Bring Binoculars and Cameras: Binoculars can help you spot animals at a distance, while a good camera can capture those magical moments. Make sure to bring adequate zoom lenses and a pair of binoculars.

Respect Wildlife and Rules: Always maintain a safe distance from animals, and never attempt to feed or disturb them. Follow the park's rules and guidelines to ensure both your safety and the animals'.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Appropriate Clothing: Bandhavgarh's climate can be hot, so staying hydrated is essential. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and don't forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

What We Do?

Bandhavgarh National Park has a rich history, associated with the flourishing medieval city of Bandhavgarh. The term BANDHAV means brother or friend. GARH word means fort. So, the overall meaning is Fort of a brother / friend. The name of the National Park is derived from this term. The fort is considered to be one of the marvels of ancient ‘Treta Yug’ period. The Baghels were the main rulers of the region in the medieval era for the longest period.

When the Baghels shifted capital city of their kingdom to Rewa, the Bandhavgarh region was somewhat cut-off. The region was later developed into a thick forest habitat for wild animals, mainly tigers. It was soon declared as a game reserve for the Royals.

As years passed by, rules shifted through various focal points, and ultimately in 1968, the State Government got the rights of the land and the forest. In the year 1982, it was declared a National Park. After 11 years, in 1993, the Park became a Tiger Reserve under the scheme of Project Tiger.

How to book your safari for Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve?

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Tala Gate Entrance

Introduction

The Bandhavgarh Reserve is quite famous among nature & wildlife enthusiasts because of the majestic jungles and Tiger sightings. Bandhavgarh is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh, 165 kms away from Jabalpur & 425 kms away from Nagpur. One can take a flight to Jabalpur or Nagpur and then reach Bandhvagarh through Road. The closest railway station is Umaria which is 25 kms away from the Tiger place.

While planning a vacation to Bandhavgarh, there were lot of questions like how to book the safari? What are their timings? Is taking online permit sufficient or one need any other permits also? How is guide allocated or how is gypsy allocated? How the sharing gypsy works? And lot of other similar questions. Google was my only rescue but unfortunately lot of information was either incomplete or not available. And after the vacation, we thought that this information should be shared so that someone else can easily plan their visit to Bandhavgarh.

Zones of Bandhavgarh

The jungle is divided into six zones:

• Tala ( Gate 1 )

• Magdhi ( Gate 2 )

• Khitauli ( Gate 3 )

• Panpatha Zone

• Dhamokhar Zone

• Johila Zone

The first three zones are the core zones and the last three zones are the buffer zones. Mostly people choose the core zones for safari as they have high density of tigers and the sightings in these zones are regular. But recently we were told that soon the buffer zones are also going to be turned into core zones because the sighting of tigers has increased in the buffer zones.

Out of the total area of the jungle, only 20% is open for Safari visits & rest of the area is untouchable for the tourists. Tala is one the famous core zones & most of the resorts are located in this area.

Bandhavgarh National Park: A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Toshita Sahni

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Nestled among the Satpura hills in central India is Bandhavgarh, a national park rich in history as well as wildlife. This famous tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh gets its name from a legend. “Bandhav” means brother and “garh” means fort—it is believed that Lord Ram gifted a fort in this region to his younger brother, Laxman. The park has many sites of archaeological significance, but its glorious tigers remain the landmark attraction.

Prakash Dwivedi was born and raised in a village on the borders of Bandhavgarh. He has spent fourteen years as a safari guide, introducing people to the many charms of the forest he considers his home. Here’s what you should know before planning a trip to Bandhavgarh National Park:

What makes Bandhavgarh National Park special?

The increased tiger density of Bandhavgarh draws many enthusiasts from within and outside the country. The reserve is spread over more than 1500sqkm and boasts a population of over 120 tigers. Its terrain is characterised by hills, valleys, marshes, meadows and rivers—all of which shelter wildlife ranging from ferocious carnivores to delicate butterflies. Besides biodiversity, the park is also home to many legends and places of historical interest. Within the reserve, one can find Badi Gufa, a 10th-century cave carved out of solid sandstone, said to have housed armies in ancient times. Visitors frequent Three Cave Point, as the structure is known to provide animals shelter from the elements. It is also believed that Sant Kabir and Tansen have stayed in Bandhavgarh.

What to spot at Bandhavgarh National Park?

There are approximately 37 species of mammals and 250 species of birds in the park. The most commonly spotted mammals are tigers, leopards, sloth bears, jackals, and wild dogs. Among the three deer species found in the park, sightings of the sambar deer and the spotted deer are more frequent than those of the elusive barking deer. You will also find 300+ species of birds in the reserve, such as the pond heron, white-necked stork, coppersmith barbet, sarus crane, asian green bee-eater, scarlet minivet, and many more.

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Dwivedi has many spotting rituals, but the most important one is to pay attention to sounds in the forest.

“More often than not, the behaviour of other animals will alert you that a predator is in the vicinity. For instance, a naturalist will tell you that deer and langurs tend to make a distinctive noise when they feel threatened. So, if you hear that particular call, you can predict that a tiger must be close at hand.”

What's the best time to visit Bandhavgarh National Park?

Safaris in the core zones happen only from 1st October to the end of June. They remain closed during the peak monsoon season, although the buffer zones are open year-round. If you are mainly interested in spotting animals and birds, summer offers you the best chances. With the heat, the forest’s vegetation starts drying up. Natural bodies of water inside the reserve are very few. Moreover, artificial ones, which are periodically replenished, lie very close to the safari routes. Therefore, animals are obliged to come to these specific locations to drink water—thus increasing the probability of sightings . As foliage becomes thinner, birds can also be spotted more easily.

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy the lush greenery of this majestic park, Dwivedi suggests visiting between October and February. He explains, “In winter, the forest is completely green and provides a scenic backdrop to your sightings. The animals are harder to spot but more at ease. You get to see them leisurely roaming around their habitat—it’s truly wonderful. In the summers, you only see thirsty, frustrated animals pacing in a dry jungle.”

How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?

The guide recommends doing at least one safari in each of the three core zones so that you feel that “you have truly experienced Bandhavgarh”. Since no fences or barriers separate each of the zones, animals are free to move between them. Hence, visiting all of them gives you more opportunities to spot different species.

What are the safari slots to book at Bandhavgarh?

There are two slots in the day for safaris. At present, the morning safari is from around 6:45am to 11:30am, whereas the afternoon one is from 3pm to 6pm. These timings keep changing slightly, depending on the seasons and times of sunrise and sunset. According to Dwivedi, the morning slot is the best, because you get to spend four to five hours in the jungle. Not only is the forest a lovely place to be at that time, but the longer duration improves your chances of spotting the animals. Night safaris happen in the buffer zones from 7pm to 10pm. However, visibility is restricted to what the headlights of your vehicle can illuminate. Although it is thrilling to be in the jungle in the dark, don’t expect to get many sightings.

How to book a safari permit at Bandhavgarh and how much does it cost?

It is best to book the permits online via the Madhya Pradesh forest office’s  website . Dwivedi advises against doing it offline. A permit costs Rs2,450 for weekdays and Rs3,050 for weekends and festival dates. Safari bookings open four months in advance, and only a specific number of jeeps are allowed inside the forest per shift. Hence, it is important to plan ahead. Note that six people (excluding the driver and the guide) are allowed in one jeep. Children aged five years and above are counted among the six.

How to book a jeep and guide at Bandhavgarh?

Once you book a permit, you have to present a hard copy of the same to the forest department office at the Park. They will then allot you a jeep and a guide. The jeep charge is Rs3,000. Guides assigned by the department charge Rs480 or Rs600, depending on their category, G1 or G2. Dwivedi clarifies that there is no significant difference between the two options. Guests can pay extra and choose an independent guide to accompany them. For greater convenience, most hotels offer to handle all the bookings on behalf of the client and charge a service fee.

Which zones are the best in Bandhavgarh?

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Unlike other national parks in the country, the formal zoning of the park is relatively recent. Before 2012, Bandhavgarh did not have different zones and well-established regulations. Today, it has three core and four buffer zones. Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli are the core zones exclusively used for safari activities. There are also four buffer zones: Dhamokar, Johila, Panpatha and Paljha. People from nearby villages tend to frequent these zones to collect timber and forest produce. Animal sightings are fewer in these buffer zones because the animals are driven away by human activity and movement. Nevertheless, safaris also take place in these buffer zones (except Paljha).

Dwivedi highly recommends the Tala Zone, which is also the oldest in the park. The Charan Ganga river flows into the Tala Zone from the famous Shesh Shaiya point. Jeep Safari:

Jeep Safari is one of the best methods to take in Bandhavgarh National Park’s enthralling wildness. The park is open to wildlife enthusiasts twice a day, in the morning and the evening. 4WD Gypsies are typically preferred for jungle safaris. A trained Guide rides in the jeep with a maximum of 6 passengers to make the trip more informative. The time of sunrise determines the morning safari schedule.

Single Jeep Safari:

You will go with other visitors and a guide in a single Jeep Safari.

Full-day Jeep safari:

In a full-day Jeep safari, you can reserve the entire vehicle for yourself, together with a driver and a guide, and your jeep will arrive at the safari area 15-20 minutes sooner than other cars. You’ll leave for home 15 minutes after the last of the safari cars.

Canter Safari:

Tourists often prefer to go on a wildlife safari in canter automobiles. It can hold up to 12 visitors. The tourist can use it on a first-come, first-served basis. The Magadhi Zone and Khitauli Zone permit camel safaris. Due to its affordability, tourists consistently choose it as the second-best alternative.

Canter Safari | Bandhavgarh Safari Booking

Elephant Safari:

Elephant Safaris are among the most well-liked ways to view wildlife. When you do your Bandhavgarh Safari Booking, make sure you reserve an elephant safari in advance online because it is not always accessible. They are mostly preserved for study, rescue, photography, and not tourism purposes alone. It is difficult for a regular tourist to hire elephants for a safari. For the issuing of a full-day jeep safari, you must obtain approval from the Field Director of Bandhavgarh National Park 7 to 10 days in advance, along with a Demand Draft for the security deposit.

Walk Safaris:

At the buffer zone in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, you can go on a guided Walk Safari with a tour guide. A naturalist and a forest officer will be with you. The greatest people for it are individuals who enjoy getting close to nature.

Bandhavgarh Safari Booking Procedure

The park remains closed every March during Holi and every Wednesday evening (just in the core area) for safari.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Allowance to a limited number of cars is given to enter the forest in various zones each day. This is done to prevent crowding the forest and upsetting the local flora and animals.

Safari Timings and Prices

Seasonal variations will affect Bandhavgarh National Park hours. Wintertime daylight hours cause the morning entry time to be longer and the evening exit time to be shorter. October to June is the ideal time to go on a wildlife safari in Bandhavgarh National Park. From 15 October to 30 June, the park is open to visitors interested in wildlife.

The park remains closed to visitors in the evening on Wednesdays. India celebrates Holi with a lot of fanfare and spectacle. Both shifts of the remains are closed on this day.

Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park

Both, Jeep and  Elephant Safaris   are available at Bandhavgarh . Even though the denizens of the park are now accustomed to both, it is crucial that proximity to them is guided by an expert watcher who is familiar with the ways of the wild.

Almost all tigers in Bandhavgarh today are descendants of Charger and Sita . Their immediate next generation of Joita, Langru, and B2 kept well with the tradition of moving close to tourists and being photographed. Charger died in the year 2000.

Papers and Permits – What You Need To Know Before Your Bandhavgarh Jungle Safari

The Ultimate Guide to Bandhavgarh Jungle Safari: Everything You Need to Know

One of India’s most precious treasures is her biodiversity. To protect this incredible treasure, there are some factors to consider before you can experience the splendour of an incredible Bandhavgarh tiger safari .

To start, one must bear in mind that jeeps and tourists are not protected species of the park, therefore their entry is subject to various rules and regulations. Jeeps operate in two batches – for about four hours after sunrise, and from 2 PM to sunset. Jeeps are limited, and visitors are encouraged to book these in advance to ensure availability. Furthermore, the total number of vehicles allowed inside the park simultaneously is also limited, so being an early riser is highly recommended.

For larger groups, there is a canter safari available. This is not the most luxurious or comfortable way to enjoy your Bandhavgarh National Park safari , but there are certain advantages to this. For one, large groups can travel together, making it perfect for college tours, multiple families travelling, photography workshops and many other group activities. The other is for media production, as the extra floor space means that a tripod or two can be on the canter itself. This combined with the high suspension of the canter means that you can get even closer shots of birds, monkeys, leopards, and snakes – essentially anything in the branches or canopy is much more accessible.

Another thing visitors should keep in mind is the elephant safari . Visitors have a chance of experiencing the beauty of the park on the back of nature’s most majestic and wisest creatures. These charming pachyderms will take you through routes inaccessible by jeep, deep within the Tala core area. Imagine sitting atop one of these gentle giants, with the numerous rare birds now at eye level, as it silently takes you deep within the verdant depths of the jungle.

This incredible experience is only available to the most intrepid and dedicated lovers of nature, the ones who spend every waking moment yearning for their next excursion into the wild, carefully planning each element of their journey – people like you, who read our wonderful blog! Here’s what you need to know about the elephant safari at Bandhavgarh National Park –

  • It is exclusive to the Tala zone, and not available elsewhere.
  • It is subject to the health and availability of the elephants.
  • It is under the direct discretion of the Field Director, and a written application will have to be submitted to the Field Director’s office at least 24 hours before the intended safari day.
  • The form and format are unavailable online, and can only be written and submitted at the Park itself. Carrying your pen and paper is recommended.

The park does not have large flowing rivers, and the narrow streams are home to an abundance of fish, reptiles and amphibians. These factors rule out any possibility of a canoe safari , something that you can experience at another National Park in Madhya Pradesh – Panna National Park.

With this knowledge firmly within your grasp, you are now ready to take the next step of your journey – booking your Bandhavgarh National Park safari !

When is the Best Time to Visit Bandhavgarh National Park?

The best time for a Bandhavgarh National Park safari depends on your specific desires. For those with an interest in a specific species, such as particular migratory birds, it is best to consult with a wildlife expert. No one can guarantee a sighting of any particular animal.

The peak season for visitors is between October and March. During this time of the year, the temperatures are below 30 degrees Celsius, which makes the afternoon safari window a very comfortable experience. This is the best time for most travellers, especially those with young children. The weather is comfortable, and there is little chance of rain. Carrying a light jacket is advisable, especially during December and January.

One thing that visitors must keep in mind is that during the winter months, particularly from November to February, the park opens slightly later and closes earlier. This is because daylight hours are limited during the winter months.

From the middle of March to the middle of June, the park has fewer visitors. During this time, the temperature is very high, and crossing 40 degrees Celsius is relatively common in May. This is the best time for getting some incredible wildlife photos. The lower number of tourists means that there is a lower chance of some other group scaring away the animals. Carrying some ORS is highly recommended.

From the middle of June to the middle of October, the core area is closed to visitors. However, the buffer zone is fully accessible. While the chance of seeing a tiger may be lower, this is also the quietest time of the year. The chances of rain are very high, so a rain jacket is essential if you plan on visiting during this time. This time may not be the season for a Bandhavgarh jungle safari , but you can still visit the incredible Bandhavgarh Fort, and explore the multiple ancient caves in the area. This is the best time to visit if your main interests are history and culture, as you can interact with the local community at Tala.

What To Expect at Bandhavgarh National Park?

Royal Bengal Tiger in Bandhavgarh

The most common catchphrase you will hear during your Bandhavgarh tiger safari is “At other parks, you are lucky if you see a tiger. At Bandhavgarh, you are unlucky if you do not see at least one.” This is backed by mathematics, as there are around 20 tigers in the 105 sq. km open to visitors, roughly 1 tiger in every 5 sq. km. This is the highest density of Bengal tiger populations worldwide and a testament to the sheer abundance of wildlife that resides within the park.

Bandhavgarh holds a very special place in India’s mission to protect the Bengal Tiger – known as Project Tiger . It has proven itself multiple times as a viable location for wild births. The tiger population is healthy, with rich dark coats.

The park is also a hotspot for birds, and is home to over 250 different species of them. Migratory birds from colder climates visit the park during the winter months. Bird watching is one of the big draws of the park, with world famous photographers visiting this park for this exact reason.

Over 500 unique species of plants are found in the park, ranging from bushes to trees. During spring (mid-January to mid-February), the spectacular variety of wildflowers transforms the already magical aura of the park into something truly mythical.

The Park also contains many ancient ruins, sculptures and caves – these are from India’s ancient past and their origins are still being explored. One can take the opportunity to feel like Indiana Jones when exploring these ancient ruins in the midst of a deep jungle!

In conclusion, Bandhavgarh National Park offers some incredible experiences for all kinds of travellers. The Park’s proximity to the Khajuraho Group of Monuments makes it a great option for those who want to experience the best of India’s cultural heritage and natural wonders. A Bandhavgarh jungle safari will surely satiate your thirst for adventure!

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is a fabled location. The old Bandhavgarh Fort is significant because it is said to have been given to Lord Rama's younger brother Lakshmana by Lord Rama to keep an eye on Lanka. As a result, the fort is known as Bandhavgarh, with "Bandhav" meaning "brother" and "Garh" meaning "fort."

Bandhavgarh is a 2000-year-old site with multiple man-made caverns with writings and rock art. Bandhavgarh National Park, once a hunting zone for maharajas, is now home to the regal Bengal tiger, 37 other mammal species, 250 bird species, and 80 butterfly species.

For sightings of large cats, you should visit the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The highest population of Royal Bengal tigers in the world may be found in India's top tiger habitat. It is in Bandhavgarh National Park that all of the world's white tigers live.

Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh was the first in India to offer tourists a 'Hot Air Balloon Safari.'
