travel live resorts

In the lobby of Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana , I put down my suitcase and backpack on the marble floor and took a deep breath. I’d arrived, after a hot, sweaty plane trip and a steamy taxi ride from the airport, to the luxury all-inclusive resort, which opened in February. Standing in the sleek, chandeliered reception area by a square pool filled with cheerful rubber ducks — a Live Aqua signature — I inhaled a fragrance both bright and comforting.

I didn’t think much about the aroma at that moment, beyond how pleasant it was. But when I entered my room shortly after, I smelled the same inviting scent. At dinner, I caught a hint of something sweet in the air. A couple of days later, in the spa, a beautifully exotic fragrance welcomed me.

It turns out that Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana — owned by Posadas , the largest hotel collection in Mexico — uses aromatherapy throughout its property to “wake up the senses.” It’s part of an indulgent sensorial experience that begins from the time you wake up in the morning till the instant you close your eyes at night.

The main lobby at Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana. Dominican Republic.

The visual sense is stimulated by modern architecture that works in harmony with the natural beauty of Uvero Alto Beach, on the northern point of Punta Cana. Music pumped through speakers hidden among the flower plantings, plus live performances at night, engage the sense of sound. Place a hand over the smooth sheets in the guestrooms or the cushioned furniture in the common areas and the sense of touch is automatically activated. Meanwhile, eight restaurants and snack bars featuring international cuisine are available throughout the day to tease the tastebuds.

For its unique aromatherapy program, Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana uses five fragrances around the property, all of which are custom-blended for it:

  • Aqua. This signature blend of peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary is refreshing, bright, and energizing — perfect after travel, which is why it’s used in the lobby.
  • Relax, a premium-grade lavender, is used to aid in deep relaxation.
  • Vanilla and cinnamon are used in the resort’s restaurants.
  • Lemongrass and ginger are featured at the reception area of the spa.
  • Citrus, rosemary, and similar invigorating oils can be found in the spa locker rooms.

Fragrance And Flavor: Scent In Live Aqua’s Restaurants

If it sounds strange that a fragrance would be pumped into a restaurant, where it might errantly mix with food smells, it’s generally not an issue at the Punta Cana resort, which has seven dining venues.

The fragrance used in dining rooms is a vanilla-cinnamon blend. For me, it was imperceptible in the larger dining spaces, like Liberi, the breakfast and lunch buffet. And in Cool Fever , the onsite bakery, it blended seamlessly with the buttery smells of pastry.

The only restaurant where the fragrance was in opposition to the meal was at Seishin , the resort’s Asian fusion eatery. I wound up with a table close to the electric diffuser, where the cookie-like fragrance was a mismatch with my sushi and dumplings. Not that it deterred me from eating, mind you.

Aromatherapy In The Spa

The Feel Harmony Spa is a centerpiece of the Live Aqua experience. A Prestige Partner of Barcelona-based NaturaBissé , one of the world’s top spa products manufacturers, it offers a large menu of aesthetic and bodywork services, all focused on extending the sensory experience.

I arrived about 30 minutes before my appointment so I could enjoy the hydrotherapy room other travelers had raved about. As it turns out, 30 minutes isn’t enough for full enjoyment of the spa. But more on that in a bit.

As soon as I entered the space, I noticed the lemongrass and ginger fragrance, a personal favorite. I’d accessed the touch-free menu via QR code in my room in advance, and reviewed about 20 different services, including facials, body wraps, basic Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, and combination treatments. All spa treatments use aromatics (in 90 percent natural, vegan formulas), but a few allow you to choose your fragrance.

I selected the Sensations Fusion massage and was offered a choice of four NaturaBissé pre-blended, scented dry oils: Fitness (mint and eucalyptus), Energizing (citrus, sage, and rosemary), De-Stress (lavender and grapeseed), and Detox (marine seaweeds and chia). “When people have the opportunity to pick the oil, they really get what their body needs for that moment,” Spa Director Mayra Ramirez explained. “It’s not just a scent. Maybe one day you need to energize, and another day you need to relax.”

Once I’d selected my favorite — Energizing, which reminded me of the Mediterranean — my massage therapist, Esther, led me back to the (scented) locker room, to change into my swimsuit. Then we headed to the hydrotherapy room. Besides its tranquil design, this part of the spa provides additional sensory indulgences, from the sound of the waterfall-like massage circuit in the center of the pool to a path of warm stones that gently heat the feet while triggering acupressure points.

A sauna in the Feel Harmony Spa. Live Aqua Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

After a dip in the pool, I spent a few minutes warming up in the sauna. I didn’t have enough time to try the showers, and I wish I had. There are four of varying temperatures, including one with a cooling cascade of water, and another with spray jets that target the chakras. Two of the showers also employ aromatherapy. The lesson: Arrive about an hour before your appointment at the spa, and take your time going through all the circuits, preferably more than once.

In the warm, dimly lit treatment room (there are singles and doubles, in case you’d like to do a couples or friends massage), which was lightly scented with peppermint, I sank into the padded table as Esther prepared the massage oil with my fragrance of choice. Over the next 50 minutes, she employed a variety of massage techniques, including Swedish, acupressure, gentle stretching, and Lomi Lomi, which derives from an indigenous Hawaiian healing tradition. I’m somewhat of a massage wimp and don’t enjoy anything that digs too deeply into tender tissues. The Sensations Fusion turned out to be an ideal, Goldilocks-style not-too-intense, not-too-gentle amount of pressure.

How Fragrance Is Used In The Guest Rooms

After the massage, I managed to rouse myself to get dressed and return to my room. With dinner in a couple of hours, I took a quick shower. When I emerged from the dual-headed stall, the steam had picked up the scent from my in-room diffuser: Aqua, the resort’s signature scent.

No matter which type of room you stay in — garden view, pool view with a hot tub on the terrace, premium swim-up, and several categories of luxury suites — it will come with an old-school reed diffuser set in an oversize glass jar on the bathroom counter. (Electric diffusers are used in public areas of the resort, for greater coverage.) Most rooms also have a “Dream Menu” with five oils: Aqua, Relax, Energy (a zingy combination of ginger and grapefruit), Romance (cozy vanilla and sandalwood), and Tranquility (a calming fusion of chamomile and peppermint). Four of those — everything but Romance — are included in a mini kit that guests can take home with them. Choose from the “Dream Menu” before 3 p.m., and housekeeping will set out a diffuser with the chosen oil blend in time for turn-down. The bathrooms are also stocked with Molton Brown amenities, which have their own range of distinctive scents.

The bathrooms in all Live Aqua Punta Cana suites feature a diffuser (left) and "Dream Menu." Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

My fragrance had been chosen for me in advance, but I didn’t mind. The last thing I remembered before I drifted off into a nap on the king-size bed was the trilling of a gray kingbird in the garden outside, and the honeyed herb smell of eucalyptus.

The next day, as I waited in the lobby for my taxi to the airport, I settled back against one of the cushioned wicker sofas and closed my eyes. Just as I had the day I arrived, I took in a whiff of air and exhaled. According to Ramirez, this is exactly the experience Live Aqua is trying to create for guests. “That’s why aroma is very important, to offer this kind of relaxation,” she said. “So when guests are going from one place to another, they just” — she drew in a deep inhale and smiled — “breathe.”

Want to keep the vacation vibes going, or give the gift of aromatherapy to friends? Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana sells additional kits featuring custom-blended essential oils in its gift shop.

The 9 Best Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resorts in Cancun

S ometimes the grown-ups need their own space – that's where adults-only resorts come in. For a cool, calm, no-kids-allowed vacation, Cancún is a great bet. With white sand beaches, sapphire-blue seas, nearby Mayan ruins, bustling nightlife and no shortage of flights from pretty much every major U.S. city, this Mexico destination is both convenient and full of activities for any kind of traveler.

To get the most bang for your buck in Cancún , opt for an all-inclusive resort, where your nightly fare typically covers food, drinks, accommodations, activities and standard amenities like Wi-Fi access. It's a great way to make sure you don't blow out your vacation budget; just be sure to read the fine print to see what activities and dining options may not be included. Here are some of the best resorts for an adults-only all-inclusive vacation in Cancún.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun

Nothing says fancy quite like a butler to take care of all your needs, from shoe shining to delivering pillows to your room – and this is just one of the offerings for guests at this lavish Le Blanc resort. While it's hard to pick a highlight from the many strengths of this property, guests rave about the dining options, which range from upscale French to sushi to a wood-fired bistro overlooking the beach. Past visitors have described the restaurants as elegant and the food as positively delicious, with on-point service.

Once you're ready to retire, the open-plan rooms make for a comfortable stay, with a double Jacuzzi, turndown service, top-shelf liquor in-suite and floor-to-ceiling windows. Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun also has quite a focus on wellness, so every room gets a daily spa credit to use on massages, manicures and beyond. Activities include paddleboard yoga to test your balance and aquatic spinning (think of a spin class in a pool).

Of course, luxury doesn't come cheap: Rates start around $900 per night for two.

Haven Riviera Cancún

This resort is located in a tranquil coastal spot a few miles south of Cancún – toward Playa del Carmen and well away from the uber-busy Hotel Zone. Set on 250 acres of landscaped grounds, Haven is certainly an accurate name for this resort. Fittingly, past visitors have praised the tranquil and relaxing ambiance at this resort, noting that it's great for a relaxing couples trip , and that you can find a touch more of a party vibe at one of the resort's four pools. The rooms feature a classy-yet-funky design, with natural textures and plenty of nods to the beach and jungle surroundings.

Those looking to splash out a bit more (literally and figuratively) can opt for the upscale Swim-Out Suites with a semiprivate pool right on your terrace. There are also unique wellness suites at Haven Riviera Cancún for travelers with allergies and other sensitivities. Out in the resort, it's easy to keep busy with activities ranging from macramé classes to cocktail tasting – as well as options like tennis, sailing and kayaking for more active folks. Dining and drinking options abound, from a sleek cocktail bar to nightclub, and a deluxe steakhouse down to no-fuss casual snack bars.

Rates officially start around $400 per night but tend to be pricier.

Beloved Playa Mujeres

For a seriously boutique resort experience, look to Beloved, located in Cancún's northern Playa Mujeres area, well away from the more crowded Hotel Zone. This resort isn't your cookie-cutter beachside destination: Its white geometrical architecture feels exquisitely modern, and even the simplest rooms are chic and contemporary, with the smallest spaces offering nearly 1,000 square feet of space for you to spread out into. Pay a little more, and options like the Swim-Up Suite are also an option.

Beloved Playa Mujeres is the kind of resort that pays attention to the small details. Extra touches like fresh fruit delivered to your room daily, in-room Bvlgari toiletries, premium liquor and a free hydrotherapy circuit for each guest make the experience feel extra special. The activities are especially diverse, too, with everything from cooking classes to bike tours to wellness workshops. You'll fuel it all with dining options that range from healthy to hearty, like French-Caribbean breakfasts or a juicy steakhouse dinner.

Take note: Beloved is not just adults-only; it's also a couples-only resort, so past guests suggest that you should expect more of a relaxed, romantic vibe than a party one. Rates start at about $600 per night.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Also located away from the bustling Hotel Zone is this five-star destination from the same company as nearby Beloved Playa Mujeres – but without the couples-only restriction. There's a broad selection of places to spread out and swim or sunbake here, with seven outdoor pools, lazy rivers, private beach access and plenty of bars. (And with guests barred from bringing portable speakers to these areas, relaxation should come easy.) But it'll be tempting to lounge in the luxurious rooms here, too: Even at the cheapest level, you'll have king-size beds, in-room Jacuzzis and tiled terraces for sipping a tropical drink.

Guest reviews praise the spacious rooms and gorgeous views at Excellence Playa Mujeres, noting that they're meticulously clean. At the higher end are two-story suites with plunge pools and ocean views. Whatever accommodations you choose, you'll be treated to nice touches like flowers and sparkling wine on arrival, as well as 24-hour room service. The numerous restaurants here are worth visiting, too – they run the gamut from spicy Mexican fare to a casually refined Italian trattoria. Sporty vacationers are well-served here, with activities like dance classes and paddleboarding; options like deep-sea fishing can be booked for an extra fee.

Rates start around $700 per night.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Those with an eye for design will love this resort, located in a quieter spot just north of Cancún proper. Atelier Playa Mujeres has a focus on Mexican art and design, and the end result is a stylish out-of-the-box vibe. Whether you're in the room or out in the resort, expect wood and marble fixtures, avant-garde furniture and plenty of local touches that make Atelier feel like a unique experience. Rooms come with either jungle, golf course or ocean views as well as spacious balconies at 100-plus square feet. You'll also be treated to high-quality wine and liquor in your minibar, in addition to toiletries from renowned British company Molton Brown.

Outside your suite, Atelier has an intriguing array of activities from fat bike tours and art workshops to kayaking and volleyball. Dining and drinking is another strength here: Past guests highly recommend the tequila tasting class, and they also rave about the menu options across the 13 restaurants on the property.

Take note: Atelier Playa Mujeres allows guests aged 16 and up (though you may encounter younger kids on the public beach). Rates start around $650 per couple, per night.

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

This Hyatt property boasts the widest beach in Cancún's happening Hotel Zone, with an infinity pool overlooking it to boot. While it's obviously a formidable place to lounge in the sun, you also won't get bored, with amenities such as live mariachi shows and an Olympic-sized lap pool. The sizable whitewashed rooms at Hyatt Zilara Cancun start at 650 square feet and are equipped with luxuries ranging from rain showerheads to pillow menus to regularly stocked minibars. Those who go for more upscale suites will also get swim-up pool access, a balcony hammock and even a guaranteed beach cabana right on the Caribbean Sea.

All-inclusive guests can choose between six restaurants and five bars serving seafood, pizza and more – and it wouldn't be a Cancún resort without a swim-up bar. Past visitors note that they enjoyed the upbeat party atmosphere by some of the pools and at certain events – from a beach barbecue to a foam party – but it's equally possible to find quiet spots for relaxation.

Rates start around $650 per night.

Sun Palace Cancun

For a romantic vacay, consider this resort at the southern end of Cancún's Hotel Zone. As a couples-only resort, there won't be a bachelor party or a spring breaker in sight. Plenty of past vacationers recommend Sun Palace as a great option for honeymoons or anniversaries, often highlighting the above-and-beyond friendly service from staff. The resort also offers honeymoon packages, featuring extras like a special romantic dinner and breakfast in bed.

Whether you're on a special trip or just regular vacation, all rooms here offer at least partial ocean views. They go well beyond the basics, with fluffy robes and slippers, premium liquor, and a double whirlpool tub, even in the most budget-friendly room. Pricier options like a honeymoon suite will also get you bonuses like a private lounge area on the beach, complete with waiter service.

Beyond romance and relaxation by the pool, beach or bar, you can sign on for activities like tours of Mayan ruins or ATV trips through the jungle (extra fees may apply). When you're starving after a big day touring, there are four upscale restaurants serving options like Thai or Mexican fare, as well as more casual cafe and snacky choices.

What it's like to live at an all-inclusive resort for a month

JT Genter

At a time when few travelers were considering trips to the Dominican Republic , my wife Katie and I booked a month-long stay there. Why? Well, when you can book an all-inclusive resort for under $39 per night, we figured we might as well move in for as long as we could.

From bottomless bottles of beer to battling for dinner reservations, here's what it was like to live out of an all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic for a month.

Visit TPG's Caribbean destination hub for more stories about traveling to the region on points and miles, where to stay and what to do while you're there.

How we booked an all-inclusive for under $39 a night

We were able to book an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic for just 8,000 Choice Privileges points per night, and we were able to buy most of the points we needed at a blended rate of 0.485 cents each. That's a rate of just $38.80 per night.

I'm going to show you how we did it as it's a great — albeit extreme — example of how valuable Choice Privileges points can be. But let's get it out of the way upfront: This great deal isn't available anymore.

As with many incredible deals, this sweet spot ended prematurely. But, it's a reminder not to ignore less-popular points and miles programs like Choice.

When browsing all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic bookable with points, we stumbled across a couple of Choice properties costing just 8,000 points per night: Emotions All-Inclusive Juan Dolio and Emotions All-Inclusive Puerto Plata — both relatively new additions to Choice's Ascend Hotel Collection.

At current TPG valuations , Choice points are worth 0.6 cents each. So, that meant we could book an all-inclusive resort for just $48 worth of points.

While paying $48 per night would be incredible, we could do even better than that. Once a year, Choice sells its points at the best rate of the year through the U.S. Travel Association's Daily Getaways . This year, we could buy Choice points for as little as 0.482 cents each.

And that's exactly what we did.

Related: Sign up for the free daily TPG newsletter for more travel tips .

As digital nomads who don't have a place of our own , we figured, why not take it to the extreme? U.S. citizens can spend up to 30 days in the Dominican Republic without needing to apply for a visa, and Choice doesn't cap the number of award nights you can book. So, why shouldn't we book an all-inclusive resort for 28 nights for just 224,000 points?

When the Choice packages went live through Daily Getaways, we immediately bought the maximum of two packages of 55,000 points each for $530 and two packages of 42,000 points each for $410 for a total of 194,000 points for $940.

travel live resorts

That left us 30,000 points short of the 224,000 points needed for the 28-night stay. The Choice Privileges Visa Signature Card just so happened to be offering 32,000 bonus points for spending $1,000 in the first 90 days after being approved for the card. So, I applied for the card and ... got rejected. Despite my credit score, it seems Barclays didn't want to offer me yet another credit card.

Related: 18 free ways to check your credit score

I even offered to transfer some of my credit line from my AAdvantage Aviator MasterCard or JetBlue Plus Card, but I couldn't get a reconsideration agent to approve my application . Thankfully, I had just enough points in my account from prior Choice stays and promotions to cover the remaining 30,000 points that I needed.

travel live resorts

Even better, we weren't stuck with the base room for this redemption. As is fairly typical with Choice Privileges redemptions, there was a wide range of rooms bookable at just 8,000 points per night.

Since we could choose any room for the same price, we focused on the rooms with the best features. We narrowed down our choices to two room types: a room with a swim-up pool outside the patio and one with an in-room whirlpool:

travel live resorts

After looking at all the photos we could find, we decided the room with the whirlpool seemed to have a better working space — after all, we'd be working from this room for four weeks — and the personal Jacuzzi was fairly alluring.

How much would this cost to book with cash instead of points? We compared the cost to a similar room and found it would cost $8,236 — discounted from a standard cost of $13,160 -- for a 28-night stay.

travel live resorts

Comparing that cost with the 224,000 Choice points we paid (with no out-of-pocket cost), we got nearly 3.7 cents of value per Choice point from this redemption. And, considering we paid just $940 for the vast majority of the points, we scored nearly an 89% discount off of the cash price by buying points for cheap.

The 8,000-point rate for this property was scheduled to last through at least Sept. 15, 2019. But mere days after our booking — and perhaps triggered by such a significant booking — Choice Privileges abruptly ended the 8,000-point rate. All award bookings required 30,000 points per night from that date forward, and that rate has stuck ever since.

While it's a bummer this sweet spot ended prematurely, there are still plenty of great opportunities for getting good value out of Choice points. As I finish writing this story, I'm staying in a hotel in the heart of Osaka, Japan for just 8,000 points per night. In the past, Katie and I have booked suites in Europe for 8,000 points per night and a "suite" in New York City for just 8,000 points per night .

However, Choice periodically changes the points rate for award nights at all properties, and what was a good deal in the past may no longer be available — just like with these all-inclusive resorts.

While we didn't get a chance to share this great deal with readers before it was pulled, TPG has shared numerous incredible deals — ranging from $277 round-trip flights to South Africa to $800 round-trip flights in Cathay Pacific first class — as well as plenty of guides for how to get the most out of your points and miles.

Related: The best ways to get to the Caribbean using points and miles

We figured this would be one of the more "interesting" check-ins we've ever done, and we weren't surprised to receive a bewildered, "You're staying how many nights?"

But we weren't expecting that to be followed up with, "Do you have a confirmation?" and "Will you forward it to me?"

It seems that the Emotions reservation system didn't show our Choice-booked reservation. So, after forwarding my confirmation email to the front desk, we waited while the agent stepped into the office to figure out what was going on.

travel live resorts

The longer we waited, the more concerned we got. Katie checked availability to see that the resort had plenty of availability for the Thursday night we'd arrived on, but the weekend was showing as sold out. We started to check for airline award availability in case our reservation wasn't going to be honored and we needed to head home.

Thankfully, after about 15 minutes, the check-in agent returned with the good news that everything was fine. While our room wasn't ready yet, we were invited to head to the buffet restaurant for lunch. At lunch, an employee found us to tell us that our room was ready, and we and our bags were carted over to the building for our month-long move in.

travel live resorts

One of the final parts of the check-in was getting plastic gold-colored locking wristbands that indicated to staff we were guests in the adults-only building and had access to the special adults-only pool.

In addition to our own, we also got to know the other wristband colors well over the next four weeks. When we saw an orange-colored wristband on a guest, we knew that they were part of the most recent crop of Sunwing Vacations visitors — meaning they were from Canada and likely spoke French.

Spending a month at an all-inclusive

Since giving up our apartment in Austin, Texas to become digital nomads in June 2017, we've constantly been on the move. For us, a "long stay" somewhere is more than four nights, and we have rarely spent more than a week in one place. So, we went into this stay wondering if we were going to be bored out of our minds.

We were relieved upon arrival to find that there was an extensive activities schedule:

travel live resorts

We figured we would end up doing each of the activities at least once. In the end, we only did two of the official activities: bingo and archery.

travel live resorts

What did we do instead? Well, lots of work.

But, don't worry, we didn't just work. Most evenings, we relaxed in the adults-only hot tub next to our building, and we always had a grown-up beverage in hand.

travel live resorts

Also, we made sure to take advantage of having a private whirlpool — which was on the balcony in our first room and inside our second room.

travel live resorts

It didn't take long for us to settle into a routine. After getting our dinner reservation each morning — more about that below — we would head to the gym to work out before grabbing breakfast. We'd head back to the room and shower before settling down for a day of work.

As workaholics, we'd often work right up until just before the lunch buffet closed, and we'd usually work after lunch until it was about an hour before our dinner reservation. At that point, we'd scramble down to the whirlpool with our Nalgene bottles — to avoid having to use the small plastic cups that the bar served -- and enjoy a drink before dinner.

travel live resorts

Dining and drinking

In the generally low-stress atmosphere of an all-inclusive resort, by far the most frustrating aspect was getting dinner reservations. While there were three restaurants at the resort, only two restaurants would be open most nights.

Each of these restaurants would only accept up to 60 reservations per night, divvied up across six groups of 10 at set seating times between 6 and 9 p.m. This meant no more than 120 guests were going to be able to get dinner at one of the sit-down restaurants and other guests would be relegated to the buffet restaurant.

Related: 14 mistakes to avoid at all-inclusive resorts

To get a reservation, guests needed to go to the buffet restaurant hostess desk each morning to get a reservation from the employee manning the podium. If you got there early enough to get a reservation, you'd get a small slip of color-coordinated paper with your reservation time on it. You'd need to bring this to the restaurant within 10 minutes of your time slot or risk losing your dinner reservation.

travel live resorts

Due to the limited number of slots, dinner reservations were often full by 8:30 a.m. So, we started by waking up each morning to get to the reservations desk right when it opened at 8 a.m. before working out in the gym.

But, this plan wasn't foolproof. Many of the times we would show up at 8, the reservation sheet wasn't available yet and we were told to come back. Rather than waiting around, we'd go work out and come back to then sometimes find out that the reservation sheet was full.

Through trial and error, we learned to get to the reservations desk between 8:10 and 8:15 a.m., as that was a sweet spot of when the reservations were open and there would still be reservations available. And the competition was stiff. A couple of times we had to butt in to defend our place in line when other guests would conveniently ignore the line.

Eating and drinking the same things

The resort was understandably set up to cater to guests staying for a week or less. Between the three sit-down restaurants and the buffet restaurant, guests staying a reasonable amount of time shouldn't get tired of the food options.

However, we weren't staying a reasonable amount of time. Despite that, we were surprised we didn't get tired of eating at the same restaurants.

To avoid getting bored with the same food options, we challenged ourselves to try every dish on every menu at least once. By the time that we completed this challenge, we had our favorite dishes to come back to — from the fajitas at the Mexican restaurant to the camarofongo de platanos at the Dominican restaurant.

travel live resorts

While we tried a variety of foods for dinner, we quickly settled into a routine for breakfast. As soon as we got to the breakfast buffet, we beelined it to the egg station to get our omelets started. After learning the Spanish words for each ingredient, I was ordering my omelet solely in Spanish by the end of the second week.

travel live resorts

Our stay occurred as headlines about tourists getting sick and dying at Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts were starting to fade, but the concerns were front of mind. For that reason, we typically ordered beer to drink at the bars. In the Dominican Republic, there's one beer that dominates the market: Presidente. And we got to know El Presidente very well by the end of our stay.

The realities of living in a place for a month

When most people pack for a trip to an all-inclusive resort, they pack all of the clothes that they need for the trip with a plan to fly back with a bag full of dirty clothes. But, when your stay is almost a month long, there are just two practical choices: re-wear dirty clothes or do laundry.

Living on the road, we are no strangers to doing laundry while on the go . We carry pods of laundry detergent in our Osprey packs and make sure to book a hotel with guest laundry every week or so.

However, we didn't know going into this stay if there was guest laundry at the resort, and we landed in the DR with not much in the way of clean clothes after a hectic travel schedule. So, we needed to figure the situation out quickly.

It wasn't long before we got the bad news: There was no guest laundry and the resort charged by the piece for laundry — and it was the typical steep prices you might expect to find at a resort. While there were surely laundry services around Puerto Plata, we were marooned in a gated community surrounded by other resorts. So, we didn't find a good alternative to doing laundry ourselves the old-fashioned way: hand-washing our clothes.

travel live resorts

Every few days we would wash our clothes in one sink, rinse them in another, wring them out, roll them in a towel and twist to remove more moisture before hanging it up to dry — either out on our balcony or on the decorative divider next to our bed.

travel live resorts

Four weeks is a long time to go without a haircut for most guys, and after a few weeks, I was looking pretty shaggy. At the resort's salon and spa, I made an appointment for a $25 men's haircut.

The barber seemed inexperienced and nervous, and it took an hour for her to cut my hair. It wasn't perfect — I needed to clean it up with a pair of scissors we carry in a first-aid kit — but she tried, and the cut actually only cost $15. So, I tipped her the additional $10 I'd expected to pay in the first place.

travel live resorts

Venturing outside the complex

As travelers always on the go, we figured we wouldn't be able to stay put for a month. So, we researched the Dominican Republic and found places that we'd want to explore in the area around Puerto Plata. We figured we could rent a car either through the resort or from a nearby location to drive around the nearby mountains. But, one thing was for sure: There's no way that we were going to spend a whole month only in the resort area.

The first weekend started a few days after we arrived, and we figured there was no rush to explore. Especially after a hectic travel schedule coming into this stay, why not just stick around the resort, enjoy the open bar and catch up on work and sleep? So, that's what we did.

We worked the next week figuring we'd surely venture out on the weekend. Then something strange happened. As we entered the second weekend, Tropical Storm Dorian formed in the Caribbean Sea. Forecasters called for the storm to develop into a hurricane and hit the Dominican Republic. To prepare, we booked award flights out of Puerto Plata for mid-week and stuck around to enjoy the resort while we still could.

travel live resorts

While growing up in Florida, I was an unlikely but effective hurricane repellent. Numerous storms would curve out of their expected path when I was in the middle of the cone. And my lucky streak continued again in the DR.

Dorian defied forecasts and made a sweeping curve around the Dominican Republic. As Hurricane Dorian rapidly strengthened, I considered flying into Florida to see if I could keep my streak of turning hurricanes alive. But, we ended up spending our third weekend watching the reports out of the Bahamas in horror from the DR.

By our fourth and final weekend, we still hadn't left the complex. On Sunday — our last chance to escape — we decided to head into town to visit a church and explore the town. The resort complex prohibited ride-hailing companies from entering the complex, so we walked 10 minutes to the resort entrance to get an Uber for one-tenth of the overpriced taxi rates.

My first visit to the Dominican Republic was in 1999 as part of a church mission trip. The purpose of the mission was to help with the renovation of an Episcopal Church, but the lasting impact on me was a passion to experience different cultures and an appreciation for the blessings of my life. So, I was excited to join a Sunday-morning church service at that same church 20 years later.

After church, we walked around Puerto Plata, exploring everything from the historic Spanish fort to the informal fish market on the beach.

The (lack of) birthday celebration

Katie's birthday happened to be near the end of our four-week stay. We aren't big on celebrating birthdays, but after having seen some celebrations for other guests at dinner, I figured I'd ask to see if we could get a cake for Katie for her birthday.

The manager at the guest relations office took down our room number and the time of our reservation that night at the Dominican restaurant, and told me they'd arrange for a cake for her at dinner. I offered to pay, but I was assured that there wasn't a charge.

But after finishing dinner, there was no sign of a cake. I stalled as long as I could, but it was eventually clear that there wasn't going to be a cake.

When I visited the guest relations office the next day, the manager apologized and said it was too short notice — which I could understand. The manager recorded our dinner reservation time for that night and said that they would make it up to us that night. But again, there was no celebration or cake at the end of our dinner.

After two unsuccessful attempts, I figured it wasn't worth continuing to try to arrange a celebration.

But then, on Monday morning — two days after Katie's birthday — we received a knock on the door just after 8 a.m. It was room service, delivering a breakfast feast.

travel live resorts

After 24 breakfasts at the property, we had so clearly settled into our breakfast choices the staff knew exactly what we ate. So, they prepared and delivered the breakfast to us. The meal came without reason or explanation, so it's still unclear to us whether it was tied to Katie's birthday or perhaps to our pending departure a few days later.

Would we do it again?

While Emotions by Hodelpa Playa Dorada certainly isn't the fanciest all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic, we enjoyed our month-long stay. Katie and I have already agreed that if the award rate drops to a reasonable rate again, we would go back — if only to revisit the place where we had this crazy experience. However, we wouldn't stay for an entire month, and we would prioritize seeing more of the country outside the complex walls.

However, this incredible deal reinforced our belief that there are often amazing redemptions available to be found if you look. While it's pretty rare to get more than 6x TPG's valuation , there are plenty of ways to stretch your points; here are examples to consider using Hilton , Hyatt , IHG and Marriott points. And when points rates don't provide a good redemption, don't overlook booking an all-inclusive through a credit card portal .

The 12 best luxury all-inclusive resorts around the world in 2024

Briley Kenney

A vacation or a trip away is about relaxing, or rather taking a break from the bustle and monotony of daily life. There are some amazing luxury hotel chains to visit, sure. Still, the best trips unburden you by including the preparation of your meals and drinks, offering an abundance of activities with minimal planning, and more. The less you have to do, the better. If you’ve never been on an all-inclusive trip before, that’s precisely the point. Everything is included and prepared for you, and there’s really no need to pay for much else — often, your food and drinks are covered. You can tip, buy some souvenirs, and maybe try out a few snacks or meals outside of what’s available, but again, you don’t have to fret about it if you don’t want to. Surprisingly, there are a lot of all-inclusive resorts and destinations if you know where to look. Pack your bags, don’t forget your suntan lotion, and let’s explore.

Alila Ventana Big Sur

Big sur, california.

  • Included: Food, non-alcoholic drinks, amenities
  • Alcohol Extra: Yes

If you live in the United States, you might not think about an all-inclusive inside the country, but the Alila Ventana Big Sur resort is inarguably one of the most beautiful places to stay. It’s near the redwood groves, California’s incredible coastal forest with one-of-a-kind fauna. There are nearly 60 guest rooms, each with a balcony or private deck, incredible views, and a fully stocked mini-bar. Meals and most amenities are included, although alcohol is extra. There’s a mountainside spa on site, plenty of pools, and Japanese-style hot baths.

Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa

Dubai, united arab emirates.

  • Included: Food, drinks, amenities, activities

Al Maha is billed as a desert oasis and hideaway, about 45 minutes from the city, with over 40 gorgeous suites. It’s part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection and offers all-you-can-eat gourmet food, with three meals a day, and a nearby Terrace Bar to kick back and have a drink after your adventures. Other amenities include an on-site spa, private decks for each room, a desert safari, and a plunge pool. Two activities are included with the price of your stay.

  • The Best Luxury Hotels in Portland, Oregon

andBeyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Botswana, africa.

This spectacular safari destination in the grassy plains of South Africa is rich with animals and wildlife like you’ve never seen before. The luxury resort is also something to behold, and your accommodations include safari tours, boat tours, meals, and drinks.

Castle Hot Springs

Morristown, arizona.

  • Included: Food, amenities

If your idea of a getaway is a tranquil hideaway in a beautiful part of the country with views you’ll probably never find again, Castle Hot Springs should be your first choice. As a bonus, you don’t need a passport to visit. Located about an hour from Phoenix and filled with bungalows and cabins, this resort offers free meals, amenities, and more. If you want alcohol, you can also add on a drink credit for $25 per day per guest.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

Cabo san lucas, mexico.

  • Included: Food, drinks, amenities, activities, WiFi in the room
  • Alcohol Extra: No (Select alcohol is included)

If you want to escape daily life and visit an extraordinary place, why not stay at one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Baja California? Romantic couple retreats, family trips, or just some fun in the sun, you name it, it’s all possible at the Grand Velas Los Cabos in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The property features seven on-site restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, multiple pools, and more.

Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana

Punta cana, dominican republic.

  • Included: Food, drinks, amenities, activities, free public WiFi

Sister resorts, the Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, are two incredible and close properties in the Dominican Republic. Zilara is adults-only, while Ziva is family-friendly. Most notably, the Canapolis Waterpark is some of the most fun you’ll have at any age, and kids especially will love the fast and frenetic slides. There are restaurants, bars, and shops galore with various local cuisine. As a bonus, if you have Hyatt rewards points, you can use them to secure a reduced stay.

Jade Mountain

Soufriere, st. lucia.

Nestled in the Caribbean, Saint Lucia is a breathtaking island, and Jade Mountain is an all-inclusive resort on the coastline. That also makes it the perfect romantic getaway. There are a variety of packages, most of which include food and beverages along with access to some amenities and activities like water sports, yoga, and more.

Lizard Island Resort

Great barrier reef, australia.

If you like snorkeling, diving, or water sports, you’ll love exploring the Great Barrier Reef, and the Lizard Island Resort is uniquely positioned to offer just that. As the name suggests, it’s situated on an island away from the mainland but includes everything you need to have a wonderful time. Luxury packages include fine dining, drinks, and a variety of experiences like a full-day reef tour, fishing charters, and more.

Mohonk Mountain House

New paltz, new york.

  • Included: Food, non-alcoholic drinks, amenities, activities, WiFi

If you want to stay in the country and want something different from the paradise and island setting, Mohonk Mountain House is right up your alley. This faux Victorian property borrows many elements from European architecture, offering activities ranging from horseback riding to archery and axe throwing. Inclusive pricing comes with farm-to-table local cuisine, various activities, WiFi, and kids’ club access if you’re visiting with your family.

Hoba Wawi, Sumba, Indonesia

  • Included: Food, non-alcoholic drinks, amenities, activities

While there’s no direct travel to the secluded island — you have to fly to Bali and then hop on a connected flight — it’s well worth the trip. You’ll get amazing views of the Indian Ocean and access to property amenities like a private pool, horseback riding, and hiking trails. One of the more unique experiences is an open-air restaurant with a sandy floor — it’s like dining right on the beach.

Sandals Royal Caribbean

Montego bay, jamaica.

  • Alcohol Extra: No (Premium liquor and wine are included)

When it comes to all-inclusives, no other location or brand matches Sandals’ renown. This adults-only getaway is perfect if you want to kick back and relax in a waterfront villa, Maldives-style. Except it’s much closer to home, located in gorgeous Montego Bay, Jamaica. It’s a fantastic romantic getaway for couples, young or old, and makes for an ideal anniversary hotspot. Alcohol, premium liquor, and select wines are included, and bars are all over the property, including a swim-up bar. You also get unlimited dining at the nine on-site restaurants. It really puts the “inclusive” in all-inclusive.

The Westin Reserva Conchal

Playa conchal, guanacaste, costa rica.

  • Included: Food, drinks, amenities, room service

If you want to live on the beach for a while in one of the most beautiful locales in the world, visit the Westin Reserva Conchal off the coast of Costa Rica. Hundreds of rooms, a lagoon-style pool, family-friendly activities and amenities, and incredible cuisine await you. Several bars and restaurants are also on-site, so you don’t have to leave the property to make the most of your stay. Meals at resort restaurants are included, alongside select alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. You also have a minibar in your room that’s included and stocked once daily, and 24-hour complimentary room service is available, too.

All your questions about luxury all-inclusive resorts answered

What makes them an “all-inclusive” destination.

Anything “all-inclusive,” from cruises to resort stays, includes pretty much everything you need to enjoy your vacation. Usually, you have access to unlimited food, drinks —sometimes including adult beverages — activities, and entertainment. In most cases, all accessible amenities and events are on the resort property, but sometimes, you’ll receive vouchers to visit an off-property attraction or venue free or at a reduced price.

With the right all-inclusive trip, you can leave your wallet and most of your money at home if you bring any.

Is every all-inclusive resort the same?

No. Not only are they managed and owned by separate brands, but they also sometimes have different guidelines and inclusions. For example, an adult-themed all-inclusive might include free alcohol and adult beverages, while a family-based all-inclusive won’t — though alcohol packages might be available as an extra charge.

What to research before booking at an all-inclusive resort?

Here are a few things to consider before officially booking your trip:

  • Is airfare included, and how much does it cost?
  • Does it include open bar access, and if not, is there an alcohol package available, and how much is it?
  • Do you really get unlimited food and all-you-can-eat?
  • Are there food types that are not included, like shellfish or seafood?
  • How many restaurants are on the property, and which are included in your all-inclusive ticket price?
  • Is there an in-suite bar, and does it cost extra?
  • What activities and amenities are available and included?
  • Are there activities and events available for your family, particularly your children?
  • Is there a day camp or care center for kids?
  • Is WiFi access included, and is it even available for an extra charge?
  • How is gratuity handled? What about taxes? Will you have to pay these separately? Do you have to pre-pay?

What are the different types of all-inclusive destinations?

It helps to know the difference:

  • A la Carte: These resorts are similar to an all-inclusive, with many on-property amenities available and included in your stay, but you pick and choose which services you want.
  • Self-Catering: These resorts provide many amenities, and it’s up to you to use them. Most self-catering venues aren’t “all-inclusive” in that everything is included in your stay. Make sure you read the fine print.
  • Half-Board: Half-board resorts are extremely limited compared to all-inclusive resorts. They might offer Continental breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but only with basic selections, and there are no snacks or desserts. Unlimited drinks, meals, and extras are usually off the table.
  • Full-Board: Full-board resorts take things further than half-board but are much more limited. Meals at certain restaurants, certain drinks, and specific amenities may be included, with more available than a half-board location, but the selections will always pale in comparison to a true all-inclusive.

Always prioritize what you’re looking for, and double-check that it’s available before signing the invoice. Some beach resorts might include alcohol and adult beverages, but top-shelf liquors cost extra. Others might include certain meals like breakfast or lunch, meaning you’ll have to fend for yourself come dinner time.

The limitations mean these resorts cost less overall, which can be good if you’re not interested in full liquor packages or extra amenities like waterparks. But if there’s something you know you’ll want to experience, make sure it’s included.

Traveling by air doesn't come without its physical tolls. Hours spent in a pressurized cabin with limited movement and dry hydration levels can negatively impact our skin and immune system in ways we don't immediately notice. One of the simplest yet surprisingly effective ways to counteract these effects is by taking a cold shower after a flight. While it might not be the most appealing thing in the world to do after a flight, the cold exposure might just be worth it. Let's explore how this simple act can be a game-changer for frequent flyers. Benefits of cold showers after a flight

Revitalizing the skin One of the most notable changes that you may have experienced after air travel is how harsh it can be to the skin. The low humidity levels in airplane cabins can harm the natural moisture barrier on your skin and lead to dehydration or even breakouts. A cold shower can work wonders in this scenario.

If you're planning on traveling to an international destination, getting a passport is one of the first things on your to-do list. A U.S. passport is required to enter any other country, including Mexico and Canada. However, the U.S. Department of State also offers a passport card -- a smaller, wallet-sized version of a passport. While it might seem intriguing to opt for a passport card over a standard passport book, the smaller price comes with some limitations to consider. Below, we'll break down the differences between a passport card vs. book and how to determine which option is best for you. Passport card vs. book A standard passport book is required to enter any country by air travel. This means if you're planning on heading to the airport, you'll need to get a passport book regardless of your final destination. A passport card is a smaller, wallet-sized version of a passport that allows entry only into Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, or the Caribbean. A passport card cannot be used for air travel and is only valid for land or sea travel. For this reason, the passport card is a great option if you're planning on driving into Mexico or Canada. Many people who live in states that border these countries opt for a passport card so they can easily enter bordering countries.

A passport card is also a good option for those who want to get a valid form of ID to travel domestically. If you don't have a driver's license (REAL ID), a passport card can be used instead for domestic air travel.

Traveling to Canada from the United States is relatively straightforward, but the documentation required can vary depending on your mode of transportation and citizenship status. While a passport is the most widely accepted form of identification for international travel, alternative options are available for U.S. citizens entering Canada by land or sea.

What you need to know about traveling to Canada So, what exactly do you need to cross into Canada? It really depends on how you're getting there. What documents do I need to cross the Canadian border by car? If you're a U.S. citizen traveling to Canada by land or sea, you have a few options for acceptable documentation:

How does KAYAK know what to put in this guide?

As a frequent visitor to all-inclusive resorts, I know the ins and outs of finding a great deal. From my first all-inclusive experience honeymooning with my wife on beaches in the Dominican Republic to our most recent vacation with our five children, I can attest to the benefits of cheap all-inclusive resorts.

I put this guide together through years of travel experience, consulting with other experts who have visited these specific resorts, and reviewing the KAYAK rating system to determine. Please note all prices were accurate as of 21/03/2024 and are subject to change.

FAQs about cheap all-inclusive resorts

You can find cheap all-inclusive resorts all over the world on KAYAK, where you can personalize your search to match your exact budget, schedule, and every other detail to find your dream vacation.

You can begin researching your flights through KAYAK, using search features and filters to customize your travel plans to your style and budget.

All-inclusive family resorts are a great choice to maximize time with your kids and loved ones. Find the best all-inclusive family resorts in this list, with options for all budgets.

Yes, many resorts offer all-inclusive experiences specifically for adults. Use the ‘adults only’ filter within the amenities section when searching on KAYAK to find the best options.

Depending on the popularity of an all-inclusive resort, you may want to book your reservation a full year in advance. However, regardless of the popularity, I recommend a minimum of 3 months in advance to ensure you can arrange the rest of your travel accommodations.

Basically, he tells his clients, Akiko, OK, he's initiating with a buy, $61 target, a few different reasons, he says. One, he just thinks MGM is fundamentally misvalued, says-- he thinks they have several growth opportunities ahead. He talks about, for example Dubai hotel, mentions a Japan Casino development, and he says compelling free cash flow and stock buyback value creation path, thinks MGM could theoretically buy as much as 5 billion of stock over the next five years.

AKIKO FUJITA: Yeah, it's interesting to see how they look at MGM specifically being misvalued, saying that they manage the operations of a casino leases the underlying asset, paying rent to a landlord. But we view the lease payment as an operating expense and deduct it from the EBITDA generated to arrive at a true cash EBITDA. So they're saying that the market isn't necessarily looking at the right figures to value MGM where it should be.

The casino opportunity, certainly, an interesting one, that Japan casino. It feels like has been in development for some time. But that's something that analysts have been flagging for a while since they did a move forward on that several years ago. Marriott, another hotel that Mizuho has initiated coverage on with a neutral rating, price target at $263 a share, specifically Mizuho saying that near-term, a net unit growth estimates of potential upside, but they are concerned that it's that longer-term trends are decelerating.

JOSH LIPTON: MGM, by the way, he does mention some risks for his clients to think about before you pile in, mentions competitive pressure. There's obviously operational risk, legislative risk, not to mention geopolitical risks. But that's not his base case, obviously. He's build up on it.

This Is the Best U.S. City to Live in for 2024

A mid-size city in Illinois took the top prize in a recent survey by Niche.com.

travel live resorts

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

If you’re looking to move this year, you are not alone. Last year, a survey found that over a quarter of people either have specific plans to relocate or want to do so in the future. And according to data by the U.S. Census Bureau, 25.6 million Americans, or almost eight percent of the population, moved in 2023 , with many seeking better education and a more family-friendly environment.

If these are also important factors for you, consider relocating to Naperville, Illinois. This city of about 150,000, west of Chicago, was just named the best place to live in 2024 by Niche.com (it was also on our Best Places to Live in Illinois list, as recommended by real estate experts). The study takes into account overall livability criteria like crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics, school system, and access to amenities in over 220 cities across the nation.

“With outstanding quantitative and qualitative scores across many of the categories we use to evaluate cities, Naperville secured this year’s top spot for best cities to live in America for the first time ever after years on the rise,” Luke Skurman, CEO at Nich, told Travel+Leisure. Skurman added the city ranked first in the public schools and family-friendly places categories and was third in the housing category.

Naperville dates back to the 1800s, and its long history is reflected in the variety of architectural styles that define its cityscape. It sits on the banks of the DuPage River, and its scenic riverfront is one of the main attractions drawing residents and visitors alike. With multiple sports complexes, miles of hiking trails, and a couple of forest preserves, the city offers plenty of year-round outdoor recreation.

Because Naperville is just 35 miles west of Chicago, its residents also have access to the Windy City’s job market and economic opportunities, resulting in a median household income that is almost twice the nation’s average, according to Niche . However, unlike other cities with excellent public school systems and family amenities, housing prices have not reached stratospheric levels. Zillow data shows that the median home value in Naperville is $538,826. However, that number is ten percent higher than last year, so prices are on the rise.

Second on Niche’s list is The Woodlands in Texas. This community north of Houston came on top in the housing category and was recently highlighted as one of the most affordable places to retire in the South . The median home value here is $303,00 2, which is below the national average.

And the bronze medal goes to Cambridge, Massachusetts. This Boston suburb, which is home to several top-rated universities, including Harvard and MIT, ranked first in the Best Cities for Young Professionals category. However, with a median home price of $962,679, it received a low score in the housing category.

I've been to 35 all-inclusive resorts. Here are 10 mistakes I always see first-timers make.

  • I've stayed at all-inclusive resorts around the world and seen first-timers make the same mistakes.
  • Don't go overboard on the frozen drinks, and never fill your plate during the first pass at a buffet.
  • Pack an insulated travel mug and check out water-sport rentals and amenities at sister properties.

Insider Today

Vacationing at an all-inclusive resort is very appealing for many travelers — and with good reason.

Being able to budget before you arrive and not having to worry about toting around cash or credit cards can alleviate a lot of travel headaches.

As a travel writer, I've been to dozens of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, the Maldives, and more. During my stays, I see guests overlook many details that could make their sojourns much more enjoyable.

Whether you're planning your first trip to an all-inclusive resort or this is already your preferred style of vacation, here are 10 mistakes to avoid:

Not researching before booking

Not every all-inclusive resort is designed equally. Some have gorgeous pools and underwhelming beaches, or vice-versa.

Some cater to families with dedicated kids' and teens' clubs and activities, but others prohibit guests under 18. I've stayed at resorts that run the gamut.

The point is that having everything included in and of itself isn't necessarily enough of an appeal. Think about what you're looking for in a vacation, do your research, and look beyond the slick marketing and touched-up, wide-angle pics on the resort's website.

Overlooking VIP and concierge-level room options

The term "all-inclusive" doesn't mean what it used to.

These days, some resorts offer upgraded rooms and suites in certain areas of the property, with perks that may include butler service and dedicated lounges, restaurants, pools, or beach areas for these VIP guests.

Although spending more for these amenities isn't for everyone, they can bring a sense of luxury and civility to your vacation, especially if you're staying at a crowded resort where guests are forced to set out towels before breakfast to claim lounge chairs.

Not making dinner reservations when you check in

You may have access to a slew of restaurants at your resort, but that doesn't mean you can roll up to the host stand and automatically get a table, especially at peak dinner times (remember, everyone wants 7:30 p.m.).

To avoid disappointment, book tables for the popular spots right after you check in or before you arrive, if that's an option.

Keep in mind that depending on how many nights you're staying, you may be entitled to only a limited number of reservations for the à-la-carte concepts, so choose wisely.

My advice is to prioritize places that serve local cuisine. After all, you can get steak or pasta just about anywhere.

Filling your plate at the buffet before checking out all the options

All-inclusive resorts are often known for over-the-top buffets any time of day, with omelet and freshly-pressed-juice stations at breakfast and salad bars, local specialties, carving stations, and all the desserts at lunch and dinner.

Related stories

Grabbing a plate and reaching for the serving spoons before giving the area a look-see is a rookie move and can also lead to overeating and wasting food.

Each time before tackling a buffet, take a walk around, as options can change not only from meal to meal but daily as well. And make it a point to take a spoonful of something you've never tried.

Forgetting to bring an insulated travel mug

I used to roll my eyes at resort guests who'd tote their travel mugs up to the bar to be filled with their beverage of choice.

I thought they were being overly indulgent and exploiting the concept of "all-inclusive." But now I think they're on to something.

For one thing, insulated tumblers keep drinks colder for much longer and reduce the number of trips to the bar.

Beyond that, they're more environmentally friendly than all those single-use plastic cups. If you're bringing your Stanley and asking the bartender to fill it, though, tip them for going above and beyond.

Not tipping

Speaking of tipping, I'm well aware that some all-inclusive resorts invite guests to "leave their wallets at home."

But unless the property you're staying at has a strict policy against it, small tips can go a long way. Tipping the bartender at a crowded swim-up or lobby bar when you first order, for example, can result in quicker service for your second and third rounds.

If you have a fabulous server at dinner, leaving them some cash on the table is a nice gesture. And don't forget about the housekeeping staff, who keep your room free of sand and endlessly replenish your towels.

Ordering drinks wrong

Not all drinks at all-inclusive resorts are created equally.

Belly up to the lobby bar, which tends to stock top-shelf liqueur. Upgrade your piña colada by requesting it with dark or aged rum instead of white, which gives it much more flavor.

If you see Aperol or Campari on the back bar, you can be sure to get a decent spritz. Craft your own low-ABV libation by asking for sauvignon blanc or rosé mixed with club soda and a dash of simple syrup, garnished with a lemon wedge.

And try the local beer or wine, if it's available.

… and going all in on fruity, frozen drinks

A piña colada is decidedly delicious — I like to have one mid-morning, which I half-jokingly refer to as a "breakfast smoothie."

But if you keep hitting the swim-up bar to order blended concoctions, you're going to end up drinking a zillion calories and probably getting a stomachache or killer hangover to boot.

If you're on a quest to keep the buzz going, maybe mix things up a bit with a spirit mixed with soda water or a wine spritzer. And don't forget to hydrate with actual water to counter the effects of all that heat and sunshine.

Not taking advantage of the amenities at sister properties

Some resorts are part of sprawling complexes with several adjacent properties owned and operated by the same parent company.

If your stay includes reciprocity (such as a "stay at one, play at three" policy), you'll have access to other facilities, including additional pools, fitness centers, beach areas, and restaurants.

Making use of them is a great way to avoid boredom and make it seem as if your vacation includes stays at multiple hotels.

Not using the non-motorized water sports

Although Jet Ski, hoverboard, and parasailing rentals can be pricey, using simpler things such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, floats, and even Hobie-Cats are often included in the price of an all-inclusive stay.

Yet I often see them lined up on the beach all day, barely being used.

Sign the waiver, don a life jacket, and give them a try. And if you happen to be staying at a place where these water sports are popular, add your name to the waiting list first thing in the morning.
