Words can be powerful. Coming from a book publishing background, I truly believe in the power of words to heal and inspire . Whether you see yourself for the first time in a character in a book, or read someone else’s blog and finally feel a little bit less alone, words have the ability to get us through even the toughest of times. 

When I was going through infertility, if I was having a particularly rough day I would look up quotes from my favorite authors for words to help remind me that I was strong enough to get to the other side--if I could just take it one day, and one step, at a time. I’ve been a bit nostalgic for my own journey recently, so I thought I would revisit some of the authors, words, and books that got me through some of my darkest moments.

I love visiting a new world with every new book I pick up, but every once in a while an author will come along with a memoir that makes my breath catch in my throat and stay up way past my bedtime reading. Needless to say, if you haven’t read Cheryl Strayed’s books, Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things , what are you waiting for?! WILD is her unforgettable memoir about the grief of losing her mother, her decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone, and her physical and emotional journey to healing (it’s also a movie starring Reese Witherspoon). Tiny Beautiful Things is a compilation of pieces from Cheryl Strayed’s advice column in The Rumpus called Dear Sugar . It will make you cry big, chunky tears, but it will also leave you feeling endlessly hopeful. I can’t recommend either of them enough; they truly changed my life when I read them.

Then there’s Glennon Doyle. I recently read her latest book Untamed , and regardless of all the hype, it did not disappoint. In fact, after I finished it, I wanted to give it to every single solitary woman in my life. In Untamed , Glennon gives women permission to be unapologetically themselves, and she does it so eloquently and with poignant examples from her own life. It’s a message we all need, especially now, and no matter how in tune with ourselves we may think we already are.

It’s very, very easy to lose hope when you’re battling infertility. Sometimes, you just need to take a break from reading statistics and TTC forums, and read some feel-good infertility quotes instead.

When I was going through my own infertility journey , I know the emotional toll it took was even larger than the physical toll.

From the monthly reminders of failure from Aunt Flo, to the seemingly daily pregnancy announcements on Facebook, to the obliviously insensitive questions about your family plans… the hits never stop coming.

How to Cope with Infertility

Learning to cope with infertility is honestly a lifelong battle. I have two miracle babies, and I still wouldn’t say I’m “over” my infertility struggle. It’s affected me in more ways than I even realize.

But one thing I have learned is that the negativity will crush you, if you let it. I know, it’s easier said than done to just not feel sadness or anger or doubt. And that’s not what I’m saying – I actually think it’s important to feel all those things!

However, you also need to do your best to feel the good things. Let yourself feel hopeful for a new cycle. Let yourself be excited about the possibilities of a new treatment plan. Let yourself take relief in a month off of fertility treatments.

Because if you don’t let the light in, the darkness will suffocate you, and your future baby – who is coming, some day, some way, some how – needs your bright light.

Find your Infertility Mantra

One thing that always helps me hold on to a glimmer of light is having a mantra, quote, song lyric, or image to hold onto. I print it out and stick it on a wall, or write it on a post-it note next to my computer screen, or scribble it on my bathroom mirror using a dry-erase marker.

Wherever I put it, I make sure it’s in a place that I’ll see it every day, preferably multiple times throughout the day.

When you start to feel that negativity sinking in, find your mantra and read it.

Read it again, and again, and again, if you have to… until you start to believe it.

I had been inspired to take a hard exit from the Facebook pages and was legit kicking myself for not thinking of calling on David sooner.

My stomach flip-flopped. I paced around my kitchen and cracked my knuckles as I awaited his response.

I didn't have to wait long. My phone chimed with the donk donk sound from "Law & Order," notifying me I had a new message. David had responded:

"FUCK YES!!!"

Now it was my heart doing the flip-flopping. I couldn't believe he said yes — not just yes, but he didn't even have any further questions. This was the David I knew and loved. We could go months or even years without talking , but I could reach out to him out of the blue and he would be by my side to support me in a heartbeat.

It seemed like the perfect solution

I envisioned him as a fun uncle type of relative, who would also be a good male role model for my child. He would love my kid and be open and honest about being the biological father from day one.

I couldn't believe it. I had found a detour around my predicament, and now had a donor who would be an incredible asset in my child's life.

In between inseminations, David and I watched movies, danced and sang, and ate his delicious split pea soup until I thought we were going to turn green. Something quieted in my heart. All my anxious focus on getting pregnant was melting away. Now, I felt like it would happen. It had to, right?

I chose David because I wanted to be able to be certain that I wasn't going to screw up my kid — at least not by using the wrong donor sperm . Life doesn't offer those kinds of guarantees, unfortunately.

When we got his sperm analysis results back, we were heartbroken

Everything crumbled. David's sperm analysis results had come back. He was infertile. He texted me, clearly broken-hearted. He apologized, though it wasn't his fault. A screenshot of the results made it clear there was zero hope of getting pregnant with his sperm. I could tell David was hurting. Even though he had never planned on having a child, it doesn't necessarily feel good to know the option is off the table.

Heartbroken, I cried, alone, in my hotel room. For exactly one hour. Then I gathered myself together and started searching for a new donor back in DC on the off chance that I'd find someone great enough that I could avoid having to miss another cycle. I can't explain the determination that took over my brain and body during this entire fertility journey . Some unseen force has driven me to continue putting one foot in front of the other and my eyes have never wavered from the prize: a baby, a kiddo.

This rushed approach was exactly what I would have advised any other recipient to avoid doing. But faced with the crushing disappointment month after month of tracking my cycle, all for nothing, I knew I wouldn't be able to hold back if I could find someone promising with current STI records who was willing to know the kid from birth.

One donor rose to the top of the pile. His name was Eddie.

He was tall, handsome, a bit of a hippie — and he only worked with people who were willing to tell their kids the truth about where they come from; people willing to keep an open door of communication with him. This was significant because Eddie was Mexican American. He understood the importance of connecting the child with their cultural roots.

We started rapidly going through my preliminary vetting questions over video chat and agreed to meet in person to discuss whether it made sense to work together. And so, it was with steely determination (and not much else) that I flew back to DC to meet my new donor.
