Trek Cronus CX Pro Cyclo cross bike review

The Cronus's lightweight carbon frame features Trek's usual chunky tubing, giving a stiff and responsive ride able to take on even the toughest cyclo cross course.

However, to cater for the Great British weather and the conditions that come with it, a more aggressively treaded tyre would be better and is probably a necessary upgrade.

You can trust Cycling Weekly. Our team of experts put in hard miles testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

As part of Trek's Gary Fisher collection the CX Pro is the ?cheaper build option in the Cronus stable, which is its top cross range. With two bikes in both the entry level and the mid-range, Trek's cyclo-cross family is one of the largest in the market.

With Shimano 105 groupset, Avid Shorty 6 cantilever brakes and Bontrager finishing kit all being reliable but not top of the range, it shows that the majority of the £2,000 price tag has gone into the well-developed carbon frame.

Featuring internal ?cable routing, brake and cable adjusters at the front end, a front brake hanger that prevents brake judder, it's the taking care of these finer details that sets the Cronus apart from its counterparts.

The Cronus has the biggest bottom bracket on the market - Trek's own BB90 standard. Paired with the enormous tubing, this gives a super-stiff ride, allowing a clean transfer of power from the pedals to the ground, even in the toughest of conditions.

However, the downfall of this chunky tubing came when I went to shoulder the bike. Running with a cross bike on your shoulder is never a comfortable experience but the thickness of the down tube gave already fatigued arms something extra to scream about.

That said, the flattened top tube sat perfectly on tired shoulders and made for an easy pick-up as I hurdled ?the barriers.

The geometry of the Cronus allows for an upright ride, giving great control and stability, though it lacks the whippiness some cross riders may like, especially on those twisty courses.

The Trek's ability to take bottle cages and mudguards means it's great to turn into a year-round bike for on or off-road, longer rides, and isn't just for those diehard cross racers.

Altogether, the Cronus CX Pro offers an awesome frame kitted out with functional spec which gives an all-round solid ride for either racing or just bombing round your local trails.

Pro Bike Check: Lucinda Brand rides a Trek Boone CX bike with custom offset fork

Lucinda Brand came to the start line of the 2022 Cyclocross World Championships as the defending champ. Marianne Vos was not far from where she stood, her compatriot and closest threat to keeping the rainbow jersey.

Marianne Vos CX bike Vos and Brand battle

The pair of Vos and Brand would do battle over the 55-minute race, throwing punches (metaphorically) when they could and hanging on for blistering attacks. In the end, Vos unleashed a well-timed sprint and captured the jersey and a record eighth World Championship title.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lucinda Brand (@lucinda_brand)

Lucinda Brand had a tremendous season, winning the World Cup overall, the European Championships, never losing a race in the Super Prestige or X2O Trophy series. She was an unstoppable force, no matter what the conditions. Lucindas’ success comes from hard work, determination, and a tightknit support team.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone name sticker

Brands’ weapon of choice for the 2021-2022 season is the newly updated Trek Boone . Her bike shares part of that success; finely tuned, every detail pored over and perfectly torqued in place. The team at Trek revisited the tube shapes, ISO Speed decoupler, and tire clearance to make this bike even more of a race rocket.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone headtube

Upon chatting with the team from Baloise Trek Lions, we learn some incredible custom details about Lucindas’ bike that may lead to future production tweaks for the next year’s Boone. For the Baloise Trek Lions team (and other factory athletes), they have the option to run a different offset fork than one that comes standard on the Trek Boone.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone Bontrager XXX Stem and custom badge

The different rake fork is only an option for sizes 52cm and down. The new 50mm offset fork (differing from the 45mm spec) gives the bike better handling at speed and helps the front end stay stable in twisty high-speed steering features.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone drivetrain

The attempt is to get the bike to feel as neutral as possible and have a little “fighting against the rider.” This neutrality helps especially for super sandy and muddy tracks, allowing the rider to stay in the center of the bike and giving the bike freedom to move when needed.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone shifter setup and badge Euro Champ

The 50mm offset helps also helps with toe overlap but allows for a solid front center groove better for slower speed steering.

As for components; the Baloise Trek Lions goes with full SRAM Red 12 speed eTap builds for everyone on the team. For Saturday’s World Championship race, Lucinda ran a 38T front chainring on her SRAM Red crankset and a 10-33T SRAM Force cassette.

trek cyclocross rad

The wheels are Bontrager’s newest (and only) carbon tubular race wheel — Aeolus RSL 37. Some of the riders for Baloise Trek Lions are on Challenge and others on Dugast. Lucinda raced on Dugast 32mm Typhoon tires; our photo bike has a Rhinos — possibly just for cleaning.

Fun fact — 13 of the 18 medals in the 2022 World Championships were won on Dugast Typhoon tires!

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone Bontrager Saddle

The Baloise Trek Lions Team can choose from many Bontrager saddles; Lucina opts for the Bontrager Aeolus (a super narrow looking one — possibly a 135mm size that’s not yet available to the public). We’re guessing this is the same saddle on her road setup with Trek-Segafredo. It’s an excellent saddle for easy hip movement and delivers a powerful locked-in position on the bike.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone cockpit and shifter SRAM

The cock-pit for Lucinda Brands Trek Boone is relatively neutral. She runs a 400mm Bontrager Pro IsoCore carbon bar. The IsoCore offers some extra padding and a relatively short and shallow reach, pair that with the SRAM Red Etap levers, and this is a sharp steering machine.

Lucinda Brands' Trek Boone lightweight seat mast

Lucinda has a custom European Champion Bontrager Blendr mount on her Bontrager XXX carbon stem. If you look closely at the IsoSpeed seat mast, you’ll notice an extra lightweight collar. This updated mast was developed for the super lightweight Trek Emonda but found its way over to the ‘cross teams looking for some weight reduction.

RideCX

Interesting. Have not seen these details elsewhere, thanks. Fork rake per frame size makes a lot of sense, especially for smaller bikes.

Jordan Villella

The bike was most likely designed around the 56cm frameset and trail. The rider feedback was that the 45 mm fork had some ill-handling characteristics (wheel flop feeling) and too much toe overlap. The team worked with the riders and came up with this solution. No idea if it will go into production or if its a “race team only” offering.

Right on. Toe clip overlap drives me crazy, and I’m a taller guy with bigger frames, where it’s easier to avoid. Can’t imagine trying to ride a 49cm with a bunch of toe overlap off-road where you turn the handlebar dramatically during slow speed turns.

Pm732

Other than “fighting against the rider” everything you said describes the 45mm fork, not the 50. 50 is going to be twitchier at speed.

Antoine

Exactly my thought, there has been a constant push towards lower offset in the mtb workd to get better high speed stability and lower offset forks really felt better to me. I had to ditch a great offer on a cannondale because the steering just felt bad because they insisted to keep a bigger offset. You can really see there that CX is driven by roadies and if a CX bike does not feel like a road bike it’s just not right. It’s true for handlebars too were many riders use crazy narrow setup when the steering is really so much better with a bit more width. The toe overlap is an interesting argument but i’d have gone for a longer reach smaller stem but i guess the CX world is not ready for that. I enjoy CX and i even have one but can’t see the benefit of numerous old school thing they insist on keeping.

R C

Yeah, it sounds like they are reducing trail to exchange stability for maneuverability.

John Caletti

They don’t give the head angle, but likely the head angle is less on the smaller bikes, and thus will be pretty close in trail with the fork change. It’s important to look at both the fork offset (“rake”) and head angle together (which can be described by the “trail” number). Usually the smaller bikes will get a reduced head angle and more offset in the fork to produce a similar trail as a larger bike, but with a longer Front Center for better toe clearance. Also, the shorter wheelbase and low height of rider and bike make for a bit quicker steering bike (lower stability) than in a taller, bigger, longer bike – thus it can be advantageous to increase the trail to provide a little more stability. Of course where this lands is subjective and designers and riders have their preferences, like lower trail/faster steering/ lower stability for a more road bike like feel, or more trail/more stability for rougher terrain, and probably feels more at home for a mountain biker moving to a gravel or CX bike.

Andrew

The increased Fork offset sounds similar to the ‘OutFront’ Steering geometry on the Cannondale SuperX/SuperSixEvo CX, does it not?

nilst

Do you mean “13 of the 18 medals won at the the 2022 World Championships” were on Dugast Typhoon. There were only six championship races, right?

ride comfort, versatility, looks awesome

weight (minor)

This bike was bought for road riding where roads are dirt or very rough and also for around town and light touring. I bought the Crossrip LTD (2014) with the 105 group set and Tektro HYRD hydraulic over cable disc brakes. I have only put about 250km on the bike so far, for which it has been used mainly on roads, paths and a few rail trails and paddock crossings (no touring yet). The ride is very smooth and comfortable with a very relaxed geometry compared to a road bike. The wheelbase is quite long with quite a long top tube so be careful with sizing - I had to get a size smaller compared to my road bike because of this (56cm for my Cannondale roadie compared to a 54cm Crossrip). The head tube is a bit higher off the ground and the fork has a noticeably larger rake than a road bike too so the fact that you are sitting higher and further back is reasonably apparent. The 105 drive train is quiet, smooth and shifts effortlessly. The gearing is lower than a road bike (smaller chain rings and larger sprockets on the cluster) so if you are planning to tag along on a bunch ride with some road bikes, you will be on the bottom of the cluster quite a bit. The Tektro HYRD brakes are smooth and efficient with the extra brake levers on the top position of the handlebars being extremely helpful when riding over any rough stuff and even more so when descending over a rough or loose surface. The downside of the extra levers being that, if you carry a handlebar mounted bag, there won't be room for it. The tyres do an admirable job in the dirt and on the road. Keep in mind that they only inflate to 80psi so don't expect road bike speed from them. At the other end of the spectrum, they require a minimum of 60psi so don't expect the kind of forgiveness you get from a MTB tyre. They are (as advertised) somewhere in the middle of the two. It has a bit more weight than a road bike but that's to be expected with everything from the frame to the tyres and rims being beefed up to take the knocks it was designed to take. Aesthetically, it looks fantastic with the polished alloy frame and contrasting hubs and fork giving it a hand built look. I expect that this bike will stay in my collection for many years to come.

Avanti Circa, Specialized Tricross

This bike (2013 Trek CrossRip Elite) was purchased to handle potholes, speed bumps, incidental mud and gravel--and to handle routine cargo. On that account the bike has been a success. I've put a couple of thousand miles on it, and the rims are still true and the spokes are still as tight as when it left the show room. I really like the Bontrager H5 tires, because they are absolutely sure-footed on bad pavement. I don't make a practice of riding in the rain, so no comment there. When they go, I might prefer going from 32's down to 28's, because they are not particularly fast. The frame is 58cm, and feels generous even though I'm almost 6'-2". With the seat post run out pretty high, and riding in the drops, and the stem set low, the ride is not harsh. I've changed over to Ritchie Biomax bars, so my hand position is somewhat more vertical than with the stock bars. I'm also trying out a Selle SMP Pro saddle, instead of the plain vanilla Bonty. The handling is relaxed, which suits my non-aggressive riding style. It gets a little twitchy with a big load in the panniers, and for just hauling some tools, a lock, and wallet and cell phone, it rides a lot nicer using a handlebar bag. The Sora 9-speed drivetrain is fair. It's starting to get a little balky, jumping cogs under load, but I think it is more about cable routing and adjusters--I already stripped out the cheesy plastic cable adjuster for the front derailleur. The brakes are a disappointment. They require an unusual amount of hand pressure--much more than feels secure. plus, they tend to rumble, particularly the front. All in all, I like riding it, particularly without panniers. On the other hand, I might have been just as happy with a Cross Check or something else, for less money. If the premium I paid was for disc brakes, then it was not worth it.

Mani scores day 1 victory at Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross

NECXS leaderboard gets tighter for elite women with leader Ruby West in sixth

Caroline Mani (Raleigh Clement) finished third at the C1 Jingle Cross race in 2021

Caroline Mani (Pactimo Fierce Team) won the opening day of Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross on Saturday in Falmouth, Massachusetts, her third C2 win of the season. She held off Caitlin Bernstein (Easton Overland/ McGovern Cycles) by 20 seconds for the solo victory at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds. Anna Megale (Trek Cyclocross Collective) finished third, sprinting to the line ahead of Crystal Anthony (Liv Racing Collective) and Lauren Zoerner (Alpha Bicycle Co - Groove Silverthorne).

Megale set the early pace with Canadian Ruby West and France’s Mani just one second off her lead after the first of six laps. Mani and Megale took charge at the front on the second lap, and kept the pace high on a clear New England day, while staying in the hunt with West was Anthony, Zoerner and Erica Zaveta (The Pony Shop p/b KPMG). Zaveta fell off the chase on the final lap and finished sixth.

Really Rad provides the final two rounds of New England Cyclocross Series (NECXS) and West was able to retain her overall lead for elite women. With her podium finish, the unofficial tabulation gave Bernstein a bump from fourth to second place in the standings and Zaveta moving down to third place.

Mani opened the season with back-to-back wins at GO Cross and has had six additional podiums this season racing USA Cycling's Pro CX calendar. Saturday's New England race was her first in the NECXS.

Trek CX Cup weekend is here! Here’s how to watch

trek cyclocross rad

Get ready for a PACKED weekend of fun, including a cyclocross World Cup race

Cyclocross season is back!

And even more importantly, so is the Trek CX Cup. The annual event at Trek Bicycle headquarters in Waterloo, Wisc., couldn’t take place last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now with safety measures in place , the biggest cyclocross race in the United States, and one of the best racing weekends on the calendar (in our humble opinion) can take place.

The main event is the UCI men’s and women’s elite World Cup races on Sunday. The women will race first at 12:30 p.m. CT, then the men will take the course at 2 p.m. for the last race of the weekend. But before then, the course will be in near constant use, with all levels of amateur races taking place beginning Friday.

trek cyclocross rad

Costumes: Encouraged.

If you happen to be in Waterloo, you especially won’t want to miss the Legends races on Friday and Saturday evening, when amateurs get to race next to cycling royalty (past participants include Jens Voigt, Sven Nys and Cam McCaul), and the only objective is to have maximum fun.

In sum, it’s going to be an absolute blast.

Click here for more information, FAQs and history about Trek CX Cup …

… click here to see a full schedule of events …

… and read on for more information about the big-time racing taking place Sunday.

Tokyo Olympic champion Jolanda Neff relaxing post-race in 2019.

Who's competing

The elite women’s race will feature a World champion and an Olympic champion.

Baloise Trek’s Lucinda Brand had a dream season in 2020-21, capped by winning the cyclocross World Championship in Oostende, Belgium . She’ll be wearing the rainbow stripes in Waterloo against a stacked field. Notably, Trek Factory Racing’s Jolanda Neff is hopping back on a Boone after wrapping up an XC mountain biking season that included a gold medal in Tokyo.

trek cyclocross rad

A host of young riders will also feature in the women’s race, including Baloise Trek’s Shirin van Arooij and TFR’s Maddie Munro and Hattie Harnden. Harnden is coming to Waterloo hot off an enduro racing season in which she won two Enduro World Series races and finished fourth overall .

In the men’s race, look out for Toon Aerts, who, along with Brand, won last weekend at the first Superprestige race of the new season . Baloise Trek teammate Lars van der Haar is also a podium contender, as are 20-year-old Pim Ronhaar, the defending U23 world champion, and 18-year-old Thibau Nys, the defending junior world champion and son of cyclocross legend Sven Nys.

trek cyclocross rad

Beautiful, sometimes sunny Waterloo.

The Waterloo course is unique and, dare we say, iconic. It takes a circuitous route all over Trek HQ’s backyard , weaving around grass (and after a few days of rain, probably a fair bit of mud), through trees and under/over three flyover elements that help make Trek CX Cup one of the most spectator-friendly venues in the sport.

Perhaps the most notorious element of the course is Trek Factory Hill, a steep down-and-up hill near the back wall of HQ. If the course is slippery, expect to see riders hopping off their bikes and running up the climb rather than foolishly trying to pedal.

Some local wildlife.

How to watch

For cyclocross fans watching from the United States, both the women’s and men’s elite World Cup races are available with subscriptions to GCN or Flobikes . Flobikes is also showing the races for Canadian viewers. Streaming will begin at 12:20 p.m. CT.

You can also follow Trek CX Cup on Twitter and Instagram for results, video, photos and updates from the event. Don’t miss one of the best sporting events of the year!

While the Canadians are racing their National Championships and at PTBOCX , the Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross is hosting two days of U.S. UCI racing in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

The race was started in 2015 as a continuation of the long-running Plymouth Festival of Cyclocross that started back in 1977. Last year, the event hosted two days of UCI racing.

Ellen Noble (Trek Factory Racing CX) is set to return to racing for the first time since the U.S. World Cups in the Elite Women’s race. Rebecca Fahringer (Kona Maxxis Shimano) helps join in heading up the start list, along with Katie Clouse (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), who had a successful weekend at Kings CX.

Last year’s double winner Crystal Anthony (Liv Cycling) also returns to defend her twin titles.
