horse pack trips in utah

Come and experience a horseback adventure through the largest, most beautiful national parks in the world!

Our destinations.

Zion, Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon, Paria, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

We know there is a little bit of cowboy in all of us. So saddle up with the rest of us for an unforgettable seven day horse ride vacation through some of the most beautiful and breathtaking landmarks in the world. Truly, mother natures best!

We will ride off the beaten path, to places you can go only by horseback. Our cowboys have been guiding riders for years and will lead you through the old trails used by cattle rustlers, Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid, and Texas Ranger Elijah Moore.

Along the way, you will be educated with land and outlaw history. You will see Indian petroglyphs and even ride into the Grand Canyon on the North Kaibab Trail.

You’ll be saying “I should have been a cowboy!”

Each Day Is a New Adventure!

Riding with Pete & Keela Magnum each day is a new adventure-completely different from the one before-specially planned to give you plenty of time in the saddle to explore and enjoy this incredible adventure. You will be intoxicated with the beauty of Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon national parks. Pristine slot canyons, sparkling creeks, historic rock formations, unbelievable sunsets--one look and you will know why these are world famous national parks. You will ride the wild and remote, often undiscovered country.

Imagine exploring the countryside with our cowboys by day, and riding into camp by night with a hot shower waiting (with all of the hot water you want!) Also, a scrumptious full-course dinner will await you, prepared by master chuckwagon chefs, Robert and Daylean Houston.

There will be live singing and entertainment from cowboys around the campfire, and all the stars in the sky you want to wish on. Our guides are people who want to see you smiling. They love the camaraderie of people and are there for your benefit and pleasure. They are sincere and committed to your service and safety. So, if you are interested in a first class horse ride vacation with beautiful scenery, sunsets, hot meals and, yes, even hot showers; or just have a craving for adventure and wide open spaces, then Cowboy Up to have the time of your life. You'll form friendships, visit national parks, eat great food, and who knows--maybe even become temporarily bowlegged.

The Red Rock Ride is the ride for you. It will provide an adventure by day and a relaxed, comfortable camp by night. So, dust off your cowboy boots and hat, and bring them along. This is a true western adventure that will send you home saying, "I should have been a cowboy!"

Safety Measures for Horse Riding

Horse riding is a thrilling and exciting activity, but it is not without its risks. As with any outdoor activity, it is important to take the necessary safety measures to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while horse riding in Utah:

Wear Protective Gear

Wearing the right protective gear is essential when horse riding. A properly fitting helmet is a must, and it should be worn at all times when on horseback. Additionally, consider wearing a torso-protecting safety vest to protect your vital organs in case of a fall.

Check Your Equipment

Before mounting your horse, it is important to check your equipment for signs of wear and weakness. Check your girth to make sure it is tight and secure, and inspect your stirrup leathers for any signs of cracking or fraying. Make sure that your saddle is properly fitted to your horse, and that all straps and buckles are in good condition.

Learn Emergency Maneuvers

In case of an emergency, it is important to know how to safely stop your horse. Learn how to do an emergency (one rein) stop, which involves pulling one rein sharply to the side to turn your horse in a tight circle. This maneuver can help you regain control of your horse in case of a runaway or other emergency.

Know Your Limits

It is important to know your limits when horse riding. If you are a beginner, stick to gentle trails and avoid steep or rocky terrain. If you are an experienced rider, be aware of your own abilities and do not take unnecessary risks.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

When horse riding, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for other riders, hikers, and wildlife, and be sure to announce your presence if you are approaching from behind. Stay on designated trails and do not venture off into unfamiliar territory.

By following these safety measures, you can help ensure that your horse riding experience in Utah is safe and enjoyable. Remember to always put safety first and to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitter

Scenic Horse Pack Trips

Scenic Horse Pack Trips

We offer guided scenic horse pack trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Outfitted with gentle horses and experienced guides, our guests venture into the vast, untouched wilderness of the Bob Marshall Complex for one of the great adventures the West has to offer. At the end of a 28-mile trail ride into the wilderness, our base camp awaits at the edge of a beautiful mountain stream and is just a short walk away from the legendary fishing opportunities of the South Fork of the Flathead River.

Scenic Horse Pack Trip Itinerary

The first day of the trip you will arrive at the Holland Lake Trailhead or Meadow Creek Trailhead, depending on where we are starting off the trip. Once we meet you, we will introduce you to your horse and get your saddle adjusted to your individual needs. We will show you a few tips on how to ride and direct your horse and try to have everyone on the trail by 8:30am. The ride into Holbrook basecamp is 25 miles from Meadow Creek Trailhead and 28 miles from Holland Lake Trailhead.

Once at camp you can cool down with fresh mountain spring water, enjoy some appetizers, read a book in the shade of the camp hammock, toss some horseshoes or get settled into your wall tent and then freshen up for a home cooked dinner around our long family-style table in the cook tent.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 309d

Wake up to fresh coffee and homemade breakfast. Then pack a lunch for your outing later that day. Take the second day to relax and rejuvenate close to camp, where you can fish the South Fork or White River easily within walking distance from camp, swim in many of the deep holes, or stretch out after the long ride in. Horses can be made available for you if you wish to fish further from camp or do one of the many side trips to see the awesome sights of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2f8c

The rest of the trip will be tailored to your interests and can include:

  • A spectacular day ride to the largest lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Big Salmon Lake, where you can fish, cool off, or even swim with our horses in the lake
  • An unforgettable ride up to view the Chinese Wall

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2f91

  • Day trip options to the top of various mountain peaks for spectacular views (Charlotte, Scar Face, Turtle Mountain, Rampart, etc.)
  • A day float on small one-person rafts that we can pack up river to the Bartlett Creek area and you can float and fish your way back to Holbrook
  • A day float from Holbrook down river to Big or Little Salmon creeks, where we would meet up with a horse and a pack animal to bring you back to camp

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2ff4

Back at camp we will serve you appetizers and a delicious dinner. After dinner you can sit around the campfire and listen to stories and play campfire games.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 316b

We have an early breakfast and pack up all of your gear and prepare for the ride back to the trailhead. We will be arriving at the trail head around mid-afternoon. We always love to see your pictures, so please send them to us so that we can share them on our sites.

Testimonials

When I was looking for a great trip and adventure for my 40th birthday, I knew that I wanted something special and unique. A Montana wilderness trip with my college buddies was something that I always dreamed about. 406 Wilderness Outfitters and the Cheff family created an awesome experience for my group in the Bob Marshall wilderness. The experience was a once in lifetime, some of the best views and landscapes that this country has to offer. 406 Wilderness Outfitters helped me check this off my bucket list.
What a fabulously memorable trip!!! My husband, two daughters ages 12 & 14 and I recently took a week long trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness with the assistance of 406 Wilderness Outfitters. As a family, we spend a fair share of time enjoying the outdoors of Montana. I can honestly say, this was the most memorable and seamless of all trips thanks to the unique and family- friendly service the Cheff’s provide.

Operating in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1932.

Horse pack trips and the Utah desert go together like World War II and the History Channel. Trails abound in and around Moab, most within a 45-minute drive, if not shorter, from downtown. Most can be found on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) territory with some national park access. Read More

Tours near Moab

There are several tour companies in the Moab area that offer guided trips on quarter horses. Others combine raft trips with one or two-night horse pack trips. If you arrive with your own stock you can choose from a variety of trails including Seven Mile Canyon, Pack Creek Trail, Red Rock Horse Trail, and others which snake through classic Old West landscapes, ranging from desert canyons to forested mountains.

Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park is ideally suited for exploring some of the park's more remote areas like the Maze and Orange Cliffs from a saddle. There are no commercial outfitters in the park, so you must transport your own stock. Due to limited water within Canyonlands you should contact the park at (435) 719-2313 for recommendations on where to ride. Keep in mind that backcountry permits are required and you must adhere to all regulations which includes the use of pelletized feed.

Horseback Riding in Arizona

Three park spectacular.

horse pack trips in utah

Photo Journey:

horse pack trips in utah

The Three Park Spectacular Ride is on the border between Utah and Arizona and covers three of the most famous national parks in the world. This horseback riding vacation in Arizona and Utah allows you to see parts of the country around the national parks which few tourists ever visit.

The ride begins in the Pariah River Canyon and winds north to skirt the corner of Bryce Canyon, giving an unusual perspective of the phenomenal pink spires and hoodoos. The trail follows the Virgin River, crosses the southeast corner of Zion’s maze of sandstone domes and twisting gorges, and heads south across vast open sagebrush country. Few trails have as dramatic an end as this one, at Toroweap where the chasm of the Grand Canyon falling three thousand feet below exposes eons of geologic time. The compact camp is moved each day by vehicle so that riders are not slowed down by pack horses and allowing a varied pace determined by the ever-changing terrain.

You will feel secure in the saddle on these reliable horses which are used to the rugged terrain and you will form a strong bond with your mount before the trip is over.  The air in this part of the world is crystal clear and the humidity is very low.  You will sleep well at night and have a keen appetite after a day in the saddle to help you appreciate the wholesome camp food.  Your experienced cowboy guides are thoroughly familiar with the flora and fauna of the area and help you understand the area’s unique ecology.  Your equine companions, the splendid, wild scenery and your rancher guides make this a superb adventure.

Take a look at other spectacular horseback riding vacations in Utah and Arizona.

Accommodations

This is a vehicle-supported camping trip. Spring bar canvas tents are utilized which comfortably fit two people and their gear. Mattresses and cots are provided to sleep on and you can either bring your own sleeping bag or rent one from the outfitter for $35 for the week. A portable toilet is provided at the campsite. Warm water is available for washing one’s hands and face in the morning and evening. A simple shower will be set up in camp when extra water is available to be trucked.

Meals & Drink

An assortment of home-cooked meals will be provided while on the trail. The cuisine is hearty and variable, prepared in an outdoor kitchen and over an open fire. Lunch is carried on a packhorse or in individual saddlebags and consists of sandwiches and snacks.

Ride & Horse Details

This is not a recommended option for non-riders.

Meeting Point

St. George, Utah

Trip Itinerary

Pickup in St George, Utah at 2:00pm and transfer to the first camp. This camp is located in the Pariah River Canyon near an old movie set where westerns were filmed.

Ride north through Red Rock Canyon. Take a break at an old wagon stop where the early pioneers wrote their names on the cliff face with axle grease. After a cold drink from Crack Springs, ride on to camp in the Sheep Creek Canyon.

Follow Willis Creek toward Bryce Canyon National Park. At some points, the canyon is only 6-10 feet wide. Leave the canyon behind, and follow the old ranger trail along the boundary of the National Park (horses are not allowed in the Park). The trail winds through stands of pinon pine and juniper. Camp in a small meadow with the pink cliffs of Bryce Canyon in the background.

Ride up onto the Bryce Plateau, where you can canter through meadows and stands of ponderosa pine. The trail continues to climb through aspen and fir forests to elevations of 9,500 ft where there are spectacular views. Ride down to meet up with the trucks and trailers and transport to the next camp along the Virgin River.

Ride along the Zion formation through deep sand and sagebrush, surrounded by white cliffs. Pass through Elephant Cove. In the late afternoon, transport the horses again across the flat lands of the Arizona Strip. Camp in a stand of ponderosa pines, which is like an oasis at the base of an extinct volcano known as Mt.Trumbell.

Ride through the forest to the top of Mt. Logan, from where you can see over a hundred miles in every direction. Previous riders have described this as “a place where you can look one day into the future and 5 days into the past.” Perhaps the best news of the day is that we will remain at the same camp for another night.

The last day of riding follows an old cattle trail, leading off the mountain and into Tuweep Valley. Take a last canter through the valley to Toroweep Point, an overlook of the Grand Canyon. This seldom-visited area is a spectacular location for viewing the most famous of all canyons. Here one has a sense of how the early Spanish explorers must have felt when they first rode to the edge and look into the chasm. Afternoon transfer for a 7.00pm arrival in St George, Utah.

Gila Wilderness Pack Trips

Gila wilderness horseback pack trip.

horse pack trips in utah

Take a ride back in time on a horseback pack trip into the magnificent Gila.

Raw, natural mountain beauty, Ancient Indian Dwellings, late 1800’s settler history in a Gila Wilderness pack trip reconnects you with the natural world. This experience renews and refreshes, which has a lasting, life-long impact.

The Gila Wilderness

The world’s first wilderness pack trip destination, created in 1924, is only accessible by foot or horseback. You can ride for weeks without seeing another person or any man-made structures. It’s the ultimate in beauty, magnificence and solitude.

Ancient Indian Cliff Dwellings

Explore fully preserved Indian Cliff Dwellings, dating back over 1000  years, some less preserved. The Dwellings are in a canyon few people visit. A remarkable, life-long memorable experience.

Middle Fork Canyon Riding

There is no better wilderness experience anywhere, than a horseback ride along the Middle Fork. Awe-inspiring at every turn, canyon walls tower over us, with splendid hoodoo columns rising up along every stretch. Continuous water flow offers a cool dip along the way - no better ride in America.

Settler Cabin Adventure

We take a remarkable journey to a late 1800 settler cabin, Prior Cabin, nested in a gentle meadow. The horses graze while we eat a healthy lunch. A most splendid experience, wondering about life in the Gila over 1000 years ago.

Elk and deer are abundant and thriving in the Gila, offering many excellent opportunities to see elk graze right along with our horses in camp, and along our riding journey.

Fishing the Native Gila Trout

Fish the most beautiful & difficult-to-find trout in American, the Native Gila Trout. Deep pools in scenic settings make this fishing adventure the best.

Camping in the Wilderness

Our remote and beautiful base camp is located on the canyon that is the birthplace of Geronimo. A comfortable camp offers wall tents, cots - everything to make your stay comfortable and warm.

Tasty Dutch Oven Cooking

What's the best way to top off an inspiring day of horseback riding?  A warm, delicious Dutch Oven Meal.
