Deck the halls: Cranford holiday house tour is back this Sunday

2 minute read.

holiday house tours in nj 2022

Full of an array of architectural styles, historically important buildings and structures dating back nearly three centuries, Cranford has long been an ideal spot for a leisurely drive.

And now, with the 31st annual Cranford Home for the Holidays House Tour — which is returning for the first time in three years due to COVID — those with a penchant for décor can see it all with a festive spin.

The self-guided tour of five homes is hosted by the Cranford Women’s Club. It takes place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4. Tickets are $30 per person and masks are optional.

Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite , or in person at Augusta Mae Boutique, 35 Alden St.; Hickory and Hill General Store, 21 North Ave. W; Periwinkles Fine Gifts,19 N. Union Ave.; or the Cranford Public Library, 224 Walnut Ave. Ticket sales will be limited on the day of the tour, so advance tickets are recommended.

Four of the homes, which date from the 18th century to the 21st century, will be decorated for the holidays, which visitors can tour while periodically meeting with guides who will share information about each home. A fifth home will serve as a hospitality house, where visitors can tour the first floor, and purchase baked goods and holiday ornaments.

“These homes are beautiful and the owners are happy to share some of the stories and histories of the homes,” said Kendall O’Brien, president of Cranford Women’s Club.

'Miracle on George': New Brunswick restaurants transform into Christmas pop-ups

One home, which sits on the banks of the Rahway River, was one of the first to be built in the town in the late 1700s. Another home, built in the early 20th century, is showcasing a vast collection of antiques.

The tour is never exactly the same. One home on this year’s tour was featured 20 years ago, while another was featured 15 years ago.

Proceeds are donated to various charities, including Project Home of Cranford, which assists those in danger of losing their homes; food pantry Cranford Family Care; and the Cranford First Aid Squad. Five $1,000 scholarships are also given to Cranford High School seniors.

Each year’s proceeds range from $5,000 to $10,000. The Cranford Home for the Holidays House Tour is the women’s club’s largest fundraiser.

The gift that keeps on giving: Perth Amboy's new e-gift card offers double dollars for spending at city businesses

Although pandemic concerns were eased last year, Cranford was heavily affected by Hurricane Ida, which led the club to postpone the tour once again.

“It didn’t seem appropriate to celebrate how some people could really decorate when others were still recovering from the hurricane,” O’Brien said. “Now it’s exciting because everyone is getting back into their normal routines and we can celebrate the great things about this town and give back.”

Hundreds of people attended the 46th annual Woodstown by Candlelight Tour Friday night.

The event featured tours of several historic buildings and homes decorated for the holidays, horse-drawn carriage rides, live musical performances, a live nativity, a “Letters to Santa” station, and photos with Santa himself on the caboose of a restored historic train.

This year, an open-air holiday market was added to the festivities, with more than 45 vendors and food trucks lining South Main Street.

Among the homes offering tours were The Wood House on South Main Street, a brick house which was originally built in 1757 by Jackanias Wood, and currently owned by Steve and Jody Digerness. Most of the original house was destroyed by fire but what remained was incorporated into its reconstruction and is still distinguishable due to the Flemish bond construction.

Also on the tour was the Woodstown Opera House, built by Edward Bilderback Humphreys, a merchant and real estate owner, with its opening night on Christmas evening in 1885. Since 2018 it has been home to Blue Moon Theatre. The Samuel Dickenson House on North Main Street, built in 1749, is one of the oldest homes in Woodstown, and is now home to the museum of the Pilesgrove-Woodstown Historical Society. The Eldridges Hill Schoolhouse, located behind the museum, was also open to the public during the event.

The First Baptist Church, built around 1826, hosted performances by pianist Andrew Valentine, the Woodstown High School Chamber Choir and Salem Oak Singers, among others. The Friends Meeting House — built in 1785 — hosted an art exhibit by the The Salem County Art League, as well as a performance by harpist Richmond Carlton.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Pilesgrove-Woodstown Historical Society .
