Long Live Montero: Lil Nas X’s L.A. Tour Stop Was a Vibrant, Unapologetically Queer Production
- By Tomás Mier
Nothing — not even pre-show vomit — was going to stop Lil Nas X from putting on a phenomenal performance.
On Wednesday, Lil Nas X took the stage for the second of two sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater as part of his Long Live Montero Tour . In L.A., the musician — and his army of flawless dancers — shined through a powerful set full of storytelling, sparkling outfits , and impressive choreography, plus a cameo from special guest Saucy Santana .
Upon entering the venue, fans were handed playbills that outlined the show’s set list and foreshadowed the colorful visuals Nas would be using. The pamphlets and the gold accents around the stage were the first examples of how Lil Nas’ performance was more than a concert: This was a production , honey.
Ten minutes later, as the clock neared 10 p.m., the room darkened and the show began with the first of three acts: Revival.
A projection over a curtain told the audience that the “greatest thing a human can do is create,” before Nas — dressed in a golden crop top and matching pants — emerged on stage in front of a backdrop showing a colorful galaxy for his opening number, “Panini.”
“When I say I vomited, I wasn’t joking,” Nas said after the song, pointing to an emergency puke cup he kept near him. (He, thankfully, never had to use it.) “I already know this crowd is better than yesterday.”
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
What followed was a transition that depicted his rapid rise into fame. The visuals captured how Nas skyrocketed from a kid with a stan account (@NasMaraj) to the cowboy-hat-wearing viral star of “ Old Town Road. ” The end of the act, with Magic Mike-style choreo prior to “Rodeo,” seemed to symbolize that everything that came with his viral song was now part of his past.
What brought him to this stage is worth celebrating, but it’s no longer who he is.
Then came Act Two: Transformation, which, as a whole, served as a celebration of the unapologetic Black queer culture that Nas represents.
After opening with “Don’t Want It,” Nas and his dancers paid tribute to the ballroom scene, incorporating a vogue-filled dance break to “Pure/Honey” from Beyoncé’s Renaissance . The pause felt as a fitting homage to the queer people that came before him, while making clear that Nas is positioned in the present and future of the genre and culture.

The moment — aided by an interpolation of Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” — served as one of the highlights of the show as he performed in front of the hell-looking visuals from his viral music video.
Hours before his show in L.A. on Wednesday, Nas joked on Twitter, “ i will be cumming on 3 lucky fans for my cum-on-a-fan contest.” On night two, he reminded the audience — while wearing two flowing butterfly wings in front of a heaven-like backdrop — that those tweets “were still valid.” Though there was no cum contest, the climax of night two came moments later, when he welcomed rapper Saucy Santana for a surprise performance of their yet-to-be-released collaboration “Down Souf Hoes.”

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet
Taylor swift unveils double album ‘the tortured poets department: the anthology’, dickey betts, allman brothers band singer-guitarist, dead at 80, taylor swift busts out the quill pen and delivers an epic double album with 'ttpd: the anthology'.
Back in June, Nas told Rolling Stone that being a queer, Black man in this industry “has been a real, steep, steep hill of just trying to gain that confidence to keep pushing,” but that “we always make it to that next round.” His show was proof of that.
The night fittingly ended with “Industry Baby” and an unexpected, laser-flecked encore, “ Star Walkin’, ” his most recent single. Amid a standing ovation, Nas walked offstage. As he left, a few words flashed on the screen behind him: “The end of the beginning.” His queer-as-hell show is proof that Lil Nas X has already transformed into a complete force, and inarguably the greatest queer artist of 2022.

Lil Nas X Announces First World Tour for “Everyone Except Gay People”
By James Factora
Lil Nas X hive is eating good today, with the singer’s announcement that he is set to embark on his first world tour.
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
The “Industry Baby” singer announced his upcoming “Long Live Montero” tour via a slickly-produced video that he shared to Twitter on Tuesday morning. In a booming voiceover that played alongside a montage of iconic moments from his music videos and red carpet appearances, Lil Nas declares that “Everyone is allowed… except gay people.” Naturally, this was followed by clips of him dancing naked in a men’s locker room in the “ Industry Baby ” music video and making out with a background dancer at the BET Awards.
“All of u better come or I will cry on Instagram live,” Lil Nas X wrote in the tweet accompanying the video.
The tour comes a month after the end of Lil Nas X’s three month social media hiatus , during which all of his accounts went dark. When he returned to the Internet in mid-March, he joked that he had been on “maternity leave” following the release of his debut album, Montero . Between dropping one of the buzziest albums of 2021, announcing a world tour for the first time, and teasing new music , Lil Nas X’s break was well-deserved. But in his own words, we’re so happy he’s back on the internet.
The Long Live Montero tour will kick off in Detroit, Michigan on September 6, with dates across the U.S., Canada, and Europe before concluding in Barcelona, Spain. The general sale for tickets will begin this Friday at 10 a.m. at each date’s respective local time, with European tickets going on sale the following Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. local time. However, Cash App users that have a Cash Card, which is a debit card connected to your Cash App account, will be able to get tour tickets before anyone else, with their presale opening tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. local.

Lil Nas X's Long Live Montero Tour Is A Hell Of A Good Time
His performance at Radio City Music Hall was 🔥.
To watch a gay Black man flanked by hyper-feminine dancers headline a show at a venue as iconic as NYC’s Radio City Music Hall is a beautiful thing. Lil Nas X did just that for his sold-out Long Live Montero tour stop on Sept. 20. Here are the most fabulous highlights.
Divided into three acts, Lil Nas’ thematic show borrowed from The Wizard of Oz to illustrate his metamorphosis from aspiring rapper to Grammy winner. As if it were a Broadway show, fans were given a Playbill outlining his cast, crew, fashion credits, and setlist.
‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ Review: A Concert Film Captures the Scrappy Grandeur of Lil Nas X Onstage, Revealing Who He Is
Directed by Carlós Lopez Estrada and Zac Manuel, the music doc chronicles his 2022 concert tour, which Lil Nas X commands as only a true pop star can.

You know you’re watching a true pop star when that person’s identity — their very existence — smashes boundaries. Elvis Presley was a country boy who mixed country and rockabilly and the blues, and with his sneer and black hair and mascara he looked like no human had ever looked before. Prince was a one-man band who mixed funk and rock with his own synth-pop bitches’ brew and sang, “Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay?”
Popular on Variety
The movie, co-directed with scrappy vibrance by Carlós Lopez Estrada (“Blindspotting”) and Zac Manuel, is a spontaneous, engaging ramble that chronicles Lil Nas X’s first concert tour, which took place from September to November 2022. But the film also has the quality of an on-the-fly psychodrama, or at least a kind of meditation, since Lil Nas X speaks, at great length, about what it takes — and what it means — for a star like himself to be queer and open about it.
That’s one of many reasons why his coming out meant so much to so many people. He seemed to be offering a kind of benediction to a new way of being. At the start of “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero,” he says that he wants his stage act to be “great, and super-grand, and big,” and that’s just what it is. From the first concert, in a beautiful old theater in Detroit, the show has a larger-than-life quality, with every move and song and gesture invested with Lil Nas X’s transformative mystique.
Viewed next to the hallowed rock history of pompadours and wild hair, Lil Nas X, on stage, has hair styled so high it looks like a nuclear cloud; on his body is a gold breastplate over a bare midriff. Tall and ripped, he’s gorgeous — a leonine statue with a light in his eye. Says one fan outside a show, “He’s the first male celebrity I wanted to fuck and be at the same time,” which says a great deal. His moves have a language all their own: now imperious, now fornicating, now mincing, now rock-star swaggering. Born in 1999, he’s a 21st-century collage artist, and what holds his act together is the joyful ferocity that animates every move. Simply put, he means it.
Lil Nas X and his team had just one month to choreograph and rehearse the tour. We see black-and-white footage of a rehearsal 22 days before the first date, where he talks about how scary it is to have to learn it all that fast. The film also takes us back to a few key moments from the past, like when he first encountered the Nine Inch Nails track “34 Ghosts IV,” the sample that undergirds “Old Town Road” (as soon as he heard it, he says that he knew the song would be big), or how his family members reacted to the news that he was gay. Most of them are in the movie, visiting him backstage, and Nas describes their acceptance of him as a work in progress. There are levels of acceptance, suggested by the word… acceptance . Are you “accepting” who someone is, or are you embracing it? Just allowing the reality of it to be?
That, in a way, is what Lil Nas X is meditating on throughout the documentary, as he lolls on a couch pillow, talking to the filmmakers. He has a playful sense of his own complication and is wickedly funny, putting on an English accent and, at one point, giving pizza to the protesters outside a Boston show — the ones who are denouncing him as a tool of Satan. “I was a little evil in doing it,” he says with a chuckle, “because it was pineapple pizza.”
Then again, he’s an old-school romantic as well, and that’s something you don’t exactly see everyday in hip-hop. The highlight of the movie may be his onstage performance of “That’s What I Want,” with its plaintive militance as he sings, “‘Cause it don’t feel right when it’s late at night/And it’s just me and my dreams.” “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” channels the grandeur of what it means to put your dreams out there, for everyone to see.

Lil Nas X is a 22-year-old award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. Dubbed “an internationally recognized phenomenon” by Billboard, he rose to fame in 2019 when he released “Old Town Road” and simultaneously upended the music industry – shattering genre norms, disrupting the charts and going viral worldwide. The song’s remix with Billy Ray Cyrus became the longest running #1 single in Billboard Hot 100 history after 19 weeks atop the chart. The 16x Platinum hit is the most certified song in RIAA history and is recognized with numerous awards including two Grammys. After releasing his eclectic EP 7 in June 2019, which features the 6x Platinum “Panini” and 2x Platinum “Rodeo,” Lil Nas X returned in November 2020 with his Platinum single “HOLIDAY”, and followed with the culture-shifting 3x Platinum hit “MONTERO (Call Me Be Your Name)” in March 2021. The queer anthem provoked much needed dialogue around the globe, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, remained atop of the Spotify Global chart for over a month straight, and propelled to #1 on the Top 40 and Rhythm Airplay charts. Already named a fashion icon for all his incredible eye-catching looks, the multifaceted artist and internet king released his critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated debut album Montero in September 2021. The album was included on numerous Best of 2021 lists from Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, People, USA Today, Billboard, LA Times, Complex, and more for “its genre-stretching approach and refreshingly honest exploration of love and loneliness” as told by Variety. The certified Platinum album, which Billboard calls a “masterpiece,” also boasts the 4x Platinum hit song “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow, which went on to reach #1 at Top 40 radio and #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s third Platinum single “That’s What I Want” recently became Nas’ third straight #1 song at Top 40 radio. Lil Nas X is currently in the studio working on his sophomore album.

Booking the popular artist and his concert tour film into Roy Thomson Hall is a safe bet for Toronto as the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will keep a slew of A-list stars from the marquee festival to promote films tied to a member of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, meaning major studios and streamers or specialty divisions like Sony Pictures Classics, Searchlight or Focus Features.
Oscar-nominated López Estrada has credits that include Blindspotting, Summertime and Raya and the Last Dragon . He began his career directing music videos for musicians such as Billie Eilish, Thundercat and Flying Lotus, Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen.
The Toronto Film Festival is set to run from Sept. 7 to 17.

Lil Nas X Previews New Song from Forthcoming 'Nasarati 2' Mixtape: Listen to 'Right There'
'Nasarati 2' is the follow-up to the Grammy winner's 2018 'Nasarati' mixtape
Leon Bennett/WireImage
Lil Nas X ’s new music is here!
The “Industry Baby” artist celebrated his 25th birthday with a gift to his fans — a brand new single.
“THANK U FOR ALL THE BDAY LOVE! The next song from the ‘NASARATI 2’ mixtape ‘RIGHT THERE’ is out now on SoundCloud!... see u next wednesday,” he wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, April 10, along with a link to the new release.
Nasarati 2 is the follow-up to his 2018 Nasarati mixtape.
The upbeat banger features Lil Nas X rapping over what appears to be a female-led gospel choir singing in the background throughout the entirety of the song.

Before the track ends, he delivers the lines: “Big Nas, come get that work/ Montero, these hoes gon’ flirt/ Lost and found, I can’t find my shirt/ Montero just popped that Perc/ This feel like God in church/ This scripture a Bible verse/ Buss it open and make it/ Buss it open and make it twerk.”
In early January, the "Old Town Road" musician (né Montero Lamar Hill) responded to backlash for using biblical imagery in one of his latest singles, "J Christ."
"I wanted to not necessarily apologize, but I wanted to explain where my head at and where it's been for like the last week. So first of all, when I did the artwork, I knew there would be some upset people or whatnot simply cause religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn't mean to mock," Lil Nas X said in a video post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Jan. 15.
"This wasn't like a 'f--- you to you people. F--- you to the Christians.' It was not that. It was literally me saying, 'Oh, I'm back. I'm back like Jesus,’” he added.
He’d also previously addressed the religious fallout from his fans earlier that month claiming that he was “not making fun of s---.”

Lil Nas X revisited the topic in his HBO documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero , which was released on the streaming service on Jan. 27.

In the film, which is co-directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, the “Scoop” artist shared that his love for music led him to discover his spirituality in his teen years.
“Starting when I turned 16 or something, I kind of abandoned religion altogether at first, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I don’t believe this. None of this is real,’” he recalled. “But when I started to do music, I can’t explain it, but I felt a presence bigger than me, and I was like, ‘I know for a fact that this is going to work.’”

Dua Lipa, “Illusion”
Following the top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hits “Houdini” and “Training Season,” pop superstar Dua Lipa is back with the third taste of her upcoming Radical Optimism set, “Illusion.” Co-written with regular collaborator Caroline Ailin, singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr., PC Music soundsmith Danny L Harle and psych-pop fixture Kevin Parker — the latter two of whom also co-produced — Lipa sings of learning to “take my rose-colored glasses off” when dealing with a potential new love with no shortage of red flags. The track finds her back in her disco-pop sweet spot, and with its repeated “dance all night” refrain should find its way to plenty of radio and club airplay in no time.
Sabrina Carpenter, “Espresso”
Lil Nas X, “Right There”
“Been hoarding music for years smh i hate my relationship with fear of my songs not doing well and perception,” Lil Nas X wrote on Instagram in March. “i wish i could just release music and not give af.” The rapper seems to be walking the walk now by dropping his new “Right There” on SoundCloud earlier this week, thought to be a track from his upcoming Nasarati 2 mixtape. With a bombastic beat built around an angelic backing vocal loop, the song sounds absolutely enormous as LNX mixes themes of sex, drugs and religion in his verses: “Montero just popped that Perc/ This feel like God in church/ This scripture a Bible verse/ Buss it open and make it twerk.”
Maggie Rogers, Don’t Forget Me
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers might not be likely to end up with the most buzzed-about release of the week since Future & Metro entered the picture, but Don’t Forget Me should nonetheless delight fans of her sparkling, impassioned folky alt-pop. Highlights of the songs not already released from her 10-track third official LP include the Pat Benatar-worthy ’80s pop-rock blast “Drunk” and the gently-but-firmly shuffling acoustic kiss-off “On & On & On.”
