Once a remote lake situated in the wilderness and visited only by the most dedicated trekkers, it is now a highly accessible tourist attraction due to the development of a jeep track. Still, the jeeps only go up till the lake's so called 'base camp'. From there you can either choose to hike a short trail or ride a mule up to this majestic high-altitude lake.

Trip Overview & Itinerary

Reaching ratti gali lake.

My trip to Ratti Gali Lake was managed by a group trekking company. They picked me up from I-8 Islamabad at 3am in the morning in a Toyota Coaster. Ratti Gali Lake's distance from Islamabad is about 250 km for which we travelled overnight and then through the day to reach the town of Dowarian at around 1pm.

Jeep Track to Ratti Gali Lake

From Dowarian we got into jeeps which would take us up to the base camp. Initially we drove through a forest alongside a raging yet pictureque water stream which orginates from the lake. In the second half of the jeep journey, the altitude increased beyond the treeline and from here on the terrain was a mix of rocks and grass. The jeep track was generally quite narrow with a few dangerous hairpin turns.

A single track served both directions of traffic, and the journey becomes particularly adventurous when you have to cross an oncoming jeep for which your driver will utilise the entire width of the track. This is even more scary when your jeep is on the outside, inches away from the drop down into the freezing glacial water. In total in took us about 2.5 - 3 hours to reach the lake's base camp just before dusk.

Ratti Gali Camping

If we were to commence your journey from Dowarian at early morning then it could have been possible to do the entire Ratti Gali round trip within a day. The other option is to stay the night at the base camp campsite which the locals have established on a plateau just below the Lake. All necessary camping equipment such as tents, mattresses and blankets are available so visitors do not need to bring anything of their own.

Available Facilities at Campsite

Food was also available at prices according to the location, that is, higher than usual. At night, we sat around a bonfire but in hindsight this should have been avoided since it is one of the preventable causes of deforestation in the region. Fire wood doesn't come cheap either since the locals bring it from lower altitudes where there are trees. Ratti Gali's temperature dropped to as low as 5°C even in August but thankfully we had warm clothing and high quality sleeping bags.

Ratti Gali Lake can be reached either on foot or on the back of a mule. There is something about the feeling of accomplishment one feels when they put actual effort to reach a goal, which is why I highly discourage the option to ride a mule. When you put it in actual physical effort to reach a goal, the end result is a lot more rewarding.

The water stream on the left side of the campsite comes from the lake. Keeping the stream to our left, we climbed up from the base camp. It was a fairly steep climb through a grassy terrain with a few swamp patches along the way.

After about 30 mins or so of hiking, we saw the 'mini' Ratti Gali which forms just below the actual Ratti Gali.

As we neared the top, the nearly vertical mountain seen in the backdrop of Ratti Gali slowly started to emerge. The trail eventually flattened out and soon enough we were gazing upon the magnificence of Ratti Gali in all its glory.

Ratti Gali Lake's weather was very pleasant during my trip. The sun was out and temperature wasn't too cold. We had a full day to spend at the lake, which is in my opinion too long. One or two hours at the lake would have been enough. To pass time, I hiked up to the hill on the left of the lake. From there I could see the lake from up above. The water's turquoise colour can only really be appreciated when seen from up above.

I hiked back down to the lake, ate the lunch which was provided by the organiser and with nothing else to do, fell asleep by the lakeside. At that time I wasn't very well aware about sunburn at high altitudes. By the time I woke up my face and legs (I was wearing three-quarter shorts) were burning.

Before dark I hiked back down to the base camp and the next day we headed back to dowarian and then to Islamabad. The sunburn got worse in the next day or two and didn't properly heal till after 2 weeks!

The region between the Neelum Valley on the Kashmir side and the Lulusar-Dudipatsar National Park on the KPK side is home to a number of lakes, many of them are famous such as Dudipatsar Lake and Saral Lake, yet many are unknown and unnamed. A few of these lakes can be accessed through the Ratti Gali hike, namely the Hans Raj Lake and Gattian Lake.

Having the right equipment and gear is essential for an enjoyable hiking experience. Check out the list of recommended hiking gear .

Ratti Gali Lake Trekking Guide

One of the extra ordinary trekking attractions in moderated altitude category is Ratti Gali Lake. The most sparkling crowns of the Neelum Valley, Ratti Gali Lake is located at 3600 meters and surrounded by grassy slopes and a number of waterfalls.

Ratti Gali Lake is accessible from three routes i.e. from Dowarian, Neelum Valley, from Burawai, Kaghan Valley and from Jalkhad, Kaghan Valley. All three treks are extremely scenic and naturally rich. Due to the location of the lake, all three treks require energies and long hours walking with necessary camping gear along with all food and fuel arrangements.

The trek from Jalkhad (Noorinar Top) to Dowarian via Noori Lake, Hans Raaj Lake and Ratti Gali Lake may be completed in minimum 3 days. It is recommended to complete all the preparations at Naran to avoid any inconvenience.

Naran to Jalkhad

It takes about 2 hours by a private jeep/Suzuki van from Naran to Jalkhad. This is a lovely ride with serene views of Kunhar River, side streams, waterfalls and forested landscapes of Kaghan Valley. There are several staying options at Battakundi and Burawai before reaching the Jalkad. Jalkad is a beautiful valley and seasonal tourist settlement with a restaurant, a small mosque and a couple of basic commodity shops. There is an excellent riverside camping field behind the restaurant. The Jeeps can also be hired from here for the trek’s starting point just after the Noorinar Top. If a porter/guide is required, make sure that the hired person has done the complete trek recently.

Jalkhad to Noorinar Top

Due to the heavy snowfall on Noorinar and surrounding heights, the road to Sharda from Jalkahd remains closed till the mid of the season. Occasional glacier and landslides also create problems for jeep traveling on this jeep road.

If the road is opened, it may take upto three hours to Noorinar Top, 17KM from Jalkhad. This is an awesome jeep ride with incredible views of snowcapped mountains, frequent side streams and grassy slopes with a smooth flowing stream in the deep. Ask the driver to drop a further 2 kilometers from the Noorinar Top at the starting point of trek.

Noorinar Top to Noori Lake

The trek starts from the jeep road and enters into the remote green and white hills. The walking trail is sometimes too narrow to step on due to the dense layer of lush green grass and flowers of every color. This is an easy walking for about 45 minutes to reach a remarkably large and noisy waterfall flowing from the Noori Lake. A small stone hut is made by local gujars who take care of a large herd of sheep and goats. Beware of watchdogs kept by the gujars.

From here the treks towards Noori Lake and the Ratti Gali Pass divide in two directions. The path for Noori Lake is on the right side along the waterfall. This is an inclined climb on the stony ridge for about 10 minutes which takes you to bowl shaped valley, usually filled with white snow. A short walk on the snow is required to get on the left side trek. This is a moderated hike of about another 45 minutes to reach the snowy lake, circled by mountains.

This is an ideal location for the first night camping for those who are carrying proper gear. The nights can be very cold as we found the lake’s surface frozen in the morning.

Noori Lake to Hans Raj Lake

This is a long day walking which requires steady efforts and energies. It takes about half an hour to back to the waterfall from where the trek to Ratti Gali Pass starts. The most of this part is a gradual inclined walking before the Ratti Gali Pass. The water availability is good throughout but water bottles are recommended. The best time to start cover this section is the early morning as in the sunlight it can be difficult to walk for long hours.

To reach on the Ratti Gali Pass, it’s all about jumping and climbing over the boulders and stones. It may take upto 2 hours to scrambling over the rocks and snow. Once on the Pass, there are superb views of the valleys on both sides. In addition, the partial part of deep blue Hans Raj Lake on the Dowarian Valley and an unnamed small lake on the Kaghan side is also visible from the Top. A carpet of extremely beautiful flowers in random colors is a sensational reward.

From the Ratti Gali Pass onwards, there is a steep or moderate decline till the Dowarian. From the Top, the Hans Raj Lake is less than an hour’s easy walking. An easy water crossing is required before you reach to the lake. If you have time and food, the lakeside offers a perfect camping experience.

Hans Raj Lake to Ratti Gali Lake

The Ratti Gali Lake is a 2 hours walk from the Hans Raj Lake. The path continues on the grassy slope, frequent streams and a couple of snow patches. There are multiple visible treks and all leads to the Ratti Gali Lake. It can be a better option to stay on the higher trek to avoid an inclined walk just before the Ratti Gali Lake.

There is a wide and grassy plane just under the lake which is an ideal location for camping. A brilliant water stream from the lake is dropping on the end of the plane, adding a splendid grandeur to the whole view. This is a small summer settlement with few houses and herds of domestic animals.

A further half an hour will be required to reach the one of the most spectacular splendors of the Neelum Valley. This is a unique combination of sparkling snow, blue and green water and lush green outfield with a dark grey mountain wall in the back drop. A number of waterfalls from the heights around are falling into the lake and giving this heavenly land an unparalleled touch.

Ratti Gali Lake to Dowarian

This is almost a day long walk which may take 5 to 8 hours to reach the lower Dowarian. The path is easy and scenic with frequent hamlets, cultivated fields, snow patches, water streams and thick forests. Snow crossing may require getting on the right trek. As the altitude decreases, the views down to the valley look superb due to the heavily forested slopes on both sides of the river.

At the start of the under construction jeep road, there is a small hotel for fresh food, tea and optional stay. There are chances to find a private jeep from the hotel for the Dowarian, Sharda or Atthmuqam. For rest and stay at Dowarian, there are several guest houses with reasonable arrangements for food and stay.

Dowarian to Muzaffarabad

Local transport is rare in Neelum Valley but may be found on the main road to travel across the major spots of the whole valley. A privately hired jeep can take upto 2 hours from Dowarian to Atthmuqam from where public vans and coaches leave frequently for Muzaffarabad.

Very informative.

Thank you….

Everything posted was actually very reasonable. But, what about this? what if you composed a catchier title? I ain’t saying your information isn’t solid., however what if you added a title to possibly get a person’s attention? I mean Ratti – Galli – Dowarian – Neelum – Valley – Azad – Kashmir is a little boring.

You ought to peek at Yahoo’s home page and see how they create article headlines to grab people interested. You might add a related video or a related pic or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it would bring your blog a little bit more interesting.

' src=

You can definitely see your enthusiasm in the work you write. The sector hopes for more passionate writers such as you who aren’t afraid to say how they believe. Always follow your heart.

' src=

Spot on with this write-up, I truly believe that this site needs far more attention. I’ll probably be returning to see more, thanks for the information!

' src=

Unquestionably believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of.

I say to you, I definitely get irked while people think about worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal.

Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

  • Did a summit of tiger peak whoch would not be possible without their team. Had crazy fun. Would alway go again InshaAllah.

One aspect that truly impressed me was the attention to detail. K2 Climbers thoughtfully arranged little surprises along the way, such as a surprise stop at a breathtaking viewpoint or arranging a local culinary experience that perfectly complemented the tour. These thoughtful touches made the tour even more memorable and created an immersive experience that I will cherish for a lifetime.

It was an awesome experience with k2climbers. Both Bilal and Javed bhai were amazing in managing the trip. Due to their continuous motivation, the whole group was able to successfully summit tiger peak. There was a minor hiccup at the end but it was managed perfectly by both of them. Will definitely plan another trip with them in the future.

I have experience to travel with k2 climbers for two times. I found them highly experienced , professional and dedicated. The team is so caring and equipped with the gears needed for traveling. I highly recommend to travel with k2 climbers.

Hiking

Ratti Gali Lake Trek A Complete Guide

Ratti Gali Lake Trek

Surrounded by Pir Panjal range in the happening city of Kashmir, the serene and silent Ratti Gali Lake is situated at a height more than snow. As snow-capped mountains stand by and beautifully green meadows – there is no better place to have an amazing hike where you will see crystal clear water of the alpine lake.

Trekking Route

The trail to Ratti Gali Lake trek starts from Sonamarg village which is famous for mountains and lush green forests. The route proceeds to Sind river bank, about 10 km walk then the Nichnai Pass altitude of 13,500 feet . The path drops down into the valley of Vishansar Lake and goes ahead along the Nallah (stream) for further 10 km to reach the Ratti Gali Lake. 30 km of the distance will be added to the trek, so you will be hiking for 4 days.

Best Time to Trek

If you are looking for the best time to start the Ratti Gali Lake trek, July and August are the perfect summer months to go. During those days the weather is generally fine, and we enjoy a superb hiking opportunity at the tops of mountains. These months are considered as the coldest one with heavy snowfalls which make the road hard to tackle.

Trekking Difficulty

Ratti Gali trek is a moderate difficulty-level, most beginners who are reasonably fit can accomplish it because the trail is not very steep and the path is well-maintained. It is a progressive ascent and hence it provides the much needed time to get used to the altitude. However, the low level of oxygen in the air coupled with the bone-chilling climate may induce altitude sickness. Full of life, newcomers: Acclimatization stops being an integral part of the pathway on the way, is a must.

Permits and Regulations

A trekker, for example, should have secured an inner line permit to the Ratti Gali Lake, which can be acquired from a DC office in Sonamarg. The laid down strict regulations which ensures the fragile ecology of the region are kept intact, which involve no littering, no camping by the lake, and no feeding of animals.

Packing Essentials

Whilst packing for your trip, ensure that you take along with you plenty of woollen garments and windproof jackets to overcome the extreme cold. Next to hiking shoes, woollen socks, gloves, warm cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, and basic medicines are the only goods you need to take. The other important gadgets to carry are your water bottle, energy-rich snacks and dry fruits to keep you nourished.

Safety Tips

Therefore, when it comes this isolated area with a complex weather condition, it’s advisable to observe the safety measures. Staying in a group, carrying map, communication device, flashlight and keep yourself out of going alone is always important. Keep yourselves from getting tired and controlled your speed. Beware of signs such as excessive fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia, irregular heart rate, and confusion; ascend immediately if you have them.

Highlights of the Trek

The most astounding moment of the entire trek is when one is affronted by the grandeur of the Ratti Gali Lake with its turquoise blue water beautifully suspended against the white snow-capped mountains. I have been an avid camper for a considerable period now, and if I were to carve out a memory that should last the longest, I would surely not miss this thrilling camping experience beside a starry night sky next to the aquamarine blue water. Hence, if you are an experienced hiker seeking solitude and eventful adventures; the Ratti Gali Lake trek will reward you with massive aesthetic treat. Keep in mind that you must face the freezing cold weather and to uneven terrain in order to experience to the beauty of the lakes in the highest altitude of Kashmir.

10 facts about the Tretyakov Gallery that even Russians don't know

The State Tretyakov Gallery is the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world.

The State Tretyakov Gallery is the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world.

1. The museum began with the purchase of one genre painting

The gallery's chronology began with Russian merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov's purchase of Vasily Khudyakov's painting Skirmish with Finnish Smugglers . He bought it for 450 rubles (almost $7,700 in today's worth) in 1856 at the artist's workshop in St. Petersburg.

ratti gali lake trek

It was the Smugglers that initiated the collection, which later would become the largest assembly of Russian art in the world. Today the painting is located in the gallery's room 16.

2. The gallery was founded by two brothers, not one

In the beginning, Tretyakov's younger brother Sergei also collected canvases painted by Russian artists. The first Russian painting in his collection was Alexei Bogolyubov's Ipatievsky Monastery near Kostroma .

ratti gali lake trek

It was bought on recommendation from Pavel Mikhailovich. Later, if his older brother was for some reason unable to buy a painting, it was purchased by Sergei.

3. The Tretyakov Gallery was a collection not only of Russian but also of foreign paintings

With time the younger Tretyakov began collecting western European paintings, primarily the French romantics and realists.

ratti gali lake trek

He bequeathed his collection to his brother. The paintings were brought to the mansion on Lavrushinsky Lane and in 1892 Pavel gifted the united collection to the city along with the house.

In 1925, during the Soviet regime, the foreign paintings in the Tretyakov Gallery were divided among the State Pushkin Museum and the State Hermitage Museum. That is how, for example, the Pushkin Museum obtained Jules Bastien-Lepage's masterpiece Love in the Village .

4. The gallery was bequeathed to the Russian people

Tretyakov was 28 years old when he drafted the first bequest on the creation of the gallery. Later, entrusting the collection to the city, he presented certain conditions: The gallery must be open "permanently" and be free of charge, and it must operate at least four days a week, excluding Easter, Christmas and New Year's Day.

5. The tsar who didn’t accept a historical painting

The first Tretyakov painting to show a historical theme was Konstantin Flavitsky's Princess Tarakanova in Prison .

ratti gali lake trek

Its protagonist was the daughter of Empress Elizabeth Romanov and Count Alexei Razumovsky. By order of Catherine the Great, Tarakanova was brought to Russia from Italy and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, where she died. Tsar Alexander II did not like the painting. In the catalogue of the Art Academy's exhibition he wrote that the painting does not correspond to reality.

6. There were practically no women at the inauguration of the gallery

On opening day in August 1893 the Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov Moscow City Gallery was visited by almost 700 people.

ratti gali lake trek

The newspapers reported that the visitors were artists from various generations, students, artisans, shopkeepers, clerks and peasants. However, there were practically no women among them.

7. Repin's famous canvas was censored

Some canvases were forbidden to be exhibited with the collection. The first to be censored was Ilya Repin's famous Ivan the Terrible and His Son on November 16, 1581 (known as "Ivan the Terrible Kills His Son").

ratti gali lake trek

Tsar Alexander III categorically disliked the painting and on April 1, 1885 it was prohibited to be shown to visitors. Tretyakov had even built an annex to present it as a special work. The ban was lifted only three months later.

8. The artists valued the collector more than the tsar

Tretyakov's authority among artists was so high that he was secretly given the privilege of buying paintings first. The phrase "I ask you to consider the painting mine" was a sign of quality.

ratti gali lake trek

The collector's taste and ability to detect a masterpiece were undeniable. If Tretyakov showed interest in a painting, even members of the royal family sometimes could not purchase it.

9. A separate building was built for an Alexander Ivanov painting

Tsar Alexander II bought The Appearance of Christ Before the People for 15,000 rubles (almost $245,500 today) only a few hours after the death of painter Alexander Ivanov. Pavel Tretyakov was left only with its sketches. However, in 1925, in the Soviet period, it was decided to transfer the painting to the Tretyakov Gallery. A special hall was built in the gallery that could fit the 5.4 x 7.5-meter canvas. It has been there since 1932.

10. A bust of the gallery's founder replaced a sculpture of Stalin

Until 1938 a monument of Lenin had stood in front of the Tretyakov Gallery. In 1939 it was replaced with a statue of Stalin.

Only in the 1980s was Stalin's sculpture replaced by that of the gallery's founder. But the dictator’s sculpture still stands in the grounds of the gallery – in the inner courtyard.

The Japanese garden, a great model of Japanese landscape gardening art has a 13-level stone pagoda of the 18th century, stone Japanese lamps, ponds, falls and streams, tea lodges and more than 100 species of the most character Japan plants. It is especially decorative in spring, during Oriental cherry blossoming and in fall, when foliage blazes in crimson colors.

Moscow historic parks

Historic nature parks and estates once were the mansions of the Moscow aristocracy. At that far times the estates were outside the Moscow city limits, but after the city expansion and urbanization, they became easily accessible.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

  • Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation, Moscow
  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Gorky Park?

  • In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
  • In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
  • Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Soviet Russia

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

Russia today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

  • Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
  • Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
  • Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
  • Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

Park attractions.

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Garage Museum

Photo from  https://muzeolog.com/

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Read our article about Garage Museum of Contemporary Art to learn more.

Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park

Photo from  https://new-magazine.ru/

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.
