Would you take your two year old o this dune ride?! I know the website says it's allowed, but is it a good idea? :)
If you sit towards the front it's less hilly. But keep in mind it's still a bumpy ride. Probably holding them in your lap with the seatbelt across would be best. But the drivers are all wonderful and will advise you on best seating. Definitely go!

My family just got done with our fourth trip in the dune rides, and it doesn't lose much with repetition. It's always fun, a little tiring and informative. When you leave, you'll feel more connected to the area, to history and to the importance of ecological conservation, and sometimes you'll be a bit sunburned, wind burned and sandy, as well. Each guide has a slightly different spiel, but they all punctuate their history and ecology lessons with well-timed bad jokes. They all drive like pros, but they shake things up just enough for newbies to wonder, "Did he really mean to hit that turn so hard?" The answer is always yes. They have been doing this since 1954. They're extremely well trained, and while there's some variation in the courses, they all have some standard stuff - a few close spots where the trees will tickle the riders on the outside, several areas where they fishtail and one giant hill where they fly down at top speed. What's fascinating for most people is learning about the shifting sands that buried the once thriving town of Singapore, the shocking result of cutting down the trees and the difference between the desert-like upper areas and the "dead dunes" below, with their lush forest. Be sure to bring cash to tip the driver (though they can charge your card for cash) and bring water and sunscreen. They have a nice gift shop with postcards and souvenirs, as well. It's $20 for adults, $11 for kids for a 40-minute ride, which is more than reasonable. Be sure to book at least a day or two ahead. They have an online booking system that works smoothly.
Each tour stops on one of the high dunes to allow people to climb out and explore.
The forest below is a stark contrast to the desert above.
This was so fun! The driver was funny, knowledgeable and entertaining. The ride was like a roller coaster flying through the sand up and down giant sand dunes. It was cool to hear the story of how the company started and that the original owner purchased all the land for a minimal price but started a super cool company. We stopped at the top of a dune for some photos and incredible views. It was neat to learn about the history of the land and the town of Singapore Michigan that was buried under the dunes. I can't wait to go back and ride again. We had a blast!
In addition to being a great, fun and educational ride not just for the kids but for us parents, I'm writing this review because of the AWESOME driver and guide Scott. He was so much fun to listen to and really made the trip special for the kids. Great sense of humor and taught us lots of things about the gorgeous dunes that we didn't know.
This was a super fun experience! It was a good mix of thrill ride and informative tour. We sped and drifted over the dunes (which was my favorite part) but we also stopped pretty frequently, which is when our driver shared information with us about the area. He seemed really knowledgeable. We were also able to get out at one of the stops to explore, enjoy the view, and take some great photos. This was a unique experience and I highly recommend it!
If you are looking for a different experience in Michigan, this is the place to come too! Frosty was our driver and there were 12 of us ranging from 2 years old to 70. Everyone had a great time, great scenic views! You stop to take pictures, you can see some wildlife as well. The ride is fun! They speed up and you can catch some air so it's entertaining. We sat in the back so videos and pics came out great! Ticket prices were reasonable. I wish they had single or 4 seater ATVs, but they just have the bigger jeeps.
Yes to everything about this adventure! The beautiful views, the subtle comedy from the driver. The fact that it feels like I'm on a free-falling roller coaster, 350 miles above the lake line. I don't know why I waited 6 years to try this adventure, but I'm mad at myself for waiting so long! For $20 a person and 45 minutes, you go from being on top of the world, to slip sliding in an old schunner down a dune. It was actually quite informative and told me a lot about the area. Learning about the buried town under the dune I was standing on, blew my mind. And how the dunes were formed etc. if you like a quick history lesson and a lot of fun, you HAVE to go on this!

Absolutely worth every minute! We come every year! The ride was excellent and our tour guide Nate rocked. Definitely book a trip if ever in Saugatuck, Michigan!
It's a dune schooner, not a dune buggy. The schooner seats about 20. It's a fun fast ride, but it's more than that. You get a rollercoaster on sand, then add in some history, ecology and geography lessons plus sight gags and a little stand-up comedy. You'll make one stop of about 20 minutes at the top of the highest dune. The driver, Ian, was happy to talk about the evolving terrain, the vehicle, the Tigers vs. the White Sox, and just about anything else. Oh yeah. Sit up front!
This was a highlight of our vacation!!! It was so much fun and actually educational. Brad was amazing! Definitely worth tipping! Our five kids couldn't stop talking about it!!!! Thanks Brad!
Hell yeah!!! So much fun! Our driver and tour guide was Joel, he was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Worth the trip

Michigan is full of charming small cities and towns and two of them have just been recognized nationally, ranking in a list of the best small towns in the Midwest.
Both Traverse City and Petoskey rank at numbers eight and four, respectively, in USA Today’s 10Best list for Best of the Midwest: Top 10 Small Towns to Visit .
“Traverse City showcases the beauty of Lake Michigan and the wilderness that surrounds it,” USA Today wrote. “Be sure to see the Sleeping Bear Dunes along the lake, taste the famous wines produced here, and enjoy the flavorful cherries that put the town on the map in the first place. There are outdoor adventures to be had throughout the year, as a little bit of snow doesn’t stop the locals from getting out and having fun.”
Of Petoskey, it wrote: “The northern reaches of Lower Michigan are renowned for their abundant natural beauty, and Petoskey is no exception. During the late afternoon, visitors can stroll along the aptly named Sunset Park and bask in the beauty of Lake Michigan amidst the golden glow of twilight, while daylight hours bring the opportunity to explore Bear River Valley Recreation Area, a natural feature that’s rife with rapids.”

Enjoyed our tour of the dunes. Nate was a great guide and we loved His humor and the info he shared on the history and ever changing status of the dunes. My daughter failed to heed the warning to secure all hats, But the Saugaturck Dune Rides team went above and beyond to locate and return her hat before we ended the tour.
