Let someone else drive you around town as you choose where you want to get off. This tour includes many popular attractions such as Chinatown, Stanley Park, and Gastown.

Granville island was awesome. But all the stops we saw were magnificent and educational. The Vancouver sightseeing was lovely although we did not make it to the Capilano suspension bridge. Great place to bring elderly parents. Very shady, mostly flat paths. Suspension bridge was challenging for them but overall stable to cross. My 82 year old father and 76 year old mother crossed the suspension bridge and did very well! Lots of shady paths and certain places to sit. We stayed for the raptor presentation and loved it. Great tour with amazing sights and wildlife; however, be aware of a lot of driving the first two days on the way to banff and on the last two days back to Vancouver. Furthermore the itinerary should be updated as there where some changes as to the description.

Ian our tour guide was amazing. Funny, knowledgeable, and very organized and informative. The sights were unbelievable and the trip arranged so every day you saw something spectacular. The 5 days were perfect as the pace was neither too fast or too slow. And we really enjoyed the group we were with. Great way to see the Canadian Rockies.

30 years on, Sarah McLachlan tours Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

'there's a lot of emotional energy attached to this record for a lot of people,' singer-songwriter says.

About 30 years ago, Canadian singer songwriter Sarah McLachlan released Fumbling Towards Ecstasy , her third studio album.

Now, she's going on tour  to pay tribute to the album that brought her so much success, but most of all, was written during a pivotal time in her life, and has made such an impact on her fans. 

"I talked to a lot of people over the past couple months, talking about how [ Fumbling Towards Ecstasy ] got them through the university experience or got them through a breakup or a divorce or whatever," McLachlan said. 

"I think there's a lot of emotional energy attached to this record for a lot of people. It'll be great to play it, start to finish."

The tour kicks off May 23 in Vancouver, where McLachlan has lived for over three decades. 

She sat down for an interview with CBC's Gloria Macarenko, host of On The Coast, ahead of the tour.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How would you describe your relationship with this album?

It was my easiest album to make. I was unencumbered in so many ways. I had no partner. I had no children. I got to sequester myself away in the woods in the Laurentians in Quebec and just focus 150 per cent on music. It was also my third record so I had gotten the sophomore freak-out out of the way and was just able to really dig into it and enjoy it. There was a real freedom during that time for me. It was easy and fun and joyful and fun to go back and revisit. Many of these songs I've continued to play through the years, but there's probably four or five of them that I haven't played in 25 years.

People don't play records in full. Nobody does that. They stream a whole bunch of different music. We used to really think hard on the emotional arc of a record and what song to put after the other one because you used to assume they all played as a whole.

You're playing 31 cities across North America in 44 days. How are you preparing for such a rigourous schedule?

I'm eating really healthily, which I do normally anyway. I'm getting a lot of exercise. I think for me, it's sleep. I need to sleep a lot. I'm very boring on the road. I don't talk much during the day to maintain my voice. I'm a little bit concerned about it only because I haven't done it in 10 years and I'm 10 years older. And there's many warranty issues that are now coming up as we age.

My mental energy, I have to sort of protect that a little bit. It's super fun and exciting, but it takes a lot of energy to put on a two-hour show every night and you know, just to recharge during the day is really important.

This is a fundraiser for the Sarah McLachlan School of Music. What difference will the money raised make for the school?

We rely 100 per cent on donations from folks. I fund the administrative costs every year, but it's not a cheap program to run. It's completely free for children and youth in Vancouver facing barriers to access. It's been almost 22 years now that we've had this school and it's always been free. We have locations in Vancouver, Surrey and Edmonton now, and we have over 1,000 kids for the three schools.

I love that we provide that opportunity for kids here in Vancouver. Music saved me. When I was growing up, I don't know what I would have done without it. I had lots of private music lessons. We had vibrant music programs in schools and a lot of kids don't have those opportunities these days. For me, recognizing the value and importance of a musical education for me, opening up my own emotional world and giving me a a sense of my own value and self worth, it was just paramount in my development as a human. To give kids that opportunity has just felt incredibly rewarding. 

I understand you are recording a new album. What can you tell us about that?

I've been working with a producer named Tony Berg and he is fantastic in bringing together lots of young, vibrant, creative musicians. 

I think we're probably going to finish it by October and hopefully have it out by May of next year. I know it seems like a long time, but it typically takes six months once the record's done to get it out to the people.

In an interview that you did recently with the Canadian Press, you talked about not being political, but whether you have that luxury of being apolitical anymore. 

I don't think any of us can be apolitical anymore. I think there's such division going on in the world and so much radicalizing of both sides. We have to figure out how to work together. I think music is an amazing bridge for that.

I think I had a lot of fear coming back into this. I suppose maybe I still do, just about speaking my mind and going to America and getting shot for it just because people are angry and afraid and they're not not necessarily behaving in a civilized manner sometimes. So sure, I have a little bit of fear about it but I have to speak my mind. If someone asked me a direct question, I'm going to answer.

With a resume that reads like a who’s who of contemporary and classic contemporary music, Louisiana artist Jon Batiste hails from a musical family with deep roots in the swinging brass band traditions of New Orleans. A multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for complex arrangements, Batiste is the second Black artist to win a Grammy award for album of the year for 2022s We Are. His most recent recording World Music Radio is a concept album that follows an alien being named Billy Bob Bo through a journey into musical knowledge. It also is full-on funky.

Sadé Awele: The Intuition Tour

One of the growing number of dynamic young artists coming up the ranks in the local scene, singer Sadé Awele has been turning heads and owing ears since the release of her EP, Intuition. This Nigerian-Canadian artist cites everyone from Stevie Wonder to Lauryn Hill and Beyoncé as influences and comes with a style all her own. As a participant in the Women in Studio Accelerator Program run by Music Publishers Canada, she has toured Europe, been awarded for her video for the song Intuition at the Paris Short Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival and is now back to blow minds locally.

Snoop Dogg Cali To Canada Tour

If there is one thing you can count on with a Snoop Dogg concert, it’s that the West Coast rap legend will be on the road with a crew ready to bring the party vibes to town. Case in point, the Cali To Canada tour, which brings Mr. Tha Dogg and G-funkers Warren G and DJ Quick as well as NYC DJ Green Lantern together for a night of smoking good times. Since the tour starts in Halifax on June 3, the Cali part is more personality than geography. But nobody really cares when Snoop is in the house.

Justice Add Vancouver Date to 2024 World Tour

The French duo bring 'Hyperdrama' to the PNE Coliseum in October

Justice have added a handful of dates to their ongoing world tour behind Hyperdrama , including a new Canadian performance in Vancouver.

A series of new stops for this fall will see the French duo bring their charged-up electronics to Vancouver's PNE Coliseum on October 8.

That performance follows a previously announced Canadian date in Montreal as part of Osheaga 2024 .

You can find the group's complete itinerary below. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, May 31 at 10 a.m. PT.

Sarah McLachlan wows hometown crowd at Vancouver kick-off of 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' 30th anniversary tour

The first notes of "Sweet Surrender" had the crowd at the Pacific Coliseum surging to their feet Thursday night (May 23) as Sarah McLachlan kicked off her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour in her adopted "hometown" of Vancouver.

The crowd was also a little taken aback; the first song on Fumbling , McLachlan's powerhouse 1994 album, is "Possession."

The singer-songwriter explained as soon as the opening song wrapped: If they started by playing Fumbling from track one, they'd be doing some of its biggest songs right up front and she worried the audience would find the second half dull.

That could hardly be the case with a veteran performer like McLachlan, who hasn't taken a full band out for a big tour in nearly a decade but whose show did not skip a beat.

Known for her poetic lyrics and pop-alt melodies, McLachlan's vast catalogue is rich ground from which to cull songs to round out a setlist - though the OG's among us clocked no inclusions from her pre- FTE albums, Touch or Solace . (Come on, Sarah, "Path of Thorns," pretty please? Can we bring "Vox" back like pop culture did for Kate Bush and "Running Up That Hill"?)

Anyone who wore out their VHS copy of 1994's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Live should have found the full performance of the album immensely gratifying, however, as over the years many of the songs have dropped off her concert setlist. What a treat to hear and see 2024 McLachlan take on "Ice," "Circle," and the title track, with her band (including longtime touring companions Luc Doucet and Melissa McLelland of Whitehorse) giving the songs full-throttle backing, including some of the album's signature dissonance that kept it stocked in the "Alternative" bins at the record store. 

Despite 'blown out' voice, vocals were incredible

McLachlan confessed she'd "blown out" her voice in tour rehearsals, but with the help of steroids seemed to be doing okay. Her vocals were consistently stunning from start to finish, from the mellow sentimentality of "I Will Remember You" to the skyscraper-high notes of "Fear." She did opt to almost short out her vocalization with the live arrangement in a couple of spots, namely (and ironically?) in "Fallen," when she says in the chorus "I've messed up" and in "Building a Mystery" when she says the f-word.

But McLachlan didn't shy from speaking the f-word; in her few short pauses to speak to the crowd she shouted out her two daughters who were in attendance and how f-ing proud she is of them and she also praised women and the power of female friendships for being f-ing amazing. The latter was in her intro to "Good Enough," which she explained was written to honour her best friend, who she met 36 years ago when McLachlan moved to Vancouver. Both that throwback and acknowledging Fumbling's big birthday prompted McLachlan to marvel "holy sh*t!"

Marking 30 years since Fumbling had McLachlan seeming more in awe of the timespan rather than purely nostalgic. McLachlan's music has a timeless quality, but in a crowd of mostly Elder Millennials and Gen X-ers, the nostalgia factor was dialled up to the rafters, especially during some of the singer's biggest hits.

Seeing people leap to their feet to shimmy and shake to "Hold On," a song about death, is always a bit surreal, but the unfailing crowd-pleaser is "Angel," which McLachlan saved for the encore (following her playing a brand new song for the album she's working on). 

"Angel," which on the surface smacks of maudlin sentimentality (thanks in no small part to those sad animal commercials once upon a time), is about watching music industry peers give or lose their lives to heroin addiction. (That's the angel, folks, it's a heroin high.) McLachlan finished the show with the late 90s hit off Surfacing with a former student from her Sarah McLachlan School of Music joining her on vocals.

Tour a fundraiser for music school; more B.C. dates announced

It was a fitting full-circle moment to end with a student, as McLachlan had used the "hometown" advantage of Vancouver to give the opening act to some of the school's past and present talent. The four performances were brilliant, showcasing a range of styles, from rapping teen brothers to some stunning covers.

The tour is also a fundraiser for the school, which has locations in Vancouver, Surrey, and Edmonton. $1 per ticket will be donated to the non-profit Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides high-quality music education and mentorship free to children and youth facing barriers to access, notes promoter Live Nation.

On Friday, McLachlan announced a full slate of additional dates for a Canadian leg of her FTE 30th Anniversary Tour. Though she will not play Vancouver again, the B.C. resident will be in Kelowna on Nov. 18 and Victoria on Nov. 20. Tickets are available starting Tuesday, May 28 with presales; general onsale begins Friday, May 31 at 10 a.m. local time.

Grayson Murray dies at age 30 a day after withdrawing from Colonial, PGA Tour says

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.

“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death and said it was heartbroken.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.

Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents to offer condolences, and they asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue.

He said grief counsellors would be on-site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events. Monahan said he was headed to Texas.

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

He had won the Barbasol Championship the year before.

Delta Mayor George Harvie drops out of Metro Vancouver directors' Amsterdam trip

Delta Mayor George Harvie, recently ousted as chair of the Metro Vancouver board by his own councillors, has decided to withdraw from an upcoming trip to Amsterdam by the region’s directors because he said he doesn’t want to be a “distraction.”

Harvie, who remains chair until July 1 after he asked for a transition period, said he won’t attend the International Conference on Urban Drainage and study tour on green infrastructure planned for June 7 to 16.

The upcoming trip includes meetings with the City of Rotterdam and expert presentations about urban drainage and flooding, lessons Harvie said “align with Metro Vancouver’s work to develop and update the region’s liquid waste and drinking water management plans.

“With my term as board chair coming to an end …, I have come to the difficult decision to forgo this learning opportunity. I do not wish to be a distraction to the continuing work at Metro Vancouver.”

Harvie said he will remain on the Metro Vancouver mayors’ committee after his term as chair ends.

During a May 6 meeting, Delta councillors approved several motions aimed at limiting the powers of the mayor to make decisions independent of council, after several said they had lost confidence in Harvie’s leadership. They also voted to strip the mayor of his role as Metro’s board chair.

After Harvie asked for a delay to allow an orderly transition at Metro, there was a tense exchange between the mayor and Coun. Dylan Kruger over the Netherlands trip, which is aimed at reviewing the lowland country’s diking system.

“So you’re asking for the opportunity to go to Amsterdam?” Kruger asked.

“I’m asking for the opportunity to join board members in Amsterdam, that has been set for quite some time, same as you’ve been travelling to Phoenix … (and) back east with regards to TransLink,” replied Harvie. “I mean, you’ve been travelling too.”

Kruger retorted: “I’ve not been to Amsterdam.”

After the ouster, four Delta councillors — Jennifer Johal, Daniel Boisvert, Rod Binder and Kruger — issued a statement saying the decision reflected “council’s loss of confidence in the mayor’s ability to effectively represent the city’s interests at Metro Vancouver.”

Harvie has characterized the move as political more than operational, noting

Harvie worked as Delta’s city manager from 2002 to 2018 before being elected to his first term as mayor and winning re-election in 2022. He has said he plans to run for a third term in 2026.

Longtime Delta councillor and mayor Lois Jackson earlier said she agrees the moves were political.

“Now there’s talk of (Harvie) running again” for a third term, Jackson told Postmedia News. “So Kruger has taken the rest of council and said, ‘Come with me, we are now going to replace George Harvie.’

“Dylan wants his day.”

On July 1, Binder will replace Harvie on the Metro board of directors while Kruger will also remain as one of two directors representing Delta. A replacement as Metro’s chair has not been decided.
