Expert Advice
Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

Enjoy la bella vita in Italy
Beauty is everywhere in Italy—its spectacular scenery, rich history, lavish artistic masterpieces, and its beloved cuisine. Discover the romance of Italy when you fall in love with this legendary country.
Venice's Grand Canal is lined with grand, ornately adorned buildings dating back to the 13th to 18th centuries.
Roman Colosseum
Rome's architectural marvel allowed 50,000 spectators to view gladiatorial contests, wild animal hunts—including bears, elephants, and giraffes—and even "sea battles" on water channeled in via aqueducts.
- Sistine Chapel
A restoration of Michelangelo's richly painted ceiling frescoes in the late 20th century not only removed layers of dirt and grime—it also erased the fig leaves and loincloths that Pope Pius IV had added to the nude figures in the 1500s.
Perched on a cliff of volcanic rock, overlooking the verdant valleys of Umbria, Orvieto is full of rich history, from its gorgeous stone buildings to the elaborate system of tunnels and wells built beneath the city by the ancient Etruscans.
The volcanic ash that blanketed Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD preserved its contents so well that archaeologists found loaves of bread, walnuts, figs, and eggs among the ruins.
The charming coastal city of Sorrento is built into the cliffs above its world-class beaches and crystalline seas.
Duomo in Florence
It took two centuries to create the cathedral in Florence, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and artistry. Step inside for a few minutes to enjoy the gorgeous frescoes inside the dome.
Historic Bologna has become legendary for its cuisine, including the Bolognese sauce that bears its name.
- Trevi Fountain
It's tradition to throw coins over your left shoulder, using your right hand, when you visit the grand Trevi Fountain in Rome. Throwing just one ensures that you'll return to Rome someday, while tossing two more coins into the fountain means your wishes for love and marriage will come true.
Italian Cuisine

Visiting Italy in October: all you need to know
Visiting Italy in October: all you need to know to plan a trip! The best places to visit in October in Italy, when to book what, what to expect from the weather.
October is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit Italy.
A month of transition, October looks very different in the north of Italy and the South and the type of experience you are going to have will depend largely on your exact destination.
However, in most cases, in October Italy will treat you to fall atmospheres made of mild temperatures, beautiful foliage and earthy foods from harvest festivals.
I adore Italy in October. I am from Rome and while I travel around Italy in all seasons, October always makes these trips a little extra special.
The colors, the temperature, the harvest food, the busy-yet-not-excessive crowds make my beautiful country even more pleasant in October. Today I share my best tips for visiting at this time so you can make the most of this wonderful month!
Please note : this is a seasonal travel guide about Italy in October, meant to help you decide the best time of the year for your visit. For official information and travel advisory that may affect your trip, please refer to your Government travel advisory. Check here for official info if traveling from US , Canada , UK , Ireland , Australia , New Zealand .

The weather in Italy in October: what to expect
October is the start of autumn in Italy.
It is a time when trees start donning their autumnal colors and the temperature starts to drop, more rapidly in the North and on the mountains and more subtly in the Central and Southern Regions of Italy, as the season progresses.
At the start of October, you can assume temperatures are likely to be mild during the day and a little colder in the evening. You are likely to want to have t-shirt at lunchtime but a light jacket at dinner.
Towards the end of the month, temperatures tend to be significantly colder, a mid-season jacket being important to have in most places, for most of the day.
Overall, temperatures in Italy in October are mild and you can expect a mix of sunny and rainy days.
In terms of clothing, if traveling around Italy in October, is is best to think of this time as one for long pants, short and long-sleeve shirts and light jackets although in the central hours of the day, especially in the South, you may get temperatures so mild to allow for short sleeves.
Overall, October in Italy is not a time for swimming in the sea although, in the South, it is not unheard of to have nice beach days at the beginning of this month!
To give you an idea of temperature, historically the temperatures for October in Italy were:
- Milan: Max 18C Min 11C Rain: 6 days
- Bolzano (Dolomites): Max 18C Min 7C
- Rome: Max 22C Min 12C Rain: 7 days
- Palermo: Max24C Min 18C Rain: 6 days
October festivities in Italy you need to know about
4 October : San Francesco – marked especially in Assisi, where several religious ceremonies in honor of the city’s most beloved sun take place on the night of the 3rd and the day of the 4th of October each year.
This is usually not a day off for offices and it should not affect your ability to visit museums and attractions.
Small centers with a strong Franciscan vocation are likely to have special festivals or markets to mark the occasion.
31 October – Halloween.
While not traditionally an Italian holiday, Halloween has well and truly arrived as a festivity, especially for kids.
Some themed events are organized in city museums and parks and costumes (any theme, not just scary ones) are encouraged.
How crowded is Italy in October?
October is still high tourism season in most of Italy and this is reflected in the number of people you’ll find in the most famous areas and the cost of accommodation.
Rome in particular is very busy in October and especially in the last few years, when heat and crowds have made the summers less appealing, Sorrento and Florence are also busy at this time, especially at the start of the month.
As the month progresses crowds diminish; however, the All Saints Break sees holidays both in Italy and abroad, so the last week of October is also often a very popular one with tourists.
if traveling to Italy in October, advance booking of accommodation and main attractions is a must.
The best places to visit in Italy in October
Rome in october.
October in Rome is famous for crisp, bright days and wonderful fall colors.
We locals even have a name for the glorious days of autumn in Rome: ‘Ottobrate Romane’.
This term historically indicated the day trips wealthy Roman families would take in October, making the most of the last bright days of the season to enjoy a day on the lake or in the country and nowadays simply indicated the stunning weather the city usually experiences at this time.
I adore Rome in October: my hometown is wonderful at this time!
If going to Italy in October, you can easily enjoy Rome at its best, although you won’t be alone: Rome is busy at this time and securing tickets in advance is paramount.
The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Vatican Museums, all of Rome’s beautiful piazzas will reward your travel planning with beautiful colors and (usually) the perfect sightseeing weather.
You can learn what makes October in Rome special here
Venice in October
October is a lovely time in Venice, a moment when the city has a more intimate feel than at many other times.
The weather is hit and miss and you will have less daylight hours than if you came in the spring.
However, the city at this time tends to see fewer crowds and overall has a more pleasant feel than during humid and busy summer times.
Depending on the year, you may find Venice already a little chilly or still warm and sunny: last year at the end of October we were in short sleeves during the day and wrapped up in a puffy jacket at night!
Wonderful things to do in Venice in October include:
- See all Venice must-see sites, making the most of the slightly smaller crowds.
- Take a class with Row Venice to experience an ancient skill and get up close and personal with Venice canals
- A visit to the beautiful glass workshops in Murano, where you can learn how glass is made and buy gorgeous glass jewelry or home decor for yourself or a loved one (they make fantastic traditionally Italian souvenirs !)
- A visit to Burano and its delightful colorful houses: don’t forget to check out the local lace museum and taste Burano’s local biscuits buranelli – they are perfect with coffee or tea!
- Gorge on Venice chicchetti : chiccetti is the name Venice people give to small bites of food served in local establishments ( bacari ).
They come in several forms, with meat/fish/seafood/vegetables and they are a wonderful excuse to sit indoors and have a rest when the sun starts to go down or rain threatens to ruin your plans.

Tuscany in October
Tuscany and its rolling hills go through a magical time in the fall.
The mild weather is perfect for sightseeing and the bright sky of this season, with the occasional cloud coverage, always strikes me as the perfect backdrop for Tuscany’s Medieval and Renaissance gems.
This is the time to enjoy the stunning foliage of the Tuscan forests and to taste the warming food of this amazing terroir.
October in Tuscany evokes long walks in hilltop towns followed by dinners in local restaurants indulging in local wine and a platter of cheese.
The best places to visit in Tuscany in October are:
- San Gimignano
- Montepulciano
- San Quirico d’Orcia
Find here >>> our complete guide to Tuscany in the fall
Emilia Romagna in October
The land of Parma ham and Parmigiano is wonderful to visit at this time of the year, after the oppressive summer is gone and before the cold and foggy months begin.
The best places to visit in Emilia Romagna in October are:
The cities of Emilia Romagna offer endless opportunities for sightseeing and the area is a foodie paradise: this is the part of Italy that gave to the world tortellini, ragu’ alla bolognese , prosciutto di Parma and Parmesan, just to name its most famous creations!
If you are into food, this will be your personal corner of paradise.
Umbria in October
Umbria is a wonderful part of Italy to visit in October.
The region has beautiful medieval towns and stunning forests which, in October, blesses locals and visitors with an amazing harvest of olives, truffles, hazelnuts and more!
A visit to Umbria in October is ideal if you like sightseeing and can offer great opportunities for fun activities such as olive harvest and truffle hunting.
In October, Umbria celebrates its most famous saint, St Francis and especially the city of Assisi hosts large festivals in his honor at the time of his death, the 4th of October.
Places not to miss in Umbria in October are:
- Citta’ di Castello
Puglia in October
Puglia, the heel of Italy, is often blessed with amazing weather in October.
On a good year, you will be able to enjoy long days out and still wear summer clothing here, without the scorching heat of the summer.
The photos you see on this page from Puglia are taken at the end of October!
Wonderful places to visit in Puglia at this time are
- Monopoli – and its adorable, picture-perfect port
- Trani – with its wonderful seaside cathedral
- Martina Franca – stunning whitewashed town with impressive baroque architecture
- Alberobello – the town with UNESCO famous trulli
- Locorotondo – a tiny gem of a place with whitewashed houses and pretty balconies
- Castel del Monte – UNESCO castle with a unique structure and history
Matera in October
Matera is unique in Italy but has fickle weather.
Hot in summer and cold in winter, it is perfect in October, when you can sightsee in mild temperatures and make the most of its crisp bright sky.
Matera has a unique history and it is visually stunning. I highly recommend you spend at least two full days here: the evenings in Matera especially, as the sun starts to go down on its cave dwellings and the city’s wine bars come to life is a delight.
You can find here >>> my travel guide to Matera
Sicily in October
October is one of the best months to visit Sicily. Outside of the busy summer time, in October you will be able to visit Sicily’s stunning archaeological sites without melting in its torrid sun and you will still be able to enjoy beautiful sea views.
This is a good time for cultural tourism in Sicily rather than and sea and sun vacation since high temperatures, especially towards the end of the month, are not always guaranteed.
Places we love in Sicily are:
- Scopello and Segesta
- Noto Valley
if you can rent a car, October is a fantastic time for a mini road trip in Sicily , away from the scorching temperatures of summer!
Other places you may want to visit in Italy in October
Dolomites – October is not a great time to visit the Dolomites.
At this time, the season is too advanced for most hiking, especially at high altitudes and not quite advanced enough for skiing.
However, you can still get lovely sights of the beautiful landscape changing its colors from green to golden, making an autumn trip here worth it.
At this time, I love to base myself in Bolzano and explore locally.
You can find here >>> my guide to my favorite places on the Dolomites .
Amalfi Coast – the Amalfi Coast is wonderful any time of the year and October is a lovely time to visit.
At this time, the temperatures are usually much milder than in summer and, by the end of the month, tourism services tend to wind down; however, you will still be well able to enjoy all this wonderful area has to offer: food, coastal views and history being only the beginning!
Especially if going towards the end of the month, double-check the schedule for ferries if you are counting on going to the islands and be prepared for the occasional rainy day.
Cinque Terre – Cinque Terre is a wonderful part of Italy however, it is not always at its best in October, especially towards the end of the month.
The weather is usually too cold for swimming and rains are frequent.
If coming at this time, check the conditions of the paths carefully before venturing up.
The villages and their wonderful food will be, however, well able to keep you busy in October too!
October is a lovely time for a family trip to Italy, a time when you can experience Italy’s local life, for instance going to the playground after Italian schools finish for the day, as well as enjoying traditional sightseeing activities.
However, October in Italy is not a time for beaches, pools or boat trips and even hiking sometimes can be tricky die to the weather. Therefore, I feel having the right expectations is key!
Keeping temperatures, in mind, I feel the best things to do with kids in Italy in October are:
Rome with kids – magical in October, when the city usually gets crisp sky and mild temperatures. The Colosseum the city’s parks are perfect for sunny days and the many family-friendly museums in the city offer refuge for the wet days.
Florence with kids – always lovely with children but way too hot in summer, Florence offers a good mix of indoor attractions and easy access the the Tuscany countryside, which you can enjoy in this season with truffle hunts and vineyard tours. You can read here >>> my guide to Tuscany with kids.
Florence can also easily be combined with a trip to Bologna and the car valley, where kids may enjoy the exciting Ferrari Museum !
Venice with kids – blissfully devoid of mosquitoes, hungry and annoying in summer
Verona with kids – Verona is one of my favorite cities to visit in Italy with kids, well able to keep them busy even on a rainy day!
Puglia, Matera and Paestum – one of the most successful October trips we have taken in Italy has led us to Puglia, Matera and Paestum : the wonderful photo below with my daughter and a temple is from there!
Just for fun! In the last couple of years Italy has embraced the tradition of days at the pumpkin patch! These can be great fun for kids – find here >>> a list of kid-friendly pumpkin patches in Italy .
What to book in advance for spending October in Italy
October is surprisingly busy in Italy and advance booking for all main attractions is recommended.
Attractions that need advance booking are:
Last Supper (Milan) – The Last Supper tends to book out quickly. I highly recommend you secure a ticket as soon as you have your dates set. The one at the provided link has a good cancellation policy, for peace of mind.
Uffizi Gallery (Florence) – always very busy, it is worth securing a guided tour in advance
Vatican Museums (Vatican City, Rome) – The Vatican Museums are vast and wonderful and this can result into the experience of your visit being overwhelming. Unless you know already what parts of the museums interest you, I highly recommend you get a guide and join a tour (either small group tour or private).
Good tickets/ Vatican Tour options (they all include the Sistine Chapel) are:
- Vatican and Sistine Chapel entry ticket
- Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tour
- Early morning Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tour (perfect if you want to beat the crowds or need the rest of your day free)
Colosseum (Rome)
The Colosseum and the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are stunning in October but advance booking is a must.
You can choose between several types of tickets:
- Standard entry ticket, with a guided tour of the Colosseum and self-guided tour of the Forum by Coopculture: this is the official OClosseum concession and has good value tickets but offers no flexibility on your booking time/date
- Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill ticket by GetYourGuide – a good value ticket option with a good cancellation policy
- Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour for families with kids – a good option for families traveling with school-age kids
Trains do not usually need to be booked in advance however, high-speed trains on popular routes such as Rome to Florence do tend to book out or only have very expensive tickets available.
I recommend you use the website trenitalia.it or italo.it: these are the ones that allow buying tickets directly, without additional agency fees.
Learn here >>> all about train travel in Italy
The last week of October is usually one of the busiest due to the proximity of the National Holiday on 1st of November, All Saints, a traditional long weekend for Italians. Book in advance if planning on traveling at that time.
I hope you enjoyed this quick guide to Italy in October. Safe travel planning!
This post was published in 2020 and has now been updated with recent photos and weather patterns. The experiences and opinions are based on my own personal experience and travels around Italy.

Traveling to Italy in October: What You Need to Know
Blanket Vineyard – by Roberto Faccenda (creative commons)
When people ask me my favorite time to travel in Italy, I invariably say one of the shoulder seasons – spring or fall. But the truth is that the fall has my heart, largely because it’s when there are food and wine festivals all over the country. October is definitely in Italy’s fall shoulder season, which often means lower prices on things like accommodation and airfare, but those harvest festivals still draw crowds from both inside and outside the country – so don’t expect to have Italy all to yourself. Keep reading to find out what to expect from October in Italy, including the weather and what’s on the calendar.
Weather in Italy in October
While September temperatures can still be summery and hot, October usually heralds the true start of fall. Temperatures in October go down all over the peninsula, and there’s a higher probaility of rainfall. This is one of those months when you’ll probably need both sunglasses and an umbrella on hand, just in case.
You aren’t likely to find Italians or Europeans on the beaches in October – they think that’s way too cold, and besides they’ve had their beach holidays in August – but if you’re coming from a cooler climate you might be thrilled to find warm days and nearly-empty beaches.
Some average temperature ranges for different parts of Italy are:
- Northern Italy: 45-65°F (7-18°C)
- Central Italy: 55-70°F (13-21°C)
- Southern Italy: 65-75°F (18-24°C)
And, as always, check the current extended forecast for where you’re actually going just before you leave – when you’re packing is a good time, actually – so you can find out in advance if there’s an unseasonably cold or hot spell predicted.
Holidays & Festivals in Italy in October
Like I said at the outset, fall is when food and festival enthusiasts will want to be in Italy. October harvest festivals include the White Truffle Festival in Alba and Perugia’s famous EuroChocolate, both of which draw huge crowds of foodies from around the world. There aren’t any big national holidays in October to think about (those can sometimes mess with transportation schedules), but it never hurts to see if there’s a calendar of events for the towns you’re visiting, just in case you’ll be around for a celebration of a local patron saint or a little-known harvest festival. Browse my (nowhere near comprehensive) list of holidays and festivals in Italy to get a start on your hunt.
Why should you go to Italy in October?
So, umm, have I mentioned the food festivals? And that includes wine, too? You get the idea, I think – foodies love October in Italy. Not a foodie? No problem – October has plenty of perks for you, too.
As mentioned, October is truly in Italy’s fall shoulder season. If you’re on a tight budget, that can help you save quite a bit on airfare, accommodation, and even sometimes activities like walking tours. Attractions don’t typically have off-season prices, though. Aside from the people who flock to food and wine festivals, there is usually a noticeable drop-off in the number of people who flood Italian shores during the summer. No, Rome isn’t empty – ever – but the lines to see things like the Colosseum get shorter.
Those of you who are primarily focused on sun and beaches won’t find October suitable, since it’s just as likely to be cool in the evenings and rain a bit as it is to be lovely and sunny. People who seek out gardens will be disappointed that things aren’t in bloom all over the place. And October still has so many things going for it that it remains one of my favorite times to be in Italy.

So mid-late October the weather in Rome is still nice – 70’s F ????
All the temperatures I’ve listed are averages, meant to give you an idea of what the weather is like in Italy in any given season, but those can vary drastically in real life. I always encourage people to check the current forecast as they’re packing at home so they’re not totally caught off-guard.
And starting in October you will find many of the boat lines on the lakes closed
Do you have any insight for the Slow Food events happening on even years in Turin? I’m planning to go and was hoping for tips from you or anyone.
I don’t see anything on the website other than a “see you in 2018,” but I’d imagine that’s the best place to keep checking.
We are planning a trip in October. Given that it’s now mid April, how far in advance do you usually book your airfare for the best rates? I’m seeing rates of $1,100-1,200ish out of Cincinnati currently for mid October and we’re trying to decide if we should go ahead and jump on those or not. Thanks for the great article!
I usually set email alerts for the routes I’m considering (if there are multiple airports you can fly out of and into) so that I get notified any time the price changes – in either direction. Then I can monitor the price and have a better idea of when it’s a good time to buy. And then, after I buy my tickets, I cancel those alerts and stop checking prices to keep from driving myself crazy. 🙂 I’d say you’re in a good position to start monitoring prices, but personally I don’t book flights six months in advance.
Thanks so much!!!

A Taste of Italy: 11 Days
The first half of the trip is very well planned as we had a tour director and bus. Stephano and Luigi were absolutely fantastic. They went above and beyond to make sure we all were taken care of. Once we returned back to Rome in the middle of the trip, we got passed around to different drivers, tour leaders, etc. It was a bit disheartening. However, things were well organized and we were able to do everything we were supposed to. Overall, it was nice to have tours of the cities and then free time. The free time in each city was very nice. Hotels were nice. Keep in mind, we are in Europe. Do not expect large rooms with massive bathrooms. All hotels were clean.

The Essential of Italy end Milan
Hello, I choose the tour Essential of Italy end Milan: I really enjoyed this tour. It was well organized and run: it went all smooth following the trip plan. Consider that you will enjoy busy days, with two/three stops and visits for each day and you have to walk a lot: please, wear comfortable shoes. Moreover, this is not a relaxing vacation: usually, you get up at 7.00-8.00 and check-in late in the evening (between 19.00 and 21.00) due to some delays. Sometimes it's not that convenint not to have a dinner option for the evening. I wish you nice trips all around the world! Stefania
The Essential of Italy
This trip was way better than I was even expecting! Raquel, the tour guide, was absolutely amazing!!! I have no complaints
UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days
We had a great five days with our tour director Stefano, and our excellent driver Luigi. Stefano was outstanding at his job, he was very informative and always patient, and kept everything running smoothly. We appreciated how he took care of all the details, even writing out the city bus instructions on our itinerary in the lobby of the hotel in Mestre! This tour is an excellent way to see a lot in a short period of time. We visited many more towns than I would’ve ever seen if I’d planned it myself! The hotels were both clean and convenient, and we were lucky to have a small group on the bus, so we had lots of room to stretch out.
Italian Discovery
We did the Italian Discovery Tour and generally felt the company did a great job.We did feel that there were way too many people. We were told there would be 35 and we ended up with a hundred This created alot of logistical problems and we wound up waiting for people frequently . We also asked before we left which optional trips were available and were told the Coliseum was one and we could sign up when we got to Rome but we're unable to do it . It was not offered The other optional trips were great. Our tour guides in general were great. Especially Nicole. The hotels also were wonderful. Our only complaint is that we did a Rome at night tour on our first night. The tour was great but we were left on Rome on our first night and were expected to find our own way back to the hotel Overall we would recommend the tour. The food at our hotels.except in Sorrento was terrible Breakfasts were good at some hotels but dinners were awful. We enjoyed the tour .
Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights)
Generally speaking the tour was good. Hotels, foods, itinerary, tour guide were all satisfied. the only thing made me unhappy even panic was no taxi driver waiting at Catania airport arrivals although I booked in advance. It's about 22:30, I phoned the emergency number, the lady replied in Italian, we could not understand each other, so she shouted and put down phone. Then I asked an Italian for help. He made a call and got one can speak English. I was told the driver was in a airport bar, then I found the bar was closed and the driver was at outside of the bar, eventually he took me to the hotel, that was very late. The people responds emergency number cannot speak English?! The taxi driver 'with a sign with your surname on it' was not waiting at the arrivals as I was told. What was a shock for a person arrived in Catania first time at late evening and start a tour next morning?!

- Food & Culinary
Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)
From the time we lasted until we were dropped off, the whole tour was beyond excellent. The food and wine tours were varied from small plates at different restaurants to large meals at scenic settings. We ate at a seaport and at a farm house (the setting was far from rustic), in markets, and wineries. We had a cooking class where we prepared a traditional Sicilian meal. We stayed in wonderful hotels and had terrific tour guides. The tours were fabulous but they were short enough to allow for sometime to explore on our own. I would highly recommend this well managed and well planned tour.

New Tour of Sicily from Palermo 10 Days
The tour started for us in Palermo and does a circuit. Some people start it in Catania so you meet a new group halfway through. Our first guide Luccio was very nice he finished in Catania. We had WhatsApp contact with him 24/7. Angelo was our second guide and he was fabulous!! Very experienced; kind; attentive; knowledgeable; and very tolerant and accommodating with all the different types of people you can meet on a tour. Hotels were budget, but clean and safe. Well located in Palerma and Catania. Not all had comfortable beds. All had good breakfasts. The tour included 2 dinners and lunches in Taormina, Agrigento, Cefalu, Modica and Monreale. All 3 courses! Lots of standing around in the archaeological sites while local guide gave talks. It was 27°Check-in and quite warm in the sun. 32 people lining up for the toilets took a while, so quick toilet stops were anything but. The bus was comfortable and had USB ports for charging devices and was nicely air-conditioned. Generally, a well paced tour. For price/quality ratio it was an excellent budget tour. Would totally recommend to friends and family
Sail Italy: Procida to Amalfi
The tour was wonderful! The boat was comfortable and spacious. The tour was well organized for timing and itinerary. We also had an unexpected surprise: we saw dolphins! Paolo was the perfect guide: he was always available, funny and responsible. He showed us the best of the Amalfi Coast! I would suggest this tour for everyone who needs to rest.
Explore Southern Sicily
We loved our Sicily tour!!! We had a wonderful guide, Luca who was helpful even beyond our time with him as we left Sicily and moved on to mainland Italy. The accommodations were good and the food delish! We will be using them again!
- Hiking & Trekking
Hiking in the Dolomites
Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.
UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 8 days
The tour was good! I rated it four stars because the tour didn’t exceed expectations but it did meet them. The food we were provided was not very good and the hotels weren’t the best, however, everything was as described. The tour kept us quite busy! I had fun.
What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Italy
Good value for the money, however there are few areas that could use improvement. Optional excursions were published too late, by the published dates we have already added extra nights and accommodation's so could not take advantage of them. With hotels about 30 mins outside of tourist area, some kind of shuttle should have been provided- not everyone can 'survive' sunrise to sunset on the go and taxi in IT are expensive and unreliable. The common areas of hotels were nice, however the rooms (mainly shower and carpets) could really really use a good scrub down. Having said that, Gabbi, our chaperon during the trip was great, super informative and helpful-- having a link for tips after the trip would help as at the end of the trip exhaustion kicks in and remembering tipping it is hard.
My room at the first hotel in Rome (Ergife) was cold. Otherwise everything went as well as I could have expected. Someone I met during the trip felt that arriving at many of the cities occurred so late that it was dark and there wasn't any opportunity to see the sites. Considering the logistics of travel by bus, I'm not sure how that could have been avoided. Perhaps an option of travelling via Frecciarossa would be useful. One simple improvement would be adding information about the Hop-On buses in each city (especially Rome). I figured that out, but it could have been included on the flier and maybe I did not pick the best bus.

Culture and customs.
The Renaissance, opera, Vespa, Valentino, slow food, espresso, the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel, the culture of Italy is as rich as its food. And with iconic cities like Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples showcasing historic gems around every corner, it's easy to see why Italians are so very proud of their heritage. Italy drips with sensational artwork, ancient icons, ornate architecture and historic sights. The streets are filled with people and places that exude character and charisma, and the famous Italian artists, inventors and public figures that have contributed so much to the world are openly adored and celebrated.
In general, Italians value family, food and the enjoyment of life. Good quality food made with the best ingredients is preferred over processed products and fast food. Eating is a pleasure to be enjoyed with friends and family, not a necessary inconvenience. Respect for the family unit is paramount, with many families choosing to live close to each other for life. Community is also an important element of Italian life and this can be seen in neighbours enjoying a passeggiata (an after-dinner stroll and chat).
Italians certainly live their lives with passion, and this is evident in their zealous approach to driving, passionate following of football (soccer) matches and exuberant social life. It's common to see Italians debate politics, fashion, sport and current affairs with ferocious verve, which can sometimes be quite confronting for people from meeker cultural backgrounds. But lying underneath the bold, animated exterior of most Italians is a deep, passionate love of life itself.
History and government
Rise of the empire.
The rise of the Roman Empire has been the subject of much fascination, intrigue and interest from scholars, artists, travellers and students around the world. The modern world owes a lot to this civilisation, with many important scientific inventions, art movements, architectural triumphs and philosophical ideas being born from Roman civilisation – most notably during the Renaissance.
Founded sometime around 750 BC, Rome is still considered one of the most important and enduring cities in the world. Home to such famous citizens as Julius Caesar, Emperor Augustus, Claudius, Nero, Mark Antony and Marcus Aurelius, Rome has enjoyed the great highs of dominating the Mediterranean region and the artistic triumphs of the Renaissance, but also the lows of the Great Fire of Rome, which ended up destroying a large part of the city. Rome has survived natural disasters, political turmoil, feuding families, plagues and fierce wars.
Spanning centuries, the story of Ancient Rome is full of dramatic twists and turns, and explains how tourist icons like the Colosseum, Pantheon, Circus Maximus and Palantine Hill came to be.
The Renaissance
The time of the Renaissance in Italy (15th to 16th century) marked the clear transition from the Middle Ages to Modernity. The social and cultural revolution began in Florence, which was under the rule of the Medici family, and spread south to Rome. During this time, there was a reinvigoration of the arts, literature, science, invention and political theory, which influenced all of Europe – all centred in Italy.
People in protest
After the Renaissance, Italy was unified with Sardinia in 1861, becoming the Kingdom of Italy. After World War I, Italy came under the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini, who ruled until 1943. Siding with Nazi Germany in World War II, the Italian Army suffered many losses and ultimately surrendered in 1945. After a referendum in 1946, Italy became a Republic and flourished during the 1950s and 1960s. The post-war period marks a time of economic progress for Italy, also largely reflected by the rest of the world's increased economic stability during a period of relative peace.
From the late 1960s, Italians lived with political upheaval and uncertainty, marked by the ‘Anni di Piombo’ or ‘Years of Lead’. This time was marked by conflict and public protests, and in the years to follow, corruption, organised crime, terrorism and government debt was prominent in Italy. This led to extremist incidents of political terrorism and crisis on the left and the right, with one terrorist group – le Brigaterosse (or the Red Brigade) – a key player in the turmoil.
In 1994, media mogul Silvio Berlusconi was elected to the office of Prime Minister but was forced to step down later in the year after losing support from his political partners. Social unrest died down a little after the turn of the millennium, but Italy’s political system remained fraught with instability. Undeterred, Berlusconi regained power on two separate occasions, both times amid controversy and scandal.
Currently, Italy is run under a unitary parliamentary republic system, and has been since 1946. The final downfall of Berlusconi has marked a shift in Italian politics, with many parties vying for office, and alliances and coalitions the only way to do so.

Eating and drinking
Italy may be the food capital of the world (not exaggerating), but sometimes it can be difficult to know what to eat and where to go.
When eating and drinking through Italy, be sure to walk a street or two away from the tourist attractions to find a restaurant, as they often are cheaper and much more authentic than the ones close by. Be sceptical of menus entirely in English and those with pictures, as this is, again, not the authentic way. Also, bigger is not always better – often the ‘hole-in-the-wall’ restaurants produce the best food. But above all, go with your gut and follow your eyes and nose, and you will be satisfied.

Must try dishes and drinks in Italy
- Antipasto If any country knows its way around cured meat and vegetables, it’s Italy. Discover salami, olives, artichokes, anchovies, cheeses, grissini and more, with each board changing depending on what region you find yourself in.
- Pizza If you were asked to describe Italy in one word, chances are someone would yell ‘pizza’. This carby dish of 100% joy is found all over, with regional specialities everywhere you go. And if you’re vegan? No stress – just ask for one of the vegetarian pizzas ‘senza formaggio’ (without cheese) and you’ll be set. Expect to be crucified if you ask for pineapple, though.
- Pasta Different shapes, different sauces and different preparations make this one of the world’s most versatile dishes. From a fiery penne arrabbiata and a creamy spaghetti cacio e pepe to a baked gnocchi alla romana, you really can’t go wrong.
- Gelato Traditional Italian flavours like bacio (chocolate hazelnut), amarena (sour cherry) and limone (lemon) are the perfect accompaniment to sightseeing on a hot summer's day. Stack the gusti (flavours) up on a cono (cone) or in a copetta (cup) for a quick snack.
- Wine Italy produces some of the world's best wine, so savour a glass (or three) of Chianti or Sangiovese with dinner. Most regions of Italy produce their own wine, but the area that everyone talks about is the one and only Tuscany.
- Aperitivo A classic Italian pastime, aperitivo hour calls for two things: to find a local restaurant or bar in the early evening, and to order yourself a drink. This is usually a light and dry tonic, but can be wine or a cocktail. It’s usually accompanied by some complimentary nibbles.

Geography and environment
Sharing borders with Switzerland , France , Slovenia and Austria , Italy also encompasses the independent territories of San Marino and Vatican City and includes the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
Home to mountains, volcanoes, islands, beaches, spectacular cliffs and expansive stretches of coastline, the natural landscapes of Italy provide dramatic scenery as well as popular places to explore and relax for travellers. The major cities of Italy, although industrialised, still retain buildings, churches and relics from the past. It's quite common to see modern shops housed in historic cobblestone streets and new Vespas perched beside piazzas.
In smaller cities and more isolated areas, rural life is a whole lot slower. Permaculture remains popular, with many Italians growing fruit and vegetables in their backyards. The traffic and frenetic pace of the cities give way to idyllic olive groves, vineyards and farmhouses.
8 iconic Italian landscapes
- Capri Be blown away by the shimmering beauty of this sun-bleached island that sits in the middle of a mass of deep blue water. Home to luminous sea caves, stunning cliff faces and whitewashed buildings, Capri is the perfect setting for a romantic escapade, relaxing boat ride or some serious sun-worshipping.
- Tuscany An enchanting mix of rolling green hills, vineyards, simple farmhouses and charming villages, Tuscan landscapes are effortlessly beautiful. Whether you're cycling around vineyards, hiking through the countryside or lying in a field of golden grass, Tuscany is made for life in the slow lane.
- Lake Como Lake Como is considered one of the most picturesque slices of Italy. A vast expanse of deep blue water set to a stunning mountainous backdrop dotted with rustic villas and wildflowers, Como is the sparkling jewel of Italy's north, naturally polished to perfection.
- Mount Vesuvius Sitting on the Bay of Naples, the austere beauty of brooding Mt Vesuvius offers a contrast to the luscious green landscapes of the Mediterranean. Mt Vesuvius is still active, but a hike to the summit is possible – and worth it for the views of the bay below.
- Amalfi Coast A journey along the winding roads of the Amalfi Coast offers panoramic sea views, alluring towns perched on cliffs and beaches bathed in sunlight. Admire landscapes dotted with lemon trees and olive groves and enjoy the gentle sea breezes.
- Sicily Sitting under the watchful eye of moody Mt Etna, Sicily is a taste of authentic Italy. Surrounded by a sea of turquoise speckled with volcanic islands, Sicily boasts diverse landscapes of rocky mountains, rural pastures, ancient ruins and villages steeped in history.
- The Dolomites Carpeted in wildflowers during summer and covered in a blanket of white snow during winter, the Dolomites are a breathtaking sight in any season. Whether you're hiking the trails during summer or skiing downhill during winter, you’ll soon realise why the Dolomites have such a mighty reputation.
- Le Cinque Terre A quintessential Italian sight, the Cinque Terre, or Five Lands, is a destination to be cherished. Walk the rocky path over steep cliffs and past character-filled villages perched beside the sea. Wander past shady trees, gardens and groves as the sea reflects the sun’s rays. This is panoramic perfection!
Italians are known for their style and this is reflected in their designer fashion and furniture. Be prepared to part with money – shopping in Italy can get quite expensive – but the quality of handmade and tailored items is generally exceptional.
Things to buy
- Clothing Milan, Rome and other big cities are packed with high-end designer fashion boutiques, chic outlets and tailors. Wherever you are in Italy you're guaranteed to get the latest fashions straight from the catwalks of Europe.
- Colourful ceramics Vibrant, hand-painted ceramic bowls, jugs and glasses can be found in the shops and markets of the Amalfi Coast and Sicily – a perfect reminder of the Mediterranean. If you do happen to head to the island of Murano in Venice, be sure to check out their renowned glassware.
- Masks Venice is filled with shops selling elaborate, handcrafted masquerade masks. These colourful creations look great hung on walls and are a true Venetian keepsake.
- Leather footwear, bags and accessories Florence and Rome are hotspots for sourcing gorgeous handmade leather items. Splash out on an 'investment purchase' – a leather handbag that will last a lifetime. You deserve it.
- Italian foodstuffs Now, this one you’ve got to be careful with, but if you know your limits, you’ll be eating and drinking authentically when you arrive home. Infused olive oils, syrupy balsamic vinegar, local dried pasta, limoncello and more – all (likely) fine to pack carefully in your luggage and take home. Be careful with anything fresh or unsealed, though, or you might be in for a hefty fine if you try to get them back home.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.
Top Italian events and festivals
Keep the ‘festa’ (or party) going in Italy with festivals and events all around the country. If there’s something going on in Italy, you know that food and drink is somehow involved, too.
1. Regata Storica di Venezia (Venice Historical Regatta)
For four days, Venice’s romantic gondolas take second place on the scenic canals to races featuring the world’s best rowers. Dating back to the 13th century, this historic event is held on the first Sunday of September each year.
2. Natale di Roma (Rome’s Birthday Celebrations)
Every April, Rome throws itself an epic birthday bash and parties like it’s 753 BC. Gladiator battles, historic re-enactments, equestrian events, parades and concerts are all part of this three-day throwback to ancient Roman times.
3. Pasqua (Easter)
Beautifully decorated shop windows, colourful painted eggs, church services, parades, feasts and fireworks make Easter a wonderful time to visit and be immersed in traditional Italian cultures. A huge Easter celebration mass is held at St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, followed by an address from the Pope at noon. There are many festive recipes rolled out for Easter too, including the colomba – a dove-shaped cake flavoured with almond.
5. Carnevale
Each city may celebrate differently, but Carnevale festivities in the lead-up to Lent are always a raucous affair in Italy. Venice celebrates with masked parties. Viareggio opts for parades featuring floats, costumes and enormous papier-mache puppets, and Turin hosts the Battle of the Oranges – a spectacular food fight with, you guessed it, oranges.
6. Verona Opera Festival
The country that gave the world opera hosts the oldest opera festival in Verona each summer in the historic Verona Arena, a massive first-century Roman amphitheatre.

Italy travel FAQs
Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Do you need a visa for Italy?
Generally, you will not need a visa to travel to Italy for a period of up to 90 days. Some citizens of a select few nationalities may need to obtain a Schengen visa before travelling to Italy. For more information, contact the Italian embassy or consulate in your home country.
This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is tipping customary in Italy?
Tipping isn’t customary in Italy, but it is appreciated. Feel free to leave a small amount if the service has been particularly good. Some restaurants will add a cover charge or ‘servizio’ to your bill.
What is the internet access like in Italy?
Italy, like the rest of Europe , is well connected. Wi-fi is almost always available at larger hotels and guesthouses, either included in your room price, or for a small additional fee. Some smaller accommodations, such as rural guesthouses and homestays, may not have wi-fi available, or the signal may be patchy.
Many fast food chains, bars and restaurants also offer wi-fi connectivity, often with an access code located on a purchase receipt. Look out for the international wi-fi symbol, or politely ask a waiter if the option is available. Some major Italian cities also offer public wi-fi hotspots with registration.
If you do not have your own device, there are still some internet cafes in Italy’s major cities.
Can I use my mobile while in Italy?
Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Italy. Your best (and often cheapest) option is to purchase a local SIM card when arriving in Italy if your phone is compatible and unlocked.
There is also the option to activate global roaming with your service provider before leaving home. Check the roaming charges before you leave home, as this option can often be highly expensive.
What are the toilets like in Italy?
Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Italy.
Public toilets are not in abundance in Italy, so your best bet is to use the facilities in museums, galleries, department stores, train stations and restaurants. You may have to pay a small fee to use public toilets – ranging from around EUR 0.50 to EUR 2.
What will it cost for a…?
Italy’s unit of currency is the euro (EUR). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:
- Cup of coffee = EUR € 1.50
- Small gelato cone = EUR € 2-3
- A glass of beer = EUR € 4-5
- Bottle of wine in a restaurant = EUR € 10
- Mid-range meal at a restaurant = EUR € 30-40
Can I drink the water in Italy?
Drinking water from taps in Italy is generally considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.
Are credit cards accepted widely in Italy?
Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in Italy. Smaller cafes, shops and markets may not accept credit cards, and smaller museums or galleries may charge an entry fee in cash only, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.
What is ATM access like in Italy?
ATMs are common in Italy, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities. Beware of transaction fees that ATMs charge and the conversion rates they may offer, as they are often much worse than what your card offers.

Is Italy safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Italy is mostly a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers. Same-sex relationships are legal and are largely accepted, with civil unions entrenched in law since 2016. Same-sex marriage is currently not legal. There are some anti-discrimination laws to protect sexual orientation and gender identity.
In more rural and regional areas, overt displays of affection can attract negative responses in smaller towns, which tend to be more conservative. Rome, Milan and Bologna have the largest gay scenes, and Florence and Naples have a handful of LGBTQIA+-friendly venues too.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
When is the best time to visit Italy?
Italy enjoys a temperate climate most of the year, with June, July and August the warmest months. Popular tourist spots get very busy and crowded during the European summer, but don’t let that deter you – the sun will be shining, and the gelato will be served icy cold.
The shoulder seasons of April–May and September–October offer great conditions for travel, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds at main sights and beaches. Even though it’s not as hot, you’re still set for some warmer conditions and more pleasant temperatures to walk around the cities like Rome and Florence.
It can get quite cold in the winter months, especially in the north, with cities like Milan, Turin and Venice often seeing snow, fog and rain in December and January. Major coastal tourist spots like the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre can be very quiet during winter with many establishments closing at this time, so it might be best to visit in the warmer months if these places interest you.
What is the weather like in Italy?
As you can tell from a world map, Italy is a pretty long country compared to its European neighbours. This gives it one of the more diverse climates in Europe , with mountainous zones in the north and dry arid landscapes in the south graced with all different types of weather.
Much of the inland northern regions have harsh winters and hot summers, while coastal areas of Liguria, Tuscany and the south of Italy generally fit that Mediterranean stereotype, with hot and dry summers and mild winters. The east coast of the Italian peninsula is not as wet as the west coast, but in winter, the east coast is usually colder.
Generally, Italy’s hottest month in the south is August and can reach upwards of 40°C, while the north hits its peak in July and has slightly milder maximums. January is the coldest month throughout the country.
What to pack for Italy?
You’ll need to consider the time of year you want to travel, plus the places you’re travelling to so you can work out what you should wear in Italy.
In summer, loose-fitting cotton clothing like light t-shirts and shorts or light trousers, is recommended no matter what part of the country you’re in. During the transitioning seasons of April-May and September-October, packing a jacket and long pants is encouraged so you can layer, if needed.
Winter brings snow and sub-zero temperatures to the north of the country, so if you’re travelling in Milan or the Piedmont region, pack warm clothing, such as thermals and thick jackets. A scarf and gloves are encouraged too. For the south, you may not need all the heavy stuff, but having warm, windproof and waterproof gear is advisable.
If you wish to visit the Sistine Chapel and other churches and religious sites in the Vatican City and beyond, it is highly recommended that men and women wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, any time of year. If you are found to be wearing immodest clothing by security guards or staff, you will be denied entry.

Is Italy accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, whatever physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help choose the most suitable itinerary and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Despite Italy’s charm and old-town feel, travellers with mobility and sight or hearing impairments may find it difficult to travel around the country independently. Old cobbled streets and pavements blocked by parked cars are the norm, making it difficult for wheelchair users.
Despite this, much of Italy’s public transport system is mobility friendly. The service ‘Sala Blu’ (Blue Hall) is provided to travellers who require assistance at the 14 main train stations around Italy. These services include providing a wheelchair, a representative to accompany you to your train, another to meet at the other end, lift service to get on and off the train, and free use of baggage trolleys.
Many of Italy’s most-visited attractions, like the Colosseum, Vatican museums and the Uffizi Gallery, are almost entirely wheelchair accessible, with ramps and lifts available. Venice may be considered the least accessible, but it is possible. Bridges between canals should be avoided, but vaporettos (or water taxis) can be used, especially the routes along the Grand Canal.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?
Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

How will I be travelling around Italy?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport – which usually have less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.
Depending on which trip you're on while in Italy, you may find yourself travelling by bicycle.
Whether it’s riding through fields of grass scattered with wildflowers or past quaint buildings down cobblestone lanes, taking a quick spin around town or tackling the towering Dolomites, two wheels open up so many options.
What better way to see Italy’s island of Sardinia or the Amalfi coast than on a small-group sailing adventure? Cruise past idyllic islands to fabulous shore stops dotted around the Mediterranean.
What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?
Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.
When travelling with us in Italy you may find yourself staying in a:
Agriturismo (farmstay)
Your time in Italy is further enhanced with an agriturismo, or farmstay, experience. Immerse yourself in a picturesque setting overlooking the countryside, with food and relaxation the main focus.
Does my trip to Italy support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Italy directly support our foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio.
Cooperativa Coraggio
Cooperativa Coraggio set up agricultural projects on unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in communities in Italy. Donations help their regeneration project on 22 hectares of land at Borghetto San Carlo Estate, located on the outskirts of Rome.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
What is it like travelling on a small group tour?
Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Tour of Italy October 2022
I love this forum and how helpful other travelers are when planning trips. We did a 12 day tour of Italy during the first two weeks of October 2022. Flying into Venice (3 days), onto Florence (3 days) with a day trip to Pisa and Cinque Terre (took the express train to all 5 villages with no daylight to spare), then to Amalfi for 2 very warm days on the coast, finally we hit Pompeii before our last 3 days in Rome. The trains give excellent mobility throughout this beautiful country and this was my first trip to Italy where I booked every single thing before we left the US. The weather was perfect, and every step of the journey worked out perfectly. We saw all the tourist spots in each city along with extras along the way. The only time we saw rain was during our 3 hour train ride from Florence to Naples/Amalfi. The only question I have now is, where do we go for October 2023? :)
Spain. You can prebook all your trains or buses and there are so many wonderful cities to choose from. We had a great time both planning and taking our trip. We were just there last October and the weather was nice, cool not too hot, except for Barcelona which was hot. We only had rain one morning in Madrid for about 10 minutes and Toledo one evening for about half hour. Not a hard rain.
Put me anywhere in the Mediterranean and I'm good. Once I got to Italy, I just kept going back, but you might also love Croatia, Greece, Spain. Do you want to try driving on your next trip, or are you looking to stick to train? The mainland of Greece is packed with blockbuster sights, but it's vastly easier with a car. Parts of Spain are perfect with train/bus, especially Andalucia. Croatia is a hybrid, the coast is easy with bus and ferry, but October would be perfect for inland Istria, where you would need to drive. It's easy rural driving. October is the waning end of the season for the Swiss alps, but I had a perfect experience there last October. It is one of the places where you get the most out of public transportation.
