Visa for Belgium

A. Where to apply?   B. What type of visa do I need?   C. Apply for a visa

A. Where to apply?

Visa applications should be lodged from your country of residence. You should not apply from Canada unless you are a temporary or a permanent resident in Canada or you hold a travel document issued by Canada (for instance if you are a protected person).  Applications by non-residents can only be accepted in duly justified cases of force majeure .

In Canada, your contact point is the Consulate General of Belgium in Montreal.

The Consulate General is the exclusive provider of visa services in Canada for:

  • Short stay visas for Belgium
  • Long stay visas for Belgium

Therefore, no queries related to visas should be sent to the Embassy of Belgium in Ottawa or to Belgian Honorary Consulates.

  B. What type of visa do I need?

1. Airport transit   2. Short stay (< 90 days)   3. Long stay (> 90 days)

  1. Airport Transit

An Airport Transit Visa (ATV = type A Visa) is a visa valid for transiting through the international transit areas of one or more airports of the Schengen Member States, including Brussels-National Airport (Zaventem). This visa does not enable an entry into the Schengen area.

Do I need an Airport Transit Visa?

The following categories of travelers benefit from an exemption and do not need an Airport Transit Visa:

  • Canadian citizens;
  • Permanent residents of Canada traveling with a valid Permanent resident card;
  • Travelers with a valid visa for Canada, who are traveling to or returning from Canada;
  • Holders of a diplomatic passport;
  • Family members of an EU citizen.

If you have to leave the international airport transit zone (changing terminal or leaving the airport) or if you are transiting through more than 1 airport in the Schengen area, you must apply for a Schengen visa.

For further information on transits in Belgium, please check this page .

  2. Short Stay (< 90 days)

Any stay of maximum 90 days in Belgium is considered a "Short stay".

If you wish to stay in Belgium for up to 90 days in any 180 days period, you may have to apply for a Schengen visa (Short stay visa or C visa), depending on your nationality.

Do I need a Short stay visa?

  • Nationals subject to a short stay visa : list of third countries
  • Canadian citizens : Canadians are exempt from Schengen visa. Travel is authorised for up to 90 days over 180 days in the Schengen area without a visa.
  • Refugees or undetermined nationality : bearers of a travel document for Refugees or a Certificate of identity issued by Canada are subject to a short stay visa if they wish to travel to Belgium.
  • Diplomatic and service passports : exceptions and special categories

Determine the duration of your stay

If you have recently traveled to the Schengen area, please mind the above-mentioned rule of 90/180 days: the Schengen Calculator will help you prepare your next trips or visa application.

  3. Long Stay (> 90 days)

Any stay of more than 90 days in Belgium is considered a "Long stay".

Application procedures vary depending on the category of the visa. Go to the "Long stay visa" page. Determine your category. Then prepare your application file with the necessary supporting documents.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Traveling Through Europe : Belgium is a party to the Schengen Agreement. If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay. If you plan on transiting or visiting a Schengen country review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
  • You will need sufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket .

Visit the  Embassy of Belgium  website for the most current visa information.

The Government of Belgium does not recognize the 12-page U.S. emergency passport, issued by U.S. embassies and consulates overseas, as a valid travel document for visa-free entry into Belgium. If traveling on this emergency passport, you may be refused boarding and/or entry by immigration officials. Only direct transit through Belgium for a destination in the United States is permitted with an emergency passport. You should check entry requirements of any other country of destination to make sure the emergency passport is accepted for entry.

HIV/AIDS RESTRICITONS:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Belgium.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction , and customs regulations on our website.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad, including possible attacks in Europe. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, rudimentary IEDs, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, concerts, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Parks/festivals
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and airports/scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

  • Low-level street crime including robberies, smash and grab car robberies, purse snatchings, stealing electronics, and pickpocketing is common, particularly in major cities, in public areas such as restaurants, the Brussels metro at night, buses/trams, and all train stations. Thieves often operate in teams, by bumping into or shoving the target, especially in crowds. Be alert to distractions.
  • Theft from vehicles is common. Always drive with your windows up and the doors locked, as thieves sometimes target cars stopped at traffic lights. Thieves may smash the window and grab valuables. Use parking garages when possible, and if you must use street parking, look for a spot near a street light. Do not leave anything visible on the seats, floor, or dashboard.
  • Theft of bags on trains has increased, particularly the Brussels-Amsterdam route. Thieves often target light bags placed overhead. Keep bags with cash, valuables, and travel documents close to you, rather than in the overhead shelf on trains.
  • Carry only a minimal amount of cash, credit cards, and necessary personal identification.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and watches.

Demonstrations   occur frequently . They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events. Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.

  • Police routinely monitor protestors and demonstrations.
  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent. Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • Monitor the  Embassy website for demonstration alerts.

International Financial Scams: U.S. citizens have lost tens of thousands of dollars in scams in Belgium. See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for more information.

  • Common internet scams include confidence schemes, in which friends, family, or others receive a message that a U.S. citizen traveler is stranded in Belgium and in need of funds to pay for customs fees.
  • U.S. citizens in the United States who have been victimized by Internet crime should report it to the  Internet Crime Complaint Center .
  • Check ATMs or other machines for skimmers or removeable readers. When possible utilize bank ATMs. In bars and restaurants, have the card swiped in front of you and do not let it be taken away.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 101 . For all other emergencies, please dial  112 . Contact the U.S. Embassy at  +(32) (2) 811-4000 . Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

The Belgian Commission for Financial Assistance to Victims of Intentional Acts of Violence  provides financial compensation, under specific circumstances, for victims of crime and for those who have suffered injuries and consequent losses caused by such incidents. The Commission also provides for dependents or immediate family members of homicide victims. For more information, contact the Commission by phone at  32-2-542-7208; 32-2-542-7218; 32-2-542-7224; 32-2-542-7229, or 32-2-542-7244;  by e-mail at  [email protected]  or  [email protected] ; or visit the  Ministry of Justice website  (French and Dutch only).

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: While in Belgium, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different than in the United States.

  • Belgian law requires that any  new  building with public or community space must be accessible for persons with disabilities.
  • Many existing buildings as well as public transportation systems are less adapted to individuals with disabilities.
  • General information on the accessibility of tourist accommodations, public transportation, museums, and other tourist facilities can be found on official tourism sites for Belgium’s three major regions:  Brussels ,  Wallonia , and  Flanders .

High-quality medical facilities and services are widely available in Belgium. The large university hospitals can handle most medical problems. Equivalents for most, but not all, U.S. medications are available through local pharmacies with a prescription from a Belgian physician. The responsiveness of emergency services is also generally excellent.

For emergency services in Belgium, dial 112.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on overseas insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Belgian Federal Public Health Service  to ensure the medication is legal in Belgium.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Belgium’s road network is generally well-built and maintained.
  • Adequate lighting exists on major highways, but on rural roads it is often insufficient or nonexistent.
  • Roadside assistance and information on road conditions are available in English from Touring Mobilis, telephone 02 286-3040. Belgian police will also provide information on road conditions, telephone 02-642-6666.
  • Emergency services are efficient and responsive. For police emergencies, dial 101 by phone within Belgium. For all other emergencies, dial 112.

Traffic Laws:

  • Traffic coming from the right generally has priority at uncontrolled intersections, even if coming from a smaller street.
  • The  maximum speed limit on Belgian highways  is 120 kilometers (72 miles) per hour but is not always posted.
  • The  maximum speed in urban areas  is 50 km (30 miles) per hour, but in central Brussels it is 30 km (19 miles) per hour.
  • While Belgian authorities strictly  enforce speed limits , many Belgians still drive significantly faster than the posted limit. Claiming ignorance of the speed limit may not prevent you from getting a significant fine for speeding, and your vehicle may be impounded if you can’t pay the fine on the spot. Automated radars with cameras are common and violators are issued citations through the mail.
  • Belgian police also conduct  breath analysis checks for alcohol use , particularly at night and during major holidays. The legal limit for operating a motor vehicle is .5 grams of alcohol per liter of blood (.05 percent Blood Alcohol Content).
  • You must use your seat belt  while driving in a vehicle.
  • Bicycling  is very common in Belgium, for both recreational and more traditional transportation purposes. Wear helmets at all times and follow vehicle travel rules (stopping at lights, crosswalks, etc.). Follow bike paths when available.

Public Transportation:  Brussels and most major cities of Belgium have extensive and efficient public transportation systems. Trains, buses, and ferries connect Brussels with other major cities in Belgium and with the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands. Traveling by train is considered to be safer than driving.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Visit the website of the  Belgian national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Belgium’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Belgium’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Brussels Airport Delays: Travelers have experienced significant delays at passport control at Brussels airport, during both arrival and departure.  We recommend outbound passengers check with your airline to find out their cutoff time for check-in and seek your airline’s recommendations on how to mitigate potential passport control delays.

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Belgium should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

Belgium attracts more than 7 million tourists each year. Many non-EU citizens, including Canadians, can enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

Canadian nationals will soon need a visa waiver to travel to Belgium . This will be an obligatory requirement along with a valid passport when crossing the border.

The ETIAS visa waiver is a travel authorisation that lets Canadian citizens enter Belgium without having to apply for a travel visa . ETIAS is not a visa for Belgium and is easy and quick to obtain online. ETIAS allows Canadian travellers to spend time in Belgium as well as the rest of the Schengen countries.

How can Canadians apply for ETIAS to visit Belgium?

The ETIAS for Canadians application process is straightforward and only takes a few minutes to complete. Applicants will need a valid Canadian passport, a credit or debit card to pay the application fee, and an email address to receive their ETIAS for Belgium travel authorisation .

They will also need to make sure to meet all the ETIAS requirements for Canadian citizens and comply with the visa waiver conditions.

The whole application can be completed online from anywhere in the world — there’s no need to go to a Belgian consulate in person. It’s essential that the applicant completes the ETIAS application form for Belgium as accurately as possible . Incomplete or incorrect information may result in the travel authorisation being delayed or even denied.

Travelling to Belgium from Canada with the ETIAS visa waiver

Once the Belgium ETIAS application has been approved, the traveller will be notified by email and the visa waiver will be linked to the passport electronically . Canadians need to use the passport that they applied with to travel to Belgium, it is not possible to transfer the visa waiver to a new passport.

The ETIAS visa waiver for Belgium is valid for the whole Schengen area . As long as the ETIAS holder enters the Schengen territory in Belgium, they can then visit as many Schengen countries as they like for a maximum stay of 90 days within a 180-day period.

Tourist information for Belgium

Home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO as well as delightful art cities, canals, and some of the finest chocolatiers in the world. Belgium fascinates international tourists with its distinctly European charm.

If you travel from Canada to Belgium, you must know that weather can be cold during the winter and is usually variable all year round. However, spring and early autumn are the best times to enjoy a holiday in the country.

Health information for Belgium

  • In case of a medical emergency, call 112 to contact the ambulance service
  • Belgian tap water is safe to drink
  • Make sure that all medication you bring from Canada is in its original package and is clearly labelled
  • Although most Belgians speak English, carry a Dutch or French phrasebook with you if you visit a pharmacy

Does a Canadian need a visa for Belgium?

Canadian citizens do not need a visa to visit Belgium for up to 3 months.

Canadian passport holders may spend up to 90 days anywhere in the Schengen Area for the purposes of tourism or business without applying for a visa. They may also transit through a Belgian airport visa-free, at least unitil ETIAS for Belgium it’s implemented .

From 2025, Canadians will need an ETIAS visa waiver to go to Belgium short term. The new travel authorization will be an essential entry requirement to visit Belgium from Canada.

Canadians do not need to apply for ETIAS before each trip to Belgium . The permit is valid for 3 years or until the passport expires and can be used to enter the Schengen Area multiple times.

When do Canadian citizens need a visa to visit Belgium?

Citizens of Canada need a visa to visit Belgium if they:

  • Will stay for more than 90 days per 180-day period
  • Are visiting for reasons other than tourism, business, or transit
  • Do not meet all the ETIAS eligibility requirements

Canadians who require a visa for Belgium should begin the application process well ahead of their trip. It takes longer to apply for a visa than ETIAS and several supporting documents may be required.

Visas for Belgium are obtained through the embassy or consulate in Canada.

Applying for a Schengen Visa from Canada

If you are a citizen of Canada, it is not necessary to apply for a visa if you’re planning on traveling to Belgium as long as your trip does not exceed 90 days. If you are going for longer than 90 days or you are a non-Canadian citizen, but you live in Canada, you need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in Belgium. You must be able to prove that you have a legal right to stay in Canada, otherwise, you need to apply for the visa from your home country.

Where to apply for a Belgium Schengen visa

If you are applying in Canada, there are 2 offices:

  • The Embassy of Belgium in Ottawa. This office’s jurisdiction is the whole of Canada
  • The Consulate General of Belgium in Montreal. This office’s jurisdiction is Canada, the Bermuda Islands and the territorial community of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

However, the Consulate General in Montreal is the exclusive provider of visa services in Canada .

You have to make sure you apply at the right Belgian embassy or consulate in Canada.

Here are 5 easy steps to follow to help you apply for your visa:

Step 1: Complete your application form

Without them, your visa application may well be rejected. It’s also a good idea to dress smartly to prove you are serious about wanting to obtain a visa.

When it’s your turn, the visa officer will review your application. They may wish to confirm the information you have provided or they may ask you questions in order to get all the facts from you to make a fair decision. Just smile and answer honestly.

Typical questions include:

  • What do you do in Canada?
  • Do you have any children?
  • Have you applied for a Schengen visa before ?
  • How many days are you traveling for?
  • What is the purpose of this trip?

Don’t jeopardize your Schengen visa interview at the last minute. Use this comprehensive and thorough visa interview guide to crack the visa interview!

You’ll also pay the fee for your visa. Payment can only be made by money order or bank draft, payable to the Consulate General of Belgium in Montreal. Personal cheques are not allowed, but you can also pay with cash, credit card or debit card at the counter.

You will also have to provide a scan of your fingerprints and have a photograph taken, especially if this is your first time applying for a Schengen visa. If you have previously provided these biometrics, it can be reused as long as your new application is within a 5 year period.

Step 5: Receive your visa

You can track the progress of your visa application in the following ways:

  • Contact the consulate
  • If your application has been referred to the Aliens Office for a decision, go to www.dofi.fgov.be You’ll need your reference number and the location of the consulate. You can also ring or email the call centre at the Aliens Office (+ 32 2 793 80 00 or ( [email protected] )

When a decision has been made, your passport will be returned to your home address by mail. You will need to provide a prepaid and self-addressed return Xpresspost envelope or FedEx, UPS, Purolator waybill.

The decision will be either:

  • Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
  • Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you can appeal the decision

Common rejection reasons include:

  • No travel insurance – it is a mandatory requirement that you have valid travel insurance in place for your trip
  • No proof of accommodation – whether you are staying in a hotel or hostel or in private accommodation, you must provide proof of this when you apply for a visa
  • Purpose of trip is not clear – whatever your reason for traveling to Belgium, you must provide proof of this. This could be a travel itinerary, proof of enrollment in a course, or a work contract

Schengen area

The Schengen area is made up of 27 European countries that agreed to create common entry and exit requirements in order to remove the need for internal borders. As long as Schengen area entry requirements are met, the agreement allows foreigners to travel freely between participating countries without having to go through border controls (some exceptions apply, see below).

Schengen area countries

Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Entry/exit requirements

The Schengen area has common rules about visas and controls at external borders and has abolished checks within its internal borders. However, some Schengen area countries may require you to register with local authorities shortly after you arrive, particularly when you are staying in private accommodations.

Canadians do not need a visa to travel to countries within the Schengen area for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you leave the Schengen area and return within the same 180-day period, the previous stay will count against the permitted 90 days.

If you plan to stay for longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, you must contact the  high commission or embassy  of the country or countries to which you are travelling and obtain the appropriate visa before you travel. If you do not obtain the appropriate visa and you stay longer than the permitted 90 days in the Schengen area, you may be fined or deported.

It is important to get your passport stamped when you first enter the Schengen area. If you do not have an entry stamp from your first Schengen port of entry, you may have problems if you encounter the local police (or other authorities) anywhere in the Schengen area during your visit or with immigration officials at the time of departure.

The European Commission’s  Migration and Home Affairs  web page provides more information and a calculator to help you to find the number of visa-free permitted travel days you have left in the Schengen area, taking into account your previous stays there.

The Schengen Borders Code allows member states to temporarily reintroduce internal border controls if there is a serious threat to public policy or internal security. Canadians wishing to enter a Schengen area country that has reintroduced internal border controls could be required to present a passport, valid for at least three months from the time of expected departure from that country. For more information, visit the European Union’s  Temporary Reintroduction of Border Control web page.

Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Canada Visa for the citizens of Belgium

Same as many other nationalities, the citizens of Belgium are not required to obtain a visa when they travel to Canada for tourism purposes. That is because as a Belgian, you are visa-exempt. However, you do need to apply for a Canada ETA before departure and iVisa can help you get it in as little as half an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eta.

An ETA is a new permit requirement for visa-exempt nationals who will entry in Canada by air.

What are the requirements for a Canada eTA for the citizens of Belgium?

If there is one thing you do not have to worry about is meeting the requirements. The list is short, and the items on it are easy to obtain. iVisa will ask that you have at hand the following during the online application process:

Valid passport – you cannot apply for a Canada ETA unless you are a passport holder. But that is not all. The travel document needs to maintain its validity for at least another 6 months from the date of arrival in Canada, so make sure to check your passport’s expiry date before you apply for your ETA.

E-mail address – you need to provide iVisa with a valid address because the ETA confirmation is sent via e-mail in PDF format. While the ETA is electronically linked to your passport and you do not have to hold a physical copy, most people prefer to print one out, just in case.

Means of payment – an online application process requires that you make the payment online as well. To that effect, you need to have a valid method of payment. iVisa accepts credit or debit cards, but you can also use PayPal, Alipay, or WeChat. Whichever you find most convenient.

What are the fees and processing times offer by iVisa?

You will be asked to choose a processing time for your application. Your choice determines the cost of your Canada ETA . You can opt for one of the following options:

Standard processing – if time is not an issue, you can opt for the slowest and cheapest choice you have at hand. By choosing this option, your application for a Canada ETA is processed within 24 hours , and the cost is USD $47.99 .

Rush processing – speeding things up a little, this option delivers your Canada ETA within just 12 hours . The cost, on the other hand, goes a little higher. You are charged USD $83.49 .

Super Rush processing – if you choose this option, you can apply for your Canada ETA on your way to the airport. Your application is processed within just 6 hours , and you are charged USD $126.49 .

How's the iVisa online application form?

After you gather all of the above, you can move on and fill in the application form . If, at any moment, you need some help completing this task, feel free to contact iVisa’s customer support via phone or online chat. The service is free of charge and available non-stop.

You will notice that iVisa broke down the form into three easy steps.

  • Step number one requires you to provide personal information such as name, address, phone number, date of birth, etc. Passport info and details about your trip are necessary as well. You will also have to choose between the 3 processing time mention above.
  • Reaching step number two, you need to cover the payment and carefully review your form so that it does not contain any mistakes.
  • While step number three wants you to upload the supporting documents of your application.

When you are finished, click the submit button and iVisa will handle the rest.

What's the validity of this ETA?

This ETA is valid for 5 years after issued or until passport expires . Meaning you must enter Canada within this period.

How many entries am I granted? How long can I stay in Canada?

You're granted a Multiple Entry . And you can stay a maximum of 180 days Per Entry .

Do I have to apply for my kids?

Yes. Even if they are minors, every traveler regardless their age must apply for an ETA .

Do you have more questions?

For more information on this inquiry you can go to this link . Also, you can contact our customer service, anytime, any day!

The bottom line is that the citizens of Belgium do not need a Canada visa, but a Canada ETA is a must if you travel by air. The document you are sent keeps its validity for 5 years, or until your passport expires, you can use it multiple times, and it allows you to stay in Canada for up to 6 months per entry. Leave this process to iVisa and have a terrific trip.

Minister Joly to travel to Belgium to attend NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

From: Global Affairs Canada

News release

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will be travelling to Brussels, Belgium, to attend the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting from April 3 to 4.

April 2, 2024 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

In Brussels, Minister Joly will attend the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, where she will meet with her NATO counterparts and partners to discuss the current global security environment and welcome Sweden to its first Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as an Ally following its accession to NATO on March 7, 2024.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers will also mark NATO’s 75th anniversary and celebrate the years of cooperation and historic achievements on security, underpinned by a strong transatlantic bond. The ministers will also hold a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting to discuss continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression. Minister Joly will take the opportunity to reaffirm Canada’s continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will reiterate Canada’s position that Ukraine should become a full member of NATO as soon as conditions allow.

“As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of NATO, the world is facing an increasingly complex political and security environment, making NATO more important than ever in ensuring transatlantic security. I look forward to continuing addressing international security challenges with our NATO Allies and partners while in Brussels.” - Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Quick facts

Canada co-founded NATO in 1949. Today, NATO comprises 32 Allies that are united in their commitment to transatlantic security and defence.

Current Canadian contributions to NATO include:

  • supporting NATO assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe through Operation REASSURANCE. With approximately 1,000 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members currently deployed, it is Canada’s largest international military operation. Canada has been leading the multinational enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Latvia since 2017. In July 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the renewal and expansion of Operation REASSURANCE, committing $2.6 billion to a 3-year mandate, with up to 2,200 CAF troops continuously deployed
  • hosting the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence, located in Montréal, Quebec, and NATO’s North American Regional Office of the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic, to be located in Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • continuing to support training and capacity-building efforts in the Middle East under Operation IMPACT, including through NATO Mission Iraq, which was set up under Canadian command, and contributing to lasting security and stability in the country
  • providing CAF personnel support to the NATO-led international peace support operation in Kosovo through Operation KOBOLD

In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Canada has committed over $13.3 billion to date in financial, military, humanitarian, development, security and stabilization and immigration assistance. This includes over $4 billion worth of military assistance donations to Ukraine, including Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks and an armoured recovery vehicle, a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System with associated munitions, armoured combat support vehicles and anti-tank weapons.
