Rivers of Nihil have never fit neatly into a box, but with 2018's Where Owls Know My Name , they transcended all labels applied to them. Returning in 2021 with The Work , they forged further into new territory, once again upending any expectations fans had placed on them. And now, with a new series of singles recorded in early 2023 that will be released in the coming months and eventually appear together on an album, the band has once again shattered the ceiling of how far they are willing to go in search of new sonic terrain.

The Reading, Pennsylvania-based progressive death metalers spent 2021 and 2022 burning the candle at both ends with a frenzied tour schedule including headline runs of the U.S. and Europe, a jaunt on the European festival circuit and two runs in support of The Black Dahlia Murder and The Contortionist in North America. But once the latter tour wrapped up, they were short a band member.

For personal reasons, founding member and lead vocalist Jake Dieffenbach and the band went their separate ways. The split took place just three days after the recording of a live video and audio session for Audiotree 's new ' From Nothing ' series, which was released on April 20, 2023. And while initially the band wasn't sure how to approach the release with the departure of a founding member and lead singer - or whether to release it at all - they decided to move forward with it to honor Dieffenbach's contributions to the group over the years and mark the beginning of a new chapter.

In March 2023, Rivers of Nihil wrapped up a recording session that saw the now four-piece band birth a considerable amount of new music featuring their previous bassist/backup vocalist Adam Biggs as the new lead vocalist/bassist. This recording session also marked the first appearance of new guitarist Andy Thomas (ex- Black Crown Initiate ), whose vocals also play prominently in the music, as a member of Rivers of Nihil . These new singles are the first to showcase the band's new lineup in full-on collaboration, and demonstrates that while this is a new, brave sound with tons of potential, it also carries the band's classic energy.

The prog elements that made Rivers of Nihil stand out from the death metal scene were there, but not to the same extent. The clean vocals were a bit off point or just sampled, the riffs sounded a bit more rough and the presence was that of a classic death band. However, they played their last album very well and sometimes engaged with the public. The sax player was actually the one hyping the crowd the most.

Fucking bonkers. Any of these bands (Rank and Vile, Wolf King, Conjurer, Entheos, Rivers of Nihil) are worth going to see live. One of the best concerts I've ever been too.

The show was AWESOME ''''. I've never seen the band before but great great show. All the bands went above and beyond anything i could believe. I'll definitely be seeing them again. Wolf King, Conjurer & Entheos were really good. Starting band Rank and Vile got everything for the evening. Awesome, Awesome.

Rivers of Nihil Book Spring 2022 U.S. Headlining Tour With Fallujah + More

Rivers of Nihil will get to work supporting their latest album, The Work , this spring. The band has announced a spring headline tour that will include support from Fallujah , Alluvial and Warforged.

The trek gets underway May 6 in Brooklyn, New York with dates booked through June 5 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It should also be noted the Hypocrisy, The Zenith Passage and Burial in the Sky will join the bill for select dates on the run. Check the itinerary at the bottom of this post to see which shows the three acts will be playing.

Rivers of Nihil released The Work album last fall, and will now have a chance to bring such metal standouts as "Wait" and "Maybe One Day" to the concert stage. You can check out the album in full by picking it up here .

DISILLUSION was founded in 1994 and with each subsequent independent release, the band progressed in many ways and morphed into something much more. By the time their debut album “ Back To Times Of Splendor ” was released through Metal Blade Records in 2004, DISILLUSION were not only touring throughout Germany but also internationally with the likes of Amon Amarth and Impious .

Singer, main composer and founding member Andy Schmidt comments: “ 20 years, crazy, I’m so grateful for the huge impact this record had on so many people, fans, musicians, music lovers. And of course we never expected this. Thank You to everybody who supported us through all the years! Time to celebrate together on tour in spring .”

DISILLUSION ‘s long rich history has had many highlights, most recently being their last two albums “ The Liberation ” and “ Ayam ” charting in Germany, but “ Back To Times Of Splendor ” was an album that defined them as a band. It was a concept album of pure progressive death metal but still showed a huge range of emotion. From touching, almost fragile moments to brutal rhythmic outbursts – DISILLUSION melted all genre boundaries together and made an epic masterpiece which Metal Hammer Magazine heralded it as one of the best German metal albums of all time.

DISILLUSION will celebrate this milestone in 2024 by touring internationally, where they will perform “ Back To Times Of Splendor ” in its entirety. The first shows in Germany, Switzerland and Austria are on sale now with many more concerts and festivals to be announced soon.
