Three share lead at first major of PGA Tour Champions season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Billy Andrade , Timothy O'Neal and Paul Broadhurst each shot a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead Thursday at the Regions Tradition, the first of five PGA Tour Champions majors, with defending champion Steve Stricker 1 shot back.

Joining Stricker at 68 were Ernie Els , Padraig Harrington and Ken Duke . Stricker has thrived on the Founders Course at Greystone, with two wins and two runner-up finishes in his past four appearances.

Bernhard Langer was 2 shots back after a 69 that included a rare burst of frustration from the even-keeled German. After missing a short birdie putt on the par-5 13th, Langer threw his long putter and then heaved his ball into the trees.

The 65-year-old Langer shares the PGA Tour Champions record of 45 victories with Hale Irwin . His 11 senior majors include two wins in Birmingham.

O'Neal started on the 10th hole and had a pair of eagles on the par-5 18th and second holes, with one of his two bogeys in between.

The 50-year-old is seeking his first win on the senior tour. He's coming off his best finish, tying for 10th at last week's Mitsubishi Electric Classic. O'Neal earned his card through qualifying school last fall.

Andrade had a bogey-free round, recording three straight birdies before hitting the flagstick with his approach on No. 16. The ball bounced well back but stayed on the green.

He's seeking his fourth win on the senior circuit, with the previous three all coming in 2015. Those included the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Broadhurst has two senior major titles, the 2016 Senior British Open and 2018 Senior PGA Championship. He had seven birdies and two bogeys.

David Toms , who trails only Stricker in the Schwab Cup standings, withdrew with an illness. Toms and Stephen Ames are the only players with multiple wins this year. Ames, the winner last week at TPC Sugarloaf in Georgia, opened with a 70.

Harrington wiped out his only bogey with a closing birdie. Duke made a double bogey on the par-4 third hole but started a run of three straight birdies on No. 13. Els had only one bogey.

Steve Stricker, Charles Schwab Cup, Champions Tour

Steve Stricker will not attend this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club. He withdrew from the event to be with his father, Bob Stricker, who was admitted to the hospital on Monday.

Stricker released a statement after he decided to skip the event per the Champions Tour.

“Unfortunately, I will be withdrawing from this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship,” he wrote. “I was eagerly looking forward to competing in this event and capping off this season, which has been an incredibly special one for me, but a personal emergency has come up that requires me to stay home.”

“My father was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon. He is currently receiving care, and it is important that I am here for my family during this challenging time.”

Being the man Stricker is, he openly discussed what happened and apologized to everyone involved for missing this week’s event.

“I understand that my absence is disappointing, and I sincerely apologize to the PGA Tour Champions staff, volunteers, fellow players, fans, and title sponsor Charles Schwab,” Stricker wrote.

“While it saddens me that I will not be able to compete in Phoenix this week, family must always come first, and I hope you can understand my decision to prioritize my father’s well-being during this difficult time.”

Steve Stricker, Charles Schwab Cup, Champions Tour

Stricker has long since been one of the more well-liked players on both the PGA and Champions Tour. That notion was once again reaffirmed as Stricker took time to thank all of those who have worked tirelessly this year to put on a season full of great events, despite the troubling times.

“I would like to express my gratitude for the tireless efforts of the PGA TOUR Champions staff, tournament directors, and sponsors this season, who have provided us with the opportunity to participate in a season-long race that has been nothing short of exceptional,” Stricker wrote. “I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout the season.”

He also extended his best wishes to the men playing in the event.

“Finally, I want to extend my best wishes to all the players playing in the season finale. I will be following the event from afar, cheering for my friends and fellow competitors,” Stricker announced. “I appreciate your understanding and support during this time and look forward to seeing everyone again soon.”

Thankfully, he didn’t even need to compete this week. Stricker already clinched the season-long championship , amassing over $4 million along the way.

Stricker won six times on the season and had five runner-up finishes.

With those results, he holds such a significant lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings no one can catch him.

The Wisconsin native had one of the most dominant runs the Champions Tour has ever seen. Among those six wins, three were major championships. He had 55 straight rounds of par or better to beat Tiger Woods’ long-standing record of 52.

He now has 17 Champions Tour wins since joining the league in 2017. The 55-year-old also tallied 12 PGA Tour victories in his career.

We at SB Nation wish Steve and his father well.

Ricardo Gonzalez fends off Thomas Bjørn to capture first PGA Tour Champions title in Morocco

A fter chipping into the water and bogeying the par-5 12th, Ricardo Gonzalez faced a two-shot deficit to former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn , as his chances at victory continued to slip away.

But then, Gonzalez, who has 28 career professional victories, completely turned the tide of the Trophy Hassan II—the annual PGA Tour Champions event held in Morocco. He reeled off four straight birdies, vaulting from 6-under to 10-under in the blink of an eye, and stole the trophy away from Bjørn, who ultimately finished one stroke behind.

“I worked so much to be here, and this is my trophy. I like that,” Gonzalez said on Golf Channel afterward.

Indeed, the 54-year-old Argentine worked hard on the back nine to right the ship.

“You’ve got to take your hat off for people that do that,” Bjørn said of Gonzalez’s turnaround.

“That thing on 12 would have put a lot of people off and kind of limped in from there, but he didn’t. He regrouped and made those birdies that he needed to do.”

Gonzalez’s victory marks the first time he triumphed in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, as he has now earned a spot in each of the five senior majors in 2024. The win completely changes the course of his career.

“I’m feeling so good, so good, so big, and now playing the tour everybody likes to play, no?” Gonzalez added.

“Everybody likes to play in the Champions Tour, and I am one of the lucky men to get in there.”

The Argentine’s birdie barrage began on the par-4 13th, which measures 398 yards. He then birdied the tricky 198-yard par-3 14th and rolled in a side-winding birdie putt from almost 30 feet at the par-4 15th.

But the shot of the day came at the par-4 16th, where Gonzalez stuck his approach to within four feet. That happened while Bjorn and fellow playing partner Y.E. Yang were in trouble off the tee.

Gonzalez made birdie at 16, while Bjørn and Yang saved par. Still, Gonzalez walked off the 16th tee with a two-shot lead.

And yet, it almost completely unraveled at the drivable, par-4 17th.

With the honor on the tee, Gonzalez hit an iron, and it was easily one of his worst swings of the day. The pressure was starting to get to him as his ball came to rest in the woods.

Meanwhile, Bjørn, sensing an opening, smacked a driver onto the putting surface, all but guaranteeing a birdie.

Back in the trees, Gonzalez punched his second shot into the greenside bunker short and right of the green, and faced an outside chance of saving par. The pin placement was front right, leaving him with not much green to work with. The putting surface also sloped severely away from him about 12 feet beyond the hole, creating little margin for error.

Gonzalez then hit his bunker shot 10 feet beyond the pin, and drained his comebacker for par. It went right in the center of the hole, eliciting a major fist pump from Gonzalez.

Each member of the final group then made par at the last, a par-5.

“When somebody holes a putt [as he did on] 14, 15, 16, and 17, then you deserve to win,” Bjørn said of Gonzalez’s putting.

“Fair credit to Ricardo; it’s life-changing for him. So I’m happy for him, disappointed that I couldn’t get it done, but hey, we go again.”

Steve stricker wds from schwab cup finale because of family emergency.

  • Brentley Romine ,
  • Brentley Romine

Steve Stricker has already clinched this year’s Charles Schwab Cup, the PGA Tour Champions’ season-long points race.

However, Stricker announced Wednesday afternoon that he will not compete in this week’s season finale, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, because of a family emergency, which forced Stricker to withdraw from the 36-player event at Phoenix Country Club. Stricker’s father, Bob, was admitted to the hospital on Monday.

“I was eagerly looking forward to this competing in this event and capping off this season, which has been an incredibly special one for me, but a personal emergency has come up that requires me to stay home,” Stricker said. “My father was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon. He is currently receiving care and it is important that I am here for my family during this challenging time.”

Stricker won six times, including three majors, and posted five runners-up in 16 starts this season while losing to just 41 total players. He also broke Tiger Woods’ record across all PGA Tour-sanctioned tours by shooting 55 straight rounds of par or better this season.

He didn’t compete in last week’s TimberTech Championship, but with $3,986,063 in earnings collected this season, Stricker’s participation in the no-cut Schwab Cup finale would’ve made him the first player in tour history to go over the $4 million mark.

He’ll have to settle for his first Schwab Cup title, as no other player can mathematically catch him in Phoenix.

“I understand that my absence is disappointing, and I sincerely apologize to the PGA Tour Champions staff, volunteers, fellow players, fans, and title sponsor Charles Schwab,” Stricker said. “While it saddens me that I will not be able to compete in Phoenix this week, family must always come first, and I hope you can understand my decision to prioritize my father’s well-being during this difficult time. I would like to express my gratitude for the tireless efforts of the PGA Tour Champions staff, tournament directors, and sponsors this season, who have provided us with the opportunity to participate in a season-long race that has been nothing short of exceptional. I am truly grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout the season.

“Finally, I want to extend my best wishes to all the players playing in the season finale. I will be following the event from afar, cheering for my friends and fellow competitors. I appreciate your understanding and support during this time and look forward to seeing everyone again soon.”

2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the corales puntacana championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

alex-noren-pga-usatsi.jpg

The seventh PGA Tour iteration of the Corales Puntacana Championship will begin on Thursday at Corales Golf Club in the Dominican Republic. The first two years of the event were played as Web.com Tour tournaments, but it was elevated to the PGA Tour beginning in 2018. Defending champion Matt Wallace is not in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship field, but Nicolai Hojgaard is returning after a runner-up finish last year. Hojgaard turned heads at the Masters last week when he was briefly tied for the lead in the third round.

However, Alex Noren is the 12-1 favorite in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds, followed by Hojgaard (14-1) and Billy Horschel (20-1). There are only four golfers listed inside of 30-1 on the PGA odds board, so are there any longshots you should target with your 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship bets? Before locking in your 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Corales Puntacana Championship 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship: Noren, who is the favorite has finished inside the top 20 in four straight PGA tournaments, struggles this week and barely cracks the top five. Noren played in his first PGA Tour event in 2008, and he has played in 171 PGA tournaments overall. However, he is still seeking his first victory, so it is difficult to justify his position as the favorite on the odds board this week.

Noren has struggled with his driver this season, ranked outside the top 100 in total driving and driving distance. He also sits outside the top 150 on the PGA Tour in putting average and one-putt percentage, so he would need to make drastic improvements during all four rounds this week. While this is a weaker field due to the RBC Heritage, the model has identified better golfers to back in the Dominican Republic.

Another surprise: Victor Perez, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The Frenchman finished inside the top 15 at the PGA Championship last year before making the cut at the Open Championship during a successful 2023 season.

Perez has seven professional wins, including three on the European Tour, and he is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory. The 31-year-old finished T3 in the Puerto Rico Open last month before cracking the top 20 at the Texas Children's Houston Open. He has proven he can beat up on weak fields and he ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage (71.8), making him an excellent longshot pick this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship picks

The model is also targeting five other golfers with odds of 30-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world?
