Generally, St Thomas or St Croix will be best for a Caribbean vacation with kids, and St John is better for couples or a quick day trip with the family.
Things to Do in the Virgin Islands on Family Vacation
The Virgin Islands are a popular vacation destination for families , and there are plenty of things to do to keep everyone entertained.
One favorite family-friendly activity is swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. Another popular option is exploring the island by hiking or biking on one of the many trails.
For those interested in history, the Virgin Islands is rich with old pirate stories, Danish battles, and, old ruins and petroglyphs around the trails.
There are also plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining, making the Virgin Islands a great place for everyone in the family.
Family Activities in St Thomas
Below are all of my favorite family activities on St. Thomas. You can easily spend a week or more just exploring here!
Coral World Ocean Park
👉 This tour gets you both tickets to the park and Coki Beach admission!
Coral World Ocean Park is located at Coki Point, next to the famous Coki Beach .
It’s an educational and interactive marine park that offers something for everyone. The park has a variety of exhibits, including a coral reef aquarium, a touch pool, and a shark tank.
The park also offers many educational programs, such as coral reef conservation lectures and coral reef planting seminars.
In addition, Coral World has a gift shop and a restaurant, making it the perfect place to spend a day with the family.
Kayak Cas Cay and the Mangrove Lagoon
👉 This Cas Cay excursion has a perfect five-star rating!
Although the Virgin Islands are generally known for the main territories and largest islands of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) and British Virgin Islands (BVI), there are tons of cays (pronounced keys) and smaller islands off the coast of each territory.
One of the most popular ones is Cas Cay. This is a great family trip if you want to learn about the marine habitats around the USVI, snorkel in some of the hidden gems off the coast of St Thomas, and even enjoy a little hiking.
Pirates Treasure Museum
This unique museum features buried treasures and shipwrecks from the Virgin Islands and beyond!
With exhibits featuring deep-sea technology, ancient artifacts, shipwrecks from around the world , and more, you’re sure to fill a chunk of your day enjoying the undersea treasures of the Pirate Treasure Museum.
Adults are $16, children $12, and under 6 years old are free!
99 Steps to Blackbeard’s Castle
Spend the day in downtown Charlotte Amalie climbing the historic 99 steps to Blackbeard’s Castle.
Note : Blackbeard’s Castle Museum and tours are currently closed due to damage from the hurricane, but you can still make the walk up the steps and see the old pirate estate!
You’ll find an awesome overlook at the top of the steps, great for family photos or relaxing after a long day of shopping in Charlotte Amalie, at the bottom of the steps!
Beach Hop Around St Thomas
There’s no better way to tire the kids out than with a day of fun in the sun! St Thomas is known for some of the most fun and lively beaches in the USVI.
Coki Beach is great for watersports, Secret Harbour Beach has an awesome double reef off-shore for snorkeling, and Sapphire Beach is the perfect spot to end the day for sunset views and dining.

Fort Christian
Fort Christian once served as a fort for the Danish King, and then the police headquarters for USVI.
Fort Christian is now a historic landmark in the process of being restored, and is open for you to explore its exhibits dating all the way back to the stone age!
Really, these are just the beginning of all the things to do with kids in St Thomas!
Family Activities in St John
St John is an amazing island to visit, especially for beaches. Here are my favorite things to do on St John, USVI!
Snorkel and Hop Around St John Beaches
The Virgin Islands are well known for their pristine beaches and clear waters. St John, in particular, is a great spot for snorkeling with the family!
Many of the beaches in St John are secluded. If you’re looking for a quiet place to let the kids run around and splash in the water, St John is a great option.
Some of the most popular beaches in St John are Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, and the very popular Honeymoon Beach! The options are endless when exploring the coasts of St John.
👉 Visit St. John on a day trip from St. Thomas to enjoy snorkeling more easily than dealing with the ferry!
Hike the Reef Bay Trail to the Sugar Mill Ruins and Petroglyphs
👉 This half-day trip to St. John includes the Sugar Mill ruins and several other can’t-miss spots on the island!
As one of the most popular trails on the island, you can’t miss the Reef Bay Trail to the historic Sugar Mill Ruins and ancient Petroglyphs of St John.
The Reef Bay Trail branches off to many of the popular hikes in the Virgin Islands National Park, so you can choose how strenuous or long you want your hiking adventure to last.
Searching for the ruins and petroglyphs makes for a great family scavenger hunt!
Check Out Virgin Islands National Park
Much of St John is in the Virgin Islands National Park. This means a lot of the land is untouched by tourism and development!
Virgin Islands National Park is filled with hiking trails , picnic spots, and off-the-beaten-path beaches to explore.
Family Activities in St Croix
St Croix is a bit less developed than St Thomas or St John but that makes it more exciting to visit! Here are my favorite things to do on St Croix!
Excursion to Buck Island Reef National Monument
👉 This catamaran tour to Buck Island and Turtle Beach is fun for the whole family!
Buck Island Reef National Monument is home to a protected coral reef with some of the best snorkeling on the island!
These excursions will likely take up a full day as you hop on a catamaran to go out of the coral reef.
You’ll stop at Buck Island and spend some time on Turtle Beach, frequently voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!
Explore Christiansted
Christiansted is the capital of the United States Virgin Islands, located on the east side of St Croix.
The city is a great place to explore with the family, as there are plenty of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained.
Christiansted is home to a number of historical sites, including Fort Christiansvaern, an 18th-century fort that now houses a museum; the Christiansted National Historic Site, which includes several restored 18th and 19th-century buildings; and the Buccaneer Hotel, the first hotel to operate on St Croix.
There are also several beaches near Christiansted, where you can enjoy swimming, picnics, and snorkeling!
Play All Day at Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach is one of the most lively, popular beaches on St Croix. Its calm, clear waters make it perfect for water sports and aquatic activities during the day, and its west-facing location makes it perfect for sunset viewing.
There’s also a beach bar and restaurant, Rhythms, right at the beach, where you’ll find food and drinks for the whole family!
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge
The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is known for its turtle recovery program, which helps provide nesting and safety for the sea turtles of St Croix.
They offer many education programs for hands-on learning with the US Fish and Wildlife Service .
Best Time to Go to the Virgin Islands
The best time to go to the Virgin Islands is between December and April.
💦 Hurricane (or rainy) season in the Virgin Islands runs from the beginning of June to the end of November. 💦
If you’re on a budget, prices drop around the rainy season. Hurricanes are tracked regularly in the islands.
As long as there’s no hurricane threat, and you’re okay with daily passing showers, you can try it out during the rainy season.
However, if you’re looking to do family excursions, there’s a higher likelihood of cancellations due to rain.

How to Get Around USVI with the Family
Rental cars and taxis are the best way to get around the Virgin Islands.
Renting a Car in USVI
I would suggest renting a car to get around the Virgin Islands with a family.
It’s important to note that taxis generally charge per person in USVI. So, traveling with a family might end up being considerably costly.
The cost of rental cars in USVI will vary based on the island and time of year, but expect to pay between $50-$100/day for a basic rental car!
Four-wheel drive may come in handy if you want to head to some of the off-the-beaten-path beaches and hikes around the islands.
👉 I recommend using Discover Cars for renting a car on your trip!

This Stunning Caribbean Island Is Easy to Reach From the East Coast — and It Has Beautiful Beaches and World-class Snorkeling
Here's what you need to know about visiting St. Thomas.
Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.
The easiest of the U.S. Virgin Islands to reach, St. Thomas is both the gateway to St. John and St. Croix and a beloved vacation destination in its own right. Tourists primarily flock to this popular Caribbean paradise for its beautiful beaches and world-class snorkeling. It's also steeped in maritime history and pirate legends, which make for some interesting attractions.
The frequency of international travelers has left a mark over the years. As a result, St. Thomas exudes a cosmopolitan atmosphere, especially in the bustling capital of Charlotte Amalie, which is brimming with Danish colonial architecture, duty-free shops, and cultural landmarks.
A busy port for cruise ships, the island swells when big boats dock. Given St. Thomas is only 32 square miles, you can see many major sights and relish some beach time all in a few hours. However, many people prefer to spend a couple of days or more on the island to cover more sun-soaked ground and splash in the turquoise tides.
Getting to St. Thomas
St. Thomas is the most accessible of the U.S. Virgin Islands. American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, and United all operate direct flights from major East Coast airports, including New York, Boston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. From takeoff to landing, it's only about four hours (of course, this varies slightly depending on the departure point). Upping the convenience factor even more? Americans get to enjoy the ease of domestic travel — online check-in and not needing a passport — as the island is an unincorporated U.S. territory. St. Thomas is also easy to reach via plane or boat from other Caribbean destinations , making it a requisite stop on any island-hopping holiday.
Best Things to Do on St. Thomas
St. Thomas has a treasure trove of sandy stretches with dozens of beautiful beaches. Postcard-worthy and popular Magens Bay on the north coast is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Those wanting to avoid the crowds will find quiet places like Lindquist Beach, part of the 21-acre protected Smith Bay Park, situated on the island's eastern end.
With some of the clearest water in the world and tons of tropical fish, it's no surprise that snorkeling is one of the main draws here. Families especially love the calm bays that make swimming and exploring fun and safe for kiddos. Some of the top spots to see magnificent marine life include Coki Point Beach, Secret Harbour, and Brewers Bay. It's also highly recommended to join a boat excursion to Honeymoon Beach on lesser-known Water Island.
Charlotte Amalie is a vibrant hub for shopping, entertainment, and history. There are more than 100 duty-free stores, including many jewelers. (Some travelers even report bringing an extra suitcase dedicated to carrying back souvenirs.)
Keen on learning a bit more about the island's past? Check out the eye-catching 17th-century Fort Christian, which showcases a central clock tower and on-site museum. St. Thomas is also home to the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The Pirates Treasure Museum brings the legends and lore of deep-sea escapades to life through interactive exhibits.
For a workout and superb panoramas, climb the 99 Steps. Colloquially referred to as "step-street," it's a staircase built from bricks brought over by 18th-century Danish ships. Another high-altitude must, the Skyride aerial tram climbs 700 feet above Charlotte Amalie to Paradise Point.
Budding botanists of all ages should take a trip to Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden , while art fans won't want to pass up the chance to visit the childhood home of French impressionist Camille Pissarro. Nightlife enthusiasts can hit the lively beach bars and clubs.
Best St. Thomas Hotels and Resorts
Marriott's frenchman's cove.
Perfect for family vacations and group getaways, Marriott's Frenchman's Cove features spacious villas with two or three bedrooms, living and dining areas, fully equipped kitchens, and patios. The hillside property also treats guests to ample amenities — including an infinity pool with a waterslide — and activities, as well as gorgeous vistas of Pacquereau Bay.
Secret Harbour Beach Resort
Located on the quieter east end of St. Thomas, Secret Harbour Beach Resort is a favorite among families and couples looking for a relaxed escape that doesn't skimp on fun outdoorsy activities. Besides snorkeling, scuba diving, and tennis, guests rave about the renovated condo-style units that are just steps from the sand.
The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas
A luxury resort that very much caters to families, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas sits on a beautiful sandy beach and has a slew of kid- and parent-approved amenities, ranging from a top-notch kids' club to a pool with a waterslide. There are four restaurants, 180 revamped guest rooms, and the famous sunset catamaran cruises.
At Home in the Tropics
For a boutique stay with a central location, At Home in the Tropics provides a laid-back vibe that feels more grown-up than many of the area's larger resorts. Housed in a lovely historic Danish building overlooking the harbor, the bed-and-breakfast offers a pool, four coastal-inspired guest rooms, and equally breezy common spaces.
Best St. Thomas Restaurants
Pangea terra table.
Pangea Terra Table focuses on farm-to-fork fare made with seasonal organic ingredients served in a lovely alfresco setting with a lively bar. Beyond the delicious food, the restaurant's sustainability initiatives — which include an on-site garden, using zero plastic, and composting — are admirable.
Heidi's Honeymoon Grill
The perfect spot for a leisurely lunch on Water Island, Heidi's Honeymoon Grill serves flavorful fish tacos and strong rum cocktails to day-trippers. Grab a shaded table on the deck and soak in the sparkling views until your food arrives.
Prime at Paradise Point
Craving a fancier dinner — perhaps one that involves leaving the kids with a babysitter back at the hotel? Prime at Paradise Point is a special-occasion-worthy choice, with indulgent dishes like local lobster, tomahawk steak, and truffle mac and cheese.
Side Street Pub
Hungry shoppers who need to refuel between duty-free purchases can head to Side Street Pub for slow-cooked pulled pork tacos, homemade salsa, and Caribbean chicken sandwiches. It's a family-owned hidden gem in Charlotte Amalie, with friendly service that's well worth the effort to find.

This resort is one to check out in a great location and proximal to the pristine, white-sanded Morningstar Beach.

The location gives you access to three freshwater pools, a poolside jacuzzi, a resort shuttle, onsite dining and drinks, and even a Kid’s Club.
Of course, the secluded beach access is a huge perk when it comes to this all-inclusive resort. Water Bay is shallow and perfect for swimmers of all ages; it’s also home to many exotic fish species that you can appreciate while snorkeling or swimming.
You’ll also have access to onsite tennis and basketball courts, a miniature golf course, an onsite shopping boutique, and a watersports complex. You may never find a reason to go off-site, but a virtual concierge service is available around the clock if you do.
The spa, spanning 10,000 square feet, is the real star of the show and an excellent way for parents to unwind and take advantage of their tropical vacation. If exercise is more your thing, then try out the fitness center.
Overall, Sugar Bay Resort and Spa is in a prime spot for access to St. Thomas and the neighboring island of St. John, with lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment options to suit the whole family.
But with so many options available onsite, it’s perfectly fine to spend your vacation enjoying the resort!
The Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort and Casino plan to shift to adult-only accommodations effective in February of 2022. Still, if you’re planning a spur-of-the-moment trip for the whole family before then, you can take advantage of this fantastic location.
With a beachfront pool as well as a secluded hillside pool, lots of food and drink options available onsite, watersports, a white-sand beach, and active adventure activities, this resort offers tons of amenities to make for an exciting and memorable trip.
For families with older children, indoor and outdoor bars, as well as the casino, can provide a great way to pass the time and relax.
This resort is on the island of St. Croix, which offers a range of fun activities and events that you can plan through the resort concierge. While English is the official language, you’ll find extensive French influence in the culture and architecture.
The island is also home to two unique bioluminescent bays, which illuminate with fluorescent blue light at night and are an unforgettable sight. Enjoy nature, take a diving trip or visit the easternmost point of the United States while staying here.

Of course, there are plenty of thrills to be had as well. Full watersport options and rentals are available, including snorkeling, jet skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more.
Onsite dry cleaning is available, and there is also a resort boutique, fitness center, and multiple dining options for every meal of the day. The beautiful pristine beach is the real star here, so take advantage of the swaying palms and divine surroundings and enjoy the surf and sand.
Another St. Croix resort, The Buccaneer , offers fabulous amenities, a lovely location, and access to an 18-hole golf course.
From the resort’s spot overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Christiansted Harbor, guests can enjoy three distinct, beautiful white-sand beaches. The luxury of the location also extends to the amenities, including two pools, eight tennis courts, a water sports center, a full-service salon and spa, a fitness center, three onsite eateries, and a shopping mall complete with luxury boutiques.
This elegant destination includes multiple packages that you can customize to cover the inclusive benefits you want to enjoy during your stay. The Buccaneer is family-owned and operated and keenly aims to provide a great, family-friendly environment.
The setting is country-club reminiscent and earned Forbes’ recognition as one of the best family resorts. As it stretches across 340 acres, there are plenty of activities to keep kids busy, including lots of hiking trails, beachside games like cornhole and ping pong, horseback riding and kayak tours, and swimming suited to all ages. Accommodations can vary based on your family’s needs, anywhere from a two-bedroom cottage suite to Luxury Beachside Dubloons.

What to Look for When Choosing a Family-Friendly Resort in the Virgin Islands
It can be overwhelming to plan a family vacation. To make it easier, here is a list of the most important things to consider when booking a hotel in the Virgin Islands.
The Virgin Islands are an idyllic tropical getaway that offers various atmospheres and activities. Choosing where to stay is the most important thing to consider when booking accommodation. Here is a brief summary of the main highlights of the Virgin Islands:
St. Thomas is the gateway island of the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Known for its beautiful beaches and snorkeling spots, it is also home to the capital, Charlotte Amalie, which is a bustling port city famous for its Danish colonial architecture, shopping, and historical sites.
Over half of St. John is covered by the Virgin Islands National Park, which preserves the natural beauty of the island with its forests, beaches, and coral reefs. It’s known for its hiking trails, like the Reef Bay Trail, and pristine beaches such as Trunk Bay, renowned for its underwater snorkeling trail.
The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix boasts a diverse landscape from lush tropical forests to desert-like areas. It has a rich cultural heritage, with influence from the Danish, West African, and Indigenous Carib peoples. Visitors can explore historical sites like the Christiansted and Frederiksted, rum distilleries, and beautiful beaches.
British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands are known for their stunning beauty and exclusivity. Islands like Virgin Gorda and Tortola offer luxurious resorts such as Long Bay Beach Club, which cater to families seeking a high-end, secluded getaway. The British Virgin Islands are perfect for sailing, exploring hidden coves, and enjoying world-class snorkeling and diving.
You can’t go far wrong when choosing where to stay on these stunning tropical islands – but it is still worth taking the time to consider which atmosphere appeals to you the most.
Kid-Friendly Amenities and Activities
Resorts featuring kids’ clubs can provide educational and entertaining experiences for your little ones, ensuring they’re happily engaged throughout your stay. For families with older children and teenagers, seek resorts offering adventurous activities such as water sports, hiking trails, and guided island tours.
These activities provide lots of opportunities for quality family time you will remember for life, but also introduce children to new experiences and cultures. Ensure the resort offers family-friendly pools, possibly with child-safe features and play areas, to ensure relaxation and fun for all ages.
Accommodation Options
Look for resorts providing various room configurations to suit your family’s needs, from spacious family villas and interconnected rooms to suites equipped with kitchenettes for easy meal preparation. The option of having separate sleeping areas for parents and children can make your stay more comfortable and relaxing.
Food Options
It can be difficult to find food that keeps everyone in your family happy. We recommend choosing a resort with a diverse range of dining options, from formal restaurants to casual beachside cafes, to ensure everyone finds something to their liking.
Kid-friendly menus, flexible dining hours, and the availability of all-inclusive or meal-plan options can simplify meal times, allowing more time for relaxation and family fun. If necessary, check for resorts that provide accommodations for dietary restrictions and preferences.
Safety and Convenience
When traveling with your family, finding a safe environment is a top priority. Resorts with private beaches offer a secure environment for children to play and explore. On-site medical services provide peace of mind, knowing that professional help is readily available if needed. The proximity of the resort to local attractions minimizes travel time, reducing stress and maximizing your vacation enjoyment.
Additional amenities, such as babysitting services and laundry facilities, can also make your trip go as smoothly as you deserve!
When deciding on accommodation in the Virgin Islands, carefully consider the preferred location, available activities, dining options, room types, and amenities to ensure a vacation that and suits your family’s needs.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are "America's Caribbean Paradise" – the place to see moko jumbies (stilt walkers) dance at a Carnival parade, hear the lilting patois of a Creole dialect or smell the spices in a saltfish pate (all without losing cell phone reception). You can visit either St. Thomas, St. John or St. Croix, or better yet, spend a little time on all three islands. That way you'll get plenty of pampering, undisturbed nature and colonial history jammed into one vacation.

The easiest way to get around is by ferry, which operates between the islands on a regular schedule. The ferries are reliable and affordable, and offer stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
When island-hopping, it’s important to plan ahead and check the ferry schedules, as they can change depending on the season and weather conditions. It’s also a good idea to pack sunscreen, as the sun can be intense on the open water.
Overall, the US Virgin Islands offer a unique and unforgettable vacation experience, with beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a rich cultural heritage. With these travel tips in mind, visitors can make the most of their trip and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Comparing with British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a neighboring set of islands to the US Virgin Islands, both located in the Caribbean Sea. While the US Virgin Islands are territories of the United States, the British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory.
One of the biggest differences between the two island groups is their size. The US Virgin Islands are larger and more populous, with a combined land area of around 346 square kilometers and a population of roughly 106,000 people. In contrast, the British Virgin Islands are smaller, with a land area of around 153 square kilometers and a population of around 30,000 people.
Another key difference is the level of development and tourism infrastructure. The US Virgin Islands have a more developed tourism industry, with a wider range of accommodations, restaurants, and activities available to visitors. The British Virgin Islands, on the other hand, have a more laid-back, low-key vibe, with fewer large resorts and more emphasis on sailing, snorkeling, and other outdoor activities.
Both island groups offer stunning natural beauty, with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and lush tropical vegetation. However, the US Virgin Islands have more diversity in terms of landscapes, with rugged hills and mountains as well as flat coastal areas. The British Virgin Islands are more uniformly hilly and mountainous, with fewer flat areas.
Overall, whether the US Virgin Islands or the British Virgin Islands are “better” depends on what type of experience a traveler is looking for. Those seeking a more developed, bustling vacation destination may prefer the US Virgin Islands, while those seeking a more laid-back, off-the-beaten-path experience may prefer the British Virgin Islands.
After exploring the unique features of each of the US Virgin Islands, it is clear that each island has its own charm and appeal. However, based on the criteria used in this article, St. John stands out as the best US Virgin Island.
St. John’s natural beauty, pristine beaches, and extensive hiking trails make it an ideal destination for nature lovers. The island’s commitment to preserving its natural resources through the establishment of the Virgin Islands National Park is also commendable.
In terms of accommodations, St. John offers a variety of options ranging from luxury resorts to cozy villas, ensuring that visitors can find lodging that suits their preferences and budget.
The island’s dining scene is also noteworthy, with a variety of restaurants offering fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients.
While St. John may not have as many shopping options as its neighboring islands, its focus on eco-tourism and sustainable practices make it a responsible and conscientious choice for travelers.
Overall, St. John’s combination of natural beauty, diverse accommodations, and commitment to sustainability make it the best US Virgin Island to visit.

- What is St. John known for?
- What is St. Croix know for?

Keep reading to find out which U.S. Virgin Island is best for you.
St. Thomas is Best for: Shopping, upscale dining, and nightlife
Popular with cruise ships, St. Thomas is the busiest and most commercialized of the three islands. It also has a reputation for being more upscale, with plenty of duty-free shopping, high-end dining, and golf. And, unlike the other islands, St. Thomas has a hopping nightlife scene after dark.
What to do on St. Thomas Island:
Board the St. Thomas Skyride and take it to a point 700 feet above the island’s capital of Charlotte Amalie for dramatic views of the Caribbean. Or, swim with sea lions at Coral World Ocean Park. You can also tour Bluebeard’s Castle, a Danish fortress built in 1689; visit the Haagensen House, home of Danish banker Hans Haagensen; and climb the 99 Steps (there are actually 103 of them). And we can't forget the beach. Don’t miss Magens Bay, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the world. For snorkeling or diving, head to Coki Beach instead.
St. John is Best for: Hiking, nature watching, and solitude
You won’t find crowds on St. John. That’s because the island doesn’t have a major airport -- most people take a ferry from St. Thomas, roughly three miles away -- and because nearly two-thirds of the island is protected as a national park . Once you get there, you won't find much in the way of public transit, shopping, or dining options, either.
What to do on St. John Island
But, if you’re looking for a tucked-away outdoor adventure or a romantic getaway, St. John is it. Hike the trails from the beach to the mountain top, snorkel the underwater trail at Trunk Bay, or explore the remains of sugar plantations in Virgin Islands National Park. Fishing and diving are also popular activities. Plus, once you get there, staying can be pretty affordable.
St. Croix is Best for: Culture, history, and food
Although it’s the largest of the three islands, St. Croix sees the fewest tourists, making it a great destination if you want a less commercialized Caribbean experience. We recommend basing your visit out of Christiansted, where you can tour the historic fort and catch a boat to nearby Buck Island for snorkeling at one of the only three underwater national monuments in the United States. St. Croix is also home to Cruzan Rum and Captain Morgan Rum (both of which offer tours and samples) and the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. You’ll also want to set aside one evening to kayak the Bioluminescent Bay--it's stunning.
What to do on St. Croix Island:
When it comes to things to do on St. Croix , options abound. If you’re a foodie who likes to explore the local offerings, book a table in the courtyard at Savant . For a quick bite, try one of the smaller roadside restaurants serving chicken or roti (curry wrapped in a flatbread).
