Meet Airbolt: a TSA-approved travel lock you can control with your smartphone

If you’ve ever had your baggage lost or stolen while traveling, chances are you’ve wished for a better luggage lock. The travel industry is full of technological innovation these days, so why are we still using combination locks to secure luggage and keep our personal belongings safe? That’s the question that inspired  AirBolt , a Bluetooth-enabled smart lock that layers a variety high-tech security measures into a system that you control entirely from your smart phone. The AirBolt smart lock is comparable in size to most old-school combination locks, but despite this small footprint, the device is absolutely stuffed with features that put the safety of your stuff back in your hands.

For starters, the AirBolt lock pairs with your smart phone so that only you can unlock it when you’re within range of your luggage. An initial setup process lets you set distance controls to customize AirBolt’s many security measures. The lock’s alarm system, for example, can be set to go off if you get separated from your luggage, alerting you (and everyone around you) if you leave something behind or if someone walks off with your bag without permission. Without distance controls, AirBolt’s alert system still lets users sound the alarm manually if luggage goes missing unexpectedly or just gets misplaced.

There are also a number of built-in redundancy measures that make AirBolt extra secure for plenty of “just in case” scenarios. If you lose or damage your smart phone, for example, AirBolt lets you log in to your paired account from another device to unlock your bag and reclaim access to all your security settings. If you’re worried that your smart phone might go missing with your stolen or misplaced bag, AirBolt includes a security PIN to prevent unauthorized access if your phone should end up in the wrong hands.

Furthermore, AirBolt plans to employ a crowdsourced GPS network so that lost bags can easily be found by fellow travelers — instead of sitting unclaimed in the back rooms of crowded airports. Any AirBolt community member will be able to ping the last known location of a misplaced bag if they were within range. For the crowdsourced GPS to work effectively, lost luggage hopefuls will either need to get very lucky, or enlist fellow travelers to join AirBolt so that the system can benefit from more hubs on the network.

One of the reasons that we’re still using combination locks on our luggage is actually quite simple: TSA regulations. Combination locks built to TSA standards are designed to keep luggage secure, as TSA master keys allow airport representatives to open and close locked luggage without damaging the hardware. Any non-TSA approved lock is subject to be clipped at any point, so AirBolt is designed to be fully-TSA compatible. AirBolt has already been pre-approved for up to 5,000 units by the TSA, and the company will only need to scale up its license (read: licensing fees) as the AirBolt grows in popularity.

Although the AirBolt can’t stop TSA agents from breaking into checked baggage, the lock’s use log makes it easy to see whether or not anyone has been snooping in the bag, even if it is within their rights to do so. And in countries where TSA regulations don’t apply, AirBolt settings can be adjusted for any individual trip so that your privacy is protected whenever possible.

AirBolt’s original Kickstarter funding goal of AU $50,000 works out to about US $36,168. But with more than a month left in the campaign, AirBolt is already close to doubling that goal, as the company nears US $70,000 in funding. Backers can get their own AirBolt lock for a pledge of $47 or more, and the device is expected to retail for about $56. It seems like there’s still plenty of work to do in pre-production, since the campaign states that meeting their funding goal will finance tooling, software development, and mass production of the AirBolt — but if all goes according to plan, AirBolt locks will supposedly be delivered in August 2016.

Outlines of people and objects on screen are highlighted, the contrast and brightness of the overall picture are cranked up, and extra sharpness is applied to everything. The resulting video would likely look strange to people with normal vision, but for folks with low vision, it should look clearer and closer to "normal" than it otherwise would. Excitingly, since Relumino Mode is ultimately just a clever software trick, this technology could theoretically be pushed out via a software update and installed on millions of existing Samsung TVs -- not just new and recently purchased ones.

TikTok user @cyborgism recently broke the internet by posting a clip featuring many AI-generated pictures of Breaking Bad. The theme here is that the characters are depicted as anime characters straight out of the 1980s, and the result is concerning to say the least. Depending on your viewpoint, Breaking Bad AI (my unofficial name for it) shows how technology can either threaten the integrity of original works of art or nurture artistic expression. What if AI created Breaking Bad as a 1980s anime? Playing over Metro Boomin's rap remix of the famous "I am the one who knocks" monologue, the video features images of the cast that range from shockingly realistic to full-on exaggerated. The clip currently has over 65,000 likes on TikTok alone, and many other users have shared their thoughts on the art. One user wrote, "Regardless of the repercussions on the entertainment industry, I can't wait for AI to be advanced enough to animate the whole show like this."

The AirBolt app is your companion for the AirBolt Lock. It’ll let you unlock it, manage its settings and give you access to many of its awesome features.

Search for the AirBolt app in the App Store or Google Play or scan here

Launch the AirBolt App and sign up (or login if you already have an account) Once you sign up, you must verify your email before you can login.

Login and click the “+” button to add your first AirBolt.

Easy Unlock.

When in default mode and the AirBolt app is connected, all you have to do is press the left button on the AirBolt and it’ll unlock for you! So, simple.

Removing the Latch Rope

When unlocking the AirBolt please pull the latch rope out from the point shown. Hold and pull outwards from the metallic pin.

AirBolt Status: In Range Vs Connected:

The AirBolt must be shown as “Connected” to perform an action such as unlock. When status is “In-Range” it means your AirBolt is nearby. The App will automatically change from “In-Range” to “Connected” status when you are close enough and it has completed the authentication process with your lock.

How to Passcode-Lock Any App on Your Phone

You are, we hope, already protecting your phone with a PIN, a fingerprint, or a face (or all three), but sometimes you'll want to add an extra barrier to particular apps—if you're lending your phone to a friend, say, or if your kids or partner are always borrowing your phone for whatever reason.

How you want to apply this additional protection is up to you. Some apps come with it built in; in other cases you'll need to enlist the help of a third-party app. The process is also different depending on whether you're using Android or iOS, and so we've split our guide up into two sections.

Apple doesn't give third-party apps quite as much leeway on iOS as Google does on Android, so you won't find any general-purpose locking tools in the App Store. Instead, you're relying on the individual apps themselves—many apps that can hold sensitive information will give you additional options.

Apple's own Notes app for the iPhone is one example. You can lock individual notes by tapping the Share button (inside a note) or long-pressing on a note (on the notes list) and then choosing Lock Note . Notes are locked using Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN code, and you can set this via Notes in the iOS Settings app.

WhatsApp has protections in place as well to keep prying eyes out of your messages. From the main screen, you need to tap Settings, Account, Privacy , and Screen Lock —you'll then be able to set up Touch ID or Face ID to guard access to your conversations. If either of those methods fail, you'll get pushed back to your phone's lock screen passcode.

Another third-party app with this same security measure is Dropbox, which is handy if you don't want your toddler accidentally wiping all your files with an ill-judged finger push. Tap Account , then the cog icon (top left), then Turn Passcode On . When you've set a passcode, you'll also be given the option to use Touch ID or Face ID as well.

We can't guide you through every app on iOS, but have a look inside your favorite ones to see if an extra security layer has been included. Evernote, Amazon, and PayPal are three other apps that can be locked with Touch ID or Face ID, and many banking apps now have the same feature too, so even if someone gets access to your phone (with or without your permission), they can't access all of your apps.

You have a couple of other tools you can turn to in iOS: They weren't primarily intended for securing apps, but they can do the same job. The first is Screen Time , which you can access from Settings : If you tap Use Screen Time Passcode to set a passcode, then select App Limits and set the daily limit for an app to zero hours zero minutes, you're effectively locking other people out of the app without the passcode.

Your second option is Guided Access , which you'll find in the Accessibility menu in Settings . Once you've enabled it, open an app and triple-tap the side button or home button—you then won't be able to switch to any other app without entering the phone's passcode. It's ideal if you want to let one of the kids play a game, but don't want them to venture onto any other apps.

Android does let third-party apps control access to other apps, so you can install one of these app lockers and block access to any apps you don't want other people snooping around inside. A passcode is usually required to gain access, though some locking tools can work with fingerprint sensors or face recognition.

There are a whole host of these apps available on Android, as a quick search on the Google Play Store will confirm. However, bearing in mind that these apps need some pretty deep access to your phone and your apps—because that's what they need to function—it's important to only consider ones that you completely trust.

We've tried quite a few of the app lockers on Android, and while we didn't come across any dangerous or suspicious activity, we did come across apps that had a variety of rough edges to them, a lot of advertising, and a lot of extra features that you don't necessarily want to add on top of the core functionality.

With all that in mind, Norton App Lock is the tool we'd recommend, from a name that you can trust. (You don't need to have signed up for any of Norton's other products to use App Lock.) In this case you can lock apps with either a passcode or a pattern drawn on the screen, and there's also the option to block access to the Recent Apps screen too.

Once you have Norton App Lock installed, it couldn't be easier to use: You just tap the apps that you want to protect with your passcode or pattern, and that's it. There's also the option to turn Norton App Lock in its entirety on or off as needed. If you forget your passcode or pattern, it can be recovered using the Google account that's linked to your Android device.

Some individual apps have also taken it upon themselves to put extra protections in place too. One of these, as on iOS, is Dropbox—if you go to Settings from the main app menu, you can select Configure Passcode to do exactly that. Any time that you or anyone else opens up Dropbox on Android, the passcode will be required to progress.

Finally, you can use an Android feature called Screen Pinning to keep kids, partners, friends, or colleagues inside one particular app. Bring up the Recent Apps screen (it's a swipe-up-and-hold on newer versions of Android), then tap the icon at the top of the app you want to be available, then tap Pin . Switching to any other app won't be possible until the phone's passcode has been entered.

How I chose these sex toys

In addition to the apps for the airlines you fly most frequently and your favorite hotel brands, these apps can help you save money on flights and accommodations.

Hopper has changed in recent years from just offering a price prediction tool for flights to being a true online travel agency. The app helps travelers find the cheapest flights, hotels and rental cars.

Of course, Hopper also still offers its signature price prediction technology to help you plan out when to book, as well as travel protection options and a price freeze to help you lock in the lowest possible price on hotels and flights.

Kiwi is used mainly to book flights, but it also helps you book hotels (using its partnership with Booking.com) and car rentals (using its partnership with RentalCars.com).

Some of the app's most interesting features include the "Deals" section, which pulls in discounted flights, and the "Travel hacks" section, which includes options for hidden city ticketing, throwaway ticketing (making one-way flights more affordable) and free price alerts.

Hotel Tonight

A dream for last-minute travelers, Hotel Tonight ( now owned by Airbnb ) lets you book stays for the same evening up to a few months in advance in thousands of cities worldwide. Available hotel rooms are categorized into sections like basic, luxe, hip, charming and solid, so you can select what works for your vibe. Take advantage of the daily drop feature, where you swipe to find a personalized deal with a special price only valid for 15 minutes after unlocked.

At TPG, we love a good loyalty program, and HT Perks, the app's nine-level reward program, is extensive. Not unlike a video game, you "level up" by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app, and you'll gain access to perks like discounts, VIP customer support and credits. Also, your levels never expire, so you can only continue to move up.

To book home rentals instead of hotels, use the Airbnb app. After entering your destination and dates, you can filter results based on the home type, price, requisite amenities and more. If you find something you like, you can book directly through the app.

The app is ideal for managing your trips while on the road — you can access all your bookings under the "Trips" tab, where you can view your reservation (and the address or directions), contact the host or change your reservation. Once you have a booking, you can also explore and book local experiences in your destination, such as wine tastings, kayak tours, hikes, shows and concerts.

Several cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve , offer Priority Pass memberships for all cardholders (enrollment required). OK, so Netflix isn't really a travel app, but it can be a lifesaver during a long flight on an aircraft without seatback inflight entertainment or at the airport during an unexpected flight delay or boring layover. If you have a Netflix account, the app allows you to download your favorite shows onto your device to watch offline.

Just make sure to download your shows while connected to Wi-Fi before flying and check them again preflight to make sure they haven't expired (you can usually renew any expired downloads, but you must be connected to Wi-Fi or data to do so). Monthly prices vary depending on the plan.

Another app that's not really a travel app, Spotify can still be incredibly useful during tedious travel moments — just pop in those noise-canceling headphones and listen to your favorite music, meditations, podcasts and more.

The app's Premium plans (prices vary) allow you to download all your content offline on your phone, so you'll have it during long flights or when you don't have data or Wi-Fi access. Google Translate

WhatsApp is a handy messaging service for travelers abroad as it uses an internet connection to avoid SMS fees.

It works like most other messaging apps: You start by creating an account, then add your friends and family members to contact and voila! You're able to call, video chat and send messages, images, voice memos, gifs and files just as you would in, say, iMessage (but with Android users too). You can also download WhatsApp on your Windows or Mac computer.

Meetup is an app designed for interacting with locals and other travelers who have mutual interests or shared hobbies. Whether you're traveling or at home, take what you love and do more of it with Meetup.

You can join groups to get updates on particular events you may want to participate in. The app can even help with networking, as there are many groups dedicated to business and technology. TheFork is one of the most useful resources for making restaurant reservations in Europe. Similar to OpenTable or Resy, the app lets you browse different restaurants by category and make reservations. TheFork features more than 60,000 restaurants in cities like London, Madrid and Geneva, as well as spots outside of Europe like Sydney, Australia.

With over 400,000 curated trails, AllTrails can help you find the hike or walk perfect for you and your group. It's not just mountain trails — AllTrails offers city walks, too, like easy meanders through the Marais district in Paris or peaceful strolls through Bangkok's Lumpini Park in Thailand.

You’ll also get theming, the ability to replace the icon so you can hide the app, lock frequency, and more. It’ll even take pictures of people who don’t put the password in right. It’s completely free to download and use. That’s another good perk for this one.

AI Locker by Mega Fortuna is a decent app lock. It does most of the same stuff as other app lock apps. That includes locking up apps and giving you various ways to access them. You get fingerprint support as well as pattern unlock and password unlock. It also comes with some customization options, and it can prevent other users from uninstalling apps. It won’t dazzle you with a ton of extra or unnecessary features. It’s just a simple app lock that does its job fairly well, and it’s also cheap.

Norton is a big name when it comes to antivirus apps. As it turns out, they also provide a free app lock app. It uses a four-digit PIN, password, or pattern as its lock system. You can also set a password for certain photos alongside apps. It also comes with a recommendation list that lets you know which apps should be locked. That’s a great tool for those who want a more hands-off approach. Like most, it also takes a photo of anyone trying to get into your phone. It can be bypassed if the person is clever, but it’s still one of the more solid app locks.

Smart AppLock is another decent free app lock option. It’ll lock up your apps and photos, including your settings, toggles, and phone app (for phone logs), to keep all of those safe. It disguises itself as a lock screen. That way, people think they are back at their device’s initial lock screen interface. Along with that, it provides auto-start upon reboot, break-in alerts, and delayed app locking that allows you to set a specific time interval before an app is locked after you exit it. Additionally, it has fingerprint scanner capabilities for Samsung devices. The best part? This app is a free option that is supported by advertising. The only downside is that it’s pretty easy to uninstall once someone figures out that it’s there.

Smart Launcher 6

Smart Launcher 6 is a newer launcher with some decent security features. The app features launcher stuff like ambient theming, adaptive icons, app sorting, gestures, hotkeys, and more. One of its more niche features is an app lock. The launcher hides apps you don’t want other people to see. Additionally, if they do find them, the apps are then protected with a PIN. We would’ve liked to have seen fingerprint reader support, but it’s a whole launcher with an app lock built-in, and that’s a bit of a rarity in this space. Thankfully, this rarity is also pretty decent as a launcher and as an app lock.

SpSoft AppLock is a decent option for applocks. It features password, pattern, and fingerprint unlocking. That’s good news for those with fingerprint scanners. Like many, it’ll take a selfie of people who try to get into your apps and fail. It also has a bunch of fun little extras. You can make your pattern show up on a grid of up to 18×18 instead of the traditional 3×3. It’ll also show a fake error message instead of a lock if you want it to. The app will even keep your screen on when using certain apps, if you want. It’s a good option that also supports over 30 languages.

Ultra AppLock

Price: Free / In-app purchases ($1.99 – $7.49 per item)

Ultra AppLock is another decent app lock with enough features to work for. You simply open the app, lock the apps you want, and then you need a password to enter them. The app supports fingerprint locks and can send break-in alerts if someone guesses the password wrong. The app lock part of this app works fine. However, it also includes some cleaner and battery-saving features that absolutely do not work, and we recommend not using them. It’s reasonably good and should get the job done for the most part, as long as you stay away from the cleaner features, which are reported to have caused software glitches and other issues for this app’s users.

4 best Android applocks and privacy lock apps

When you stop and think about it, there are all kinds of things you might not want others to see on your phone. For example, you might want to keep your conversations with friends private, stop anyone from checking your browser history, or restrict access to specific apps, photos, or folders. You could add a lock screen, but this doesn’t offer any protection if you share your device or if someone somehow gains access to your unlock code.

So what’s the answer? Simply install an app capable of password protecting your apps and files. These are known by many names but generally, you’ll see them called an applock, app locker, or privacy lock app (note that this is different from a vault, which tend to only protect image folders). Many of these applocks can’t even be uninstalled without the correct code, so there’s no easy way to circumvent the protection that they offer.

So, without further ado, here are the best privacy lock apps for Android:

1. Norton App Lock

Privacy lock programs ask for a lot of permissions. This is usually necessary for them to function properly, but it can still be a little uncomfortable if you don’t fully trust that the developers are legitimate. Enter Norton App Lock, a simple yet effective applock created by an immediately recognizable antivirus company. This service is completely free, with no ads, and runs on any device running Android 4.1 or newer.

Now, this app is fairly basic, but it should be enough if all you want to do is prevent your kids from accessing specific apps (there’s no way to protect individual files as yet). Users can lock apps with a 3×3 pattern, a fingerprint, or a PIN code, and if someone enters the wrong code three times, the app will snap a photo of them. Notably, it’s the only app in this list that prevented us from taking screenshots due to its security policy (hence the less-than-stellar images above).

We like how easy Norton App Lock is to use : it’s possible to lock an app just by finding it in the list and tapping it once. This service also offers a one-click “lock recommended” feature that automatically protects your social media apps, the camera, cloud storage, and your system settings from unauthorized access. It’s also possible to stop your unlock pattern from appearing as you enter it, which could help you keep it a secret from anyone who might be looking over your shoulder.

2. Samsung Secure Folder

This is a rare beast: a completely free Android app that does exactly what you need it to, with minimal fuss. If you have a new-ish Samsung phone, you likely already have this app (though it’s easy to miss, given the amount of software that comes preinstalled).

The only downside is that, because this app relies on proprietary tech, it’s currently only available on Samsung devices . Samsung Secure Folder is available in the Galaxy store and is compatible with any Samsung device running Android 7.0 Nougat or higher.

Let’s start with the basics: Samsung Secure Folder users can move apps and files to a folder that’s secured by a pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprint. Note that you’ll have to delete the original apps, since only the version inside the folder is password-protected.

Here’s how to create your own Secure Folder:

• Go to Settings and tap on “Biometrics and security”
• Tap “Secure Folder”
• Tap “Continue” and sign into your Samsung Account or create one
• Read all the permissions that Secure Folder requires. If you agree, tap “Continue”
• Choose the lock type that you want to use and tap on it.
• Set the pattern and tap “Continue”. Repeat this process.
• Access the folder using the “Secure Folder” shortcut on the apps screen.

The Samsung Secure Folder app has a couple of neat features built-in. These include the option to change the icon to something nondescript (or hide it completely), type a custom name for the app, and hide notifications from any apps in the folder. Users can also create multiple profiles and restrict clipboard access to prevent someone from copying and pasting data into protected apps.

3. AppLock – Fingerprint (SpSoft)

AppLock – Fingerprint from SpSoft is an extremely customizable app locker that would be well-suited to anyone who likes to tinker with advanced settings . This service is ad-supported but, rather than being a nuisance, these only appear infrequently and can easily be closed. There is a slight catch in that it can’t password-protect individual files, only apps. On the plus side, you can also lock functionality, such as USB permissions and Bluetooth access.

Once you’ve installed the app, you can set a PIN code, a pattern, a password, or choose to unlock the screen with your face, irises, or a gesture (essentially drawing a specific shape freehand). The complexity is up to you, too, with the option to create a pattern on a square of up to 18×18. Should someone enter the wrong code, the app will send a photo of them to your Gallery. You can also block notifications from secured apps and prevent your unlock pattern from showing as you draw, both of which improve your privacy.

Now, let’s discuss the more advanced features. You can choose to show a fake crash screen when a protected app loads, in order to deter any would-be snoopers. Users can also automatically unblock a device at specific times of day, or when connected to a specific network or Bluetooth device. If you want to get really technical, you can even lock or unlock it remotely by sending your device a text, WhatsApp, or Facebook message containing a specific keyword.

4. AppLock (DoMobile Lab)

Finally, we have another AppLock, this time from DoMobile Lab. This app is free, although you can pay a small amount each quarter for an ad-free version. To be fair, its ads are generally pretty rare and unobtrusive when they do appear. AppLock allows you to protect both your apps and your files using a pattern or PIN code, and if anyone guesses the unblock code incorrectly, it’ll snap a photo of the intruder for you.

There are some really neat features built-in, like the option to change the app’s icon to a compass or a calculator. It can also display a fake fingerprint scanner or crash screen when a user opens a protected app. This app even lets you randomize your keyboard layout to prevent anyone who’s watching from deciphering your password.

If we had to find a complaint, it’d be that AppLock has quite a few unnecessary features, like a battery optimizer, games section, and “speed booster”. These are a distraction at best and don’t really provide any value, especially given the user already has access the Google Play store where they could find similar apps if needed.

Do I really need a privacy lock app?

Even if you have nothing to hide, you could still benefit from installing a privacy lock app on your phone or tablet. To begin with, they might offer more complex locking mechanisms than your device does by default (such as iris recognition or a larger pattern grid), which can make it all but impossible for anyone to force their way in.

If you’ve ever handed your phone to a young child, you’ll have noticed just how quickly they seem to be able to access content that might not be suitable. If you’re really unlucky, they might even stumble onto the system language or display settings and inadvertently make it difficult to get your device back to normal. By restricting access to the settings menu and any non-age appropriate apps, you can prevent these issues entirely. Many app lock apps allow you to set up different user profiles too, meaning you can turn these restrictions on and off in a few clicks.

Which type of Android lock screen is most secure?

Android’s default pattern lock seems pretty secure at first glance; after all, there are 389,112 possible combinations, so it can’t be that easy to crack, right? Unfortunately, there’s research that says otherwise. In 2010, researchers were able to identify the lock screen pattern on two Android devices 68% of the time by using photographs of residual finger-smudges.

In another study , computer scientists found that after watching a video of someone entering a six-step unlock pattern, observers could replicate it 64% of the time, with an almost 80% success rate after multiple viewings.

What about biometrics? Well, facial recognition technology is convenient, but different providers have different levels of security, so some will provide more protection than others. In fact, research from a Dutch consumer protection organization indicates that a surprising number of Android devices can be unlocked simply by pointing them towards a photo of the owner. Fingerprints are more secure, by virtue of being harder to fake, but Kaspersky alone has identified multiple ways to trick the scanner into granting an attacker access.

PINs and passwords

This leaves PIN codes and passwords. A standard four-digit PIN has 104 (10,000) possible combinations, rising to 1,000,000 for a six-digit code. This is, needless to say, extremely secure, but you’d do well to avoid making your code a significant number, such as your birthday, since these are the first numbers an attacker will guess. Even more importantly, avoid the most popular combinations of 1234, 000, 2580, 1111, and 5555.

For maximum protection, you’d do well to create a mixed-case, alphanumeric password, ideally with at least one special character . This increases the complexity exponentially, with a six-character password offering a staggering 350 billion possible combinations. It might take a few seconds longer to enter, but you can’t put a price on total peace of mind.

The widespread availability of password managers means you don’t have to remember scores of these complicated, individual passwords. All you need to do is remember the password manager’s master password to access your safely stored login credentials.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that. 

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong. 

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't. 

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money. 

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account. 

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time. 

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

CBP Releases March 2024 Monthly Update

WASHINGTON — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released operational statistics today for March 2024. CBP monthly reporting can be viewed on CBP’s Stats and Summaries webpage .

“CBP - in coordination with our partners across the Federal government as well as foreign partners - continues to take significant actions to disrupt criminal networks amidst unprecedented hemispheric migration activity,” said Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner. “Encounters at our southern border are lower right now, but we remain prepared for changes, continually managing operations to respond to ever-shifting transnational criminal activities and migration patterns.”

CBP continues to work closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to quickly process individuals encountered at the border and remove those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States, delivering strengthened consequences promulgated by the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule and its associated measures. From May 12, 2023 to April 3, 2024, DHS has removed or returned over 660,000 individuals, the vast majority of whom crossed the southwest border, including more than 102,000 individual family members. The majority of all individuals encountered at the southwest border over the past three years have been removed, returned, or expelled. Total removals and returns since mid-May exceed removals and returns in every full fiscal year since 2011.

Ensuring Border Security and Managing Migration 

CBP continues to expeditiously process and remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the country. We are working together with our domestic and foreign partners to jointly disrupt irregular migration across the region, offering safe, orderly, and lawful pathways for intending migrants and taking action against ruthless smugglers who continue to spread falsehoods and show disregard for the safety and well-being of vulnerable migrants. We are also working alongside U.S. government partners to target transnational criminal organizations and smugglers who take advantage of and profit from migrants and taking new measures to stop individuals from exploiting traditional travel methods for migration.

In March 2024, the U.S. Border Patrol recorded 137,480 encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border.  In March, encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border were 45% lower than in December 2023 and 16% lower than March 2023.

CBP had a total of 189,372 encounters along the southwest border in March 2024, including U.S. Border Patrol encounters between ports of entry, as well as individuals who presented themselves at ports of entry (including those with CBP One™ appointments, detailed further below).

CBP continually analyzes and responds to changes in migration patterns, particularly irregular migration outside of lawful pathways and border crossings. We work with our federal and international partners to combat human smuggling. The fact remains: the United States continues to enforce immigration law, and those without a legal basis to remain will be removed. Migrants attempting to enter without authorization are subject to removal under Title 8 authorities.

The U.S. Border Patrol has undertaken significant efforts in recent years to expand capacity to aid and rescue individuals in distress. To prevent the loss of life, CBP initiated a Missing Migrant Program in 2017 that locates noncitizens reported missing, rescues individuals in distress, and reunifies decedents’ remains with their families in the border region. In March, the U.S. Border Patrol conducted 439 rescues, a 77% increase from January 2024. This brings the FY 2024 total rescues to 2,488 .

CBP One™ App   

The CBP One™ mobile application remains a key component of DHS’s efforts to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful, safe, humane, and orderly pathways and processes. Generally, noncitizens who cross between the ports of entry or who present themselves at a port of entry without making a CBP One™ appointment are subject to the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule. This rule presumes asylum ineligibility for those who fail to use lawful processes, with certain exceptions. DHS encourages migrants to utilize lawful processes, rather than having migrants take the dangerous journey to cross unlawfully between the ports of entry, which also carries consequences under Title 8.

The CBP One™ app allows noncitizens throughout central or northern Mexico who lack documents sufficient for admission to the United States to schedule an appointment and remain in place until presenting at a preferred port of entry for their appointment, reducing migrants’ need to crowd into immediate border areas. Use of the CBP One™ app to schedule appointments at ports of entry has increased CBP’s capacity to process migrants more efficiently and orderly while cutting out unscrupulous smugglers who endanger and profit from vulnerable migrants.

In March, CBP processed 44,000 individuals through appointments at ports of entry utilizing advanced information submitted in CBP One™. Since the appointment scheduling function in CBP One™ was introduced in January 2023 through the end of March 2024, more than 547,000 individuals have successfully scheduled appointments to present at ports of entry using CBP One™ instead of risking their lives in the hands of smugglers. The top nationalities who have been processed are Venezuelan, Haitian, and Mexican.

A percentage of daily available appointments are allocated to the earliest registered CBP One™ profiles, so noncitizens who have been trying to obtain appointments for the longest time are prioritized. CBP is continually monitoring and evaluating the application to ensure its functionality and guard against bad actors. 

CHNV Parole Processes

On January 5, 2023, DHS announced processes providing certain Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans, who have a supporter in the United States, undergo and clear robust security vetting, and meet other eligibility criteria, to come to the United States in a safe, orderly, and lawful way. These processes were built on the success of the process for Venezuelans established in October 2022; they are publicly available online, and DHS has been providing regular updates on their use to the public. This is part of the Administration’s strategy to combine expanded lawful pathways with stronger consequences to reduce irregular migration and have kept hundreds of thousands of people from migrating irregularly.

Through the end of March 2024, 404,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans arrived lawfully on commercial flights and were granted parole under these processes. Specifically, 86,000 Cubans, 168,000 Haitians, 77,000 Nicaraguans, 102,000 Venezuelans were vetted and authorized for travel; and 84,000 Cubans, 154,000 Haitians, 69,000 Nicaraguans, and 95,000 Venezuelans arrived lawfully and were granted parole.

Safeguarding Communities by Interdicting Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs

As the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, CBP is uniquely positioned to detect, identify, and seize illicit drugs before they enter our communities. CBP’s combination of interdiction and intelligence capabilities, complemented by its border search authorities, scientific services, non-intrusive inspection equipment, and canine detection teams, places it at the forefront of the U.S. government’s efforts to combat illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs.

CBP continues to conduct operations, including Operation Apollo, which target the smuggling of illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. These operations leverage intelligence and investigative information to target drug traffickers’ supply chains and interdict items required in the production of illicit fentanyl, including precursor chemicals, pill presses and parts, movement of finished product, and illicit proceeds.

Nationwide in March, fentanyl seizures increased by 16.1% compared to February and heroin seizures by 19.6% .

To date in FY 2024 through the end of March, CBP has seized 10,026 pounds of fentanyl. CBP has stopped more fentanyl in the last two years than in the previous five years combined, and we continue to optimize our intelligence and field operations to stop these deadly substances from reaching American communities.

Facilitating Lawful Trade and Travel 

 As international travel continues to increase, CBP is leveraging technology to streamline efficiency and increase security at air and land ports of entry. Travelers are encouraged to utilize CBP’s mobile apps to enhance their travel experience, including the Global Entry Mobile Application and Mobile Passport Control , as well as new Global Entry Touchless Portals at nearly all international airports across the United States, which protect passenger privacy and expedite arrival processing by eliminating paper receipts.

Travelers arriving by air into the United States increased 13.9% from March 2023 to March 2024, passenger vehicles processed at ports of entry increased by 2.9% , and pedestrians arriving by land at ports of entry increased 10.8% over the same period.  

CBP works diligently with the trade community and port operators to ensure that merchandise is cleared as efficiently as possible and to strengthen international supply chains and improve border security. In March 2024, CBP processed more than 2.8 million entry summaries valued at more than $275 billion , identifying estimated duties of nearly $6.2 billion to be collected by the U.S. government. In March, trade via the ocean environment accounted for 39.67% of the total import value, followed by air, truck, and rail.

Protecting Consumers, Eradicating Forced Labor from Supply Chains, and Promoting Economic Security     

CBP continues to lead U.S. government efforts to eliminate goods from the supply chain made with forced labor from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. In March, CBP stopped 749 shipments valued at more than $32 million for further examination based on the suspected use of forced labor.

Intellectual property rights violations continue to put America’s innovation economy at risk. Counterfeit and pirated goods threaten the competitiveness of U.S. businesses, the livelihoods of American workers, and the health and safety of consumers.

Consumers are encouraged to be alert to the dangers of counterfeit goods especially when shopping online as they support criminal activity, hurt American businesses, and often have materials or ingredients that can pose serious health and safety risks. Every year CBP seizes millions of counterfeit products worth billions of dollars had they been genuine. In March, CBP seized 1,633 shipments that contained counterfeit goods valued at more than $384 million . CBP is on the frontline of textiles and trade agreements enforcement, combating textile imports that are not compliant with U.S. trade laws. Protecting the domestic textile industry and American consumers is vital to U.S. national security, health care, and economic priorities. Toward this end, CBP is intensifying its targeting and enforcement efforts to increase and expedite the prosecution of illegal customs practices. CBP’s efforts include de minimis compliance, forced labor enforcement, cargo compliance, regulatory audits, and public awareness. This month DHS announced an enhanced strategy to combat illicit trade and level the playing field for the American textile industry, which accounts for over 500,000 U.S. jobs and is critical for our national security. The plan details the actions CBP and Homeland Security Investigations will take to hold perpetrators accountable for customs violations, and safeguard the American textile industry.

 Through targeting, detection, and interception, CBP agriculture specialists work to prevent threats from entering the United States.  

CBP issued 7,105 emergency action notifications for restricted and prohibited plant and animal products entering the United States in March 2024. Title II Web and Mobile App Accessibility Final Rule Signed by the Attorney General

The Attorney General signed a final rule updating its regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The final rule has specific requirements about how to ensure that web content and mobile applications (apps) are accessible to people with disabilities.

Purpose of this fact sheet: This fact sheet gives a summary of the rule. The summary is designed to provide introductory information about the rule’s requirements, particularly for people who may not have a legal background. For more information, please read the full rule . Please note that this link leads to an advance copy of a rule that has been approved by the Attorney General.  The official version of the rule will be published in the Federal Register.

Title II of the ADA requires state and local governments to make sure that their services, programs, and activities are accessible to people with disabilities. Title II applies to all services, programs, or activities of state and local governments, from adoption services to zoning regulation. This includes the services, programs, and activities that state and local governments offer online and through mobile apps.

Title II uses the term “public entities” to describe who it applies to, but in this fact sheet, we call these “state and local governments.”

A regulation, also called a “rule,” is a set of requirements issued by a federal agency for laws passed by Congress. When Congress passed the ADA, it gave the Department the authority to make regulations that explain the rights and requirements for Titles II and III of the ADA. A regulation usually has two parts. The first part is regulatory text. The second part provides information about the regulatory text and what it means, which is sometimes in an appendix to the rule.

The Department made this rule using a process sometimes called “notice and comment rulemaking.” As part of this process, the Department published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). The NPRM was basically a first draft of the regulation. It let the public know about the requirements the Department was considering and gave an opportunity for feedback.

The Department got feedback from the public on the NPRM. Based on that feedback, the Department made changes to certain parts of the rule. A description of the feedback the Department got and how it updated the rule is available in the appendix to the rule .

Like the rest of Title II, the rule applies to all state and local governments (which includes any agencies or departments of state or local governments) as well as special purpose districts, Amtrak, and other commuter authorities.

State and local governments that contract with other entities to provide public services for them (like non-profit organizations that run drug treatment programs on behalf of a state agency) also have to make sure that their contractors follow Title II.

Examples of state and local governments include:

• State and local government offices that provide benefits and/or social services, like food assistance, health insurance, or employment services
• Public schools, community colleges, and public universities
• State and local police departments
• State and local courts
• State and local elections offices
• Public hospitals and public healthcare clinics
• Public parks and recreation programs
• Public libraries
• Public transit agencies

The Reasons the Department Set Specific Requirements for Web and Mobile App Accessibility

State and local governments provide many of their services, programs, and activities through websites and mobile apps. When these websites and mobile apps are not accessible, they can create barriers for people with disabilities.

• For example, individuals who are blind may use a screen reader to deliver visual information on a website or mobile app as speech. A state or local government might post an image on its website that provides information to the public. If the website does not include text describing the image (sometimes called “alternative text” or “alt text”), individuals who are blind and who use screen readers may have no way of knowing what is in the image because a screen reader cannot “read” an image.

Websites and mobile apps that are not accessible can make it difficult or impossible for people with disabilities to access government services, like ordering mail-in ballots or getting tax information, that are quickly and easily available to other members of the public online. Sometimes, inaccessible websites and mobile apps can keep people with disabilities from joining or fully participating in civic or other community events like town meetings or programs at their child’s school.

This rule will help make sure people with disabilities have access to state and local governments’ services, programs, and activities available on websites and mobile apps. This rule will also provide state and local governments with more clarity about what they have to do to comply with the ADA.

Highlights of the Requirements in the Rule

The rule’s requirements for making web content and mobile apps accessible are highlighted below. The full rule explains these requirements in more detail.

Requirement: The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Version 2.1, Level AA is the technical standard for state and local governments’ web content and mobile apps.

This rule sets a specific technical standard that state and local governments must follow to meet their existing obligations under Title II of the ADA for web and mobile app accessibility.

WCAG, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines , is a set of guidelines that say what is needed for web accessibility, such as requirements for captions for videos. WCAG is developed by the World Wide Web Consortium .

You can find more information about why the Department picked WCAG 2.1, Level AA as the technical standard for state and local governments’ web content and mobile apps in the rule in the section of the appendix called “Technical Standard—WCAG 2.1 Level AA.”

A technical standard says specifically what is needed for something to be accessible. For example, the existing ADA Standards for Accessible Design are technical standards that say what is needed for a building to be physically accessible under the ADA, such as how wide a door must be or how steep a ramp can be.

Requirement: State and local governments’ web content usually needs to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

The rule applies to web content that a state or local government provides or makes available. This includes when a state or local government has an arrangement with someone else who provides or makes available web content for them.

• Example: If a county web page lists the addresses and hours of operation for all county parks, that web page must meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA even if a local web design company made the web page and updates it for the county.

“Web content” is defined as the information and experiences available on the web, like text, images, sound, videos, and documents. You can find more information about how the Department defines “web content” in the rule in the section of the appendix called “Definitions.”

Requirement: State and local governments’ mobile apps usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA

The rule applies to mobile apps that a state or local government provides or makes available. This includes when a state or local government has an arrangement with someone else who provides or makes available a mobile app for them.

• Example: If a city lets people pay for public parking using a mobile app, that mobile app must meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA even if the app is run by a private company.

Mobile apps are software applications that are downloaded and designed to run on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. You can find more information about how the Department defines mobile apps in the rule in the section of the appendix called “Definitions.”

Yes, this rule does not stop a state or local government from using designs, methods, or techniques as alternatives to WCAG 2.1, Level AA if the state or local government can prove the alternatives provide the same or more accessibility and usability. The rule refers to this as “equivalent facilitation.” The rule allows this so that state and local governments can have some flexibility, while also making sure that people with disabilities still have equal access to state and local government web content and mobile apps.

• Example: There may be new web accessibility standards that are developed in the future, such as WCAG Version 3.0. Under this rule, a state parks department would probably be allowed to create a new mobile app for campground reservations that meets a future standard if the standard provides the same or more accessibility and usability than WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

Exceptions: In limited situations, some kinds of web content and content in mobile apps do not have to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

It is important that state and local governments can prioritize so they can choose the most important content—like current or commonly used information— to make accessible to people with disabilities quickly.

There are limited exceptions for some kinds of content that are not as frequently used or that may be particularly hard for state and local governments to address right away.

If an exception applies to certain content, it means that content would not have to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

In the next section, we describe the exceptions and provide examples of how they might apply. We also give examples of when the exceptions would not apply.

Under the current ADA rules, state and local governments must provide individuals with disabilities with effective communication, reasonable modifications, and an equal opportunity to participate in or benefit from their services, programs, and activities. So even when web content or content in mobile apps does not have to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, a state or local government would likely still need to provide the content to a person with a disability who needs it in a format that is accessible to them.

Summary of the Exceptions

1. archived web content.

State and local governments’ websites often include a lot of content that is not currently used. This information may be outdated, not needed, or repeated somewhere else. Sometimes, this information is archived on the website.

Web content that meets all four of the following points would not need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA:

• The content was created before the date the state or local government must comply with this rule, or reproduces paper documents or the contents of other physical media (audiotapes, film negatives, and CD-ROMs for example) that were created before the government must comply with this rule, AND
• The content is kept only for reference, research, or recordkeeping, AND
• The content is kept in a special area for archived content, AND
• The content has not been changed since it was archived.

Example: A water quality report from 1998 that a state has stored in an “archive” section of its website and has not updated would probably fall under the exception. The exception would also probably apply to handwritten research notes or photos that go with the 1998 water quality report that the state scans and posts to its website in the archive section.

The exception does not apply unless all four points are present. If any point is missing, the content generally must meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA unless another exception applies.

Example: City council meeting minutes created after the date the city must comply with this rule would not fall under the exception even if they are posted in the “archive” section of the city’s website. The meeting minutes would probably have to comply with WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because this content was created after the time the city had to comply with this rule.

Example: A spreadsheet of 2021 COVID-19 statistics posted in the “archive” section of a county health department’s website would probably not fall under the exception if the spreadsheet is later edited and reposted in the archive. The exception would probably not apply, and the spreadsheet would probably have to comply with WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because the content was changed after it was first posted in the archive.

Example: A PDF document that includes a current map of a county park that is based on data collected after the county was required to comply with this rule would probably not fall under the exception even if the document is posted in the “archive” section of the county’s website. The PDF provides current information about the park. The exception would probably not apply, and the PDF would probably have to comply with WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because the content is not kept only for reference, research, or recordkeeping.

What the exception does not change

Under the current ADA rules, state and local governments have to provide individuals with disabilities with effective communication , reasonable modifications , and an equal opportunity to participate in or benefit from their services, programs, and activities.

• Example:  If a person with a hearing disability requests access to a city’s video that is archived, one way that the city could provide effective communication to the person is by adding captions to the video and sharing a copy of the captioned video file with the person.

2. Preexisting conventional electronic documents

Some state and local governments have a lot of old documents, like PDFs, on their website. It can sometimes be hard to make these documents meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

Documents that meet both of the following points usually do not need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, except in some situations:

• The documents are word processing, presentation, PDF, or spreadsheet files; AND
• They were available on the state or local government’s website or mobile app before the date the state or local government must comply with this rule.

Example: This exception would probably apply to a PDF flyer for a Thanksgiving Day parade posted on a town’s website in 2018, or a Microsoft Word version of a sample ballot for a school board election posted on a school district’s website in 2014.

The exception does not apply unless both points are present. Where either point is missing, the document generally needs to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

Example: After the date a town has to comply with the rule, it posts a PowerPoint presentation that will be used in an upcoming town council meeting. The presentation would not fall under the exception, and it would probably have to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because it was posted after the rule’s compliance date.

Example: After the date a city has to comply with the rule, it updates a Microsoft Word document that was first posted on its website in 2020 to include the city’s new contact information. The updated document would not qualify for the exception anymore, and it would probably have to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

When the exception does not apply: Documents that are currently being used to apply for, access, or participate in a state or local government’s services, programs, or activities do not fall under the exception even if the documents were posted before the date the government has to comply with the rule.

• Example: A state posted a PDF version of a business license application on its website in 2020. Members of the public still use that PDF to apply for a business license after the date the state has to comply with the rule. The exception would not apply to the application and it would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

3. Content posted by a third party where the third party is not posting due to contractual, licensing, or other arrangements with a public entity

Third parties sometimes post content on state and local governments’ websites or mobile apps. Third parties are members of the public or others who are not controlled by or acting for state or local governments. The state or local government may not be able to change the content third parties post.

Content that is posted by third parties on a state or local government’s website or mobile app would not need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

• Example: A message that a member of the public posts on a town’s online message board would probably fall under the exception.

This exception only applies to content posted by a third party. Content that is not posted by a third party usually needs to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA. This includes:

• Example: Many state or local governments post content on their websites that is developed by an outside technology company, like calendars, scheduling tools, maps, reservations systems, and payment systems. This content would not fall under the exception, and it would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because it is posted by the state or local government.
• Example: If a state or local government uses a company to design, manage, or update its website, the content the company posts for the government would not fall under the exception, and it would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.
• Example: If the state or local government has a message board platform on its website, that platform would not fall under the exception, and it would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because the message board was added to the website by the state or local government. However, the exception would probably apply to posts by third parties on that platform.

Under the current ADA rules, state and local governments must provide individuals with disabilities with effective communication , reasonable modifications , and an equal opportunity to participate in or benefit from their services, programs, and activities.

• Example: If a person with a disability is a party to a state court case, and a third-party private law firm in the case submits documents to the state court’s website, the court could provide effective communication to the person with a disability by providing the documents to the person in a format that is accessible to them quickly upon request.

4. Individualized documents that are password-protected

State and local governments sometimes use password-protected websites to share documents that are for specific individuals, like a water or tax bill. It might be hard to make all of these documents accessible right away for everyone, and there might not be a person with a disability who needs access to these documents.

Documents that meet all three of the following points do not need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA:

• The documents are word processing, presentation, PDF, or spreadsheet files, AND
• The documents are about a specific person, property, or account, AND
• The documents are password-protected or otherwise secured.

Example: A PDF version of a water bill for a person’s home that is available in that person’s secure account on a city’s website would probably fall under the exception. However, the exception does not apply to the city’s website itself.

The exception does not apply unless all three points are present. If any point is missing, the content usually must meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA. Here are some examples related to a town water bill:

Example: If a person’s water bill is made available for them to view on a password-protected website as HTML content, the exception would not apply because the content is not in one of the listed document formats, and the content would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

Example: If the water company posts a PDF document on a password-protected website about an upcoming rate increase for all customers, the exception would not apply, and the document would usually need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, because the document is not about one customer’s account.

• Example: If a person with vision loss asks to access their personal and password-protected PDF town water bill, the town might provide effective communication to the person by giving them a large print version of the water bill, or a version of the water bill that meets some WCAG criteria, even though the PDF document would meet the exception.

5. Preexisting social media posts

For many state and local governments, making all of their past social media posts accessible may be impossible. There also may be very little use to making these old posts accessible because they were usually intended to provide updates about things happening at the time they were posted in the past.

For these reasons, social media posts made by a state or local government before the date the state or local government must comply with this rule do not need to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

• Example: This exception would apply to a 2017 social media post by a city’s sanitation department announcing that trash collection would be delayed due to a snowstorm.
• Example: If an individual who is blind requests access to a picture a city posted on social media in 2023, the city could provide effective communication by providing an alternative text description of the image to the individual.

If none of the exceptions apply, do state and local governments always have to make web content and content in mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA?

Usually, yes. But there are some situations where meeting WCAG 2.1, Level AA is not required:

Under the current ADA rules, state and local governments do not need to take actions that would result in a fundamental alteration or an undue burden. This is also true for this rule. Determining what is a fundamental alteration or undue burden is different from entity to entity and sometimes from one year to the next.

Other Information About Complying with the Rule

Use of conforming alternate versions.

Sometimes a state or local government tries to have two versions of the same web content or content in a mobile app: one version that is not accessible and another version that is accessible and provides all the same information and features. The second version is called a “conforming alternate version.”

Usually state and local governments should not have a main web page that is inaccessible and a separate accessible version of the same content, because people with disabilities should get equal access to that content on the same page.

Under the rule, state and local governments may use conforming alternate versions as an alternative to inaccessible content only in very limited circumstances. State and local governments are allowed to do this only when there is a technical or legal limitation that prevents inaccessible web content or mobile apps from being made accessible.

For more information about conforming alternate versions and when they are allowed, see the final rule in the section of the appendix called “§ 35.202 Conforming Alternate Versions.”

Sometimes an individual with a disability may not be able to access a state or local government’s web content or mobile apps even if they meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA. If this happens, the state or local government is not required to make more changes to its web content or mobile apps that meet the technical requirement, but the government must still satisfy its other obligations under the ADA to provide individuals with disabilities with effective communication , reasonable modifications , and an equal opportunity to participate in or benefit from their services, programs, and activities. The state or local government must figure out on a case-by-case basis how best to meet the needs of the individual with a disability.

• Example: If a person’s disability stops them from accessing a county's mobile app that meets WCAG 2.1, Level AA to buy tickets to the county's annual fair, the county needs to provide an alternative way for the person to purchase tickets.

What Happens If a State or Local Government Has Failed to Meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA in a Minor Way?

In some limited situations, state and local governments may be able to show that their web content or mobile apps do not meet WCAG Version 2.1, Level AA in a way that is so minor that it would not change a person with a disability’s access to the content or mobile app. If the state or local government can show that, then they are not violating the rule.

State and local governments cannot use this part of the rule to avoid trying to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA. If a state or local government’s web content does not fully meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA, there are many things the government would have to prove to show that they did not violate the rule.

Example that violates the rule: A state’s online renewal form does not meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.  Because of that, a person with a manual dexterity disability may need to spend a lot more time to renew their professional license online than someone without a disability. This person might also need to get help from someone who does not have a disability, give personal information to someone else, or go through a much harder and frustrating process than someone without a disability.  Even if this person with a disability could ultimately renew their license online, the state would violate the rule.

Example that meets the rule: A state’s web page with information about a park has text with a color contrast ratio that is 4.45:1. WCAG 2.1, Level AA requires a color contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for this text. It can be hard for some people with vision disabilities to see text on a web page if there is not enough contrast between the color of the text and the background color.  But that very small difference in color contrast ratio probably would not change whether most people with vision disabilities could read the text on the website and access the information about the park. If the state can prove the difference in color contrast is so small that it would not make it harder for people with disabilities to access the information about the park, the state would not violate the rule.

How Long State and Local Governments Have to Comply with the Rule

State and local governments must make sure that their web content and mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA within two or three years of when the rule is published, depending on their population.

You can find more information about why the Department is requiring compliance with this timeline in the rule in the section of the appendix called “Requirements by Entity Size.”

After this time, state and local governments must continue to make sure their web content and mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA.

A school district is not a special district government. If it is a city school district, it would use the population of the city to know when to comply. If it is a county school district, it would use the population of the county. If it is an independent school district, it would use the population estimate in the most recent Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates .

To figure out the date, you have to know the population of your state or local government. For most governments, this is a number you can find in the 2020 data from the U.S. Census Bureau . For smaller parts of a larger government that do not have a population listed there, like a city police department or a city library, you can look at the population of the larger government they are part of, like the city the runs the police department and library in this example.

Former Marine Sentenced For Travel With Intent To Engage In Criminal Sexual Activity

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that Bryan Todd Richardson II, age 25, of Wyoming, Ohio, was sentenced to 120 months in prison each for two counts of Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Activity and 120 months in prison for one count of Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Activity.  The terms of imprisonment on all counts shall be served concurrently.  Richardson will also be required to register as a Sex Offender.

The charges arose from investigations by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Okmulgee Police Department.

On September 27, 2022, Richardson pleaded guilty to a superseding Indictment of two counts of Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Activity and one count of Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Activity.  According to investigators, Richardson, a Marine stationed in North Carolina, cultivated an online relationship with a fourteen-year-old child in the state of Oklahoma for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct. Richardson traveled to Oklahoma in May of 2020, and again in June of 2021, both times engaging in illegal sexual activity with the minor. After the June incident, Richardson transported the minor across state lines and later returned the victim to Oklahoma.

The Honorable Keith Starrett, U.S. District Judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, sitting by assignment, presided over the hearings in Muskogee.  Richardson was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve a non-paroleable sentence of incarceration.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. Improvements but love the wallpaper and widgets

Dear ThemePack team, Hello! I love this game so much, but there are some big improvements. I would suggest you read this before installing the game. All anybody wants is some new anesthetic or emo wallpaper. But they can’t do that if they have to watch boring ads like 4 times to get enough gems to watch another ad to actually get the wallpaper. I also suggest that you take off the whole gem thing and do only one ad. Overall the game is awesome. And i am surprised somebody could make something as good as this. The game has all the wallpapers you could ever want. Even ones for holidays and season. It is so creative. Thank you for making this game it has really improved my selection in wallpapers. One other thing. You know when you open the app and what the front page looks like? It says that yo have to pay 15 dollars a month for the extreme wallpapers. And that tiny little X is not very noticeable. So people will think they have to pay 15 bucks. Nobody wants that . I suggest you change the front part to the actual normal game and put a box in the corner for buying the extreme wallpapers. Because you don’t want people getting a game seeing that it is 15 dollars and just abandon the game forever and not play it. Thank you for reading!

Amazing! Better than other theme apps!

I give theme pack 5 stars because it has sooo many adorable wallpapers, icons, and widgets for each style! For example, anime, kawaii,aesthetic, and even more styles suitable for everyone and all genders! But what really makes Themepack stand out is that there is a subscription to unlock everything you want, you can also get the subscription for free, but if you don’t want to buy it you can pay diamonds. Diamonds are the pink diamond-shaped currency that you can get from watching adds, that gives you 75, sharing the game with friends, that gives you 25 and you can do it 2 times, daily reward, that gives you 30! so basically, the diamonds are free and you use them to get things you want on ThemePack without a subscription! I really like everything on theme pack, but I really like how they give you an option to get things for free without an subscription! I really want Themepack to add video games In the icon section, such as roblox, Minecraft, Avikin life, etc Thanks for reading!

It’s amazing but…..

So I downloaded this theme pack thinking I wouldn’t have to watch any ads to unlock the icons widgets and wallpapers. The themes are so cute but there’s one problem. I hate that the fact that you have to watch so many ads to unlock the icons and it also said you have to get 300 diamonds and I’ve already watched five videos to get those diamonds and it says you can either get VIP to but I don’t like that it’s a little bit too expensive because $15 a month seems way too over price just for one theme pack. I love the themes and especially the Stranger Things and stitch one but it’s just like I don’t like that you have to watch 100 videos just to get like three icons or widgets or wallpapers, so please can you fix this because like other apps don’t include that and you can get normal seems without having thing to watch a add and I know that these icons widgets and wallpapers don’t have to include these ads in VIP for $50 a month that’s just way too over price. I hope you read this because everybody seems like they want to have it fixed and it’s a real problem because who wants to sit there and watch 1 billion ads just to get one single theme. So that’s why I think it’s amazing but just the ads mess it up really bad so please fix that and thank you for reading this.
