stunning! It also has a range of restaurants serving different cuisines from all over the world.

With four themes: Daily, Weekend, Style, and Inspiration, Arc N Book is an example of a themed bookstore in Seoul. You can find books on family, profession, and everyday living in the Daily section. The Weekend section featured hobbies, sports, and leisure activities. The Style area, on the other hand, provided a large selection of art and fashion. Lastly, the Inspiration section carries books on travel, history, and philosophy.

BOOK PARK IN BLUE SQUARE (북파크)

Book Park is a mix of a bookstore, cafe, and art gallery. It was designed with the goal of creating an environment that is “as light and airy as reading in a park.” It is located at The Blue Square , a performing arts center in Itaewon.

It’s ideal for readers of all ages and is the perfect bookstore in Seoul if you are traveling with kids. Most of their books are of arts and science genres, with only a few exceptions.

Plus, you can find a café on each floor, including Holly’s Coffee. The best part is that with 200 seats available, there is ample space for you to read a book while sipping a cup of coffee. This is one of the best bookstores/libraries to visit in Seoul.

STARFIELD COEX LIBRARY (별마당도서관)

The Starfield Library, located in the heart of Seoul’s Starfield COEX Mall, is one of Korea’s most popular attractions. Even though it isn’t really a bookshop, it is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous photo op libraries in the world.

It’s most famous for its massive bookcase, which stands at a stunning 13 meters (43 feet) tall. The library is 2,800 square meters in size!

It’s always crowded, so if you’re hoping for a quiet spot to sit and relax or read this might not be the place for you. But if you are looking for a place to escape the rain, this library might save the day.

SEOUL BOOK REPOSITORY (서울책보고)

Last on the list of the best libraries and bookstores to visit in Seoul is the Seoul book repository. It is the first public secondhand bookstore in Seoul. It boasts a remarkable interior with an industrial vibe and a 1,400 square meter footprint with shelves filled with over 120,000 books.

The Seoul book repository was converted from an old warehouse. It gets its books from other secondhand bookstores around the city. It is a great place to find interesting books that you can’t find anywhere else.

SEOUL, South Korea — A 22-year-old soldier stationed at Camp Humphreys was found unresponsive in his barracks Wednesday and later pronounced dead, according to the 2nd Infantry Division.

Spc. Jaggert Oakes, of Barberton, Ohio, was a human resources specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 11th Engineer Battalion, 2nd ID Sustainment Brigade, the command said in a news release Friday.

Oakes was pronounced dead at 10:23 a.m. Wednesday at Humphrey’s Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital, according to the release.

No criminal activity is suspected but the base’s Criminal Investigation Division is looking into the death, the release said.

Oakes was stationed in South Korea for less than a year, division spokesman Maj. Taylor Criswell said by phone Friday. Criswell declined to elaborate on the death, citing the ongoing investigation.

The 11th Engineer Battalion is “deeply saddened by the loss,” battalion commander Lt. Col. Brent Kinney said in the release.

“Spc. Oakes leaves behind a profound impact of friendship and camaraderie felt by all who had the privilege of serving alongside him,” he said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers as we mourn this loss together.”

Oakes enlisted in the Army in January 2019, according to the release. His awards include two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
