Bill Engvall explains the beginnings of "Here's Your Sign"
The latest news and views about music in Milwaukee and beyond
By Erik Ernst , Special to the Journal Sentinel
By the time Bill Engvall became part of the huge Blue Collar Comedy Tour, he was already a successful comedian. His "Here's Your Sign" routine might have even been only second in comedy catch phrase popularity to fellow Blue Collar comedian Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be a Redneck" bits in the 1990s.
In his act, Engvall began cleverly pointing out the regular stupidity he observed in the world around him. The idea grew beyond his stage act and led his 1996 "Here's Your Sign" album to become a platinum seller. The bit even became a ccharting country music song and video with Travis Tritt.
While Engvall's act has evolved in the past decades, he still finds room for his newest "Sign"-worthy observations. When I talked to him last week before his Saturday night Marcus Center show ( read the full feature here at Tap Milwaukee ), Engvall explained how "Here's Your Sign" began and how he watched it grow beyond his expectations. Read his comments below, then watch a video clip of some of Engvall's "Here's Your Sign" material.
"The bit used to be that I though stupid people should be slapped," Engvall said. "One day, my wife said, ‘You don’t look like the kind of guy who walks around slapping people.’ So, I can remember specifically that I was in Omaha, Neb. back when I would be in a club for about six days, I started working on this idea for a sign that just said, “I’m stupid” and people would wear it. I used to sell this little signs for a dollar a piece after the shows.
"I never thought that would be the thing that would get so big. Somebody said to me the other day, 'In the 1990s, 'Here’s Your Sign' became what 'Where’s the Beef' was in the 1980s.'
"I knew it had gotten big when I was in a grocery store one time. I wasn’t even up to the register yet and something was going on with the register and the cashier called the manager over. He said, ‘It’s just this button over here.’ He hit it and he said, ‘Here’s your sign.” I said, 'Oh my God, this has gotten bigger than I ever thought it would.'

Bill Engvall is signing off. The comedian is set to announce Wednesday morning that he is saying goodbye to stand-up, launching the farewell tour “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time” later this summer and into next year.
The comedian/actor/author, who’s also a Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum selling recording artist, is best known for his “Here’s Your Sign” routine. Engvall decided to hang the microphone up after more than 40 years in the business, and plans to reveal the news to his fans at noon ET via a live chat on his Facebook page .
“I have been blessed with the greatest career anyone could ask for,” Engvall said. “Making people laugh is a dream job and has fulfilled my life in so many ways. I’m excited to focus on future opportunities in entertainment and spend more time with my family. I’m not going anywhere – just hanging up my hat when it comes to sleeping in the airport and in-room dining.”
Next up, Engvall is set to host and serve as head auctioneer on “Blue Collar Auction,” a weekly Circle TV series premiering this fall.

The “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time” tour will kick off Aug. 26 at the Quechuan Casino Resort in Winterhaven, Calif., and continue with dates through the fall in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Florida and elsewhere, with more stops to come.
Engvall was part of the Blue Collar Comedy group, which included Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. The success of that tour led to concert films, recordings and other ancillary things. Engvall also starred in The WB sketch comedy show “Blue Collar TV” and several solo comedy specials for Comedy Central.
More recently, he appeared with Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy in 2012’s “Them Idiots Whirled Tour”, and his most recent special “Just Sell Him For Parts” was seen on the streaming site Vudu. Engvall’s other credits include the three-season TBS sitcom “The Bill Engvall Show”; he also played Rev. Paul on Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing,” hosted several game shows and was a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with The Stars.”
Engvall, regularly seen on late night talk shows including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” released his first album “Here’s Your Sign” in 1996; it was certified platinum and hit No. 1 on the Billboard comedy chart for 15 straight weeks. His second album, “Dorkfish,” was released in 1998 and debuted at #1 on Billboard’s comedy chart.
His books include the autobiography “Bill Engvall – Just A Guy” and his films include his own project, “Bait Shop” with Bilyl Ray Cyrus, and the drama “No Running” which recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Blue Collar Comedy founder and Parallel Entertainment principal JP Williams, who has managed Engvall for more than 25 years, called the comedian “truly one of the best men I have ever had the privilege of working with. His honesty and integrity in both his personal and professional life is second to none, and I have been fortunate to be a part of his incredible journey. There’s simply no one like him.”

Comedian bill engvall’s ‘here’s your sign, it’s finally time tour’ has two shows april 3 in northeast ohio, veteran funnyman talks about why it’s time to hang up the mic.
That’s why, at this point in his life, the funnyman — known for his “Here’s your sign” bits about stupid folks who struggle with common sense or his involvement with “Blue Collar Comedy Tours” with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White — has announced he’ll be hanging up the microphone for good after finishing his “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time Tour.”
Comic-actor Engvall (“The Bill Engvall Show,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “Last Man Standing,” “Blue Collar Auction”) is scheduled to return to the Lorain Palace Theatre for two shows April 3 .
The News-Herald talked to Engvall about making people laugh, Foxworthy and the one tour that will bring him out of retirement.
Q Hey Bill, you’ve been coming to Northeast Ohio for decades. What are your memories of the area?
A I’ve always had good reactions from the crowds in the whole state of Ohio. I remember back in the club days, we’d play Cincinnati and Columbus. I do know this: I fell in love with Ohio when I realized they put chili on spaghetti.
Q Well, that’s the wrong side of Ohio.
A I know it’s the wrong city, but it was like, “OK, that’s good drunk food.” One funny memory of Cleveland: We used to go to the Flats and watch those massive tankers navigate that little tiny canal. I used to think, “Man, somebody is taking out an eight-story building.” I was amazed by that. Then we’d get food from some cart just standing by the side of the road. God knows what we were eating, but at that point in my life, we didn’t care.
Q So what’s up with this retirement business? Are you taking the 30-year Cher retirement route?
A It was during COVID that I made the decision. It was when I couldn’t work and I didn’t have that same urge to get back out on the road. I knew it was time. You know what, bud? I’ve been doing this for 42 years, and I’ve had a blast. I’ve achieved everything I wanted to do. I always said I never wanted to be that act we’ve all seen where you go, “He should have stopped a year ago.” I wanted to go out on my terms. I’ve got so much going on. I’ll still do TV and movies, but it’s just the road is getting long. I want to start enjoying my life as a dad and a granddad.
Q Won’t you miss the adrenaline rush that comes from being up on stage and telling a joke that kills the audience?
A Oh, listen, I’m sure there will be times when I’ll miss it a lot because there’s really nothing better. I’ll miss that juice, but the problem is the traveling has gotten to be a little bigger than that moment. It’s funny because a friend of mine asked me why I was retiring now when I have everything rolling. I told him — with all due humbleness — that I caught the brass ring. I did everything I wanted to do. I had my own TV show, been in movies, wrote books, got gold and platinum albums. What else is left? Because I guarantee you nobody wants to see “Bill Engvall on Ice.” It’s a good place to hop off the ride.
Q It is true that early on in that ride people often confused you and your “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” buddy Jeff Foxworthy?
A Oh, Lord, Jeff and I, I think Wikipedia had us listed as cousins. And listen, that’s a great guy to be compared to. I remember a funny story when “Here’s your sign” first started getting big everybody thought Foxworthy did it. I said, “Jeff, are you getting people coming up to you saying they love that ‘Here’s your sign’ bit?” And he goes, “Oh, yeah.” I said, “What do you tell them?” He goes, “I tell them ‘thank you.’”
Q That said, what’s your best “You know you’re a redneck if…” joke?
A (Laughs) You couldn’t print it.
Q Finally, we’re guessing you’d consider coming out of retirement if a “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” ever had a reunion?
A I would definitely consider it. I don’t know that’ll ever happen just because it was lightning in a bottle. Our audience also has gotten older, but if the guys said they wanted to get back together, I’d give it a look. Hanging out with three of your buddies selling out arenas, while they’re throwing stupid money at you — I don’t know much better than that. I would have to be a quorum for all of us to agree on it, so we’ll see. I never say never, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

Bill Engvall – Here’s Your Sign
Bill Engvall Here’s Your Sign The Comedy Network May 23rd 2009 10 P.M. 90 minutes
Here’s Your Sign is Engvall’s tightest performance to date. This is clean stand-up comedy language wise but there are adult references and bathroom jokes. It is heavy on marital and family humor.
Bill Engvall opens Here’s Your Sign with a long routine on his 21 years of marriage. Relationship comedy is always fun, especially when a stand-up comic brings a few new twists and takes to the topic; Engvall does. Granted, there are a few ol’ standards like who know owns the testes and always being careful when answering a question she asks, but as it is all good natured, it works.
The comic’s son is also the source of a couple of nice long bits about boys, fathers, and becoming a man. “The talk” routine is pretty good, as is the story of his son’s first sports physical.
The next bit is the trip to Bahamas and what happens when you mix Vicodin and a Bahama Mamma. This stand-up routine is a bit different from the CD version. There is also a bit on Steve Irwin (and yes it is dated but that is Irwin’s own fault) and a pet psychic.
Next on Bill Engvall Here’s Your Sign is “That Doesn’t Happen In Our House” a great comparison between chick flick love scenes and what happens in a real couple’s bedroom. Of course, the show ends with some Here’s your sign jokes.
