Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake is a high-altitude lake, situated at a formidable 17,000 ft, which makes it one of the highest lakes in the world. The region, believed to be blessed by Guru Padmasambhava, houses a temple of the Guru beside the lake, filling the air with spirituality. 

The folklore is further promoted as the lake completely freezes during the winters except for one spot, which is believed to be blessed. 

The lake is exotic also because the Chinese-Tibetan border is just a few kilometres from it. Tourists may also require Inner Line Permit, issued by local tour operators, to visit this region of North Sikkim as it is a sensitive zone.

Location: The lake is located at a distance of 190 km from Gangtok and at a distance of 5 km from Tibetan (Chinese) border.

Timings: Open 24 hours but you require an Inner Line Permit to visit the lake.

The key water source for River Teesta, the Zemu Glacier is a 26 km long glacier draining the eastern side of the mighty Kanchenjunga. It is the largest glacier on the Eastern Himalayas, contributing to the hydropower generated by the popular Teesta River. 

Icefalls and waterfalls are a frequent sight at the junction of tributary glaciers formed with Zemu Glacier.

Chopta Valley

Situated at an altitude of 13200 feet, the Chopta Valley is every thrill seeker’s litmus test during the winters. The trek to Chopta is covered in snow during the winters, increasing the difficulty for trekkers, but in the end, it is all worth it!

The first phase of the trek to Goecha La will take you from Yuksom to Sachen. Yuksom is situated at an altitude of 5,700 feet and Sachen is situated at an elevation of 7, 200 feet. From Sachen you will need to climb ahead to Tshoka which is at an altitude of 9,650 feet.This trek is quite enjoyable in the initial phase but becomes tryingly steep towards the later phase. On reaching Bakhim, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Yuksom valley. As you trek on ahead, you pass through Dzongri and Phedang. Gangtok North Sikkim Tour

Seated conveniently in the lap of Mother Nature, Sikkim is one of the scenic places to explore in North East-India. This small state has so much to offer to the visitors right from nature to adventure, spiritualism to cultural and most importantly peace of mind to warm hearted people. Sikkim is one of those places that makes all the wishes of an avid traveller come true. In our 5N/6D tour, we offer the chance to explore the lesser explored part of Sikkim i.e., North Sikkim along with the famed capital city of Gangtok. This tour guarantees to take you on a ride of a fairytale land in every possible way.

Gangtok is the destination where tour commences. Blessed with beautiful landscape, majestic monasteries, rich culture and warm-hearted people, the capital city of Sikkim caters to all kinds of travellers and their different interests. We shall aim to explore the suburb located Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and the Nathu Pass (if at all any spare time is left). Situated at an elevation of about 3753m, Tsomgo Lake is known for seasonal change in the colour of its water. For this reason, the local people consider the lake as sacred. Tsomgo is also to home several species of birds including Brahminy Ducks and wild animals like Red Panda.

The 6 hours drive through winding roads and scenic terrains will take us to Lachen, which is known for its unexploited beauty. At 2590m, Lachen is the starting point for some of the most interesting treks in North Sikkim and is the gateway to the alpine Guru Dongmar and Tso Lhamu lakes. Lachen was once served as the winter home of the shepherds who spent their summers on the alpine pastures bordering Tibet with their yaks. Lachen is now a popular base camp for trekking in North Sikkim. On our tour, we shall be witnessing the majestic Gurudongmar Lake, which is the highest lake in Sikkim and is situated at an altitude of 5181m. The crystal clear lake is surrounded by snow-clad mountains,fluttering Buddhist Prayers Flags and a temple in that adds more to the spiritual feel of the place. Gurudongmar remains frozen throughout the winter but in summers, visitors can enjoy looking at its sparkling water.

Lachung is a scenic mountain village that boasts of its lofty snow-capped mountain peaks, scenic waterfalls, sparkling brooks and apple and apricot orchards. There is also a handicraft centre at Lachung that offers a glimpse of skills of people of Sikkim. Our main place of visit would in Lachung would be the Yumthang Valley, which is a grazing pasture surrounded by the mountains. Yumthang is also known as Valley of Flowers is situated at an altitude of 3,564 metres. The valley is a home to the famed Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary that has over twenty-four species of the Rhododendron flowers. Adding to the beauty is a tributary of River Teesta that flows through the valley and the town of Lachung. Yumthang is an ideal place for spending a blissful time amidst nature, it also gives one the opportunity to reconnect with Mother Nature and see its bounty. We shall also visit the hot water spring that is believed to have medicinal properties. On our way back from Lachung, we shall stop by to watch the beauty of Bheema and Twin Waterfalls.

On arrival at NJP Railway Station / IXB Airport, our representative will be there to meet and greet you and transfer you to Gangtok (5,480 ft.). On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Rest of the day is free for leisure. An overnight stay at the hotel in Gangtok.

Excursion to Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

After breakfast in the morning, we will start an excursion to Tsomgo Lake (12,400 ft.) and Baba Mandir (13,200 ft.), which are about 55 km one way from Gangtok city. After exploring the lake and the temple, return back to your hotel in Gangtok for an overnight stay.

Gangtok – Lachen (118 Kms/6 hrs)

In the morning, we will drive to Lachen (9,400 ft, 118 km). On the way, we will visit Seven Sister Waterfalls. Later, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant on the way. Check in at the hotel in the late afternoon. Rest of the day is free to relax followed by an overnight stay at the hotel in Lachen.

Lachen – Gurudongmar Lake (40 kms each side) – Lachung (44 kms/2 hrs)

Today in the morning, we will drive towards Gurudongmar Lake (17,000ft). Only Indians are allowed to visit this lake.

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest situated lakes in North Sikkim. Note that the altitude here may cause breathing problem so be conscious.

After exploring the lake return back to the hotel and leave for Lachung. Enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel in Lachung.

Lachung – Yumthang Valley Excursion (21 kms each side) – Gangtok (118 kms/6 hrs)

After breakfast in the morning, we will proceed to Yumthang Valley which is also known as the Valley of Flowers (11800 Ft / 3598 Mts / 25 Kms / 1 ½ hours one way). On the way back, we will visit the hot spring which is considered to have medicinal properties. Later return back to the hotel & leave for Gangtok. An overnight stay at the hotel in Gangtok.

In the morning after breakfast, check out from the hotel on time and get transfer to the NJP Railway station / IXB Airport for your onward journey.

The area and geography:.

Before getting into the North Sikkim tour package let us get a brief idea about North Sikkim. District wise North Sikkim is by far the largest area within the Indian state of Sikkim, yet the least travelled. In fact it comprises a whooping ~ 60% of the entire state of Sikkim. However with some travel restrictions, it remained a complicated and a mystery to both travellers and tourists till recent. North and eastern part of north Sikkim form the international border with Tibet/China.

We will literally follow Teesta River to its origin, tracing its two northerly tributaries, Lachung and Lachen (in Nepalese a river is called “Chu”, e.g. Lachung Chu). From their confluence at Chungthang we will visit Lachung valley and to its head at Yumthang and Zero point. Similarly through Lachen valley to its head at Gurudongmar lake.

What is there in North Sikkim tour?

Quite naturally this large area has many places to visit and explore. North Sikkim has fantastic potential as a tourist destination, albeit in a sustainable way. There are dense evergreen alpine forests, rhododendrons and magnolias, wide or hidden valleys, rivers and waterfalls, high snow mountains and lakes. Additionally the northern territories of North Sikkim District fairly resembles to that of Tibetan plateau  be it by looks or in its people. Its easy to divide it in three parts.

Gangtok and around:

In the beginning we will spend couple of nights in Gangtok, while visiting some sightseeing to Rumtek monastery and Tashi view point. Also this helps in the acclimatisation for high altitude tour awaiting us.

Lachung, Yumthang valley, Katao:

In our trip one major attraction is Lachung town, which is fairly large and nestled in a wide valley. Multiple streams unite in this valley for form Lachung river. There are ample option for stay here ranging from budget lodges to premium cottages.

Lachen, Thangu valley, Gurudongmar lake

On contrary to Lachung, Lachen is very small town inside a narrow valley with one short stretch of main street/shops. However the valley widens at Thangu, an opportunity for locals for Yak grazing. From here on the terrain will be similar to that of Tibet and Ladakh, a dry and arid high altitude plateau. Surroundings are breathtaking with several snow capped mountains and peaks.

As they say “a picture is worth a thousand words”, here we try a visual representation of our North Sikkim tour.

Additionally hiking options inside north Sikkim are very limited and burdened with several permit requirements and associated charges. On top of that, heavy logistical expenses translates trekking an indeed expensive affair in North Sikkim.

So it is compelling enough to plan a car sightseeing tour in this region. In our opinion it is  a must for tourists and hikers alike, who wish to explore offbeat and unseen north Sikkim.

North Sikkim tour Highlights:

Airport: Bagdogra International Airport (IXB); Note: Newly opened airport at Pakyong (Code: PYG) near Gangtok remains often closed due to weather conditions.

Seasons/Best time to visit: March to May (Spring/Summer) and Oct to Dec (Autumn/Winter),

Any Prerequisite? This tour reaches really high altitude. People with lung/heart/breathing/asthma problem must consult with doctor prior to the trip. Prior high altitude tour is a plus.

Highest Point: Gurudongmar Lake ~ 5180 m/17100 ft; Yumthang Zero Point ~ 4650 m/15250 ft.

North Sikkim tour itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri railway station by noon. Drive to capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok (~ 1650 m/5400 ft), 130 Km and may take 5 hours.. Initial drive is through the lovely Himalayan foothills  and then following Teesta river, upstream on lower hills. Check in to hotel/homestay.

Day 2: Today we will spend around the city, sightseeing by car, including one or two monasteries. Evening around mall road. This will also help you to acclimatise for the tour ahead. Hotel/lodge/homestay.

Day 3:  After breakfast we drive to Lachung, 120 Km. On our way we will visit Kabi Longstok and Seven Sister Waterfalls. Have your lunch at Mangan, small district town of North Sikkim, about 65 Km from Gangtok. Lodge/hotel/homestay accommodation at Lachung.

Day 4:  Explore Lachung and around. After breakfast visit Katao valley and return to Lachung for lunch. 50 Km round trip. In the afternoon explore Lachung or just relax around Lodge/hotel/homestay.

Day 5: After breakfast drive to Yumthang Valley and further to Zero Point, back to Lachung for lunch. Around 100 Km drive. After lunch drive to Lachen, 50 Km away. Lodge/hotel/homestay.

Day 6: Start very early in morning (by 3 am) to Gurudongmar Lake at ~ 5180 m/17100 ft, 60 Km further up. Stop at Thangu for a quick tea break. Explore the lake in the morning. Drive back to Lachen for lunch. In the afternoon drive to Gangtok, 120 Km, 4 to 5 hours. Check in to hotel/homestay.

Day 7:  Today after breakfast we drive back to Bagdogra or NJP in 5 hours. Trip ends here.

Important note:

• You need to reach on your own to Bagdogra or NJP latest by noon on Day 1 . Return to Bagdogra NJP by noon or early afternoon on Day 7.
• It is possible to add or modify the itinerary to explore places like Dzongu valley.
• Withdraw any required cash from Gangtok. Number of ATM in north Sikkim is less and maybe cashless when you need.

Best time to visit North Sikkim:

There are two seasons to visit North Sikkim like the rest of Sikkim.

• Spring/Summer: March to May  – You will get lot of residual snow at or above 15000 ft during spring and even till the beginning of summer. Weather turns misty from April and bloom with Rhododendrons and other flowers which is a speciality of Sikkim
• Autumn and winters October to December  – After monsoon weather becomes clear and produces great views of valleys and high mountains. During November you will witness the leaves changing hues with fall colours.

Monsoon is heavy and spans long. Avoid travelling from  the month of June to September.

Expected temperature and suggested clothing:

Due to its high altitude nature you will feel cold weather conditions. It is important to carry proper warm clothing during your tour.

Spring & Summer (March to May): Earlier this season, colder will be the temperatures. Although in March and April you will get cold conditions, especially at Yumthang and Gurudongmar lake. Morning temperatures can be well below freezing (0°C). Temperatures may plummet to -10°C depending on weather conditions.

Autumn & Winters (October to December): Later this season, colder will be the temperatures.Usually the session beginning after monsoon is on an average colder than spring and summer. Clear weather conditions and onset of winter make things chilly. Expect -10°C to -20°C feels like temperature in the winters, especially if its windy.

Three layers of clothing that we recommended in these type of high altitude tours, evermore when you are outside the car.

• A quick dry base layer (Dry-fit t-shirt).
• A warm jacket (Double layer or Fleece jacket ) as middle layer.
• A windproof cum waterproof with hood as the outer layer.

North Sikkim permit requirements and documents needed:

Sikkim, and especially North Sikkim has stringent tourist entry requirements and associated permits. This implies for both Indian and foreigners.

Foremost, you can only visit to North Sikkim with a registered tour operator, who is listed in Sikkim. That said, as a tourist you have to book a package tour. No worries, there are many companies offering so.

Always carry a a valid photo identity proof with address on it, e.g. original Voter ID, Aadhar, Driving licence and photocopies. Also carry at least 4 copies of recent passport size of you.

Foreigners are not allowed to visit Gurudongmar but till Thangu. Check here the details of various permits required in Sikkim for Indians and foreign nationals .

Note: It is possible to drive your own car to North Sikkim, with prior permits.

  TOUR FEE: ₹ 29,950 per person (Bagdogra to Bagdogra) + 5% GST  

The above Tour Fee is applicable for a group of 4 to 5 persons, considering one vehicle (Toyota Innova) for the group.

Inclusions:

All accommodations, i.e. total 6 nights on standard twin occupancy, in hotel, lodge or homestay depending upon availability.

All meals during the tour, starting from Day 1 lunch to Day 7 breakfast, as per itinerary. . Regular Indian style nutritious vegetarian food during the tour (Non veg option includes eggs or chicken), including breakfast packed/hot lunch (depending upon the time you reach a place), light evening refreshments and dinner.

A car like Innova/similar along with you, covering the itinerary.

North Sikkim permits.

Travel insurance cum   Medical Insurance Policy covering high altitude tours (For Indian nationals it is included in the TOUR FEE, up to 60 years of age). It is for a duration of 7 days.

Exclusions:

Any entry fee to monastery, monument or any particular point.

Sightseeing to Katao and Zero Point. Usually the driver takes you to these places if they are open on that day and charge is approximately ₹ 4000 per point. You pay directly to the driver.

Anything which is NOT mentioned in the “Inclusions” or personal in nature.

• We assume that you have read and understood our “Terms & Conditions” ( https://himalayatrekker.com/terms-and-conditions ) before Booking a trek/tour.
• To reserve your place in a scheduled Fixed Departure trek or a Customised/Private trek  pay 25% of the TREK/TOUR FEE  as the initial  “Booking Deposit” . You can pay by Net banking/Draft/Cheque/Credit/Debit/AMEX cards. This will ensure your participation in the desired trek and we will reserve your place in the scheduled date. You need to pay the remaining amount at least  15 days before Trek Starting Date .
• If you book a Trek/Tour before 14 days or less from Trek/Tour Starting Date, you need to pay the full TREK/TOUR FEE .

  Cancellations:

• “Booking Amount” i.e. 25% of the TREK/TOUR FEE is Non-Refundable  at any stage.
• If in case you are not able to make it due to unavoidable reason(s), we provide you a  very flexible choice of Shifting to another trek within next one year . One year is counted from the starting date of the trek/tour you booked initially with us.
• In case you postpone your trip you need to inform minimum of 15 days before  the trek/tour starting date. (Though we suggest to inform us earlier if known)
• In case you postpone a trek/tour before 15 days of the scheduled Trek/Tour Starting date or prior , you may shift to another group of the same trek/tour scheduled in the same season or within next one year. You may shift to another suitable route also. For changing any, you need our approval first. Your request must be in written communication through your registered email with us.
• If you cancel/postpone a trek/tour from 14 days to 8 days before tour starting date , your Booking Amount is Non-Refundable. We will not take any request of shifting dates. We will charge 50% of the amount as Cancellation Charges and process refund of remaining 50%. You may also shift to another group within next year but 25% Booking Amount will be deemed as Cancellation Charge and the rest amount will be transferred to the shifted group.
• If you cancel a trek/tour  7 days (i.e. a week) before Trek/Tour Starting Date or later , there will be NO REFUND.
• In case of any unforeseen incident including but not limited to natural calamities like flood, earthquake, landslide, forest fire or any political unrest, if we are compelled to cancel the trek/trip, you will be entitled to redeem the full amount for the same/similar kind of trek/trip within next one year.

I recently book a trip in October with NatureWings after reading a lot of positive feedback especially their expertise in East Sikkim. Our plan was for 7N/8D covering North and East Sikkim. Through out my journey in North, every day i used to get calls from them inquiring about the travel comfort, stay etc. I was really surprised by that, but the joy did not last much once we started the East Sikkim trip. From handling of Permits,coordinating with driver, calling his friend to pass on all my details via whats app to get the permit on time was a real pain. This happened in-spite me providing all details on whats app and email at least 10 days prior to travel. On top of that when we reached Zuluk, the home stay guy said there was no communication given to them via phone or email about my stay. Luckily for us another family could not make it and we were allotted their room. Otherwise i would have to look for another place. Overall there were a bit of hick ups covering East as there was no coordinator like we had in South. For the price we are paying i would expect a much better service. We just returned from a West Sikkim Tour and the trip was a memorable one. It was our 4 Night 5 Days trip, covering Pelling in 2 Nights and Ravangla in 2 nights. In Pelling, we stayed in Crassula Ovata retreat in the Upper Pelling helipad area. The hotel is a new one with a mesmerizing view of Mount Kanchanjhungha from my bed. The location and ambiance of the hotel are too good, and we enjoyed every bit of the moments we stayed there. Honestly, we were in no mood to go out sightseeing as the hotel gives us the perfect ambiance of peacefulness and tranquillity. In Ravangla also, we got a beautiful hotel, Barfung Retreat. This beautiful resort with a good room and a breathtaking view of snow peaks from our room. In both the hotels, the food was also good, and our driver from Bagdogra to Bagdogra was helpful and jovial. We must thank NatureWings for offering us such a memorable trip and will go through them once again in the North East India tour.

We Traveled to Pelling, Ravangla and Kaluk during this year's puja vacation. Best place to have a great view of the peaks of the Kanchanjangha range of Himalayas. Just get up around 5:00 am in October and could see the golden snow-capped mountain peaks from the rising sun (because of fewer clouds, and the possibility of getting a clear view of snow-clad peaks). Peaceful Pelling is famous for its sightseeing points like Shingshore Bridge, Sky-Walk and Monastery. We stayed in Hotel Sikkim Aurora, close to the Helipad, and on the top of the town. Most of the rooms are mountain facing, can see the peaks from the bed as well as bathrooms. Just relax and enjoy the show. I strongly recommend a visit over this place for a couple of days (minimum). Overall the hotels, cars and foods arrangement made by NatureWings was satisfactory and within budget.

Our 3 Days North Sikkim tour starts from Gangtok to Lachen. Lachen is 107 km away, approx 4 hours 30 mins drive and is located at an elevation of 2,750 ft so without doubt the beauty of this place will capture your heart. On reaching Lachen you can check-in to the hotel for an overnight stay. As per your interest you can go out to explore the place and enjoy the local culture and cuisines. 

Next days early morning after breakfast we will drive to Gurudongmar Lake and then to Lachung. The drive to Gurudongmar Lake will be via Chopta valley and Thangu. Gurudongmar Lake is situated at 17,200 ft and holds religious significance. Encircled by snow-capped mountains and crystal clear water, the splendid scenic beauty of this place will forever be imprinted in your memories. After the sightseeing we will head towards Lachung. Lachung is located at an altitude of 8,610 ft  and the  beauty of this place is mesmerizing. 

On the last day after an early breakfast we will head towards Yumthang valley which is around 25 kms away from Lachung. Yumthang valley is also known as The Valley of Flowers it's because of different species of flowers found in Yumthang Valley. After the visit we will return to our hotel and then back to Gangtok.

Q: We’re a couple, do we need to share a room? A: You can opt for double sharing then you will get a private room on double sharing only. No Sharing with any other traveler.

Q: I’m traveling Solo, how will I be accommodated? A: For solo travelers separate rooms will be provided at the extra cost of INR 400/- per night.

Q: What would be the mode of transportation? A: Vehicle will be 10 occupancy Non-AC Bolero/Max/Sumo on sharing basis.

Q: Zero point is covered in this package? A: No, Zero Point is not covered and it's totally optional. If all travelers wish to visit then the driver will take you in additional cost usually INR 3500/- per vehicle which is directly payable to the driver.

Q: What Identity proofs are valid for traveling in Sikkim? A: You can present a Voter card or driving license or passport to get a permit.

Aadhaar Card is not valid in Sikkim.

Q: Is Sikkim safe for solo traveling? A: Yes, Sikkim is one of the safest places to visit for Solo travelers. However, traveling solo could cost a little high due to less bus connectivity and for some of the places, no sharing taxis are available. It is always a better idea to travel in a group to reduce the cost of traveling and accommodation.

• This Package is only for Indian travelers.
• Cost of this package is dynamic (can increase upto 50%) which totally depends on the organizer/supplier and the tourist season. The final price will be confirmed 1 day prior to departure.
• Vehicle will be 10 occupancy Non-AC Bolero/Max/Sumo on sharing basis.
• Accommodation will be on a sharing basis. For solo travelers separate rooms will be provided at the extra cost of INR 400/- per night.
• All the rooms are of budget category with basic amenity.
• Any cost arising due to political unrest and natural calamities like landslides, road blockage, etc will be borne by the traveler.
• Any increase in taxes or fuel price, leading to increase in cost on surface transportation & land arrangements, which may come into effect prior to departure.
• Additional sightseeing or extra usage of vehicles, other than mentioned in the itinerary or Optional Tours will be charged separately by the driver.
• Guests traveling in a group should travel with minimum baggage only. Kindly do not exceed baggage allowance of 15 kgs per person. If a guest traveling in a group has exceeded the baggage policy then they need to hire an additional vehicle if in case the cab driver refuses for extra luggage. The charges for additional vehicles need to be paid by customers locally. The restriction of baggage policy is due to the hilly area and safety of the passengers.

The tour package was well-organized and covered all the major destinations in the region, giving us a comprehensive overview of the culture, history, and natural beauty of this lesser-explored part of India. The tour started in Guwahati, the gateway to North East India, where we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. From there, we traveled to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, known as the 'Scotland of the East' for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. We visited the famous Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, and were mesmerized by its crystal clear water and surrounding hills. Next, we headed to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth, where we got to witness the spectacular Seven Sisters Waterfall and the living root bridges, a unique and fascinating man-made wonder. The tour also took us to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and we were amazed by its pristine surroundings and the warm hospitality of the locals. We then continued our journey to Kaziranga National Park, home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. We were lucky enough to spot these magnificent creatures during our safari in the park. The tour also included a visit to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, where we got to experience the unique Assamese culture and enjoy a traditional dance performance. The highlight of the tour was our visit to Tawang, located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. The monastery was a sight to behold, and we were fortunate to witness the daily rituals and prayers of the monks. The tour also took us to the picturesque Sela Pass, which offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. Throughout the tour, we were impressed by the beauty and diversity of North East India. The accommodations provided were comfortable and the food was delicious, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and shared interesting insights about the places we visited. Die Hotels waren wie versprochen, einfache aber gute. Nur eines war dem Schlechtwetter nicht gewachsen und definitiv zu kalt. Für die Blooming Season im Yumthang waren wir um ca. drei Wochen zu früh. Es gab aber spannende Einblicke in Religion und Kultur. Ich würde die Reise wieder machen, nur ein wenig später.

It was nice stay in Rong Lyang homestay in Chakung. The host Rajen and Iras were very nice and helpful. The owner of the homestay had take us to small trek in the early morning where we have seen mesmerizing sunrise and Mt. Kanchenjunga and the view was very beautiful. We have also went to see the organic farming in the homestay. The room and food are very good.

Sikkim Entry Protocol

To promote tourism in Sikkim, constraints on the entry of tourists in the restricted areas have been considerably relaxed; however visitors should follow the underlying necessary guidelines to have a hassle-free experience while visiting this picturesque state of India. Indian Nationals intending to visit Sikkim do not require any special permit while visiting some of the unrestricted areas like Gangtok, Yuksom, Rumtek, Pemayangtse, Phodong etc, but visiting certain areas of North Sikkim like Yumthang Valley, Chungthang, Lachung, Yumesamdong, Lachen, Thangu, Chopta and Gurudongmar Lake, it is mandatory even for Indian nationals also to obtain a permit.

Foreign Nationals intending to visit Sikkim can obtain a permit for an initial period of 15 days which is extendable up to 30 days. The permits can be arranged very easily at several places such as Siliguri, Darjeeling, Rongpo and Malli. These permits can also be obtained from Indian Embassy at different places. Foreign tourists have to travel in groups of two or more to visit restricted and protected areas of Sikkim like Yumthang Valley, as they are not allowed to club and go with Indian tourists.

There are however further restrictions on visiting several places deeper inside Sikkim. Both domestic and foreign visitors require special permits to visit Tsongo and Nathula area which is a day tour from Gangtok. Foreigners can only visit Tsongo and not Nathula.

Restricted Area Permit and Protected Area Permit Regime

Sikkim has certain entry restrictions and is under a restricted area regime due to its proximity with neighbouring countries like China. This State is divided into 3 areas based on travel restrictions. Some parts require Protected Area Permit (PAP) while some require Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Therefore all foreign nationals require Restricted Area Permit to visit any part of Sikkim. Earlier this permit was known as Inner Line Permit (ILP). Indians however do not require this but there are other restrictions for all including Indians for few specific places in Sikkim. There are certain areas like Tsomgo Lake, Dzongri etc which are defined as Protected Areas and have special army deployment. Both foreigners and Indians require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit such places. But few protected border areas like Nathulla are not accessible to foreigners at all, while Indians can still visit with the Protected Area Permit.

Restricted Area Permits (RAP) This permit is mandatory only for foreigners who wish to enter Sikkim. It is free of cost. All that is required is a valid Passport along with an Indian visa. With proper documentation, it takes less than 30 minutes to get the permit. Protected Area Permits (PAP) This permit is applicable for both foreigners and Indians intending to visit protected areas. Solo foreigners are not permitted in such areas. Additionally foreign tourists wanting to go trekking in the interiors of Sikkim should apply for the PAP through tour operators who are registered with Sikkim Tourism Department and the trekking programme should be arranged by them. Photo ID proof like passport, voter's ID card or a driving license would be the required documentation.
