I have broken open the large blue bible. It says that Safari Arms operated Pheonix, AZ from 1978-1987 until they were bought by Olympic Arms. Its worth, depends on the model, naturally, and the easiest way to tell the models is the barrel length. I'm going to guess that its a 5" barrel and say that in Exc its worth 600, VG its 500. The only thing I would look for is if it has Ivory grips. Those add an extra 100 all around. Good luck. Yes.. my blue bible is the 2011 edition.

I have a Safari Arms Matchmaster Carry Comp that I have owned since 1993. Bought it new. Works good, last a long time. Seriously I haven't any problems with it.

Both have beryllium frames and are serial numbers 001 and 002 from the Seattle factory. Awesome guns. Ultra reliable, very well made. I would happily pay $600 for a stainless Safari Arms pistol. I had a hell of a time getting one from them, and once i got it it had some nicks on it, but the thing is a great shooter. Only problem is finding a holster that will fit it because of the squared trigger guard

I'll be looking at the SAFARI ARMS tomorrow, maybe I'll buy it

I'd get it. They're unique and somewhat collectable, and cool looking. I've never heard of them ever having problems.

Saw this locally for sale and I know very little about them other than they were late 70's/early 80's before they became Olympia Arms. Your thoughts? Thanks Manny

Firearm Gun Trigger Gun barrel Gun accessory

I will try to set up meeting tomorrow

Cwo Thanks info. Seller is asking $750

That’s one hell of a great price if condition is good. I paid north of $1k with four magazines and new grips.

safari matchmaster 1911 review

State of the art around '80. Not so much now. Didn't always run. But that is easy enough to fix. Still it is a classic 1911. And the "chit" back in the day. @ $750 the price is good for a hard chromed gun in that kind of shape, if you like the attributes to the build.

Triggerguard spike looks like it could kill. Looks to be in good shape in the pictures.

If you were a gun nerd in 2008, then I’m betting you couldn’t escape the film Wanted . How could you? The main characters were superheroes, and their special powers were guns.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to follow and signup for notifications!

Chris Pratt Wanted

Sure the movie was as far from realistic as it could get, but the action was a ton of fun. The film didn’t take itself super seriously, and we got to see a near pre-fame Chris Pratt get smashed in the face with a keyboard.

It’s fun with guns without trying to be serious.

Wanted is full of guns, and today we are looking at the highly customized 1911 wielded by Fox in the film.

Bending Bullets

Wanted takes place in a universe where master assassins defy physics to get their kills.

The film is very loosely based on a graphic novel but loosely is the keyword. In the film, a magical loom directs the assassins to their targets.

Wait, I just realized how stupid that sounds as I typed it. Okay, but hear me out. The film is a super stylish romp where highly trained assassins shoot at each other.

Our main character Wesley is a newbie and a bit of a loser. He works a dead-end office job, his girlfriend is cheating on him, and he gets massive anxiety attacks. The movie later goes on to state those anxiety attacks are a superpower.

Must be nice. The only power I get from anxiety is the drive to avoid people at all costs.

Anywho, he trains under the mysterious Fox, played by Angelina Jolie. She teaches him how to bend bullets (no, really), and she does so with a highly customized 1911.

Specifically a Safari Arms Matchmaster. The dead giveaway is the weird finger groove thing on the grip.

Safari Arms is the only company I know that does that. Also, if you look closely, it has “Matchmaster” right on the side.

Matchmaster

The gun itself features a mix of practical customization and ornate customization.

The Matchmaster sports beautiful work on the slide and a set of custom grips that makes it stand out even in the hands of the beautiful Angelina Jolie. Beyond that, the gun features a massive compensator .

Specifically a Parrish 1911 Bushing Compensator. Who wants more recoil and muzzle rise when you can have less?

On top of that, it sports a skeletonized hammer, a super longer beavertail, a massive safety, and adjustable sights.

Matchmaster side view

Fox also seems to be a fan of the Wilson Combat 10-round magazines , as that seems to be all she ever uses.

The Safari Arms brand is no more but where once a subsidiary of Olympic Arms. The Matchmaster was an extremely high-quality M1911 designed for competition.

These guns are exquisite works and border on absurd in terms of price.

A more typical Safari Arms Matchmaster

Admittedly, if you were an assassin, the Matchmaster is the type of gun you could trust your life to.

Dropping Hammers

Throughout the film, the action is always over the top.

From the shootout in the store with a Corner Shot to the end gun design where the Halo double-kill voice would lose his mind.

Fox using the Cornershot during the grocery store shootout scene

Fox alternates between one-handed and two-handed grip, and while the movie is silly, Angelina Jolie knows her way around a gun.

She always uses a high grip and makes the most of that massive beavertail. Her two grip is fantastic, and while aiming seems optional, she holds the gun at eye level to shoot.

She also curves bullets with the best of them!

Angelina Jolie shooting the Matchmaster in Wanted

Angelina Jolie has a bit of a history of wielding firearms well with Tomb Raider and its sequel, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Smith .

Rumor has it she’s a bit of a firearms aficionado . At the very least, she is confident and competent with a handgun.

Angelina Jolie in the grocery store shootout scene

While Angelina Jolie is still making flicks, Safari Arms is gone, and so is the Matchmaster. It’s a real shame because they are fantastic firearms and quite nice. At least we have the gun immortalized in the film.

Wanted was a fun movie, and the gunplay might not have been realistic, but it was original.

Nice to know some things never change!

Here it is the two thousands, stovepipes are still 'round. (that's a joke, my cases usually go egg-shaped unless I have a lower rate spring in it, then they only dent). Since "fixing my Matchmaster," I don't have anywhere near as many stovepipes as I used to have (1/box, now 1/5 boxes). My best solution? Holding a 3-5 pound weight and doing wrist curls with it. After the recoil spring weights, and the fancy extractors (spelled "darned expensive") and polishing every thing (except my own good shooting habits), I think it was my own limp-wrist style that caused them. No, I have no "rainbows" on my vehicles, just couldn't hold it as tight as I should have. As Mr. Hotgun (to whom you replied and originally started the thread) said: "The only limited factor is the man behind the gun hahaha" Fortunately, I will always have taxes that only go up and politicians that aren't worth their weight in lead to remind me that some things never change. I bought my first 45 ACP (a used star PD) in about '75. On a good day, a 5" group at 12" was the best it would do (between feed jams, stovepipes, and every case neck nicked on ejection) - maybe a little exaggeration, it might have been a foot and a half, which caused me to give up on them, until a late 90s league showed me some that were indeed fun to shoot because they did what they were supposed to do. Now I have several, the Matchmaster being my favorite (love that tang under the trigger guard), it shoots more accurately than my series 70 Gold Cup.

I mold my 200 grain bullets and have shot many thousand rounds with no stovepipes or stoppages. It shoots better than my other two 45's. One thing you need to do is to hold the pistol tight when you shoot it, otherwise it will cycle slow. This is a well built pistol and mine was tight as you know what.

12 # recoil spring.

If you have to use a 12# spring for "normal, factory" rounds, something is quite wrong. Perhaps you might want to post about this in the "gunsmithing" forum. Also "stove-pipes" when using standard ammo in a clean gun should never happen, no matter how it's held. b-
I use target loads only.

Anyone own a Safari Arms?

  • Add to quote

I have an opportunity to buy one and I really couldnt find a whole lot of info on them searching online....The model I am looking at is a matchmaster in particular, but really any info on accuracy and reliability would be greatly appreciated. Its seems relatively cheap for a 1911 and its making me shy away from the purchase. IMHO if I'm going to spend money on a gun I dont want something I'm going to have to work on a bunch just to get it to shoot as well as something I could have paid an extra few hundred on out of the box. Thanks guys

if you've ever seen "wanted," angelina jolie's 1911 is a safari, then again i don't know if she'd be available to answer your questions. i know this doesn't help but at least if you want pictures you can look that up.

Ya I saw wanted, but I really want someone that has actually shot one or better yet owns one. I have to opp to buy one and I want to see if its worth while

I own a Safari Arms Matchmaster and an Enforcer. I absolutely love mine. Both are accurate and reliable. From what I know they are hand fitted guns. They are a relatively small operation, therefore they don't produce a lot of guns. They are a division of Olympic Arms called Schuetzen Pistol Works, but Olympic doesn't actually make the guns if that makes any sense. I really like the finger groove frame. For what it's worth, these are two pistols I would likely never part with.

Safari Arms are one of the better 1911 clones for the money. I have built 4 1911's on their frame. All my frames say Olympic Arms on them and not Safari, same company, could be because mine are factory seconds. A guy name Richard builds their 1911's. He used to build Detonics. You can call Oly Arms and ask to speak with Richard about their 1911's. FYI the waiting period for a Safari Arms is about a year or so. http://www.olyarms.com/ I am glad they are only 10 miles from me and on my way when I go fishing. I posted a gun review back in May 2008. THe gun review was conducted back in 1996. http://www.gun-tests.com/performance/jun96follow.html

Me Too! Olympic Arms bought in Lacey from the Factory I bought my COHORT 1911 about 2 years ago. Could not be happier! Tolerances are tight. Controls are NOTCHY. Accuracy - is better than I can use. Checkering is sharp. I do not understand the criticism of the grip lemon safety. The memory pad is nice. Nice having adjustable sights from the factory but I wish I would have told Richard to throw on some night sights. I wondered if I would like the finger groove on the front but it does help keep the pistol on target. Richard M still thinks he owns my gun even though I paid for it. (He'll probably box my ear for putting hex screws on the grips!) That is how much he cares about his product. I bought mine for $800 and some tax. They are going for a little over $900 now but it is a $2000 1911. Don't tell many others - there will be a 4 year waiting list if you do.

safari matchmaster 1911 review

I've only seen one, the Matchmaster years ago at an IPSC Club I use to shoot at. It seemed to work well enough I thought about getting it, but the finger groove on the front strap didn't feel right to me.

Finger Groove I am willing to bet either your hand will love it or hate it. I have not asked but I am willing to bet it can be ordered without the rather strange finger groove. I hope Oly can build faster without compromising quality. Seems that is a hard thing to do anywhere in any small company.

Used safari arms matchmaster 45 acp 1911 stainless steel 5" barrel, description.

The  Safari Arms Matchmaster  is a pistol from the well-known "  Colt M1911  " series specially developed for sport shooters. It is designed very closely to the original

For sport shooting, the weapon has several design features:

  • Grip  : The grip has a finger hook so that the shooter's hand does not move excessively even when the trigger is released several times. To improve the grip, a checker ring is attached in the lower front area.
  • Trigger guard  : The  guard  is provided with a hook that can be used for a finger of the second firing hand or to rest on a barricade.
  • Match barrel  : For precision even without special accessories, the standard version is equipped with a match barrel with an adapted barrel guide in the front part of the slide.

  5. Safari Arms any good?

Certain features like the finger groove, the Upswept grip safety, etc. Set them apart from other 1911's. I think the quailty of a recent production gun like the Colt Commander will be better in respect to Barrel fit, Barrel bushing fit, Slide to frame fit, etc. So if I could pick up the Safari under the $800 mark , I would get it.
