"Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed." Eagles announce UK and Netherlands dates as part of their Long Goodbye final world tour

Eagles have added a special three-night residency in Manchester to their final ever tour

The Eagles

The Eagles have added a special mini-residency in Manchester's new Co Op Live Arena as part of their final world tour - dubbed The Long Goodbye. The rock legends will play three separate shows at the venue this coming summer, marking their first announced European dates of 2024. The trio of Manchester shows will be followed by a stop-off in the Netherlands, where The Eagles will play Gelredome in Arnhem.

The band are currently in the middle of the North American leg of the Long Goodbye tour, which continues from next month and wraps up in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 16.

Speaking about their final tour, the band have stated:

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful.

"Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently underway. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

Eagles’ Long Goodbye Is the Best Farewell Tour You’ll See This Year: Review

Eagles ' Long Goodbye tour might be the least quintessentially rock 'n' roll farewell trek on the market right now. It might also be the best.

It's not often you see a message on the screen before an arena rock show asking audience members to stay seated to not obstruct the view of those behind them. Then again, what else would you expect from a band whom Don Henley joked was once accused of "loitering" onstage?

Eagles did little to dispute that allegation on Saturday during their second consecutive performance at Austin's Moody Center. "There's not gonna be much talking," Henley promised. "No fireworks. No wind machines. No butt-wagging choreography. Just a bunch of guys with guitars."

He wasn't kidding about that last part. At any moment, up to six musicians — Henley,  Joe Walsh ,  Timothy B. Schmit , Vince Gill, Deacon Frey and touring guitarist Steuart Smith — flanked the front of the stage, plucking guitars and delivering sublime vocal harmonies. What Eagles lack in stage presence, they make up for with a bottomless treasure trove of hits, some of which (like "Best of My Love" and "The Long Run") didn't even fit into their two-hour performance.

Why Eagles' Long Goodbye Tour Stands Alone Among Farewell Treks

While many legacy acts have increasingly relied on spectacle to distract from their failing vocals (or  possibly outright fakery ), Eagles continue to do what they've done best for more than 50 years: deliver their songs with near-flawless precision, providing "a two-hour vacation from the madness," as Henley put it. Sure, they've lowered the keys of some tunes — sometimes markedly so — but we should all be so lucky to still possess such supple timbre and steady pitch in our seventies.

The other major distinction between the Long Goodbye tour and similar ventures is Eagles' current touring lineup. Some purists may balk at the notion of an Eagles tour without late co-founder Glenn Frey , but it's difficult to imagine better replacements than Gill and Deacon Frey. The former is a fleet-fingered guitarist and brilliant vocalist, tackling the soaring high notes of "Take It to the Limit" with ease. And it's difficult to overstate the grace with which Frey has stepped into his father's shoes, emulating his voice with haunting accuracy while putting some much-needed pep in these boomers' steps. Replacing a key band member is never easy, but by delegating these roles to family and friends, Eagles continue to do justice to their catalog while honoring their legacy in a way that no anonymous hired gun could.

But enough of that woo-woo stuff. If it's rock you want, Walsh is your man. "I had some wonderful times in Austin — according to the police report," he joked on Saturday before one of several howling electric guitar showcases. He shredded through James Gang 's "Funk #49," sent talkbox shockwaves through the arena on "Rocky Mountain Way" and ripped the epochal "Hotel California" solo alongside Smith with the poise and finesse of a classical musician. For decades, Walsh was the epitome of a hard-living rock star, but he still sings capably and plays with stunning clarity.

Steely Dan Is the Perfect Opening Act

It's no small feat warming up an audience for a show of this caliber, but Eagles have picked the perfect tour mates in Steely Dan .  Donald Fagen has dutifully kept the band alive since Walter Becker 's death , and on Saturday he led his cohort of world-class musicians through a hit-filled power hour that dazzled on a technical level, from the drum and saxophone solos on "Aja" to the blistering dueling guitars of "Reelin' in the Years." Both of these bands have always prioritized top-notch songwriting and musicianship, and the Long Goodbye tour is a celebration of both technical excellence and generation-defining songbooks. This road trip might not have any frills, but it also has no pretense — just three hours of stone-cold classics played with peerless precision. One day this kind of tour will be a distant memory, so get it while you can.

For a band that famously said they would only get back together when “hell freezes over”, the Eagles (not The Eagles, apparently) seem to tour so regularly that some form of major climatic event is clearly long overdue. The band are currently coming towards the end of a fairly lengthy jaunt around the UK and Ireland and, fresh from a four night stint at London’s O2, appeared on Monday evening on the stage of the relatively intimate 13,500 capacity First Direct Arena in Leeds. This tour is billed as the History Of The Eagles, and it pretty much lives up to that billing with a couple of exceptions, more of which later. The twenty-seven song set list is a good career retrospective, and the performance was as flawless as you might expect from such a skilled bunch of old pros. The evening started in a low key way with chief Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey ambling on stage, picking up a couple of acoustic guitars and making themselves comfortable on an equipment crate and stool before playing a lovely version of “Saturday Night” from 1973’s “Desperado” album. As the cheers died down they were joined on stage by Bernie Leadon who left the band in 1975, but happily is guesting throughout the current dates. Leadon’s familiar fair, curly locks may have long gone, but his voice is still sweet – as he evidenced on the second number “Train Leaves Here This Morning”- and his guitar playing remains classy. The early part of the first set suffered a little as video interview clips were shown which didn’t help the early rhythm of the show, but in hindsight these were probably deemed necessary to fill some time as additional band members wandered on stage, pieces of kit were introduced and the stage set grew. Bassist Timothy B Schmit joined Henley, Frey and Leadon for “Peaceful Easy Feeling” before Henley took a seat at a small drum kit stage left and the band started “Witchy Woman” while Joe Walsh wandered on unannounced from stage left. Four songs in and the five Eagles were finally present and correct. The remainder of the first set comprised “Doolin’Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)”, “Already Gone” (which featured superb lead playing from Leadon), “Best Of My Love”, “Lyin’ Eyes” (dedicated by Frey to his first wife, “plaintiff”), “One Of These Nights” and “Take It To The Limit”. During this first set Walsh looked rather subdued, perhaps as the songs predated his joining the band but he seemed content to remain low key on these tracks and leave the bulk of the playing to Frey, Leadon and additional guitarist Steuart Smith who throughout the evening contributed a significant amount of excellent guitar work, including a note perfect rendition of Don Felder’s parts of “Hotel California”, on a double neck guitar, naturally. Throughout the evening Walsh worked his way through a staggering array of guitars which pleased the axe-nerds in my area of the crowd as he seemingly changed guitar every song. The ebullient and wisecracking Frey – sample: “I’m from Detroit where mother is a half a word” – announced a short interval with the excuse that with such a lengthy set the band were required a bathroom break to get through it. The interval also saw the last of Leadon’s contributions until the encores. Post interval the journey through the band’s history continued with “Pretty Maids All In A Row”, Walsh’s first vocal lead of the evening. Walsh’s vocals may be fragile but they are endearing, and really it’s his guitar playing that people particularly want to hear and the last third of the set is where he comes to the fore, cutting loose on “Life’s Been Good”, the old James Gang song “Funk #49” and an encore of “Rocky Mountain Way” where the backdrop showed Joe dressed as superman flying across the Rockies as the real Joe dazzled us with his Talk Box and some gonzo riffing. Timothy B Schmit provided gorgeous vocals on “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “Love Will Keep Us Alive” but the vocal star of the Eagles remains Don Henley, possessor of one of the great American voices. His singing on such numbers as “The Best Of My Love”, “Desperado”, “One Of These Nights” and “The Long Run” were simply sublime. Before “In The City” Frey thanked the audience for their respect in remaining seated through the slower ballads but advised that they could now feel free to express themselves. Most didn’t however, and remained seated although the band didn’t seem to mind. The set list was pretty much perfect – although perhaps I’m alone in finding it strange that the “Long Road Out Of Eden” album was ignored entirely throughout the evening’s walk through the band’s history. Not their finest work, but I’d quite like to have heard “Waiting In The Weeds” for example at the expense of “Those Shoes”. The band was augmented by five additional musicians – they were excellent and deserve to be name checked so take a bow Steuart Smith, Scott Crago, Richard Davis, Will Hollis and Michael Thompson. When all is said and done, it has to be said that it was a damn good show. The sound was immaculate throughout with every individual instrument crystal clear. Some may criticise the slickness or predictability of the performance but with ticket prices so high the audience has a right to expect a professional show. The band’s request that audience members remain seated during much of the performance seemed to suit most people, and, it has to be said, their somewhat controversial and often ridiculed “strictly no photography” edict meant that you saw most of the show first hand rather than though the screen of the cell phone of the person in front of you, and this made a surprisingly welcome change. Including the interval and video segments the performance lasted around three hours, which contrasted significantly with Eric Clapton’s miserly eighty five minute performance at the same venue the night before, which still had people grumbling twenty four hours later. There was a sour note to the evening though, and something of a jarring omission. The tour is billed as the History Of The Eagles and while former member Randy Meisner was given a respectful shout out by Frey during the introduction to “Take It To The Limit”, Don Felder’s contribution to the band was studiously and, to my mind, rather pettily ignored altogether. His airbrushing from this history seems so Stalinist that it was almost a surprise to see him still appearing in the photos used in the programme and not as a silhouette. To me this reflected poorly on Frey and Henley, who had they name checked Felder, admitted that they had had their differences, but acknowledged that he too was part of their history they would have looked much more gracious, and bigger people.

I bought tickets to accompany the missus, she’s the Eagles fan, I’m more of a metal fan. However, The Eagles were fantastic, musically of course they were note perfect and vocally - apart from the bass player, his voice was a bit weak to be honest- spot on.

All the favourites from down the ages where there with the crowd singing along to almost every song, there was a lot of love in the crowd!

I particularly liked Joe Walsh’ performance, in the city and Rocky Mountain way we’re powerful and energetic.

The back catalogue is huge and every track a crowd pleaser, surprisingly Hotel California was not the show closer, brilliant as it was, that honour was left to Desperado, as with every track tonight it was delivered beautifully, would I recommend an Eagles gig to anyone unsure whether to chance it or not, absolutely.

I have always wanted to see The Eagles as a matter of fact it is a bucket list concert. My very first time going to the see them and I was not disappointed. Three and a half hours of pure music with a small break. I sang along with almost every song the band played. I have gotten used to politics in concerts this was a politics free zone. thank you so much for the break.

One gripe if I have one it seemed like the special guest was Joe Walsh, he played James Gang to Eagles songs. It is a small gripe because the guy is just amazing. One thing I noticed just from being old when the girl came out in the Hotel California set to flip the album she actually did not flip the the album. yes I am old. but it was a great effect.

I would go see them again in 1/2 a heart beat.

What. A. Show! I grew up listening to the Eagles, either on album, CD, or my dad playing his guitar. It was a truly wonderful experience to be able to see them live with my dad and watch his enjoyment of seeing a band he’s loved for so long live. The staging and pace of the show was absolutely amazing and set the tone perfectly, and the graphics and lighting designers definitely did their best work. We were close to the stage and it was absolutely fascinating to watch all the cameras recording the event, as well. The band was exceptional but the team behind them is definitely to be commended for this one! I hope everyone who sees this tour has the same level of enjoyment my family and I did!

Experiencing the September, 2019 Eagles "Hotel California" concert at the MGM was a musical trip into near perfection.

The sound was very good even in our very expensive nosebleed seats.

The place was packed and the audience nonstop in its loud and persistent appreciation of all things Eagles, especially new members Deacon Frey and Vince Gill.

Longtime mega-talented members Henley, Walsh and Smith were true crowd pleasers, as they always are.

Having a full orchestra and an angelic choir from UNLV supporting the endeavor was at times ethereally mesmerizing to the point of enthrallment.

Once again the Eagles have lived up to their reputation as purveyors of musical excellence.

The Eagles were amazing. After the death of Glenn Frey I feared that my Eagles would be no more. But the addition of Deacon Frey & Vince Gill was a perfect fit. The fact that Deacon looks just like his dad from the early days & he has a great voice & handles the guitar like a pro. The Eagles did not disappoint any of their fans while playing 2 plus hours. Thank you for staying together & keeping the Music alive. Vince you did an amazing job filling some empty shoes, Don , Joe & Timothy & the rest of the band you are all true musicians. I grew up on your music & thankful you are continuing to tour!

Awesome night in the presence of pure music legends.

This was my 7th Eagles gig and 1st since the sad loss of Glen.

So it was a bit of a night of raw emotion but the tightness of the harmonies the exceptional vocal ability of all of the band including Vince gill stu Smith and doing his father proud Deavon Frey made it my most favourite Eagles gig.

And of course the madman who is Joe Walsh was again in cracking form with Don holding it all together along with Timothy.

Really was a night to remember 2 and a half hours of pure class you could reach out and touch the love in the room.

Magnificent opening with Seven Bridge Road that you know instantly that it will be a magnificent concert.

With an emotional contribution by Deacon Frey as a perfect replacement for his fatger, great voicr, great performsnce. Vince Gill is a good addition to the voices of the Eagles.

Joe Walsh is taking just enough space with some of his solo work, and shows that the Eagles bring more than just country rock.

A feast of almost all their hits, with Hotel California and Desperado as encores. Eagles as you expect to be.

We went home very pleased that we were part of this.

Outstanding show! They came on early so that they could do a 2 and a half hour long set. Plenty of the favourites from over the years. Glenn Frey's son was excellent as were the sets.

Not even the drunk old men behind me (that were under some illusion that not only could they sing but they could also mimic the sound of a guitar) were able to spoil the evening.

Sheryl Crow (the Support Act!) was also on top form.

Philadelphia Eagles to face Green Bay Packers in 2024 NFL Brazil game

By Tom Dougherty

Updated on: April 10, 2024 / 1:48 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers will open the 2024 regular season in São Paulo, Brazil , in the NFL's first-ever regular-season game in South America, the league announced Wednesday.

The Eagles and Packers will kick off on Friday, Sept. 6, at Corinthians Arena. It will be the first Friday night game of the NFL's opening weekend in over 50 years.

The game will be in prime time, but a kickoff time has yet to be determined. It will be streamed exclusively on Peacock.

Philadelphia will be the "home" team for the 2024 São Paulo game.

"With the global growth of our sport being a top priority to our league, we embrace the opportunity to grow our fanbase around the world and bring Eagles football to the 38 million sports fans in Brazil," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "One of the world's most culturally diverse nations, Brazil is an international melting pot, and we look forward to experiencing its warm, vibrant and welcoming environment later this year."

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement , "We're looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo. We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth."

Eagles vs. Packers history

The meeting will be the 48th between the Birds and Packers in NFL history - the Packers lead the series 29-18, according to Pro Football Reference .

Philadelphia and Green Bay last met in Week 12 of the 2022 season, when Jalen Hurts led the Birds to a 40-33 win  over the Packers on Sunday Night Football.

The two teams have faced each other three teams in the playoffs, with the Eagles owning a 2-1 record against Green Bay, including the "4th-and-26 game" in 2004 .

Have the Eagles or Packers ever played in an international game?

This will be the second international game for both the Eagles and Packers.

Philadelphia beat Jacksonville, 24-18, in 2018 at London's Wembley Stadium.

The Packers lost, 27-22, to the New York Giants in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London.

Other NFL teams playing international games in 2024

The Eagles and Packers join the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Jaguars and Carolina Panthers as NFL teams playing internationally in 2024.

The Bears, Vikings and Jaguars were named the designated teams for London, England, while the Panthers were designated for Munich, Germany. The NFL has yet to announce who their opponents are.

NFL international game history

The NFL first played outside the United States in 2005, when the Arizona Cardinals faced the San Francisco 49ers at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.

Since then, the NFL has played games in other countries like Mexico and Germany in addition to England.

Two games were played in Germany and three in London during the 2023 regular season.

2024 NFL Draft: First-round trades the Eagles could make, including a blockbuster move into the top 10

Potential deals for one of the nfl's most trade-happy franchises.

howie-roseman.jpg

The 2024 NFL Draft is just around the corner, and while the full order of picks is set, most of the league's 32 teams are likely to move around the board as the rookie class unfolds. Few clubs tend to be as active as the Philadelphia Eagles , who have a history of shifting up and down -- particularly in the first round -- under general manager Howie Roseman.

Which deals could Roseman and the Eagles be eyeing this year? Here are several potential trades Philadelphia could consider on April 25, including a blockbuster leap into the top 10:

Trade up to No. 10

The Eagles probably wouldn't be inclined to make such a splash unless a top player at a position of importance slipped to the No. 10 spot, but that's not an unfeasible scenario. Perhaps it's Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt, a potential successor for All-Pro Lane Johnson . Or Alabama cover man Terrion Arnold, a ready-made challenger for opposite Darius Slay . Or maybe even Crimson Tide edge rusher Dallas Turner, who could plug in opposite new signee Bryce Huff in the wake of Haason Reddick's departure. Roseman has a history with Jets general manager Joe Douglas, a former Philly executive, and New York doesn't currently own a second-rounder, so a move back could increase their 2024 haul.

Trade up to No. 15

If a consensus top-two prospect at tackle or cornerback falls outside the top 10, be it Arnold or linemen Taliese Fuaga and/or Troy Fautanu, the Eagles could prefer to leap up rather than sit tight for leftovers. Even Quinyon Mitchell, the Toledo cover man, could be a possibility here, provided Philly is set on upgrading the secondary. Edge rusher is always a prime target, too. Colts general manager Chris Ballard is no stranger to doing business with the Birds, meanwhile. In this scenario, the Eagles would be surrendering the rough equivalent of a late-second to leap-frog teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks .

Trade up to No. 19

This is a much smaller leap, but if the Eagles have their heart set on adding a tackle of the future -- they've proven time and time again they value the trenches above all else -- then this would enable a jump of the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers , both of whom could use help at bookend, if not cornerback. The Rams , meanwhile, would probably welcome additional ammo for the post-Matthew Stafford era, whenever that officially arrives.

Trade down to No. 28

If the Eagles move back, it's hard to envision them dropping out of Round 1 entirely, considering their hunt for immediate depth on a Super Bowl-hunting lineup. Here, they'd drop six spots but add a second third-rounder for 2025, essentially offsetting the 2025 fourth they once traded to land D'Andre Swift . The Bills , meanwhile, would likely try to help quarterback Josh Allen , who lost multiple veteran starters due to cost-cutting measures, by making a leap for a top remaining wideout, pass rusher or corner.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Schedule 2024: Dates, Times, TV Schedule, and More

At 10-1 last season, the Philadelphia Eagles were seen as a Super Bowl-caliber roster with stars all over the field.

Oh, how things have changed. In one of the biggest collapses in NFL history, Philadelphia dropped six of their final seven games to end the year, including a 32-9 blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

With talent still aplenty across the roster, and a coaching staff that has gone through major changes, the Eagles are expected to shrug off their failings last season and compete for another title.

To do that, we first need to look at who they will play in 2024 and their strength of schedule .

Philadelphia Eagles’ Schedule and Opponents

We don’t yet know Philadelphia’s exact schedule as that information has not been released, but we do know who their opponents will be for the 2024 season and who they will play in Week 1.

The Eagles will be kicking off their 2024 NFL season with a Friday matchup in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers. This matchup will be counted as a home game for the Eagles.

As for the Eagles’ other opponents, we’ll have to wait for the official NFL schedule release to find out exactly when they will face the following teams.

Home: New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars

Road: New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams

Eagles’ Strength of Schedule

Pro Football Network’s own Dallas Robinson has the Eagles with the ninth-easiest schedule in the NFL next season. That’s a sharp contrast from last season where they had one of the hardest in the game.

At one point during the season last year, Philadelphia had games against the Cowboys twice, the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Buffalo Bills in a row. Add in regular-season contests against the Bucs, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Giants twice (teams that either reached the playoffs the year prior or that season), and Philadelphia’s 2023 season was as grueling as any in league history.

Eagles Record Prediction: 12-5

As we speak, the Eagles have a win total of 10.5 at sportsbooks. That’s due in large part to their major offseason acquisitions of running back Saquon Barkley, edge defender Bryce Huff, and the return of C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Philadelphia should not solely be a 10-win team. They have all the talent and coaching in the world to be a top seed in the NFC and a Super Bowl-caliber franchise.

The only thing that appears to get in their way is if Nick Sirianni struggles as head coach and QB Jalen Hurts doesn’t mix well with Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator. Outside of that, though, the Eagles should feel safe knowing they are still a top team in the conference.

Biggest Matchups of the Year

While Philadelphia’s schedule may be a little lighter in 2024, they still have key matchups against the Packers, Ravens, Browns, Rams, Steelers, and Buccaneers. That’s six playoff teams from last year, without counting their usual two against the Cowboys.

That also doesn’t count a road game against the Bengals, a team that most likely would have made the playoffs last season if Joe Burrow didn’t get injured.

KEEP READING: All 32 Teams’ Regular-Season Home and Away Games for Next Year

There will be some sneaky good games next season — like when Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons come to Philadelphia — but the Eagles know that if they want to truly be a title-contending team next season, beating the top teams like the Cowboys, Packers, and Ravens will be the main focus.

A flock of common cranes in Poland’s Bielawa reserve.

‘A water world teeming with wildlife’: readers’ favourite national parks in Europe

From camping beside glacial lakes in Montenegro to birdwatching in Poland, the continent has no shortage of inspiring wilderness adventures

Suddenly the Polish sky was filled with cranes

One of the most incredible bird scenes in Europe took place as I hiked through the Bielawa nature reserve in northern Poland, about 40 miles north of Gdansk. I had left the village of Sławoszyno via a dirt track and was heading towards Kłanino, the open countryside and fields disappearing from my sight as the hedgerows grew taller either side of me. As I stepped forward, a gap appeared in the hedge and in front of my eyes a flock of nearly 100 cranes, which had been silent, took off across the field, honking with their red-tinged heads and faces, and feathery wing feathers flapping. I could almost touch them. The 19,000-hectare (47,000-acre) park is a mix of forest, wetland and coast. Rita

A true wilderness in Georgia

Two hikers watch a wild horse next to a hiking trail through Tusheti, Georgia

Tusheti national park in Georgia transports you to a lost era. A hair-raising journey over the twists, turns and sheer drops of the 2,830-metre Albano Pass delivers you into a wild, beautiful landscape with the Caucasus mountains as your backdrop. Stay in off-the-grid guesthouses with showers heated by wood-burners; homemade cheese for breakfast hosted by hardy people shaped by their rugged landscape. Walking trails wind along deserted valleys and up over the mountains. In the absence of roads, horses transport luggage and walkers just have the clean, crisp air and roaring rivers for company. This is a remote, beautiful world. Penny

Wolves and waterfalls in Croatia

A boardwalk in Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Imagine 16 interconnected lakes, surrounded by pristine forest teeming with wildlife and leading down to impressive waterfalls. I spent a day wandering this magical place. Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia (at more than 30,000 hectares) and a Unesco world heritage site . You can explore marked trails ranging from two to eight hours. The park is open during hours of daylight. At night the park returns to the lynx, wolves, bears, snakes, bats and owls that call it home. Susanna C

Hike to Corsica’s high-altitude lake

View of Lac De Nino in Corsica with mountains in background

The Parc naturel régional de Corse has stunning scenery. The best way to explore it is on the hike to Lac de Nino , among Corsica’s highest lakes at 1,743 metres. You start by ascending through forest of Corsican pines, where you might be lucky enough to see the endemic Corsican nuthatch, before you clear the treeline and are surrounded by granite mountain tops. After a scree scramble you reach the lake, where mouflon (a feral subspecies of domestic sheep) graze the marshy grasses. B&B L’Auberge des Deux Sorru (doubles from €75) is a great base to explore from. Rob Dalziel

An avian paradise on the coast of Greece

Flamingos in the wetlands of Mesolongi.

With a day spare in Mesolongi, western Greece, and realising we were in the coastal nature paradise of the Ethniko Parko limnothalasson Mesolongiou-Aitolikou , we booked a bird expert, Spyros Skareas, from Greece Bird Tours , to help us get the most out of a day tour. Spyros arrived at 8am in a battered car that turned out to be a mobile bird hide. Whenever we stopped, windows wide open, the birds did not move as long as we didn’t open the car doors. More than 70 birds, including two griffon vultures, endangered dalmatian pelicans (one of the world’s largest freshwater birds), flamingos, avocets and many more delighted. A stunning day. At 6.30pm we departed exhausted but ecstatic. Sarah Ackroyd

In Slovakia we were surrounded by ground squirrels

A view from a watchtower of Muránska planina national park in Slovakia.

We stumbled on the Muránska planina national park in central Slovakia by accident while stopping at a bakery for fluffy buns. We turned off the main road close to the village of Muráň, parked, then set off across a rolling grass meadow that is home to a colony of about 1,000 ground squirrels running in and out of their burrows in the hope of being fed. The park is huge, at more than 21,000 hectares with 200 miles of hiking trails and is mostly forested karst scenery. The squirrels were adorable (although we didn’t share our buns). Vik

A walk in the Black Forest, Germany

A street in Gengenbach, Germany.

The Schwarzwald has much more going for it than gateau. We spent a glorious two-week Easter break in sleepy medieval Gengenbach village, 25 miles south-east of Strasbourg. Our Airbnb overlooked lawns sprouting spring flowers and had a balcony from where we could enjoy the views and birdsong. We spent our days hiking in the forests spotting wild boar and woodpeckers. We rode our bikes through fields of flowers and returned to refuel in the evening at beautiful restaurants. A guest card available to all tourists who pay the visitor tax gave us free train travel throughout more than 2,000 square miles of forested hills. We used this for day trips to Strasbourg and the spa town of Baden-Baden. A perfect trip. Natalie

A dive into Iceland’s geology and history

Scuba divers in Lake Thingvellir.

The Thingvellir national park , 30 miles east of Reykjavík, was my favourite stop along the Golden Circle route . This Unesco world heritage site was the chosen place for one of the world’s oldest “democratic” parliaments – Althing. Local clans found a natural amphitheatre perfect for public speaking, including the high rock wall of Lögberg (Law Rock). The park is fascinating for anyone with even a passing interest in geology: here the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of two centimetres a year, creating a rift valley. There are crevasses visible in the Almannagjá canyon. The Silfra fissure is one of the top sites in the world for snorkellers and scuba divers. We saw the northern lights from here, which was awe-inspiring. We stayed in Flúðir (25 miles away). Mihaela

A rugged corner of Andalucía, Spain

A rocky hillside in Sierras Subbéticas natural park.

The Sierras Subbéticas natural park in Andalucía is a little off the beaten track. Between Córdoba and Granada it fits easily into a trip taking in the two cities. There are no permits or charges for this 32,000-hectare park. You can wander for hours without seeing another (human) soul, but can see vultures, eagles and other raptors, and if you’re lucky (as we were one early morning) wild boar. In spring the mountains are alive with wildflowers. Bronze age and Roman hill forts can be seen, and we’ve found a few fossils on the hillsides. Paths, often old drovers’ trails and olive farmers’ tracks, can be clear and level or more challenging so it’s crucial to take directions before you set off. Stay at Casa Olea (doubles from €136 B&B) on the edge of the park: the co-owners Tim and Claire are a fount of local knowledge: they will make you a packed lunch and you can hire mountain bikes. Return to a delicious dinner and watch the bats and owls from the terrace under the stars. Stephanie O’Brien

Winning tip: glacial lakes in Montenegro

A lake and some moored boats in Durmitor national park, Montenegro.

Durmitor national park can often be overlooked by tourists visiting the Bay of Kotor and the coast. We stayed at the Mlinski Potok campsite, which has views of the Dinaric Alps and is just a short walk from the town of Žabljak on the edge of the park. The drive up narrow winding roads took us to a craggy landscape and along the edges of deep gorges. Exploring the area revealed excellent walks and beautiful blue-green glacial lakes, tempting to swim in but so cold! Sara

2024 nfl draft: 6 eagles-related takeaways from daniel jeremiah's conference call, share this article.

On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah held a conference call with the media to field questions and provide insight on next week’s NFL draft.

Jeremiah weighed in on several topics in the wide-ranging call, with one week until the first round kicking off in Detroit.

Here are six highlights and takeaways from the questions and answers.

Daniel Jeremiah on Eagles potentially trading up

Howie Roseman is always aggressive on draft night, and Jeremiah was asked about the Eagles GM potentially moving up for a dynamic player.

I never sleep on Howie Roseman as a potential to go north or south. I always keep an eye on them. I think they have a pretty obvious need there at corner. You have somebody like Terrion Arnold or even Mitchell, if Quinyon Mitchell, if either of those guys start to drift a little bit, I wouldn’t sleep at all on the Eagles being an aggressive team and going up there and trying to get one of those corners.

Jeremiah on offensive tackle prospects for Eagles

Philadelphia builds through the trenches, and Jeremiah was asked about the Eagles succession plan for Lane Johnson at right tackle.

Oregon State offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga was named the best fit, but he could be off the board, so Jeremiah dropped several others.

If you’re asking me who the stout guys are in this draft,Fuaga would be way up there. I don’t think that he’s going to be in their mix. Ifwe’re looking at the reasonable guys that they could have a shot at, Latham,Mims, and Guyton. I think all three of those guys have exceptional physicaltraits. They’re all enormous and long. And by all accounts are coachable. To me, I would be–you could try and split hairs there, but I think all three ofthose guys, they’re 18, 22, and 23 on my list, and I think all three of thoseguys would be Jeff Stoutland approved in terms of the ability they have.I think Latham is a little bit further along in the progression than Mims andGuyton, but I think any of those three guys are there, I would think thatStoutland would absolutely get the best out of them.

Daniel Jeremiah on prospects who cross train

Philadelphia loves to draft prospects who offer versatility, and Jeremiah was asked about potential offensive tackles who could transition to the guard spot.

Of those three that I said, I would say Latham. Between Latham, Mims, and Guyton, that’s a lot of man inside. All those guys are big, but you’re talking about almost 6’8″ with Mims and Guyton, whereas it’s almost 6’6″ with Latham. To me, Latham would be the one that could kick in, but the two that could really do it are Fuaga and Fautanu. Those two guys, plug andplay at guard and graduate to tackle whenever Lane walked away. You’d have to move up a little bit to get that done. Howie’s been more than willing to do that over the years, too. He’ll move either way. I wouldn’t rule that out if one of those guys started to drift. That’s an easy plug-and-play guard for sure.

Jeremiah was asked about the Eagles’ plans for their two second-round picks and multiple fifth-round picks.

When you start talking about day three guys, corners, guys like Josh Newton from TCU and Jarvis Brownlee from Louisville, Those are a couple off the top that I like. I love Andru Phillips from Kentucky. I think he’s going to end up going on day two. He’s a good player. Those are some of the names in the corner position. Then linebackers, day three linebackers that can help you immediately onspecial teams and then continue to grow and develop, I like Ulofoshio from Washington, Bertrand from Notre Dame, Muasau from UCLA. Those are some guys that, to me, are day three players that not only can help you on teams right away, but they’re guys who I think have the potential to be solid starters in time.

Philadelphia is stacked on offense, and after likely building through the trenches, Howie Roseman could choose to use two second-round picks, dynamic defenders, or more firepower for Kellen Moore’s offense. Jeremiah all but guaranteed that Roseman would select a running back.

The guy I like, I just did the other day; I was going through the non-combine guy, Blake Watson, from Memphis. When I worked there, Howie was always big on explosives; he wanted to see how many explosive runs guys had and catches. He wanted guys that could go the distance as runningbacks and have some juice. This guy ran 4.4 flat, and has a ton of production both rushing and catching the ball.

Daniel Jeremiah on potential late round wide receivers

Jeremiah added to his answer about the Eagles adding more offensive depth.

When you’re looking at receivers, I go back to, like, Quez Watkins as being a good hit for them late. Looking for late receivers with traits, big time speed that could go, you could get to Anthony Gould, who can return from Oregon State. Ran 4.39. He’s undersize, but it’s a fun flyer to take late in the draft on somebody who has return value and also has the ability to get on top of coverage.
