We did this trip on spur of the moment and were so glad we did! Mike was very passionate and knowledgeable about the shrimping/oyster industry and we learned so much! We had a small group that day so he went out of his way to answer all of our questions. We especially liked his recommendations for local sea food restaurants! A good time was had by all!

We took the trip yesterday and it by far exceeded our expectations. A really well narrated experience by the captain, Mike, and Billy the deckhand, a pair of authentic Cajun fishermen. They truly want to tell the public about their sustainable industry (oysters and shrimp), and they do a great job. I learned a lot, especially about the Gulf of Mexico and its unique ecosystem. These genuine conservationists work hard and are living the life! It should be a great school trip for kids of any age, I wish I'd had something like this when I was at school. This was definitely a highlight of our visit.

What a fun activity to do while visiting Biloxi! The gentleman who hosted my family was entertaining and filled with great information and interesting facts. The boat was safe and comfortable. My family of about 25 members fit on the boat. Everyone, from the youth to the elders had a good time. We were able to experience the shrimping process and were amazed at the sea life that was rangled in, including beautiful blue crabs and interesting fish. We were treated to fresh cooked shrimp, which was a highlight for everyone. An awesome time!

Always a big hit when I have friends and family visiting! With shrimp being the centerpiece for most meals when visitors come to the coast, this experience to learn about the industry, local economy and the sea life! I took my family including my two nephews (6 & 3) and they loved seeing the nets get put out, what got scooped up, and being able to hold the shrimp! The boat ride is smooth and pleasant with seats below and on the top deck. The staff is personable and entertaining while always knowledgeable. I had emailed them a few times with questions and they were quick to respond to me! The shrimp tour lasted about 2 hours, and was a great afternoon activity!

Our family has come here multiple years and LOVE this experience. The captain is funny, the deckhands are always amazing/cool/great with kids. He promotes all the local businesses and is extremely informative of not just shrimping, but the history surrounding biloxi. 100/10 recommended booking with them! FYI-- they're dog friendly.

Well worth the time and fare for the trip. Very educational. Be sure to get to dock about 30 minutes prior to sailing time as great information about how clams are cultured. Certainly wish the best to the shrimping crew of Biloxi Shrimping! Maybe will be able to get a better audio for upper deck.

Thank you for coming!

This was a very fun trip! The man running the trip, David, was very kind and personable. He took time to educate everyone on various different topics that make the fishing industry what it is, not just talking about shrimping; this included topics like economics, farming, and even the coast guard! He identified everything that he caught and was very educational about how it was used in todays market, whether it was sold on the docks that we departed from, or turned into something sold on shelves. I really appreciated that he let us move around freely seeing as the experience is over an hour and it can get uncomfortable sitting in the same spot for so long. In addition, he gave us great recommendations for restaurants in the area, seeing as most of us were from out of town. I highly recommend this experience, it is a great price for what you get to do! I will also say, there were a plethora of children on our ride, and the captain was very kind and letting the children be involved in the show-and-tell process. Which I am sure was a delight to them and their parents!

This was such an unexpected pleasure trip. I wanted to learn more about fishing and shrimping. This was a great way to learn. We went out with a full boat and we learned all about shrimp. How to spot good shrimp, what to look for when shopping, and how they freeze seafood! I have been to Biloxi often and wish I had done this trip before. This would be great for all ages. The captain is so knowledgeable and will answer any questions you may have. Then I learned that they take people out to fish and it's not hella expensive. Since I have never done it before I didn't want to pay almost 1000 and be scared. We were leaving the next day so we couldn't go fishing but next season (she said March or April) I will be there with the family!

#1 Biloxi Casinos

Biloxi's casinos draw gamblers far and wide – and they're a big part of the city's tourism and history. Many of the area's casinos are connected to megaresorts that bring in millions of dollars for the city, and they have certainly seen some changes (and improvements) over the years. All of the city's casinos were originally floating gaming venues: They were required by Mississippi law to be built on barges separate from the land communities (in an attempt to isolate gaming activity from the general public). But when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, all the casinos were either severely damaged or completely destroyed. A new law allowed the casinos to be rebuilt on land and hoteliers invested in the construction of new or refurbished casinos.

Some of the most popular gaming spots in Biloxi include the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino , the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi , IP Casino Resort Spa , Harrah's Gulf Coast and Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel . These properties are not only home to casinos, but also offer accommodations and amenities like spas, fitness centers and pools. Beau Rivage also boasts a theater that receives rave reviews and has featured musical acts like Tony Bennett, ZZ Top and Martina McBride as well as comedians and dance performances. When it comes to gambling, the casinos host everything from table games, roulette and slots to poker rooms and high-stakes card lounges.

Aboard a Shrimp Boat in Coastal Mississippi – All About Shrimping

I am feeling completely Forrest Gump as we board a shrimp boat on a sparkling sunny day in Romantic Coastal Mississippi .

shrimp boat tour mississippi

“There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That — that’s about it,” Bubba (Forrest Gump)

We were guests of Visit Coastal Mississippi on a media trip while in the state and received food, accommodations and excursions in exchange for story consideration here.

Table of Contents

Fresh Seafood

Shrimp is my favourite fruit of the sea.

There’s nothing quite like fresh seafood and the Gulf Coast has some of the freshest in the world. Gulf Coast shrimp is juicy and plump, unlike what we have at home in southern Ontario, Canada. So, when I took a trip with three other travel writers and influencers back in late 2019 and spied this shrimp boat tour on my itinerary I was curious and excited to learn something new about one of my favourite foods.

What did I actually know about shrimp? Not that much, it turns out.

shrimp boat tour mississippi

A Favourite Choice

Shrimp is versatile and you can add it to so many dishes. I love that about shrimp, but I rarely am able to eat it at home because my husband has a seafood allergy. So, when I travel for business or pleasure with girlfriends or on a media adventure, I am all in when it comes to seafood.

shrimp boat tour mississippi

In Coastal Mississippi I boarded a shrimp tour boat with friends and we learned a few curious facts about shrimping.

So how do they fish for shrimp and what does that look like?

shrimp boat tour mississippi

This was a shrimp boat tour, so we were not actually out there to gather a whole mess of shrimp and feed an army or anything. We were just there to sightsee and learn about a key industry in the area. It’s also worth noting that everything was returned to the water after catching and observing for a few moments.

A Few Shrimp Facts

Water temperature determines where the shrimp go.

shrimp boat tour mississippi

Shrimping Ends in December

We are in Coastal Mississippi in the middle of a twelve day girl’s trip through the southern US. Coastal Mississippi is a brief visit but the food and the pace of life makes an immediate impression. Up and down the coast in Biloxi you will notice casinos, but if you venture further along the coast you will find a more romantic side.

This shrimp boat tour is a highlight for me while here for reasons noted above and because this is unusual excursion. Catching shrimp is not something this gal does every day. So, hearing all of these shrimp facts makes me happy.

Coastal_mississippi_shrimp_boat_tour

Today’s Catch

Anyways, because it is November, when we visit, the haul that the shrimp boat gets today is very small and it also contains a soft shell crab or two. It’s almost the end of shrimp boat season.

Shrimp migrate east, south and west, but not north, of course. Water temperature is trigger for growth.

Quantity of the Haul

Lady Brenda, the medium sized boat that we are on, will probably gather 600 to 800 pounds of shrimp in a season. It is in fact a working trawler, just not so much today, because we are late in the season.

Big shrimp boats go out for 4-5 weeks and they will bring back millions of pounds of shrimp. Beautiful Biloxi is the capital for US shrimp.

Everybody Loves Shrimp

Best not to buy shrimp in January or anywhere before May according to the captain of our ship.

As water temperature drops, the migration kicks off again.

There are Different Colours?

The difference between brown shrimp and white shrimp is the size of their antenna. Indeed that part is surprising, because the few shrimp that the boat captain pull out of the sound have gigantic antenna, not at all what I expected.

What is There to Know About a Shrimp Boat?

If you are out on the water, you should never play chicken with a shrimp boat. They might not look like much from the shore if you are boarding one but fully extended and loaded with shrimp it can be formidable.

Keeping Track

There are transponders on all the shrimp boats out there to be sure they are not breaking the law fishing where they are not supposed to.

shrimp boat tour mississippi

What’s the Lifespan of Shrimp?

Shrimp live two years, but that’s rare. In fact, the average lifespan is 9-12 months. Baby shrimp take 3-4 weeks to develop and mature. They range in size when fully grown, depending on the type of shrimp anywhere from 5 to 9 inches.

Is There a Quota on Shrimp?

We don’t worry about shrimp conservation, the captain says. Shrimp eat more shrimp than anything else. Shrimp are the biggest threat to shrimp. They eat plankton and other shrimp.

shrimp boat tour mississippi

There’s no quota on shrimp in the Gulf Coast. It’s more driven by common sense says the captain of the boat. About 95 % of all shrimp are consumed in the wild.

Shockingly, only about 1% of shrimp survive in the Gulf. A female shrimp lays about half a million eggs and about 3/4 of all shrimp are female. Weather determines shrimp gender.

Ideal Conditions

Shrimp like a warm dry spring. In 2019, when we visited the coast, they’d just experiences a lot of freshwater and an algae bloom. That did not provide ideal conditions for shrimp to thrive.

Other Details

Ample parking available and the tour itself is affordable ($20 per person) and educational, which makes it more than worth the money.

Shrimp Boat Tour

In 1904, Biloxi was dubbed the seafood capital of the world. It’s only logical then that while you are here eating all of the great seafood, you investigate a bit further where it comes from. A shrimp boat tour is a brilliant way to spend a couple of hours and learn about the seafood industry while at it.

Shrimping trip aboard the sailfish.

Bluecrab on board the Sailfish

While in Biloxi I stumbled upon a tour in which we would ride out in an actual shrimp boat and learn how a shrimp boat works, and watch as the crew throws out a net and then explains what was caught. I decided this would be the perfect educational experience during our short stay in Biloxi. The tour can be found at https://www.biloxishrimpingtrip.com/

It was a brisk November day when we bundled up and set out for our tour. We drove to the marina where we were to board the boat. The only problem we encountered was that we were unsure whether we were in the right place; there were no signs, ticket booths, or anything that would verify we were where we were supposed to be other than the red dot of our GPS signaling our arrival.

We waited around hoping to spot the arrival of the captain or other passengers. Just before our 1:30 departure time, the captain and her shipmate showed up and led us aboard their relatively small shrimping vessel. Several other families boarded the boat as well, making it approximately 15 people in total.

“The Sailfish is a two story shrimp boat with an upper level, open air seating area and a bottom level, closed in, windowed seating area. ”

The Sailfish is a two story shrimp boat with an upper level, open air seating area and a bottom level, closed in, windowed seating area. Being that it was a cold day, everyone aboard chose to sit in the bottom area, not only due to the frigid weather, but this was also the best view of where the crewmate lectured from and showcased the catch from the net.

After a brief introduction and some safety instructions, we set off on the waters of the Mississippi Sound. The learning began right away and did not stop until we docked back at the marina. As the captain maneuvered the boat, the crewman taught us everything from interesting tidbits about the waters to types of shrimp to how to tell if shrimp in the stores is fresh. He also suggested several restaurants in Biloxi to get the best shrimp! While he talked, a 16 foot net was being dragged on the bottom of the Mississippi Sound.

“All in all I can say this was a great experience! For $16.00 each we were able to not only take a tour on the Mississippi Sound, but also learn a great deal about the shrimping business

Once the net was pulled back up, the contents were dumped onto a small viewing/ sorting area. Unfortunately, the catch was extremely sparse; however, the crewman picked up every creature, explained it in detail, and let the passengers get up close and touch them. Several shrimp were passed around to get a good look at. We watched as he informed us about squid, a blue crab, shrimp, and several fish, and then proceeded to provide a much appreciated afternoon snack to the waiting pelicans hovering about.

All in all I can say this was a great experience! For $16.00 each we were able to not only take a tour on the Mississippi Sound, but also learn a great deal about the shrimping business, types of shrimp and other marine creatures, and how a shrimp boat works. I would definitely recommend this tour for families looking for something unique to do while in Biloxi.

Biloxi Shrimping Trip restores 70-year old boat

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - On another nice spring day on the Coast, visitors are taking a ride on the Sailfish.

Those on the tour are exposed to what Biloxi Shrimping Trip describes as a “real shrimping expedition,” as tourists can watch and learn the process of shrimping from start to end. The boat, made in 1952, was recently restored.

“This is the first time she’s been torn completely apart and put back together, piece by piece,” said Mike Moore, Sailfish’s captain. “We made sure we used the right materials.”

Moore brought the boat to Harris Marine in Ocean Springs, where much of the restoration was done. The front of Sailfish saw a major overhaul over the course of five months.

Restoring a boat like this isn’t easy nor cheap. However, with the help of a grant from the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, Moore says the boat has been replaced to its former glory.

“Long story short, we had some really good people on this project to make sure it was done right. We’re pleased with the outcome,” Moore added.

The key for success is keeping the tourism aspect going, and also making sure it’s shipshape for what looks to be another busy season out on the water.

“Summer is coming right down the pike. Looking at the phones and seeing the numbers, things look great this year,” he said.

Matt Hinton with Southern Salt Classic Boat Works was in charge of the restoration.

Professor of Landscape Architecture, Pete Melby taught landscape architecture courses at Mississippi State University for 32 years. Through his research, he authored several texts for design of irrigation systems at the request of the landscape contracting industry. Through this collaboration, the team was stimulated to work together evaluating eroding beaches along the Gulf Coast which resulted in the establishment of a salt marsh with native plants creating sand dunes, stabilizing the beaches.

It is this work that inspired Pete Melby to create art depicting the scenes he observed along the beautiful Mississippi Sound as well as pen his suspense novel, “Third in Line”. The protagonist finds herself in the salt marshes and on the offshore fishing beds from New Orleans to Bay St. Louis as she inspects the habitats of the oysters, shrimp and blue crabs of the Gulf Coast. The artwork included in this locally relevant and accurate fictional work was created by none other than the author himself.

Artist, author, and retired educator, Pete Melby is married with two children. He enjoys sharing his wisdom and talent through exhibits, book signing and community engagements. Melby’s art and literary works will be available for purchase during this exhibit.
