Derek Hough - Fall Tour 2023

Four-time EMMY® winner Derek Hough announced today the 2024 dates for his Derek Hough Symphony of Dance Tour.  The 26-city cross country tour resumes April 16 in Tampa (FL) and concludes on May 19 in San Diego with stops in cities such as Orlando, Richmond, San Antonio, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

From the mind of Derek Hough, Symphony of Dance is the first-national tour for the performing dynamo in four years following the sold-out successes of Derek Hough Live: The Tour, and Move Live on Tour and Move – Beyond – Live on Tour.  The show features high-energy choreography, stunning stage production, astounding versatility and Derek’s magnetic stage presence.  Fans will journey through a fusion of dance and music, as Derek explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa and hip-hop and everything in between.  Creative team and two-time EMMY® winners, Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, also known as NappyTabs (Jennifer Lopez’s ‘All I Have’, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, GRAMMYs® creative direction), co-create, direct and supervise choreography for the tour.

All tickets previously purchased for the original dates will remain valid for the rescheduled shows. Presales for new dates and on sales for rescheduled dates start 12pm local time on February 14, with general on sale for the new dates in most markets following on Friday, February 16, at 10am local at www.derekhough.com . • 12X Primetime Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Choreography
  • 3X Emmy Winner - Outstanding Choreography
  • 6X Dancing with the Stars Champion
  • NY Times Bestselling Author

Emmy Award winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Derek Hough started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, UT, at age 11. Just one year later, he moved to London to live and train with the top dance coaches in the world and attend the prestigious Italia Conti performing arts school where he studied theatre, music, and dance.

As a three-time Emmy Award winner and twelve-time nominee, Hough is the most nominated male choreographer in Television Academy history.  Hough has also appeared in film, television, and stage projects as an actor.  He made his feature film debut for director Duane Adler and producer Robert Cort in the feature film Make Your Move and had a recurring role on the ABC series Nashville and in High School Musical The Musical for Disney+ .  His stage performances include Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular co-starring alongside the Tony Award winning Laura Benanti and the critically acclaimed production of Footloose in which he starred as the male lead in London’s West End.  In December of 2016, Hough starred with Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Fierstein in NBC’s Hairspray Live!

In 2020, Hough joined the hit ABC series Dancing with the Stars as part of the judging panel alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Toniolo.  A multi-talented entertainer and the only six-time champion in franchise history, Hough had previously performed on the show as a pro-dancer.  His mirror ball wins came with celebrity partners that included Brooke Burke, Jennie Garth, Ricki Lake, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy and Bindi Irwin.

In May of 2017, Hough joined Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo at the judges table for the NBC series World of Dance .  The show, which he was part of for 4 seasons, launched as the highest rated summer show in over ten years and was unparalleled dance competition that featured solo artists competing against duos and crews in all genres of dance, including hip hop, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, and more competing for a million-dollar prize.

Hough can also add best-selling author to his list of credits.  His memoir Taking the Lead; Lessons from a Life in Motion  hit stands in August of 2014 and rapidly was named to the prestigious New York Times Best-Seller list during two non-consecutive time periods, a rare feat.

Hough completed his first solo national tour, Derek Hough Live: The Tour in 2019 during which he performed in nearly 60 cities around the country. Prior to that, Hough and his sister Julianne teamed for a live stage dance concert MOVE Live on Tour performing in 50 cities around the country, in 2015 they toured again selling out scores of venues on their 47-city outing.  In 2017 they again performed a sold-out tour of 48 cities around the United States with their show Move – Beyond – Live on Tour .

In 2021 and 2022, Hough headlined his residency Derek Hough: No Limit in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada.  The critically acclaimed dance-centric show at the Venetian Resort takes fans on a journey through a true fusion of dance and music, as Hough explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa, hip-hop and everything in between.

Derek Hough Sets Rescheduled Dance Tour Dates After Wife Hayley’s Medical Scare

It's unclear if Hayley will join the tour due to her ongoing recovery

Derek Hough  is returning on tour following his wife  Hayley Erbert 's medical scare.

The Symphony of Dance Tour in which Erbert joined Hough as a featured dancer was postponed after she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy in December 2023 .

Erbert underwent cranioplasty surgery later that month to "replace a large portion of her skull" that was removed during the emergency procedure. It's unclear if Hayley will join the tour due to her ongoing recovery.

Per a press release, the tour will pack back up on April 16 in Tampa, Florida, and conclude in San Diego on May 19. All tickets previously purchased for the original dates will remain valid for the rescheduled shows. Presales for new and rescheduled dates start at noon on Wednesday at Hough's website . General on-sale tickets for the new dates begin on Friday at 10 a.m.

Hough and Erbert tied the knot in an outdoor wedding in Monterey County, California, in August 2023.

"It's so interesting what a small sort of piece of metal can do to your whole persona and your whole outlook on everything, where all of a sudden it's sort of like, oh, I have this promise that I carry with me all the time. And to want to be a man to live up to that promise daily for that person and for yourself and for others, it's a powerful thing," Hough told PEOPLE about their wedding.

"It's a beautiful thing. So for me, I'm excited to continue to aspire to be that man each and every day for her, for our animals, and for our future family," he added.

Hough has been updating their fans about Erbert's recovery process through social media. Earlier this month, Erbert joined Hough for his latest update .

"Thank you all so much for all of your messages, your love, your energy, your light, your prayers. Thank you guys for all of it because it means so much to me and to us as a family. And genuinely, I believe it's what's gotten me through this a little bit faster and it's what helped me heal. It's what helped me stay positive throughout the entire experience," she told their fans in an Instagram video.

Standing at Concerts

Standing and Dancing at Concerts: DPAC is proud to welcome all types of concerts to our stage. Sometimes during the course of a concert performance, audience members will show their enthusiasm by standing and dancing, especially when encouraged by the performers to do so. Unless directed by the show, we do not ever enforce a must sit policy at concerts. For most concerts, this would not be acceptable to the performers on stage who often love it when the crowd is moved enough by the performance to stand. This is especially true for rock shows and for seats closest to the stage.

Please know that DPAC does not have a “no standing” policy and in most situations will allow guests to stand even if they block the view of the stage for other guests. If your view is ever blocked by a standing or dancing guest, please contact an usher and we’ll attempt to find alternative seating.

Derek Hough returns to SLC to dance up a TV special — and his wife is back on stage with him

U tah native Derek Hough is bringing his “Symphony of Dance” tour to Salt Lake City for the second time, and the big news is what won’t be different.

The performance — set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Eccles Theater, 131 S. Main, Salt Lake City — is the same show that last played to a sold-out Eccles Theater last October. And, to the surprise of many, Hough will once again be joined on stage by his wife, Haley Erbert Hough, just five months after she underwent emergency brain surgery.

“It’s been amazing, man,” Hough said in a phone interview with The Salt Lake Tribune “She’s doing fantastic. It’s incredible to see her progress.”

During a stop in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 6, the 29-year-old Erbert Hough became disoriented and was taken to a hospital. She was quickly taken into surgery, and a piece of her skull was removed so doctors could repair an intracranial hematoma — blood vessels that had burst inside her brain. She later needed followup surgery to repair her skull.

“It was unfathomable,” Hough said. “It just didn’t feel real. But it’s the new reality. We’re just focusing on what’s good. That’s it.”

And the news about Erbert Hough has been surprisingly good. In April, doctors cleared her to return to performing. She’ll be dancing when the tour returns to the Eccles on Wednesday.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the way her recovery has gone,” Hough said. “We’re very blessed.”

It’s not standard procedure for any sort of tour to return to a venue it’s already played. But Hough has reasons for the return — and it’s not just that this is his hometown, and the place where his father and many family members live. It’s also “the culture of dance” in Utah. “It’s a really great place to showcase this show,” he said.

His tour had to rebook dates because shows were canceled when his wife was hospitalized, “and I just said, ‘Hey, I’d love to go back to Salt Lake .’ And so we’re going back with the same show and we’re very excited about it.”

There will be something decidedly different than when the tour played the Eccles last October. This new date will be filmed for an upcoming TV special “so the audience is not just going to watch, they’re going to be a part of the show.” (When and on what platform the special will air has not been announced.)

“I was, like, ‘This is a theater to do it in.’ It’s so beautiful. The audiences are amazing. It’s my hometown. It’s a great, great place. So we’re very excited about it.”

He said performing in Utah is special to him. “Whenever I go there, it’s a reminder to me of where I came from, when I first went to dance.”

He remembers himself as “this kid from South Jordan, Utah,” who went to dance class in Orem “and then I moved to England at 12 years old and trained and competed all around the world and won competitions. And then doing television and doing Broadway and doing West End” shows in London. And Utah “definitely” remains “a place that makes me reflect a lot about my journey.”

Dance was not his dream, at least not to begin with. Like a lot of kids, he harbored notions of becoming a pro athlete or a rock star. “And it’s kind of funny, because I feel like I’m fulfilling both of those childhood dreams with dance,” Hough said. “I’m able to play music and sing on stage and rock out with the audience. But I’m also able to be a professional athlete, which is a dancer.”

Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls?

Hough has set aside tickets for family members for his Salt Lake City performance — and he set aside even more for a May 14 performance in Idaho Falls because, he said, “pretty much all of my family on my mom’s side lives there.” They told him there was a new arena in town and urged him to schedule a show there.

(That would be the Mountain America Center, which is home to the Spud Kings, a minor league hockey team.)

Hough called up his bookers and told them he wanted to schedule a show in Idaho Falls. Their response: “Oh, we’ve never really done that before.” But they scheduled it, and the show is close to a sell-out.

Which, apparently, came as a surprise to bookers who had never heard of Idaho Falls. “They know about it now,” Hough said with a laugh. “They’re, like, ‘Wow, this is a great market!’”

Just keep dancing

Hough is sort of a latter-day Fred Astaire — a dancer who became a star. Astaire kept dancing into his 70s, so how long does 38-year-old Hough think he can keep it going?

There’s no end in sight, said Hough, who feels “so fortunate” to live in a time when so much “health information is out there to create longevity. And I know for me, I’ve certainly added years to my career just based off of my habits I’ve created the past couple of years.”

That regimen includes “diet, body work, hyperbaric chambers, ice baths, IV treatments, supplements — all these different things to really change my bio age,” he said. “I’m 38 now, but my bio age is 30. … And you can actually bring that down. Wiithout getting too much into the science and all these different things, that’s the goal — to almost reverse your bio age and keep the longevity going.

“Who knows? I’ll do it as long as they’ll have me.”

Still ‘Dancing with the Stars’

Hough remains as enthusiastic about his judging gig on “Dancing With the Stars” as he is about dancing himself.

“It’s a show I love so much,” he said. “There’s a reason why it’s been around for so long. It always feels new and refreshed each season. And it’s a pleasure to be a part of it.”

He’s glad that the “experiment” of moving “DWTS” from ABC to streaming only on Disney+ resulted in the show airing on both platforms. “We’re very, very happy to be back on ABC and Disney+ networks.” he said.

And, as far as he’s concerned, Alfonso Ribeiro and Hough’s sister, Julianne, are doing a “phenomenal job” as the show’s hosts. “I think last year, we just felt very much like, ‘OK, we’re back to, like, the heart and feeling of what ‘Dancing with the Stars’ has always been.”

And he’s having “so much fun” on the show. “It’s such a blast. Being a part of it for 17 seasons as a pro, I understand how challenging it is. How difficult it is. But how rewarding and fulfilling it is. It’s wonderful to see these new dancers and new pros on the show and just the excitement and the energy and just, like, the bright-eyed-ness of it all.”

Although he’s been struck by the fact that ther show has been on the air since 2005, and that some of the new dancers were just children when he joined the show.

Hough’s first appearance was in 2007 , when he was just 21. He was a guest instructor for Julianne and Olympic speed skating gold medalist Apolo Anton Ono, the eventual winners of Season 4. Derek Hough became one of the main dancers in Season 5, and went on to win the mirror ball trophy six times — more than any other professional dancer, and twice as many anyone else.

Still, it’s a bit startling when he realizes that some of the new dancers “were, like, 5 years old” when he joined the series. “They grew up watching the show, and now they’re a part of it. It’s pretty incredible,” Hough said.

“And it cracks me up every time somebody says, ‘I used to watch you when I was a kid.’ I’m, like, ‘How old are you?’” he said, laughing.

Derek Hough, America’s ballroom ambassador, brings dance to Rady Shell on Sunday

Derek Hough at the Stifel Theater in St. Louis, Nov. 5, 2023.

Two weeks before Derek Hough’s “Symphony of Dance” tour was scheduled to arrive at San Diego’s The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in December, tragedy struck.

Hough’s wife and dance partner on the tour, Hayley Erbert, suffered a cranial hematoma during a live performance on Dec. 5 and underwent major brain surgery a few days later. The 60-city tour went on indefinite hiatus.

Fortunately, Erbert made a full recovery and is back dancing again — albeit with a pixie haircut as the result of her head being shaved for the craniotomy. The tour resumed April 14 and the postponed Rady Shell date will now take place this Sunday. Tickets are mostly sold out.

In an Instagram post on April 5, Erbert wrote of returning to the tour and dancing again: “What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months. My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more. I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority. I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special.”

After the “Symphony of Dance” launched last September, Hough spoke with the New York Times about the ambitious project. Here are excerpts from that interview, which took place before Erbert’s injury.

In one week (last fall), Derek Hough visited five states as part of his 60-city concert tour “Symphony of Dance.”

After a show in Cincinnati, and a post-show ice bath, he flew to Los Angeles for 48 hours to appear on Jennifer Hudson’s talk show, rehearse a coming Disney holiday special and film an episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” the hit television ballroom and Latin dance competition that helped start his career 16 years ago. Then he flew to Michigan for the next show.

“I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment,” Hough said with a laugh during a video interview from Minneapolis. “I love the real-time interaction with audiences, where they see you on TV and then the next day, you’re in front of them live.”

Since his 2007 debut on “Stars” as a “pro” — a professional dance partner to an eclectic roster of celebrities with varying degrees of dance talent — audiences have had ample opportunity to see Hough on both screen and stage.

Derek Hough performs in his "Symphony of Dance" tour.

In addition to “Stars,” he appeared in Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular; on TV shows like “Nashville,” “High School Musical” and “Hairspray Live!”; and as a judge on Jennifer Lopez’s dance competition series, “World of Dance.”

That exposure has made Hough, 38, one of the country’s most visible dancers, and the rare performer who could headline a nationwide dance-centric tour that has sold out shows on both coasts and in the Midwest.

“He reminds me of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, the triple threats,” veteran choreographer Bruno Tonioli, a “Stars” judge, said, referring to dancers who sing and act as well. “What he does always has that universal appeal.”

Hough’s popularity reflects the unlikely and enduring success of “Stars,” now in its 32nd season. Part of the show’s allure is its approachability.

“Ballroom is one of the most accessible and relatable forms of dance for mass audiences,” said Conrad Green, an executive producer who is now the showrunner for “Stars.”

There was little mainstream representation of ballroom dance when Hough was a bullied child growing up outside Salt Lake City with four sisters.

He knew nothing of Kelly and Astaire but adored Michael Jackson. But there was a family connection to ballroom: His parents met on a college ballroom dance team. Hough’s mother enrolled him in dance classes “to keep me busy,” he said, which he resisted until he realized it meant he got to be with girls. And he soon became intrigued by ballroom’s ethos of partnership.

“There was something about the working together part that was really cool,” he said. “There was this interaction that’s deeper than just learning a routine by yourself.”

Ballroom competitions also allowed him to travel, so dance became “this vehicle to explore,” he said.

At first, that just meant Utah and neighboring states. That changed when he was 12. Derek and his sister Julianne had caught the attention of the internationally renowned ballroom champions Shirley and Corky Ballas, who frequently visited the dance studio where the siblings trained. When the Houghs’ parents split and home became a tumultuous place, the Ballases invited Derek and Julianne to live and train with them in London.

“I was just fascinated by this gift that this boy had,” said Shirley Ballas, now a judge on the British show “Strictly Come Dancing.”

But she also recognized what was lacking. “He just needed to learn discipline and the art of how to put it all together,” she said.

Bryan Birks for The New York Times

In England, Hough trained in many styles of dance as well as acting and singing. But it was the competitive ballroom dance scene that grabbed him.

“I became obsessed,” he said, and spent hours a day isolating his torso and hips, extending a leg, or articulating a foot. He fixated on competitions. He recalled thinking: “‘How do I win? How do I get better?’”

He won a lot. Hough stayed in London for a decade pursuing opportunities, which included starring in “Footloose” in the West End in 2006.

Back in the United States, Julianne had entered the world of “Stars” and recruited him as a backup dancer on a live tour, which led to a guest appearance on the show, then an offer to join as a pro. He declined.

“In the ballroom community, we at first kind of snubbed it,” he said of “Stars.” “We were like, ‘This isn’t a good representation of our world.’ ”

But after watching his sister thrive on the show, he decided to give it a shot, appreciating its reach. When Hough arrived, in the fifth season, it was clear to Green that he was particularly well suited to the show.

“You have to be a charismatic performer, choreograph well and teach well,” Green said. “It helps if you have knowledge beyond ballroom and Latin dance. On all of those metrics, Derek was really good.”

Hough is a six-time “Stars” champion and three-time Emmy winner for his “Stars” choreography. Since 2020 he has been a judge on the show. As a pro, he was lauded as a supportive and savvy instructor.

As the Hough siblings’ profiles grew, Derek pitched an independent tour to producers — “a rock concert for dance.” He was rejected. And rejected again.

But the Houghs eventually found support and cobbled together a show whose popularity became their proof of concept. From 2014-17, they headlined three national tours.

“Symphony of Dance” is Hough’s second tour without his sister. It’s also his first self-funded tour and the first to co-star his new wife, Hayley Erbert, who has danced with him for nearly a decade, appears regularly on “Stars” and competed on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The 90-minute revue, which features a live band and six ensemble dancers, is rooted in ballroom and Latin dance but also includes tap, hip-hop and contemporary works.

Music is Hough’s starting point (he used to be in a band), and he likened the development of the show to “creating an album.” The show’s soundtrack, some of which he sings, features a broad spectrum, including pop, rock and jazz standards with bespoke orchestrations.

Whereas in previous shows, Hough says, he leaned on more commercial music, he called “Symphony” “a much more theatrical show” that “allows space for the dancing to speak for itself.”

Hough credits “Stars” with creating a production template and knowledgeable audience for his shows. He also readily admits to emulating its flashy aesthetic, which is reflective of ballroom dance culture, if not always a part of it he embraced.

“I grew up covered in rhinestones,” he said, but turned away from the sparkle as his career progressed. Now, with “Symphony,” he’s embracing those roots, bedazzling his set and costumes. “I missed all the shiny stuff,” he said.

In addition to Hough’s choreography, “Symphony” includes contributions from 10 other dance makers.

“They create things that I would never even think about, or do movements that aren’t in my vocabulary,” Hough said.

If the element of partnership attracted Hough to ballroom dance in the first place, the group effort of this tour also reflects a further evolution in his approach.

“In the world where I grew up, everything was competition,” he said. “We were always like, ‘I am against you, I’m here to beat you.’ It was a very selfish world.”

Now, he said, his goal is to “bring everybody into the mix. Like, ‘I want to learn from you.’ ”

Entertaining an audience, whether live or on-screen, remains his motivating force. He noted a period of burnout in his professional life when “I didn’t want it anymore.” But then he began to see his “crazy schedule” of TV and touring as an artistic offering, rather than a burden.

“All of a sudden,” he said, “that empty tank just went to full.”

Of the many quotations and slogans that flitter through Francis Ford Coppola’s idea-stuffed, open-hearted, unabashedly optimistic “Megalopolis,” one that particularly resonates with the director is: “When we leap into the unknown, we prove that we’re free.”

Derek Hough’s ‘Symphony of Dance’ Tour Announces Significant Changes

Andrew Portugal

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Derek Hough has sent shockwaves through his fanbase with unexpected changes to the highly anticipated Symphony of Dance tour. Originally scheduled to kick off in September 2023, the tour’s dates have been shuffled around. Due to the nature of the changes, fans have been speculating the reason.

Derek Hough’s Symphony of Dance Tour Changes Dates

This national tour, featuring the Emmy Award-winning choreographer and dancer Hough , promised to be a spectacular showcase of dance and music. With high-energy choreography, stunning stage production, and an array of dance styles, it was going to be a must-see event.

The initial tour schedule, as revealed in the original poster, listed a series of dates starting from September 28, 2023, in Las Vegas, NV, and concluding on December 23, 2023, in Idaho Falls, ID. Fans were gearing up for a journey through various cities, eagerly marking their calendars with these dates.

However, in a recent Instagram story post, Hough shared the original tour poster with a significant update, some of the dates are now different. If you have tickets to this event, be sure to confirm the show’s date ahead of the event.

The caption read, “We’ve made a few changes!” This sudden alteration took fans by surprise and led to intense speculation about the reasons behind it.

Fans ignited discussions on Reddit. User CoffeeAndCurls76 started a thread speculating that the changes might be related to the scheduling of Dancing With The Stars Season 32, which could be moving to Tuesdays. This speculation was rooted in the observation that many of the tour dates that were previously on Tuesdays had been shifted to Mondays.

Derek Hough Shares Photos of His Honeymoon With Hayley Erbert

In addition to his tour date changes, the celebrated dancer and choreographer has also given fans a glimpse into a different kind of adventure, his romantic honeymoon with Hayley Erbert. The couple, who tied the knot on August 29 in Monterey County, California, is now having the time of their lives in the picturesque hills of Tuscany, Italy.

On Tuesday, Hough, 38, took to Instagram to then share a video montage of their honeymoon escapades. The video captures the essence of their love-filled journey, showing the couple’s exploration of Tuscany’s scenic countryside, visits to vineyards, culinary delights, and, of course, moments of dancing and kissing in the idyllic Italian landscape.

This honeymoon getaway comes after the couple’s enchanting wedding ceremony, where they exchanged vows in the presence of 106 guests, officiated by Hough’s brother-in-law. The newlyweds embarked on their Italian adventure, also exploring a range of breathtaking locations, including Lake Como, Positano, the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Tuscany, Florence, and more.

Olivia rodrigo's top pops off during wardrobe malfunction at concert, olivia rodrigo leather top busts open mid-song ... wardrobe malfunction.

Olivia Rodrigo handled a disastrous wardrobe malfunction like a pro ... not missing a beat as her top came undone during her London concert, and keeping the damn thing in place.

The singer took the stage at The O2 Arena Tuesday as part of her world tour -- and during a vigorous performance of her hit, "Love Is Embarrassing" ... Olivia's upper-body garment broke open ... forcing the former Disney Channel star to hold it in place.

Still, Olivia kept it together ... continuing on with the performance while motioning to her nearby dancer to fix the busted bustier. While they weren't able to get it fixed on the spot, Olivia didn't cut the song early ... only venturing offstage for help once the track wrapped.

In other words ... she powered through the song with her top loose, which is impressive.

Olivia has yet to address the onstage hiccup ... but we're sure she isn't sweating it, especially since fans are applauding her for her professionalism.

Perhaps a costume shakeup is in order before Olivia takes the stage again ... she has 3 more dates in London before a break ahead of her concerts in Belgium -- and if she can figure out what's wrong with her wardrobe, that'd certainly help avoid this down the road.

Otherwise ... hold on tight??? 😅
