The first time I saw IT Cosmetics' CC+ Cream on someone up close, I was pretty much mesmerized. My coworker had come into work one day looking suspiciously glowy (her skin was radiant even under fluorescent lighting), and when she told me that this CC cream was the only product she was wearing, I was interested, to say the least.

And it's not just me. This CC cream has a devoted cult following thanks to its ability to offer coverage (and sun protection!) without the heavy, cakey feel. Since I'm always on the hunt for ways to achieve even, dewy skin, I was all for trying it. But did it live up to the hype? Read on for my review.

Best for: Normal to dry skin (oily-skinned folks could use it too, but there’s also an oil-free option )

About the Brand: Founded in 2008, IT Cosmetics is a beauty brand founded by former news anchor Jamie Kern Lima. The company first gained popularity on the QVC home shopping channel before being acquired by L'Oréal in 2016.

About My Skin: Normal with minimal breakouts

In terms of my skin, I'd consider myself pretty lucky. My skin type is normal—not super dry or oily—and breakouts are a rare occurrence for me. I’m also pretty lazy and don’t do much by way of makeup or even skincare. On a regular day, I can’t be bothered to do much more than wear a little moisturizer and sunscreen . When I do wear makeup, I like to use just enough to even out my skin tone without making it totally obvious that I’m wearing anything in the first place. Given this, from what I’d seen, IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream seemed like it might be a great fit for my daily routine.

Ingredients: Skin-friendly

One of the things I liked most about this product is its formula. Packed with good-for-the-skin ingredients like hyaluronic acid , niacinamide , and collagen, it felt like an extra dose of skincare and hydration in my makeup, which I always appreciate.

This product also has broad-spectrum mineral SPF 50 protection, thanks to zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. While it definitely won’t replace my sunscreen (shoutout to Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen ) it’s nice to know that there’s an extra layer of built-in protection.

Speaking of built-in ingredients, this product also acts as a primer, which is nice because it eliminates an extra step (especially for someone who’s lazy like me). I think this contributed to why my skin liked it—it was hydrating but not oily and felt nourishing to my skin.

It's also worth noting that the brand offers a few other iterations of this CC cream, including one that contains light-reflective pigments for an extra glow, as well as an oil-free version for a matte finish.

Shade Range: Pretty Limited

In the past, I’ve had issues with full-coverage formulas making me look mask-like (or breaking me out completely), and CC creams not doing enough to make a difference. I’ve also had challenges accurately matching my skin tone, which has neutral, slightly golden undertones. Some foundations show up ashen, while others come off too red or make me look orange, which is less than ideal.

Color selection was definitely my biggest concern with this CC cream, which comes in 12 shades. Of those 12 shades, only three of these are for darker skin tones (the darkest shade, Deep, is also not that deep) so my choices were pretty limited.

Also, unlike other CC and BB creams , this one offers a substantial amount of coverage, so cheating the color match isn’t as easy as it is with other formulas with less pigment. I chose Rich, which ended up being a pretty decent match. I tend to do okay with more yellow foundations (Rich is formulated for people with warm yellow undertones), but like to go with more neutral foundations when available. If I leaned more cool-toned, it definitely would not have worked.

The Feel: Super lightweight

Fresh out of the bottle, this CC cream feels similar to an ordinary foundation but slightly like a serum. It isn’t thick and gloopy, though—it floats somewhere in the middle.

Overall, I really liked the feel of it because, well, I didn't feel it.

One pump covers the back of my hand and it spreads really easily over my skin. It definitely has a weightless quality, and it didn't irritate my skin at all.

The Results: Dewy skin

I didn’t need to use a lot of this product to see a major difference. For my entire face, I used a little more than a pump and applied it with a Beauty Blender (notorious for sucking up product), but still saw results.

It’s definitely buildable, too, so if you wanted more coverage, you could definitely achieve it. It also doesn’t oxidize dramatically either, though I did notice that it got a touch darker when dry—but, if anything, that actually worked better for my skin tone in the end.

The Value: Good if you don't use a ton of product

All of the good-for-skin ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and peptides, made the price point ($40 a bottle) worth it for me. Price-wise, it's comparable to other popular formulations and is even a little cheaper than other high-end CC creams I’ve tried. Ultimately, I think it’s a good price for how much you get—but also, I don't normally use a lot of product at once, so this one will likely last me a while. If I knew I'd be going through a bottle every six weeks or so, I might think otherwise.

Similar Products: You have options

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer ($47): Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer , which I also like, is pretty similar to the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream. It has built-in SPF, too, and contains macadamia and kukui seed oils, which help moisturize the skin (although this might not be ideal for someone with oily skin). The Laura Mercier option also has a better shade selection but is a touch more expensive (about $7 more).

Maybelline Dream Cover ($13): This is a popular dupe of IT's CC+ Cream and is much more affordable. This skincare-makeup hybrid is full-coverage, delivers SPF 50 protection, contains antioxidants, and clocks in at a mere $13.

Overall, I liked IT Cosmetics' CC+ Cream with SPF 50+. I would use it if I wanted to even out my skin tone or give my skin a little extra something. Ultimately, though, I was disappointed at the lack of color selection, especially for people with different undertones and deeper complexions than mine. I would recommend this to someone looking for a glowy, no-makeup-makeup look, but with the caveat that the limited color selection might not make it worth it. If the brand came out with more shades, I'd be much more likely to recommend.

I really do like IT cosmetics cc creams. I ALWAYS wear spf as I have melasma and hyperpigmentation. I bought the tan as I am normally medium neutral but was travelling. It’s an ideal size for holiday and gives a great extra layer of spf as well as fantastic coverage! You can sheer the coverage out if you want or build it up for full coverage. I’m in my 40s and don’t like heavy looking foundation anymore. But I still want coverage to cover my scars and hyperpigmentation etc. I use this as well as the illumination version and I prefer that over this one personally as I like the glow it gives. I Was getting ready the other day and forgot to put my spf on. I realised after I had put primer and foundation on. I was running late and didn’t have time to redo my entire skincare. I went out and was in the sun on and off (did try to avoid as much as I could!) and my melasma and hyperpigmentation didn’t come out at all!! I caught the sun on my arms, legs, shoulders and back, but my face and neck remained as white as the screen you’re looking at! It’s not ideal to not wear spf as well and I DON’T recommend it (just a small disclaimer!) but I have to say, this actually protects you really well. The coverage lasts all day if I set it. If I don’t then it does fade after about 5 hours. But it doesn’t look too heavy on me anyway and I have older skin with fine lines and a lot of scarring so uneven skin and skin tone. This looks great and lasts well. I do still prefer the illumination one but again only when set. Otherwise it won’t last the whole day. I’m a massive fan of bye bye under eye concealer as well. To add, I have over 100 foundations and even more concealers. I’ve been reaching for this one and my revolution cc which is a great dupe for it (apart from its only spf 30 and doesn’t have as many skincare benefits like this does) I’ve actually managed to go through 2 full size of the illumination and one of the full dice of this one. I bought the travel size for reasons above, and as I am paler in the winter it’s a great mixing shade for my lighter version and the illumination version of this. Then as I darken I add more of this until I’m just this colour. I am European skin so I only have to look at the sun and I will tan even with low spf on. For me to actually use up foundation is unheard of. So that should give you an idea.

I have normal skin, gets dry in the winter and slightly oily t zone in the summer. Both this and the illumination are perfect on my skin!

I really enjoyed this product. The shade was a little too dark for me & it also seemed to oxidize, so next time I would get it in Fair! But other than that, it made my skin look AMAZING! I live for IT Cosmetics honestly. And BeautyLish was super quick about shipping as well as the little personalized note inside.♥️😍

brilliant for hyper reactive skin

I’m going to be brutally honest so you can envision my stance. I avoided IT cosmetics for ages. I had seen iron an infomercial & made a snap decision that it was NOT as good as my luxury brands. WRONG! I also received confidence in a cleanser. I pushed them aside until w was out of my products well if you are prone to rosacea, fine lines,pink, red blotches prickly heat & or dry skin which causes ur pores to enlarge. This is THE product for you! The packaging is so perfect you can toss it in ur gym bag! Also try her serum 51

Broke me out

The small size is a great way to test this product, and I really enjoyed the formula (good coverage, looked flattering on my dry skin), but... The lightest shade was way too dark for me, and the fragrance in this product made my skin break out and itch like crazy. So if you have sensitive skin, beware.

Great coverage

I have been seeing all the hype surrounding this product and wanted to try it, but they didn't have the shade "light" available in the full size tube. I saw the sample size and remembered seeing it on one of those home shopping channels and them saying the shade medium works for many people. I decided to try the shade medium, in the trial size and was shocked to find it matched me perfectly! The coverage is amazing and I plan on buying the full size as soon as I'm nearing the end of tube. You do get a lot of product and a dab will do you! Love it

IT Cosmetics’s CC cream hits the nail with coverage and skin benefits. It offers medium to full coverage with a shine-free natural finish and is formulated with high SPF content, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants for extra moisture and anti-aging benefits. With SPF 50 (one of the highest on the list), this could double as a makeup base and sunscreen, which is what beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton sometimes does . And on top of its sun protection and hydrating ingredients, it’s made with soothing vitamin E and colloidal oatmeal. Four experts brought it up for its impressive ingredient lineup and that it works with all skin types. While full coverage, the formula is still lightweight, according to makeup artist Anabelle LaGuardia . It comes in a wide range of 24 shades.

Best less expensive CC cream

E.l.f.’s Camo CC Cream is less than a third of the IT Cosmetics’ price and was also praised by four makeup artists I spoke to. Like the above, it offers full coverage with a natural finish. The main difference is that it’s made with a lower SPF content (so you may want to wear sunscreen with this formula), and its benefits are focused on extra skin hydration. Its active ingredients are vitamin B5, tremella mushroom, and hyaluronic acid. For the price, though, this is still an excellent natural-looking, moisturizing formula. It comes in an even wider range of 60 shades.

Best for oily skin and acne-prone skin

Dermablend’s oil-free CC cream is a favorite of beauty writer and consultant Kristina Rodulfo , who has acne-prone skin and has never broken out from wearing this formula. It’s full coverage, so you only need a little bit to cover dark spots , redness, or unevenness, but it never feels cakey. It contains antioxidants like baicalin, niacinamide, vitamin E, and caffeine to defend against free radical damage and aging. Similar to the It Cosmetics formula, this has SPF 50, but it only comes in 13 shades.

Best CC cream for mature skin

For mature skin , celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg recommends Thrive Causemetics’ CC cream. He likes its patented Blur Effect technology for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. A CC cream stands for a colour correcting cream. These are either an absolute necessity or an unwanted extra step in any beauty lover’s daily routine. Our tester is a CC cream lover, falling in love with the product after pairing back her everyday make-up from a full face of foundation to just a light touch of coverage to even out skin tone and texture. And CC creams do exactly that, blurring imperfections and correcting colour through clever skin-adapting pigments that contrast on the colour wheel – green pigments combat redness, for example.

CC creams are one of the easiest products to use and, depending on the thickness of the cream, can either be applied with the fingers, as you would a moisturiser or a make-up sponge – we used the EcoTools bioblender sponge (£5, Boots.com ). Our tester applied each one in the morning and considered how they glided onto the skin, the coverage, how wore throughout the day and any skincare benefits too.

We’ve been using this CC cream for a couple of years now. And if everyone from strangers on the street to professional make-up artists stops to ask what exactly has made your skin look that good, then you know it’s got to be something special.

What makes this CC cream so great is the subtle micro light-reflecting pigments that illuminate the face, giving a dewy glow that looks fresh, healthy and natural without the use of glitter or highlighter-style shimmer. Hydrolysed collagen, peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and a handful of vitamins and antioxidants are also included, taking this CC cream into the skincare realm, providing it with great hydration and anti-ageing properties that also work to give your skin a more balanced appearance (and it has a great SPF50 protection too).

It is slightly more pigmented than some of the other options, so be sure to apply with a damp sponge for even coverage.

Essence magic all in one face cream

• Super affordable
• Adapst skin tone
• Matte finish

This isn’t strictly a CC cream, but it is an all in one formula which does include CC properties, and at £3.60 it’s a huge steal. This cream adapts to your skin tone before blurring imperfections and hydrating the skin, all while offering a tinted sheer coverage – quite impressive for just one product. At first, the cream comes out a cement grey, but don’t be alarmed. Once worked in (ideally with the fingers) the pigments release, turning into a more natural skin tone match – our tester did find it slightly orange on her very pale skin, but for anyone with a slightly warmer skin tone, this shouldn’t be a problem. Unlike most of our dewy finish options, this one is matte, lightweight and has an SPF10 included.

Chanel CC cream

• Best : For fuller coverage
• Number of shades : Seven
• Beautiful packaging
• Higher coverage without cakiness
• Moisturising

Chanel is a regular go-to for any luxury beauty lover, and it’s easy to see why. The packaging alone is beautiful, but the actual products deliver great results, and this CC cream is no exception. Not only did it correct colour, but it has a thick and creamy consistency not common among CC creams, which, when combined with the stronger pigment, delivers a higher coverage without the cakiness or cracking often associated with foundations, while still covering dark circles, pores and blemishes.

Hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient for providing moisturising and anti-ageing properties, and murunga plum, rich in vitamin C, works to give the skin a natural glow. It also has an SPF of 50, meaning it works as a great alternative to heavy make-up or foundation in the summer months. Apply with a sponge over fingers for even coverage.

Clinique superdefense CC cream

• Best : Moisturising CC cream
• Size : 40ml
• Lightweight
• Moisturises
• Evens red tones
• Only one shade

Whether you have dry skin or just need an extra boost of hydration in the morning, this CC cream from Clinique does the trick. Lightweight enough to be applied simply with the fingers, as with a regular moisturiser, this CC cream gives a light coverage for a gentle glow that soothes redness and creates a more even skin tone.

Our tester used concealer over the top on any blemishes and under-eye circles, and that was enough to look fresh-faced and glowing within minutes. As with all Clinique products, the science behind it is pretty impressive, with light scattering colour correcting optics neutralising complexion and aloe barbadensis leaf water, hyaluronic acid, trehalose and sorbitol all working to hydrate the skin and protect it against humidity. It also contains SPF30 for some everyday sun protection – of course, we would recommend adding a higher factor sunscreen spray on top in the summer. But, if going out and about, we would put this in place of our morning moisturiser. Who doesn’t love reducing their morning routine?

Erborian CC red correct

• Best : For redness
• Size : 45ml
• Great for red toned skin
• Moisturises and plumps skin

Korean skincare brand Erborian may not be a brand you’ve already heard of, but it is starting to make subtle waves in the beauty community. This CC cream is tailored towards reducing redness, meaning it uses a high amount of green pigments to colour correct, which then adjusts to your skin tone. Glycerin, tiger grass extract and vitamin E deeply moisturise and plump the skin, giving long-lasting hydration and soothing qualities. For anyone looking to subtly reduce redness, this is a great option, and it also works well under foundation, smoothing and blurring the skin in preparation for fuller coverage. It has an SPF of 25, and for anyone looking to try the brand that isn’t in need of any redness combatting, the regular CC cream is just as great (£41, Lookfantastic.com ).

Kiko Milano skin trainer CC blur

• Best : For blurring pores
• Number of shades : Four- Light, medium, neutral and dark
• Reduces appearance of pores
• Velvety texture
• Smells great too

Skin trainer is a strange name for a CC cream, or any beauty product to be honest, and although this product won’t teach your skin how to do tricks, it does reduce the appearance of pores a lot. With a velvety texture that has just a hint of colour, this is the best CC cream to use under foundation for a flawless skin texture. It blurs imperfections, spreads the light across the face for an instant glow and smooths out pores for a glass-like finish. Interestingly, it has a great smell too, so if you like to give your products a good sniff, then you won’t be disappointed. Apply with fingers over the face, focusing on any areas with visible pores, such as the nose and cheeks.

Morphe hint hint skin tint

• Best : For foundation lovers
• Great selection of shades
• Light and not cakey despite higher coverage
• Subtly evens skin tone
• Lasts all day

Anyone looking to work their way down from full foundation coverage to a barely-there au naturel look should make this Morphe skin tint their first port of call. Similar to a foundation in consistency, packaging and application (with a damp sponge), it’s lighter in texture, doesn’t cake or crease too much and has just enough coverage to subtly even out skin tone. It’s not exactly a colour corrector, as there are no colour combating pigments that work to neutralise any red, blue or purple, but it is a great option for those after an in-between of a CC cream and foundation. Water, sweat and transfer-resistant, it lasts all day and melts into the skin beautifully. And in 20 shades, there’s more variety than most CC creams.

We’re truly in love with the It Cosmetics CC cream, and while there were a great number of steady rivals, none quite gave the same illuminated, flawless finish. But, if we had to pick a very close second, then Chanel or Clinique would win a silver medal.
