Review: French Bee A350 Premium Economy (San Francisco to Tahiti)

Wednesday  newsletters  always feature a  hotel  or  flight  review.

Today: Review of French Bee A350’s Premium Economy Class (San Francisco to Tahiti)

Last September, I flew in Premium Economy with French Bee from San Francisco to Tahiti. French Bee is a French low-cost, long-haul airline based at Paris Orly Airport (although the carrier refers to itself as “smart-cost” instead of “low-cost”). It operates flights between France and worldwide leisure destinations (e.g. New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Tahiti, La Reunion, and the Dominican Republic). French bee is the first airline in the world to have a 100% Airbus A350 fleet. The A350 combines next generation engines, advanced aerodynamics, and lightweight materials, which result in a 25% reduction of fuel consumption and operating costs compared to competing aircrafts of the previous generation, making low-cost long-haul flying viable. The A350 also reduces CO2 emissions by 30% making French Bee the airline that emits the least amount of CO2 per seat and per mile in the world.

French Bee offers two cabin classes of service onboard its A350 planes: Premium Economy Class (called “Premium Blue”) and Economy Class (called “Eco Blue”). There is no Business Class. As a low-cost airline, French Bee charges additional fees for services and amenities offered, such as for seat selection, onboard catering, and airport services like lounge access and expedited security queues. Premium Economy Class tickets though include several complimentary services and amenities, such as meals,  juices, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, an amenity kit and checked/hold baggage (similar to the Premium Economy Class cabins of legacy carriers).

My overall experience with French Bee was great and I was happy with the onboard service. The seat wasn’t lie flat of course, but it was pretty comfortable and I would recommend this product if you’re trying to get to any of French Bee’s destinations at the lowest fare possible. One particular thing that stood out during my experience with French Bee was the excellent customer service. The day before my flight, while trying to check-in online, I noticed that there was a mistake with my date of birth on the ticket. I was preparing myself for a lengthy wait with the airline’s call center (as is the case with most airlines), but that turned out not to be the case: I was assisted within minutes via the chat option on French Bee’s official website by a very friendly travel agent (and I even received a follow-up phone call).

Have you ever flown with French Bee? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

1. ABOUT FRENCH BEE

Here are some interesting & fun facts about French Bee:

  • Founded in 2016, French Bee is a sister airline of Air Caraïbes . Both airlines are owned by Groupe Dubreuil, a family-owned group with a wide range of activities in the distribution and air transportation sectors.
  • French Bee was initially named French Blue. However, In November 2017, while the airline as “French Blue” was applying with the United States Department of Transportation for a foreign air carrier permit to begin service to the country, US-based JetBlue raised objections to another airline serving the country bearing the word “Blue” in its name. In response, the airline was temporarily renamed to simply “French”, before the airline announced on 30 January 2018 that it was rebranding as “French Bee”.
  • The company is a partner of the Airbus Fello’ Fly project. This project involves flying long-haul planes V-shaped very close, like migratory birds. These formation flights make it possible to take advantage of the wake phenomenon: the planes located at the rear, quite close , will take advantage of the groove created by the aircraft in front to propel themselves using less energy. This flight practice could reduce overall fuel consumption by around 5-10% per trip.
  • French bee and its sister company Air Caraïbes have been the first airline companies worldwide to be Green Pilot® certified. Green Pilot is a new label rewarding airline companies which have developed a solid program to reduce carbon emissions in their operations and have actively involved all their employees in their green policy.

FRENCH BEE AIRBUS A350

2. CABIN LAYOUT

French Bee’s Airbus A350-900 features 411 seats:

  • 376 Eco Blue (Economy) seats arranged in a 3-4-3 layout. Some rows toward the rear of the aircraft configured in a 3-3-3 layout.
  • 35 Premium Blue (Premium Economy) seats, spread over 5 rows in a 2-3-2 layout. Premium Blue is located in a private cabin at the front of the aircraft

French Bee also operates the A350-1000 variant which features a total of 480 (!) seats: 40 Premium Blue seats in a 2-4-2 layout and 440 Eco Blue seats in a 3-4-3 layout. This makes it one of the highest density aircraft layouts in the world. To be clear, this layout isn’t disproportionately dense compared to French Bee’s A350-900 planes. The A350-1000 is just a larger plane, so it makes sense that there are more seats. In comparison, British Airways uses A350-1000s with a maximum seating capacity of 331 passengers, while Cathay Pacific uses A350-100s with a maximum capacity of 334 passengers.

FRENCH BEE PREMIUM ECONOMY

3. PREMIUM ECONOMY CLASS SEAT

French Bee’s Premium Blue (Premium Economy) seats offer 36 inches (91 cm) of pitch and measure 18 inches (46 cm) wide. Each seat is equipped with an adjustable leg, foot, and head rest as well as a power outlet. The recline on French Bee’s Premium Blue seats are comfortable, but can encroach on the space of the passenger in the row behind.

For comparison; the Eco Blue (Economy Class) seats offer 32 inches (81 cm) of pitch and measure 16 inches (41 cm) wide, with two power outlets included with each set of three or four seats.

FRENCH BEE PREMIUM ECONOMY

4. AMENITIES

French Bee’s Premium Economy Class passengers receive a fleece blanket and a fluffy pillow. A comfort kit is provided as well; it includes an eye mask, socks, headphones, toothbrush and ear plugs.

FRENCH BEE PREMIUM ECONOMY

Meals are included when flying in Premium Blue. During this flight from San Francisco to Tahiti, a supper and breakfast were served (the menus were displayed on the entertainment screen):

  • Supper was served on one tray shortly after takeoff. It comprised 4 plates: hummus with pita bread, sweet & sour chicken with fried rice, camembert with strawbery, and chocolate cake.
  • A light breakfast was served 90 minutes prior to arrival in Tahiti. It consisted of yoghurt and some bread rolls.

Economy Class passengers can buy onboard food items & beverages. They can also reserve pre-paid chef-prepared meals (including kosher, halal and vegan menus).

FRENCH BEE PREMIUM ECONOMY

6. ENTERTAINMENT

Each Premium Economy Class seat is equipped with a 12- inch HD touchscreen. The inflight program includes 20 movies, TV shows, video games, and music. The entertainment’s highlight is the plane’s tail camera, which allows for great views of the A350’s fuselage, especially during takeoff and landing. Another fun feature is With Sudoku in solo or multi-player modes, which allows passengers to strike up in-flight friendships.

FRENCH BEE PREMIUM ECONOMY

7. ONBOARD INTERNET

Wi-Fi is offered onboard French Bee’s A350 aircraft and 4 types of internet packages can be purchased:

  • Hello plan: $4 USD all fees included for a 10MB plan.
  • Social plan: $9 USD all fees included for a 50MB plan.
  • Geek plan: $17 USD all fees included for a 100MB plan.

I’m so happy to read your review, I’m going on French Bee to Paris from SFO in about 10 days. This will be my first time. My class is Smart Economy which includes a meal and a checked bag. I wondered how often French Bee keeps all their flights going as when I booked my seat there were so many empty seats and it’s almost time to go. But overall I’m thrilled to be going as I got a good price and a direct flight to Paris, woohoo!

Press Release: French Bee offers virtual visit of A350

french bee virtual tour

This innovative partnership between French bee and Matterport transports passengers into a new era of tourism, a sector particularly challenged by the increasing influence of the internet, changing consumer booking habits. It is also in line with French bee’s desire to use new technologies such as VR and 3D models to stand out in an ultra-competitive market.

From the cabin to the cockpit, the 376 economy class seats and 35 premium class seats materialize before the eyes of travelers, travel agents and aviation specialists. Thanks to Mattertags, French bee also provides curious travelers with points of interest where they can access additional information on the characteristics of the company’s aircraft.

Sophie Hocquez, Commercial Director of French bee commented: “I am very proud of this partnership, which considerably enriches the way we present and promote our offer to travellers, who are eager for new consumer experiences and the most complete transparency on products. We now have at our disposal a unique ‘something extra’ of which, we are convinced, will make a difference.”

James Morris-Manuel, EMEA Director of Matterport, also stated: “Capturing the latest generation A350 aircraft for a company as dynamic as French bee is a major step in our development strategy in the French tourism sector. I am particularly pleased to present such a modern and technical object on our platform, and I firmly believe that this partnership marks a turning point for our 3D technology.”

You can take a virtual 3D tour inside the world's densest Airbus A350

Ben Mutzabaugh

Curious about what it's like to step inside the plane of a long-haul budget airline? If so, you're in luck. French discounter French Bee is giving you the chance.

The Paris-based low-cost carrier says it's now the first airline to offer a 3D "virtual tour" of an Airbus A350 aircraft . The airline partnered with California-based start-up Matterport to put together the experience, which allows viewers to check out French Bee's tightly-packed A350 widebodies. At 411 seats, they are the densest-capacity A350s in service. Delta, by comparison, puts 306 seats into the same airplane.

"From the cabin to the cockpit, the 376 economy class seats and 35 premium class seats materialize before the eyes of travelers, travel agents and aviation specialists," French Bee and Matterport said in a statement.

Related: Two airlines announced Newark-Paris flights on the same day. It may not last.

The tour lets visitors wind their way from the A350's cockpit back through the cabin, where they can check out French Bee's 2-3-2 "Premium" cabin and 3-4-3 coach section . Viewers can wander all the way back to the aft galley.

"I am very proud of this partnership, which considerably enriches the way we present and promote our offer to travelers, who are eager for new consumer experiences and the most complete transparency on products," Sophie Hocquez, French Bee's Commercial Director, said in a statement. "We now have at our disposal a unique 'something extra' of which, we are convinced, will make a difference."

From the U.S. French Bee offers nonstop service from San Francisco (SFO) to both Paris Orly (ORY) and the Papeete airport in the French Polynesia territory of Tahiti. Next summer, French Bee plans to add another U.S. route between Newark Liberty (EWR) and Paris Orly.

Looking for a cheap and fast way to get across the pond? Low-cost carrier French bee launched a direct flight from Miami to Paris-Orly on December 15, 2022, making it the most affordable nonstop flight option of its kind in the region. You could find yourself in Paris for as little as $440 roundtrip or, if you want to dole out the cash for an upgrade, travel in style with their Premium Economy class. But for an airline who’s main draw is affordability, the question remains: Is Premium Economy worth it?

We flew French bee’s Premium Economy class during their inaugural flight from Miami to Paris-Orly to find out.

Editor’s Note: The author of this story was hosted by French bee. Fares are accurate as of time of publication.

One-way Premium Economy fares from Miami to Paris-Orly start at $522.

French bee’s Premium Economy is markedly more affordable than premium economy classes on larger carriers.  For comparison, a roundtrip premium economy seat on an American Airlines flight with an overnight connection from Miami to Paris-Orly runs about $2,050 while a roundtrip, nonstop flight in premium economy on Delta into Charles DeGaul goes for $2,000. A roundtrip, nonstop ticket on French bee from Miami to Paris-Orly for the same dates totals just $1,370.

Turkish Airlines Business Class Review: Is It Worth the Money?

Empty Premium Economy cabin on a French bee plane

French bee flights between the US and France operate on Airbus A350-900s, state-of-the-art aircraft featuring quieter cabins and 35 Premium Economy seats. Sitting in the private cabin at the front of the plane, I could hardly tell that the engines were running.

Each seat is 18 inches wide with adjustable headrests, knee and lumbar supports, footrests,  and—best of all—36 inches of legroom. The seatbacks are outfitted with USB plugs and LED touch screens where guests can access free entertainment, games, the in-flight menu, and a camera fee showing the exterior of the plane.

Reclining Premium Economy seat on French bee

The seats don’t lie flat, but they do have a deeper incline than standard economy seats and I had no trouble sleeping comfortably on my red-eye.  As someone whose back pain flares without fail on long-haul flights, the extra width and increased pitch made a world of difference.

15 Items You Need to Survive a Long Haul Flight

Food and Drink

We were never short of food or drink throughout the flight. Flight attendants came through the cabin periodically with drink and snack services, including during boarding where passengers were offered their choice of water, orange juice, or champagne.

French bee

The airline offers a choice of proteins or a vegan option for the in-flight meal, which comes with a starter, a main dish, and dessert. I was pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian offering. On the flight in, I enjoyed a pita and hummus plate with fresh fruit and a vegetable and rice medley. On the way home, I was served a stewed eggplant starter followed by a tomato-lentil dish that had me completely forgetting the age-old reputation of airline food.

Dinner and breakfast meal options on an international French bee flight

In the “morning” (emulated by the aircraft’s sunrise mood lighting), we were offered a light breakfast snack with options like yogurt, croissants with jam and butter, pastries, and rice pudding.

Each passenger was provided with an airplane pillow, blanket, and a complimentary reusable zippered pouch containing a sleep mask, pair of socks, wired earbuds, and earplugs. Hot scented towels were passed out before the main meal which, combined with the cabin’s cool-tone atmospheric lighting, created an oddly peaceful atmosphere at cruising altitude.

While WiFi isn’t included in the fare, passengers can purchase one of four different plans, which run anywhere from $4 to $29.

18 Luggage Sets for Every Traveler

Premium Economy includes two 50lb checked bags, a carry-on, and a personal item free of charge. This class also includes perks like priority boarding, line-jump (allowing you to skip to the front of the line in security and customs checks), and priority luggage delivery, meaning you get on and off the plan significantly faster.

Is it Worth the Money?

People deplaning onto the runway off a French bee airplane

If you have the budget and want to get to Europe with minimal jetlag and virtually no aches and pains, Premium Economy is more than worth the money. The cabin is spacious, the seats are notably comfortable, and you’re getting the same Premium Economy experience as major carriers for a fraction of the price.

Even if Premium Economy isn’t for you, with French bee’s endless customization options at each class level , you can truly pay as much or as little as you want.
