The volcano inside the 360 experience at Journey

I had dinner inside a ‘volcano’ at this new immersive restaurant and bar

This new spot near Madison Square Park brings theatricality to your dinner plate.

Shaye Weaver

On Monday, my dinner table began smoking and my dish emerged from a glass cover filled with even more smoke. The room glowed with the amber-red hue of lava and the sound of crackling fire filled the space.

I was at Journey , a new restaurant, bar and lounge that is bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City with immersive video installations paired with fine dining and mixology.

On its surface, it may sound like a gimmick, but a deeper dive—actually experiencing it—yields a fun night out with actually good drinks and food.

RECOMMENDED: You must solve a cipher to enter this speakeasy-styled restaurant and bar

Journey, which had a soft opening this week at its Madison Square Park location at 27 West 24th Street, is a celebration of travel and the connections we make with people on our…well, journeys.

The playfully-decorated space shows off a massive collection of globes from thrift shops and antique stores, 3D sculptures of the world’s most famous landmarks and buildings above its bar, a display of replica antiquities, and a wall of moving classical art a-la Harry Potter.

Journey salon art

Each area within the space—the bar, the salon, and the café—has a theatrical element.

At the bar, the cocktails you order (Legends of the Fall, Bloody Sunset, Apocalypto and Adordable Ruby) have accompanying comedic skits via augmented reality projected right in front of you on the bar top, including whiskey professor Ben Vereen.

In the “Epic Café,” where you can order a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dishware has hidden 3D designs that you can unlock through an app on your phone.

In the beautiful and boothed Salon, which contains the collection of replica antiquities, projections bring sculptures to life and a hostess bedecked in stunning “FashionTech” couture tells you the stories behind them, adding a layer of live performance to your experience.

Journey Experience Bar

The bar, Salon and Epic Café each have their own menus from chef Edward Hong.

Two additional experiences are available at Journey: Journey Odyssey and Journey 360.

Opening on Friday, the 50-seat, ticketed experience Journey Odyssey creates a multisensory dinner experience at tables for two and four. Some of Broadway’s most talented performers— Cady Huffman and Judy Kaye —have filmed a series of amusing vignettes that introduce each of the five courses, which hail from different locales: an appetizer in Tokyo, the first course in Venice, and the entrée in Buenos Aires.

Journey Experience Bar

Perhaps the most impressive and immersive of all the experiences at Journey is Journey 360, which is where the firey table inside a volcano exists.

The ticketed culinary adventure, which fits 20 people at a time around a long, communal table, features 360 projection mapping that transports diners to four different locations across the world.

On Monday, I did the 360 experience and was whisked away (on a virtual airship named Celestine) from the top of the Empire State Building to the Amazonian rainforest to the artic, from a shipwreck under the sea to the inside of a volcano and finally to outer space. Throughout the entire five-course prix-fixe meal, the visuals and soundscape surrounding us were entertaining and were made even more exciting by an actor wearing a techie dress who led us through the trip.

Each dish corresponded to a setting—Amazonian greens (a salad made with Yuca, tocacho, hearts of palm, Cupaucu vinaigrette) in the rainforest; gin-cured arctic salmon (with cucumber, horseradish, apple and dill) at the Artic; black cod (with miyoga, bok choy and yuzu dashi glaze) under the sea; braised veal cheek (with forbidden rice risotto, harissa and marscapone); and raspberry mousse with chocolate gelato (almond texture, cardamom foam and Grand Marnier) in space.

Journey Experience Bar

While in the volcano, waiters placed dry ice on the table to make it smoke, then they brought out the veal, covered with glass domes. In one synchronous movement, the waiters lifted the domes and vapor poured out across the dish and our place settings. It was the crescendo, the high point, of the entire meal and it was indeed theatrical.

And yes, the visuals were fun, but the best part of the whole experience was seeing this all unfold with the people (strangers) around me. I ended up grabbing cocktails with a couple sitting across the way afterward in the salon, which is not a typical thing for me to do.

If you want to take your own journey in the middle of midtown, tickets for the shows Journey 360 and Journey Odyssey ($175pp) are available on the Tock app and at exploretock.com . Reservations for the Café or the Salon can be made through Open Table.

Review: JOURNEY 360 in NYC-A Unique and Fascinating Gastronomical Adventure

JOURNEY 360 in NYC

pixeltracker

Journey , the chic restaurant and lounge, located on 24th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues is the talk of the town. It has so much to offer you will want to make plans to visit again and again. We highly recommend making reservations for their Journey 360. This one of a kind and fascinating immersive dining experience is exquisite. It is a prix-fixe gastronomical event that transports you to exotic locations around the world without ever leaving Manhattan.

Journey has been designed by Broadway veteran, David Gallo. Co-owners and restaurateurs, Alex Cesaria and Marc Routh are responsible for it's unique concept. Recently, Journey has tapped the talents of Executive Chef Diego Negri who has a vast culinary background from around the world. He brings an international blend of culinary styles with his experience in Italian, Spanish, French, Mediterranean, Asian, and South American cuisines.

Review: JOURNEY 360 in NYC-A Unique and Fascinating Gastronomical Adventure

Journey 360 seats guests at a communal table that features stunning floor to ceiling and tabletop projection mapping. While you observe beautiful and striking images of places around the world, a delectable and generous six-course menu that corresponds to each location is served. The presentation and taste of each tantalizing dish is as incredible as the venue. And the excursion has a charming guide who relates interesting information for each adventure.

Review: JOURNEY 360 in NYC-A Unique and Fascinating Gastronomical Adventure

Journey 360 starts on the top of the Empire State Building on a tethered zeppelin.  From there you will go to spots such as The Forest as you have a salad of Amazonian Forest Greens with Lola lettuce, Matche lettuce, Brazilian Nuts, Raspberry Vinaigrette, Yucca Frita and Mango. Travels will also take you The Arctic as you are served Cod in Spiruluna Foam Potatoes and Leeks with Tobiko Eggs.  As you venture to the Volcano, relish the course of Braised Short Ribs with Fried Polenta, Sungold Tomato Onion Ash Espellet Powder and Grapes in a Short Rib Sauce. Save room for dessert. The meal will end with a futuristic, otherworldly dessert set in an out of this world location.

Review: JOURNEY 360 in NYC-A Unique and Fascinating Gastronomical Adventure

While you savor each moment of your meal, the ever-changing projections and well-selected background sounds are totally relaxing. It’s no wonder guests are making it a marvelous night out or a special occasion destination. When we visited, there were friends groups, a couple enjoying their milestone anniversary and a birthday celebration. Make your reservations in the coming month for a special holiday outing. For Journey 360 guests, the restaurants bar’s top-notch menu is available or can add the optional wine pairing for each course that has wonderfully selected wines from around the globe. Seatings are at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm for the 1.5 hour experience.  We live in a big, beautiful world, and Journey 360 completely captures it.

Review: JOURNEY 360 in NYC-A Unique and Fascinating Gastronomical Adventure

Journey has three other inviting dining experiences in addition to Journey 360. Journey A La Carte i ntroduces Chef Diego’s delicious a la carte menu in setting featuring 3D printed architectural models and a gorgeous ambiance; Journey Lounge is a unique experiential bar where paintings and a collection of curiosities come to life. Cutting edge 3D projection mapping and video techniques create ever-changing environments, while patrons enjoy craft cocktails and small specialty plates;  and Journey Voyager invites guests to savor a three-course meal as Tony Award winning director John Rando leads a Broadway creative team on an exhilarating travel odyssey, as the tabletop comes alive with optical illusions and video animation.

JOURNEY EXPERIENCE NYC

Immersive dining in the flatiron district.

Enter Journey Experience NYC and you will immediately feel like you’re in an elegant and sophisticated dining room. Go to the back and side rooms, and you will find unique immersive experiences that are $175 per person—but worth every penny.

the journey 360 reviews

The Journey 360 room is fascinating. Picture a long communal table with classic white linens and five-course menus neatly tucked into the napkin with each guest’s name projected onto their seating spot! In addition, there are projections on the walls around you that make you feel as if you are dining in a zeppelin tethered to the Empire State Building and other famous landmarks around the world. Some of the different experiences within this unique eatery include a dark back lounge with fantastic art and furniture from around the world, including a “bottomless” table with endless swirls of lightbulbs under the glass.

The two masterminds behind Journey Experience NYC are Broadway producer Marc Routh, a co-owner of the Tony Award-winning Broadway supper club 54 Below, and noted restauranteur Alex Vanderbilt. Both are proud of the high praise they are getting for their groundbreaking project. Vanderbilt told New York Lifestyles, “Journey 360 is more multimedia and technology-based, so it feels extremely intriguing when you sit at the table with your name emblazoned on the seat. Journey Odyssey is more theatrical and has that life-actor integration that makes the show feel more Broadway and less technology.”

However, the star in both experiences is the food, the quality, and the creativity of the dishes. Chef Edward Hong has created each dish to support the location and narrative while surprising and delighting the guests through traditional culinary sensations of taste, smell, and visuals. The cuisine is a real mix of styles and includes a lot of raw fish. Vanderbilt calls it “new American cuisine with a Korean influence. We are so proud of our care in preparing and sourcing farm-to-table ingredients, to the prime choice of fish, meat, and other proteins.” In addition, sitting at either the front or back-room bars provides a la carte off an elevated bar menu—with no reservations required.

the journey 360 reviews

AN “EPIC” EXPERIENCE If you want standard dining without immersive experiences, book an a la carte dinner in the front room, Journey Epic Café. The go-to dishes we tried and have been obsessed with ever since included the appetizers: the Wagyu Sliders which are a meal in themselves—you get three giant dry-aged sliders topped with artisanal melted cheddar. Finally, we teamed those burgers with the Disco Fries, hearty sticks of potatoes boiled, fried, and then baked with melted Gouda and herbs.

When it came time for the entrees, we decided to go big or go home and share a large steak! The dry-aged Tomahawk Steak is an impressive 40 ounces, including the extra-large bone, and can feed three or four people! It is sided with homemade chimichurri sauce, roasted veggies including multicolored carrots, and super buttery mashed potatoes, the perfect medium-to-firm consistency!

For dessert, we split the Raspberry Mousse and Baba Au Rhum, which are done halfway between “deconstructed” and “classic” styles. The Raspberry Mousse features a unique consistency, almost like cookie crumbs have been mixed in, while the Baba Au Rhum is served warm, with homemade custard in both the center and on top.

the journey 360 reviews

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Each night has different immersive experiences, and there will be more choices as time goes on—check the Journey Experience NYC website for the themes available the night you want to book.

If you want simple a la carte dining in the Journey Epic Café but still want to experience the projections, you can visit the bars and ask the friendly bartenders to show you some visuals.

The most popular immersive journey is Journey Odyssey. It features Broadway performers Cady Huffman and Judy Kate doing vignettes about visiting each country representing the five courses. The Journey 360 option gives you the experience of dining in the center of a volcano. Amazingly, dry ice is placed on your table, so diners are engulfed in smoke when your food comes out. (Now, that’s what we would call “theatrical gastronomy” at its most extreme!)

Tribeca festival announces thrilling feature film lineup for 2024.

' src=

The 2024 Tribeca Festival, presented by OKX, today unveiled its features lineup, offering a diverse array of narrative, documentary, and animated films. Scheduled to run from June 5-16 in New York City, this year’s Festival promises a thoughtfully curated program and includes everything from timely documentaries addressing political and social concerns to independent narratives showcasing award-winning actors. Additionally, the opening night event, presented in partnership with OKX and City National Bank, was announced.

Tribeca kicks off on Wednesday, June 5 with the world premiere of Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge , an intimate look at the life of the fashion designer and cultural luminary. The film captures Diane von Furstenberg’s impact as a creative icon, who challenged the status quo with the bold inquiry, “Why shouldn’t a woman do what a man can do?” Directed by Tribeca alumni Trish Dalton and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Woman in Charge opens the lineup of features.

The 2024 selection of feature films includes Jazzy with Lily Gladstone; Daddio starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn; Firebrand starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law; BRATS , directed by Andrew McCarthy, with Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, and Lea Thompson; Sacrament o, directed by Michael Angarano, starring Michael Cera, Kristen Stewart, and Maya Erskine; Winter Spring Summer or Fall starring Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White; and Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story with Liza Minnelli. Comedic stars are in Group Therapy , including Neil Patrick Harris, Mike Birbiglia, and Tig Notaro; All That We Love stars Margaret Cho and Jesse Tyler Ferguson; and Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution features Lily Tomlin, Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell, Hannah Gadsby, and Joel Kim Booster.

Music documentaries highlight the boldest voices of each generation with They All Came Out To Montreux with Prince, Sting, Carlos Santana, Aretha Franklin, and Keith Richards; Satisfied about Renée Elise Goldsberry; Linda Perry: Let It Die Here with Linda Perry, Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile, and Christina Aguilera; and Avicii – I’m Tim with Tim “Avicii” Bergling, Chris Martin and David Guetta. Renée Elise Goldsberry and Linda Perry will be performing following the world premiere of their respective films.

“Each year, the Tribeca Festival reflects our culture, capturing the essence of the present moment. We’re thrilled to showcase our 23rd edition, delving into captivating explorations of artificial intelligence with Demis Hassabis, thought-provoking discussions on the future of democracy, and so much more,” Tribeca Co-Founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal. “Storytelling possesses a remarkable ability to bring us together, offering hope in these challenging times. We eagerly anticipate engaging with audiences on difficult yet timely subjects.”

The 23rd edition of Tribeca reflects our activist roots, to showcase a slate of films that speak to today’s political moment and inform voters ahead of the upcoming election. Hacking Hate, directed by Simon Klose, questions the role of social media in amplifying hate speech and extremism. McVeigh , directed by Mike Ott, portrays right-wing extremism with chilling modern implications. America’s Burning, directed by David Smick and narrated by Michael Douglas, dives into the economic root of hate and division.

At the core of our mission is the belief that art can spark change, particularly in the aftermath of global conflicts. The Cranes Call , directed by Laura Warner, spotlights war crimes investigators for the Clooney Foundation for Justice, led by Amal and George Clooney, as they risk their lives traveling across Ukraine to build cases against Russian soldiers and commanders. Antidote, directed by James Jones, digs into the truth about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s deadly regime. Checkpoint Zoo, directed by Joshua Zeman, documents the daring rescue of thousands of animals trapped behind enemy lines in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As War continues to affect regions like the Middle East and Ukraine, art serves as a powerful reminder of our shared humanity.

“In a year of record high submissions, despite industry-wide challenges, and global tumult, our incredible filmmaking community delivered again with some of the most surprising, inspiring, hilarious, galvanizing, boundary-breaking, and downright entertaining work we’ve had the privilege to feature at the festival,” said Tribeca Festival Director and SVP of Programming Cara Cusumano. “Whether grappling with everything from the crisis of global democracy to the most intimate of human dramas, it was heartening to be reminded of the undeniable power of a great film to illuminate our world.”

For the first time, Tribeca’s signature Viewpoints section of bold original visions and innovative perspectives will be in competition. The interdisciplinary program encompasses U.S. and international films across narrative, documentary, and animation, including the animated feature Boys Go to Jupiter starring Elsie Fisher, Tavi Gevinson, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman, and the narrative thriller Darkest Miriam with Britt Lower. Documentaries include Champions of the Golden Valley , directed by Ben Sturgulewski, an inspiring sports fable and portrait of people in profound political and social transition, and Searching for Amani, directed by Debra Aroko, a 13-year-old’s dramatic quest to investigate his father’s mysterious murder in one of Kenya’s largest wildlife conservancies.

The final selections were chosen from a record-breaking number of submissions (13,016). This year’s program includes 103 feature films from 114 filmmakers across 48 countries. The lineup comprises 86 world premieres, two international premieres, six North American premieres, and eight New York premieres. Half of the films in competition are directed by women. Additionally, 35% (36) of feature films are directed by BIPOC filmmakers. There are 30 films directed by first-time filmmakers and 25 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects.

The Tribeca Festival is curated by Festival Director and SVP of Programming Cara Cusumano, Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer; VP of Shorts Programming Ben Thompson; Senior Programmers Liza Domnitz, Faridah Gbadamosi, Jarod Neece, José F. Rodriguez; Programmers Casey Baron, Jason Gutierrez, Jonathan Penner, and Madison Egan; VP of Games and Immersive Casey Baltes and Immersive Curator Ana Brzezińska; EVP of Artist Relations Nancy Lefkowitz and VP of Artist Relations Meredith Mohr; Curator of Audio Storytelling Davy Gardner; Music Programmer Vincent Cassous; along with a team of associate programmers; supported and inspired by the legendary Paula Weinstein.

The full feature film lineup is detailed below. For more updates on programming follow @Tribeca and #Tribeca2024 on Twitter , Instagram , Facebook , and LinkedIn . A Tribeca Membership or 2024 Tribeca Festival passes and ticket packages can be purchased at tribecafilm.com .

Fable: The Journey Review

  • First Released Oct 9, 2012 released

By focusing on strong character development and beautiful locales, Fable: The Journey provides an engaging adventure enhanced by satisfying motion controls.

By Tom Mc Shea on October 10, 2012 at 7:29PM PDT

The arrow is buried deep in the horse's side. You wave your arms while uttering soothing words, trying to calm the frightened animal. Once the horse is docile, you approach your four-legged friend slowly, careful not to upset her, and then rest your hand gingerly on the protruding arrow. With the utmost care, you pull the projectile from her body, steadying your hand so as not to cause even more pain to the distressed creature. It's a simple act that takes no more than a minute to perform, but it has a powerful effect on your state of mind. Fable: The Journey establishes strong emotional weight through smartly crafted scenes enhanced by the Kinect's motion-sensing capabilities, creating a rewarding and exciting adventure.

Now Playing: Video Review - Fable: The Journey

Albion is once again in need of a hero. As Theresa flees from an unseen monster, Gabriel is kind enough to help her onto his carriage and away from harm. The relationship between the 300-year-old seer and the green boy who dreams of long gone fables is slow to develop. The characters chat while sitting around a fire or while riding through the striking locales, and there's a clear hesitancy in forming a deeper connection. Theresa has seen countless friends die during her centuries of life and thinks of Gabriel as little more than a tool she can use to save the world. And Gabriel would rather curl up in a soft bed, with his loyal horse Seren nearby, than go on a dangerous adventure.

But through painstaking trials and debilitating ordeals, the two characters grow closer. Fable: The Journey makes great use of the few characters who make an appearance in this story. Although the basic save-the-world plot hits the expected notes without much flourish, it's the people you meet along the way you care about. When Fergus tells the story of his deceased wife, ravaged by balverines years before, you nod because you've heard this tale of woe before. But as you travel the road, Fergus is forced to confront his demons, and you form a deeper, more nuanced understanding of his grief. Fable: The Journey provides occasional moments of levity to keep you smiling, but it strikes a more somber tone than previous games in the franchise. And the heartfelt moments carry serious weight because the game earned your sympathy.

Don't enjoy the sights too much while navigating a treacherous path.

In no place is this more apparent than in Gabriel's relationship with Seren. Throughout the game, he talks about how close they've always been. About how he's been riding on her back since he was a toddler and how he travels everywhere with her. And although that does establish their link, such trivia does little to move you. It's not the telling that makes you care about Seren; it's the actions you perform. Pulling out an arrow is just one of the horse-keeping tasks you do to maintain her health and happiness, and these little activities have a big effect on your feelings toward her. Brushing her coat to scrape off the dirt from the dusty roads or feeding her an apple has little tangible impact on your adventuring, but these quiet interludes draw you closer to her. This is your horse, after all, so you ensure that she's well fed and clean. These bonding moments make up a small portion of the entire journey, but they leave the biggest impact on your experience.

Of course, there's much more to Fable: The Journey than caring for your horse. This is an on-rails adventure in which you continually travel toward the Spire, where your ultimate fate awaits you at the end of your journey. Much of the game involves riding down lonely roads behind your constant companion, Seren. By gripping imaginary reins in both hands, you crack them to speed up your horse, adjust your hands to race through turns, or raise your arms to come to a stop. With experience points to collect and winding curves to navigate, there's little time to rest, but the repetition of steering a horse could become tiring before long. Thankfully, Fable: The Journey spruces up this simple activity. Eye-catching visual design ensures that every craggy mountain pass and splendid waterfall delights your senses, and Theresa's eager storytelling fills you in on the expansive plot.

But you can only ride your horse for so long before you must dismount. Once you're on foot, the adventure is still on-rails, but the action shifts to combat. As the chosen hero, you have gauntlets that let you fire off powerful magical bursts. By waving your dominant hand, you command an electric spell that quickly whittles away the health of every balverine and hollow man you meet. Your off hand produces a push spell. Toss an enemy off a bridge or spin an armored foe around to expose a weak point, or just see how long you can juggle a hobbe before you get tired. Aiming is tricky because spells go in whatever direction you thrust your hand, so it's easy to be way off the mark if you're not careful. But this is not a big problem. Every attack homes in on nearby enemies, so as long as you aim in their vicinity, you're sure to land a hit. And even if you should miss, there's little punishment for failure. Attacks can be blocked by moving your arm in front of your chest, so you won't often die at the hands of a horde of eager enemies.

Combat scenarios become more complex as you get deeper into the adventure. You eventually learn five different spells, and the tougher enemies require you to use a few in tandem to finish them off. You may stun a group of attackers with a push spell while readying a fireball with your other hand, and then set the lot on fire just when they think they're safe. Or you could split your spear in pieces by flicking your hand after you toss it, causing magic shards to rain down death from above. Bosses force you to make use of all your powers at key moments, and though these require you to think fast, they're easy enough that the frustration level is kept low. This is a game that would rather entertain than challenge you, so the enemies push you to take advantage of your many spells without forcing you to move with the speed and precision of a real sorcerer.

Still, there is some frustration with the motion controls. Spells home in on enemies, but not always on pieces of the environment. This becomes a problem when you have to solve puzzles. At certain points, you have to push or zap a background object, and you may fling your hand a half dozen or so times without anything good happening. After a few moments pass, the game highlights exactly what you're supposed to do, and then you need only flick your wrist to complete the task. It's maddening that you often have to wait around for 10 or so seconds to pass an obstacle, especially when the game so helpfully provides a homing ability in other activities. These moments of unresponsiveness shouldn't derail your journey, but they do interrupt the horse-petting, magic-flinging fun.

None of the various actions you perform are particularly thrilling on their own, but Fable: The Journey maintains your attention through smart pacing. Fighting a group of hollow men is hard work, and you're liable to be tired after whipping fireballs for a few minutes. Thankfully, just when you're aching for relief, the game switches to something else. Smoothly drifting between riding, fighting, grooming, puzzle solving, and storytelling tickles different parts of your brain, keeping you focused without any scene overstaying its welcome. Feel free to stretch out lazily during a cutscene and then sit upright when the action resumes, grabbing the imaginary reins once more as you set off on another quest.

Not even a kamikaze hollow man can survive against a fireball.

Excellent visual design has been one of the defining characteristic of Fable since the franchise began, and that tradition continues in Fable: The Journey. The tightly structured progression allows for more environmental detail than before, and the subtle artistic touches that enliven the variety of places you visit create a mesmerizing atmosphere. Round a corner along a rocky pass and you see a serene waterfall wash away the filth of the rampaging hobbe army that just careened through the area. The visual splendor pulls you into the world of Albion, making it a place you want to inhabit, and the expressive animations make the characters more lively. Seren in particular benefits from these touches as she neighs affectionately and nuzzles your arm. Her devotion fuels your own, enriching your relationship with this adorable companion.

Fable: The Journey makes excellent use of the Kinect. By focusing on just a few different actions that don't require much precision, it keeps you keyed in on your experience rather than fighting with the controls. But that's beside the point; you won't even be thinking about the controls before long. It's the way this game unfolds that's so enthralling. From the strong relationships you build to the dangers you conquer along the way, you're drawn in until this fantastic story is resolved. Fable: The Journey recognizes beauty everywhere. It doesn't matter if you're admiring the grand mountain vistas or having a quiet moment at the camp with Seren, you understand why it's worth fighting for the things you care most about.

  • Leave Blank
  • Strong relationship building
  • Well-realized Kinect controls
  • Smart pacing gives you ample time to rest
  • Beautiful visual design

"Kristen was such a pleasure to work with in selling our home. I was so worried about the process, but she came in and gave us peace of mind throughout the whole thing. She is so knowledgeable in the industry that my husband and I literally gave her a date on when we wanted to be out of our house and she handled the rest. Very professional, very friendly, I would recommend her hands down to anyone selling or buying a home. She’s the real deal and I will give her my business again. Thank you Kristen for all your hard work and time you put into our sale; it shows and we appreciate it."

Fable: the journey (xbox 360) review.

Fable is the brainchild of Lionhead Studios and the now departed Peter Molyneux.  The series is loved by many and comes with a huge following of fans that are probably wondering how designer Peter Molyneux’s swan song for the franchise has turned out.  Fable: The Journey is a new Xbox 360 Kinect game that promises full Kinect integration and functionality.  While I am not a full-fledged Fable fan I do like the idea of being able to use some of the Kinect’s features while gaming, so I endeavoured to dig deeper.

I have played with a few Kinect enabled games, but I have yet to fully enjoy how the games integrate its functionality.  I find that more often than not I have to wave repeatedly in order to make the Kinect work, which of course makes for terrible gaming sessions so Kinect games, for me, get put to the back burner; however, after playing Fable: The Journey for a brief period I can say it is one of the better Kinect games yet, but it is far from perfect.  It seems like most of the problems lie with the Kinect itself, as I had to move and re-calibrate the unit twice before it began to work properly.

While the unit had some hiccups and some repetition in movements there were brief periods where I found the game pretty accurate and responsive.  That immersive feeling began to creep in during these times although using magic and throwing spells is a tad bit on the slow side hindering gameplay at crucial moments.  The Kinect would sometimes just not want to respond at all, which of course ramped up my frustration levels and result in complete reset of the game.  The game could use more hand to hand fighting scenarios, which would really test the Kinects tracking and accuracy.

the journey 360 reviews

I was sceptical at first, but the game says you can sit comfortably and still use the Kinect’s features.  The seated play style is one that appeals to me, as I have never been the motion control type of gamer, so moving as little as possible is okay in my books.  Most Kinect games require a huge effort to stand up and work out, which is tough after a long day for some people.  In regards to sitting down and playing, the Kinect performed admirably, but again, it was not without some problems.  I did have repeat commands and had to sit up quite often to make it listen to me.  I was still somewhat surprised that the game was as responsive as it was while sitting down though.  The seated method for directing your horse might take some getting used to, although it is actually very easy and responsive when you know how.  Some sections are best played at a gentle trot, others force players to crack the whip, all the while avoiding debris and collecting experience orbs.  Practice makes perfect though.

Fable: The Journey is set 50 years after the events of Fable 3.  It takes place in an Albion where magic and mystery have given way to a more mundane and lucid way of life.  Adventure and magic only take place in books and told through tall tales around the proverbial campfire.  Gamers take control of Gabriel, a pretty lazy and slightly silly young man.  Never the less he possesses a good heart and loves to nap.  As per usual Gabriel nods off in the seat of his carriage and is separated from his counterparts by a collapsed bridge.  As he makes his way back to camp he happens upon Fable mainstay Theresa, who is wounded.  She is also being chased by an entity called The Corruption.  It is a classic tale of good versus evil, with destiny and courage playing a huge role in the quest to save the world.

The game is played in a first-person perspective and without the need for a conventional gamepad.  Gamers spend their time using magic while on foot or controlling Gabriel’s steed Seren.  Controlling the horse is quite easy and involves basically the pulling on virtual reins left or right, snapping them to speed up, and lifting them to slow and stop the horse.

If you work your horse too hard or neglect his wounds, he will grow slow and tired.  The drop off is noticeable and you must rest the animal often.  There are areas scattered throughout the game where you can replenish your character and horse.  Fable: The Journey forces you to have an emotional bond with the horse, kind of like having a pet that you are responsible for.  You can feed your horse water and apples to get him back up to speed and he will be loyal and love you forever.

the journey 360 reviews

The magic system, while intuitive, has a few hiccups, and again the culprit is the Kinect.  As with controlling your horse there are many issues using magic.  Repetition and practice, with a dash of patience, will get you far though.  Players begin with a lightning bolt, the ability to block, and a pull/push move, and you then start to unlock additional spells as the game progresses, but the moves remain very basic.

The casting of magic feels natural enough, when your Kinect will allow. Most times it requires little more than a hand motion or gesture like a forward thrust, and blocking is a simple matter of bringing your left arm across your chest.  Unfortunately the Kinect sensor incorrectly registers magic instead of blocking, or vise versa, causing a bit of chaos.  Aiming at specific spots can also be a trial and error affair.  The commands are simple enough that gamers can recover in time in most situations, but again frustration can occur.

Unfortunately Fable: The Journey suffers the same tragic flaws as other games in the genre.  This ‘on-rails’ game ultimately suffers from repetition.  Players really only ever perform two different tasks, leading your horse and carriage or occasionally being on foot. You can tell the development team has made an admirable effort to break each task up to try and combat any repetition, by pacing the game so that you are never on foot or in the cart too long.  The game interjects roadside distractions and an occasional rest stop, boss battle and horse chase further breaks up what would otherwise be a somewhat shallow game.

the journey 360 reviews

The game’s visuals are equally well done.  Albion has never looked this good even though most of it is seen from the back end of a horse. Players will visit a wide variety of vibrant locations that are wonderfully brought to life.  The quality is quite evident in the lush and highly detailed graphics.  The textures are generally top notch and the framerate is fairly steady.  There were some overly dark areas, like in caves, and some muddy looking locales now and then, but overall no one will be disappointed with the game’s visual look.  That being said, I had one minor issue while being on the horse and wagon.  As you venture through the beautiful countryside you do not get to explore it.  Other than camps and rest stops you are unable to dismount and check out your surroundings, in other words you cannot stop to smell the flowers.  I had a bit of a tough time with that aspect; it felt as if the game had closed in on me.

On the brighter side of things, the game’s narrative is told through a series of cut-scenes and conversations between characters.  The voice acting throughout the game is fantastic, helped by the excellent script and high production values.  The gameplay may not get you excited but the narrative is quite engaging and can help patch the gaps in the gameplay.  I loved listening to stories told by the lead characters while galloping through country roads, a far departure to previous games with huge banks of blocky text to read through.  It is a much more organic way to deliver information and really helps immerse players in the game world.  As the rest of the sound effects, they are just as solid.  From the sound of your horse, a campfire crackling, to the sounds of battle and magic being use, it is all there and all sound good.

I really wanted to like Fable: The Journey more than I did.  It has all the right elements for some great gaming with beautiful graphics, an excellent script and voice work, and the talents of a development team known for fantastic titles.  So what happened?  I would have to say the Kinect failed this game.  I had very few stretches of trouble free gaming and the issues pointed directly at it at this motion control peripheral, which is so full of promise.  At the end of the day the pacing, environment and storytelling goes someway towards offsetting the Kinect specific issues, resulting in an average game that shouldn’t fail to captivate fans of the series and some new players who are there for the ride.  If issues with using the Kinect hardware could be overcome, I for one would take this journey more than once.

In my early days as a display reviewer, I waxed fantastically about the idea of a desktop OLED monitor. The landscape in 2013 was far different than today. Then, the hot tech was IPS, and things like G-Sync and fast refresh rates were rare. I spoke about contrast, which is still the most important thing, and imagined that we would never see anything better than 1,000:1 from an LCD panel.

I don’t often eat my words, but today, I’m enjoying them with a nice remoulade. Desktop OLEDs are not just here; they’re available in force. I’m looking at my recent reviews and those I’ll be writing soon, and they’re almost all OLEDs. My fantasy has become a reality, as OLED computer monitors offer many advantages. Not only do they have true blacks, but they also deliver large color gamuts and the smoothest motion processing of any display technology. They’re literally a dream for gaming and productivity alike, making them popular among the best gaming monitors .

If you’re looking for a flat 27-inch 16:9 screen, Alienware makes a splash with its AW2725DF. It doesn’t break ground with its QHD resolution, Adaptive-Sync, HDR or wide color gamut. But it does set itself apart with a 360 Hz refresh rate. And as you’ll soon see, it’s one of the fastest monitors I’ve ever tested.

Alienware AW2725DF Specs

Speedy QHD OLEDs are fairly common, but the ones I’ve covered have topped out at 240 Hz. That’s plenty fast, and when compared to a 240 Hz LCD, the OLED is much smoother. The AW2725DF’s 0.03ms response time delivers perfect motion resolution without needing strobing or overdrive. Even a 540 Hz LCD like the Asus PG248QP won’t impart a feel and response quite like this. And here’s the best part: nearly every OLED can do this. There's no going back once you’ve seen a fast OLED in action.

The AW2725DF runs at 360 Hz without overclock. Though its QHD resolution presents a lighter workload than a 4K screen, you’ll still need a quick video card to realize its full potential. Whether it is worth the extra coin over a 240 Hz screen may be a point to consider, but there’s something else here. The AW2725DF has a significantly larger color gamut than the other 27-inch QHD gaming monitors I’ve tested, including Mini LED models.

Like any OLED, the AW2725DF isn’t super bright, but it is bright enough, with around 250 nits available for SDR content and 450 in HDR mode. Color accuracy is excellent out of the box, without needing calibration. And there’s a usable sRGB mode for those needing gamut control.

Gaming is clearly the focus here with the aforementioned 360 Hz and Adaptive-Sync . The AW2725DF hasn’t been certified by Nvidia at this writing but should be by the time you read this. It runs FreeSync from 48-360 Hz through its two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs. You also get HDMI 2.1, which works up to 144 Hz and is perfect for consoles and VRR.

Convenience is addressed with five total USB ports, including USB-C, two of which are easily accessed from the front. Internal speakers and a headphone jack are missing. There are multiple sniper modes and aiming points, plus a suite of timers and display alignment marks for multi-screen setups. Attractive LED lighting appears around the back with a large Alienware logo that plays a variety of colors and effects. Build quality is firmly in the premium category.

I have yet to find an Alienware product or an OLED screen I didn’t love, and the AW2725DF looks to carry on that tradition. Let’s take a look.

Assembly and Accessories

The AW2725DF comes in Dell ’s molded pulp packaging rather than crumbly foam. The screen, upright and base assemble without tools to create a solid unit. The base seems a bit small, but the panel is light enough to remain stable. The power supply is internal, so you get an IEC cord along with DisplayPort, DP-to-USB-C and USB-AB. There is no HDMI. You also get a soft cloth to clean the screen, a pictorial setup guide, a plastic input cover and a factory calibration data sheet whose data I verified in testing.

Product 360

If you’re sorting OLED screens by their method of glare reduction, the AW2725DF is in the glossy category, like nearly all the OLEDs I’ve reviewed. Since it’s relatively small, finding a good spot that avoids reflection isn't too hard, but you’ll want to be thoughtful. If you have specular light sources like a sunny window or a backlit keyboard, you might see these things reflected on the screen. The upside is that it’s optically pure, which means the picture is razor-sharp. This is enhanced by the AW2725DF’s tremendous contrast and highly saturated color. The bezel is flush and thin, with just a small Alienware label and a glowing power LED at the right.

The back is smooth, with a bulge for internal components that is ventilated around its perimeter. The lighting is diffuse, with an Alienware logo and “27” in large numerals. The stand can be removed to reveal a 100mm VESA mount for aftermarket arms. The upright features full ergonomics, with 5/21 degrees tilt, 20 degrees swivel, and a 4.3-inch (110mm) height adjustment. Controls consist of a backlit power button at the right and a joystick/button underneath the center.

The input panel is up and under, and once you’ve made connections, it can be concealed by a snap-on cover for a clean look. There are two DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1. The former supports QHD resolution up to 360 Hz, while the latter tops out at 144 Hz with VRR support for consoles. There is a USB-C port, but it does not appear in the input list; it only supports charging and peripherals. Additional ports include one upstream and three downstream, version 3.2. There are no internal speakers, nor is there a traditional headphone jack. But you can plug USB-C cans into the port at the front, just to the left of the joystick.

OSD Features

Pressing the AW2725DF’s joystick brings up a quick menu that shows signal info at the top of the screen and a few quick options at the bottom. These can be programmed by the user. The full OSD appears with an additional up-click.

Apologies for the large number of photos but there is a lot going on here. The Game menu starts with 12 picture modes. Standard is the default and the basis for the AW2725DF’s calibration data sheet. It is very accurate out of the box and does not require adjustment. If you want to tweak, a Creator mode includes selectable gamma curves and color gamuts. That’s where you’ll find a very accurate sRGB option. Custom Color has two-point white balance and color management functions for an even more precise image. The Game Enhance Mode includes timers, a frame rate indicator and alignment marks. The aiming points and sniper aids are found under AlienVision.

AlienFX Lighting refers to the LEDs in the back and allows control of each logo and the power button. You can specify any color and a variety of effects. In the Display menu are the HDR modes called Smart HDR. The DisplayHDR True Black mode is the best-looking and most accurate. More about that on page five.

You can view two video sources simultaneously using PIP or PBP functions. The PIP window, available in two sizes, can be in any corner, and there are five screen portioning options for PBP. If you want to program the joystick directions, the Personalize menu has that ability. You can also create one-key access to the AlienVision modes. This lets you toggle sniper or aiming aids with a single click.

Finally, the AW2725DF includes full panel and pixel refresh routines to fight burn-in. I have not experienced this phenomenon with my LG television or any of the OLED monitors I’ve reviewed. A panel health indicator in the OSD lets you know when it’s time to run the maintenance.

Alienware AW2725DF Calibration Settings

The AW2725DF’s Standard picture mode is accurate enough not to require calibration. You will see the full native gamut for all content, which covers over 110% of DCI-P3. That’s well past the SDR's sRGB spec, but most users will be happy for the extra color. If you want sRGB, choose the Creator mode and specify that gamut. Note that the other option there, DCI-P3, is the theater spec which has a very green white point. It is unsuitable for gaming or video unless the content is mastered to the actual DCI standard. My advice is to stick with Standard or Custom Color or sRGB. Recommended SDR settings are below. In HDR mode, the True Black option shows the most detail and is the most color-accurate for all HDR content.

Gaming and Hands-on

Since the AW2725DF is my first look at a 360 Hz OLED, I wanted to know what frame rates were possible using the GeForce RTX 4090 in my testbed PC. Playing Doom Eternal on max detail put enough demand on the system that it couldn’t quite sustain 360fps, but I never saw anything below 320. Even though QHD resolution presents an easier load than Ultra HD, you’ll still need some horsepower to drive the AW2725DF over 300fps.

You’ll want to do that because its smoothness and response at those speeds are simply amazing. I was sure the AW2725DF had raised my midi-chlorian count because I seemed to be able to mow down enemies with little to no effort. Input lag is perceptually non-existent, and no matter how quickly I moved, detail remained perfectly rendered. There is absolutely no softness or motion blur, regardless of the situation. Taken purely as a gaming monitor, the AW2725DF has few, if any, equals.

The image was stunning in every respect. I know that’s something I say about all OLEDs, but that doesn’t make it untrue. No LCD technology can deliver the deep blacks, broad contrast and perceptual color saturation of an OLED like the AW2725DF. Its larger than average color gamut showed up in everything I did, HDR and SDR. SDR games like Tomb Raider were extremely colorful, almost too much so since that title is mastered in the sRGB space. But I can’t bring myself to say there’s too much color, even when there is. I never felt the need for the sRGB mode when playing SDR games.

It was handy when returning to the workday, though. Photo and graphics editing is easier when you have a usable sRGB mode available. The AW2725DF’s is spot-on at reference level. The Creator mode is a handy tool. If your work extends to the film industry, the DCI-P3 mode matches the cinema spec and can be used for post-production. While most pros will have a high-end mastering monitor available for this, it’s nice to know you can get much the same performance from the $900 AW2725DF rather than something like SmallHD’s 4K 27-inch OLED that costs $11,999.

Mini LED screens might have higher brightness, but in practice, the AW2725DF had more than enough light output for my office and its sunlit window. I had to take some care to place it where the screen would not pick up reflections but other than that, there is no reason I couldn’t use this display every day for any task. It’s a great productivity tool that happens to be one of the best gaming monitors out there.

Takeaway: When considering 27-inch flat gaming monitors, I can’t imagine anything better than the AW2725DF. It delivers a stunning image for SDR and HDR and has otherworldly smoothness and response. It does everything well thanks to superb sharpness, contrast and color saturation.

  • cknobman While amazing I wont buy into an OLED monitor until they are $500 or less. Not into spending 900+ on a computer monitor for gaming. Reply
  • oofdragon HYEAH this is what Im talking about!! When they come out with a 144hz in 2024 I just believe they deserve to lose money and end up selling those at a loss after they gathered dust so long on the shelves that they must give it a brutal discount in order to clean inventory. Make it 240hz minimum or gtfo. Now this 360hz may cost $900 but this is also the price of a GPU to run games on it at 360fps, if gaming is something important for you save for it, work double shifts, buy it and enjoy. I don't think there's much of a noticeable difference from a monitor like this vs a 240hz, there are some pennies tombe saved going for the lower Hz if you insist. My next monitor though.. I want it even 480hz! Lol. Like I'm okay selling my 240hz to get the 360hz and when the 480hz is out I'll sell it again. We are going to die anyways people, if the tech is here let us enjoy it. Reply

‘Spy x Family Code: White’ Review: Espionage and Culinary Adventure Collide in an Amusing Anime Spinoff

Takashi Katagiri, who directed season 2 of the series, continues the characters' journey with some inconsequential fun in the franchise's first feature.

Spy x Family Code: White

“ Spy x Family Code: White” is a fun, accessible jumping-on point for anyone unfamiliar with the “Spy x Family” anime, or the manga on which it’s based. However, in slowing down to let newcomers catch up, it tends to lack momentum. The plot isn’t strictly tied to the the comic or the show’s two seasons (it’s yet to be renewed for a third), but it picks up with the same basic premise: a found family with secret lives and abilities, which they keep guarded from one another, while a non-specific political conflict looms on the horizon.

Popular on Variety

In fact, while the dangers of this conflict brew in the background, Loid, Yor and Anya set off on an mostly unrelated, much more whimsical adventure that feels only tangentially connected to the larger conflict (and doesn’t actually collide with it until nearly an hour in). In order to help Anya get closer to her target classmate, Loid plans to help her win a baking competition at school, for which he suggests making a famous, tart-like dessert native to a snowy, Swiss-inspired region. He has covert reasons for wanting to travel there, but the confectionary contest ends up being a good excuse to keep the family together for most of the film.

Director Takashi Katagiri , who also helmed the show’s second season, takes a farcical approach to this unserious plot set against a deathly serious backdrop. Scenes of grocery shopping at a winter market arrive with the bustling intensity of a reconnaissance mission, while lists of ingredients are handled and presented with all the pomp and circumstance of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Before long, an overtly fascist military leader crosses paths with the family and not only steals their fancy dessert, but secretly threatens to plunge the world into war — two consequences the movie treats with equal weight and urgency. It’s all a bit goofy, but it means to be.

“Spy x Family Code: White” is far more chuckle-worthy than laugh-out-loud funny, but there’s an innocent, adolescent charm to even its jokes that miss the mark. The big-screen budget allows Katagiri a sense of fluidity and visual freedom, so he presents action scenes in dynamic motion (compared to the show’s more static sequences). While the recurring gags rarely extend beyond poop jokes, kids in the audience will probably get a kick out of the whole affair. The film does try to be serious and sentimental at times — often to no avail — but at least it’s never boring.

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey is a heartwrenching Filipino drama about a woman with cancer setting out to complete her bucket list together with her husband and childhood friend. It’s a beautiful and compelling piece of filmmaking about what truly matters.

I must warn you though, this film will make you very sad.

A Journey opens with cancer survivor Shane, her husband Bryan, and their best friend Kristoff, aka Tupe, celebrating her 39th birthday at a karaoke bar. Kristoff is a famous television actor and Bryan works as his manager while Shane runs a coffee shop. The three have been friends since childhood, while Bryan and Shane have been in love for just as long.

Not long after her birthday, Shane notices some worrying symptoms and goes to her oncologist. The news is devastating, Shane’s cancer has returned. After having suffered through chemo once before, Shane doesn’t want treatment this time. Instead, she wants to spend whatever time she has left getting through her “magic list” with Bryan and Tupe’s help. The list includes some fun items like seeing penguins, going snorkeling, and recreating her first date with Bryan, but also emotionally heavy goals like reconnecting with her estranged father.

A Journey (via Netflix)

A Journey is a heartfelt drama exploring themes of love, friendship, and the things that matter when faced with mortality. It may start with a bad karaoke scene, but this isn’t a feel-good romance where everything is honky dory in the end. The film offers an honest (and depressing) exploration of the often tragic reality of the human condition.

A devastated Bryan seems to accept his wife’s decision and even quits his job to spend time with her. He does, however, have an ulterior motive as he’s hoping Shane will agree to start her cancer treatments once the magic list is complete. Wanting to help, Tupe organizes an all-expenses paid trip to Tasmania for the trio. Shane is apprehensive about allowing her friend to pay for such an expensive trip, but she eventually relents.

A Journey | Image via Netflix

As lighthearted as the trio tries to be during their trip, the finality of their actions is never far from our minds. One compelling scene is where Tupe and Bryan debate whether life is about the journey or the destination. For Tupe, it’s about the destination, but Bryan sees the journey as more important. Shane, however, is acutely aware of how important each moment is and wants to spend her time making the most of it.

The premise of a cancer patient choosing to live to the fullest in their final months has been done before, most notably in the 2007 tearjerker The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. However, a movie doesn’t need to have a never-before-seen synopsis to be good. And that’s precisely what A Journey is. It’s a touching story about three childhood friends finding meaning in their lives in the face of devastating adversity.

I also broke down A Journey’s ending if you wanted some emotional support after that crushing climax. You can also read more about Penguin, Tasmania , where the movie was filmed.

Who are The Blue Nile? About the Scottish band named by Swift

the journey 360 reviews

Kaetlyn Liddy

In the album's ninth track, "Guilty As Sin?," Swift name drops a beloved 80s Scottish band, The Blue Nile.

"Drowning in The Blue Nile. He sent me 'Downtown Lights.' I hadn’t heard it in a while," Swift says in the song.

"Downtown Lights," released in 1989, was the peak of The Blue Nile's commercial success in the U.S., with the song reaching No. 10 on the Billboard American Modern Rock Tracks chart. 1989 is also Swift's birth year and the title of her fifth studio album.

Known for their avoidance of publicity, The Blue Nile has released just four albums since their formation in 1981.

Fans share their theories, joy on social media

It wouldn't be a new Taylor Swift album without fans wondering who it's about or decoding the names mentioned in each song. (Who is Cassandra , Taylor?)

That speculation will surely continue, but now that the album is out, fans can't believe their luck. Reactions on social media praised the sonic and lyrical range of the album, saying "everybody gets everything," whether you listen to Swift for her synth-pop hits or her intimate folk songs.

Author and creator John Green couldn't wait to wake up his daughter to tell her she gets 31 new Taylor Swift songs today.

Daysia Tolentino

As Swifties show their love for "The Tortured Poets Department" on TikTok, they have the chance to be featured in a "Fan Spotlight" carousel that highlights videos with the #TORTUREDPOETSDEPARTMENT hashtag.

TikTok released a "Taylor Swift In-App Experience" that serves as a landing page for all things "TTPD." Fans can complete challenges in exchange for limited-edition "TTPD" profile frames and some Taylor-related searches unlock animations inspired by the album. Searches for "Taylor Swift," "Taylor Nation," and "The Tortured Poets Department" lead fans to the landing page.

The features are particularly notable because Swift's music was pulled off the platform earlier this year as part of a disput between TikTok and Universal Music Group, though many of her tracks returned earlier this month .

Fans on TikTok have already been loving "TTPD," sharing numerous theories , tears and rankings .

That didn't take long.

The song "Fornight" off Swift's new album quickly hit No. 1 on Apple's top song chart. It features rapper and singer Post Malone.

Swift also took the next four spots with "The Tortured Poets Department," "So Long, London," "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toy," and "Down Bad."

The National's Aaron Dessner on working with Swift: 'some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic' songs

Aaron Dessner, a musician who is part of the rock band The National, posted to Instagram about working with Swift on the album along with a pic of her in a studio.

He said that he has now worked with swift on more than 60 songs, including 17 across her newest release.

"I am forever grateful to Taylor for sharing her insane talents with and trusting me with her music. I believe these songs are some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic Taylor has ever written and I am continually astonished by her skills as a songwriter and performer," he wrote, adding in thanks to a long list of other artists and producers.

Will Swift break her own streaming records?

The October 2022 release of Swift's 10th studio album, "Midnights" shattered records on Spotify and Apple Music.

"Midnights" became Spotify's most-streamed album in a single day with 184.6 million streams when it debuted. Swift also broke the record for most-streamed artist in a single day on Spotify with 228 million streams.

The album also become the biggest album of all time by a female artist in Apple Music history by first-day and first-week streams worldwide.

As Swift became increasingly synonymous with American pop culture, universities around the country started creating entire courses dedicated to studying her lyricism and impact.

Some courses focus on Swift as a business and marketing mastermind, while others analyze her storytelling techniques with all the detail and skill of poetry analysis.

Time will tell whether this new album will inspire yet another college course. Our guess is with all the literary references, it's sure to be on some professors minds.

Saturday is Record Store Day

The release of "The Tortured Poets Department" will come just in time for a notable day in the music industry calendar: Record Store Day on April 20. The annual event has been observed since 2007 to celebrate independent record stores and is often accompanied by exclusive drops by major artists.

Swift has yet to announce a special event, but the date is marked in the TTPD Timetable on her Instagram, suggesting she might have something up her sleeve.

Swift describes new album: 'Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.'

the journey 360 reviews

Patrick Smith

Taylor Swift has offered fans a glimpse into the creative process behind "The Tortured Poets Society" and the emotions that inspired it.

In a press release Friday morning to accompany the new release, the artist said:

"The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.

"This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted.

"This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.

"And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry."

To sleep or stream? Swifties question staying up even later

Can you wait until the morning to listen to the 15 extra songs on Swift's anthology?

If you answered no, you're not alone. Online, fans joked that they didn't expect to get this little shut eye.

Among the fans: Gen Z Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla.

"I got votes in the morning. Do I sleep or listen" he wrote .

Others had similar thoughts.

"TAYLOR I HAVE A JOB OH MY GOD" wrote one fan, tagging the artist on X .

"lol Taylor I have to get up early to run errands before work please" wrote another X user.

Leave it to Swift to give us adrenaline to keep us all up a little longer.

'The Tortured Poets Department' becomes Swift's longest album

With the surprise release of 15 additional songs, "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology" has 31 tracks.

That now makes it Swift's longest album, edging ahead of "Red (Taylor's Version)" by just one track.

A list of all 15 of the extra 'Anthology' songs

  • “The Black Dog”
  • “imgonnagetyouback”
  • “The Albatross”
  • “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus”
  • “How Did It End?”
  • “So High School”
  • “I Hate It Here”
  • “thanK you aiMee”
  • “I Look in People’s Windows”
  • “The Prophecy”
  • “Cassandra”
  • “The Bolter”
  • “The Manuscript”

Surprise: a double album!

"The Tortured Poets Department" is a secret DOUBLE album.

In a 2 a.m. ET surprise, Swift announced an extra 15 songs.

"I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology," she wrote on X . "15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours."

It's 2 a.m.

Now what, Taylor?

ICYMI: Swift's powerhouse publicist Tree Paine gets profiled by WSJ

Swift's longtime publicist, Tree Paine, whom many fans know by name, was the subject of a lengthy Wall Street Journal article published Thursday ahead of the new album's release.

While she declined to be interviewed for the story, it delves into how she became one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry since she joined Swift's camp in 2014.

“There isn’t a publicist in NY, LA or Nashville that wouldn’t jump at an opportunity to work with someone as talented as Taylor Swift and her management team,” Paine said at the time, according to the New York Post .

Couples are now wary of Swift's 'Lover' as a love song

Elena Nicolaou, TODAY

“Lover” — at least until recently — was widely received as one of Swift’s classic love songs. When the album of the same name came out in 2019, its title single was declared  first dance song material , or even a “ wedding waltz .”

In the song, Swift paints a portrait of quiet intimacy. Her wild “Red” days, of thrilling romances with highs and lows and uncertainties in between, had settled into something steadier with one person, captured by a simple chorus: “You’re my, my, my, my lover.”

But that interpretation is now in question, as Swift recasts some of her songs in a different light. Ahead of the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,”  she released five playlists on Apple Music , sorting old songs into groups inspired by the five stages of grief, or “heartbreak.”

Aaron Dessner is credited as a songwriter on five of 16 tracks

Dessner, who is a member of the bands The National and Big Red Machine, is one of two producers who worked on "The Tortured Poets Department."

He's credited as a songwriter on five of the 16 tracks on the standard album.

Dessner first collaborated with Swift on her eighth studio album, “Folklore,” for which he shared in the Grammy win for album of the year. He made several guest appearances with Swift on the U.S. leg of the Eras Tour, joining her onstage during the acoustic set for performances of songs they wrote together.

Here's what some critics are saying in their reviews

the journey 360 reviews

Angela Yang

The critics have spoken. Here's a roundup of some of their takeaways on "The Tortured Poets Department."

Billboard ’s Jason Lipshutz praised Swift’s boldness for releasing a “knowingly messy, wildly unguarded breakup album” at what’s arguably the peak of her career. It's more mature than her past heartbreak albums, he writes, and “not everyone will love it, but the ones who get it will adore it fiercely.”

Variety ’s Chris Willman wrote that the album can serve as an “unapologetically dramatic” soundtrack to listeners’ own heartbreaks.

Labeling it Swift’s most personal album yet, Rolling Stone ’s Rob Sheffield described it as “the cathartic confession of a woman who thought she had adulthood — and adult romance — all figured out, only to find herself realizing she knows nothing.”

And unlike on past albums, Swift doesn’t portray herself as a victim in this one, wrote the Los Angeles Times ’ Mikael Wood. Instead, the album emanates “a proudly villainous energy as Swift embraces her messiest and most chaotic tendencies.”

Jack Antonoff, Swift's longtime collaborator, posts love for album

Antonoff, Swift’s longtime collaborator and friend, shared his love for the new album on X .

"Love this album more than I can say," wrote Antonoff, who worked on “The Tortured Poets Department” as a producer.

Antonoff also co-wrote eight of the album's tracks.

Swifties are starting to post reax on X

In typical fashion after a Swift album drops, reactions from fans are pouring in online, and they TEND TO COME IN ALL CAPS.

As any Swiftie will tell you, listening to new music from the artist always proves to be a collective emotional experience.

Spotify appears to be holding it together (so far)

The last time Swift debuted a brand-new album, Spotify crashed. No major issues so far this time around.

Shoutout to the engineers and people behind the scenes who are probably working overtime to make sure Swifties don't panic.

Swift releases statement after album drop

In her first social media post after “The Tortured Poets Department” was released, Swift shared a statement about the album online.

These songs reflect her experiences from a moment in time that was equally “sensational and sorrowful,” she wrote, adding that it is a chapter now closed.

“Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it,” Swift wrote. “And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

Who is Clara Bow?

the journey 360 reviews

Daniel Arkin

The 16th and final track on the album is named for Clara Bow, one of the leading lights of Hollywood’s silent era.

Bow, unlike a lot of stars from the 1920s, managed to successfully pivot to roles in talkies by the end of the decade. She co-starred in “Wings” (1927), which today is probably best known as the first movie to win the Oscar for best picture.

I’m not a Swiftie, so I don’t have much insight into how Taylor’s music connects to Bow’s acting career — but I’m curious how this track will be interpreted by the die-hards.

Bars, venues hold special Swift parties

On the eve of Swift’s album drop, event venues across the country (and around the world) hosted release parties so Swifties could get their first listen of the “The Tortured Poets Department” on the dance floor.

At Pianos in New York, music from across Swift’s discography will play until the new album drops at midnight. Attendees are encouraged to come in themed outfits and friendship bracelets, and the bar will be serving Swift-inspired cocktails.

In Los Angeles, El Cid is hosting a listening party complete with fan-made merch, giveaways and a themed wall for photos. Attendees can also expect performances from drag queen Jade Jolie, who appeared in Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video.

Several Swiftie-themed events are also being held across the Washington, D.C., area, according to The Washington Post, which compiled a list .

A Swiftie mom and daughter are hosting their own album party

Kristie Gilmore, 36, is ready to celebrate with her daughter, who was born shortly after Swift's “1989” album and has been a Swiftie ever since.

Kristie Gilmore is hosting a TTPD party in the suburbs of Boston.

Gilmore decorated her Boston-area apartment with balloons, signs and stickers in the color palette of “The Tortured Poets Department.” She sprinkled the table with handmade confetti of the album’s logo and made TTPD-themed “membership cards” for themselves and each of her daughter’s friends.

“They’ve been counting down since Taylor announced this album,” Gilmore said, adding, “They’re just hanging out, having a dance party. They’re gonna try to stay up till midnight and listen to it.”

What are the track lengths?

The average track length on “The Tortured Poets Department” is 4 minutes and 4 seconds, making it the third longest album across Swift’s discography.

The longest song is “But Daddy I Love Him,” which clocks in at 5 minutes and 40 seconds.

“I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” is the shortest song, at 2 minutes and 36 seconds.

Travis Kelce shared his early thoughts about the album

Ahead of the Super Bowl, Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, weighed in on the new album.

“I have heard some of it, yes. It is unbelievable,”  Kelce said . “I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops.”

The couple , who have become the internet's favorite love story , were most recently spotted at Coachella 's first weekend.

Swift's music is back on TikTok despite UMG dispute

the journey 360 reviews

Kalhan Rosenblatt

Some songs that Swift fans know “All Too Well” returned to TikTok this month, months after they were removed.

The songs were among the many tracks Universal Music Group pulled off TikTok after the label and the platform  failed to reach an agreement  this year. (UMG has no relationship to NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.)

UMG, known as one of the “Big Three” global music companies, cleared its music from TikTok in late January, saying it was doing so because of a lack of compensation for artists and songwriters. TikTok previously fired back at UMG, accusing the company of putting “their own greed above the interests of artists and songwriters.”

The economics of 'The Tortured Poets Department'

Doha Madani

Die-hard Taylor Swift fans will be spending a pretty penny on her latest album release as she releases four variants of the album with one exclusive track each.

Each variant of “The Tortured Poets Department” is named after the bonus song found at the end of the album: “The Manuscript,” “The Bolter,” “The Albatross” and “The Black Dog.” If a fan wanted to collect them all, the minimum for $13.99 CDs at a store would cost at least $55.96 before taxes.

Longtime Swifties are already familiar with her tendency to provide deluxe editions, as anyone who was around for her original “1989” release can recall the Target exclusive that included three bonus tracks and three voice memos recorded by Swift.

Her “Midnights” release included a Target exclusive track that was added to streaming only months later, and in May she released a new song on “Midnights (The Late Night Edition).” But this is the first time Swift has put an exclusive song on each individual variant, with no clear timeline for when they might be added to streaming.

2024: The year of Post Malone and the pop girlies

Rebecca Cohen

portrait face tattoos

Fresh off of a collab with Beyoncé on "LEVII'S JEANS" from her now-famed "Cowboy Carter," Post Malone finds himself on another major release of 2024: Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department."

He joins Swift on the album's first song, "Fortnight." Swift announced that "Fortnight" would be the album's lead single and the song for which she is releasing a music video 8 o'clock tomorrow night.

"I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever," Swift wrote on social media. "I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight."

While best known for more rap-focused songs, Post Malone is clearly making the rounds in the pop music scene, having also recently collaborated with Noah Kahan on "Dial Drunk." But his back-to-back appearances on arguably two of the biggest albums from pop artists this year raise the questions: Is Post Malone becoming a pop girlie? Is he just having a moment? Or is it all of the above?

There's a book about Swift's impact headed to bookshelves

Rolling Stone writer and music historian Rob Sheffield's book "Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music" will debut Nov. 12.

He's expected to dive further into Swift’s music and fan connection.

Swifties are celebrating with their own listening parties

Many Swifties are sharing their elaborate party setups online as they prepare to celebrate the album release at home.

Karen Rothdeutsch, 25, has decked out her bedroom in upstate New York with “The Tortured Poets Department”-themed decorations, complete with a platter of homemade cupcakes decorated to match Swift’s various vinyl variants.

swiftie party

“I just made my space a little more immersive for my first listen,” Rothdeutsch told NBC News. “I’ll be sitting in my bed with a box of tissues and a notebook, writing down my thoughts and probably checking into Twitter every so often to see what everybody’s thinking about it.”

She said she procured the decorations over the course of several weeks, but the whole setup cost her less than $100. While she decorates on a budget, she said she did splash out on the vinyl variants and collector’s edition CDs.

Swift's new album is already breaking a Spotify record

Spotify said on X that the “The Tortured Poets Department” became the most pre-saved album countdown page in the streaming service’s history.

Since its launch on March 28, TTPD's countdown page has ticked down to the album’s drop, now just hours away.

Was Swift's Grammys dress a 'Fortnight' Easter egg?

The white gown Swift wore to the 2024 Grammys, where she announced "The Tortured Poets Department," appears to have been an Easter egg.

taylor swift full length whote dress red carpet grammys

Swift appears to be wearing a very similar dress in the teaser for the "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)" music video, which will debut 8 p.m. ET tomorrow.

Swift was also pictured hugging Post Malone at the ceremony. Some fans online pointed out a similar shot of the two singers that appears in the teaser for the music video.

Swift drops 'Fortnight' music video teaser

Swift blessed fans with a teaser for “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)," the album's first single.

"At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings. Album tonight. Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et," Swift wrote in a post on X , which was accompanied by a short video clip.

The black-and-white teaser gave a sneak peak of the visuals for the music video. It's a combination of dramatic period gowns and a bleak medical setting in this supercut that is reminiscent of "Poor Things," which Swift's longtime friend Emma Stone recently won the best actress Oscar for.

Swift had announced she'd be dropping a music video at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow by sharing a “TTPD Timetable” on her Instagram page this week.

Merch is here — and already selling out

Hours before the album’s release, themed merchandise for “The Tortured Poets Department” is now available to order online.

The merch drop includes hoodies, crewnecks and gold jewelry branded with the album’s logo. A display case for the album vinyls seemingly sold out within minutes.

ICYMI: The Eras Tour concert film is on Disney+

In case you need something to do as you count down to the new album, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is on Disney+. Swift announced the film would be available for streaming in February.

The film features all songs from the three Los Angeles tour dates during which it was filmed at SoFi Stadium. They include “cardigan,” as well as four additional acoustic surprise songs from the tour: “I Can See You,” “Maroon,” “You Are in Love” and “Death by a Thousand Cuts.”

Swifties online are freaking out over purported ‘leaks’

The internet was at it again this week, with some online circulating what they said were leaks of Swift's new album. It is unclear from where and when the apparent leaks originated, but one Reddit thread is already filled with commentary.

As early as Tuesday, "taylor swift leak" appeared to be blocked from searches on X. Instead, when a user tried to search the phrase, a blank page popped up with the message, "Something went wrong. Try reloading."

The secret message has been decoded

The sixth and final word of the secret message, “mortem,” was revealed today, hidden in the lyrics of the song “Begin Again.”

The complete secret message is: “We hereby conduct this post mortem.”

In a collaboration with Apple Music, Swift sorted some of her existing songs into thematic playlists , along with audio messages from her.

The messages seemed to confirm some fans’ theories that the playlists mirrored the five stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance — indicating that the new album may grapple with grief or loss. Swift later used a song from each playlist to reveal a hidden word on Apple Music every day leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift sets fans loose on an international puzzle

Swifties had a big day yesterday after murals with QR codes were unveiled in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris and Chicago.

Fans stumbled upon the murals, which Swift had not announced, and scanned them to find a link to a YouTube Shorts video. Every mural had a unique code that led to a different video, each revealing a new letter as part of a word puzzle.

Fans came together online to help decode the puzzle, which seemed to hint at the new album's first track, because it spelled out "for a fortnight."

Swifties in Los Angeles flock to Spotify pop-up library

Many Los Angeles Swifties celebrated the new album with a pop-up library installation in partnership with Spotify.

The three-day event, which runs through today at The Grove, featured a sneak peek at some of the album's lyrics.

Fans posted videos of themselves lined up for hours to get a glimpse at the installation.

A manuscript was front and center at the installation, revealing new lyrics periodically as the pages were turned over the course of three days.

Many fans online tried to identify other potential Easter eggs in the pop-up library, such as a bust of a peace sign, quill and fountain pens and a globe that appeared to be pointing to Florida, the name of a track on the album.

Why is the album called 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

Fans were quick to note that “The Tortured Poets Department” is the longest title for a Taylor Swift album by a large margin, a distinction previously held by her third album, "Speak Now." Before "TTPD," "Speak Now" was her only album title consisting of more than one word.

Speculation surrounding the new album and its uncharacteristic title has primarily revolved around Swift’s  2023 breakup  with British actor Joe Alwyn after their six-year relationship.

After the album announcement, a  2022 Variety interview  between Alwyn and Paul Mescal resurfaced on X. The pair revealed in the interview that they were both members of a WhatsApp group chat titled the Tortured Man Club, prompting some fans to  draw parallels  between Alwyn and Swift’s upcoming album.

The true meaning of “The Tortured Poets Department” remains to be seen, but the album's rollout has featured references to famous poems like Charles Baudelaire’s “The Albatross,” among other literary references.

Clues keep coming

Speculation continues to grow over clues for lyrics, song titles and the album’s first music video.

Not much from Miss Swift so far

It's been a notably quiet rollout for "The Tortured Poets Department."

No themed Instagram grid overhaul, no lead singles, not even a cryptic calendar leading Swifties on wild goose chases for potential Easter eggs.

A week before the release, Taylor Swift was rocking out at Coachella instead of feeding her fans who are desperate for a hint of what's to come.

Aside from a hand-painted QR code on the side of a building in Chicago, a planned exhibit at The Grove in Los Angeles in partnership with Spotify and a quick video released Tuesday that appears to leave the "Midnights" era in the dust as viewers tour The Tortured Poets Department, Swift has been silent on what we can expect.

In the video , posted to her Instagram account, we did get a glimpse of a schedule that only showed release day, and on it, the promise of a music video on Friday at 8 p.m. ET. Fourteen tick marks beneath led some to think the music video could be for the 14th track on the album, or for the leading song, "Fortnight," since a fortnight is 14 days.

Swifties believing in the latter theory proved to be correct. Swift announced that the music video would be for "Fortnight" in a Thursday afternoon social media post.

Swifties online continue to grasp for any details to try to figure out what this mastermind might have in store for her beloved fan base.

What songs are on the new album?

Here's what songs are on the track list.

  • "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
  • "Fresh Out the Slammer"
  • "Florida!!! (Florence + the Machine)"
  • "Guilty as Sin?"
  • "Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?"
  • "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"
  • "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"
  • "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"
  • "The Alchemy"
  • "Clara Bow"

Swift has also announced four bonus tracks: "The Manuscript," “The Bolter,” “The Albatross” and “The Black Dog.” Each bonus track will be available on a separate vinyl variant and won't be on the streaming version of the album.

When does 'The Tortured Poets Department' drop?

Swift's 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," will be released Friday at 12 a.m. ET, or 9 p.m. PT.

It will be available for purchase on vinyl, on cassette, as a digital album and in CD form. It will also be on several streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.

But if you plan to stream “The Tortured Poets Department” right after its release, be prepared for potential delays. When Swift’s most recent brand-new album, “Midnights,” was released, Spotify  briefly crashed  because of intense demand.

Someone Found A McDonald's N64 Kiosk Filled With Xbox 360 Games In Their Dentist's Office

While you wait for your cleaning, you can grab a controller and play some doritos crash course.

An image shows two photos of the N64-looking Xbox 360 kiosk.

A Reddit user found something quite odd inside their dentist’s waiting room: An old McDonald’s N64 video game kiosk that had been converted into an Xbox 360 arcade complete with multiple controllers and games.

Related Content

The dentist’s office waiting room can be a tense place as you wait to start whatever procedure brought you there. Even a simple cleaning or check-up can cause a lot of stress, especially for younger kids who might have had a few bad experiences with the teeth cleaners. So instead of them playing games on your phone and killing the battery or making them read five-month-old issues of a random fashion magazine, why not let them play some Xbox 360 to distract them from their upcoming root canal? At least one dentist seems to think that’s a pretty good idea.

On April 16, Reddit user Asleep-Tumbleweed-99 posted some images on the Xbox 360 subreddit of an Xbox 360 kiosk hanging out in his dentist’s waiting room.

“Pretty cool. [ Doritos Crash Course ] is what I see on one of them and the other just has the scoreboard up,” explained Asleep-Tumbleweed-99. “It was for little kids in the dentist so I didn’t want to actually play it as I’m almost 30 and don’t want to seem like a creep LOL.”

While they didn’t play it, the user “had to post” about the discovery, adding: “You don’t see these much anymore especially an old Xbox 360 one.”

Quickly others chimed in, pointing out that the kiosk in the office looked a lot like the N64 machines found inside some McDonald’s restaurants back in the late 90s and early 2000s. However, digging a bit deeper, this isn’t simply an old N64 kiosk that has had some Xbox 360 consoles shoved in it.

The real story behind this Xbox 360 dentist kiosk

At first, I thought someone took an old kiosk and cleaned it up, removed the McDonald’s logo from the tall pole sticking out the top, repainted the red dome silver, and pulled out the old screens and consoles. Those were then replaced with three devices from a company called KidzPace , which sells self-contained video game units designed for restaurants, businesses, hospitals, hotels, and basically anywhere else bored kids might be waiting around.

However, digging deeper, I discovered that this unit is not a refurbished ‘90s kiosk, but a product that KidzPace used to sell. A rep told me they no longer offer the Xbox 360 model. But I found a 2017 YouTube video posted by the company that shows it off.

Looking closely, it’s likely the company reused leftover shells from those old N64 kiosks because—after I did more research—I discovered that KidzPace made those old McDonald’s machines back in the day, too. In fact, they still make games for the fast-food giant to this day.

If you are curious, buying just one Xbox Series S standalone play unit from KidzPace in 2024 will cost you $3395 and that doesn’t include shipping, a rep told me. Yikes!

Anyway, so uh, what were we talking about again?

Oh right, yeah that weird old Xbox 360 kiosk in the dentist’s office someone posted on Reddit. Yeah, it’s real. It was a thing you could buy, and it’s probably not made from an actual old McDonald’s N64 kiosk. But it likely shares some DNA with those nostalgic devices and maybe some plastic, too.

I’m going to stop digging into this now before I find some new piece of info that leads me down another rabbit hole.
