Force Motors unveils all-new 'Traveller' with BS 6 diesel and electric engines

Force Motors, the market leader in the inter-city commuter vans space, on Wednesday unveiled an all new premium model of its popular van Traveller with BS 6 diesel powertrain and electric engine options, developed over the past four years with a project investment of over ₹ 1,000 crore.

The yet-to-be named 18-seater van will begin commercial production towards the end of the year and will be showcased at the forthcoming Auto Expo in Delhi, the company said.

Presently christened T1N, the van will be export-focused and the Firodias, who were the pioneers of three-wheeler autorickshaws in the 1950s, will begin shipping the van, which boasts of 25 industry-first features, to the Gulf markets where it is already present, Prasan Firodia, managing director at Force Motors and the son of company chairman Abhay Firodia, told PTI.

The other focus market will be North Africa, South Africa, Asean, South America and the Saarc region, he said, adding from a regulatory compliance perspective it can be sold in Europe, the Far East and the US.

Firodia refused the reveal the price or the battery range saying the vehicle in not ready for commercial production. Its present 18-seater Traveller is priced at around ₹ 15 lakh.

Whether a higher pricing will be detrimental in a falling market like the present one, he said, "their primary focus will be exports as we want to use this van to be our springboard to become a global automotive company".

He also ruled out cannibalisation of the existing models saying there is market for every model as has been their experience with Trax and Traveller so far which offer 9-seaters to 26-seaters now.

The Pune-based company is the largest van maker in the country with 68 per cent market share and nets almost 50 per cent of its income from its engine supply business with Mercedes and BMW now.

In the quarter to September, Force Motors reported a 5.6 per cent drop on revenue at ₹ 818 crore while its net income plunged 84 per cent to ₹ 4.2 crore.

"The T1N was triggered about four years ago with the objective to develop a truly world-class shared mobility platform that would be ahead of current offerings and raise the bar in terms of passenger comfort, convenience and safety to international standards," the senior Firodia said while unveiling the project.

The junior Firodia said the company has invested more than ₹ 1,000 crore in developing the new van, which will be built at its Pithampur near Indore plant where it is building an entirely new body shop with robotic and laser welding facilities with an installed capacity of 35,000 units.

"We are the first domestic auto company to develop an all grounds-up next generation monocoque panel van platform, which will host many more models going ahead," the chairman said.

The managing director later told PTI that over the next two years, the new platform will come out with two new models in the shared mobility space and those will be unveiled at the forthcoming Auto Expo in Delhi.

On the capex plan, he said they have lined up around ₹ 600 crore for the next two years to develop these models.

The van is the first in this category offering crash and rollover compliance with air bags for driver and co-driver even though current laws does not mandate them. The van boasts of many more features developed in consultation with leading technology specialists and domain experts from Italy, Spain, Britain, Germany, Japan and the US.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force instructor pilot was killed when the ejection seat activated while the turboprop aircraft was still on the ground at a Texas military base, the Air Force said Tuesday.

The instructor pilot was in a T-6A Texan II at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, when the seat activated during ground operations on Monday. The pilot was taken to a hospital and died Tuesday, the Air Force said. The pilot’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The T-6A Texan II is a single-engine two-seater aircraft that serves as a primary trainer for Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps pilots. In a training flight an instructor can sit in the front or back seat; both have lightweight Martin-Baker ejection seats that are activated by a handle on the seat.

In 2022, the T-6 fleet and hundreds of other Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps aircraft were grounded after inspections revealed a potential defect with one component of the ejection seat’s cartridge actuated devices, or CADs. The fleet was inspected and in some instances the CADs were replaced.

When activated the cartridge explodes and starts the ejection sequence.

Ejection seats have been credited with saving pilots’ lives, but they also have failed at critical moments in aircraft accidents. Investigators identified ejection seat failure as a partial cause of an F-16 crash that killed 1st Lt. David Schmitz, 32, in June 2020.

In 2018, four members of a B-1 bomber crew earned the Distinguished Flying Cross when, with their aircraft on fire, they discovered one of the four ejection seats was indicating failure. Instead of bailing out, all of the crew decided to remain in the burning aircraft and land it so they all would have the best chance of surviving. All of the crew survived.

Traveller Ian Newberry reports:   "on May 19 I travelled from Moscow to St Petersburg on high-speed Sapsan train 156 leaving at 13.00.  Departure was punctual and the staff greeting passengers could not have been better - they all speak English as well as Russian.  The service on the train was extremely good and in business class a full 3 course meal was served with wines and spirits all included in the price of the ticket.  Information was supplied through screens and announcements in English as well as Russian. The train is very comfortable and arrived 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 17.40.  If one wants to avoid a night train then this is a very civilised way to travel, on a par with any equivalent TGV or ICE available in western Europe."

Buy tickets online from Real Russia

You can buy tickets online in plain English from www.trains.realrussia.co.uk , with good after-sales service if you need it.  This system is good for checking Russian train times, too, even if you plan to buy tickets at the ticket office.  You can use it to buy Russian train tickets wherever you live in the world.  If you live in the UK they can also sort your Russian visa & visa support .

Which tickets can Real Russia sell?   They sell tickets for any mainline train journey within Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and the other ex-Soviet states, also for international journeys to or from those countries, for example Moscow to Berlin or St Petersburg to Helsinki, and also for Russian sleeping-car services within Europe, for example Paris-Moscow, Paris-Berlin or Budapest-Sofia. 

Reservations officially open 60 days before departure, but Real Russia allow you to request tickets up to 180 days ahead and they will contact you for payment when the price is confirmed.

Can anyone buy tickets using this system?   Yes, you can buy tickets online with a credit card whether you live in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or wherever.

How are tickets delivered?   If your train is e-ticketable, an e-ticket will be emailed to you.  If it's not, tickets can be collected free of charge at Real Russia's offices in Moscow or St Petersburg or they can be sent to any address worldwide.  Postage to a UK or EU address costs around £12-£15.

Who run this service?   Is it reliable?   This service is provided by Real Russia, a reputable joint UK-Russian company which has got very good reports from users.  Real Russia can also sort out your Russian visa & if necessary, Belarusian visa .

Booking tips :  Look for a train marked Firm if there is one. Firmeny trains are the best 'quality' trains, with modern coaches and good on-board service.  'TBC' means the system cannot provide a price for that particular train automatically, but they'll contact you with a cost by phone or email.  Note that even babies & infants need to have a ticket booked for them, even though they travel for free.

You can also now buy Russian train tickets direct from Russian Railways at www.rzd.ru which now has an English version.  It's a bit fiddly and not as user-friendly as Real Russia, but there are no fees and it does work if you persevere.  It accepts some overseas credit cards, though not all.  It may currently reject US-issued cards, though perhaps not all.

How to buy tickets at the station

Other agencies who can arrange russian train tickets, svezhy veter - www.svezhyveter.ru/sv/rutrains.htm, way to russia - www.waytorussia.net, what are the trains like , the three types of train, the three classes of accommodation, life on board russian trains.

Whichever class of travel you choose, each coach is looked after by a pair of attendants called a 'provodnik' (male) or 'provodnitsa' (female).  The provodnik will check your ticket at the door to the sleeper when you board.  Shortly after departure, the provodnik will come round to take your ticket and the small bedding fee (less than £1).  You may be asked if you would like a glass of black Russian tea ('chai') - this costs about 15p.  Bedding (two sheets, pillowcase and towel) is then handed out in sealed packs - blankets and mattresses will already be stacked in your compartment.  After a few journeys, you will become quite proficient at making up your bed!

A samovar with unlimited free hot water is available at the end of the corridor - pack some tea or coffee, sugar, cuppa soups or water-based drinking chocolate and bring your own mug.   Most long distance trains have a restaurant car serving drinks, snacks, and inexpensive full meals - reckon on less than £7 for two courses and a couple of bottles of beer.

Security.  Are Russian trains safe for families or single women?

Yes!  There is no need to worry unduly about security on Russian trains, even for families or women travelling alone. How do you think Russian families or solo women travel?  By train, of course, like everyone else!   Just use common sense as you would in a hotel, locking your door at night and not leaving valuables unattended in your compartment.  In addition to the normal lock on the compartment door, 'Spalny Wagon' and 'kupé' compartments have a security latch which stops the door opening more than an inch or two, and which cannot be released from outside.  There's also a safe place for your bags at night - if you have a bottom bunk, there is a metal box underneath the bunk which you can only get to by lifting up the bunk - in other words, for anyone to get to your bags, they will have to shift you off your bunk first..!  Your provodniks will probably also lock the access doors at each end of the corridor at night to prevent unwanted guests.  Men and women share the same compartments in Russia, but it's generally quite safe for women travelling alone.  If you're a woman and find yourself in sharing with three men that make you uncomfortable, just ask the provodniks (carriage attendants) if they can move you.

Travel insurance & VPN

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Twelve people injured, including eight taken to hospital, after Qatar Airways plane hits turbulence on Doha-Dublin flight

Twelve people have been injured, including eight taken to hospital, after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Ireland hit turbulence, Dublin Airport says.

Flight QR017, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, landed safely and as scheduled before 1pm local time on Sunday, the airport said.

"Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Rescue department, due to 6 passengers and 6 crew [12 total] on board reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey," Dublin Airport said in a statement.

"All passengers were assessed for injury prior to disembarking the aircraft. Eight passengers were subsequently taken to hospital."

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said the incident lasted less than 20 seconds and occurred during meal service.

Passenger Paul Mocc told RTÉ that he saw "people hitting the roof", and food and drinks flying everywhere. 

Another traveller, Emma Rose Power, told RTÉ that after the turbulence, "some of the flight attendants I saw, they had scratches on their face, they had ice to their face. There was one girl that had a sling on her arm".

Qatar Airways said in a statement that a "small number" of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries during the flight and were receiving medical attention.

The airline did not directly comment on the turbulence but said the matter is subject to an internal investigation.

"The safety and security of our passengers and crew are our top priority," it said. 

The incident took place five days after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore was forced to land in Bangkok due to severe turbulence, which killed a 73-year-old British man and left 20 others in intensive care.

Turbulence-related airline accidents are the most common type, according to a 2021 study by the US National Transportation Safety Board.

From 2009 through 2018, the US agency found that turbulence accounted for more than a third of reported airline accidents and most resulted in one or more serious injuries, but no aircraft damage.

Some meteorologists and aviation analysts note that reports of turbulence encounters also have been increasing and point to the potential impacts that climate change may have on flying conditions.

International traveler brings first measles case to Tulare County in 2024

T ULARE COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Public Health officials in Tulare County have confirmed the first adult case of measles of 2024 in Tulare County Thursday morning.

The patient is a non-county resident who is an international traveler who received medical care in Tulare County, according to the county.

Officials with the county say they are actively working to identify and trace potential exposures, determine if those exposed have been vaccinated for the disease, and evaluate their potential for developing and spreading measles. 

The county says anyone who has not been infected with measles in the past and has not been vaccinated for measles is at risk of contracting the disease.

If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected. Common symptoms of measles include:

• High fever (higher than 101° F)
• Red and watery eyes
• Tiny white spots that may appear inside the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin.

Donald Trump owns a multimillion-dollar fleet of VIP aircraft, including his prized Boeing 757 airliner. Take a look at his private collection.

Former President Donald Trump has a history of flaunting his wealth.

Among his best-known displays is the Boeing 757 private jet that became a centerpiece of his 2016 presidential rallies and has followed him on the campaign trail for his 2024 nomination.

Dubbed " Trump Force One ," the aircraft cost him a reported $100 million in 2011 and is outfitted with luxuries like an en suite bedroom, several living areas, and the Trump family crest.

Trump's collection of private aircraft dates back decades, though it has shrunk over the years.

The billionaire has also owned Sikorsky S-76B helicopters, a nine-seater Cessna Citation X, and a Boeing 727 tri-engine airliner — the latter considered the original Trump Force One.

Trump's prized Boeing 757 is among his most flown private aircraft, having operated 72 flights so far in 2024.

According to the aircraft-tracking website JetSpy , Trump's 757 plane, registered N757AF, has flown 133 flight hours since January 1.

That compares with the 270 total flight hours across 132 flights the 757 flew in 2023. Most of his flying is between Palm Beach and New York City-area airports, per JetSpy.

The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to questions about Trump's jet use.

Trump brought the aircraft out of storage in 2021 and has since been seen flying between his various homes and court appearances.

During his four years as head of state, Trump traveled using the government's presidential fleet and most likely did not expect to need his own aircraft so soon after winning his first presidential term.

But it didn't take long for him to spruce up the 757 with maintenance and a fresh paint job so it could once again parade around the US.

The aircraft, complete with his name plastered in giant letters across the fuselage, has been the backdrop of Trump's 2024 rallies.

The 757 also served at his 2016 campaign rallies but with an old livery.

"Branding is a very effective business tool. That's No. 1," Trump told Business Jet Traveler in 2011 before he ran for president. "I also enjoy the spotlight."

It's an expensive and gas-hungry commodity, however, costing a collective $2.6 million in fuel and emitting about 4,100 tons of CO2 from 2023 to 2024, according to JetSpy data.

The customized plane has living rooms, bedrooms, TVs, gold-plated seatbelts, and a dining room, among other luxuries.

Trump bought the 33-year-old aircraft from the Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, and the $100 million price tag includes the jet and the VIP refurbishments.

The 757 is the second rendition of the ex-president's line of "Trump Force One" planes. The first was an $8 million Boeing 727 tri-jet.

According to The New York Times, Trump's ownership of passenger airliners dates back to 1997, when he acquired his Boeing 727.

Registered as VP-BDJ and built in 1968, the aircraft previously flew for American Airlines. The aircraft has since been scrapped by a company called MotoArt, using parts of the fuselage to make keychains sold as " PlaneTags ," according to the designer's website.

The three-engine 727 aircraft is about half the size of the 757 and was said to still be worth up to $8 million when sold, per the Times.

Business Jet Traveler reported that the aircraft was sold in May 2011 after logging more than 40,000 flight hours.

In 2009, an aircraft charter broker told CNN Money that the 727 was worth between $4 million and $8 million but would be expensive to maintain and operate because of its old age and three engines.

Luxuries like gold-plated seatbelts, bedrooms, showers, theater, and bidet touted Trump's riches.

Despite the fancy touches, the aircraft's costly operation made selling uniquely difficult.

"The problem with that plane is that the direct operation costs are so high," the broker told CNN Money. "It has three engines, so it would cost about $10,000 an hour to fly."

"There has to be a specific person who wants that plane — someone who wants it because it belonged to Donald Trump."

Before the 727 was his personal plane, it was part of the Trump Shuttle fleet — a now-defunct US carrier that the ex-president owned until 1992.

Trump bought a US airline called Eastern Air Shuttle and its 17 Boeing 727s in 1988 for $365 million, according to a Washington Post article from the same year.

His vision turned the initially no-frills operation into a luxury carrier, outfitting the planes with luxe interiors, in-flight calling, and free meals and drinks.

The plan worked for a while, but the high operating costs weren't sustainable, and Trump Shuttle came under US Airways in 1992 and eventually American Airlines via a merger .

Aside from his Boeing airliners, Trump has also galavanted around the world in a smaller Cessna Citation X business jet.

The Trump Organization's website says the Cessna's size makes it useful for flying into smaller airports that the 757 can't.

The speedy 1997 Cessna Citation X, registered N725DT, was regularly seen along Trump's campaign trail.

The tail number nods to Trump Tower's New York City address, 725 Fifth Avenue, while the "DT" is Donald Trump's initials.

Trump's Cessna was less flashy than his airliners, sporting just the family crest on the fuselage instead of his name in giant letters.

The "rocket in the sky" had space for up to nine people in the usual luxe interior.

Trump's Citation X variant could fly up to Mach 0.92, making it the fastest purpose-made business jet in existence until the updated Cessna Citation X+ first flew in 2012.

He could use it for longer journeys, like New York to California or Florida.

The Cessna shuttled Trump to rallies in 2016, though at one point it was flying illegally.

Trump failed to renew the Cessna's registration when it expired in January 2016 but continued to fly it until the error was caught about three months later, The New York Times reported. He said the FAA sent the renewal notices to the wrong address.

Nevertheless, Trump avoided a lengthy reregistration process by establishing a new LLC in Delaware and selling the Cessna to that company.

This triggered a temporary registration, which the Times reported is granted to new aircraft owners and lets the plane fly again almost immediately.

Trump, however, has recently sold the 27-year-old Cessna. FAA records show the jet was de-registered on May 13.

Jet Edge Partners , an Ohio-based aircraft broker, organized the sale of Trump's Citation X.

Sale details are unknown, but the private-charter company EvoJets estimates the acquisition price of a used Cessna Citation X would be about $10 million.

Beyond jet aircraft, Trump's fleet has sported one Airbus and three Sikorsky S-76 helicopters.

In addition to personal helicopters, the business mogul also owned a helicopter service called Trump Air as a connector to his Trump Shuttle flights, BJT reported.

The service used Sikorsky S-61 and Boeing Chinooks before going under alongside the airline.

In total, Trump has owned two 1989 S-76s, one 1990 S-76, and a Eurocopter Super Puma.

According to the Times' 2016 report, the two 1989 S-76s were worth $875,000, and the 1990 version was about $940,000.

While billionaires like Elon Musk fly modern private planes built in the 2010s, Trump typically buys older aircraft. In 2016, he told the Times that this strategy ensured he got good value out of his fleet.

"It was a little more plane than I needed, but I find it hard to resist a good deal when the opportunity presents itself," he said, referring to the 757.

Probably his best-known helicopter, registered N76DT, sported the recognizable Trump logo and his staple red, black, and white livery.

Trump acquired N76DT in 2010 and used it for shorter hops on routes from New York to Boston and Washington, DC.

According to the Times, the other 1989 Sikorsky was purchased in 2014, and the 1990 variant, registered N76TE, was bought in 2012.

N76TE was used for things like marketing Trump's Scotland golf courses, taking the now-deregistered G-TRMP tail number in the UK.

The helicopter interiors sport the same luxe vibes as his private planes, with Trump branding, leather seats, and gold finishings.

Famous for its use on "The Apprentice," the six-seater N67DT had two recliners and a four-person divan. The door panels were covered with leather and gold, and the wood interior was African mahogany.

According to CNBC , the interior of the similarly-looking N76TE helicopter cost Trump $6 million thanks to the significant gold plating.

Since leaving office, Trump has put up two helicopters for sale, registrations N76TE and N76DT.

FAA records show neither is registered to an active aircraft, but both tail numbers have been reserved by Trump — most likely to attach to any future helicopter or planes he chooses to buy.

Trump's third S-76, tail number N7TP, is still registered with the FAA .

The details of the sales are unknown, but The Independent reported that pre-owned S-76Bs typically sell for about $ 1 million.

When Trump put N76DT on the market, anyone could bid. The aircraft had operated some 20,000 flights in its 30 years of life.

The sale of both helicopters would bring Trump's once five-strong fleet of personal aircraft down to two.

Despite selling off some of his aircraft, Trump has still held on to two — and he's hoping to keep them amid his legal battles.

The Associated Press reported in March that the ex-president could have lost his prized 757 had he not struck a deal for the $454 million civil penalty he owed New York after losing a recent fraud case. That case is still under appeal.

Considering the 757 aircraft has become an iconic symbol of Trump's riches as he vyes for the 2024 presidency, it's unlikely he'll willingly part with the VIP plane anytime soon.
