View of Manresa (Barcelona, Catalonia)

Manresa, in the interior of the province of Barcelona, is the capital of the region of Plà de Bages. Its city centre is located on a plain from which we can make out the rocky outlines of the Mountains of Montserrat Nature Reserve .

The houses of Manresa are arranged around the basilica of Santa María de la Seo. This structure combines both Romanesque and Renaissance elements, although its mainly a Gothic building.

The reredos are also medieval, and constitute important examples of Catalan-Gothic painting. In the historic quarter we find remarkable buildings such as the City Hall, the Palace of Justice, and Pont Vell . This bridge is associated with the worship of San Ignacio de Loyola in Manresa, as well as the architectural compound of Santa Cova . This sanctuary was the home of St. Ignacio de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, when he stayed in the city. As for Modernist architecture, Manresa has some beautiful buildings, such as the ones built by local architect Ignasi Oms i Ponsa . Some examples include the house of Torrents, the tower of Lluvià and the flour factory La Florinda. Catalan industrial architecture in this town includes many other factories.

Three bridges cross the Cardener River. The 14th-century basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu stands on a rock above the oldest bridge.

La Seu is the principal monument of Manresa. The church we can see today was designed by Berenguer de Montagut who also designed Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona. The architectural style is characteristic of Catalan Gothic. The work began in 1325, but the church was not finished until the end of the 15th century. The municipal museum is housed in the cloisters of the 17th-century church of Sant Ignasi. This church is part of the Sanctuary Cave of Saint Ignatius (in Catalan Cova de Sant Ignasi), built over a cave in which Saint Ignatius of Loyola is said to have prayed and meditated.

A Walk through the City Center [ edit ]

Strolling along Passeig de Pere III is a typical activity for newcomers to the city. This promenade features a central pedestrian island with rows of trees on either side. In the lower section, it is entirely pedestrian, and in summer, it is filled with terraces where locals and tourists alike enjoy refreshments at outdoor tables. Along this walk, you'll find the Casino, now transformed into a library, once the social venue for the city's upper bourgeoisie. Just a few meters away is the recently reconstructed Teatre Kursaal, hosting numerous theater plays and concerts. As you reach the lower part of the promenade, you'll encounter Teatre Conservatori, another significant hub for the city's theatrical life. A few meters away lies Plaça de St. Domènec, featuring two noteworthy buildings, Casa Torrents and the Jorba building. From this square, important and bustling streets like Carrer d'Àngel Guimerà, Born, and Nou emerge. In summer, during the Festa Major celebration, numerous exhibitions and concerts take place in this square.

Beautiful Manresa, the booming inland capital of Catalonia

Information

Manresa is 67 kilometres (just over 40 miles) from Barcelona and this city with an impressive series of monuments is often described as the inland capital of Catalonia. It has 76,000 inhabitants and is the main city in the Bages region. Manresa has enjoyed a great boom thanks to its thriving industrial activity (predominantly textile, metallurgy and chemical) and it spreads out over a rocky plain close to the Llobregat and Cardener rivers.

Its long history can be traced back to Pre-Roman times and today it can boast numerous monuments and tourist attractions. Highlights include hilltop cathedral La Seu, the bridge over the Cardener river and the architectural complex known as the Cova de Sant Ignasi [Cave of St Ignatius]. St Ignatius’ links to the city are one of its most important historical and cultural aspects —he lived in Manresa for a year before setting off on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Manresa is separated into two distinct areas: the old town where the city’s businesses are concentrated, and the large central boulevard in the modern area, a focus point for fun and leisure where local residents go to enjoy themselves.

What to see in Manresa

Manresa has many points of interest and below are details of a city route; La Seu, the cathedral, makes a natural starting point because it’s one of the most characteristic features of the old town. La Seu’s official name is the Col·legiata Basílica de Santa Maria and it was built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the top of Puigcardener  hill, which is cut off by the river flowing past below.

It’s an excellent example of the Catalan Gothic and La Seu has stained glass windows with an astonishing profusion of images and colours. It also contains a spectacular collection of sculptures; an image of Mare de Déu de l’Alba, the Virgin, stands above the altar, although this is actually a copy of the original polychrome wooden sculpture that was destroyed in 1979.

The impressive L’Esperit Sant altarpiece is the largest Gothic altarpiece conserved in Catalonia. And don’t miss several other fascinating altarpieces: Sant Marc (fourteenth century), Sant Miquel i Sant Nicolau (fifteenth century) and the Santíssima Trinitat (sixteenth century).  La Seu was built on top of an earlier Romanesque temple and the eleventh-century cloister still remains; it was designed by the same builder as the famous church of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona. The cathedral’s Museu Històric exhibits valuable liturgical objects, Romanesque sculptures and an important collection of Catalan Gothic paintings.

The sixteenth-century Palau de Justícia is next to La Seu; this building was originally constructed to be an episcopal palace however Manresa never obtained this diocese. And the Plaça Major is just moments away with its eye-catching eighteenth-century Town Hall.

The Cova de Sant Ignasi

Another major tourist attraction in Manresa is the Cova de Sant Ignasi or Holy Cave where Saint Ignatius Loyola withdrew to meditate and write his famous “Spiritual Exercises”. It’s on the bank of the Cardener river, just above the Romanesque bridge. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the original small grotto was transformed into a sumptuously decorated chapel and a spectacular Baroque church and convent were also built here later. Today it’s one of the most important sites related to St Ignatius and a universal reference point for the Jesuit world.

Anyone keen to learn more about the city’s history should head to the Museu Comarcal de Manresa where you’ll discover a splendid collection of Baroque art, medieval ceramics, local archaeological discoveries and contemporary works of art. The museum is housed in the old eighteenth-century Sant Ignasi school building.

Similarly to Terrassa, another of Catalonia’s important centres of industry, Manresa has an extensive catalogue of Modernist buildings that are a magnet for tourism . They are mainly located around Passeig de Pere III, one of the city’s busiest streets in terms of commercial and social activity. Here you’ll find an abundance of café terraces, restaurants and bars plus all the best-known shops. Some of the most unusual buildings are the Casino (1906), the Torre Lluvià (1908) and the Teatre Kursaal (1927). Plaça de Sant Domènech also has some Modernist structures including the Teatre Conservatori (1878), the Casa Torrents (1905) the Fuis i Palá kiosk (1917) and the spectacular Torre Jorba, a unique example of Art Deco in Catalonia.

What to do in Manresa

In addition to visiting the numerous monuments and tourist sites in the city centre, Manresa also has plenty of leisure activities to enjoy. The Parc de la Sèquia , located on the outskirts of the city, is one of its most important green spaces and here you can explore the Parc de l ’ Agulla and an artificial lake that was opened in 1974 and can hold 200 million litres of water. It was created to ensure that Manresa and other nearby towns have a constant water supply.

Various companies run activities in Parc de l’Agulla such as regulated fishing, kayak and canoe hire, a bar/restaurant, and a children’s playground plus further activities at the park’s interpretation centre.

This vast green expanse has areas set aside for children’s games, and you could also go for a fun bicycle ride, do sports or go hiking along a long straight route known as the Camì de la Sèquia, which is approximately 26 km long.

If you visit Manresa during its festa major (annual city festival) you’ll be treated to an amazing fireworks display.

Finally, to delight your taste buds, no visit to Manresa would be complete without trying a famous Catalan dish that originates from the city: bacallà a la manresana is made with cod and other ingredients including spinach, pine nuts and prunes.

Manresa, Spain: Cave of Saint Ignatius

About manresa and the cave of saint ignatius:.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola stopped here in 1522 on his way back from Montserrat.  While here he found solitude in this cave for a year…living the simple life of a beggar… and he sketched the fundamentals of his little book The Spiritual Exercises.

Cave of St. Igtnatius in Manresa, Spain

The Cave is a natural grotto facing Montserrat and over which the Church, the Jesuit Residence and the Centre of Spirituality are built. In the Cave there is an alabaster altarpiece (second half of the 17th century) that represents Saint Ignatius as penitent, with a pen in his hands and his look towards Montserrat. On the right several alabaster pictures in relief (18th century) can be seen and over one of them there are three crosses carved on the very rock where Ignatius prayed.

Before entering the Cave there is a vestibule, consisting in a spacious aisle designed by Marti Coronas, a Jesuit Brother, at the beginning of the 20th century. Four stained-glass windows in a Venetian mosaic style, bronze relief works, the mosaics and the ceiling are remarkable artistic elements. Two bronze Angels, by artist Llimona, symbolizing Saint Ignatius’ prayer and penance, are over the door of the cave. On the floor can be seen the Loyola house coat of arms, a cannon in remembrance of the Saint’s wound and a big sunflower a symbol of Ignatius’ heart open to Jesus.

You can attend daily Mass from Monday to Saturday at the Cave at 7.30 a.m. and Sundays and Holy Days at 12.00 noon.  Except for public holidays in Catalonia, which are : Easter Monday, May 1, June 24 (St. John), September 11, October 12, September 6, and December 26.

Confessions: Half an hour before the celebration of the Eucharist on Sundays or holy days of obligation.

Traveling with a group?  Groups can celebrate the Eucharist, in the Cave or the Sanctuary, by making a reservation in advance .

Málaga, Spain is a sun-seeker's paradise. The city along the nation's southern coast is the sunniest place in Europe , getting more than 280 sunshine hours a month, which works out to more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Málaga sits on the aptly named Costa del Sol, or the "sun coast," but this city has a lot more going for it than just the sun. It's also a cultural paradise and the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

"Málaga is a fantastic destination because it has a Mediterranean climate. Its winters are mild, and the summers are nice and warm. It has a sometimes-overlooked history rich in Roman history and Moorish influence. There are many cultural activities to do, such as the Picasso Museum and flamenco shows," Kristin Espinar, founder of Must See Spain , shared. And, as with the rest of Spain,  Espinar added, "Málaga has fantastic cuisine — especially fresh local seafood and tapas. Don't miss local chiringuitos , which are seaside seafood restaurants that locals flock to."

Ready to explore this fantastic city? Here's what you need to know about visiting Málaga, Spain.

Get a local perspective with a visit to La Victoria , one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Located just north of the city center at the foot of Mount Gibralfaro, this area is well-known for its beauty, traditional homes, local tapas bars, and street art.

The best time to visit Málaga is over the summer season. However, here, the summer extends from late spring into autumn (from May through October). This is when the weather is at its prime and when everyone is out and about enjoying all that fantastic sun. Travelers can also expect plenty of fun summer festivals too, including the Málaga Fair in August, a week-long party that honors all the best parts of Andalusian culture. That said, even if you can't come during the summer, there are plenty of other times worth a visit.

"The shoulder seasons are a great time to visit Málaga. I recommend traveling in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November)," Espinar said. "The temperatures will be mild, you’ll find smaller crowds, and you’ll have more energy for exploring the city and sights."

Rodley also advocates for the shoulder seasons in April and May and late September: "Visiting during the springtime, you can catch the gorgeous blossoms and flowering jacarandas of the parks and gardens while enjoying the moderate temperatures and fewer crowds when exploring the city and surrounding areas," Rodley explained. "Align your trip with Easter and you'll be able to experience the color, culture, and festivities of Holy Week parades. A visit in September is perfect for wine tours and sightseeing with fewer tourists. At this time of year, it may still be warm enough to enjoy the beach without having to contend for a space on the sand." And, as Espinar added, "If you choose to go in the winter (December to February), you’ll find the benefits of having milder and warmer weather than the rest of Spain. There will be fewer tourists and you’ll enjoy the city. Málaga also has stunning Christmas lights displays, which makes it a great December destination."

To visit this sunny destination, you can fly into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport , one of the largest airports in Spain. The airport offers plenty of direct flights to cities around Europe and connections to cities around the world via airlines like LATAM, Air France, Easy Jet, and Emirates. The airport is also just a few miles outside of the city center, making it a convenient jumping-off point.

Visitors coming from spots like Madrid and Barcelona may decide to drive — and that's a fantastic idea, as you can drive along the Mediterranean on the AP-7 for a scenic journey.

Travelers can also get to Málaga by taking the train to the María Zambrano station . Trains run regularly from Madrid; the trip takes about three hours and costs around $75.

Getting Around

Renting a car is a great option for those who want to get out and explore beyond the city's bounds and see more of the Costa del Sol region. Car rentals are available at the airport and numerous locations in the city with major operators like Avis, Budget, and Dollar Car Rental.

Málaga also has a robust public transit system that guests can take advantage of during their stay, including both buses and a metro line, which covers most of the city. Travelers can get a single ticket or travel passes, which are easy to recharge online . There are plentiful taxis and Ubers available throughout Málaga, too.
